Every so often, somebody sends me an e-mail or posts a comment online to tell me how brave I am.
But I’m not, not really.
The following four young men and women? Now they are brave. Unbelievably so. Brave and kind and generous and caring.
I’m astonished at how each of them has managed, while most of them are just out of their teens (and one of them still is a teen), to face down troubles and challenges and out-and-out evil that would kill a battalion of lesser folk. I am humbled by their inner strength. When I feel depressed about things, I think of them — and suddenly my life and what I thought were “problems” is snapped abruptly back into perspective.
They’re this year’s winners of the Colin Higgins Youth Courage Awards. Here are their stories:
ALI ABBAS, 19
Born and raised in rural Illinois, the son of Muslim, Lebanese parents, experienced anti-Arab harassment throughout his childhood, which intensified after 9/11. When Ali came out his senior year, he was rejected by his friends and came under the scrutiny of his parents. He quickly forgave all for hurting him, even his parents, knowing their backgrounds of having suffered prejudice first hand. Ali now works to put himself through DePaul University, where he is involved in Students for Justice in Palestine, in coalition with Students of Islam, Feminists in Action and the campus LGBT organization. His goal is to increase acceptance of LGBTQ youth of color and Middle Eastern descent in the mainstream community, as well as carry a gay liberation movement to the Middle East, so that all communities “are accepting of racial and gender diversity.”RYAN BOWKER, 20
Ryan grew up on a Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe reservation in South Dakota and was raised by his grandfather. At age nine, Ryan came out to his sisters and to his homophobic community at age twelve. His grandfather shunned him and put him into counseling “to make him straight.” At the age of 15, Ryan began being shuttled between foster and group homes. Determined to preserve, he graduated a year and a half early from high school and moved to Rapid City where he obtained a nursing certificate. But even at the nursing home at which he works, he still experiences homophobia, mainly because of his appearance. He volunteers at the local LGBTQ center and conducts outreach to Native American reservations and schools in an effort to educate youth about the traditional cultural ways, which accepted and honored “Two Spirit” people. His goal is to become a Registered Nurse and return to his reservation to help do HIV prevention and counseling, hoping this program will be replicated in reservations across the country.KIYA (Mack) MORTON, 20
Born a biological male child to teenage parents in urban Philadelphia, was beaten and emotionally abused by older relatives throughout her childhood. Her mother found out she was gay and sent Kiya to a mental institution, which drugged her to make her straight. After several attempts to escape, she ran away for good and at the age of 15 began life as a sex worker, while transitioning to become a girl. Arrested for prostitution, she was placed in a series of group homes, forced back to being a boy, and finally sent to a juvenile detention center, where she was physically and sexually assaulted by the prison staff. She finally escaped the system by claiming she was suicidal. Once out, she protested to the state’s Commissioner of Juvenile Justice about the treatment of transgenders in the state foster care and prisons. Due in part to her efforts, that specific juvenile detention center was shut down and the state incorporated new guidelines for the treatment of all LGBT in state care. Kiya continues to be a tireless advocate for these rights and hopes through study to become a professional photographer.RAQUEL EVITA SARASWETI, 23
Born and raised in poverty in New York by a single parent, experienced sexual and physical violence as a child, and later, in her teens, because of her perceived sexuality. After 9/11, she became the target of severe anti-Arab harassment. At the age of 15, she became a member of the national board of directors of GLSEN. In the eighth grade, she received a scholarship to a boarding school, which provided a path to college. At Simmons College, because she was the president off both the campus LGBTQ and Muslim student organizations, she began receiving death threats after her name appeared on an international hit list, released out of Syria, of “16 Women who Shame Islam.” Undeterred, she became active in Project Ijtihad, an international organization working to restore Islam’s tradition of critical thinking, an to reinterpret (not rewrite) the Qu’an with a human-rights lens. Fluent in several languages, she uses a variety of artistic mediums, from dance, to spoken word and photography to express her experiences as a mixed-race, reform-minded Muslim and to instigate positive change.
Now THAT’s what I call bravery, folks.

No matter how badly we may think we have things, there are ALWAYS those who have a far more difficult life yet manage to not only survive but somehow to thrive.
