"Anyway You Want It"

The Spin I'm In
|
Warning Extremely Obnoxious! (but to others, including myself, very funny).
In the last two weeks two friends of mine sent me a couple of YouTube videos that I thought were hilarious. They were both famous rock videos with the real music replaced by a bunch of pranksters. I first thought that this was the new YouTube trend (like lip-syncing was), but I found that these were done by the same people who are obviously ahead of the YouTube curve. When I conducted my crack investigation of who was behind this I came across the band Legion Of Rock Stars. I was bummed that I hadn’t heard of them before being that they are from LA and have actually played out live a few times. They’re not huge or anything but their video skewers are getting around. They’ve also invented a new approach to creating music:
Legion of Rock Stars (LRS) pioneered PURE PLEASURE, in which the band listens to original recordings of rock and pop songs on noise-blocking headsets, and then plays along. Freed from the shackles of practicing, the band is able to deliver PURE PLEASURE.
From what I can gather, the band members with headphones on can’t hear each other, but they can hear the original recording and voila! Cacophony ensues. No one is spared: Mysterious Ways by U2, Lay Lady Lay, Let’s Spend The Night Together and on and on. They’ve made 162 of these YouTubes!
I did a search on YouTube for Any Way You Want It.The results were quite interesting: of the first six videos only three real Journey videos came up. The other three were a lip-sync, a video game replica band, and the bastardized version by Legion of Rock Stars. These other three even were more “popular” than The Dave Clark Five’s song Any Way You Want It and the cover of that song by The Ramones with Eddy Vedder.
Personally, I find YouTube absolutely amazing for historical footage of bands and funny prankster stuff. But future music lovers curious about pop music history are going to have to weed through a lot of imposters and cyber junk to get to the real deal.

Unfair! Was here earlier but comments weren’t up yet.
Damn, they almost make MY voice sound good! (totally tone deaf here)
lol, excellent, pure pleasure!

Sorry, I had a glitch when I first posted it and had to redo something quick. That would be my fault. You may flog me as you wish.
I would classify LRS as “posers”. Not very good ones at that.
The Journey tune scares me. I know I’m gonna be hearing these tunes in the jukebox in hell.

Careful, dude - punaise in da house!
LOL

Stick around for late night and suzanne will take care of you. Trust me (rubs aching body part).
On topic (don’t faint, I do it every so often just to confuse you):
Cliff Schecter is starting a new progressive content video blog. Addy is here.
FYI.
Oy! Genius.
I’m partial to Tales of Brave Ulysess.
Good god. Best version ever of a Journey song!
Sorry, they make my head hurt.
Hi Donita, I was at the P-town film festival and they played “Serial Mom” at the drive-in, Rock on Camel Lips!!

It’s ok. Some people like to watch scifi series that have been dilettantishly redubbed by web-2.0ers with senseless texts. The term ‘comedy’ is very strechable indeed.
I think that’s what it’s all about.
I’m not too worried. Practise in using search engines and the ongoing development in ‘multimedial’ information retrieval will reduce misleading search results.
Channel Ocho Bumblebee Man @ 19
can you explain “multimedial information retrieval” or provide a link?
While not quite up to the Godhead that is Bad News, I can state from personal experience that Yngwie ‘unleashes the furry’.

Horrible and hilarious at the same time. It’s strange how the facial expression of Mr. Jones fits to the voice.
Anyway you shouldn’t show so much amusement here. Next thing you know, you find yourself fallen victim to Legion Of Rock Stars as well. …come to think of it, someone should suggest that to the band. :-)
OT: not a news dump item but this is from CNN Firefighters inhale while fighting pot fire.

You’re right. I was referring to text based information retrieval, not ‘multimedial’ (Multimedial would be if you hum a melody and the computer looks for songs that might fit. Or if you draw a picture and the computer searches for pictures with similar motives. This isn’t technically mature yet. And slightly off topic. Sorry for bringing it up). Anyway meanwhile there’s quite a sophisticated structure behind text based search engines compared to the simple string comparison done in the old days. The purpose is to rate the results in relevance. My point was that with a little patience it’s still possible to find relevant information, even if there’s a bunch of useless stuff tagged with similar keywords.

This reminds me on a mission in GTA San Andreas. Sure it’s true?
Channel Ocho Bumblebee Man @ 25
whew. i’m a sysop but my boss writes tech books as well as doing it consulting, and i’m always on the lookout for new technologies for him (and the firm). One thing that I think is significant is that improving search, up to and including multimedial capabilities, will be the next major advance on the web and may drive web 3.0 the way non-server interactivity drives web 2.0. Reason? search is where the money is! The faster engine that delivers the most relevant results will get the traffic. The others will die on the vine or become niche players. There’s a reason google keeps snapping up every bright mind it can find. they aren’t safe yet.
And of course the 800 pound gorilla in the room of search is the precision/recall graph from so long ago. We STILL haven’t beaten that thing, and don’t look to anytime soon.
Oh gawd
Gotta find it gotta find it. Please, god I’ll be good

Hope is possible. Bliss. I second that emotion.

Hi, Donita!
I fall of the chair of the computer watching at these videos! Very funny!!
Here in Brazil, a heavy metal band, Massacration, began as a comedy program, but now they are a “truth band”… They make a very funny sound! They don’t make covers of other bands, but, they play songs of the own band. See the video to laugh enough:
Massacration - “Evil Papagali”
Donita, changing the subject… Some days ago, I knew that you went to the show of CSS in Los Angeles! I found the video in YouTube and some photos also! I liked a lot!
CSS and Donita Sparks - “Pretend We’re Dead”
Congratulations for supporting the bands of Brazil! I hope that my band will play with you in Los Angeles some day! =D

When I conducted my crack investigation
LOL already.
I conducted a crack investigation once but my neighbor got all skittish and ran inside his house as soon as he saw me.
very funny stuff… I love youtube but I hate that you’ll find a lot of shit before really find what you’re looking for… one of the reasons that I hate digital cameras and cellphones with cameras… people are recording bad quality videos and posting a lot of crap on youtube… and what about just enjoying the show? no they get their cell phones and keep recording awful videos and then they want to share all that shit… but LRS is not the case of course, LRS is a real cool stuff possible thanks to youtube… I loved the good the bad and the ugly! …and you Donita, rock on!

Ritchie Blackmore, right on!
FYI, new thread
Mr. Koch upstairs.
One of my favorite bands on YouTube seems to be using a blurring effect so you can’t really make out their faces.
Not sure what to think about this…
Sorry I am late to the party.
Listening with my eyes closed they remind me of another band I love, The Shaggs.
It’s Halloooow-ween!
Donita - I LOVE THIS!!! Thanks for sharing the weirdness.
“Paperback Writer” is incredible.

Okay, that is just WRONG on SOOO many levels!
Funnier n snot, but it HURTS to see Neil Schon lampooned that way.
Aragon High School, San Mateo, CA.
1970, he was 16-17 and a sophomore.
Left high school to tour with Santana in the middle of the school year, and ended up in Woodstock.
We used to party with him in The Highlands . . . even us OLDER guys, cuz he’d always break out a git and pick loud, and others would jam. And his folks let us smoke pot and drink beer!!! ;-)
And Greg Rolie is STILL one of my fav keyboard players of all time, along with Mark Naftlin . . .
Sigh . . . great hair, too, all of them . . . . *G*
