This is the savior of the Republican Presidential sweepstakes for 2008? (via Bloomberg)
His career has also been characterized by bouts of what even some allies describe as a detachment that sometimes verges on laziness, and by providential help from influential backers….
Some also wondered whether he had the drive required for political combat. A Republican aide who has played central roles in both Tennessee politics and Washington spoke with Thompson a few years ago about a possible run for governor. The aide said he told Thompson the next governor would have to take on two arduous tasks: fixing the state’s health-care system and balancing the budget. Shortly after the conversation, Thompson announced he wouldn’t run….
In the end, Thompson may find the prospect of a turn in the world’s brightest spotlight too tempting to pass up. High-school friends and teachers in Lawrenceburg recall that Thompson showed an early hunger for public affirmation, particularly on the football field.
“He wasn’t a real good football player because he liked to have fun and didn’t take it that serious,” said Garner Ezell, 74, a former assistant coach for the team. “He was popular and he liked attention, and would do things to get it.”
In one incident recalled by Ezell and others, Thompson appeared to be injured during a game. The coach ran out to see if he was all right and a smiling Thompson greeted him by asking, “How’s the crowd taking it?”
That Sally Quinn sure can pick them, huh? An attention-seeking ham, a liar and a cheat, and a slack-ass to boot, all wrapped up in one egomaniacal, jowly package.
Don’t think one little football incident qualifies as a character flaw in the truth-telling department? Well, how about this string of half-truths and outright distortions as documented by Media Matters. (H/T to Scarecrow for the link.) And, in addition to raising defense funds for Vice Presidential ass-covering felon Scooter Libby, Thompson has represented a host of savory individuals and corporations as a high-priced lobbyist:
The actor and former U.S. senator from Tennessee added, “Nobody yet has pointed out any of my clients that didn’t deserve representation.”Thompson, who likes to cast himself as a political outsider, earned more than $1 million lobbying the federal government for more than 20 years. He lobbied for a savings-and-loan deregulation bill that helped hasten the industry’s collapse and a failed nuclear energy project that cost taxpayers more than a billion dollars.
He also was a lobbyist for deposed Haitian President Jean-Bertrand Aristide, who was widely criticized for endorsing “necklacing,” the gruesome practice of execution where gasoline-soaked tires are thrown over a person’s neck and set ablaze.
In September 1991, Aristide said: “The burning tire, what a beautiful tool! … It smells good. And wherever you go, you want to smell it.”
For even more on Thompson’s KStreet days, see here about helping another client to limit liability for asbestos-related illnesses. I mean, honestly, how bad are you as a Republican candidate when even NewsMax says you’d represent anyone for anything, as long as they paid you money? Look like Howard Baker’s golden boy is really all about the gold, whoever he has to step over to get it.
We’ve had enough Potted Shrub juvenile antics the last eight years, thank you very much, so I say we pass on Cocktail Weenie Fred (H/T to Bonkers). The nation needs a leader, not a narcissistic untalented greedy spotlight hog.
PS — Jane has her last chemo treatment today, so please send her some spare thoughts and prayers. She’s done amazingly well — would you have expected anything less? – but every little bit helps, and there is still more fight ahead of her from here. It’s a great milestone, though, and we’re all pulling for a full recovery when this is all finished, because if anyone is a fighter, it’s Jane. Go get ‘em, Jane!
Also, I’m going to be on Thom Hartmann’s show today around 2:30 pm ET. You can listen live here.

