What’s your best post of the week? Pimp ‘em if you got ‘em.
Worth noting:
. Lunch with Lieberman — whine, whine, whine. Didn’t you just know HoJo speaks of himself in the third person?
. Jill wants to know where the tipping point of evil is — i.e., what it will take to get Nancy Pelosi to put impeachment back on the table. Though not a fan myself it’s hard to take exception to the “if not now, then when” argument.
. Turns out people who think Adam and Eve rode to church on dinosaurs aren’t such a good recruiting tool. Whoda thunk.
. Cernig says Malkin is a human rights concern troll. If she’s all about human rights these days, Larissa has a few photos of causes that the beaver-toothed one might think of taking up.
. I’m told I am the Tanta of political blogging now. By Tanta herself. Nice to know word doofus has so many cross-diciplinary applications.
*And yes, skippy coined that term..

can it be….??
I’ll get you for this, Sir Alfred! : )
Impeachment? I don’t think my party has the nerve for much of anything. Let alone impeachment.
oddmommy @ 3
moi? :)
Sorry OT again, but this could be important…
also couldn’t link but its from an Adalaide Paper…
PRIME Minister John Howard has revealed Australia initially agreed only to commit troops to Iraq for the invasion stage, in an admission Labor says undermines his argument for keeping them there.
Mr Howard told the Ten Network today he was involved in discussions with US President George W Bush and then Defence Secretary Donald Rumsfeld over Australian deployment.
“The understanding we had with the Americans, when we originally participated, was that after the sharp end (of the invasion) was over we weren’t going to have any troop presence,” he said.
I only got ONE little zed, once in the middle of the afternoon……and no one even noticed. : (
oddmommy @ 6
I noticed.
Well that was a pretty special book salon. Glenn’s book is, quite predictably, amazing.

We all noticed, and were just too proud of you to speak.
I made a music video – does that count as a post? Sibel Edmonds meets Leonard Cohen’s Everybody Knows
And the gutless-wonders of them all are Obama and Hillary.

Don’t leave yourself out of it jane. Like hummingbirds to the feeder, the leaders of the progressive blogs congregate around your site. Now if we could only get them to stop buzzbombing each other, and stop molesting the nearby flower garden…:>

And the pre-ordering has been pushing the price down. I got a notice they’ve shipped mine, and that the price had dropped again since I ordered — a decrease that they pass on to all who order.
gee, thanks you guys, that was ’specially good!
Every time I read about more American GI’s meeting their death in Iraq, I feel so damn proud of being a Democrat, it almost makes me sick.

Oh my Lord. Am I being radical again?
Congrats on the zed Alfred. It reminded me of the time oddmommy got it, for some reason.
I added an introduction a few days ago to my scandals list. It was kind of on topic for the last thread.
The list by the way is up to 198.
I’m an idiot. Sibel Edmonds meets Leonard Cohen’s Everybody Knows is here. Sorry.

In other news, John Roberts is showing the white hooded sheets under his black robes: He apparently wants to revisit Brown v. Board this week and use it to screw black people, natch.
Hi all!
Just briefly checking in from Portland OR where I went to a FAB panel yesterday with Daniel Ellsberg, Mike Gravel and Bob West moderated by Amy Goodman. It was telling the back story of the publishing of the Pentagon Papers. It’s the 35th anniversary of said event and Beacon Press pulled this panel together.
I spoke with Ellsberg and Gravel and Goodman afterwards asking if they were coming to YKos. Gravel looked at his aide who nodded. Ellsberg said he would if invited and Amy didn’t know what I was talking about (actually none of them did). They are all worried about Iran and wish that those with access to the files would out them before we’re at war again. Bravery needed.
So do you think someone could scare up an invite for Ellsberg to speak at YKos? Or am I mistaken that this would be worth the rest of you hearing?
Oh my God. Somebody mentioned Leonard Cohen. ;0)

