There’s no question that videoblogging has profoundly impacted our political landscape. Take 2006 for example: You have a macaca moment, a candy shop encounter, a stairway chase, and even a re-enactment (see above). Those are just the videos that occurred to me off the top of my head. What is it about these four amateur web videos that caused them to stick with me for nearly a year?
Stumped? Well, the first one arguably changed the outcome of an election, the second was made by my friend and yours Connecticut Bob, and the last two were made by the one and only spazeboy. In 2006 it seemed that you couldn’t go anywhere without bumping into one of us camcorder-wielding videobloggers. That’s a bit of an exaggeration, though it doesn’t have to be. I believe that if anyone can play guitar, then certainly anyone can videoblog.
I’ve written a beginner’s guide called “Spazeboy’s Guide to Political Videoblogging” that despite its boring little title is actual the culmination of quite a bit of work–all undertaken in the hope that 2008 will truly be the year of the videoblogger.
Videoblogging is not all glitz and glamour, however, because it’ll never get you Person of the Year again. For every video that gets 100,000 plays at YouTube, there are thousands that get fewer than 100. Videoblogging can be time-consuming and requires showing up early. Videoblogging takes practice. But it’s all worth it, because videoblogging is part of what I’ll describe as the “new” public record.
When you show up at a press conference for your favorite candidate with your video camera, it doesn’t matter so much what makes the evening news. Back on July 20, 2006 I brought my camcorder to a press conference where Ned Lamont was going to unveil his health care plan. Hours earlier, the latest poll numbers were released and Lamont was up by 13 percentage points. No TV/video media outlet that attended the press conference mentioned the health care plan–except for me. I didn’t follow the shiny red bouncing ball, and I didn’t have to keep my video under 30 seconds.
Or back on October 6, 2006 when Connecticut Bob encountered Joe Lieberman at a campaign stop. Bob began to ask Joe a question about his characterizing the calls for Dennis Hastert’s resignation as house speaker as a “partisan frenzy” when Joe interrupted, insisting that “Ned Lamont said that…” At this point in Bob’s video, he cuts in a few seconds of video from the day before where Joe characterizes the call for Dennis Hastert’s resignation as house speaker as a “partisan frenzy.”
The point that I hope these brief stories from 2006 in Connecticut make is that without videobloggers, the whole story often does not get told. It’s up to us bloggers on the left to make sure that our side of the story gets a platform. So I encourage you to take a look at my humble guide to videoblogging. It is complete in it’s current form (I just published it today!), yet still very much a work in progress. Did I mention that I greatly value the feedback of this community–I’m counting on you guys to tell me if it sucks. Here is a look at the table of contents:
I’ll be hanging around in the comments on this thread, answering questions and enjoying my time with my FDL friends. If you haven’t already looked me up on Facebook or joined the Firedoglake group there, now’s as good a time as any.

spazeboy! your manual looks wonderful…. now, i’m hoping that someone will write a supplemental on apple video editing!
Something funny is going on with the site. Is anyone else having problems?
Oh … and love Jane’s hat. ;-)
hinky toobz.
The site is acting weird.
I cannot thank you enough for sharing this Spazeboy.
Joe Klein’s conscience @ 2
Yes, I couldn’t get into the comments or see the rest of the article until now.
Spaaaaaze!!!
Joe Klein’s conscience @ 2
I had to switch to IE from Firefox to get the article pages (beyond the home page) to display. Thinking it was my problem, I rebooted, but that made no difference. I still need IE to get to full post with comments, Firefox just keeps spinning. That has never happened to me before.
And it’s also very odd that there are so few comments here and also about Jane’s latest post.
Alright guys, I’m in!
Selise, I’d love to get my hands on a macbook, and as soon as I do I’ll be sure to update with instructions/illustrations for iMovie.
Eureka Springs, you’re welcome!
Pach, wassup?!
Mods:
When I try to get past the FDL home page I have been getting error messages, network connection messages, on my Powerbook G4 OS X version 10.4.01, Safari version 2.0.4 (419.3). I’ve been trying since about 2:30 PM Pacific, and this is the first time i connected to a comment feed.
Boring little title. Not at all. I love these geeky, techy guides.
I bought a fairly cheap Canon PowerShot. To my surprise, it has a movie mode, 8 to 16 minutes of NTSC video. It is not the greatest, but good enough to capture some Macaca.
Just took a look at the vid at the top about grabbed tickets and denial of entrance. Who is putting this activity, (denying entrance, etc.) into motion?
Oklahoma kiddo @ 13
This video is an oldie but a goodie, but you can see Jane’s original post on the event here.
oh great, PEARL is back……….
and so am I
Boy, was the site white with error messages
Anyone know what happened?
