Go, Digby, go! I’m watching the clip now, but I think it’s awesome that she’s made the Big Time … superb analysis comes out of the Santa Monica bunker.
I hang my head in shame that it never even remotely occurred to me Digby might be a woman. I feel like someone’s just rearranged the furniture in my brain.

For someone “unaccustomed to public speaking,” that was a wonderful speech from top to bottom.
Left Blogistan already has a very strong group of spokespeople (Markos, Atrios, Jane, etc.) but I think Digby would be a great addition to the ranks of the “liberals who go on the radio/teevee and tell it like it is.”
Then again, I don’t want anything to take away from her super blogging… So, on second thought, get back to Santa Monica, Digby!
This gets to one of the most frustrating aspects of dealing with this administration. We keep expecting that they will be held accountable for lying, or breaking their promises or misrepresenting their policies or any number of other things we can file under the heading of WTF? But, because they are moving so fast and with such focus we simply cannot assess the damage before they are on to the next item.
They execute, they don’t plan. Their vision is a laundry list. They do not reassess their policy goals, ever, because they do not really have goals. They have an itemized agenda. And, they just keep moving. Like sharks. They don’t have regrets and they never question. They have faith that whatever their team is doing, it must be right and the most important thing is to GET THE JOB DONE.
That’s why this administration is so irrational and incompetent on every single level
These people are not natural leaders. They are natural followers. Like lemmings, they are following their instincts without knowing that they are all jumping off the edge of a cliff. Unfortunately they are taking us and the rest of the world with them.
Never entered your mind?
Okay, the part where I felt guilty, only a little, for all the Woo Hoo – I am woman, here me roar! So, never mind. Your admission of It Never Entered My Mind relieves my guilt.
Thank You.
I love how she also memorialized Steve Gilliard at the very end. The News Blog was where I first learned Digby was a woman (Steve wasn’t coy about pointing it out). Sigh … still missing the good Mr Gilliard.
Great speech. Reminds me why Hullabaloo is a daily stop on the inter-toobz.
Wow, I came to this post after watching Frontline. What a breath of fresh air. Digby’s speech was one of grace and joy for me. Thank you Jane for introducing her to me.
I feel so sorry for people in this country who don’t even know the netroots exist. Especially when I know that they have an internet connection. It is really sad to me.
Hey, what’s Duncan Hack doing up there on that Firedoglake video? Is he going to follow Eli over here? Are we going to be stuck in a never-ending open thread?
Watching Digby’s speech I could see passion, sanity, and intelligence, all in one person speaking. How rare is that? We’re lucky to have her, along with others like Markos, Duncan, our own Jane and Christy, the late Steve Gilliard, et. al. I didn’t know how hopeless I felt until I began to feel hope again. “Freedom soon will come, then we’ll come from the shadows.”
That was a baited hook I threw out there, and you took the line. Many, many times I drag my knuckles through the lake in a very modified spoof of the legendary Merkin Patriot.
I paint a target on myself as a representative of those who breed in the shallow end of the gene pool. Sometimes pups bark at me.
I’m actually tearing up because the rational, passionate voice of the left is FEMALE.
Often has been throughout history
Yeah, TexB, I think this is the swing of the pendulum. I give Fukuyama credit for this model, that the pendulum swings through human development in the opposite direction when it goes too far one way.
The opposite of an excessively-testosteroned cowboy-wannabe overgrown toddler is a firm-handed mother figure. Perhaps not a mother in fact, but a mother of invention, willing to correct and recreate the way back to sanity.
Still listening to the first clip . . Jane, Marcy and is that The Therapod?
How kewl!!!
What a beautiful group of patriots, one side to the other . . . and a good on at the podium, too . . .
Let there be hope.
Let that hope include the middle class and NOT be lost among the elite communicators in the blogosphere . . . let the voices of the blogs reach the masses . . . tell yer friends about the blogs, ask them to read them . . . or we are lost.
Good work all. An honor to view those clips . . . FDL rawhks.

I wasn’t doubting you. I was hatched in that end of the pool, but I have to believe in evolution.
You look at that group on the stage and you see America’s new media. What a proud moment for them all, and for us.
Boy, can Digby emote. With those glowering eyes when she mentions the destruction of America’s cherished Constitution, she intimidated me, and I’m on her side. Then for her to be surrounded on stage by the brightest stars in the progressive blogosphere –that is just icing on the cake. Great speech. And great video clip, Jane.
Let’s keep it for the to be built American Progressive Bloggers Library. Not only will we educate ourselves but educate as well the future generations of ourselves.
Jane, how perfect that you all chose Digby as the spokesperson for the progressive bloggers. It is such a treat to see and hear her “out loud.” Thank you for letting us look through the window at this event; you do us proud.
