Iraq Study Group regrets not stuffing Giuliani into a sack filled with angry weevils when they had the chance.
Oh good. America’s Mayor Rudy Giuliani says it was a mistake to join the Iraq Study Group because of his “busy campaign schedule.“ Yeah, the good bud of the a-hole who brought us this catastrophe — and linked it to the September 11th attacks — just couldn’t be bothered. From Kagro X:
“How much of a prick is Rudy Giuliani? So much that he basically got fired from the Iraq Study Group by James Baker because he never went to any of the meetings. And where was he instead? Cashing in on his 9/11 celebrity class.”
Now just think of the SCLM outrage if instead of Giuliani it had been a Democrat:
Money more important to B. Hussein Obama than national security!!
Hitlery says screw the troops — what’s in it for me?
Xlinton cashing in on terror attack!!
Troops dying in Iraq small change compared to {insert Dem name here}’s pocketbook!
I don’t know whom I’m more disgusted with.

Ah, the quote marks are missing from your html on the links which is why they’re visible…
Whoa…that’s the closest I ever got.
And that was after I refreshed my Bella Serra Pinot Grigio. :)
NYFD will hose his fire.
Rudy was too busy hanging out with the pedophile priest to attend the ISG meetings. Prioriteis, you know.
oh, so THAT’s what html is……sort of like underwear?

my my my – i go away to get my rhum and fresh lemon – lo and behold – a new thread…. mother needs to pick up the pace and fast LOL
Hey, Maru dared come back! Great pic.
Mentioned this on a thread hours and hours ago, so if you saw this already please forgive.
Just got my IAFF magazine yesterday, and Rudy is the coverboy this month. The headline is “The Real Rudy — Firefighters and families rally against Giuliani”, and the IAFF has also released a video to its members entitled “Rudy Giuliani — Urban Legend”
Why, why, why was Giuliani invited to be in the Iraq Study Group? I want to know. He has no experience about Iraq. He has no military experience. Iraq had nothing to do with 9/11. Iraq had nothing to do with anything to do with him at all….Why? Why? How put him in the study group in the first place????
I want to know. Why????
Rats. Yes, I’m a NOOB!!!
Here

BTW, anyone who hasn’t read up on the work history of that priest ghouliani hangs with should do so. This piece of work wasn’t content to do his personal stuff, no, he had to figure out a way to screw the kids and their parents FINANCIALLY in the abuse lawsuit settlements by pretending to be on their side as a counselor while not disclosing he was, in fact, the attorney for the bishop being sued. He then FLEW AROUND THE US giving seminars to other dioceses on how to work the scheme themselves. Just lovely.

Maru, if you can edit the post, stick quotation marks after the first equals sign and immediately after html. Repeat for the second link. And I have no idea why the blockquotes didn’t work correctly.

Maru, don’t let these guys fool you. we were ALL N00B’s at one time. nobody is born knowing this stuff….except maybe steve jobs…hard to tell…
I am beginning to think that the physical resemblance between Giuliani and Nosferatu is not a coincidence.

Not him either. Woz was the techno weenie.
y’know, I’m usually never one to tempt fate or murphy’s law……but at this point, I think it is SO f******g obvious that Rudy is finished as a presidential prospect — DONE……deleted, concluded, over, stick a fork in’m, archived, recycled, purged from the database — that the pile-up of sordid wreckage that surrounds him is actually kind of fun to watch. In a rubbernecky sort of way.
Ed*ard Teller @ 22
Thanks! I’m going to try this again… I’ll do a nice short one from earlier today. Fingers crossed…

until he flew his damn hangglider into a mountain. that little accident brought us Steve Jobs AND Bill Gates. I’ve never quite forgiven him for that…
Not living in New York, I do not really hate Rudi, but he does use “9-11″ as a theme. Conspiracy or whatever, is the story that Bin Laden chartered planes to fly his family out of the US, true or not?
See, all fixed already. Suzanne stands on her diving board, both arms up in a V for victory position, and turns (with a warm smile on her face) to face first the fans on the left, then the fans on the right. Crowd is applauding wildly!
oddmommy @ 24
Well besides the legacy of Abner Louima, Amadou Diallo, and Patrick Dorismond, it is really only a matter of time before Rudy goes sub-orbital on someone in the press or a potential supporter who dares quesiton him about something. Then the Ferret Man will be visible for all to see.

Some thoughts about why blogging matters–especially when it comes to making sure the angle presented by the corporate media does not go unchallenged. Ended up being a bit of a walk down memory lane to recall an example of local media bias. It may have seemed rather mundane, but it potentially had a negative effect on the lives of ordinary people.

steve jobs was the business manager at apple, while steve wozniak was the tech genius. just when things were taking off, about 1984, steve woz flew his hang glider into a mountainside and was almost killed. he had to give up all his work, and hasn’t actually worked since. he has clear brain damage (which everyone carefully ignores) and is basically a shell of the man he was.
To the point: i was an apple club member since the first apple ][ came out (notice I used the right symbols? :)) and he came by just before the accident and said that he was developing the apple ][ X with both a motorola and intel chip inside, could boot CPM or Apple DOS, and would have CGA graphics (a huge deal back then) and a lisa-like UI (which ended up in the mac). If he had kept that going, pc’s would never have happened and the mac would be a very different machine. More importantly, Bill gates would be hacking basic from his daddy’s basement rather than strutting around the world like he owned it, the little thief.
my prof, in said tag ref.
You definitely have a way with words, Maru.