This makes me cry :( , and to think that this boy (and I mean that as a mother of 4 boys would) only suffers because he was sent to fight in an illegal, imoral and completely unjustified invasion, makes it so much harder. Ghod, two in a row: From Pow Wow downstairs, from the pen of abraham lincoln:
TO WILLIAM H. HERNDON.
WASHINGTON, February 15, 1848.
DEAR WILLIAM:–Your letter of the 29th January was received last night. Being exclusively a constitutional argument, I wish to submit some reflections upon it in the same spirit of kindness that I know actuates you. Let me first state what I understand to be your position. It is that if it shall become necessary to repel invasion, the President may, without violation of the Constitution, cross the line and invade the territory of another country, and that whether such necessity exists in any given case the President is the sole judge.
Before going further consider well whether this is or is not your position. If it is, it is a position that neither the President himself, nor any friend of his, so far as I know, has ever taken. Their only positions are–first, that the soil was ours when the hostilities commenced; and second, that whether it was rightfully ours or not, Congress had annexed it, and the President for that reason was bound to defend it; both of which are as clearly proved to be false in fact as you can prove that your house is mine. The soil was not ours, and Congress did not annex or attempt to annex it. But to return to your position. Allow the President to invade a neighboring nation whenever he shall deem it necessary to repel an invasion, and you allow him to do so whenever he may choose to say he deems it necessary for such purpose, and you allow him to make war at pleasure. Study to see if you can fix any limit to his power in this respect, after having given him so much as you propose. If to-day he should choose to say he thinks it necessary to invade Canada to prevent the British from invading us, how could you stop him? You may say to him,–I see no probability of the British invading us”; but he will say to you, “Be silent: I see it, if you don’t.”
The provision of the Constitution giving the war making power to Congress was dictated, as I understand it, by the following reasons: kings had always been involving and impoverishing their people in wars, pretending generally, if not always, that the good of the people was the object. This our convention understood to be the most oppressive of all kingly oppressions, and they resolved to so frame the Constitution that no one man should hold the power of bringing this oppression upon us. But your view destroys the whole matter, and places our President where kings have always stood. Write soon again.
Yours truly,
A. LINCOLN.
Amen.
If Brown is overturned, whoever writes the decision needs to be impeached stat.
Peace.
And I hope it’s Clarence.

if you haven’t taken a look in a while… hugh’s list is over 30 pages now (and kept up to date).
Oh boy, Jackie. Did he survive is the question.
From Jill’s post noted by Jane above:
I read that piece, and thought of Patrick Leahy blowing his stack over the DOJ mess. If anyone is going to wind up being successfully impeached, it’s going to be AGAG.
On the other hand, when folks sigh and say “It’s just politics,” then we’ve gotten to Jill’s tipping point of evil winning out.
There is a very simply way to deal with Thomas, Scalia, Kennedy, Alito and Roberts. FDR had the same exact problem before in the mid-1930’s.
THE NUMBER OF MEMBERS OF THE SUPREME COURT IS SET BY LAWS OF CONGRESS, NOT THE CONSTITUTION. (hint)
Only this time we add language making it exempt from SC review due to conflict of interest. And we add language the size can only be changed by a supermajority in both houses and only once every 50 years or so.
The high court is not a judicial king anymore than chimpy is an executive one. but they may have just forgotten that…
Peterr @ 50
I thought we got uncomfortably close on the last thread.
Hugh @ 21
that’s very good!
What I think the pro-impeachment people don’t get is that it’s not just a matter of Dubya deserving impeachment (he obviously does). It has to be the expression of a public consensus that he has to go.
Right now, there’s a public consensus that he’s a bad president — but not that he can’t be tolerated in office a moment longer. If the people saying “impeach, impeach” focused on creating a sense of agreement (even among politically inattentive folks) that he’s morally unfit to remain in office, then impeachment becomes the obvious answer to the question, “What do we do about it?”
Skipping the persuasion step and jumping straight to impeachment is going to strike people as nothing more than tit-for-tat revenge for what was done to Clinton. And with some valid reasons — if the standard for impeachment is just “a majority in Congress thinks he deserves it” rather than a public consensus, then the Clinton impeachment was totally legit.
Scarecrow @ 53
Agreed. I came late to the thread, but I definitely seemed to hear that from some quarters.