So we finally see who Digby is! That’s great and congrats to all for the award and to Digby for her great speech. I already knew that she was a woman; the “she” and “her” in reference to Digby was my first clue, but I had no idea where she was from or what she looked like. It really is good to put a face to a name. I was kinda hoping she’d mention Arianna at Huffington Post, for all she’s done to promote blogs and get you guys into the Libby trial, but I guess you can’t think of everything or please everyone in one short speech.
I notice that she mentioned Al Gore’s book, which I am currently reading. I wonder if anyone else got an odd feeling when the news came out that Bloomberg left the GOP today; I heard about the same time that he’s become friendly with Gore. I now can’t help but wonder if the two of them might be planning on turning politics on it’s ear here this fall or early next year. Third party? A winning ticket? Sure would like to know what others think about that?
When I finally talked Digby into having coffee two years ago she shot me an email the night before saying ‘I might not be what you expect…’ Boy was she right. I called TBogg and said ‘you’re never gonna believe this…’
Since then we’ve become very close friends and I often laughed when I thought of what people would say if they knew how girly ‘Digby’ could be. She’s a wonderful person and an amazing friend and confidant and I’m so happy everyone gets to see how aamazing she is for themselves now.
BTW it’s not in the clip but Ned introduced her. It was great, we all had such a lovely evening. I’m glad that thanks to video everyone gets to share in it.
You look at that group on the stage and you see America’s new media. What a proud moment for them all, and for us.
And yet, they are not the media; they are more effective for being “commoners”, citizens. The only things that set them aside from the everyday person on the street are passion, a strong sense of self-empowerment, and the ability to write coherently enough to convey their passion over the internet.
It bugs the snot out of me that the corporate media treat the left blogosphere as radicals located three standard deviations away from normal, when the truth is they are citizens who don’t need to be paid to hunt down and write about the truth. Look at them, scrubbed and shiny and sport-jacketed and lipsticked where applicable; flaming radical Stalinists? Hardly.

Okay, let me say it. I am so proud of our team. To name some names would be futile because the bench is so deep and wide and full. Just to be a part of it just busts my buttons.
I could not help but notice how supremely gracious Digby was deflecting praise to everyone.
At my computer reading Hullabaloo, FDL, Daily Kos, Huffpo and many others I have become a concrete person with a community. I have learned to listen, write, and think. When I move out into the tactile world it is with the energy of the netroots.
Thank you Digby for being the glue that sticks us all together.
I’ve thought for some time, and like so many others, that Digby was a hugely valuable thinking asset of the netroots. After (FINALLY!) seeing and listening to her, in awe, I hope even more fervently that some deep pocketed angel would give her all the material support needed so she would have no worries in that regard and had her time free to be a brain and a conscience on a full time basis.
My goodness if only I could be so ‘not used to public speaking’. Absolutely fantastic. It gives this Aussie great hope for the future of the US, which in turn affects us downunder too.
don’t want to be a spoiler, but I was under the impression all along that Digby is a woman. Not sure what it was that tipped me off though….
Even so, what a FANTASTIC reveal, and what an impressive panel. I am so lucky to be a part (miniscule part) of the progressive blogosphere! And now…let’s…take..back..America!!!
Digby is the
Icing on the cake!
(not sugar and sweet mind you, but the best part)
anyway, Congratulations to Digby for this award, I remember going to over many times from links from fdl, always insightful, deep, and thought provoking.
Well deserved.
OT: The NYT on the administration’s “debate” over whether to attack Iran-Glenn Greenwald……………Salon
It is, I believe, a positive development that The New York Times today has a front-page article documenting how active the debate is inside the Bush administration over whether to attack Iran. Perhaps the article will elevate the attention level paid to this very real and very dangerous possibility.SNIP
Sometimes I had the distinct impression Dibgy was a guy, and other times I was sure she was a woman. Mostly I didn’t care since Digby was smart, funny and knew how to verbally slice and dice the idiots of the right so well. But I’m really happy she’s on our side.
The Digby identity was revealed to me many many months ago. As a blogger, with a teensy blog that only my mom, brother and sister reads, publication of this identity would have given me traffic, but ruined the confidance of people I like.
I am glad Digby was given the opportunity to come forward on her own terms.

Is your handle about “cricket” – the second most fantastic sport in the history of man (Hockey is first !!!) or about that insect that one hears but never sees ? *g*

Yes, “anger is the only sane response.” But look at it from the other side. It is the “traditional media” who are looking, somewhat longingly, at the people on the stage. To have their passion again! And they know it is they who may be three standard deviations away from what they should have been. No, this is a transition moment, and they must sense it.
