I realize that Chris Matthews having Ann Coulter on his show is something akin to Larry King interviewing Paris Hilton, i.e. red meat for those who slow down to gaze at car wrecks. But the entire event was a complete mutant sideshow from start to finish, and devoting an hour to her noxious bilgewater really challenges the idea that Matthew is a Serious Journalist.
Matthews wonders if Coulter’s criticism of Monica Lewinsky’s legs coursens the public discourse. That this should be his main complaint with what she does is absurd. As Saul Alilnsky noted, “Ridicule is man’s most potent weapon.” It is the ideas that Coulter uses such tactics in the service of (reinforcing vicioius and ugly stereotypes, pounding the poor back into the ground on behalf of the powerful) and the cruel and bigoted depths she will plumb to do so (up to and including the ridiculing of John Edwards’ dead son) that should disqualify her from taking part in any meaningful discussion.
Her eliminationist rhetoric is vile, and she says shockingly ugly and painful things simply to elevate her walking freak show in the public eye and generate book sales and outrageous speaking fees. Nobody is saying, as she claims, that she shouldn’t be allowed to speak (as if she cared about the rights of anybody but her vicious harpy self). But she should be permanently relegated to the hermetically sealed wingnut ghetto where her pestilential nonsense will not be mistaken for rational thought by virtue of the legitimate platform being granted to her.
Having Elizabeth Edwards on to rebut her I’m sure was ratings gold and may well have done some good for the campaign, but I really don’t see what good it did in the long run. As Digby notes, Coulter and her grotesque fan base get off on that kind of confrontation. Look at how awkard, skittish, angry and amped up she is in the clip above. The whole thing just serves to further her weird need to be on the receiving end of acrimonious attention. She’s a black hole of animosity. There is nothing hopeful or positive about her.
For my part, I think Matthews should have asked her what she was thinking wearing a black cocktail dress in the middle of the afternoon on a news show for the ostensible purpose of discussing politics. As TRex has noted, that thing can probably stand up by itself now. I guess she thinks she’s peddling a good dose of sex with her sewage but really it looks more like necrophelia.

Jane!
Hi Jane!
ha
next
Blackout in Manhattan
JANE ROOLZ!!
It was Hillary’s legs, Monica was the chubby Jewish girl under the desk. (this was Coulter’s rap, not mine).
Or coprophagy.
Ann says what Repugs are thinking. It’s up to us to hang her around every Repug neck.
All I’d like to see is the MSM give equal time to Glenn, out hostess, Sirota, etc.
Not gonna happen, so it’s up to DFH’s with internets skillz.
Jane, they wouldn’t mention you so often if you didn’t have them soiling their diapers!
They also had YAF fucks asking her questions at the end.
Spot on! Hope your feeling well, Jane
TRex @ 8
Yuck.
We’re waaaay past shame with this bunch, but this was a new low even for Tweety.
She has no place on a “serious” news program-period.
During his online chat today, someone asked Froomkin if he saw the Coulter confrontation yesterday and his reply was that he hadn’t, but he also tried to avoid watching the car wreck.
MSNBC says 300,000 without power.
I’ve had a change of heart. I want to see Ann Coulter on every program everyday spewing hate on behalf of her party and the Administration. She’s a great advertisement for what not to vote for. Then again, I begin to wonder, if somewhere in there, she’s not counting on that. She’s an act. Something like the Lido. Either way, I want to hear more. Bring it on.
Oops, 137,00, my bad.
There is a big difference between freedom of speech and freedom to make money from speaking.
Ann Coulter can speak. She can write. We just think that she shouldn’t be paid for it.
STTP in Ohio @ 13
Amen.
The little girl behind Ann Coulter IS what stays with me. She was trying to laugh in all of the right places. She’s the reason to push back at this sh*t. She’s watching the adults.
OT, but when I read this, I flashed to Jane and Digby’s Gang of 14 posts.
http://thinkprogress.org/2007/…..struction/
So, what was keeping Dem’s from obstructing 2000 – 2006?