Swopa @ 55
For Gonzales, on the other hand, the “persuasion step” is becoming a march. Every time another senior DOJ official steps down in disgrace, every time another document dump comes through showing political meddling by the WH in what ought to be non-partisan legal affairs, and every time career DOJ folks speak out about political intrusions, the pace of the march of persuasion gets faster.
And the story’s not going away. BushCo has to fill those vacant slots, which means confirmation hearings, which means trouble for AGAG.

since jane asked… i’m going to pimp today’s post from arthur silber. it discusses the potential for war with iran and what congress is doing about it. warning – it’s not good news… but at least with a dem congress, we have some leverage. i’m going to be calling my rep (again) on monday.
Peterr @ 58
I’m not sure they are going to fill them. The montana guy jumped ship on his hearings, but is staying in montana to keep the lid on the indian crisis (c*s*n*s and theft of the mineral (oid) royalties to the tune of about 5 trillion (with a T) plus interest.)
Swopa @ 55
You’d be surprised, I suspect, at how much we actually “get.” There are levels of public consensus, starting with the step that an impeachment inquiry should be initiated, to appointing a special impeachment committee, to voting on impeachment, to moving the matter to trial. Even the beginning step is worthwhile, even if the final step of removal from office seems wholly implausible. It is not just Nancy Pelosi who has taken this valuable too off the table. It is the liberal blogosphere.
As to what the public wants, that’s a matter to be explored. If you look at the most conservative of polls, Rasumussen, you’ll find that the disapproval rate hovers between 62-64 percent, but there are 45-47% who “strongly disappprove.” I don’t think we have tapped the level of deep anger at this regime, and right now, they have no avenue for expressing that anger — and so they’re taking it out via further disapproval of Congress.
I think the Democrats are trying to force me out.
AK @62:
Sorry to the mods. Will remember next time, I hope….
Scarecrow, this is patently off topic but would you answer for me sometime, can we do this? You suggested it a while back on Christy’s post Reality Bites Back on American poverty:
But you know what Rahm, Hillary and the DLC? I’m not going anywhere.
Elliott @ 65
I think it’s possible, but it’s up to Jane, etc. If you look at what happened on the last thread, we had Christy, Glenn and Digby all on at once, and a group like that could easily handle a focused topic — with each offered a 3-4 paragraph opening statement on the front page. I don’t know whether it’s something that a lot of others would like to see — but it doesn’t seem a technical problem.
The fight is not between me and the Republicans. It’s between me and my party. And I’m up for it!
Scarecrow @ 61
i agree. it’s been some time since i first read (i’d have to go hunting for the link) that polls have shown that a majority of americans think president bush should be impeached if he lied us into the iraq war.
i don’t think the impediment is the public – i think the impediment is congress… they just don’t see the political advantage.
if that’s so… then the question for the pro-impeachment crowd ought, i think, to be: how do we convince a majority in congress to change their political calculus to see the impeachment process as something politically advantageous.
Oklahoma kiddo @ 66

When I was off googling to find out more about NOLA deaths and healthcare New Orleans deaths up 47% …
(snip from above- ~~Doctors say the dramatic surge in deaths comes as no surprise in a city of 250,000 mostly poor and middle-class people who lost seven of 22 hospitals and half of the city’s hospital beds. More than 4,486 doctors were displaced from three New Orleans parishes, creating a shortage that still hampers many hospitals, says a companion study released Thursday.
The indigent suffered the brunt of the health toll from the 2005 storm. The Medical Center of Louisiana at New Orleans, two hospitals that made up the city’s safety net for the uninsured, were severely damaged. Charity Hospital, oldest and best known of the two, remains closed. ~~~)