And wow, after hearing all of Digby’s presentation, I too am bawlin like a baby.
And Gilly is honored, right at the end.
Bless her, that Digby, bless her soul.
Ok, enuff verklemptia . . .
Which one was Drifty? Atrios? Kos?
And if I was right about TRex, then the three of FDL (well, I think of March as a FDL Pup) were looking GOOD up there . . . in honor, and honoring, self and others . . well done.
Damn, still got eyewet stuff to wipe off . . danm.
I WANT MY COUNTRY BACK!!!!!!!!
GIMME BACK MY COUNTRY!!!
Waiting for video to load. Now that Gilliard is gone, dammit, I hit Digby regularly……..glad to hear that she payed homage to the best of the best. She and Marsh, and Jane are powerful voices…..thanx to them all.
I come by everyday to listen to every one, this was treat to see what every one looks like and that there is light at the end of the tunnel. We just have to remember to never give up, because it will be a long fight and worth every minute.

I’ll agree on this: those folks on the stage have passion that is three standard deviations away or more than what the corporate media musters.
Sure, there are blowhards, but they blow hard, hence the name. They do not have the zeal to dig for the facts, double-check and refute anything that does not jibe with what they have uncovered. And those people on the stage are everything they aren’t in that regard.
Now if only we could find a way to undo the horror of excessive consolidation in media ownership, these folks could remake the world.

Gosh, I SO want to hear this and I can’t get the video to play. I’ve been “buffering” for an hour… I even went to Google Video and can’t find it. So sad! Can anyone help?
I’m glad that Digby got the award. She has provided such a clear voice about so many things.
Today I got a request from my local CBS station to comment on Andrew Keen’s new book The Cult Of The Amateur. I read the first chapter and I can see how he would not be in favor of Digby and all those dirty hippy pseudonymous bloggers.
He thinks that anonymous bloggers are destroying our culture!
More “anonymous” bloggers like Digby please.
Of course I mean pseudonymous vs. just anonymous.

lh,
Wouldn’t that be great? I’m so glad to see her. It was very fine of her to mention one of the finest bloggers, the late Steve Gilliard.
When I finally talked Digby into having coffee two years ago she shot me an email the night before saying ‘I might not be what you expect…’ Boy was she right. I called TBogg and said ‘you’re never gonna believe this…’

Thank you Jane. Clearly, you are an exceptional individual — as is Digby. It is no wonder that you two could establish such a friendship. Thanks again so very much for presenting her (finally!) to us! What a treat for us all!
Once again, I guess I’m slow on the uptake, but, it appears that Jane Hamsher and FDL organized and created this event? And had Digby present as she did?
Then, I guess I really need to drop another kudo on FDL, Jane, and all the others In The Lake.
The ’speech’ was such wow, now I’m dealing with that Jane and FDL put it together . . .
Guess I’ll just say thanks, and thanks to all bloggers for a place to get some truth of things without having to spend months on a single issue in a library . . . this is how democracy should be . . . where the evil in the species is quickly held to light for the masses to see, judge, pass sentence on and speedily execute.
Digby was a prolific and fantastic commentator at Eschaton, Hesiod’s site, and elsewhere, and was arm-twisted into getting her own blog. Haloscan has robbed us of many of those early comments, alas. But the Koufaxes for 2002 say it all (apart from getting the gender correct in the lede): “It is a pleasure to know that on any given day, I may get to read Digby.”
I thought I could survive quite well without knowing her (eir?) identity or hearing her voice. Well, she’s a good enough speaker to put that to rest, and a better political climate would funnel financial rewards into her lap.
As I said soon after Steve Gilliard’s death, his one long-standing gripe was with a lack of progressive political structures to sustain loud, clear, intelligent voices. Wingnut welfare allows the proliferation of bullshitters with bullshit titles at bullshit foundations, with money that slushes round — tax-deductible, natch.
Having Digby on stage, even before her closing words, reminded me of Steve’s voice and his presence and his force of personality. It’s still a painful gap: I read about Bloomberg and want his take. I read about Petraeus and want his take. I watch the CONCACAF matches and want his take. But on his issue of keeping the words flowing: if the big wallets won’t open, then the progressive blogosphere has the heft now, I hope, to support writers who either work in environments where a byline causes problems, or who labour without just reward.
(FWIW, I guessed Digby was female before the bigger hints dropped. I also wouldn’t have been surprised if she were African-American, though in hindsight, her posts on race reflected a different experience: one who lived through the Civil Rights era and was on the right side.)
The tall fellow behind Digby in a jacket next to Jane on his left is Jerome Armstrong, founder of MyDD.
Jane, Marcy and Digby are so beautiful!
Doing the snoopy dance of celebration.
