Commenting on the SCOTUS decision to strengthen the First Amendment when it comes to the ability of the right and the rich to peddle mass bullshit, Digby says:
I will never forgive Joe Lieberman, Huckelberry, St John and the the rest of the milquetoast losers of that gang of 14. This is on their heads.
Kennedy seems to have found a cozy perch siding with the court’s wingier nuts in a 5-4 split. The Gang of 14 did this to us and as the blogosphere has taken on the role of institutional memory for this kind of thing, I don’t think we’ll be forgetting any time soon.
Yes, Susan Collins, I’m looking at you.

Okay, Tres. And I’ll never forgive Joe Lieberman either……for a number of things.
You know, for all of Byrd’s criticisms of this administration, he has gone along on issues that will affect us for a long time down the road.
Republicans
* John McCain, Arizona
* Lindsey Graham, South Carolina
* John Warner, Virginia
* Olympia Snowe, Maine
* Susan Collins, Maine
* Mike DeWine, Ohio
* Lincoln Chafee, Rhode Island
Democrats
* Joe Lieberman, Connecticut
* Robert Byrd, West Virginia
* Ben Nelson, Nebraska
* Mary Landrieu, Louisiana
* Daniel Inouye, Hawaii
* Mark Pryor, Arkansas
* Ken Salazar, Colorado
Gaffney is making a case that through an executive order the president can exempt someone within the executive branch from reporting requirements that are mandated by Congress.
Why is this not raising some hackles with the leadership with the exception of Emanuel?
Further proof besides Dem/Rep joint actions that we are no longer a two party political system:
First it was Repubs for Obama. Now its McCain Supporters Doing TV Ads for Obama!
what Jane said
Need a head of steam for the Impeach Alito & Roberts movement. Lying about stare decisis during your confirmation hearing has to be grounds for impeachment.
Among the MANY things that drive me stark raving crazy about this…
When the Publicans ran Congress, the very IDEA of SUGGESTING that there MIGHT be a filibuster against legislation was completely beyond the pale. How DARE the Democrats think of such a thing?
Now we’re (supposedly) in charge. And suddenly, on any issue, the Senate Democrats fold whenever they don’t have the 60 votes they need for cloture. Why? Because the Republicans might filibuster. They don’t even have to ACTUALLY filibuster a bill — just the very THOUGHT is enough to make our leaders swoon.
So when they control Congress, it takes 50 votes to pass a bill. When we do, we need 60. That cloture-proof, veto-proof majority that we’re not going to get for at least the next year and a half.
Democracy inaction!
And, btw, Sloan writes a better fight than she speaks.
And again we hear “…in a time of war.”
This is NOT a war. If it is, then congress needs to start acting according to its constitutional mandates and get a grip on this out of control administration.
Good night all.
How about this wrt Rudy’s campaign. His buddy who got indicted for cocaine, well his father will be Rudy’s state campaign co-chair. Turns out his father (nameed Jr.) isn’t doing much better…..