I would say that a lot of the persuading has to be done by the media and the media act like impeachment is some sort of taboo that can not be mentioned in polite society. This is an odd state of affairs since the media had no problems pushing a vacuous impeachment of Clinton. Indeed no Democrat would still be in office if he or she had done or been responsible for one tenth what Bush has done.
I think that it is this very real position of the media to effectively defend Bush by pooh-poohing impeachment that shows more than any other just how in bed they are with the corporate elites that run this country. They are way beyond co-opted. They are and continue to be active enablers of what has happened to our country in the last 6 years.
This is from Dan Froomkin’s White House Watch at the WaPo0 last Tuesday:
“The upshot was a train wreck — mile after mile of shame, infamy, embarrassment and occasional farce. . . .
“I have come to hate the war and I cannot approve of lying under oath — not by Scooter, not by Bill Clinton, not by anybody. But the underlying crime is absent, the sentence is excessive and the investigation should not have been conducted in the first place. This is a mess. Should Libby be pardoned? Maybe. Should his sentence be commuted? Definitely.”
In other words, says Cohen: Turn the lights back off.

I’d love it. Perhaps the questioning/commenting could be limited to the experts. Seems awfully difficult for the guest to try to read through and respond to all of the questions. Then afterwards, we pups could discuss it without feeling like we’re interferring. Maybe not that scenerio, but some stricter kind of groundrules…

It would be great to have someone who was really informed about health care issues (i.e. in the thick of the battle) blog from time to time at FDL.
Loo Hoo. @ 80
advance questions maybe?
Hugh @ 79
This is a self-fulfulling prophesy. The media don’t talk about it because the Dems say it’s not a topic, and the Republicans have no incentive to bring it up on their own. The progressive blogs are letting it slide because they thought the oversight hearings would soon reveal enough to force the topic into public discourse, but they did not reckon a complete stonewalling by the WH – it never occured to them that Bush would insist that Gonzales not resign, even though he is totally disgraced — we keep underestimating how shameless they are — we need to go for the juggler, because the beast is at the country’s throat. We screwed ourselves and need to admit it.

Elliott @ 85
Sure is maddening :/
Worth reading via truthout.org today: Dowd and Frank Rich.
The Chee-knee-Bushie avalanche is already underway, and Republicans still defend these guys…from Perino to the witless Kay Bailey H…
More and more, those who call themselves “history’s actors” are showing themselves for the vampires of democracy they are. And as for the Boy Pretender himself, his legacy will be scorn, loathing and contempt. Or laughingstock.
Now back to catch up on comments and Book Salon. Oh, and, with Dowd, you go, archivists!
Scarecrow @ 88
Agreed. And I am ashamed of how much sense you make here, Scarecrow.
Scarecrow- yes, Kirk’s posts have been very interesting and informative. But, I would certainly find it useful to have the complementary perspective from a “white hat” health care lawyer. Personal insights from the docs provide the push, but laws about our healtcare seem to be where we want and need change.

and if anyone’s into 3/5 of the yardbirds, skippy’s sunday nite music club features jimmy page (after kicking heroin) playing w/eric clapton and jeff beck on an instrumental version of stairway to heaven.
Scarecrow @ 88
Agreed. One of the things we keep forgetting is that the Democratic leadership we have now is the same one that was supine for the first 6 years of the Bush Presidency. Also this President is out of control and by definition this means that he will go on the way he has until he is stopped either by a resolute Congress or impeachment. Neither of these is yet on the horizon.
Hugh @ 79
Yes and no, IMO — a big part of the problem is how Democrats talk about specifics rather than themes. I’ve posted here a couple of times recently about the need to start weaving issues from Plame to the U.S. attorney firings to Iraq a narrative about Bush’s personal moral failure. That has to be the entry point into the discussion, not the formality of an “impeachment inquiry.”
With only some hyperbole, I’d say that Republicans’ message about Clinton was, “He acted in a way that you’d be ashamed to tell your kids.”
In contrast, Democrats’ message tends to be, “He violated section 12(c) of Chapter 344-7 of the…”. There’s a problem there, I think.
skippy @ 96