Guess we’re being told that September is off the table.
Jane challenged us to join facebook in greater numbers than those at MYDD and Crook&Liars, I think. Maybe Suzanne can provide the link to Jane’s challenge. Her idea is that we need to better understand the social tools on the web young people use to interact with a younger segment of the population and to underststand web-based social dynamic trends – and some other stuff. If you don’t have a free facebook account, you’re not part of this thingie.

Rudy bailed before he knew what the ISG report was going to look like. The ISG in practical terms was worthless. What made it important at the time was that it gave Bush bipartisan political cover to begin a withdrawal from Iraq. Instead he began his futile and doomed “surge”.

Petraeus isn’t dumb. If you read the force-ratios section of his treatise on counter-insurgency, it would take well more than twice our current troop level to do what we are trying to do. From the beginning, he gave “the surge” a one-in-four chance of success. Petraeus is perhaps greedy and/or immoral for accepting his current assignment, but another star will make a significant difference in how he and his family live in retirement.

Computer tech stuff, like car stuff, generally makes my eyes glaze over……but I read your post to mr. oddmommy, and fwiw he offered the rebuttal that the reason for microsoft’s success is that they were able to negotiate exclusive licenses with hardware manufacturers, whereas Apple was unwilling to license the software for use on other machines.

There is a simple algorithm to explain what will happen in September when Petraeus reports.