Josh’s Election Central:
On October 18, 2006 The Post and Courier of Charleston, SC wrote ” Arthur Ravenel Jr., who is running for an East Cooper seat on the board, caught flack 16 years ago when he was in Congress and made a comment about white committee chairmen who operated on ‘black time,’ which he said meant fashionably late.”
As recently as January 2000, the Post and Courier reported in an article headlined “Ravenel stepped outside ‘civility,’” that Ravenel called the NAACP the “National Association For Retarded People.”
When asked about the comment in the story, Ravenel said that he misspoke. “It was a slip of the tongue. I have never said the NAACP was retarded,” he told the Post and Courier. “I made a rhetorical slip, and they want to lynch me for it.”
TeddySanFran @ 10
really? about the stare decisis?
Valley Girl @ 6
Disinformation at its subtlest best. Tweety takes the sensational headline, “Is Cheney running the country?” then goes soft, allowing Gaffney to get away with saying that Cheney is the Vice Pres of the senate. He is the President of the Senate, even I know that, and I don’t know much.
“I don’t think we’ll be forgetting any time soon.”
You can bet the farm on it. ;0)
woid @ 11
Other than the oversight committee hearings, and cutting off 4th Branch funding, they might as well all just go home. No more legislation. Go home. If they must show up, they should just bring a book, like Glenn Greenwald’s book. Just fogetaboutit…
Well, at least they’re doing SOMETHING:
Vote To DeThrone Emperor Darth To Be Held This Week!
STAMFORD – Stamford’s native senator is returning to his hometown, and possibly to the neighborhood where he grew up.
U.S. Sen. Joseph Lieberman, I-Conn., announced yesterday that he plans to move back to Stamford after 47 years in New Haven, where he moved to attend Yale University in 1960.Thanks for the warning..
When I look at that pix at the top and see Warner, McCain and Lieberman, it’s Lieberman I focus on.
WILL JOE LIEBERMAN ENDORSE AL WYNN? STEVE BLACK? …MEAN JEAN SCHMIDT???
from DWT! BTW
~~Black looks at Mean Jean’s near-death experience last November– when Vic Wulsin drew 117,595 votes against her 120,112– and he thinks the grassroots and progressive Democrats in OH-02 are just sitting around waiting for him to step up to the plate. So he’s filed a primary challenge to Vic (as has anti-choice loon Jeff Sinnard). These two are entitled to challenge Vic in a primary. Her problem– our problem– is that she’ll have to divert funds that should be going towards educating voters in southwest Ohio about Mean Jean’s voting-record-from-another-planet.~~~
~~Black says he’s running as a Democrat because our party has moved in his direction lately. He has loads of cash– and rich Cincinnati blue-blood connections~~~
Never mind, I really can’t summarize Howie’s post in a few quotes.
Just go read how to help Vic, and Donna Edwards, and Tom Allen.
TeddySanFran @ 10
It was just a misunderstanding Roberts and Alito thought the Senators were talking about “starry the eyes is” which they agreed that the Senators had to be in order to believe what they were saying during their confirmation hearings.
Lieberman causes me to seethe.
Alfred Kelgarries @ 8
This kind of stuff makes me even more anti-Obama..Since Lieberman is mentor..I am sure Obama would want to close the “partisan divide” and have “national reconciliation” with the fascists.
TeddySanFran @ 10
Lying about stare decisis? Not impeachable. Now, if they had lied about their wee-wees? That would be impeachable as all get out.
As a Mainer, I’m so happy to see dear Susan getting the attention she deserves!

My contempt for Lieberman knows no bounds.

Could you possibly be a little more specific? :)
Collins is toast.
If I didn’t know better, I’d think the Democrats are fearful of Lieberman.
The SCROTUS should be doing something important, like commenting on Paris Hilton or debating the best bait for Crappie (the fish).
Twain @ 32
other than the fact that my contempt for him will never subside?
Jane – when you move to D.C., could you possibly see to it that Justice Kennedy is tazered daily? His swing vote is too important to take the chance that he’s sleeping through these arguments and issues.
So then. Cheney is the Godfather?
punaise @ 36
I think we knew that – seems to have been mentioned a few hundred times. Just thought you might like to make a list. I believe we all could.
What is Rove’s role?
A Gore/Bloomberg ticket sounds good.
I take solace in the fact that we are not sitting here bemoaning the fact that Vice President Lieberman has a lock on the 2008 nomination. Small solace, but solace nonetheless.

sorry, too busy/intellectually lazy. I’ll just be over in the corner, wallowing in a general sense of disgust.

you’d think that roberts,

Lieberman signing on to Susan Collins’ campaign insured that Tom Allen would be the #1 fund-raiser at our Blue America page! He’s out-raised everyone, primarily because of Lieberman’s support for Collins. Lieberman’s going to become even more of a political pariah than he already is. In just 3 days last week, we raised over $4,000 for Tom, bringing his total online take to $23,110.
I’m hoping Lieberman joins Harold Ford in endorsing Al Wynn (over Donna Edwards) and that he realizes that Ned Lamont and Vic Wulsin are old pals and that he goers for the corporate slime running against her.
And Rudy is the cream of the Republican crop?
Oklahoma kiddo @ 67
curdled
There is this guy blogging about Fred Thompson (biggest thing since Reagan) and he claims that Lieberman would be the ideal candidate.
He says “He is not, of course, Ronald Reagan – no one is and no one ever has been in the history of the Republic – but in terms of his ability to move conservatives without being demonized, Fred Thompson is, in that sense, truly the next Reagan. I believe that his nomination is a foregone conclusion, and that the only real issue remaining is his running mate.

The key is that items Halliburton lists as revenue are not assembled or ready to use.
Can books be considered such bought for the purpose of resale instead of legitimate use?