Has anyone considered creating a community on Second Life? It is a virtual world, complete with avatars. I work at an educational institution, and it is being heavily used in higher ed to create communities of interest exactly like FDL. You register using a huge list (you must pick one from this list) of “surnames” and whichever first name you like — obviously could use your FDL handle. I am msmolly babii on Second Life. My avatar is pretty boring but you can customize a lot.
I haven’t really spent a lot of time digging into it, but perhaps one of the more geeky folks here who have time to explore could check it out for us and let us know if it’s worth exploring. I think it has possibilities.

Yeah but this time there’s a whole bunch of federal judiciary on the story. They seem rather upset for some reason. One of them threatened to put Gale Norton in jail for ignoring him, I am not kidding. Emptywheel and Josh Martin both think this is a major factor in the pugegate story at DOJ.

I’ve been following the ‘Indian Trust Funds’ story for a long while and I agree, I think the chickens are finally coming home to roost!!!
If HoJo speaks of himself in the 3d person, he is only following in the footsteps of Richard Milhous Nixon, who did the same. Lots of parallels there!
I understand I won’t get anywhere with trying to reason with the Republicans. And I also understand that I will do better pushing my own party. Push ‘em. Push the Democrats hard! Really hard.
Lying us into war is tough to prove. Bush claims he was as fooled as those who gave him authority to invade Iraq. Violating the Presidential Records Act is pretty clear cut. The rule of law may still mean something to the man and woman in the street.
The Democrats don’t want to impeach because they believe they will lose. They may be right, although Republicans may be sufficiently repulsed by what the trial reveals to realize Bush and Cheney have to go.
It’s a turf war. If Congress doesn’t act, it won’t have any turf. If impeachment loses, how are the Democrats hurt? We would be no worse off then we are today, perhaps better off because Bush and company would know the Democrats are not afraid to act and might do so again.
Liberal blogs congratulated themselves on their power after the 2006 win. The proprietors of Move on.org purportedly boasted they own the Democrats. Is there any way left to us to get those bozos we elected to act?

Impeaching will just harden the Repub opposition such that NOTHING will be done. As witness, I give you all the so-called honest and upright (I know, I know) Repubs on the House Judiciary Committee who keep falling all over each other trying to say nothing is happening.
Or the same idiots on the House Oversight committee trying to derail Waxman and his investigations by continually bringing up But, but, but Clinton; but but but Gore; but but but but Sandy Berger; but but but Valeire Plame lied to us; and so on ad infinitum.
They are no longer capable of doing anything resembling independent thought and action and are purely in the mode of protect Bush/Cheney/Rove/Abu/whomever

Thanks. I THINK my personal pc can do this (can’t use work ones for obv. reasons). I’ll look at it next week. Do you REALLY have to use a videogame controller to interact in the VR environment (I SUCK at video games. A blind hamster once beat me at pong, and I’ve never been able to get over it…)
Okaaaaaaaaaaaay! My fav post at the moment is: Everybody’s talkin’ about health-care…and…
It’s very illustrative of the political fact that ‘the people’ and their interests are very low on the things politicians are interested in. When for 5 of the last 15 years 90 fukin’ percent of those polled say health-care is fucked yet….
Absolutely nothing is done to address the problem…
We’ve got a bigger problem than just ‘The health-care crisis…’
Don’t we.
My solution?
That of the dread and terrible Kos.
Replace everyone, every single person, in the Congress with folks who will do our bidding. The ReThugs did it.
We can too.
The difference?
We will put people in office who are not only progressive but also competent.
Number Of African-Americans Joining The Military Plunges 38 Percent
WASHINGTON — The number of blacks joining the military has plunged by more than one-third since the Afghanistan and Iraq wars began. Other job prospects are soaring and relatives of potential recruits increasingly are discouraging them from joining the armed services.
According to data obtained by The Associated Press, the decline covers all four military services for active duty recruits. The drop is even more dramatic when National Guard and Reserve recruiting is included.
The findings reflect the growing unpopularity of the wars, particularly among family members and other adults who exert influence over high school and college students considering the military as a place to serve their country, further their education or build a career.
Walking past the Army recruiting station in downtown Washington, D.C., this past week, Sean Glover said he has done all he can to talk black relatives out of joining the military.