Egregious if you’re on the lake your handsome Senator Webb is on CPAN 2 repeat of the Senate committee hearing of Army Secretary Nominee and current Acting Secretary Pete Green.
The PBS Frontline has started so I’ll see you amazing pups in an hour or so. What a great evening.

No. It’s really about….
“Always let your conscience be your guide…”
You have to be of a certain age to connect with tthat, however…
It’s been a little more than four months since TIME.com re-launched with a new look and purpose. By any metric the re-launch has been a success. Page-views are up about 70% over last year, time spent on the site is up 50% and I think we can all agree that TIME.com not only looks better but reads smarter. We’re doing well.
But not well enough. As good as TIME.com is, it still needs to be better. And it still needs more content, much more. A number of our best journalists are writing stories and covering their beats for TIME.com and the magazine simultaneously, and it gives me pleasure to single some of them out by name: Joe Klein, Jim Poniewozik, Karen Tumulty, Simon Elegant, Richard Corliss, Alex Perry, Bryan Walsh, Sean Gregory, Bobby Ghosh, Massimo Calabresi, Tim McGirk and Bruce Crumley.SNIP
Clearly I’m the only one not happy about this? Not that I think my opinion should matter to Digby or have influenced this decision, but I was a lot happier with Digby being ungendered, and therefore unassailable by the majority of people (including some in this thread who are thunderstruck that a girl can be that eloquent, apparently) who cannot/will not separate their critiques of the world from the issues of gender.
I’d lay $10 that it’ll take less than 48 hours before someone uses the word “shrill” about Hullabaloo, but I don’t want to steal anyone’s money.
Gosh, I SO want to hear this and I can’t get the video to play. I’ve been “buffering” for an hour… I even went to Google Video and can’t find it. So sad! Can anyone help?
Blog for Take Back America 2007 The TBA Interview: Digby
Jun 19, 2007 at 07:45 PM by Isaiah Poole
A short, unassuming woman blended into the large audience that sat through a panel discussion I moderated on Tuesday, “The Blogosphere: From Ideas to Action.” It was not until the panel ended and I was rushing out of the room that I happened to notice the name on her tag: “Digby.”
Digby had amassed a large following and deep respect in the progressive blogosphere for insightful, passionate writing on political issues, but before Tuesday no one knew the person behind Digby. That night, Digby revealed herself to the world and gave a rousing speech about what progressive bloggers have contributed to the movement as she accepted, on behalf of progressive bloggers, the Paul Wellstone Citizen Leadership Award. Earlier in the day, I was able to spend a few moments chatting with Digby.
Here are excerpts… digby interview
Hi Christine! OK. I’m Mac, but let’s try some stuff. Have you been able to watch YouTube or Google-type videos before? Are you using a dialup modem or a high speed connection like DSL or Cable Internet? Lets start with that.
I’ve enjoyed Digby’s work for a long time. Sometime back, she hinted in a posting that she might be a woman. I e-mailed her to ask. She replied:
I am just digby. It’s become kind of an open secret lately that I’m a woman so I guess there’s no reason not to admit it. One day I will .write about my experiences as a genderless virtual entity so I’ve never made much effort to clear up the confusion. It’s not all that interesting but it might have some entertainment value.
A ~~Early on in the very early Usenet days when we’re all writing online no one quite knew what to make of the Internet and we all used pseudonyms because we weren’t sure what that meant to be yourself on the Internet. I found it a great challenge to write in sort of a genderless entity as a writer. I couldn’t argue from authority, I couldn’t even argue from my own experience, really. So I developed a way of writing and a way of thinking that was actually quite modern in the sense that on the Internet people were creating personalities that in a way I was kind of deconstructing. ~~
Wow. This is absolutely fantastic. Thanks Jane! Thanks Digby! Juneteenth – mark the date. A new beginning and I’m sure many new editions of “What Digby Said” coming down the pike, perhaps in a paying venue with $$$. But don’t quit the blog!
Great for Digby to get some public recognition now although of course now it might be difficult for her to retain some privacy. Still, don’t know who you are because I haven’t read all the comments, but been reading you for well over four years and appreciate your searing wit and insight.
Pretty damn good speech for somebody who doesn’t give ‘em for a living. The content was typically cutting and confrontational, and digby herself possessed a distinct gravitas that says, ‘do not ignore me.’
I thought to ask if a new star is rising, but clearly digby is not personally outgoing. I hope she realizes that she has many, many fans who will cherish every chance they get to see her and hear her speak.
Perhaps in time digby will become more comfortable in the public eye, for she has little to fear. In the realm of public discourse, digby packs a BFG.
I feel bad I was sure Digby was a man. Well, wasn’t sure….but had assumed, for whatever reason. That said, it doesn’t change the respect I have and appreciation for Digby’s ability.