ET, you have some gorgeous pics there! Thanks so much for sharing!
(waving to spidey from the Mod Hammock up in the Mod Tower)
Frank33 @ 223
DAMMIT! THAT’s who he reminds me of. And this ghoul is actually in charge of our national security. Kinda like putting ted kaczinski in as chief ordnance disposal officer…
Ed*ard Teller @ 220
I have a tooth grinding crush on the right.
sobbing loudly – wanna be facebook friend
Jane Hamsher @ 212
Thanks.
Does the iLike thingie allow me to post sound files, Suzanne?
spiderpaws @ 216
spiderpaws, are you dressed warmly tonight?
juslin — if you’re already in Facebook, click on my name above and add me ;-)
LoudounLib,
Inhofe and Coburn are my Senators, and the front office of an Oilfield truckin’ company is a dangerous place for a liberal to tread. But I like it that way.
I’m just glad competent oilfield winch truck drivers are rare and valuable, or I’d be a run-off sumb*tch. They got me riled up and turned loose with both barrels, laughing the whole time.
*Waving to Jane*
If you haven’t yet read Blood Meridian, now’s the time.
Last man left standing is Judge Holden — the spitting image of Dick Cheney.
Hey TexBetsy – how can I find you on facebook? or should I just send you my way?
I haven’t played with the iLike thingie yet (getting ready for the open house, hanging at the lake and reading Dr Hillhouse’s book) yet. I think it does, ET.
yes, outside last night BUT no more! – at least not until baby season is over…not wanting to spend the rest of the summer raising a possum again. The moms are notoriously careless
LOL to OFG, I hear ya. I have the best of times and the worst of times here in VA with Webb and Warner!
juslin @ 233
D: turn that frown upside done :D
Mutant Poodle @ 238
I am on Suzanne’s. And a bunch of others. Betsy G M.
juslin @ 233
go to the FDL group. we are all there. click on a person and go to their page, then click on make a friend or some such. Hell, if ET lets me be his friend, he can’t be TOO picky…:>
Roo-DEE
The hero of 9/11.
The man who personally rescued hundreds? Naw
The guy who directed the efforts that resulted in saving hundreds?
Naw
The man who spent years talkin about how great he was? Yeah.
He’s right up there with the guy who spent 30 seconds with a bull horn tellin people how swell things were gonna work out.
People are SOO fuckin stupid!!!
spiderpaws @ 240
okay, you’re making me ask it right out.
Did you get skunked?
rwcole @ 246
A-men.
TexBetsy @ 167
Congratulations! Who am I to question the teens?
:-)
Bob in HI
juslin @ 233
I’ll be your friend.
Ya’ll should follow the LooHoo model of facebook name – she uses Terry LooHoo Olsen, with her FDL name as a middle name. Pun Aise is another way of letting us know how to match up FDL names and Facebook names.
face reddening – uhh i just registered now i’ll try to find the lakers…..
MP — look at suzanne’s friends. I am Betsy (and then my initials)
Mutant Poodle @ 239
her pic is from her salad days
juslin, lots of links of thread to fdl group and fdler’s pages. have fun and don’t forget to add me, suzanne twoton
Jane Hamsher @ 212
Technically challenged. Have set up a facebook account (I think) and joined fdl–now what?
TexB @ 244
done
Elliott @ 250
Me too!
..actually loohoo, it is quite lovely here tonight and barely a sweater is needed but will just sit next to the open windows with the lights out and sniff the breeze…am tempted of course, childhood name was wild thing
Elliott @ 254
My son made that portrait of me when he was little! And didn’t want to eat lunch!
Mutant Poodle,
It means Republicans are gearing up for ‘08.
TexB @ 258
Ditto.
spurious @ 255
go to the FDL group page and click on the total members (400 plus). go down the list and start sending friend requests to everyone you recognize. after that it’s really easy. my daughter has been giving me lessons…
Who better ta protect you from terrorists than Roo-Dee and Clusterfuck- the two who were on duty the last time we got the shit kicked out of us.
Why would anyone think that these two could protect us from a fuckin SPITBALL?
I just don’t fuckin get it!
rwcole @ 245
not my friend D:
LoudounLib @ 242
yeah, and I’ve got Mr. “Moderate” Tom Davis for a congresscrawler.
bleeeaagh…..
I’m guessing that out your way you probly have a repub too, LL?
Currently I’m in FB under my real name, but if any current or new members would like to add me, just click my handle above. I keep trying to change my name to include my handle, but so far no good!
rwcole @ 264
Zell Miller?
oddmommy, yes — we’ve got Frank Wolf.
LoudounLib @ 236
I’d like to be your friend, Juslin. Wish I knew how to invite you on my facebook page!
no skunking for me, was spared
spiderpaws @ 270
thank goodness. i was worried (really!) never happened to me, but my mom got zapped back in 1941 and she NEVER let us forget about it. I gather it was truly horrific.
juslin @ 233
All you gotta do…
TexB @ 260
and you know I love it!
spurious @ 256
I’m challenged too! (see above) Started to join but was too intimidated by the requirements/options. Like — do I need to have a photo? Or can’t I dig up a nice cartoon sketch of wilma flintstone and use that?
You may have mentioned this before but I notice Mitt is having trouble with his sidekick, the state trouper impersonator?
sorry no linky
oddmommy, join us! Seems like you can put up whatever photo you want, or none at all.
oddmommy @ 275
Perfect. And use Wilma in your name.
Loo Hoo. @ 270
We’re trying to add a function where there’s an icon that takes you to someone’s facebook page next to their name when they comment. Sounds like it should be easy, but will actually require beefing up our servers.
But we’re working on it.
oddmommy @ 275
Yep, that’s what Pach did.
Momma givin’ directions.
Question–a quote relating to marriage–
I refuse to join any organization who would have someone like me as a member.
Is that by Woody Allen or Groucho Marx?
oddmommy @ 274
My “photo” is a LOLcats image of HAL the computer from 2001. Facebook will accept almost any input and not care as long as you don’t abuse the system. Don’t be intimidated, LIE! Make stuff up! They are not a bank, they’re a flipping hookup web site. they make money off the ads they plaster everywhere in exchange for a few simple web services. we have the right to feed their input system fairy tales (no therapod jokes please…)
Groucho.
Oilfieldguy @ 281
I think it was Woody quoting Groucho. Annie Hall.
spiderpaws @ 275
and it is THE SECOND TIME said flunky has pulled this stunt. The police get peeved when you do that, they really do…(i had linky, but am too sleepy to go find it…)
Alfred Kelgarries @ 282
“Open the pod-bay doors, Hal.”
I have always wanted to say that.
Thanks!
(waving to AK, way late in the proceedings — I just love it when you’re around the Lake!)
Great place to start when first using Facebook is the FireDogLake Group – register by doing the bare essentials – no need to join a network or post a picture – you can do those later.
Then go the the link above and just start clicking on names, adding FDLers as friends. Confirmation notices will be sent to those people saying so and so wants to add you as a friend.
I’ve been confirming as fast as I get the confirmations in tonight.
Oilfieldguy @ 281
The Great Groucho Marx said, “I refuse to join any club that would have me as a member”
Isn’t Wilma the pet name for our lady of concentration camps Maulkkkin provided by TRex?
newtonusr @ 285
I have the greatest enthusiasm for the mission, Dave.
LoudounLib @ 286
aw shucks, LoudonLib, ah’m just an old, worn-out bit jockey slowly de-rezzin up the IO towers….
Daisy, Daisy, give me your answer do….
Woody quoting Groucho, shit that’s priceless, linking before the innernecks. I figured I somehow butchered the quote, but close enough I guess, thanks all.
Suzanne @ 251
Suz gets credit. It is tricky trying to match up the real name with the FDL name sometimes. Fun, but tricky. If you haven’t already become a friend, please do. It’s a wonderful group of people. I love love my family and friends, but sometimes they just don’t get it, know what I mean?
oddmommy @ 292
what I loved, in 2010, was the way they ended up blaming the White House for the security override that made HAL homicidal. Roy Schneider slams his fist on the panel and says “The F*cking White House!”. How very prescient of him.
And BTW, I have both Lisp and Prolog. HAL could be built today if we wanted to, but our computers don’t use the vocal HCI and we have moved out of the rule-based goal seeking heuristics for more of the back propagation genetic algorithm sort of stuff. But HAL wasn’t fiction, it could really have existed.
tw3k, if you’re still here — check yer wall ;-)
rwcole @ 264
I might have to join the NRA. Maybe they were right all along…*G*
LoudounLib @ 267
Go to profile.
…never thought of lying but you’re right, who will know?
dogs don’t know it’s not bacon
did that, Loo Hoo, I guess FB is maybe overwhelmed with all of us DFHs at the moment ;-)
LoudounLib @ 297
i appreciate it, takes :)
Alfred Kelgarries @ 263
Thanks, AK. Ok, adding friends. Tedious! Why can’t I just say that all fdl are friends?
spiderpaws @ 299
they know. why do you think they crapped in your shoe the next morning?
to change facebook name:
on your main page near the right top is my account