And the ugly truth gets uglier. I imagine ChimpCo’s response will be to outsource more jobs.
Alfred, if you’re interested in second life, give jayackroyd a holler next time you see him on. He’ll walk you through an orientation. Something wasn’t working properly when I was on, but the whole thing comes in many languages. If you think about it, ask if English speakers can speak with-say-Japanese speakers…is there a translation capability. It would be cool if we could speak with others from around the world.
Alfred Kelgarries @ 145
that draft you feel is the fastest way to bring this madness to an end.
Al, you use the up and down and sideways arrows to navigate.
Interesting post at myDD yesterday- Obama and Immigration
~~Writer: The crowd was with him in the begining. Obama began speaking about immigration in very human terms. He pointed out that the undocumented workers were here, contributing to communities across the US.
Obama: And there’s another issue we must confront as well. Today there are 12 million undocumented immigrants in America…it doesn’t mater where that person came from or what documents they have. We believe that everyone, everywhere should be loved, and given a chance to work, and raise a family.
Writer: Then his rhetoric took a sharp turn.
Obama: But we also know that this is a nation of laws and we cannot have those laws broken when more than two thousand people cross our borders illegally every day. We cannot ignore the the very real concerns of Americans who are not worried about illegal immigration because they are racist or xenophobic, but because they fear it will result in lower wages when they’re already struggling to feed their families.
Writer: Obama went on to say that the 12 million undocumented aliens living in the US should have a chance at citizenship by paying a fine and standing behind those who have taken the legal path to immigrate. He admitted that the upcoming debate in the Senate would be a difficult one and that compromise would be necessary to get anything done at all.
At that point Obama lost the crowd. The fevered ovations turned into muted polite applause. While he did get back some of the enthusiasm towards the end of his speech the Senator never managed to regain the fevered excitement and momentum he had built with the attendees. ~~~
@ 144 Number Of African-Americans Joining The Military Plunges 38 Percent
That not a new trend. IIRC over the past 5 years the percentage of AA in the military has dropped from 17% to at or slightly below the AA% in the general population.
A.Citizen @ 146
I wasn’t joking. A draft will be in place and sending teenagers (both sexes) to basic training by 2009 regardless of who wins the 08 presidency. Bush has ruined the all volunteer army and the only alternative is a draft.

late to the party but in response to pimping self;
I believe my best post this week is to have the democrats start asking the questions like so;
“we know the vice president can bug any room in the white house he chooses, how do we know he is not taping bedrooms and sex lives of the president or his guests?”
“how do we know the vice president isn’t watching Laura take a shower?”
“how do we know the vice president isn’t listening to Laura’s conversations?”
“how do we know the vice president isn’t spying on president Bush when the president needs secure conversation?”
“how do we know the vice president isn’t stealing bussiness secrets from guests of the vice president?”
you see this?
we need to raise the question and CONTINUE raising the questions and continue EMBARRASSING the NOTION that the vice president isn’t using his ability for vicarious thrills
And it’s one, two, three, four… what are we fightin’ for?

