I think there are people here who don’t know of the Pinto, one of Detroit’s exploding vehicles made by the Ford Motor Company. I think the first one came out in 1972?

The thought of these people wanting to kill a terminally ill person before nature – or God – takes over is beyond bizarre. I remember reading somewhere that in the opening day of Battle of the Somme, July 1, 1916, there were at times thousands of already fatally wounded soldiers killing other soldiers before expiring. One British soldier, grievously wounded, but alive, made it back to the lines after fighting all day. He had left his unit – they were all dead – so was hastily tried for cowardice and shot before he could die naturally of his wounds.

The Pinto, along with the Yugo, AMC Gremlin, Chevrolet Vega, Chevrolet Chevette and AMC Pacer, suffers the reputation of being an American symbol for a “cheap economy car” or “cheapness”. But in particular, its peculiar vulnerability to rear end collisions and fire has given it a special place in popular culture.

In the movie Cujo, the mother and son took up protection in a Ford Pinto to escape the dog.

The car is referenced by name in the song Pretty Fly For A White Guy by The Offspring. It is also referenced in Everclear’s song “AM Radio”.

During a chase scene in the film Top Secret!, a vehicle being driven by East German guards is forced to brake sharply upon seeing a Ford Pinto stopped in the road ahead of it. It just barely touches the rear of the car causing it to slowly roll forward a few feet and explode violently in reference to the safety problems which plagued the Pinto.

Dr. Gonzo and Raoul Duke drive a Pinto in Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas.

In the movie Speed, Sandra Bullock’s character, when asked if she could handle driving a bus rigged with explosives, says, “Oh sure, it’s just like driving a really big Pinto.”

I learned to drive on Ramblers (pre-Hormet/Gremlin et al). For whatever reason, my folks liked ‘em. At one time we had a ‘63, ‘64, and a ‘67.

Not bad cars but not what cha call yer shining lights of Dee-troit engineering either…