click on my account
scroll down to the bottom for CHANGE NAME
type in the new name and follow the directions.
I try to stick with my psuedonymn everywhere I post. No one knows me otherwise. Odd, huh.
oddmommy @ 275
spurious — click my handle above, add me as a friend…quick ‘n easy ;-)
spurious @ 302
because FB isn’t set up for adults. It’s for teenagers and young adults in small groups. we may actually crash their servers if we work at it…(evil grin, then slaps self on face and returns to moral center.)
Oilfieldguy @ 281
WC Fields
Oilfieldguy @ 306
works for me
i think my daughter will have to help me to get in facebook – believe i am not this damn dense lol and i got a 404 on trying to get to new thread :(
OFG, just register as Oilfield Guy.
I just added someone as a friend. Spurious, was that you?
OK, need to do that sleep thing. Gettin’ up early tomorrow, for a Saturday.
G’nite all. I feel well befriended.
juslin @ 233
Hey, I’ll play. What’s yer FB name?
You can find me.
Bob in HI
Oilfieldguy @ 305
actually, i think it may be rather profound. psych and semantics ain’t my specialty, but IIRC names encapsulate in many ways the way we see ourselves; but in our system we are given our names before we have any unique elements of personality. So the “handle” one gives oneself after forming an identity in life is in many ways a “true name” rather than the collection of relatives names printed on a birth certificate.
Ghod, did I just write that? I think I’m losing it…
Night MP.
g’night MP, sweet dreams!
WTF???
Mutant Poodle @ 315
Good night MP.
it’s enough I get over here and say a few things, not just enough, it’s a miracle
juslin @ 311
no, this is the official FDL 404 club right here. we are all 404 refugees tonight. Fortunately the bar is well stocked, the potties haven’t backed up yet, and TRex and Pach have started catching fish for breakfast. we may live.
juslin @ 311
juslin, that 404 was an FDL error – new post went up that should not have because it was a draft. Was not you at all :)
Mutant Poodle @ 314
you are, mp, you are. sleep well.
ok heres my prob – i typed in fdl as my group – nothing – zip nada…my kid will figure it our in the morning or should i say later this AM…
Alfred Kelgarries @ 317
Even when one’s handle is a simulacrum used in a fantasy RPG based novel that rebels against her makers and gains herself a spirit and soul? *giggles* (yes, my handle is NO relation whatsoever to the Alias tv show, i had it years before it was on air)
AK: WHAT ARE YOU SMOKING?
NewDealFarmGrrlll, now I see it was you I just added — welcome!
spiderpaws @ 321
a nice miracle. I loved your liveblogging the wilderness. Takes me back to my happiest moments of childhood and young adulthood. thank you for that.
spiderpaws @ 327
I don’t smoke. My shrink gave me prozac for the first time today. I can’t tell the difference. Can you?
juslin… you need to click on the link that says firedoglake – not fdl – that link is several places on this thread.
LoudounLib @ 308
Done. Good, not quite friendless! Still haven’t gotten to ET’s pictures, though.
spiderpaws @ 300
I went for a late nite Pizza at one of the chains in downtown Toronto with some friends
and ordered 2 large Pizzas for all of us to share.
Suddenly I realized my muslim friend hates Veggie Pizza, and the second one had Ham,
so I quickly went to the cashier and said, “Hey, if you haven’t already made the second Pizza,
could you leave out the Ham, my friend is muslim!”
“Don’t worry”, sez he, “It’s made from Chicken … I’m muslim too!“
juslin @ 327
in the search box, type firedoglake.
Oh and add me ..) here
takesthanksfor a change i’m not sleepy and am all gung-ho to try to hang in here for awhile lol cuz i’ll not be online next week – travelling to in-laws – no access to PC…
juslin @ 325
come back tomorrow when i’m not zapped by prozac hangover and i’ll guide you through it. I am literally too limp to do anything but type right now…thinking is out of reach,,,
on my goodness AK, get off that stuff and roll a joint
Did we lose ET in facebook land?
Your fish stir fry is ready. We WILL survive indeed.
thanks everybody – blowing kisses to all – i love you guys!!!
Chicken ham? I’m getting dizzy.
juslin @ 342
nite juslin
Suzanne @ 305
Tried to put NewDealFarmGrrrlll in the middle of my name, Facebook said too many capitol letters! My workaround–under name is an area to enter your status, i inserted my FDL name in that spot.
ES, I think ET is swimming upstream through a thicket of friend confirmations :)
Alfred Kelgarries @ 323
I believe this is the funniest comment here — are you ok?
spurious, I don’t see you yet :-( although maybe FB is slow ATM
spiderpaws @ 338
nope, need my security clearance to keep my granddaughter in Bratz and ghod knows what else…plus text messaging charges FROM HELL! The Telcos Text Messaging Charges are a license to print money…jeebus!
THC is probably better for you than prozac, but it aint legal yet…downside of bein in the spook/interpol biz…
…the prozac has stopped your conscious moral mind and let you access deep wells…this is only good for the first few hours.
Another work around – TRex uses that one, NDFG
TexB @ 341
Doesn’t that look fun?
Alfred Kelgarries @ 317
grin for some reason…
juslin @ 341
welcome to the lake. there is a REASON we hang out here. Ugly souls aren’t welcome, but we don’t yell at them, we bathe them in friendship and love. some get better, otherwise they leave.
Okay, folks, I may have to stage an intervention on myself in about a minute. I think my cortex may have fused…
i’ll be in S C for a whole week without my lake privileges – ohhh lordy and surrounded by my fundy in-laws to boot – i’ll be a basket case upon my return to normalcy – ok all GROUP HUG PLZ
Suzanne, why are you in a tower? Come down and join me in the Jacuzzi.
AK, I’m with ya on that — I’m verging on meltdown here (eyelids starting to slam shut)
spiderpaws @ 350
me thinks it would be an excellent conditioning tool….
juslin @ 355
No internet??? Want phone numbers? Sanity via satellite.
((( juslin ))) best of luck there!
juslin @ 355
Take care and condolences. See you next week.
…we here in California are permitted the odd drug now and then – by law. You would have to drop fifty pounds of hash on Highway 101 in Marin County to get busted.
juslin @ 355
Here you go, one big hug. Good luck with the fundies.
Tex, was kinda bumpy there for a while – threads going up, threads disappearing, I figured I should fasten my seat belt.
spiderpaws @ 362
Scuze me, spiderpaws. Last night you said shack. Tonight you say Marin County. Explicky?
Loo Hoo. @ 343
Yes, apparently it’s much cheaper than real ham and all the chains use it … here at least …
Eureka Springs @ 340
No, just around the lake here. Ms ET and I have been eating Friday night dinner – grilled local chicken, corn on the cob and green salad.
When I asked Suzanne if she wanted to see the solstice pics, I didn’t realize:
1) not anyone in the fdl group could see the stuff, ’cause I’d clicked the group as being OK
2) that Jane would be here. That was cool, because we may be pulling ahead of the other progressive blogs as we sit or stand here in front of our screens, and it was all her idea.
But I did realize, getting going on this, as Alfred pointed out above, that your kids can teach you how to do this stuff. That’s why we’re doing this – to communicate with younger people. Or, at least, to try harder at it.
slip slidin’ away here — good night all, it was tons of fun here tonight!
Christine Edmonson @ 346
yes, I’m fine. I had a really bad day yesterday and my boss and my shrink made me take a little anti-depressant today, an absolute minimum dose and it wore off hours ago. Now I’m high on caffeine and the fact that the B*st*rds that killed our guys in gaza just got firing-squaded themselves by the Hamas Police no less. They sent us the video but I refused to watch it. Bottom line, one of our employees who was killed day before yesterday there was the grandson of a very powerful turkish family. Turkey handles a LOT of money from syria, iran, the palestinians, egypt, etc. When the grandfather of the boy informed the syrian ambassador that if those yohos were’d dead in a day or so, all funds transfers from syria would be frozen until further notice, things happened. Sic transit gloria mundi, you might say. More importantly, Hams paid the boy’s wives $40,000 each blood money and they are getting permanent visas to Egypt or Turkey, their choice. So justice was done after all, just a bit faster than usual. Rule one in the ME: Don’t Piss Off The Turks.
juslin @ 355
You will survive — I just did it, remember, they are family. We’ve discoverd ways to avoid the whole political thing, and it was so hard. Cook your heart out.
Christine
LooHoo, not all residences in Marin County are MacMansions. Just like there are 3 bedroom 2 bath ranches in Beverly Hills.
Petrocelli @ 366
I knew about turkey ham, but I guess this is one just for the food service industry.
TexB @ 356
I need to wash my mind out with soap.
Night LL.
texb@359
i’m not taking my laptop as i’ll be staying with in-laws – there’s a phone and a tv and hope i can get c-span at least lol
AK, glad to see you are doing better tonight.
Oilfieldguy @ 373
Yes you do young man!
‘night DrD, have an excellent Saturday!
spiderpaws @ 349