Obama-the-empty-suit. Talkin’ dumb shit about ‘the law’. Don’t wanna git hisself anywhere near NAFTA. Nope. Don’t wanna talk about the reason all those meskins be swarmin’ up heah.
It’s because they cannot survive economically down there.
But we cannot talk about that. Oh, fuck me, no…..
We gotta talk about nativist bullshit that has no bearing on the reality of the situation.
All yer good polite centrist DLC and DCCC folks want you to understand that ‘Free Trade’ is a universal good. That just because NAFTA destroyed the Mexican apple industry that that’s just how it ‘works’ and that if for some reason you lose your job to somebody in Thailand or China that, well, ‘it’s for the greater goos…’ ya see.
That’s all you are ever going to get from Obama…
Corporatist bullshit.

I was thinking that maybe there should be a two-year probationary period, during which their work is reviewed by outside people (say, a blind panel set up by the ABA, with five or seven reviewers, not all of the same political view). At the end of that time, if the panel says they can’t cut it – think Thomas! – the nomination is reversed. They’d be judged on both writing of decisions (clear? well reasoned? understandable?) and on their understanding of the laws and precedents involved (stare decisis comes to mind).
P J Evans @ 168
Interesting concept, but I don’t think it would fly politicaly. The SC isn’t about law, politically, it is about finding the intersection of law and reality. Brown vs BOE wasn’t about school stuff, it was about finding a way to start putting the 14th ammendment into practice in the daily lives of black americans. I was born into the dying days of segregation in Dallas Texas, and I was just old enough to realize what was at stake in those decisions.
So rather than try to legally judge opinions, the only resource IMHO is to accept the current barnacles/moray eels on the court, but emasculate them. And then lock down the change cycles so the next generation of rethug (or worse) pols can’t undo them. JM2C, YMMV, etc.

I’ve been following the ups and downs of folks trying to get set up in Facebook, hide their real names, set up Friends, and it occurred to me to suggest SL. I have been trying to avoid exploring it at work, figure it could be addictive and distracting from what I am paid to do. I am in higher ed IT, and should really dig into it for my own education. I just think it would perhaps address some of the issues folks have been having with Facebook, and be more rewarding.
And thanks for the welcome! This is rapidly becoming my favorite place to be in the evenings!

Trust me, you’ll love it. Despite our own set of prickly stuff, we are an amazingly harmonic set of people here. I personally thing its the feng shui that jane did with the sand gardens and the Ginko trees over below the cash bar.
(as you have noticed, we are cognitively creating our own “virtual lake”. It’s a team solipsism contest.)
Tullow announced the discovery of a large field of oil off the coast of Ghana this week. Many in Ghana are worried about the oil curse: countries with oil become poorer, and local agriculture and industry are destroyed. The Pentagon’s new Africa Command is setting up to control the entire Gulf of Guinea, all along the west coast of Africa. It talks a lot about diplomacy rather than intervention. But Reagan spoke of his African military assistance in terms of diplomacy, and that effort damaged every country it touched.
Alfred @ 169
I know, but I’m doing blue-sky, anything-that-might-work ideas. I think something like that, as an idea, might work to start discussions on how the nominees get picked and what kind of people are needed – the ABA ought to be involved, they can look at them and understand what their qualities are, better than most of us out here. (IANAL: how would I judge what I’d be seeing?) The next stage is the hearings, and until the Senators are willing to do their jobs (hint, hint, SJC) we’re pretty much stuck.
I did, actually, write a nice formal e-mail to Pelosi this afternoon, pointing out some of the reasons we need to impeach Cheney. Take him out, because (a) he’s breaking various laws and the Constitution, and (b) it doesn’t put Pelosi any closer to the White House.

And that is what you should do! I once wrote a letter on some stupid subject in my dod job, figuring it was a waste of time but wanting to put my views on record so I could stand looking at myself in mirrors. I was stunned a month later when the side I’d been supporting won the internal DOD debate, and I was absolutely floored when one of the top guys mentioned that my “pointless little memo” had won over the top general’s assigned deputy on the project. Once he bought in, the rest was just details.

