raven, the Top Secret pinto scene was even funnier. The Nazi vehicle was forced off a dirt road by some action by our heroic U.S. pop star. Just as the driver is regaining control of the vehicle, we see a Pinto just sitting out in the middle of the field in front of the Nazis. The driver recoils in horror and slams on the brakes and brings the vehicle to a stop, but just touches the Pinto to a ‘ding’ on the soundtrack followed by a second of silence and then a massive explosion, killing all the Nazis. Obviously a Zucker Brother’s film…

…and there was much rejoicing! yay.

Raven @ 71, don’t forget the Hornet! I had the pleasure *ahem* of driving a 1970’s vintage AMC Hornet ’sportwagon’ for a few years. It was well on the way to rusting out.

Ha! They were awesome.

then there was the Hudson Hornet. i saw one of them in a car repair shop lot in McMinnville, Oregon last year …….

I think there are people here who don’t know of the Pinto, one of Detroit’s exploding vehicles made by the Ford Motor Company. I think the first one came out in 1972?

We have a budget ‘crisis’ here in IL too. We have a dem gov, but he has the fiscal restraint of Marion Jones…which, for those of you who don’t get it…that means absolutely none. I don’t blame him totally, though. He’s just trying to get his after a 20 year run of exclusive republican cronyism and corporate patronage. Hmmm, sound familiar?

The governor of Michigan Is not a male!

What’s your point? I think I’m lost…

Oklahoma is going to execute and man with advanced, metastatic lung cancer, at 6 PM today.

All is can say is thank god all those Librul judges have been purged. This may be W’s worst legacy.

The thought of these people wanting to kill a terminally ill person before nature - or God - takes over is beyond bizarre. I remember reading somewhere that in the opening day of Battle of the Somme, July 1, 1916, there were at times thousands of already fatally wounded soldiers killing other soldiers before expiring. One British soldier, grievously wounded, but alive, made it back to the lines after fighting all day. He had left his unit - they were all dead - so was hastily tried for cowardice and shot before he could die naturally of his wounds.

raven @ 71

The Pinto, along with the Yugo, AMC Gremlin, Chevrolet Vega, Chevrolet Chevette and AMC Pacer, suffers the reputation of being an American symbol for a “cheap economy car” or “cheapness”. But in particular, its peculiar vulnerability to rear end collisions and fire has given it a special place in popular culture.

In the movie Cujo, the mother and son took up protection in a Ford Pinto to escape the dog.

The car is referenced by name in the song Pretty Fly For A White Guy by The Offspring. It is also referenced in Everclear’s song “AM Radio”.

During a chase scene in the film Top Secret!, a vehicle being driven by East German guards is forced to brake sharply upon seeing a Ford Pinto stopped in the road ahead of it. It just barely touches the rear of the car causing it to slowly roll forward a few feet and explode violently in reference to the safety problems which plagued the Pinto.

Dr. Gonzo and Raoul Duke drive a Pinto in Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas.

In the movie Speed, Sandra Bullock’s character, when asked if she could handle driving a bus rigged with explosives, says, “Oh sure, it’s just like driving a really big Pinto.”

In the pen and paper Roleplaying Game Unknown Armies the example given of a Merchant Avatar’s ability to make someone beleive there is worth where none exists is “C’mon man, it’s a Pinto! That name just screams manliness!”

On a Season 9 episode of Mad TV, a mock up 1970s episode of The Price Is Right gives away a brown Pinto as a prize which blows up after the winning contestant starts it.

OMFG!!!!

I think I woke the sleeping giant!

It’s o.k. Just don’t mention Monty Python…oh sh*t!