I am shocked to learn that Digby is a female human. Female, I can understand (and I’d read as much on Daily Kos a while back) but she is too smart to be human. I’d always imagined a hyperintelligent St. Bernard from another galaxy:
You know, knowing what she looks like, but still not having her real name, makes it even more painful somehow. I could tolerate the total anonymity, but now that I know what she looks like, not having her name drives me INSANE.
Perhaps now she can take that picture of a guy on her blog down? I mean, I always associated her with that picture, and I’d much rather look at her “real” person! :)
Great speech. I knew Digby was a woman. It never entered my mind to think otherwise.
But I disagree with one thing. As much progress as the netroots has made (substantial!) and as healthy as it is, it has NOT succeeded in organizing a movement. Sure, the people who would naturally groove toward the netroots, but not in our communities. We need to stop patting ourselves on the back for such a delusion. We are a minority, and I guarantee you that you can go out into any city or town in this country and ask someone if they have heard of any of these premier blogs, and they have not.
The dissatisfaction that our countrymen expressed in election 2006 was due to the regular factors: economic woes and tiring of wars and perhaps clueing in somewhat to the party of corruption and being disgusted by it.
So, my challenge to all those fantastic premier bloggers up on that stage is to call out to your regular readers to ORGANIZE and get the word out about the facts of what is happening in this country IN our communities, in person, and in a relentless manner.
When we emerge from our desks and keyboards and monitors and do that, I will THEN say we have ORGANIZED.
. . . Like lemmings, they are following their instincts without knowing that they are all jumping off the edge of a cliff. Unfortunately they are taking us and the rest of the world with them
I’m sorry we lost track of each other as the dinner broke up tonight, but I really wanted to thank you from the bottom of my heart for welcoming me to the gala tonight, stinky clothes and underdressed and all (may I add how elegant you and Echidne both looked?) and bringing me in to the circle. It was a special end for a special week for me. Hope to see you all at YKos.
I wanted to first thank FDL for sharing the video — and for her many sincere words of wisdom. And second i want to commend and congratulate Digby not only on her passionate speech, but for her inspiration. And last, but certainly not least, a thank you to all the writers, bloggers and commenters who share your time, energy, thoughts, information and knowledge.
Digby’s speech was awesome. She defined what drives people to expression. Bush was never shy about calling himself a uniter, but who knew he would unite the world against his policies. Although iam loathe to give him credit, the absolute frustration with his policies birthed a whole new political sphere of committed citizens. As a result it grew into a unique and dedicated, intelligent, creative, engaged community who deeply care about preserving the ideals, principles and traditions of America. Like a moth to light more are drawn daily.
So you see Bush did do something “good” for the country — to his chagrin, Iam sure, if he knew he was indirectly responsible for the progressive blogosphere. LOL
Thank you so much for letting us share in Digby’s speech! I bet I’ll be hitting replay again and again today. I think she even exceeded my expectations, if that was possible. :)
aquifinafauxpas @ 11:31, I hope Digby doesn’t take that image down! I might be mistaken, but isn’t that Peter Finch’s character from Network shouting, “I’m mad as hell and I’m not going to take it anymore!”? At least that’s what I thought of the very first time I saw it. But she expresses that “Hullabaloo” with such eloquent, intelligent language. We’re so lucky to have you, Digby!
Perhaps now she can take that picture of a guy on her blog down?
That “guy” is a stylized version of a scene from the movie “Network”, for which Peter Finch won an Oscar for his portrayal of fictional TV anchorman Howard Beale. You may not recognize the movie, but you probably have heard of the scene where he tells people to go to their windows, open them, stick their heads out and yell
“I’m as mad as Hell, and I’m not going to take this anymore!”
It ranks as one of the most memorable scenes of all time. That movie really moved me as a younger person when I saw it in the theater. It was waaaaay ahead of its time. It was about the absurd lengths television networks would go to for ratings.
For a movie that was a farce it’s eerie how almost all of hit has basically come true.
You should rent “Network” if you’ve never seen it. It’s a hell of a movie. Finch, by the way, won the Oscar posthumously. He died between the time the movie was out and the Oscars rolled around. And believe me, it was no sympathy award. He was magnificent.
Digby’s use of Howard Beale is right on the money. I hope she leaves it there.
Digby was a prolific and fantastic commentator at Eschaton, Hesiod’s site, and elsewhere, and was arm-twisted into getting her own blog. Haloscan has robbed us of many of those early comments, alas. (FWIW, I guessed Digby was female before the bigger hints dropped. I also wouldn’t have been surprised if she were African-American, though in hindsight, her posts on race reflected a different experience: one who lived through the Civil Rights era and was on the right side.)