Good Morning

Good morning, pups! So good to see Christy on the airwaves.
Kathryn in MA @ 3
I hope it works better than the therapod’s did yesterday!
(((((((We love you Jane!!)))))))
Thom Hartman’s show is very good. He’s concerned the the Repugs are setting us up for 2008. As we talk only about the War they are going to declare their victory and leave Iraq.
“Would represent anyone for anything…”
That reminds me of someone’s quote about Simon Cameron, a member of Lincoln’s cabinet: “The only thing he wouldn’t steal was a red-hot stove.”
snowbird42 @ 6
Wow! I read Thom’s books about ADHD/ADD a few years back. His stuff is great, I had no idea he was on AA!
Good morning all!
In addition to the AAR web site link to listen to Christy, usually you can stream it through iTunes Radio. Go to the radio and click talk/spoken word. Air America is listed. It works better than the web site and doesn’t have the flash video commercials.
As for Fred, these sound like just the qualities the goopers like in their president. Ugh.
I love turning someone on to such a great show.
{{{Jane}}}}
snowbird42 @ 6
His and Rachel’s shows are the best on the station in my opinion. Those are the ones I pod cast to listen to while Lionel is tainting the airwaves.
Hah. That Bloomberg piece is a stitch, a hit job wrapped up in cotton candy.
Even mentor Howard Baker is putting himself at arm’s length, not crowing about what a great candidate Fred is for the GOP. What does that say about the rest of the field?
{{{{{{{{ Jane }}}}}}}}
It sure is a milestone. Lets just hope that the poisons are focusing their full attention on the killer cells and leaving the rest of her alone.
Today’s weather is going to be the kind to just stay home and hide. After that a string of great days is coming.
Kobe: take good care of Jane for us!
Mornin’, Christy — maybe Thompson’s flirtation with candidacy is actually about replenishing the Thompson family trust so his slackery heirs don’t have to work for a livin’ either /snark
{{{{{{{{{{{{ Jane }}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}
Scummy Shrummy on Mornin’Joe repeating his anecdote again about Edwards talking with Kerry TWICE within the space of a few days about his son. Guess what, Shrummy. Losing a son is a traumatic, life altering experience. I’ve seen it firsthand. With friends like Shrummy you don’t need backstabbin’ enemies.
Shrummy trying to cash in on his own book profiteering this morning.
[nope, couldn’t pry the remote outa Mr. S’s fingers]
Fred Thompson should play Dick Cheney in the Lifetime movie about his lesbian daughter. He’s a dead ringer. Maybe a little grumpier looking.
Who would vote for this guy? He looks like a grumpy old man. He looks like Nixon on a bad day. Is he younger than McCain? He doesn’t look it. He looks like a total creep.
By the way, look what a great idea it was to privatize Government…

The cornerstone of Republican philosophy turns out to be a bad idea. What a surprise!
Jane – i am concentrating on imaging that last bad cell to totally destruct under the onslaught of chemo and the entire pup pack’s positive vibe wave.
Morning all. Coffee is good, and we finally got some rain yesterday. Woo hoo!