Blessings to all of these inidividuals.
I can’t believe people still treat them so badly.
The problem under the anti-gay discrimination is child abuse. That is a huge problem.
You know what? This is great! Isn’t life grand! Out of the muck and mud of life, rise the lotus flowers!! These are wonderful stories. Thank you!
I want to also mention our Snarkessandra!!! (sp?)
It gives me courage to hear these stories. I have no great life-problem matching these stories, but I lose heart with the current state of the State. I need to hear about others, of whatever persuasion, fighting on.
It keeps me going.
I’m in awe of these amazing young people. And suddenly I have a much greater sense of hope for the future.
LS @ 6
Thanks!
I just wish everyone who was abused and molested, like the 4 award winners on the link, could all turn it towards making a difference. I hope they also have counseling.
Wow. Just Wow. Great post.
This is my friends son Kade
Not only does Kade have a tremendous amount of courage and humor, his folks have been wonderful in supporting him.
SnarKassandra @ 9
Sorry about the misspelling…:(
Hello, everyone!
Hi Phoenix!
raven @ 11
Thanks, Raven!
LS I spell it the way I do because my name is Cassandra with an A.
SnarKassandra;
I think you & your website are both great. I told 2 12 yr old girls who are interested in current events (wish I could say the same of a lot of adults) to visit it. I hope they have. You & your young friends help me stay hopeful about the future.
I remember when you said awhile ago something about bossy boys wanting to do things their way on the site & I burst out laughing. It’s good that you are getting practice dealing with that now because some boys, no matter how old, still like to be bossy.
Phoenix Woman @ 13
HELLO GREAT BIRD OF RESURECTION!
guess what?
republicans are starting to “get brave” against this kabal too
from think progress
ya, it’s time we dealt some cards to the republicans that are starting to understand they will be meaningless unless they get rid of the kabal
they WILL deal and we CAN’T wait for the elections, the traitors in the white house have to be brought to the bar of justice
There is an extraordinary young man who just graduated school in Johnson City, Texas. His name is Johnny Solis III. He was Valedictorian. He is consumed by politics. He want to be president, and I believe he will be a “contender”. The son of immigrants. He won tons of scholarships at graduation, and he will be attending Georgetown University. I know him personally. He took us to the Obama thingy in Austin, and he is pretty devoted to Obama right now. Young people like this deserve our admiration. What a great guy.
Phoenix Woman @ 13
Hi, Ma’am! Powerful post, it further instills hope in our Youth, leading us forward, as we shed our self-imposed societal blinders to the plights and tribulations of all society!!! *g*
So sad that bravery is forced on people so early, and so inspiring when they rise up and meet the challenge.
And BTW, I swear if I hear another person claim the be a Christian while talking about the sin of homosexuality, I will burst a vein on my forehead.
ironranger @ 17
The group site needs more writers. Two are on vacation and one is working on a site re-design and only two of us are posting right now. Ugh!
We got rid of the really controlling boy after about two weeks and everything has been much smoother since.
LS @ 19
he “wants”…
LS @ 5
That’s why I wanted to share their stories with you all. :-)
Blessings to all the young people in PW’s post. May they and their families find the acceptance and peace they seek.
And may our society heal itself of the ills of gender identity discrimination.
great post phoenix woman……most gay/lesbian people i know knew they were gay/lesbian from a young age…and thankfully i was around them then to talk to…glad this group isn’t wasting years of their life fighting what they know to be true, and being true to themselves…..on to being healthy, happy contributing adults.
in cast post is spotlighted, saw a typo
ryan bowker-

Phoenix Woman @ 24
Alas, what they shall inherit, I bemoan, for they shall inherit our excesses!!! 8-(
Sorry this is off topic but we have devised a plan to put pressure on the press. They think we are not out here seething. Well, we are. Please check out my homepage to see what we are planning
The following four young men and women? Now they are brave.
Brave enough to stand up to fear and hatred, and then overcome them.
Braver than I, damned straight.
-GFO
This post made me think of Bette Midler’s song “The Rose”. Brave people who will overcome.