I read somewhere we progressives need Dems to take over government and then we need to take over the Dems.
What the hell – we can multitask!
necrophilia
So … if we hate what the Media does with the Coulterbeast approach to political coverage, let’s make sure we follow Sen Dodd’s suggestion and make our own political coverage – see last thread.
Stop watching HAIRBALL. Kill his ratings and we’ll be rid of the noxious Tweety.
brendan @ 22
Ah, yes. My first marriage. (Sorry. Couldn’t resist.)
It’s Tweety fighting for ratings- “Maybe if we bring a three headed chicken on–can’t find one?- well than how bout Coulter?”
Of course we on the left are not going to convert Coulter’s hard-core fan-base, but I disagree that ignoring her is exactly the wrong policy in regards to everyone else. I’m glad that Mrs. Edwards got in her metaphorical face. Any time a Democrat/progressive gets a chance to face Coulter in a public forum, they should take it, and push back. Hard. Let her go and whine about it afterwards.
I look at it this way. Ann Coulter’s image, is the very image the average mom and dad fundie Republican voter in America’s worst fear is for their daughters. Sexy dresses, too much makeup, slutty looking. She is their embarrassment. I’d like her to be the new Repub mascot. She’s good for the Dems.
STTP in Ohio @ 13
I don’t think shame even enters into it. These sonsabitches (the whole Wurlitzer) know they’re lying to us. They’re playing ‘bread-n-circus’, and gambling enough of us don’t know it yet.
Jane is on fire today.
No way in he** I would have watched Tweetys show yesterday, in fact, I almost never watch him anymore. I did catch the EE asks AnnC to stop spewing hate clip on the net and wrote EE an email thanking her this morning..
Coulter carefully crafts her phrases in order to illicit responses that can be deliberately misconstrued and mocked. Her goal in life is to be inflammatory. She’s a troll — in the real world. And for her efforts an arm of her own publisher “buys” her book in order to give a “Bestseller!” away with each magazine subscription.
What’s worse than someone who would put a three headed chicken on their show to increase ratings? Easy- someone who would BE a three headed chicken in order to sell books.
I watched that clip. Could not believe that Coulter was allowed without rebuke to interrupt Mrs. Edwards, to the extent that no one could hear what Mrs. Edwards said. Unacceptably ill-mannered behavior by anyone. And that dress? Looks as if she really wants to belong into another profession, although I don’t know what her profession really is. How come she is even on TV? Not because of anyone in this forum, I am sure.
You want to really gut Tweety’s show? Find out who the sponsors are, then send them a note telling them why you won’t be buying their products again.
BTW, does anyone here know who publishes Coulter’s books? Guess I won’t be buying any of their tomes.
I wouldn’t know much about what she said this time, except for what was on the video at TPM and C&L. I saw her appearance last year, and also her dust up with Matt Lauer. That was enough for me, so I refused to watch Hardball yesterday. Furthermore, I resent the hell out of Matthews giving her a platform to spew her trash talk. And all this while her own publishers of columns are leaving her left and right (maybe I should make that, right and right.) Not sure if I’m prepared to continue watching Hardball, especially since the host doesn’t seem to know any better than to blurt out on-screen obscenities on a fairly regular basis. Between his potty mouth and his bad judgement, one wonders how he keeps his job, or for how much longer he’ll last. ‘Course, it’s not as if I have virgin ears, and this is an adult oriented show, but he’s been in the business for years and still doesn’t know how to behave. Normally, I like his guests, and sometimes I like the fact that he will call them on their lies, but then I saw a real hardball call on one of Chris Matthew’s favorite guests, Ron Christie, done with the best paunache by David Schuster. Surely he could do that show better than Matthews!
Geoduck @ 27
My comment got lost but you said it better anyway ;) I agree AC needs to be publicly spanked. a lot.
Coulter’s books are published by a neo-nazi organization. They aren’t lookin fer our business.
I hope Fred Thompson or Ghouliani do some photo-ops with Ann Coulter soon. I’ll bet they are dying to have her as their spokesperson. Not.