g’mornin christy!
did you see think progress today?
one of the ag’s tells us abu torture was insisting on putting people to the death penalty without knowing anything at all about the case, he was trying to “expand the perameters”
these are sadists christy and we really have to go with that
also, glenn greenwald has another excellant piece posted over at salon about the “wireless wiretapping” program
Glenn hit’s all the right notes but I did post my signature point if view regarding “framing the debate” and here was my letter to his fine post
responding just takes a very quick registration
RevDeb @ 11
Hmm I could get Rachel’s show to listen to during Lionel. How do I do it?
morning, all… coffee’s ready – hold out your cups…
Fred… another fine example of a repuglican!
Jane,
Congrats on getting through all that! Now just try to eat well, go for walks, breath deep, love and be loved, play with your dogs, and continue to do the groundbreaking and inspiring job that you have been doing at this site – WE LOVE YOU, JANE!
christy,
i despise thompson… but, i don’t see why representing aristide is a problem. first, i’d like to know if aristide really did advocate execution by necklacing. it sounds more like usa propaganda that something consistent with his history – based on what i’ve read about haiti and usa backed actions there.
most of my info on haiti and aristide comes from democracy now!… maxine waters has also been closely involved.
‘course, as usual, i’m happy to get more information and be corrected.
Mornin’ Christy!
Sorry to go all OT so early, but I wanted to give you Lugar talking out both sides of his mouth. My call of BFD on him, Voinovich and Warner yesterday wasn’t too far from wrong, IMO. They’ll say anything. Actions speak louder than words. I’m just waiting and watching.
http://thinkprogress.org/2007/…..timetable/
snowbird42 @ 20
You have to subscribe to AAR premium, either to one show or the whole line-up. I signed up for that and Salon too in order to keep the progressive voice alive even though I have lots of problems with some of what they are doing.
Oh, and the podcasts are free of commercials. For that alone, it’s worth it.
Ann is tired of being browbeaten for being a Nazi.
christy – i love it when you are on AAR… you do such an awesome job.
also of radio-interest… is glenn greenwald’s interview on antiwar radio (can be downloaded here)
I’d say his character traits fit perfectly with rethuglican values.
selise at 23 — Thompson represented Aristide once he was removed from power the first time around, and lobbied to get him back into power for the second run. Personally, I don’t have a lot of sympathy for any leader who acts like a thug, and that includes Aristide who used a lot of intimidation and other tactics while he was in power to extreme levels. (Not that other leaders in Haiti haven’t done that as well through the years, but just because one person does it that doesn’t make it okay for someone else.)
They had a pretty good summary of the Aristide issues in The Nation a while back — the people who replaced him once he was ousted were horrid, but he truly was no saint either. What we’ve done in Haiti is appalling, but that doesn’t excuse propping up the likes of Aristide either.
10 am House Judiciary – Subcommittee on the Constitution, Civil Rights, and Civil Liberties
Oversight Hearing on: The Impact of Ledbetter v. Goodyear on the Effective Enforcement of Civil Rights Laws
From selise’s list…thank you selise for preparing this for us. Saves us so much time.
Do not take Fred Dalton Thompson lightly. He was the Senate Minority Watergate Counsel and was responsible for Howard Baker’s entire career. His reported “laziness” has in public life been limited only to his real dislike of campaigning–a trait he shares with John McCain and John Kerry. But when he puts his mind to something he is dogged and tireless. Ask his clients. He doesn’t quit. Whatever you think of his policies. take him seriously.
thanks RevDeb Ill check it out. I listen all day long in my studio
Even as his presidential campaign kicks off, Fred Thompson is still doing paid radio advertisements for his corporate overlords.
Thompson is currently doing commercials for a company called LifeLock.
LifeLock is not the kind of company that most presidential candidates would want to be associated with.
Here’s more info: http://blogs.phoenixnewtimes.com/bastard/2007/06/fred_thompson_shills_for_lifel.php
He seems to not really care about being Pres. He’s just a figure for them to manipulate. And Liz Cheney is working on his campaign…nuf said
It seems to me that Fred Thompson has looked at the last 8 years of Bush/Cheney as a model for future republican tickets and he’s auditioning for the part of the empty-suited frat-boy. What’d be nice to know is who he’s picking to actually run the country . . . er, I mean Vice President. Do we know who Cheney’s Sith Apprentice is? Maybe “Thompson/Libby 2008″ would be a bit overboard but how about “Thompson/Addington 2008″ instead?
perris @ 19
One of the things that pisses me off about it is how journalists are still willing to unquestioningly swallow Administration characterizations of the program, despite how many times they’ve been lied to about it. A CBS radio story on the subpoenas yesterday had it as “a program to listen on Americans’ overseas phone calls.
Grrr! We have no evidence other than the assurances of known liars that it was limited to overseas phone calls, and plenty of evidence that it wasn’t. Even if you’re too lazy to look that up, it would have been simple enough to just say “phone calls.”
All the best to Jane, we need her leadership, persistence, sense of humor, and ability to lay wood (old school fraternity term) to this den of thieves in Washington.
Besides, I’m sure Kobe & co. continue to have an ambitious travel & vacation schedule and wouldn’t trust just anyone to coordinate it for them!
On to Freddy T.
The more I read about him, the more convinced I am that he will get the nomination. He’s damn near perfect for their side;
No real convictions to speak of
Is already in the bag for corporate interests
Can’t be connected in any meaningful way to this disaster of an administration.
He’s an empty suit like Bush, but can read his lines better.
That said, he’s still gonna lose big in the election to whomever get the Democratic nomination.
If he doesn’t lose, I’ll bet Toronto is a lovely city to live in, even in the winter!
Redshift @ 35
Astounding how lazy the MSM is. They are content to regurgitate the rethug talking points and their owners are more than happy to oblige. It just keeps the $$$ rolling in for defense contracts and “privatization.”
Are we really surprised?
STTP—”no real convictions to speak of”
Criminal or philosophical?
Good Morning …
Heard an interesting “rumor” on talk radio which ties right in. This is THE first time there has not been a successor ready in the wings from one Prez to take over the reigns and there has been the talk about McCain being the anointed boy, that is why he kisses butt now but now they are putting in Thompson’s name. Cheney resigns for health and legal issues and Thompson is appointed and confirmed (how would they not?) AND there is the heir to the Neo-con coup of America.
It is 25 hours until my vacation starts …. woohoo…. Yasoo Christy….. Kalamera…[Hello and good morning]
Thompson needs a cop to play “Law” for his “Law and Order” campaign. Erik Estrada, maybe?
Do we know who Cheney’s Sith Apprentice is?
Maybe Fred just keeps Darth as V.P.? Is the V.P. term-limited?