Msmolly. I already DJ there part time as Mitsu Figaro. The problem is a bit of a conundrum. It takes money to get land to work with, and you either have to rent to someone or have the cash to own a sim on your own. PLUS the ability to work it or commisson friends to do so. Logistics are a lot to do if you want to go that far. A chapter for Firepups? If i knew more were doing so? I’d start up a group myself. But we’ve more people on Facebook, which is much easier an interface. Second Life is great, but there’s LOT entailed in it.
msmolly @ 184
Let’s do it together then! I’m tied up (at work!) all next week. Could we do it next weekend?
Granted, with the various techies and code monkeys that i know the Lake has? We COULD feasibly build it ourselves, once they get the hang of building and scripting. (i DJ becuase i’m a dunce about both aspects. There’s a niche for us all. But hey..i’d DJ our parties for the joy of it!)

Nevermind. the lake ate that answer.
The money’s fairly easy. The Lindex acts just like any currency exchange. I’m a dunce with numbers and i get it! I’d love ot have a virtual lake to hang out at. If the parties are anything like the ones in Caledon that i work at? Oh boy. XD
Teddy San Fran’s doing janis on Late Nite. linky.
Pelosi’s “off the table” remark may have been intended to be pragmatic and honest, but the repercussions were a disaster.
First, all the people who busted their asses to get out the vote for her and her newly elected majority collegues felt completely betrayed. Hell, if we wanted NOTHING to happen, we could have all stayed home.
Second, the Bushies saw her statement as an admission of weakness, encouraging them to push their corrupt and despicable agenda even further.
Third, there’s an enormous ethical (and logical) flaw in that kind of pragmatism and honesty. Bush, Cheney and Companies have clearly done many things worthy of impeachment. The proper response is therefore to impeach immediately, because THAT’S HER JOB.
From a political perspective it really doesn’t matter if the proceedings run right into the middle of election season, because again, it’s Pelosi’s responsibility to guard our Constitution from these sorts of assaults. Besides, impeachment hearings would finally expose to the American people just a fraction of the filth of this criminal regime. This dirty laundry is waaaay past rank, and it needs major airing out. What better time to rub the Republicans’ noses in it than election season?
Let them call it politically motivated, damn straight it is, but it’s a righteous political motivation. It’s time to set the table for impeachment, and reserve special seats for Dick Cheney and the organ grinder’s chimp, George Bush.
With a comment number this high, maybe no one will even notice, but I was a big fan of Steve Gilliard’s and not only wrote a little about him, I provided some samples of his work to show why he was so wonderful and will be so greatly missed. Sure hope the link works and that someone will check it out.

Nancy Pelosi is a smart woman on the right side of the issues except impeachment. Everyone assumes it’s because she fears impeachment will fail. She may fear successful impeachment more. In his heart of hearts, perhaps Al Gore didn’t want to be president. If the presidential bug had bitten him bad, he would not have chosen Lieberman as his running mate and he would not have been so condescending towards Clinton. If impeachment succeeds Nancy ends up president. That may be more than she bargained for, although as Jimbo says, it’s her job.
As for impeachment, it could succeed because Bush and Cheney’s violations of the constitution are so egregious, even Republicans may not be able to ignore them. I don’t think the no confidence Gonzales vote is comparable. That was meaningless show. Impeachment is the real McCoy.
Cheney claims his limbo status between executive and legislature puts him in a class by himself. If so, his claims of executive privilege were fraudulent. Bush’s signing statements for a handful of laws (about 16 investigated so far) inspired him to ignore one third of the duly passed legislation. That’s grounds. If it’s blow jobs that get Republican attention, we might investigate what Jeff Gannon did in the White House until 5 AM.
There’s no choice. We can do nothing (although that’s a choice) and hope to undo things in 2008 and also hope Congressional cowardice doesn’t inspire Bush to push the envelop into martial law. Bob Dylan says you don’t have to be a weatherman to know which way the wind is blowing. Even Republicans may come to know.