He is scary alright. I recently saw an interview with him on the documentary channel. They asked him about his holocaust experience, and he got really defensive and upset. He tried to get up and leave the interview, and he asked them sarcastically how they were going to “use” him. He did go on to reveal a few things. Other than that, he has refused to talk about it for his whole life since he left. He lost a lot of family members. He left in something like 1938 at about 15. He may have some extremely personal survival guilt issues that may explain how driven he has been throughout his life. Pent up pain and feelings like that are very dangerous because sometimes you behave like your persecutors as you seek revenge. It is very sad and frightening actually.

I posted this on TNH yesterday:
I wonder if, in all this, there might be a way to use this to turn Bush against Cheney. Does anyone think Bush will read the WaPo article? W is hyper-concerned about his place in history. If history decides that Cheney was really the driving force in W’s administration, where does the president fit in, historically. If he gets the idea that history will see him as Cheney’s puppet, what might his reaction to that be, now?
Alfred Kelgarries @ 78

Ah, but we know that AK is/has been part of the Spook world rather than the ghost world.
Bush is narcissistic, he’s motivated by other’s perceptions of him to the point he overcompensates. False bravado, hubris, cowboys on steroids, locker room humor…
Saddam Hussein was the same way and could be baited to action that eventually confirmed his weakness and poor judgement.
Joe Wilson called Saddam out, knowing the consequence but expecting the man’s motivations would match the Ambassador’s careful expectations.

There has never been any doubt about this in my mind. Bush’s sense of inferiority re Cheney as well as Poppy is one reason he always pumps himself up…I am the Decider Syndrome.
If Cheney is a replica of Bush’s relationship with Poppy, there probably is also a lot of resentment there too, but Bush cannot do without Cheney, just as he cannot escape the shadow of Poppy.
To complete the Oedipal triangle, there is Condi in the middle, so we have Cheney and Condi battling for Bush’ mind (such as it is), just the way it probably used to happen with Poppy and Bar.
One difference: Between Poppy and Bar, Bar is the vicious one, whereas there is no doubt Cheney can outsnarl Condi.
What a mess!

It’s just more evidence that there is really no difference between the Dems and Repukes, as far as the power structure is concerned. If the GOP is looking like a bad bet this election cycle, just re-paper yourself back to the Dems. Bloomberg has already switched once, without losing a stroke, and he’ll flip back the same way. A sad commentary on our “two party” system.

Here’s a thought. The first really big, Bush is too stupid to be responsible for his actions, red herring, was that he was portrayed reading My Pet Goat, when the WTC was attacked. When else in his entire presidency has he done anything like that? Sounds to me to be by design, but I believe in conspiracy. Sorry. ;>

Yes, Daniel Inouye is one of my Senators. I think he now ranks as the bluest of Hawaii’s Blue Dog Democrats. It would be almost impossible to find a progressive Democrat to run against him. At least, Inouye firmly supported our other Senator, Dan Akaka, one of the most progressive Senators. In turn, Akaka is likely to support Inouye’s next election campaign, which is widely assumed despite his age.

It might just be. But, IIRC, at first he said that his amendment idea was just a joke. I don’t think he really meant it, until it got some coverage and started to look like it might go some where. Then he was all for it.
Just my 2cents.
LS @ 118
I think you are over thinking..T-Rex’s razor says Bush really is stupid. Bush is unique..A stupid psychopath who is not in prison. Just goes to show what money and family influence can do for a person.
Er… excuse me…
I should be mad at the gang of 14? Why? Did they elect a president and Majority of the Senate when I wasn’t looking?? I thought that the President got to nominate SC Justices and the Senate got to advise and consent. If all those good, patriotic folks hadn’t elected “The Nominator” and his posse we wouldn’t be having this discussion.
Blaming the Gang of 14 is like blaming your plumber when your toilet overflows because you flushed your coat.
Didn’t we all (fear) know this was going to happen when Florida was declared in the SC?
I’m saddened, pissed off, and upset… true. But not at some Senate folk who were trying to play tennis with a muddy ball and got dirty. I’m pissed at the guy who dirtied the ball in the first place.
Don’t lose focus folks… the next President can help make it better, or increase the damage. The next Senate (with a big enough margin) will make the so called “gang” of whatever irrelevant.

Not necessary. Which one was it that promised to recuse himself during a confirmation hearing and then reneged? (I think it was Roberts…lying to Congress is a crime after all). Besides, we have Scalia who would be a great choice for impeachment, IMO. The 2000 interference in the election (makng him and several others impeachable) and the Cheney hunting trip conflict of interest where he refused to recuse. I’ve wanted to get him for 2000 since the event and it still sticks in my craw that they got away with it.
Steve @ 127
Believe me. I would much rather believe that he is stupid or lazy and incompetent (I can buy that), but there are some serious questions that have, so far, not been answered to my satisfaction. That could, of course, be explained by the secrecy of the Administration, which makes you 10 times more suspicious of them. I hope you are right, because I would rather live in a world where stupidity rules than be a victim of planned, sinister activities.