Pfifferling & TPhillip: thank you so much for the reference! I haven’t seen the film, so I profess ignorance of the scene, and am obliged to you both…I’ll look for the movie! And yes, Digby, FDL, and TPM have been a standby in this household for a few years as a cry for sanity in this crazy unbelievable world. Perfectly apropos, that pic, then…
aquifinafauxpas @ 4:21, I’m not very good at cultural references, so I’m glad that TPhillip was able to confirm it. When I first saw that image, I knew I had come to the right place. :)
What’s interesting is that in its 70s leisure suit look just how prescient it is. It’s fascinating to watch it today. So even if you have seen it, years ago, I urge you to watch it again.
Sorry, Mr. Broder, no pernicious conspiracy here, just a universal, virtual agreement between clear-minded citizen/voters, the likes of which you can see on this video stage and read here every day.
But so are Jane and Christie and TRex and all of the rest of the left blogosphere. Every night, I thank God (even though I’m an atheist) that these people exist and speak to us and for us.
We (and all of America) are truly blessed that we have such wonderful people speaking up for the best that our country can be.
Larue @ 113 asked for a left-to-right identification of those on the stage. If it’s possible, I’d really like that, too. I am a regular reader of the progressive blogosphere, but I wouldn’t recognize anyone on sight.
Now if we could just sit Broder and Cohen and Russert – well, the list of clueless MSM nabobs is too long – down in front of this video of Digby’s speech and make them watch it until the wisdom sinks in.
Thank you, Digby. I come to Hullabaloo when the craziness gets too much – and always feel old Howard is letting out that big scream for me.
Does anyone have a transcript of the speech they can point me towards? Can’t view video through firewall here at undisclosed location.
Hullabaloo and Digby are awesome.
Thanks, Jane, for posting the video. Digby has long been a daily must-read (along with the crew at FDL)and I was delighted to see and hear her. She said she’s not accustomed to public speaking but I find that hard to believe. She was eloquent, confident, generous, and I loved seeing her surrounded by Jane, Marcy, and the other bloggers we love so much. BTW, the “turban” looked like a beret to me and was very classy.
I was initially thrown by the Howard Beale picture on her blog, but I started to figure out Digby was a woman some time ago. I remember thinking that it was smart to “disembody” her voice so that her writing couldnt be attacked with side issues. Something that is fairly common on the left blogosphere as well as the right – think how many times you’ve heard Jonah Goldberg called “doughy” even though his writing gives you a ton of ammo to make of him with.
I’m glad to have heard this speech, glad she came out of the woodwork, but a bit sad thinking that this one fact might mean a 10-fold increase in the hatemail and ranty comments that Hullaballoo gets. meh, misogynists.
As a guy who has fought the “Bubba” mysogynists all of my life for equal pay for women, I am surprised by the fact that some of you are surprised that a super talented blogger turns out to be a woman.
I knew it. Digby is me. Dye her hair brown and she could be my twin.
But not only in appearance. I’ve been reading her blog for a long time because of the content, the way she put together disparate events and ideas into cogent themes and conclusions.
She is one of the people who saved my life from a hopelessness that was growing since the impeachment. Finding blogs and like thinking people gave me hope that things could change and that my children weren’t destined to live in a country controlled by unprincipled greed merchants.
Congratulations Digby, Jane, Marcy and all the other bloggers! I can just see the Richard Cohens, Broders and Joe Kleins becoming increasingly irrelevant.
Wonderful, wonderful speech.
I hang my head in shame that it never even remotely occurred to me Digby might be a woman. I feel like someone’s just rearranged the furniture in my brain.
Anyway, great job Digby!
I too am embarrassed that it never crossed my mind that Digby was a woman – I’ve been a reader and financial supporter for years and am SO happy that she’s come forward! Congratulations!
I feel so sorry for people in this country who don’t even know the netroots exist. Especially when I know that they have an internet connection. It is really sad to me.
At last! A “face” to put with the name and public recognition for one of the greatest blogger pundits I’ve ever had the pleasure to read, time and time again.
I began to suspect that “Digby” is a woman recently (love it!) but could never verify it until now. Why does that fact that she is make me so happy? It just does.
What a wonderful insightful, articulate voice you bring to the discourse. The power of your writing has brought me to tears often and inspired me to do more than weep. I keep going back to the well for more. I am so grateful to you, Digby.
zunoed?
Unoed?
Jane!!
Yeah, we’re having us some fun now.
So why Digby? … and Digby is a woman after all!!
Looks like a ton of fun.
Jane,
I can see you peeking there behind Digby! Hope all is well and you are feeling your oats…
dakine01 @ 7
She gave an amazing speech. We were all very proud to be up there with her.