I was wondering the same thing, but my mind wasn’t devious enough to come up with Thompson/Addington!
Now that’s a horror show!
Addington is the only guy to give serious competition to Rove for the title of “Worst Person in the World!” (White House edition)
Will do Christy…. I indulged myself and bought additional lenses, telephoto, wide angle and close up for my digital camera…..
Dear pups, i am very sorry to go off topic, but i need your help. i have a recurring monthly fee on my credit card to the tune of $800ish, and it is ruining me. My son put it on there (oh, he WILL pay me back) but we can’t get hold of anyone to get it removed.
The charges come from Stompernet.com in Norcross, GA. i did speak to someone at 505-480-6515 who (had a deep gravelly voice) said that he was the wrong Stomper. He was Stomper.net and Stompernet.com was billing me and gave me a name (last – Fallon) that phone no and address.
Funny thing, tho, later on my phone rang and i said hello several times, no one answered but i could hear voices in the background – the deep gravelly and a woman! So, i started to listen! i couldn’t distinguish what he was saying but could hear her more clearly – she said “So, you called her?” He said something about “i gave her….” and she said, ” That wasn’t very nice.” So, did he give me correct info or was diverting the lawyers to some one else (like i can afford lawyers, and what are they going to do against an unknown?)
So, does anyone have a clue as what to do next?
I so appreciate your indulgence in allowing me to ask this.
Love, Kathryn.
RevDeb @ 44
Double toochee!
I was shootin’ for philosophical, but whatcha got?
katymine @ 40
I do not agree that Thompson could be confirmed as VP. I just don’t think there’s ANY way that the Democrats in Congress would give a boost to ANYONE assumed to be running for the presidency like that this close to an election. Nor would the Rs running agree to it either. And even though we’re talking McCain, Brownback, and TAncredo, they do have SOME supporters in both houses.
IF Cheney were to resign, the confirmable choice would almost have to be someone who would be considered a caretaker and nothing more who would have to pledge that s/he was NOT running in ‘08.
My $.02
Hang in there Jane! I’ll be thinking about you today.
Kathryn at 50 — Contact your state attorney general’s office. Most of them have a consumer fraud protection division. Also, contact your credit card company and inform them that you have a fraudulent charge showing up on your card and that you dispute the claim. Contact them both by phone and in writing — and keep records of calls, dates, times, and copies of anything you send. The credit company is required to look into the disputed claim — let them know what you have done thus far to resolve the problem. There are other things that you can do as well, but that’s a good first step.
Especially if this is some sort of charging scam, your AG’s office needs to know about it. They often have a consumer protection division, and they can charge them criminally for perpetuating a fraud in your state. HTH!
egregious at 46
Count me in for the first hour! What might we see in Conyers’ Committee this morning?
ha! the Republican pollster who was supposed to ask questions on the PBS Dem forum?
Pam has it that he’s been removed!
Kathryn — One other thing, you might also contact your local police and file a complaint. They can pull your phone records and look into the call back — although local folks around here are loathe to get into comsumer fraud issues because they don’t have the expertise, sometimes they have been looking at a particular company. That’s also true for a local FBI office — especially if the company is running a nationwide scam from an internet site. Might be worth a call anyway.
Christy – i did talk to the credit card co and they said as it was my son, there is no fraud. they couldn’t remove it unless i were to press charges.
The AG is a great idea.
Christy Hardin Smith @ 29
thanks for the link christy, it is pretty consistent with other reporting i’ve read. here’s the worst that your article had to say about aristide:
generalized allegations are acknowledged – without being specific and without even saying who’s making them and do they have any evidence. in the article aristide comes off soundling like the most reasonable of the parties involved (including clinton). isn’t it likely that the allegations came from a usa propaganda effort? given the circumstances, i’d still like to know if there really is any good evidence that he is so bad, that given the circumstances, representing him is something that should be condemned. i just don’t see it – including in the article you gave me.
the people of haiti wanted aristide back, and it certainly looks like they were better off when he returned. and after all, maxine waters supported aristide too (although, i don’t think she got paid for it *g*)
p.s. i still think thompson’s a jerk… but i think the argument might be better made with some other of his clients.
Kathryn in MA @ 50
I would say to call your credit card company and tell them you’re disputing the charge (and any previous ones, too.) If you don’t know who it is or what it’s for and you didn’t put it on there, you’re under no obligation to pay it.
LibertyLee @ 31
Thanks for the advice, but after the damage done during this administration by a man that a questionable majority thought was a good guy with whom to have a beer, we take ALL Republican candidates seriously. They ALL want us bogged down in Iraq, with the exception of Ron Paul, and in his case it may merely be a matter of semantics.
What I wonder is why so many hit pieces against Fred? Are other Republicans worried about him that right-wing owned outlets carry puff pieces embedded with daggers about Fred?
Thompson is George W Bush with a trophy wife.
Frank @ 63, more like the booby prize.
Kathryn in MA @ 60
Is your son of legal age to affirm contracts in your state? In MI, if a child is 17 or under, they cannot legally affirm. That may also provide some protection.
Kathryn in MA @ 58
can you cancel the card and get a new one? just like when you when your purse gets stolen (happened to me) i called my credit union, they put an immediate hold on the card and sent me a new on. i had to transfer any legit monthly charges to the new card number, but that was it. took 2-3 days to get the new card.
i’m so glad christy is here to give advice. many thanks to christy for helping our good friend with smart advice.
Kathryn in MA @ 58
Well, that’s annoying. I’m pretty sure the credit card company is wrong about that — if you tell them it’s a recurring charge the company refuses to stop even though you’ve requested them to, it shouldn’t matter if it was authorized originally. But the state may be a better route at this point.
Don’t underestimate to power of High School football in small town America.
On Glenn’s piece, it is remarkable that the press still takes the default view that the administration’s refusal to report who they have been spying on to the relevant oversight agencies means that they haven’t been engaging in domestic spying.
Sorry I missed the CTG retrospective yesterday–power outages can be disruptive.
Hey Rayne–don’t forget that Jesus’ General is coming by tonight.
Alas, he is 21. i did cancel the card and opened another card with that credit card co and the charge followed to that new card. So i called again and said’ unclear on the concept. they started to get nasty at that point.
Thank you all for diverting your attention to this matter – the AG sounds good.
**blessings being heaped upon all pups’ head****