Phoenix Woman @ 24
Alas, I bemoan what our youth shall inherit! T’is not what was handed to us, our excesses are being passed in totality to our youth!!! 8-(
what makes the Hottentots so hot?
what puts the ape in apricot?
what’ve they got that I ain’t got?
Among the brave, I would also list the 50 Presidential Scholars, high school students who delivered a letter to George W Bush today at a ceremony honoring them:
This is, I believe, called speaking truth to power in its actual face. Nice work, students: you speak for many.
Gay Liberal Talk Radio show:
About the Show
Welcome to Strictly Confidential – Coming June 18 to the Head-On Radio Network 9 pm till 11 pm Eastern Mon. thru Fri.
For too long the fundamentalist “Christian Right” has waged war on the GLBT community. While the “Christian Right” continues to block hate crime legislation, claiming it interferes with their freedom of religion, the Bush administration, cowering to their will, supports this outrage by threatening to veto legislation that would add the GLBT community to the current hate crime laws. Mind you that the “Christian Right” already enjoys protection under the said law.
GLBT individuals are routinely beaten, murdered, discharged by the military, fired and have their children taken from them at the hands of bigots who claim the moral authority to rid the world of dykes and fags. They are doing this with the full “wink and a nod” endorsement of fundamentalist Churches. Why? Some of the “faithful” do not approve of our relationships or of our commitments to one another. They scoff at the very idea that we could love a person of the same gender. This backwoods prejudice coupled with bibliolatry is the justification they use for their silence and or outright support regarding policies that allow attacks and discrimination to escalate. Gay and Lesbian children in public schools and GLBT individuals in all walks of life are just not going to take this anymore.
We are not standing idly while these fake Christians hide behind the skirts of the religion industry. It’s time that all religions embrace the maker’s message of radical inclusion and until they do, in my opinion, the Church, Mosque, Synagogue and Temple steps are covered in our blood. Welcome to the fight. Welcome to our hopes and dreams.
Hugs,
Peter Godbold
Sort of on topic. Just finished watching Semper Fi, a powerful film. Jeff Key, while older than those in your post, is a pretty good example of courage and compassion. If you haven’t seen the film, I highly recommend it.
TeddySanFran @ 33
Thanks for this, Teddy!
TeddySanFran @ 33
And Bush then claimed that the US didn’t torture and did respect human rights.
Because power isn’t speaking truth to anyone these days.
Sorry, PW! My comments were gobbled up! Or, so I thought! (Sheepish Grin) *g*
What an important post, PW. Thanx. These kids have put up w/so much & have come out the other side- many others might die in the effort of coping w/the cards that were dealt them, some might disappear into lives that are hard to imagine, much less picture. The bravery of leaving “home,” then most times living on the streets…& surviving.
Hey, Hollywood Covenant House Kids (to whom PW’s post is being emailed right now)- heads up, hearts together. A friend & I worked a long time tutoring a lot of you guys for your GEDs, teaching you to be computer literate over across Western Ave from the main house, sharing stories like the four above- you’re never far from my & Natalie’s thoughts. Love you.
TeddySanFran @ 33
I would like to ask them what they thought after Bush “reassured” them that America
is not torturing anyone and that he does not believe or condone torture.
I would ask him, “Well Mr. President, what do you call it … froshing?!!”
Homophobes are a dying breed, imo. I know my kids & their friends (all in later 20’s) don’t buy into that bigotry. Then again, none of them were brought up in extremist churches. Still, I see a big difference between the views of younger people compared to the older generations. No wonder republicans are scared of huge turnouts of college age voters.
Mutant Poodle @ 37
Yes we are. Every time we comment we speak truth to power. They are torturers. They need to be arrested. Now.
Mutant Poodle @ 21
The Apostle Paul (Saul of Tarsus) was gay. He was in love with Barnabas and they had a lover’s spat, all recorded in detail in the New Testament. He grieved and grieved over his “sin, the Angel Of Satan that keeps slapping me”, and in the meantime wrote the entire misogynistic (sp?) set of Apostolic Doctries about women in the church. Finally Jesus of Nazareth got tired of it and hit him with an “immersive vision (think Matrix Movies without need for external tech due to accessing the consciousness stream directly) of sexuality in the Kingdom of the Heavens” “in the body or out of the body I do not know, God knows…” Paul shut up about sex and was a much happier camper after than. But he was still gay.