I could not agree more. I was surprised Elizabeth Edwards would dignify Coulter by even acknowledging her existance.
Really, a potential first lady is not on the same plane as , as , as
Well, that.
The most interesting part of the whole waste of time was the lovely, perky tit that hung just above Coulter’s left shoulder during the entire first segment. And then when they returned the same woman stood just behind her right shoulder. The camera person had to have been aware of it. I wonder if is was a subliminal part of Coulter’s act.
I haven’t laughed this hard in a long time. Not since Jane’s classic, “cheap, rocky coke” line. Excellent.
Stand up??
Not only does it stand up, but all she has to do is whistle and the splattered ‘zoa come to attention and run that damned cocktail dress over to her.
Doubtless showing my cluelessness about heavy metal rock bands [son, forgive me], it seems to me Acid Annie’s prancing around wearing a crucifix is the political equivalent of Gene Simmons joining a praise choir.
Wonder if the smirking girl over Annie’s shoulder realizes how totally Acid was mocking her right along with Lewinski and the other chubby girls…
Brisingamen @ 35
Crown, who also publish Deepak Chopra, Barack Obama and Martha Stewart. Purchased by Random House. Good luck boycotting them.
Glenn Greenwald’s new book, published by Crown, just walked in the door.
LS @ 16
I think the only thing she’s good for is fund-raising, for us! My understanding is that when she uses her degrading, vile mouth against someone, they suddenly get a financial bump in their fund-raising efforts. Edward’s campaign seems to have already seen that bump!
Hey Twisted….
Can you believe all the bile that spews from a Michigan Grad?
It was almost as if she’d had a plan to be taught like a liberal only to use those teachings to become *ugh* Ann Coulter.
Gordon @47: I buy some SF, Fantasy, the occasional mystery and romance. Most of the books I buy come from Tor, DAW, or Baen. The only best-sellers I do are the Harry Potter books.
Jane
Thanks for your posts today. I’m going off topic (okay, OT)
I just called Congressman Emauel’s office to praise him for his well minded and clear action of calling for a vote to cut off funding to the VP’s office. I asked for more actions of clarity of this nature. They received the call graciously and were pleased. I then called all my reps in Ohio and asked that they join with a “yes” vote and support Emanuel’s call for the funding vote of the VP’s office. They all heard my concerns and were receptive, greatly receptive. I suggest we all call Congressman Emanuels’ office in support of his vote.
202-225-4061
A “call” for calling Emanuel coming from you or Christy might getting the phones ringing.
Ann Coulter should go on Jerry Springer’s show! That is where she belongs…
TarheelDem @ 18
As Lincoln said: “Even in a democracy people do not have the right to do wrong.”
Coulter calculates her black dress and her nastiness for shock value, and her market niche is to keep poking that stick into the evil liberal enemies eyes.
And like Rush, keeping those sales up excuses everything — it’s just the entertainment business.
Quoting Jane:
“It is the ideas that Coulter uses such tactics in the service of (reinforcing vicioius and ugly stereotypes, pounding the poor back into the ground on behalf of the powerful) and the cruel and bigoted depths she will plumb to do so (up to and including the ridiculing of John Edwards’ dead son) that should disqualify her from taking part in any meaningful discussion.
But she should be permanently relegated to the hermetically sealed wingnut ghetto where her pestilential nonsense will not be mistaken for rational thought by virtue of the legitimate platform being granted to her.”
That about sums it up for me. Honestly, I do not know how best to fight the venom that is the likes of Coulter, and Rush.
When Kerry tried to ignore the Swiftboaters, he paid dearly for it. I think Elizabeth is showing her spunk by fighting back in the only way she knows how.
Until, the likes of Tweety, and others decline to sink to the level of discourse on a news show that she provides, it will continue.
I think it is about time that some of them had a Don Imus moment.
Enough is enough.
Oh, my, my, my….Schuster is doing Hardball….
Sojourner @ 53
I doubt even Jerry Springer would take her.