selise at 59 — Aristide was the lesser of the thugs in Haiti, but he was still a thug in a lot of ways in terms of how he handled the population. We mishandled the entire situation from start to finish — the US is far from having clean hands on it, truly — but Aristide’s hands were far from clean, either. Truly. See here, here, here, and here for some varying perspectives. I have found that where the rhetoric gets most heated is where the most variant shades of gray seep into the mix — and Aristide is one of those areas.
selise @ 66
I had three months of recurring charges on a canceled card go through.
Looking up stompernet, this is a get rich quick scam, right?
I’m afraid this is going to take some persistence. Presumably these people are well-practiced in continuing to bill you.
But their terms of service do say:
. For cancellation instructions, a user should log into the user’s account and click the “Billing Information” section under “My Account”.
Have you tried that?
Kathryn – I made my comment before i read that you had already done that. Can you move to a different card company?
Not to pick nits, but I’m *sure* you meant to write:
Liberty Lee, not only does Fred’s incredibly good looks, make him a major babe magnet, he is also a magnet for dirty money from dirty corporations. Both Fred and his clients are serious, seriously corrupt. Freddie boy helped create the Savings and Loan scandal, $125 billion worth of serious corruption.
According to USA Today, Thompson was being paid to lobby against victims of asbestos, as late as 2006.
———————–
After he left the Senate in 2003, Thompson resumed his acting career with a role as the district attorney on TV’s Law & Order. Less visibly, he registered in 2004 as a lobbyist for Equitas, a company created to manage the asbestos liability for Lloyd’s of London.
Equitas hired a bevy of lobbyists to protect its interests in the proposal to set up a federal trust fund, paid for by insurers, asbestos-makers and others, to compensate asbestos victims. The bill failed to pass, but before that happened, Equitas got what it wanted: a change in a provision the company said singled out foreign insurers for unfavorable treatment. Jon Nash, a firm spokesman, on Wednesday credited Thompson as having “contributed to the successful outcome.”
The company paid Thompson $760,000 from 2004 to 2006, according to Senate records.
To Kathryn in MA @ 51: Everything CHS says @55. In addition, I would cancel the CC if you are able so as to cut off any further charges.
I believe our new AG Martha Coakley is quite responsive to these things. I’m told she has brought in a retired US Bankruptcy Judge to advise her regarding these consumer credit fraud issues.
If any collection activity starts, reply in writing advising that you intend to assert all rights under MGL c. 93A. This statute provides for recovery of triple damages plus attorney fees.
Keep the FDL community posted.
Kathryn — If your son charged the item, did he have the authority to make the charge? If not, then you have a right to challenge it — but you need to do it in writing, as I remember it. There’s some helpful information here, too. Bottom line is that you need to make certain that disputes are done not just by phone, but also in writing. There is some “magic language” that needs to be used, but I didn’t do a lot of consumer protection representation, so I’m not positive what it is, but maybe the link will help with that — there are some forms that the FTC has put together to help consumers.
Love to you, Jane! Here’s to a full and complete and lasting recovery.