Petrocelli @ 40
I only pray they had water-boarded Shrub, during his Skull and Bones initiation!!! Aloha, Petro!!!
mutant says:
“And BTW, I swear if I hear another person claim the be a Christian while talking about the sin of homosexuality, I will burst a vein on my forehead.”
============
mutant i have the perfect argument for that=
i proved it at bible study one night…..if i ever get my bible back out, i’ll try to find the verse for you to use on the fundies……it’s in plain english, and there were no arguments about it, a few people opened up their thinking that night……
back when i used to go to methodist church bible study, interesting group by the way, seohio farmer country, one night it was a passage about how gossiping, greed, etc., are equal to ’salaciousness’……….all sins equal in god’s eyes…..
i never held back with this group, we were all integral parts of it. about nine of us….small country methodist church, about 62 regular members.
i pointed out that according to that verse, a long list of sins were all created equal, not one above the other……i compared the ’salaciousness’, which, as the discussion grew, in their minds meant being a ‘ho’ or homosexuality, as a sin is the same as pointing out someone’s gossiping……..
there were a few gossips in the group, so that one hit home, and greed, which they all were against.
so basically they learned that they were the same as gay…….in god’s eyes
was there in plain english, no room for argument.
Alfred Kelgarries @ 43
Maybe he went to one of those religious treatment centers and got “converted” back to straight before he stopped having sex.
I’m not going to add anything here except to say that I really loved this post.
Julie Waters @ 47
Thanks. :-)
We were at a barbeque this weekend and there some gays who had come to Toronto for the festivities. Towards the end of the night, one commented to me during an extended chat that no one had treated them differently.
I smiled and said, “Welcome to Toronto !”
What I really wanted to say was “Welcome To Civilization !” but I think she understood that’s what I meant.
The Evangelists are up here, stirring up the cauldron of fear and hatred, but I think Pride Week in Toronto shut them up for awhile.
And don’t get me started on hos many yoga/meditation teachers are spewing anti- gay messages.
TSF or anyone else who knows, I would like to have the Rainbow Coalition (not sure what it’s called in America) have the major yoga studios on record, for their position on gay rights … who do I contact?
LS @ 42
I agree. I was sayin’ that power was not speaking truth to us.
Marie Roget @ 39
Thanks, Marie! I hope the kids like it. Give them all virtual hugs from us!
Mutant Poodle @ 50
Hee, hee..they don’t know that word.
How does one reconcile yoga/mediation with being anti-gay? Very weird disconnect there.
SnarKassandra @ 46
I don’t think they had those back then. They were much more elemental, they just killed “queers”, usually by stoning (remember the poor girl in Kurdish Iraq killed recently while being cell phone video’d. Like that.) Nice people, all dead now.
Alfred Kelgarries @ 54
I meant it as snark or joke.
OT but at the same time the WaPo0 is doing its four part series on Darth, the Boston Globe is doing a seven part look at Mitt Romney and his life and works.
In case you’re interested, today’s articles included how the Mormon Church got Romney deferments up until the lottery where he got a high number. Tomorrow’s articles (already up) cover the Bain Corp.
ironranger @ 53
Good point! Hmmm, Petro??? We have quite the community here, and, I’ve never met one who harbored ill-will to anyone!!! ;-)
SnarKassandra @ 55
oh, sorry. I’m deep in darkest cheney right now, and it’s not a happy place. I will self-moderate my comments with a rage filter. Because despite my cynical, world-wise demeanor, at heart i’m a sweet, innocent liberal just like my folk. And us sweet, innocent ilberals get a tad angry when something like Darth Cheney comes along. The last fools who tried this stunt on us were the British. How’d that work out for you there, George III? Thought so.
CTuttle @ 44
Aloha CT, how are you doing?