Brisingamen @ 51
Tor and Baen seem to be independent, but DAW is Penguin and I thought they had a neanderthal politics imprint, but Wikipedia doesn’t list it. Hmmm.
The trouble with boycotting Random House is that their top line is, well, the top line.
do-si-do @ 37
Tommy Chong?
Edwards is on Tweety, “gotta fight back”.
I wish Edwards would ask tweety why he would give this vile b***h a venue to spew her hate.
“Nobody is saying, as she claims, that she shouldn’t be allowed to speak (as if she cared about the rights of anybody but her vicious harpy self). But she should be permanently relegated to the hermetically sealed wingnut ghetto where her pestilential nonsense will not be mistaken for rational thought by virtue of the legitimate platform being granted to her.”
True dat, Jane. I’ve often wondered why Michael Savage got run off the teevee while Ann Coulter continues vomit-launching her hate bombs without a care. They both come from the same putrid rhetorical neighborhood.
tbsa @ 61
To prevent Repugs from asking the same about Edwards being on.
Anybody know what became of Chris Mathew’s Republican brother who was running for office?
I like Bob Somersby’s Clown Car reference he’s used lately to describe media clowns like Mathews.
Anybody know what became of Chris Mathew’s Republican brother who was running for office?
He lost ; )
GordonM, the last thing I bought from Random House would have been by James Michener — I haven’t purchased anything from them since he died.
Most of the books I buy are small press, like Weiser and for Roberta Gellis, Five Star.
Jackie @ 24
I agree Jackie and I promise after watching Hairball today with John Edwards I promise to stop watching.
Balrog @ 64
Edwards doesn’t go on teevee talking about how he hopes certain people get assisinated or anything similar. Write something like that on this blog even and see what happens. That is so far over the line, it should not be tollerated in a civil society.
You know … I hate Ann Coulter and the vile game she plays and I love when Jane – a truly stylish woman in all the best ways – nails AC for her tacky faux fashion … but I gotta say that I am not happy to see the way AC discussions seem to lead some to think they have permission to shift into neanderthal sexist language … just coz she’s a bitch, does not mean we can stoop to that level.
She’s flipping her hair, in enormous dark glasses, bare legs crossed and recrossed, laughingly sparring as a woman defends herself, her husband and their dead son.
I hate bullies. No one should insult Elizabeth Edwards for standing up for her family.
Politics is tough, but this isn’t politics. It’s a Republican game plan put together years ago to take to the airwaves and humiliate Democrats in any way possible. Hillary’s *ss and legs, calling her Satan, on and on. It has to be challenged and fought.
It’s hour after hour after hour of attack ads. That is why they bought out the media – to stop paying for attack ads.
Does anybody get the irony that Jane spend so much time blogging about Ann today?
How many of you watched Hardball last nite? Arent you just proving her point by watching and blogging about it?

Dam Abrams could ban her from MSNBC. It’s that simple, he hasn’t. Even Olbermann opined awhile back that he wondered why she hadn’t been banned yet
HAIRBALL. Teehee.
Jules @ 42
wow you forget what you write
sounds like me but i don’t remember it
don’t mock her for the cocktail dress. if she wore a suit, people might think Fabio had become anorexic.
Edwards Campaign shifts into third, floored. Got the message, Democrats?
Siun @ 68
True, being a jerk is being a jerk regardless of sex. She is a jerk.
Dick Cheney — Emperor of the Wing Nut Necropolis.
-ck- @ 79
heheheheheh -priceless!
Olbermann commented: “[W]hy she has not been banned from this network, I do not know.” Media Matters has similarly asked, “What would Coulter have to say for the networks to stop promoting her?” and started a petition urging the media to stop providing Coulter and her ilk a platform to launch their venomous attacks.

That Henry is so snarky! He attaches a 4 page Responding to Oversight Committee Document Requests to the end of the letter to Gonzo. Here Alberto, here is how it is done!!
“Ghouls just wanna have fun”
TarheelDem @ 18
Easy — don’t buy it. Eventually — and maybe it’s better for the progressive cause if eventually takes a while — but eventually, those hiring her to speak and those paying for her writing will no longer see a gain from their investment. Luckily, we’re already there.
