Why do I sense that if it ever started to reach this point that toothless Mitch would do all in his power to make sure it didn’t happen even if it meant directing Jim Bunning or some other cipher to vote with the dems and give them wins JUST to avoid Cheney having to perform his duties?

“I concealed the nature and extent of my true relationship with Italia Federici,” Griles confessed to the judge yesterday in a statement interrupted by stifled sobs. Choking out the words, a burly, red-faced Griles told Huvelle that “this has been the most difficult time in my life. My guilty plea has brought me great shame and embarrassment.”

And the shame wasn’t about to end. “Even now, you continue to minimize and try to excuse your conduct,” the judge told him, giving him twice as much time behind bars as prosecutors had recommended. “You went far beyond keeping your relationship with Ms. Federici a secret.”

Some romantics shower their women with wine and roses. Griles did better than that. Prosecutors said he asked Abramoff to fund a charity proposed by one woman he was dating. They said he asked Abramoff to get his law firm to hire two other women he was dating. And then there was all that Abramoff tribal money that went to Federici. Two decades Griles’s junior, she was the one who introduced the two men and eventually helped with the Abramoff probe after pleading guilty to tax and perjury charges.

When the Interior Department’s inspector general looked into his dealings with lobbyists, Griles, a former mining lobbyist, sought the counsel of Sue Ellen Wooldridge, another woman in the department. Wooldridge, who later joined the Justice Department, became Griles’s third wife in March, three days after his guilty plea.

Teddy — Cheney and Bush were interviewed separately, but I believe their respective counsel’s may have been present. Need to check to be certain on that, though, but I seem to recall Bush’s attorney specifically being in the room with him based on reports.

Does anyone besides me think that Ann Coulter is being paid by the liability insurance lobby to go after John Edwards? Not directly, of course, that would be too crude. But I am sure there are many ways to route lucre to the Blonde Lamprey without leaving tracks, esp. in the back alleys of K St. Why do I feel this? Yesterday Coulter made a specific reference that she might stop attacking Edwards if he stopped “stealing money from doctors” (her words). That was too unsubtle by half, and very revealing. Coulter is not attacking Edward’s fitness to be president, she is attacking the fact that he was a liability lawyer.

(Actually, doctors do not pay to settle for liability suits. They pay for liability insurance. It’s the insurance companies that have a hit order out on Edwards. So she is being doubly deceptive here.)

Years ago, in a lifetime far away, you did not oppose the legalization of marijuana. Years ago, in our dorm rooms at Hofstra University, you, me, Billy, your future brother-in-law, Ivan, Jonathan, Peter, Janet, Nancy and a wealth of other students smoked dope.

Sure, we had to tape the doors shut, burn incense and open the windows, but we got high, and yet we grew up okay, without the help of the Office of National Drug Control Policy’s advice.

We grew up to become lawyers. Our other friends, as you go down the list, are doctors, professors, parents, political consultants and professionals. No one ever got cancer from smoking pot or diabetes from using a joint. And the days of our youth we look back fondly upon as years where we stood up, were counted and made a difference, from Earth Day in 1970 to helping bring down a president and end a war in Southeast Asia a few years later.

We smoked pot when we took over Weller Hall to protest administrative abuses of students’ rights. You smoked pot as you stood on the roof of the University Senate protesting faculty exclusivity. As the President of the Student Senate in 1969, you condemned the raid by Nassau County police on our dormitories, busting scores of students for pot possession.

Lets not forget about our past Sec. of Interior, Gale Norton.
She was up to her eyeballs in all of that.
Man, I am STILL pissed about that stunt.

Where are you in the great NW Busted? I too thought DeFazio would jump in. He would win! So would Kitzhaber. Now, I just don’t know. I saw on Blue Oregon that Smith’s approval ratings have gone from 58%-40% approve-disapprove in January to 47%-45%. That is promising.

I am quietly working with someone who is going to announce very soon, someone with some name recognition, a sharp progressive mind, and a good person who would serve us well.

Hopefully, Griles was able to borrow some of Scooter’s astronaut diapers for his sentencing.

Griles actually pleaded for an ‘all community service’ punishment.

Where are you in the great NW Busted? I too thought DeFazio would jump in. He would win! So would Kitzhaber. Now, I just don’t know. I saw on Blue Oregon that Smith’s approval ratings have gone from 58%-40% approve-disapprove in January to 47%-45%. That is promising.