Have a great weekend !

LoudounLib @ 348
You mean I didn’t do it right? But I don’t have a kid to ask!
Loo Hoo, I searched for you on facebook to no avail. Befriend me here please.
g’night Petro, you too! LL out…
Nite pups!
Suzanne @ 375
Thank you suzanne. see one of my posts here. justice and good works have been done, courtesy of the Turkish diplomatic corps. Life is wonderful. if passing strange.
Night OFG. Try to stay cool there in Okieland.
pontoon dreams, ofg.
Suzanne @ 376
JFC, Alfred! Remind me not to piss off the Turks. They did stand their ground against this whole fucking Iraq mess when they refused the 4th Infsantry Division or their equipment trans-shipment across their country back in February, 2003. If two other countries had done the same, who knows?
thank you Suzanne…LooHoo, go to marinrealestatebubble.com and you’ll see what it REALLY looks like here…tho actually they don’t show the rats.
Alfred, you are just fine the way you are
Ed*ard Teller @ 389
The turks aren’t saints, by any means, but they do have an amazingly low BS detection threshold. The PKK in northern Iraq has been screwing with them, assuming the US would protect them from Turkish retaliation. Oopsie. Wrong-O, Kurdy Loo. They don’t mistreat the Kurds that much, and are trying to do better. The PKK are bandits, plain and simple.
This is why I have said for twenty years, we need an middle eastern EU/NATO. Neither the EU or NATO is set up right to handle ME issues. but if we could merge jews and palestinians into one nation, integraged and federalized like the us or australia, and merge it into a Turkey-Palestine-Egypt axis with Jordan and Syria shoehorned in, it would go a long, long way to stabilizing the region. So we’ll see…
I really enjoyed my visit to Turkey a few years back, but never in my life have I seen such giant burly policemen, which was particularly notable in a country of relatively small sized citizens.
spiderpaws @ 391
what a nice person. let us say instead that i can at least supply a small amount of illumination even from my darkened depths.
404-I thought our flights were canceled. Are they? Wussup?
Aloha Ya’ll, I have a Living Room full of raging hormones, singing Karoke, and gorging on Cake and Ice Cream! It’s my Daughter’s 15th today! I hope the Lake isn’t as frothy as it’s here! 8-) By the way, Late,Late is early tonite!!!
Quinceniera?