Maybe the only way we should refer to her is by attaching her name in front of every reference to “the Republican party” or “this administration.”
“Ann Coulter and the Republican party believe…”
“Ann Coulter and this administration wrongly advocate…”
Either way, I’m committed to not getting pulled into the whirlpool-down-the-sink that is Ann Coulter.
Balrog @ 58
LOL
Balrog!
OMG, I just imagined Coulter on the Jerry Springer or Maury Povich shows. I can see the look of horror on her face when she realizes that the usual lineup of dysfunctional guests & a good chunk of the audience are probably her biggest fans.
Never has Coulter been better described. Awesome Jane!

ironranger @ 85
Unfortunately, she’d mock and abuse them and they’d lap it up and ask for more. Think Kevin Bacon in Animal House: “Thank you, Mistress may I have another…”
Why does Chris Matthews want to suck Fred Thompson’s cock?
This is perfectly serious, absolutely legitimate question.
Today? Tweety is trying as hard as he can to redeem himself. His show today is about what a terrible person Coulter is. Yet to be seen whether anyone will call him on enabling Coulter’s vile BS.
Jane Hamsher @ 74
Love and a Hotflash, a classic, followed that day by Bitches’ Brew.
I should cross-stitch a pillow with that: All she needed was a Chesterfield clenched between her teeth and some cheap, rocky coke dangling from her nosehairs to really complete the effect on Meet the Press yesterday.
Heh.
Which is why the proper way to deel with Coulter is through humiliation. Ideally of the absurdist variety.
Buckets of custard. Rubber chickens. If Guy Debord would approve, it’s a good thing.
Let’s go out and Punk Ann Coulter. She’s careful about her media appearances — though she never managed to control Kathy Griffin appearing on Today after her morning-after black dress atrocity. So, the punker will need to be smart.
Rewards will be offered.
From Coulter to Armstrong Williams in 24 hours.
Tweety is scraping the bottom of the barrel.
Here kitty, kitty, kitty
STTP in Ohio @ 93
But do you sense a theme?
I smell payola, don’t you?
Armstrong Williams thought the bumper sticker was real! Brilliant guy.
Hasn’t Anderson Cooper promised never to have her on his show? If only every host and every program would make the same promise. Ann Coulter is only half the problem. Her enablers are the other half.
People shunned Imus when it suddenly dawned on them he was radioactive. I’m not quite sure how advocating the assassination of a presidential candidate and mocking his dead son is qualitatively better than anything Imus said.
I think Elizabeth Edwards’ response to Coulter was genuine, but I also think at this point the Edwards see the fundraising possibilities inherent in Ann Coulter and are taking advantage.
Rayne @ 91
wow, blast from the past – you guys have come a long way since those days…
pseudonymous in nc @ 92
Oh, I like it…I think we put this on the calendar for the week of Halloween, have a contest for the best Ann Coulter-lookalike costume.
Can you see it now, a horde of thirteen-year-olds in scraggy blonde wigs and saggy black cocktail dresses showing up at your door screaming at the top of their lungs, TRICK OR TREAT!!!!
The quintessential contemporary witch.
(My apologies to Wiccans…)
My question: Why this fixation with John Edwards?
I speculate her anti-Edwards venom is set-up work for behind the scenes Party Pros. Ann is their court jester and her antics can derail issue-talk to the approving hoots and howls of dumbies that KNOW Saddam’s WMDs are still pointing at the Creationist Museum.
This subversive RNC mission almost certainly reflects Edwards’ anti-corporate stance. He alone of all the Tier One Dems made money suing corporate interests; he won’t take their contributions; he is the most outspoken about the two-Americas – poverty and wealth.
The Corporate Right does not intend to let him win ANY primary and maybe rev up middle/working class rage at the economic system that is draining them. Edwards is articulate and experienced enough to defend his positions on the merits – so they won’t go there. Big$-GOP uses a vulgar attack harpy to disparage him on national TV – sniggling about his being a girly-man and a publicity hound who sells his family’s drama to attract attention.