Hey, Marie Roget, and anyone else in the West LA, Santa Monica area. Just a heads up that Digby will be at Drinking Liberally on Wednesday, at the Cock and Bull Pub, 2947 Lincoln Blvd.
AK: We’re all deep in darkest cheney now. Correction: we’ve been there for 6 years but the msm is just figuring that out.
Phoenix Woman @ 51
You’ve already gotten hugs right back from ‘em. Kids responding via email. They’re a wonderful bunch of people over there on Western Ave. & those who’ve left & made it on the outside. Link for the CA Covenant Houses should anyone like to volunteer, donate, whatever:
Covenant Houses, California
ironranger @ 53
There are fundies in all faiths and beliefs, don’t let the saffron robes fool you. Perhaps because I am closer to them, I hear their true beliefs … not their talking points.
CTuttle @ 57
CT, I don’t think anyone who would enjoy gay-bashing in any way could survive ten minutes at the lake. The reason is that they would be cured of their fear of their own gayness by the magical waters of the Lake and would have left the computer and gone out for a nice drink. At the local gay nightlife establishements. Jane really ought to bill them for consultation. Talk about billable hours!
CTuttle @ 57
There are many in Toronto who are open- minded, I’d like to weed out the ones who aren’t and they’re out there.
A quick fly-by to tell you about another kind of bravery:
Scholars urge Bush to ban use of torture
High school seniors present president with letter during annual program
Great read!
Petrocelli @ 65
I think the ratio is opposite in Texas.
Alfred Kelgarries @ 64
Hi AK, CTuttle meant Hawaii, not FDL.
ironranger @ 61
I’m doing my own blog now (It’s YOUR FAULT, Suzanne and the rest!) and am writing posts deconstructing the media manipulation techniques being used in the Angler series; they are pro all the way, way above even the bylined writer’s skill. But its ugly work, cognitively speaking.
Petrocelli: I always thought of meditation as a deep relaxation road to enlightenment & acceptance. Guess the fundies must practice a different type of “meditation”.
phoenix woman, did you see my comment at 26 about the typo?
(and about what a good post it is)
after what i watched what my father’s friends went through the generation before me, and what my g/l friends went through (most of them dead from aids) in the late 70’s then the 80’s then the 90’s…….wow……i love it that so many people are just living their lives……still a long way to go, but i can see how much it has changed, made evident and marked in time by a post like this one.
nite all, up very early tomorrow, going out of town for a few days.
love, love, love.
Grrrrr…rip…tear….rip…tear…grrrrrr…oops, I might have eaten the big dawgs thang they like to play with when that dog in the box in that room I have to lie down all the time in barks….grrr…I hope I’m not in trouble…nevermind…this is fun….grrrr…rip…tear….I really want a coooooookeeeeeee.
Alfred Kelgarries @ 58
AK, I read the rest of your Late Late Nite splicing of the WaaPoo article on Chin-eeee … Thank You Thank You Thank You … can’t wait for the rest.
BTW, has Chin- eeeee fired his salvo as yet?
I don’t know if anyone has mentioned this, but in Jane’s post below she said Glenn Greeenwald’s new book, A Tragic Legacy: How a Good vs. Evil Mentality Destroyed the Bush Presidency, was at No. 134, I believe, on Amazon. I checked just now and it was up to No. 75.
Good work!
Petrocelli @ 68
oh, okay. Hi Pet! Trying to do too much at once here. Didn’t get dad to the doctor, btw. the specialist had a little traffic accident. Let me explain further than here in SA, yellow light means “Floor it!”, while red light means “Floor it and dodge!”. Stop signs mean “shift down one gear just long enough to see if a copy is looking, then floor it”, and speed limit signs are “posted minimum speeds”. The doctor, praise air bags and seat belts, is okay with a minor injury or two. The other driver is less well off but still alive (being dead drunk allows survival of amazing accidents). Our appointment got moved to wednesday, and I could hardly blame them.
Goodness, I poked a hornet’s nest! AK, I agree, Jane’s PayPal account should be humming! Petro, there’s assh*les in every crowd, however, I thought that specific pool of individuals wouldn’t foster those notions, simply by their demographics!!! My measly $.02!!! 8-)
neurophius @ 74
Wow!!!!