Hi Spazeboy!
Long time no see. Moving south so it will be a longer time yet.
Frank33 @ 12
You can use the video captured by your Canon PowerShot and edit/upload it using some of the same steps in my guide. I think I will incorporate a bit on how to work with video from digital still cameras in a future revision.
Hey Spazeboy! I love your guide. What inspired you to put the effort into making it?
RevDeb @ 16
They need you down south, no doubt about it. When you leavin’?
Turley doing some good stuff on Keith’s show tonight!
Spazeboy @ 19
Moving to PA in mid-August. Snarlin’Arlin and Blue Dog Casey, here I come!
Joe Klein’s conscience @ 3
Me too – its a Burberry and when I saw this video at the lake last year I went through my storage and resurrected my faithful old Burberry and my Dad’s too. I talked mr. brat into wearing Dad’s with me donning mine and we still do on cool damp days when we hike around the forest and the nearby state coastal park south of Carmel beach. In addition to all her other talents our fearless leader Jane is in a classic league all her own.
the position adopted by Mr. Addington and Mr. Cheney is absurd… if anyone else adopted it, they’d be out of a job… Jonathon Turley
Turley saying “lack of adult supervision in the Admin.” That about sums it up though I’d say that it was more sociopathic than anything else.
RevDeb @ 20
I am looking at this Truley thing also. It’s incredible. Like Turley suggests, and I agree, these crooks are just running out the clock.
CGG @ 18
I learned a lot last year, and because I’m not getting any younger I wanted to write it all down before I forgot.
Seriously though, I saw a need for a guide like mine that walks new videobloggers through the steps of getting the right camera and accessories, getting the video off the camera, and getting it onto YouTube. The process is second nature to young nerds like me, but mystifying to a lot of very smart people because it’s not as user-friendly as it could and should be.
Favorite chase scene ever? Spazeboy and Joe Lieberman in a stairwell!
Now Eugene Robinson from the WaPo on Keith. Good show.
OT Sell the WallStreet on a bump if Rupert holds true to form his cable business will be covering the lost. But he probably finanaced this move based on the price of his shares as collateral. Given his past history with newspapers I’m not sure he has enough money in collateral to make this deal if the market goes down. Remember Enron! no Lefty should be hurt by a Rightwing loser.
re Darth KO asks “is this the tipping point or does he not even tip?” Robinson saying this is a big week but who is going to tip? W is happy with his lackeys.
Robinson says we had no idea how well Cheney was doing accomplishing his dirty deeds (dirty tricks?).
Dick Cheney has a constituency of one – that’s George W Bush – Robinson from WaPo
We’re back and we’re bad… Thunderdome here we come…
Leahy: Bush’s lawlessness worse than Nixon’s
Is it Leaky Pants vs Bum Ticker ?? Or is Mad Max going to send up AbuG to thee…
Yes! Pass the popcorn!
Gabe @ 27
Absolutely! That was the stuff of high drama.
Gawd, was Watergate by comparision to what’s going on now, ’small time’ or what?
Spazeboy!
This is like inspiring. I’m gonna have to give it some thought. You mean ordinary people can do this stuff?
Hm.
Hope you are well.
Oklahoma kiddo @ 34
a mere boil on the butt compared with the rampant cancer that is this administration.
SeamusD @ 11
I got the same messages continually on a MacBook. Went to Marcy’s site for awhile and now, obviously, everything is OK.
Hardballs really scraping bottom for tomorrow night. Snitchens V. Sharpton. Why bother?
Oklahoma kiddo @ 35
About the same, except now the government has more tools of repression.
egregious @ 35
I am well, and hope you are too. I’m glad to have inspired. Ordinary people really can do this stuff, I just happen to be extraordinary. *g*
The Republican Party. The pro-family party. “No child left behind”.
Attack that killed kids likely missed target
NEW YORK – The U.S. special operations forces attack June 17 that resulted in the death of seven Afghan children likely missed its primary target, U.S. officials tell NBC News.
Hope punaise sees this – Raw Story has a link to the Union Leader story today about a new poll showing GORE beats Hillary among current contenders! Woo Hoo!
ReElect President Al Gore in 2008. Accept no substitute.
Hi Spazeboy!
RevDeb @ 24
Best thing he said was that they are eventually going to lose, and they are acting so recklessly that they will throw the reasons for Exec privlege out the window. All Congress has to prove is that they are investigating a crime and there goes exec priv.
I love Turley.
