A bit of potential hallelujah news from Howie:
The Associated Press has a story out on the wires today that bodes ill for Doolittle, very ill. Many have suspected that Abramoff has been supplying federal investigators with information about his former congressional crony Doolittle. And the involvement in the case of the Abramoff-Doolittle go-between, another GOP criminal, Kevin Ring, seemed to seal the fates of both Doolittle and his moll/wife, Julie. Their home and offices were raided by the FBI and evidence was hauled away.
But today’s news involves yet another top Doolittle staffer, David Lopez, turning on his former boss. Lopez is cooperating with the FBI as they build a devastating case against Doolittle. Lopez was Doolittle’s chief of staff until 2005– and then his campaign consultant until last year when the roof began collapsing– and according to his attorney, he has provided the FBI with “several hundred pages of campaign finance records… under subpoena.”
I just love the sound of the words “under subpoena” and “Doolittle” in the same sentence. BooYah!
In case you were wondering, yes, Charlie Brown has already announced his candidacy for the seat. Here’s his Blue America chat with us from February. You can contribute to his campaign here.

Awesome. The gift that just keeps on giving. How about the 750,000 documents in the Abramoff case nobody gets to see? Hope they nail Delay down the line too. Also, I love that 5 of the fired USAs were senior committee members on the Indian affairs committee.
See ya Doo little.
I just saw this news at TPM while I was surfing.
I knew Charlie Brown in school. Nice guy.
I am amazed with Rove running the DOJ and the ongoing obstruction of justice that any of these cases are allowed to move forward.
What has Doolittle or Ted Stevens done to piss off Rove?
More good news regarding Conrad Black (and Richard Pearle). Fitz!

KINDA Off-Topic:
Alberto Gonzales will be in Boise, Idaho this afternoon. He will be appearing at the Senior Citizen, which just happens to be next door to my place of employment.
I still don’t understand how Griles got to plead without an obligation to cooperate. Hopefully, the Woman Scorned in her cooperation brings some further information forward that Griles has kept out of the public eye and they can realy nail hus a**. Along with his former boss and her boss, and Delay, and Lewis, and Doolittle and all the rest of the Retug wise-guys.
EPU’d from downstairs (sorry if OT):

What is bothering me a bit is the feeling that Cheney is being set up (deservedly) to carry all the sins of this administration, so that when he disappears under the bus, all that is ugly disappears too. But where is Karl in all this? My feeling is that he is behind much of the current feeding frenzy on Cheney’s rancid body.
IntelVet at 5 — He’s great. And he came so close in the last election cycle against Doolittle’s machine…this time around, we are starting early for Charlie. He’d be a wonderful member of Congress.
I need a flow chart to keep up with who is being investigated for what. How far along are the various investigations and most importantly how many Republican politicans are being investigated in states where a Democrat govenor can replace them with a Democrat? I am really interested in potiential pickups in the Senate. Also Karl can count despite his “math”. What do you wanna bet that he is leaning on the Justice Dept to go slow or tank investigations into Republican Senators? If he loses enough Senators he loses his filibuster so I would expect him to be very concerned about that. Forget the lost Emails I want the recent ones to the Justice Dept. Also does anyone have any idea how Karl is talking now? Has he set up another account or what? Last I checked all the GOP talking heads on the Main Stream Media all seem to be talking with the EXACT SAME TALKING POINTS. There is noway Karl would be ussing the White House email system because another bunch of cough lost emails” would be hard to explain. How can we find out?
Steve @ 6
Yeah, Imagine what we could have learned about the extent of Abramoff’s corruption and his connection to Cheney had the DOJ not been rigged. Perhaps I am hopeful, but I like to think that some of the prosecutions will continue because there is a little oversight from Waxman, Conyers, Leahy, et. al.
Rats never swim toward a sinking ship, do they?
Sounds like another USAtty gonna hafta find new job…

The menu on Woody Guthrie’s Guitar today includes Marilyn Manson, an amazing Kurt Weill cover, Traffic, Richard Thompson, the Byrds, P,P&M, plus a couple of (funny)outliers.

Over on The Pond, there’s a story about news outlets–a newspaper in Lincoln, NE, and a Fox TV station in Omaha–who hve fired folks for donating to political campaigns. It’s just a coincidence that the donations were to Democrats.

Then, fyeieio, on the Lamb, there’s a story of the latest success in Afghanistan: the record heroin poppy harvest. Yahooooo!