Hillary poses no threat to corporate interests, so they could live with her winning. Obama is not a substantial threat to them yet, since there enough racism and religious prejudice in the USA for cover – simply mispronouncing his name is enough to keep that association strong. The rest of the Dems – ha!
It’s always about the money, isn’t it? And Ann is earning her keep. Let’s not get distracted thinking it’s her personal pathology and our nation’s lack of decency – that’s just the top coat.
Siun @ 68
Damn! Just when I was about to shift into neanderthal sexist language…
At Trex’s Lannprey post yesterday, I commented that I had the uncomfortable feeling that Coulter and Matthews were “on script” – that they had discussed beforehand how to maximize Coulter’s potential on the program.
Sparkles the Iguana @ 97
I think it is just fine that they take advantage of the spectacle she brought upon herself. Serves her right – or maybe she somehow intends it to end up that way. I just don’t know about her.
People got outraged and contacted MSNBC and their sponsors. Until people tell Dan Abrams and his money that they will have no part of this, Ann Coulter just puts out CO2 into the space Imus left.
Ann Coulter owns Chris Matthews…
Surely enough of this trash. The rightwing/corporate/repug thugs are dancing with joy as we discuss mathews and his wh*re spewing filth.
Rise above it my bretheren! (Me an atheist too!). Seriously all this talk about this bitch is only furthering their aims. Lets not speak of illegal wars, illegal wire tappig, illegal torture, illegal any bloody thing from these guys let us instead talk of paris bloody hilton and her frivolities. Cheney has been caught with his hand in the till and we talk of britney’s goddamn (no)panties. I despair
The fact that the editors and producers at MSNBC wanted Ann Coulter to be on Chris Matthews just goes to show that they are pulling out any trick possible to keep the debates focused purely on right-wing lunacy..
As opposed to the myriad of other possible discussions on politics and law in America, we instead get to focus on a wife of a presidential candidate pleading with a book writer over the discource of her political attacks. We all lose when news looks like this.
I think the editors and producers at MSNBC would do better working for the National Enquirer. The same goes for Fox and CNN. Even the web sites are filled with celubutard debates.
Rayne @ 91
It might look great on the pillow, but would also likely induce nightmares.
Hmmm . . . Perhaps you do two of them, and send them to Tim Russert and Chris Matthews.
Cheney sent out Coulter.

What I want to know is who ever thought that Chris Matthews was a serious journalist?
David Ehrenstein @ 89
No it isn’t.
To be more precise, the reason I come to this site more than any other is to avoid this kind of conversation. I refuse to put myself on the same level as Coulter.
There is absolutely no reason that we as Dems, Progressives should have to stoop to the queen of coctail dressers vile level.
Elizabeth Edwards showed that plainly.
That said, I’m sure Trex could have said it more eloquently than I, in his daytime voice.
Hugh @ 111
You mean he’s a Journalist??? ;-)
Ron Christie, “I was paid by the Senate” when I worked in the VPs office – the VP is President of the Senate, therefore, he works for the Senate.
Oh goody.
It’s a good thing Fred Phelps doesn’t “sell books” or he too might be given an hour long platform to “add to the political discourse”.
nomolos @ 105
Here’s the problem: without any pushback and pointed commentary from the left condemning her antics as vile and unacceptable on publicly-owned airwaves, she remains legitimized by the sanctioning of corporate media who grants her a megaphone to propel her crap.
We have found that years of taking the high road have negated our presence in the consciousness of the larger American public, and it’s time we fought our way back and stopped being doormats.
What’s necessary now is to find a way that both undercuts her disgusting message while promoting liberals and progressives at the same time; if we had a solid solution built that accomplished this end, we wouldn’t be engaging in this back-and-forth as to whether we should pretend she doesn’t exist or whether we should verbally pommel her back under the rock from whence she crawled.
Next week on Hardball, Charles Manson discusses the race problem in America.

Methinks they really don’t want Edwards to run for president. Now why would that be? Hmm.