Wasn’t Digby awesome?
The moment we’ve all been waiting for. Thanks, Jane, for bringing digby home!
What. A. Show.
Look at that stage full of Patriots!
I knew it! She’s a woman.
What a voice she is for the progressive blogosphere. There is no one out there quite like her.
The Big Reveal! Yay!
Go, Digby, go! I’m watching the clip now, but I think it’s awesome that she’s made the Big Time … superb analysis comes out of the Santa Monica bunker.
Big smile right now. =)
All right – a woman!!!!!
(boing) Inward three-and-a-half somersaults, tuck, feet slightly apart on entry with resultant splash
g’evening everyone
Why isn’t everyone wearing pajamas and smoking jackets?
Eureka Springs @ 16
Does my turban count?
Suzanne @ 15
Evening. We’re all cheering. Oh, the dive, too!
Digby is the best!! Congratulations, Digby!!!
newtonusr @ 11
And after that speech, Digby For President!!!
Where are all the women bloggers? And how come they don’t blog about all those important things I care about?
Jane, love that hat.
Digby is an exemplary writer and thinker. good for her!
Bunch-a terrific people working & havin fun together. Doesn’t get any better! ;->
Dig-BEE! Dig-BEE! Dig-BEE!
WHOO-HOO! GREAT speech!
WOW!
She’s just amazing.
Thanks, Jane (You’re amazing, too!)
Outrageous! WoooHoooo. Jane, you are the cat’s pajamas!!
Watching now. This is excellent.
Dover Bitch @ 19
Hey DB, you’re doing a pretty good job maintainin’ the tradition your own self…
I hang my head in shame that it never even remotely occurred to me Digby might be a woman. I feel like someone’s just rearranged the furniture in my brain.
Anyway, great job Digby!
w00t!
Great Speech!
Digby RULES! Jane ROCKS! Lookin’ good girl. Love the turban…next step: BAGGING *wink
Evan @ 32
Ouch! Who told you to put the coffee table there!
First Digby post ever?
Quote:
Yay!!!!
(and, I see that Joe has “gone native”…)
Fabulous speech, and I’m glad she “came out”. She’s as thought provoking and insightful in person as on Hullabaloo.
More Digby, please!
Wow, I came to this post after watching Frontline. What a breath of fresh air. Digby’s speech was one of grace and joy for me. Thank you Jane for introducing her to me.
Awww, what a great speech! Thanks, Jane, for posting it. This is the power and the glory of this country, in full display.
dakine01 @ 30
Today, when everybody was doing their best Spartacus “I’m Digby!!” I was thinking… well, it’s obvious I’m not!! There’s only one Digby.
What a fantastic speech and how beautiful of her to end it with a memorial to Steve Gilliard. I’m moved to tears tonight.
She’s so cute I could just sop her up with a biscuit!
Awwwwww.
DIGBY I LOVE YOU!!! LET ME BE YOUR HOUSEBOY!!
Dover Bitch @ 45
Lovely, touching speech. Jane, thank you for sharing it.
It’s so nice to put a face with a name! I always want to know “what Digby said!”
Jane Hamsher @ 16
Absolutely.
Just finished the video with watery eyes. sniff.
When we are all rich progressives you all need to ride onto the stage atop white horses..)
Great speech Digby! Thanks for saying what we bumbling inarticulate angry lambs cannot.
The Snarky one wanted to know why she made 22 sound young. Help me to not laugh.
Digby does us proud!
That was so excellent. Tears of joy! Jane, you look so beautiful and so does Marcy!
She inspires us all.
I love the “apology” to Broder.
Wow, what a great speech. Digby, as usual, is so spot on it’s hard to process.
Everyone looks so good. Thanks for posting it Jane.
The netroots really does rock.
I so gotta get a high speed connection – it is going to take hours for this to download on my dialup
Digby: that was great. Thanks. And thanks, Jane, for posting it.
Suzanne, it is so worth the wait! Just fantastic.
I feel so sorry for people in this country who don’t even know the netroots exist. Especially when I know that they have an internet connection. It is really sad to me.
Digby!
Ocean Park, represent!
I loved her description of the qualifications necessary to be a pundit:
-I have ideas, I write them down-
It’s nice to meet you, Digs.
Whoa! Digby is a chick! Well shut my mouth!
LoudounLib @ 58
oh, it is!
Excellent!!!!!!!!!
Ah, exactly as I pictured her. Feisty and as articulate in person as in print.
Welcome out, Digby!!
Thanks for the stage here, Jane!! and shout out to Marcy!
Are ya’ still here, Jane?
blondes rule!
Sangemon @ 55
Seconded
A compelling intelligent summary of why the netroots matter.