Elliott @ 43
Hey, what’s happening?
newspaperbrat @ 43
Oh, yeah: hubba hubba. front paged at TPM too.
What races will you target in 2008?
Folks – when the server had a little problem, we posted a note over on Facebook in the Firedoglake group … if you have a problem in the future, check there and if possible we’ll update on FB so folks aren’t madly refreshing.
and Hi Spazeboy! thanks to you I had my minute of fame in Blog Wars!
newspaperbrat @ 42
Awsome news. BTW, are you still having link troubles? If so, email me.. I have an idea..)
Siun @ 48
Could you fill in a Luddite on the Facebook thingie?
Spazeboy,
If you give your steps to CTBlogger he can translate them to Mac or write his own. He tried showing me how to do it one night at Sullivan’s. Needless to say that was not a great learning environment.
Still, the CT bloggers in general took videoblogging to a new and excellent level.
CGG @ 47
Jim Himes, the Democrat running against Chris Shays in Connecticut’s 4th CD. It’s another David v. Goliath thing, and I love me an uphill battle.
Spazeboy @ 53
Jim Himes you say? I think I might have heard of him. ;)
I can’t wait to see the footage of Shays that you come up with!
Siun @ 48
Hi there!
Thanks to your line in Blog Wars, everyone is going to remember me for my horrible blue/black hair! This videoblogging guide is to be my new legacy–not the bad dye job. :)
This is great, videoblogging really did change history.
.wow.
Spazeboy’s videoblogging manual is awesome.
I would just like to publicly take credit for the inspirational and brilliant camera work in the Beau/Jane ticket snatching re-enactment film. Were you not all impressed by my awesome ability to…stand still holding a camera? Clearly I have a bright future as a documentary filmmaker, as long as documentary filmmaking involves standing still while holding a camera!
Okay, maybe not. :-) But really, it was me holding the camera!
Us blogger-notyetvideobloggers down in CT-04 sure hope you’ll come down and help us beat Lieberman’s BFF Chris Shays this year, Spazeboy.
Wonder how the polls will look when Gore officially declares.
Vote Gore. If you want change.
Never mind…pretty self-explanatory
Even a caveman can do it (sorry couldn’t help it).
RevDeb @ 51
I think he might be interested in writing about iMovie–if he has the time–but I believe that many of my steps are applicable to all platforms. In any case, I’d love to get my hands on a Mac. They’re sexy and all the cool kids at my new school will have them.
Thanks for the props on videoblogging last year. I really think that Bob, CTBlogger and I were able to make a splash because the eyes were on our state all last summer. There are tons of great vloggers out there and I hope my guide inspires tons more to join their ranks.
Fabulous video blogging guide, Spazeboy. You are a pioneer.
And congratulations on getting into Weslyan. You’re gonna have so much fun and blow them all away.
Maura @ 56
((((((((((MAURA!))))))))))
Your video was awesome & so are you!
Maura @ 56
Maura is so right! She’s the talented and until-now uncredited camera operator behind the re-enactment. If she can do it, anyone can.
And Shays’ days in the House are numbered…
Oh, wait! Ya’ll beat me to it!
Hope some FDLers will come on over to the Himes for Congress Web site. Jim has a goal of recruiting 500 supporters before Saturday, and support from some folks from FDL, especially those of you who were such amazing Lamont supporters, will make a big difference.
Jim was a great supporter of Ned Lamont and is going to win the very last Congressional seat held by a Republican in New England…the seat of Chris “Abu Ghraib was just a sex ring” Shays.
It’s yet another opportunity to re-defeat Joe Lieberman and his BFF Shays. In fact, we just found out that Joe is moving back to CT-04, to my hometown of Stamford. You know I’ll be rolling out the welcome wagon…or maybe the kiss float? Maybe he can stop by an Irish pub here and call me a plant again.
:-)
What do you mean “If she can do it, anyone can.?” She is most excellent and not to be trifled with. Careful how you say such things.
I also just wanted to say that I personally made a contribution so I could have my own copy of Spazeboy’s guide to video blogging as well as all the updates. Well worth it.
Jane Hamsher @ 60
Thank you for letting me share it with the FDL community, and for the congrats. I’m looking forward to videoblogging the numerous political and musical events on campus.

Spazeboy, you should have kicked the punk kid’s ass when he stole the ticket out of your hand.
Spazeboy @ 63
another one’ll bite the dust
QUEEN
Spazeboy @ 63
Ha! Is that like the GEICO slogan, “So easy, even a caveman could do it?”
Spazeboy – Thanks for this great new resource, and for all you have accomplished in Connecticut.
Wesleyan is darn lucky to have you.