Terry at 14 — Not in my experience in watching members of a conspiracy turn on each other, time and time again. Pretty much no.
I asked down below, but too late for answers:
Having called my senator’s (Schumer’s) DC office directly, is there any point in calling his local NYC office as well?
Wordsmith @ 8
Are you attending? If so, please keep us posted!
LS @ 7
That’s a cryin’ shame, ain’t it?
Harriet at 17 — Just left you a response in the other thread. :)
Sometime in the mid-90s, some clever person, I forget who, wrote that the Republicans in Congress were the party of Doolittle, Hyde, Barr, and Delay. I thought that was pretty funny.
Better yet, only Doolittle is remaining, and he’s about to go.
Hmmm….so Gonzales is coming here to show that the administration has support. Not to be believed, of course.
Rats have a penchant for lying, while others don’t.
This has been kept very, very low-key. But not near enough.
Spurious @ 10 – I agree this Cheney tell all is a setup. Guessing Cheney will resign due to health reasons soon & Rove will install the next VP (Condi? Thompson?) heir to the White House.
I haven’t been around at all today and sorry to have missed some posts but I have a suggestion that leahey needs to consider when they de fund the vice president;
you know how you can re coup funding that was not made properly?…for instance welfare will get the money back they payed if they find you were being payed under circumstances that didn’t fit protocol
I think once they get the vice president’s office defunded they should go after back funding as well
perris @ 24
Good idea!

I’m going in to work a bit early so I can saunter on down later…like on break or lunch. I work directly next door to the Ft. I’m taking my camera, binoculars, poisoned darts*, snacks….and I can stand in the cafeteria on the 4th floor and see wonderfully as well.

I am with you there, those documents would be incredible to see. What would be even more devastating to the goopers are copies of deleted white house emails that individuals have kept of insurance in case they were subject of an investigation.

Loved it when he stepped up @ Feingold’s censure hearing, too.
Too bad this just gets lost in the fog of Gonzo at the DOJ. I’m not holding my breath. When this story broke, they said there were 60 or so Repugs involved. What happened?

Any nominee made HAS to be approved by both the House and Senate. I rather doubt that the Dems in charge (or the Repubs like McCain, Tancredo, Brownback, et al) will just rubber stamp a Condi or Freddie to move into the WH as an heir apparent for ‘08.
My best speculative guess is that someone like an Alan Simpson who would be forced to promise NOT to be a candidate in ‘08.
Steve @28 I couldn’t get your links to work.
The GOP is the “family values” party? Lets examine their front runner Rudy.
1.Bernie Kerik
2.Giuliani’s South Carolina chairman, state Treasurer Thomas Ravenel, was indicted on federal cocaine charges last week and stepped down from Giuliani’s campaign.
3.Victims’ advocates called on Giuliani to fire Monsignor Alan Placa, a Catholic priest suspended from the church over abuse allegations, from Giuliani’s security consulting firm. A Giuliani spokeswoman said last week that the company has no plans to fire Placa, a childhood friend of Giuliani’s.

I’ve been waiting for a Doolittle indictment for a while, and then there’s Renzi, Jerry Lewis, and Duncan Hunter.

for starters! ;)
As I said earlier what can one expect from the doyenne of the inside the beltway cocktail weenie circuit.
Wordsmith, I didn’t know the evil little Chipmunk was coming to town. Looking for a safe haven, eh?
I see that Grant and Hansen have called for his resignation.
Keep us posted on what he does.
From Sally Q The idea is to install a vice president who could beat the Democratic nominee in 2008. It’s unlikely that any of the top three Republican candidates — former New York Mayor Rudolph Giuliani, Sen. John McCain of Arizona or former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney — would want the job, for fear that association with Bush’s war would be the kiss of death.
What install? This would have to go through the Dem Senate would it not? What was the process when Spiro T was axed?
Taking down one Republican at a time. Might have to let some federal cons out on early release to accommodate the influx of Republican crooks, shysters and traitors.
Hugh @ 40
All deserve an indictment, but I will jump for joy if/when Hunter gets put down. What an arrogant, condescending, know-it-all he is! And, he thinks that the louder he talks, the more people will listen. Not.
nomolos at 45 — Well, clearly, Sally thinks that the rules are for little people…
Hi. I had posted this in the last thread just as it closed so if it seems slightly off topic please bear with me.
My question is if OVP is not granted executive authority under the Constitution, then doesn’t his empowerment at the discretion of an individual President transform him into “other public Ministers and Consuls” as described in Article II, Section 2?
Not that he is no longer the VP, just that he is being empowered with an additional office.
Note that this would also place that potential delegation of what is essentially Cabinet level authority to being subject to Senate confirmation.
Any thoughts?
Hugh @ 40
Oooohh. Duncan Hunter. He’s the one I want to see behind bars.
Someone once told me Fitz is never OT at FDL:
I look at the Republican line-up for ‘08 and the only thing I see missing is Joe Lieberman.
Does anyone think that Blackwater may well be the shock troops of the Republican Party? Everyone knows that there are countless operative i.e. Tim Griffin, that are willing to orchestrate mayhem and mischief throughout the land. Is it so far fetched to think that when their world really becomes decimated by federal indictments and prison sentences that the storm troopers will be turned loose to take care of their political opponents once and for all. After all for Republicans it’s all about the power.
whoops. i posted this comment on the wrong thead…
i’m just getting set up to listen to this afternoon’s house judiciary committee hearing…. and i see one of my heros, Lt. Commander Charlie Swift, is listed as a witness.
one thing that’s got me a bit worried, is that there is no webcast link up yet (c-span is covering another hearing, so committee webcast is where the action will be).
i called the committee receptionist, who assured me there would be a webcast (”all our hearings are webcast”)… so fingers crossed. i’d like a litte inspiration from charlie swift today!
here are all the witnesses listed:
selise at 54 — Was just looking for that as well onthe webcast. Thanks much! (My in-laws are visiting us for the next few weeks, and I’m all discombobulated today…much appreciated on the heads up.)