Mutant Poodle @ 60
Hey, MP. Thanx for the heads up. Digby in the flesh @ the Cock ‘n Bull on Lincoln? Used to live within a short walk of it back in the day. Will definitely try to knock off work to make it over there :-) Approx. time?
neurophius @ 74
Nice doggies!
neurophius @ 74
“thank you, thank you. I couldn’t have done it all by myself.”
neurophius @ 74
Excellent!
Hey, TSF, I read back and discovered you already commented about the Presidential Scholars. Now if only the MSM would take more than shallow notice!
We who venture into the deeper, cleansing waters of the Lake can attest…truth is a wonderful thing.
And Bush? The truth is not in him. Not never. No how. Least of all when he looks in his gut.
ironranger @ 70
They try to take over anything that has a large following. They get out in front and try to lead the crowd onto their path, distract them and rob them blind. I have seen guys wearing Rolexes (The Super Lux model) while telling people not to be attached to material objects …
Well, this is for big children… especially TSF

Note: A town of town of two thousand, the only city in our state (so far) to make this happen.
Petrocelli @ 73
Thanks. The whole thing and many more “ravings of a rational mind” are now at my blog. And now, Darth is still trying to figure out how to run the Death Star without Libby, who had all the firing codes. :>
dakine01 @ 56
Thanks for this. How could Mitt’s dad George Romney have been a candidate for President, being Mexican-born to American parents?

Clarification is always a good thing!!! *g*

So much hyprocisy in this country. My bullshit detector doesn’t get any downtime.
Just ordered the Greenwald book, along with a few others we should have in our home library.
I LOVE summer and private tutoring gigs.

How many signed up?
just ordered the Greenwald book as well as Marcy’s (gift for my mom) – that way I get free shipping *g*

Republican Lugar Throws Up The Kool Aid All Over The Senate, Demands Iraq Withdrawal At Once. Trent Lott Orders One Gross of Exploding Umbrella Hats For Surviving Senators. Film At Eleven!
TeddySanFran @ 86
I’ve wondered that myself. I remember when George made his “I was brainwashed” statements and the uproar that brought him but didn’t know about the birth thing.
Only thing I can think of is that there may be some exceptions for being the child of US citizens born abroad like with military and embassy personnel. I think they are considered US born/native born for the purposes of running for President, no matter where the actual birth occurred.
TeddySanFran @ 86
If he was born in an embassy or other US property like a military base he would be eligible, I believe. Surely, somebody brought that up during the campaign?
Marie Roget @ 77
Never mind. 7-9 p.m. Got it off their website.
SeamusD @ 100
Embassies are considered to be US soil.
Was it Mitt’s grandparents or great-grandparents that were polygamists? And I thought there was a fairly large american polygamy community in Mexico that I read about but can’t recall where.
ironranger @ 90
It is in every country … doesn’t always get publicized like in America.
Fueling hatred and fear can be traced to one word – G.R.E.E.D
To me, being greedy means wanting something, without being willing to work honestly for it.
So they create/dredge up fear and hatred … and voila, the money comes streaming in …

Depends. Blue paper, pink paper..depends on what years he was born. This changed a lot during and after WWII.

g’evening all – great post PW. Heroes indeed. Thank you for bringing them to our attention.
No one from the Bush family on the list? I’m shocked! This must be a horrible oversight. They always serve honorably and put our best interests before their own, right Republics?
Great color choice for this post, Suzanne — rainbow indeed!
I have a stupid question.
Natural born doesn’t have anything to do with being born from a c-section right? Like with Julius Caesae? It just means born in the US, right?
Suzanne @ 109
The crowd goes wild. Even the Bulgarian Judge is dancing. I now have a blog and I still can’t get the dang zed in the comments.
Suzanne @ 109
Hiya Suzanne!
AK — I have the very first zed on your blog.
Cassie, yes it deals with location of birth and not the method.
AK, I’ve been over there already and left ya a comment.
Thanks, Teddy.