Welcome to my life.

Oh. Dear. God. You poor man. You have my utmost sympathy. The good news is that this means she is that much closer to resuming sanity.

In the korean war, turks were chosen to patrol the front lines at night. they waited for the NK infiltrators to cross over, and then killed them, slowly, and took their ears. They then strung the ears on the barbed wire as trophies and warning to the next wave of infiltrators. The NK stopped trying to infiltrate after that. I wonder why.
Hi everyone! Briely delurking to say that and just to ask in response to AK#393, isn’t that more or less what Nasser was trying to do?
Eureka Springs @ 393

I feel terrible about this — I’m in the weeds. I was just trying to belong to Firedoglake.
RonD @ 402
lord no. my brain is too dead to explain that tonight, but the short version is that it was an attempt to scrape together enough weaponry to destroy israel. it failed. politically it was meaningless.

God bless, I have a little over a month to recover in time for my Son’s 13th!!! ;-)
Falling asleep. Off to bed. Night, all.

no, you’re fine. and belonging to FDL is a very wonderful experience, but we are a diverse group here and we don’t filter the raw reality of the world the way the MSM does. You’ll find posters here who have lost dear friends to the meat grinder in iraq and the cruel calculus of american HMO’s, the penny-pinching deceit of big corporations and the skulking depradations of twisted clergymen. What we all share in common is a desire for everyone to live free, happy, and in peace. And we have a long way to go.

Right after WWII, the Middle East wasn’t exactly a clean slate, but it seems to me that the combination of the ethnic cleansing of Palestine, the creation of Islamic republics and a Jewish state put the drive for what you describe on hold. A one-state Israeli/Palestinian solution is unachievable by any voluntary means. The hatreds may go no deeper than those in Northern Ireland between Catholics and Protestants, but I see only increasing intransigence, hatred and – especially among the Palestinians – total desperation, all the time.
Federal ideas in situations like you describe always remind me of the USSR, Yugoslavia and – yes- the pre Iran-Iraq war Iraq. The USA globally and Israel locally will not accept powerful cabals or alliances in their sphere which they cannot somehow dominate.
I’ve never seen you comment here about Sibol Edmonds…
I’m slowly relaxing after a 4 hour set today as a streaming DJ tonight. *yawns* Four hours of big band, swing and South Pacific themed music. I was originally contracted for 3, but they asked (and paid) for 1 more hour AND i got tips from the attendees.
Christine, you’ll also get disaullusioned media people too. But the one thing we all have is a fully functioning BS detector.
Petrocelli @ 421
Maybe after Grad School! But, I’m not holding my breath that she’ll be back! *g*
Alfred Kelgarries @ 412
I absoutely agree — let’s talk, and can we be friends? I mean, gosh, I’m a librarian. And, I’m afraid of you.
Petrocelli @ 414
It will not be easy. We need the following things to make it work:
1) Cheap, effective bomb detection systems combined with cheap, easily erected personnel control gateways. Think airport security but in a mall/pedestrian setting. They are ubiquitous but impersonal, and they work. once the suicide bomber is out of business, life can start to return to normal; I include vehicular bombs in this category.
2) Once people cannot blow themselves and others up to make political gestures, the next questions are housing and jobs. The modern distributed economy will provide the latter (palestinians are AMAZINGLY WELL EDUCATED. Women with Phd’s, real ones, scrub floors for a living. Gahhh.) The housing will take some doing, but modern prefab construction combined with various resource usage enhancements (green stuff) should make it possible. We will need desalinization plants, preferably solar-bassed.
3) An end must be put to all religious incitement to violence, and regrettably israeli religious leaders on the right are about as bad as some imams in this area. It has to be surpressed BY THE RELIGIONS, not the state. A hard nut to crack, but with economic pressure it can be done (by the parishoners, see the Celtic Tiger for details).
4) Everyone is a palestinian citizen, with a palestinian passport and DL and so forth. Jewish and Muslim enclaves have local autonomy for local issues. Palestine’s government is a federal one with parliamentary stuff like now but full palestinian participation.
5) A heavy hitter peace force must be stationed in the country to prevent violence from both outside and inside. Canadian, Aussie, Finnish, etc. With heavy weapons and rules of engagement that allow them to be used.
6) Blend together for 25 years and you’ll get a stable, free, peaceful, rich palestine. anything else ends up a radioactive desert cemetary.
hi late pups…..i am NEVER here for the lovely late night, too late/early for me……
just had a long dream, with lots of parts……..was a gathering at my house, (not my house now, but in the dream it was, kindof a combination of the houses i’ve lived in)……gathering was instigated by a friend……
lots of different kinds of people, and throughout the dream, through the people and what they brought, was revealed lots of my favorite things, each time a new one came up, felt this deep warmth and satisfaction, and was mostly little things………
then in the dream, someone started spouting off things i had said, (he was talking to an early teen child, telling stories about himself so i could hear and told one that was heavy, then went on to things dayna had told him, and it was someone i know, weird)so, he was spouting off things i had said, and got to this one, and i could picture how big it was and it woke me up……
focus on getting your dreams on what you want, then your life will provide what you need….daily….is self-sustaining because you have what you need in your everyday life to thrive……..because you are surrounded by things you want.
gonna write down the dream and go back to sleep……in a minute.
wow,
take care,
love,
dayna