Despite any negatives we can point to, Fred Thompson is the perfect candidate for the GOP. Why? Off topic
Coultergeist
David Gregory tries to rehabilitate Coulter by saying that she really does have a point, once you strip away the hate speech. This reminds me of the old mainer joke:
Bert: Mildred, what’s this?
Mildred: It’s a sassage. Is it good?
Bert: Pretty good. But the-ah ain’t much to it afta ya clean it.
Near the end, Gregory wants to know if Edwards thinks this use of hate speech is a problem on the left as well as the right. Up until that point, she’s done fine, but this question flusters her. She needn’t be flustered. The answer is that there are NO prominent voices on television or radio on the left who engage in hate speech, and she should challenge Gregory to name some names, while it is easy to rattle off hate-spouting wingnuts who are given lots of TV and radio time.
It is great that the Edwards campaign is confronting these issues directly. The bounce in contributions stemming from the campaign’s doing so demonstrates that we really have had enough.

that was me! I snuck into your house, made the coffee but your husband took the credit!

What will Leahy do? We expected this but it is important what our guys do next

I believe one of Thompson’s chief advisors is Cheney’s other daughter (Liz?), but I can’t verify at this moment, gotta run.

Selise is right. Jesse Helms and the Republicans didn’t oppose Aristide because he was a jerk; they opposed him because he actually was attempting to do things for poor people. Now Haiti is ruled by lawless warlords much as Somalia has been for most of the past two decades — and just as with Somalia, Bush went out of his way to take out the one government (in Aristide’s case, an elected government) that was even remotely capable of maintaining order.

Ha! Beat me to it!
Here’s the AP link.

Yes, Liz Cheney and Mary Matalin are both advisors for Freddie. Liz is supposedly foreign policy…
snowbird42 @ 6
But that would decimiate Haliburton’s profits.
dakine01 @ 98
What is even more shocking is that Broder, the Dean of Washington Deans, admitted, “Boy, was I wrong.”, about Cheney that is.
Maybe Cheney would not share his quail wings with Broder, like Broder’s good friend Karl.
The HJC live feed is up, waiting on 10am.