Re: Giuliani and “family values”:
Rudy is so estranged from his two kids that (1) Caroline (the daughter) never told daddy when she got into Harvard, and (2) They’ve both dropped his last name.
Biodun at 57 — That really is very sad for the kids. I’ve been in the middle of some messy divorce and custody spats with clients way, way back when I was still doing domestic work – and I always felt so horrible for the kids caught in the middle of the messes. To have to deal with it all on such a public stage? Really awful for them.
Christy Hardin Smith @ 55
Wow. That’s scary. ;o)
I’m worried that this latest revelation re Doolittle is less than it appears. According to David Whitney’s front page story in the Sacramento Bee, these records were turned over by Lopez last year. I wish I had more hope that something good was about to happen but this seems to be taking too long. I think Donothing covered his tracks too well.
Even though I live .25 miles outside of CA-4, I will be working hard for Charlie in ‘08.
Arianna has a little interesting thing on Senator Clinton.

Speaking of Tim Griffin, TPMmuckraker has an analysis of the voting spreadsheet for Duval Co, FL that was provided to Greg Palast. Seems to be an extremely small chance of accidents happening. Timmy’s got some ’splainin’ to do!

Mack at 62 – Amen on that one. It was the rare case where the parents put the kids’ needs first. The fact that I can recall each one individually says a lot in terms of what I saw in the others.
TPM Muckraker investigated and confirmed the Greg Palast reports that finger Tim Griffin in the vote caging conspiracy.
I posted the following comment:
===========
The caging list tactic is just the tip of the iceberg, in the ongoing GOP criminal conspiracy to supress the minority vote. The 1982 DNC v RNC consent decree also covered the GOP Ballot Security Task Force (BSTF) tactic. This is discussed in depth by Rachel E. Berry, Democratic National Committee v. Edward J. Rollins: Politics as Usual or Unusual Politics?
This is excerpted and linked in my piece, The Texas Blueprint for the Stolen Election —
http://democrats.com/blueprint
The criminal conspiracy to steal the 2000 election in Florida was launched no later than the summer of 1998, with George W Bush, Karl Rove, Jeb Bush, and Tom Feeney as principal co-conspirators.
===========
Now, if we can get some of the co-conspriators in that scandal to flip, impeachment might not be a dead letter . . .
Christy Hardin Smith @ 55
just called the committee number back again… and this time i was put on hold so he could find out what the scoop is. sadly, there will be no webcast. :(
i requested that a msg be left for whoever takes care of the webcasting… i know for a fact that there are alot of fans of the house judiciary committee webcasts, especially on such important topics as habeas corpus and gitmo. please, please get the equipment to be able to webcast from whatever room is used… otherwise only people who go to the hearings can listen to what is said.
he was surprised to be told that c-span wasn’t showing the hearing live.
seemed like a nice guy… i hope he does leave my message with someone who can do something for future webcasts.
sigh.
Waaaaaaaaaa….where’s the hearing??? Waaaaaaaaa..
-ck- @ 67
Please, please, please…make this happen…
Bluetoe #53,
Not far-fetched at all, but IMO, won’t happen anytime soon. Thre’s just not any kind of general uprising among the population that would call for that kind of response, and I doubt we’re going to see that many prosecutions to begin with. Not that they aren’t deserved-just that the clock is ticking. Even though Bush’s polls are in the tank, most people I talk to just think he’s a bad President-the degree of criminality involved is missed, except by those paying close attention.
RJH has been writing about Blackwater lately at her site here.

