Let’s face it. Five justices on the Supreme Court, all Catholic, are racist, sexist, religious orthodox thugs…in keeping with the shameful direction and path the Republican Party has slithered down over the past thirty years.

But remember, Sandra Day O’Connor selected George W. Bush to be president in 2000, so that a Republican would be the one choosing her successor when she retired. Literally, her vote was the one and only vote that counted in 2000.

I wonder if she gives any thought at all to the obscenity she visited upon our democratic society when she sided with the four radical right-wing justices on the Supreme Court in 2000, and butted into the Florida electoral controversy, and essentially threw the election to Bush and Cheney? I doubt it.

Nonetheless, her name will live in infamy in American history, for her betrayal of our nation, and the harm her action has caused and will continue to cause to all of our nation’s children over the next several decades.

cathy @ 60

How come I knew that confirming Roberts and Alito would lead to this? How come I knew that removing Sadaam would lead to the mess we now have in Iraq? How come I knew that electing George Bush as president would have a dismal outcome?
Because even though I’m not real smart, I have common sense and that seems to be a rare commodity around the country and in congress.

What you may be missing is that the people who did these things KNEW the effects they would have and they did them in spite of that knowledge. Amazed?

They have an agenda and small things like overturning stare decisis or ‘checks & balances’, Congressional oversight and the like do not bother them. They are incredibly radical.

What is their agenda?

Start by asking George Bush, as did Helen Thomas, what the real reason for going to war with Iraq was, since none of the reasons given before was supportable by the facts or has been proven to have been a lie. Bush demurred and ignored Thomas after that.

They won’t say what their agenda is!

I firmly believe one of the key items of their agenda is to distract and disable any progress Democrats might want to make. They put us into debt, so we have little money to work with. They throw stare decisis out the window, so we can’t proceed without going back to old issues first. They aren’t obstructing with a filibuster, though they might choose that too, but it’s obstruction nonetheless.

I think they truly fear the trend begun with Pres. Carter of Democrats wading into economic issues and not just staying with the Civil Rights issues. They really jumped all over Hilary’s health care plan and claimed credit for Bill’s plan to balance the budget and (aside from the Clinton years) have dominated the economy issue since 1981. It seemed likely we’d have Gore or Kerry, but they obviously stole those elections. Now it seems likely we’ll have a Dem president and there’s no Bush around, Repubs have a horrible public approval, electronic voting machines are on their way out, vote caging is being scrutinized and it’s hard for Karl Rove to breathe without Congress ‘providing oversight’.

How will Republicans (backed by many of America’s Rich) wiggle out of getting their due?

We’ve got to be vigilant because they have been extremely creative in the past and you can bet your bottom dollar they will do anything to keep Dems out of the presidency again.

Once in power it’s a huge mountain to climb. There is sooooo much that needs to be done to fix problems, much less make real progress.

It’s going to take a very big team effort by Democrats to make our next presidential administration a success.

Here’s a funny one from Barack Obama. In commenting on the SCOTUS ruling on Brown v. BofE remarked, Obama said I would not be here now if it was not for Brown V. Board of Education.

The funny thing about this is that Obama was educated at the Punahou Academy, the most elite private high school in Hawaii. …

Don’t get me wrong, I like Obama, but he has a tendency to come out with off-the-wall comments. I truly wish him well.

I think he’s still right in that if there had not been a Board v. Brown there wouldn’t have been as much integration and acceptance of our diversity and without that there wouldn’t be any dark-skinned candidate for president (same for Richardson).

Well, suppose US citizens banded together into a corporate entity called, say, The People, and seeks to contract with the federal government or some other entity to obtain services from various agencies. Is it appropriate that the feds be able to conspire with the agencies to set the minimum selling price (that is, taxes)? May we not find another vendor, say the Iraqi government, which could resell the services of the Defense Dept. to The People at a substantial discount.

I believe the term that Lithwick is reaching for is honesty. If Alito and Roberts were honest, instead of prattling on at their hearings about “respect for precedent and settled law”, they would have grabbed their crotches and snarled “Stare decisis this, lard ass…” the way they just did this week in everything from racism to price fixing.
These guys have a point of view and an agenda and they are only smart enough to know that it is repugnant to most sentient beings and therefore must be hidden until they attain positions secure from accountability…res ipsa Cheney….

Michael in Park Slope @ 4

Very interesting, but scary post. Of course, I knew in 2000 and again in 2004 that I was in for some big-time scarin’ (thank you, Ralph Nader!).

I am curious, if you know: is the fact that Roberts and Alito promised under oath to honor past precedents actually binding? Thanks.

-MS

LOL. Is lying to congress a crime??? Republican’s are screaming that Libby wasn’t lying to the grand jury because there was no “underlying” crime. To Republican jurists the Constitution is not relevant to today. It’s to be considered only in it’s historical context. Democratic Senators still willing to spout the gibberish that the president is entitled to appoint who he wants and vote to confirm on that basis are to be held accoutable as well as the nominee who makes statements which he later ignores.