I am quietly working with someone who is going to announce very soon, someone with some name recognition, a sharp progressive mind, and a good person who would serve us well.

Unfortunately, I am across the Columbia in Washougal. 20 miles East of Portland.
I grew up on the coast in Oregon, still have relatives there, and would like to eventually move back.
I still keep an eye on Oregon politics, as you see.

RE: hypocrisy on the right.

To most of us, hypocrisy means saying one thing and doing the opposite – ie, lying. Convenience. Saving face. But to the right, it’s more fundamental. Fire and brimstone lectures about the immorality of sex for anything but procreation makes that sex so much more exquisite – you’re risking eternal damnation so damn it’s gonna be good!

Last year, Rep. Henry A. Waxman released the first comprehensive assessment of government contracting under the Bush Administration. The report, entitled Dollars, Not Sense: Government Contracting Under the Bush Administration (link), found that between 2000 and 2005, federal procurement spending rose by over 80%, no-bid and other contracts awarded without full and open competition increased by over 100%, and contract mismanagement led to rising waste, fraud, and abuse in federal procurement.

This new report finds that the worrisome trends identified last year have worsened significantly. For the first time, (1) annual federal procurement spending crossed the $400 billion threshold, (2) more than half of this spending — over $200 billion in new contracts — was awarded without full and open competition, and (3) the total value of wasteful federal contracts now exceeds $1 trillion.

My take: Coulter is profiteering by her serial hate speech and her personal attacks on Edwards. The attack on their grief for their son may have been a few years ago, but it was all part of her pattern.

Edwards as a litigator made a fortune protecting victims from slime like her and the people she spews her acid for.

As a presidential candidate Edwards is looking out for ordinary people in a way the elites of Washington and shrill self-aggrandizing, self-loathing slime like Coulter never would.

I’ve heard about this character who lives in the Congress somewhere, called the Sgt at Arms, who is supposed to enforce some of this stuff, but only on this site. Is he a real person with real power, because, if he is, where the hell is he? Isn’t the proper response when someone doesn’t comply with a subpeona for papers to go in and TAKE them? Isn’t the legal response when someone doesn’t answer a subpeona to testify to arrest them for breaking the law? The DOJ has made it crystal clear that they’re not going to lift a finger for this.

Yes, they go out to sea for 4 years, which is why the fishing off northern CA was essentially shut down in 2006, 4 years after the fish kill. It’s getting better, but it will be a long time before the fish numbers are back to normal.

There’s no way that National Journal reporter could have actually listened and come away calling it a “scream fest”.

One of the reasons I no longer subscribe to the National Journal. It, along with The Economist, go too far to accommodate and assuage the powers that are ruining this country. While a lot of the reporting is level, there are too many instances of biased and unbalanced shots, like the remark here that, for those who aren’t aware of what went on, would characterize Mrs. Edwards as crazed as the hag of the right.

Here in Northern California (easily differentiated by those with a map from the bay area, 300 miles to the south, otherwise known as central California) we have just received more bad news about the Klamath. The warning level is now yellow (not to be confused with the silly terror alert symbols) which means we are about 10 to 15 degrees in water temperature away from another mammoth fish kill such as witnessed in 2002.

Last month, our local Rep, Mike Thompson pushed through a 60-million dollar relief package for north coast fisherman and related businesses, but there is no guarantee it will help. Just north of us in Curry County Oregon, with a much smaller tax base and population, they, at one point, laid of the whole sheriff’s department because Congress couldn’t get timber and fishing relief funds through. Now they will have five full-time Sheriff’s deputies to patrol the roads, the waterways and the mountains, as opposed to the 22 full-time employees they had.

Thanks much for the details. I knew only that it was a nasty situation, but was under the impression that different species preferred different rivers & returned to their “home” river to spawn, had different time-cycles for breeding, etc. etc., but didn’t know the specs.

We’re in OH, about as far as you can get from the problem, and still we remember the brouhaha over diverting the water, KNOWING that there would be a horrible effect on the salmon and so many other living things – seemingly all done to “buy” the votes of the farm lobby. If Dick Cheney doesn’t stand up and say “no” to this, he thinks as much of that baby as he does Klamath River salmon.