I ordered one too! I have the record, about time I went digital with that classic.
aliasofwestgate @ 429
Ooh, did you play “I like coffee, I like tea”? I’ve got the java jive and it’s got me…
I think that’s how it goes.
Petrocelli @ 414
IMHO, jews will never accept a symmetric “law of return.” To them, “Israel’s right to exist” is “the jew’s right to dominate Palestine.” Prove me wrong.

I CHEFFED for Woz.
No lie!
Eddie Wozniack, owner of Messina’s in San Carlos, CA.
Passed hisself off as Italian, Computer Guru, and anything else it took to sell a glass of wine or a dinner or two . . .
He was one of the biggest pieces of work I’ve ever met . . . phreakin nutz, and fun, but totally self destructive to everything around him.
Damn this lake brings out the wierd shit in my life . . . oh, that would be TODAY, and this admin . . . wierd things, that is.
Nevah mine . . . nitey all . . . sum dim fun it will all be by the time the cart rolls around for breakfast . . . ;-)
Christine Edmonson @ 431
we are friends. Anyone who makes it through to the lake is a friend, by definition. And my dear wife, departed in 2005 after 43 years of marriage, started out as a librarian before becoming an irs auditor. So I’m favorably inclined to start. And you absolutely do not need to be afraid of me. I have never hurt anyone in my life, except by showing them a truth they didn’t like. Ideas are far far more deadly than guns or bombs.
I’m here most every day (hours vary). Feel free to talk to me as much as you like! I’ll only promise honesty in return, and maybe civility if life hasn’t been too ugly to me that day.
Margot,
No i didn’t play that one. But i had a mix of Glen Miller Ochestra, Andrews Sisters, Count Basie and quite a few other artists i’d dug up.
Boog It went over swimmingly, i might add.
its time for me to get to bed – i’ll be here til sunday so will be back on the lake later today – night all and a special g’night to texb ;o}

Damn, AK, you’re on fire tonite!!! You’ve obviously been drinking your protein shakes, bypassing all the Neocon Kool-Aid being dispensed!!!
wigwam @ 436
Have you lived in the Middle East?

Christine Edmonson @ 431
Stick around awhile … I’m in awe of AK … he’s an inspiration, like so many people here …
Petrocelli @ 442
No, but many of my friends and colleagues have.

Please let me do a mea culpa and note that I am not quite at my best, so some of my output tonight is not conveying what I want it to.
The era of imposed political solutions that you very correctly speak of is effectively over. It is simply no longer possible to enforce them on people and governments against their will.
And I agree that the decision to create separate jewish and palestinian states after WWII was a very bad idea, and has led to the modern contretemps.
But as has happened in NE, economics rules in the end. If a way can be found to offer both israeli and palestinian leaders economic security for their people in return for accepting political compromises that would otherwise be unacceptable, they may well do it. The economic carrot can overcome a lot of political stick as it were. It will take time, dedication and perseverence, but I think it can be done. And the local people must be the ones to do it, all us outsiders can do is offer ideas and our resources once the deal is struck.
About ms Edmonds, I knew of the case but don’t really see much I can offer. She was a fine lady who took the power structure at its word. She has learned, as many of us have, that this isn’t always wise or successful. I feel badly for her, but don’t see much that can be done at present beyond contributing to her defense fund and keeping the story alive. Have I missed something? (I think the FBI should have been disbanded when EJH dies. It’s only gotten worse from there.)

