Beautiful.
Lou Dobbs is really insane. What he’s saying now about the Catholic church is . . . In the area I live in CT, it is long-held tradition that the Catholic church will bring people in from troubled countries. They become valuable citizens. It is the Republikans and Lou Dobbs who are breaking with tradition.

Grew up with the railroad,

So glad you doing this and wish the best for:

dmac:

Sorry, whoever you are, but I don’t do a lot of commenting because I expect the posts to speak for themselves. Moreover, I’ve been on an extended road trip for 10 days with limited connectivity and can’t comment a lot.

Here are the details on Tony and Janina. Bottom line: She’s being deported because an immigration judge (if you’ve ever dealt with these judges, you would know that they can be nasty, tyrannical and answerable to hardly anyone) decided she wasn’t worthy of the asylum a normal person would agree she deserves; moreover, she played by the rules each step of the way and got screwed. Happens a lot in this universe.

Cathy’s white hirelings were paid standard industrial wage. The problem isn’t the wage she offered; the problem is the work ethic of spoiled whites who haven’t the stamina to do this kind of work. The whites she hired weren’t unhappy with the pay — they just didn’t want to work that hard all day.

I know something about this. When I was in high school, I worked on potato farms in southern Idaho hauling pipe. It taught me how to work, really work, and it was a valuable experience for me. But as a crew, we were unreliable (some of the guys showed up only half the time) and whiny and frankly, we didn’t do a very good job. Two years later (this was in 1976) I went back to visit my old boss at the farm and found that he no longer hired white teenagers; he had a crew of Mexican immigrants who worked their asses off, did a great job, never bitched, and were paid the same crappy wage ($1.25 a line, which consisted of 25 pieces of 40-foot irrigation pipe assembled in a row) as we got. I’m quite certain he still employs such immigrants.

Finally, I don’t write to answer every question that gets thrown my way because, like a lot of folks, I have limited time and capability to answer. That was especially the case this week, when I was trying to post using cellular uplinks on a mobile train that utterly vanished over extended periods of the trip, leaving me precious little time to even read the comments, let alone post.

Frankly, I deeply resent your petulance about my time and energy. Even at home, I have limited time and ability to answer everyone who comes along. This kind of demanding, self-centered shit is one of the reasons I pulled back on the frequency of my blogging.

Some of my folks came here on the trail of tears from back east long ago. Some did not make it to Oklahoma. We still hear and tell those stories. Thanks for the Miller thing. ;0)

Best train story for me is the story of the first NYC subway, dug out in the cellar of Devlin’s clothing store on Warren Street by Alfred Beach, in 1868. His invention was shown at a fair but it was turned down so he decided to build it without telling anyone…him and his cousins bringing out pail after pail of dirt while the city slept……until the NYT blew his cover. It was refound in 1912 when they were digging out was was supposedly the first NYC subway. A short story about it here….