I guess the saddest thing really is that no one loves Ann enough to do an intervention. She really doesn’t look well.
Not to mention she’s totally ruined the little black dress for me,damn her.
Sixty Something @ 112
You know what it was that worked yesterday about Elizabeth’s phone call?
She used her mother’s voice, the all-powerful nurturing, protective maternal voice to address the monster.
It was a juxtaposition of real family values in truth against the mockery that wails for family values and cannot deliver them.
Ask the other mothers here if they would do the same thing in Elizabeth’s shoes, if they would summon the power of motherhood to face down some wretched shrew who would pick on their children for their own bitter designs.
I know I would rip the lungs out of Coulter if she ever leveled her gaze in the direction of my children.
Connie Schultz (Sherrod Brown’s wife) and a columnist in her own right is being interviewed on NPR. She is going off again on blogs and says she paid too much attention to them, that they aren’t factual, trade in gossip, nobody reads them, etc.
She overlooks that Brown voted for the Military Commissions Act and that this went through the blogosphere like wildfire and was an important reason he was pulled from the BlueAmerica list and lost support in the blogosphere. I guess that fact got lost in all the gossip.
These people who discount blogs and yet are obviously obsessed by them grate on my last nerve.
Jane’s got fresh thready goodness.
CBC interviewed her in its March/07 (or May/07?)documentary that catalogued the Bush Administration lies that led to the Iraq war and provided the evidence to support calling them “lies”. It was interesting to watch her. She doesn’t seem to be capable of responding to inteligent and sincere questions with like answers. Her attitude came across as, gee thanks for interviewing me and putting me on television, but you’re an idiot and your questions are hardly deserving of anything more than sarcasm and venom.
Rayne @ 124
I AM leveling that gaze.
Just watched the video, and then got out my credit card for a donation to the Edwards campaign.
Could there be a greater contrast between good and evil here? Making fun of their dead son? Makes me physically sick.
Tweety loves him some Cheney “buttboy” Ron Christie……Tweety didn’t learn ANYTHING from the Shuster take down of that queen. Chrisite is just a blatent liar.
Siun @ 68
Coulter and Rove use “stereotype threat” as a tactic. For their right wing supporters, it reinforces their beliefs.
But more important, when it is targeted against their political opponents. The racists attacks against Obama. Voter Caging by Rove. They want us, “the democratic, black, liberal, gay, feminist, and poor” to be distracted by these attacks. Most of all, they want us to descend into the sewer of their hatred.
Cheney DID SEND OUT COULTER
If anyone caught Charlie Rose last night, Gallston from WaPo mentioned on more than one occasion that Shooter watches a ton of television, and only concentrates on political/culture shows. CHENEY SENT OUT COULTER

The bitch is a walking piece of Republican slime. She speaks for the right wing and the GOP. I say let her keep dripping hateful right-wing talking points from her gonorrhea-ridden mouth. that way we can all see who and what she stands for and vote against them in the next election.
win/win/win
Coulter got more books sales, Tweety got better ratings and a lot of discussion, Edwards copped some headlines and will be helped at least a little.
Don’t get any better than that.
June 27, 2007 – Do you remember when candidate George W. Bush berated Al Gore during the 2000 presidential debates for alleged funny business in his fund-raising? Bush said, “You know, going to a Buddhist temple and then claiming it wasn’t a fund-raiser isn’t my view of responsibility.” It was a direct attack on the honor of a fellow Southerner, and Gore wasn’t taking it. “You have attacked my honor and integrity,” the vice president shot back. “I think it’s time to teach you a few old-fashioned lessons about character. When I enlisted to fight in the Vietnam War, you were talkin’ real tough about Vietnam. But when you got the call, you called your daddy and begged him to pull some strings so you wouldn’t have to go to war. So instead of defending your country with honor, you put some poor Texas millworker’s kid on the front line in your place to get shot at. Where I come from, we call that a coward.

“When I was working hard, raising my family, you were busy drinking yourself and your family into the ground. Why don’t you tell us how many times you got behind the wheel of a car with a few drinks under your belt? Where I come from, we call that a drunk.