The stated reason for the meeting is to review the impact of Ledbetter v. Goodyear on the Effective Enforcement of Civil Rights Laws.
We’ll see what the Chair has to say soon…

Do you think these words might motivate them? (em, mine)
On the hit piece on Thompson. We can expect to enjoy a lot of these pieces directed at each and every one of the major Rethug candidates. They are all a plack of unprincipled vipers, and will go at each other with all the venom they usually reserve for Democrats until the Convention. Reminds me nothing so much as the squabbling between Bormann, Goebbels, Himmler and Goering over who would become the next Fuhrer.
When Republicans are not told what to do, they lose their way.
I think this is the link to the House Judiciary hearings. You probably need realplayer.
Phoenix Woman @ 108
What is the next step? How do they get this into court? When can the Sargeant at Arms go in and take the papers?
GeorgeSimian @ 115
Kagro X was writing about the subpoenas re the warrentless wiretaps but I think his steps probably apply here too.
Fresh thread for everyone.
dakine01 @ 54
he would only need a majority in each House of Congress to be confirmed. not seeing that as too tough these days.
Last Chemo for Jane YEAH!!!
You have been truly and inspiration Jane!
Thinking of you.
Fred Thompson has been diagnosed with non-hodgkin’s lymphoma. An immune system compromising disease, for which there is no cure. Right now there is probably no way to gauge the effects a rigorous campaign will have on a 65 year old with this diagnosis, but I would be very suspicious of who the party chooses as his running mate. Better yet, if he wins, he could pick Dead Eye Dick as his chief of staff. Freddy could become the biggest nightmare yet.
selise @ 94
ok. i’ve read all 4 links.
link #1 – i claim this is propaganda and an obvious hit piece. for example refering three times to aristide as a “dictator” – when he was elected by a large majority of the population (more than once).
btw, this article is from “Le Figaro (conservative), Paris, France”. france has a long history of very dirty intervention in haiti. while that is no reason to dismiss the article, i do think there is reason to be a bit extra skeptical.
link #2 – from CSM (very good source, imo). describes the situation in haiti after aristide was forceably removed the second time. i don’t see any accusations against aristide. the worse statement is “Violent musclemen with big guns, loyal to Aristide, control more than a dozen sections of the capital…” that doesn’t sound like a condemnation to aristide – especially as he doesn’t control these people (he’s not even in the country)
link #3 – from the jurist. seems quite supportive of aristide, while condemning the action of the usa, canada and france.
link #4 – from human rights watch. seems quite balanced – describes lots of problems and atrocities in haiti (but doesn’t claim that aristide is responsible)… hrw makes specific recommendations of actions aristide should take to address the problems.
in conclusion, i don’t see anything to conclude that thompson should be condemned for representing aristide – unless you believe the outrageous claims in link #1. in addition to link #1 appearing on it’s face to be transparent propaganda, if there was evidence support their claims, i’d think your CSM or HRW links would have mentioned some of it.
montag @ 96
wow! if he’s right (and he usually is), the propaganda effort against aristide has been much worse than i even suspected. thank you for the link.
Phoenix Woman @ 108
thanks pw. i didn’t even know about jesse helms’ opposition.

you’re most welcome. please feel free to send me additions/corrections and recording requrests.

Agree. In general, after the ending of slavery in the Caribbean, most of the islands follow the same pattern: pay them less than what it costs to live, give them no or tiny plots of land, control all the shipping so they can’t leave. Works out better than owning them. Haiti / DR was at one time the most prosperous island of them all. It is still the same fight.
Jane,
My niece is having orthopedic surgery at 2:00 today in Maine and asked that I visualize a river between me (Chicago) and her along which to send good thoughts. I just realized that that river will be going through Connecticut! You looked so radiant in D.C.; I cannot but believe that reflects very good changes inside. You are an amazing woman. My best.
didn’t know Jane was in chemo… hang in there!
Jane, we all adore you, the most gorgeous, ravishing blogger in the whole world; the light of our ’sphere. Please take care of yourself, build up your strength and do well.
I’ve been through radiation though not chemo, and I know for sure that none of it is a picnic. Your loyal fans are thinking about you always and ever.
Very very very best.
First: thoughts and prayers for Jane; she is a true leader.
Christy, I think that you are excellent on the current situation in Iraq, domestic politics, and the law. I think that you stepped out of your league in trying to “necklace” JB Aristide. This was another case of the big boys in the US and in world corporations being unhappy with Aristide’s populist program. There is no way that his government was on the same continuum with the group that w enabled to replace Aristide. It is good that some firepups supplied you with good work. That is one that I would have to give FDT a good mark for doing.
I would not give him good marks for most of his current work. I do seem to see a problem with much of the writing that is opposing him. Most of what I have seen says that he has spent 20 years as a lobbyist, but only earned $1MM. Either he is incompetent or the information is wrong.