SnarKassandra @ 112
Believe it or not, there’s an extensive Wikipedia entry on it. Did anyone know John McCain was born in PANAMA?
TexB @ 115
I know and I cordially hate you for it. :>
dakine01 @ 99
Correct. My mother was born in India, of parents born in Chicago and Colorado Springs. She was born a US citizen. Though, since she had no birth certificate (born 1914 when these things weren’t real important) she had to jump through hoops in WWII to get a job. Ended up with a letter from Cordell Hull certifying her citizenship.
Suzanne @ 109
Extra points for the Rainbow attire! Greetings from the Rainbow State!!!
SnarKassandra @ 113
That is correct. Natural or native born. It is why folks like Henry Kissinger or Ahnald Schwarsnegger can NOT run for president.
It was another of those great ideas from the founders of the Republic who had concerns about where people’s allegiance would lie.
Alfred Kelgarries @ 118
I had searched for a way, when you first announced , AK!!! :P
And, Cassie, may I point out to you the Suzanne family rule: The only stupid question is the one not asked :)
dakine01 @ 121
I suspect it largely hinged on the utter incompetence of the Georges of Hanover, who were not in any sense natural born Englishmen; George I never bothered to learn English or (IIRC) even visit England. The Founders had that horrible example right in their faces due to the syphillitic insanity of George III.
And we wonder why the current Princes Royal are such…libertines….blood will tell.
Alfred Kelgarries @ 118
McCain’s father was an officer in the US Navy. Probably was in the Canal Zone, US property at the time. Dependents born overseas are considered natural born for presidential qualifications.
Part 3 is up
AK, how does one get to your blog? I don’t see your name underlined at the tops of your FDL comments.
You might want to enter your URL in the line marked “Website” below “Leave a Reply.”
dakine01 @ 127
Get to work, AK !!! *g*
PW –
Late to the post, but great, great stuff. True courage indeed.
I had to chuckle, though, at the description of Carol Stream IL as “rural.” To me, CS is a suburb/exurb of Chicago. Rural IL to me is the 3 traffic light towns found downstate.
SeamusD @ 125
I figured it was something like that. But it interests me that, in a time when the MSM feels that it has to run hour long special reports on John Edwards’ haircuts, that nobody bothers to point out this little gem. Perhaps because the red-meat Rethug voter would say, “PA-NA-MAW! Ain’t that where NOR-EE-AYGA was? Damn, McCain’s a drug dealer! Can’t vote fer him!”
You watch. It will happen. :>
dakine01 @ 122
The Repugs are trying to change this, because of people like Kissinger and Schwarznegger. Another Republican plan to corrupt our Constitution.
I have a zed. New thread.
AK @ 114
I now have a blog and I still can’t get the dang zed in the comments.

AK on Part 3: It says flatly that Dick Cheney made the President throw out the capital gains tax cuts. That is the kiss of death to the republican money crowd. To them, this is the equivalent of saying he arranged for hillary clinton to be president for life. Oh, I’m going to love this one…
and it proves NO ONE has a line on this story. As I reported earlier, rums from “knowledgeable insiders” was the piece three was on energy and four on pre-war intel. Wrong-O Mary Lou!
Okay, i’ve got: rational scissors, MSM decoder box, Fox News Decoder Ring (from Wingnut Crunches with Chinese Melamine Sugar), brain bleach, yep I’m ready. Off to the heart of Darthest Cheneyfrica!
(Cue Hatari Theme….)

I loved this post. I was especially interested in the story of Ryan Bowker. Given his interest in becoming an RN, I would direct him to apply to Berea College, in Berea, KY (my alma mater). Not only do they have one of the top nursing programs in the country, they are a unique institution in that it was one of the first colleges to offer and education to women, African-Americans, and those who would otherwise have no opportunity to obtain a college eductation.
Students a Berea do not pay tuition, only room and board. It is a work study program, but Berea offers a wonderful liberal arts program, in addition to being one of the bastions of tolerance in the midst of a very red state. It also has a large LGBT community where Ryan would easily find acceptance, along witha good education.
If you have any contact with him, please let him know about this resource: http://www.berea.edu.