It seems that there are so many people who do not want a peaceful ME, on both sides.
My hope for peace in the ME went out the window when Rabin was killed.
Alfred Kelgarries @ 369
Once again, I’m sorry for this tragedy. The blood money is not much salve for this injustice.
As for pissing off the Turks, 100 years ago, Palestine was a province of the Turkish Empire. They know Palestine better than we do.

no, although thank you. I did this FOR A LIVING. We wargamed stuff you’d never think possible. And some of it has happened (included the fall of the SU, almost exactly as simulation EXD-9384 showed it would.) I stand on the shoulders of giants, wobbling slightly. :>
Anyone awake?
woah – I know this is off-topic, but I just got back from a completely news-free vacation. I have a question: when did the MSM decide that anyone blowing up anyone else in Iraq officially are designated “Al Qaeda forces?” I just read the worst piece of trash yet from the NYT (by John Burns), which repeatedly asserts that it’s all Al Qaeda, all the time.
time for a cocktail. Jesus.
Petrocelli @ 447
that and when that idiot Arafat broke his word to bill clinton. They had EVERYTHING they wanted, except Yasser being king of the ME. He said yes in private and no in public and then ran and hid. I’m sure he’s regretting that little stunt in the interlife as we speak. Tool.
Alfred at #432,
I love ya, AK, and I think your model would lead to prosperity, love and health, but here’s the developing narrative from the Israeli cybertech think-tanks:
Western nations have less than 20 years to prepare for the next generation of terror threats, according to Dr Yair Sharan, director of Tel Aviv University’s Interdisciplinary Centre for Technology Analysis and Forecasting.
These could consist of suicide bombers remote-controlled by brain-chip implants and carrying nano-technology cluster bombs, or biological compounds for which there is no antidote.
[snip]
We get a better-educated class of terrorists these days, he told the conference, while sci/tech advances can quickly find their way into irresponsible hands, or “proliferate” through the forces of globalisation. Not only that, technology is always smaller and cheaper, making it inevitable that bad people are going to get their hands on some bad-ass weaponry.
Most bizarre of all his predictions is “the recruitment of huge numbers of suicidal candidates – human bombs – by mind control techniques”.
Brain chip implants could create a more obedient servant than conventional techniques like hypnosis: “Imagine that this suicide bomber is remote controlled and cannot give up, even if he wants,” warned Sharan.
This might be some way off, though – Sharan estimated it would be more than 10 years. Within five years, however, we might be faced with terrorists armed with powerful new explosives delivered by robot. Even remote controlled toys might be used to deliver dangerous payloads into crowded places like supermarkets, he said.
Some of these payloads, also conceivably within five years, would be constructed using radical nanotechnology that could produce something called the MOAB, or Mother of All Bombs. Nanotechnology, which is made using components one billionth of a metre across, might also give terrorists the means to release malicious nanobots into people’s bloodstreams.

that is a subject of much debate tonight. are we really aware or not. Drinks by the pool, watch out for the 404 excavation crew digging up the server that ate Late late Late night. Burp.
ET,
Jeez. What were those guys reading? Stephenson’s The Diamond Age? *blink* That’s straight outta that book’s plot.

Violated and Rich is much better than Violated and Broke. At least their kids are out of that hellhole.
Attaturk was the key. If his successors could have just kept that magic going, the ME would be far far better off…
Alfred Kelgarries @ 452
I heard that Ehud Barak had never agreed to it, Jimmy Carter said as much …
I have a question.
Something sent out as a “legislative update” sent out by a freshmen congressional rep that is a campaign brochure instead. Per the rep’s office, this “update’ was sent to some 85,000 households. However, there are at the very least 120,000 voting households in this rep’s district, with perhaps as many as 150,000. Questions are being raised as to what list was used for the mailing? Only to contributors and supporters?
As an elected official can mailings via their legislative office be used for the official’s reelection campaign – at the expense of the taxpayer?
Wordsmith @ 458
Oooo- nice question. Lets see if any of the legal eagles are up to finding out the answer.
Suzanne @ 460
You expect Lawyers to leave a beach cocktail party and go to work?!! *g*
Wordsmith @ 450
Hello!
Loo Hoo. @ 462
Awake … Yes !
Aware … Can I get back to you on that ? *g*
Where the heck else would we be?
Alfred Kelgarries @ 449
Compliments of Shrub, our standing within the World is a reeling! I’ve participated in numerous Bde and Div level wargames, simulated and otherwise! I haven’t had the fortune of a Theater level one, although, I’ve witnessed them!!!
newtonusr @ 464
That’s right … Hockey doesn’t start ’til September !!! *g*
Petrocelli @ 463
Yeah – aware. That’s always the key. /smirk/
Petrocelli @ 466
There is, really, very little else.
Alfred Kelgarries @ 393
Well, maybe not so simple. You’re getting the Turkish viewpoint. Do you know any Kurds?
The Kurds are divided between Turkey, Iran, and Iraq. Turkey treats the Kurds like we treated American Indians 100 years ago, like forbidding them to speak Kurdish, and suppressing expression of Kurdish culture. The Great Powers after WW-I, when carving up the Ottoman Empire decided to divide Kurdistan into three pa