“When I was serving in the U.S. Senate, your own father’s government had to investigate you on the charge that you’d swindled a bunch of old people out of their life savings by using insider knowledge to sell off stocks you knew were about to drop. Where I come from, we call that crooked. So governor, don’t you ever lecture me about character. And don’t you ever talk to me that way again in front of my family or my fellow citizens.”
Don’t remember that reply? There’s a reason: Gore never said anything like it. Challenged by Bush on the temple fundraiser, he instead sidestepped the attack with a lofty but wimpy declaration about wanting “to spend my time making this country even better than it is, not trying to make you out to be a bad person.” The response-that-wasn’t-but-should-have-been is the work of psychology researcher Drew Westen of Emory University, one of many “what ifs” in his new book, “The Political Brain: The Role of Emotion in Deciding the Fate of the Nation.” After reading them you won’t be surprised that Westen has been approached by the campaigns of “several” Democratic hopefuls (he is too discrete to say which) for advice on how to make use of findings about how the brain operates in the political arena. Why aren’t Republicans beating a path to his door? Because the GOP has already mastered the dark art of psych-ops—of pushing the right buttons in people’s brains to win their vote.

Its coprophagia.
I am coming very late to this discussion, but Ann Coulter makes me want to vomit. What planet does she live on?
If you watched that Coulter clip, you can detox with this clip of Kathy Griffin shreading Coulter on the Today Show.

Great picture: I’m glad I followed the link.
But Fred Thompson is the Phillip Morris candidate.
On August 25. 2007, I blogged about Ann Coulter in The very definition of crazy. Here’s the excerpt:
Ms. Coulter is the Daffy Duck of political discourse. When she speaks, you shake your head and wonder if you really heard what you thought you heard. Then when someone on Faux News comes on and says, “we must fight the terrorists in Iraq, so we don’t fight them here,” it sounds like the voice of sweet reason. Compared to daffy Ann Coulter, it is so much easier to accept the talking head, who in this analogy might be compared to, say, Orson Wells’ War of the Worlds.
Why the War of the Worlds? Because some people believe it and do batshit crazy stuff.
Today, on Chris Matthews’ Hardball we see the proof of what I was saying.
Armstrong Williams was talking about Ann Coulter’s appearance yesterday on his show. For those who missed it, she was confronted by Elizabeth Edwards, who gently rebuked her for hateful speech. Ms. Coulter had alleged that John Edwards has a bumper sticker which says, “Ask me about my dead son.” As the mother of that deceased boy, Mrs. Edwards found it offensive.
Armstrong Williams, for those who missed it, used to be on the White House’s payroll as a propagandist, which is criminal. Chris Matthews asked Williams if thought it was “over the line” to attack the Edwards for having a bumper sticker that says, “Ask me about my dead boy.” Armstrong said, “no.” Why? Because he believed the Edwards actually had such a bumper sticker.
That was my point when I said, “some people believe it and do batshit crazy stuff.” For those who missed it.

At some point it becomes cruel to keep bringing up Monica in any text.
Good column, Jane. You failed to name her personality disorder. She is a narcissistic personality disordered soul, who thrives on attention. Boy, she’s figured out how to get attention, and Matthews fed her well yesterday.

oh, I get it… the “black” cocktail dress is really just a smeared on tarry black stool a-la a bad GI bleed. no wonder she resonates so much with the right.
I quit watching ‘Wittle Chwissy’ after he spent a whole week trying to figure out whether Bill and Hillary were still “doing it”. He doesn’t need to do tabloid stories about young Hollywood or dead models….He is the tabloid story and should join Joe Scro and become co-host for Entertainment Tonight.
Chris Matthews and MSNBC set up this whole controversy for ratings. Matthews is as much a narcissist as Coulter. He wants to be reckoned with as the determiner of who gets to run in politics. He’s pathetic. And Hardball’s ratings as of Monday, June 25th, were 397,000. So, as I was saying, manufacturing and staging an event!