Others are commenting on the mental ill-health of Bush and Darth-
IMO, Bush really does have a character disorder. i was taught that each word someone uses is a speech. so, watching for the specific word usage you describe, i agree.
Today’s rulings deferred religious initiative talk to Homeland Security, how the hell does that agency have anything to do with domestic spending for religious initiatives?
This flies in the face of the premise, that DoHS and unitary powers should go unchallenged.
This is an extension of such. This is a result of the 109th Congress, a breach of law.
The judge who indicted Nixon for Impeachment citing “failure to uphold the law” comes to mind on the day of his passing.
So the Executive cannot be checked, Establishment is not really a vague term, Congress allowed him to channel said funds.
Then those voting for the funds should be sued for Impeachment. Start with retired members first.
If there’s a claim nobody was wronged, there’s a levee in NOLA and FEMA that must needs be addressed re:Homeland Security.
The SCOTUS brought the terms up… once in the arena it appears a rather complex deconstruction must be maintained and undertaken.
If the POTUS will not uphold the Constitution and the courts give him sway, then Congress can sure as hell be compelled to act.
One has yet to even demonstrate the effectiveness of abstinence training and intelligent design in religious initiatives, along with the possibility these items were Hatch Act violations in red states or themselves or were implemented in anti- abortion campaigning.

And then, HST can rest somewhat easier as Yorba Linda’s Trickiest Dickie’s shadows melt into the noghingness where they all belong.

Advisor. Major advisor. He DOES review and comment on PNAC’s every step . . . as an advisor . . . the doer’s are the one’s we are chasing . . . Shooter and Rover.
good job, AK – congrats.
echo Punaise, AK. Keep it up! Looking forward to updates.
Are Bush & Cheney sadists? Do they feel pleasure at the thought of others being tortured? Incredible that Cheney wanted people buried alive. My God!

I really think this was a combined effort on the part of EVERYONE that Shooter, Rove and PNAC pissed off, burnt, threatened, etc.
Every public agency, Big Biz, MIC, CIA, Pentagon . . . even Condi . . . everyone that was on board with the PNAC scam from the get go is now looking for a safe way to get the fall guy, hang him and a few others, and make sure all the HORRIBLE stuff that’s become public knowledge in the past 7 years is ‘dealt with’ . . and that NO MORE horrible stuff comes to light . . . cuz EVERYONE is guilty and has serious baggage with respect to this admin . . . some goals have been accomplished but, there’s been too many screw up’s and too much info has come to light about how big biz and governmet collude for profit . . . . Time now to nail someone, move on and make sure Oversight Committee’s come to rest, and of course, EVERYONE now has to think, how they are gonna use the next admin coming to town soon, to profit . . . . . only it has to be a much less public scheme this time . . . no overt Constitutionalist issues, back to white envelopes every Friday at the back door kinda collusion . . . even more BIDDING, rigged bidding, but bidding will be en vogue again.
I bet Poppy helped to orchestrate the actual DOING of the reporting and enable the talking done by those who ratted out Shooter, but he did so at the request of THE POWERS THAT BE . . . or rather, at their COMMAND! After all, BoyKing IS his son . . . and Poppy has been a loyalist to TPTB forever.
PNAC and this Admin just went too far, became WAY to visible, and Shooter/Rove were the one’s who took it too far. Now they gotta pay.
Condi gets the VP slot, BoyKing finishes the term, Iran does NOT get done, and Shooter/Rove go down in history as bad guys (they don’t really care about their images anyway) . . . BoyKing has a legacy albeit a bit of a clouded one, but he’s NOT the bad guy in all of this.
How’s that work? I don’t have much else to throw out . . . . Oh, wait . . here’s a doozy of a wrap up . . . as to WHY someone has to hang, now.
They HAVE to stop the bleeding now, because the UGLIEST shadow still hidden is that this admin and PNAC and their supporters and EVERYONE in big biz and MIC and such DID create and enable 911 from the get go . . . and that just can’t be allowed to come to light.
Closing the barn door on Shooter/Rove ends the oversight efforts that MIGHT lead to exposing this most HORRIBLE of truths . . .
And then, the next scheme can begin to unhatch upon an unwary public, all over again.