Yeah!!! We’re Back!!! FB just doesn’t cut it!!! Good alternate, yet, sadly lacking!!! *g*
Videoblogging…? Did someone say Videoblogging??? :)
I’m in! I got mad skillz too!
*xyz!!!!!!!
Awesome to see you here. I still remember fondly our insane 3AM lawn sign blitz for Ned. What an adventure! You rock.
RevDeb @ 64
AND
Maura @ 69
Bad word choice on my part. No disrespect intended. Sorry Maura!
James … Facebook is pretty intuitive (sorta) … get a login and follow the initial directions to get started. We’ll be talking more about using it as the weeks go by so you can pick up tips as we move along.
*xyz @ 70
Thanks! I’m going to have to prove myself @ Wes, but I’m excited to have the chance.
BillO WPITW for whining about being called a conservative
newspaperbrat @ 62
(((((((((((newspaperbrat))))))))))
Thanks!!! I really have no video talent whatsoever, but I sure do appreciate the hug.
Nate @ 72
Good point, because actually Chris Dodd called for people to meet with their Senators during the recess and do some videoblogging (Jane’s post earlier today). I don’t think it’s necessary to track down Dodd for his stance on the Dodd amendment which leaves only one option for CT residents…
It’ll be a reunion special!
Joe Klein’s conscience @ 3
Gasp, I’m shocked, I tell you I’m shocked they stopped Jane and Spazeboy from openly participating!!! ;-) (Psst, must be Jane’s Natural Born Killah Instinct!!!)
Spazeboy @75
HA! I thought it was hilarious. No apologies necessary. I’m not that sensitive. And I am a bit of a cavewoman when it comes to video. ;-)
I have a doggie video blog Dogster
CGG @ 80
::shudder:: I get chills just thinking about it.
Spazeboy—1,000% great work to get your manual on-line, free, and with tech support if you contribute a little or lot of cash!!! That tape of you and Jane was so great, so unlike any previous political tapes, I drove over from upstate New York to meet you. Prior to introduction I taped you taping Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton at a Lamont rally in a New Haven church and you thought I was probably the opposition.
With help from you and CTBob and Lipris who was working with Brian Keeler I was able to get some tapes up for both John Hall and Kirsten Gillibrand. I agree very much that people like me need some extra support even though the process is quite learnable.
It’s great to have a manual up there for groups around the country to learn from. Great move, great movie!
Hi Spazeboy… I’d like to chat more about this but I’m headed out the door again. I’ve got a lot of input in ways I think people can make a video impact, even without interviewing candidates. By just putting out news bulletins and street interviews and mini-documentaries about specific issues and current events. Stuff like that. And I’ve got a lot of good online free tools that make it quite easy to edit and create your own videos.
RevDeb @ 65
Thanks for coming to my defense, though. :-)
Griffin @ 85
Thanks Griffin. I totally remember that event at the church, and I was relieved to learn you’re one of the good guys. And while contributors get my ear for their questions and first crack at updates and at the printer friendly PDF, I plan to continue maintaining the guide for free.
Nate @ 86
Sorry you have to run, but you can get in touch with me at your leisure (contact page). You’re right about doing video for a variety of events, and filming more than just stump speeches.
FYI, new thread
Maura @ 75
Maura!
It was an honor to be a small part of your team.
You really worked your heart out for Ned – and I will never forget it.
Looks like there’s a new thread, so I just want to say thanks again to Jane and the FDL folks for having me over. It’s always a pleasure and I hope y’all can put the videoblogging guide to good use (let’s whip the Republicans in 2008!). See you soon!
Spazeboy—
You are doing awesome work and we thank you SOO much.
You have inspired so many people here.
Yay Spazeboy! Your how-to guide will be invaluable to an entire legion of video bloggers. Well done!
Sorry I missed the conversation here tonight, but I’m really glad to see your post.
And, of course, we owe a big debt of gratitude to the “Godfather of Connecticut Video Blogging”, CT Blogger!
Hey, Beau!
Tom Friedman, in the New York Times started my day yesterday with a cup of whine – did you know that a person can’t even snipe at a line jumper anymore – they might have a blog! They might report you for being rude! Whaaaahhhh!!!
Well, that’s just too bad, Mr. Friedman. And bloggers can report on more than just rudeness; they report the authenticity of the moment, even lawbreaking. It’s bloggers who truthfully document reality, without the filter provided by the media lapdogs. Remember the picture of Lieberman’s car in the handicapped parking place? It never happened? Whaaahhh!! Who you going to trust, me or your lyin’ eyes?
Hey spazeboy—
Sent you some paypal support this morning. Keep up the good work.