exactly. another fake war to justfy huge militarized budgets that provide corporate welfare to their friends…. and justify bases, and military intervention all over the world. blegh.
OKk #83,
Yes. We also deserve better than a lot of what the Democrats offer. Even though the Dems are better than the Repubs at this point in time, they are also so shot through with corruption and corporatist attitudes that at times it is difficult to tell them apart. The last 6 years have been an exception to this, only because Bushco is SO BAD. IMO, the party/candidate to really fix this mess has not yet appeared, and shows no signs of coming-and if he/she did, they would instantly be denounced as a Libertarian Socialist. Closer to the truth would be a true Social Democratic Party. Absent that, the best we can hope for is to stop digging the hole we’re in any deeper.
IMO.
Re: Rudy:
From wiki:
In May 2000, the New York Daily News broke news of Giuliani’s extramarital relationship with Judith Nathan, a sales manager for a pharmaceutical company. Giuliani then called a press conference to announce that he intended to separate from Hanover.[215][216][217] Hanover, however, had not been told about his plans before his press conference[218], an omission for which Giuliani was widely criticized.[219] Previously, Giuliani had hinted at the relationship by referring to Nathan as his “very good friend.” Giuliani now went on to praise Nathan as a “very, very fine woman”, and said about his marriage with Hanover, that “over the course of some period of time in many ways, we’ve grown to live independent and separate lives.” Hours later Hanover said, “I had hoped that we could keep this marriage together. For several years, it was difficult to participate in Rudy’s public life because of his relationship with one staff member,” a reference to Lategano. Giuliani, Hanover and Nathan appeared on the cover of People magazine in the aftermath.[220]

“Quartet”? Will Tony be playing ’second fiddle’ again?
AP – Outgoing British Prime Minister Tony Blair will be named on Wednesday as special envoy for the international diplomatic Quartet on the Middle East with a portfolio focused on Palestinian economic and political reform, a senior U.S. official said.
It’s all so aggravating.
I understand that the war on drugs is a retarded excuse to build up the military industrial complex and spread imperialism, but lets be honest. Cutting off funding for the “enemy” is basic strategy. Poppy production funds the Talaban and Al Qaida. There was a point at which poppy production could have been mitigated through economic incentive (lets remember drugs are forbidden in islam, which would have been a huge incentive to generate an alternative income for a lot of those farmers). If the Bush administration had even tried to reduce the drug trade, there could have been a good result. I guess I expect our foreign policy people to be practical.
perris @ 106
The thing is, if they try to impeach, but can’t get the votes, it makes the Dems look weak. The Repubs will have to really get on board with it to be sure it is successful, otherwise it is not productive.
From the Raw Story story on Kissinger:LINK
Somewhat OT:
I don’t get it. The Wapo is exposing Cheney(hooo, perish the thought). That’s against nature for this Neocon haven. My question is wich Neocon decided that Cheney was leaving??? Could Daddy Bush have decided to save what’s left of the Bush Legacy? Who’s behind this Cheney fracas?

Interesting item near the end of Froomkin’s column:
Not surprising the WH would “overlook” Kissinger’s client list. George probably knew who was on the list. Kissinger probably would have headed the 9/11 panel off into the deep swamp.
Speaking of phones humming… it seems to take forever for the operator to pick up the phone–and senator lugar’s voice mailbox is FULL! (I take this as a good sign because it’s hard to believe all that many people would call to encourage the suspension of habeas corpus.)

Thanks for the link. I don’t think Blackwater would be in tanks and trucks rolling down Main Street but more along the lines of special ops that target dissents or pols that the right wing fears and detests. After all, these folks are mercennairies. For some it’s just another job. The right wing is definitely in decline but don’t think they will go down without a fight. Does anyone doubt that the Republican Party is not willing to play dirty? Whatever it takes?
Remember the recent Bandar Bush story about bribes and Cheney and Bush and the Brits, and the fact that there is an ongoing investigation about all this right now….
From Rawstory:
“At the time he was hemming and hawing over the book deal, Tenet received the Presidential Medal of Freedom, Tyler notes, but Tenet insists that’s simply a coincidence.
Tenet wasn’t “clear on what conversations he’d had with members of the Bush family during the 18-month interval between actions,” the article notes.
Former Saudi ambassador Prince Bandar also hyped speculation of a Bush intervention in the publication delay.
“I knew President Bush called him,” Bandar, a close friend of Tenet, told Tyler. “The question is: Was it 41 or 43?”
Why is Bandar throwing the Bush’s and Tenet under the bus?? Bandar knows everything related to the run up to…well…everything.

> I need a flow chart to keep up with who is being investigated for what.
That would be nice.
The Rove/Gonzales machine telegraphed exactly which investigations they’re most afraid of by firing Carol Lam. They wouldn’t take this risk, IMHO, unless she was pursuing threads that lead to the White House.
So what I would really like to see is a tree diagram or flow chart of where Lam’s investigation was leading — who was implicated and under investigation, and for what, when she had to leave.
I wish I had the knowledge and resources to do this myself, but alas.