Brilliant and elegant.
Oilfieldguy @ 63
And you’re suprised? At FDL?
Sangemon @ 55
You can always listen twice.
Dammitall, that was cathartic!!!
I’m actually tearing up because the rational, passionate voice of the left is FEMALE.
And a hello to emptywheel, too.
Rayne @ 72
Often has been throughout history
Hey, what’s Duncan Hack doing up there on that Firedoglake video? Is he going to follow Eli over here? Are we going to be stuck in a never-ending open thread?
Elliott @ 61
simply eloquent.
OT ~ Tonight’s FRONTLINE online…ENDGAME
Watching Digby’s speech I could see passion, sanity, and intelligence, all in one person speaking. How rare is that? We’re lucky to have her, along with others like Markos, Duncan, our own Jane and Christy, the late Steve Gilliard, et. al. I didn’t know how hopeless I felt until I began to feel hope again. “Freedom soon will come, then we’ll come from the shadows.”
Scarecrow,
That was a baited hook I threw out there, and you took the line. Many, many times I drag my knuckles through the lake in a very modified spoof of the legendary Merkin Patriot.
I paint a target on myself as a representative of those who breed in the shallow end of the gene pool. Sometimes pups bark at me.
Wow! I am proud to say I knew Digby when she was a man, baby! SHE has got MOJO!
Wow! I had no idea Digby was a woman. She is truly amazing I read Hullabaloo everyday.
Clarity. Sage.
TexBetsy @ 74
Yeah, TexB, I think this is the swing of the pendulum. I give Fukuyama credit for this model, that the pendulum swings through human development in the opposite direction when it goes too far one way.
The opposite of an excessively-testosteroned cowboy-wannabe overgrown toddler is a firm-handed mother figure. Perhaps not a mother in fact, but a mother of invention, willing to correct and recreate the way back to sanity.
Loo Hoo
You Have Mail (personal)…
I’m sorry to OT, but, it’s Late Night…and it’s All SO Good!
An honor to view those clips . . . FDL rawhks.
Waving to Jane from over here, jumping up and down for attention.
Elliott @ 82
And a powerful mind.
Jane Hamsher @ 17
YES!
Love the scarf, too.
Oilfieldguy @ 79
I wasn’t doubting you. I was hatched in that end of the pool, but I have to believe in evolution.
You look at that group on the stage and you see America’s new media. What a proud moment for them all, and for us.
Great speech, Digby.
Scarecrow @ 89
You were tearing it up pretty good yourself this morning, Scarecrow. Great morning here, too.
Thanks, I needed that.
Not used to public speaking, she says….
Damn, I am so proud! This video was quite a treat.
((( Jane ))) thank you!
Scarecrow @ 89
Hardly.
jane hamsher @ 95
Thank you Jane, is was wonder full.
jo6pak,
I haven’t seen you around in these parts before. In case you are new, welcome! Your handle speaks for so many Americans. I hope they will join us.
What a coming out party for Digby!!!
And what a dynamite speech! Is there a transcript??? Now to read through the comments…
Bob in HI
Okay, let me say it. I am so proud of our team. To name some names would be futile because the bench is so deep and wide and full. Just to be a part of it just busts my buttons.
I could not help but notice how supremely gracious Digby was deflecting praise to everyone.
And passion, holy shit.
Most excellent!
don’t want to be a spoiler, but I was under the impression all along that Digby is a woman.
You Rock Digby!!!
Digby rocks! Thank you for posting the video.
I am glad Digby was given the opportunity to come forward on her own terms.
jcricket @ 105
Is your handle about “cricket” – the second most fantastic sport in the history of man (Hockey is first !!!) or about that insect that one hears but never sees ? *g*
Rayne @ 98
Yes, “anger is the only sane response.” But look at it from the other side. It is the “traditional media” who are looking, somewhat longingly, at the people on the stage. To have their passion again! And they know it is they who may be three standard deviations away from what they should have been. No, this is a transition moment, and they must sense it.
Can anyone list the standing left to right?
Thanks . .
Waiting for video to load. Now that Gilliard is gone, dammit, I hit Digby regularly……..glad to hear that she payed homage to the best of the best. She and Marsh, and Jane are powerful voices…..thanx to them all.
Hi Loo Hoo
I come by everyday to listen to every one, this was treat to see what every one looks like and that there is light at the end of the tunnel. We just have to remember to never give up, because it will be a long fight and worth every minute.
jo6pac
Gosh darn, Thanks Suzanne.
Really long day.
I’ll try to catch up!
Really thanks!
Whatta blonde. What can I say?
Scarecrow @ 113
spot on, Scarecrow
demi @ 116
Welcome in!
I guess this is sexist of me, but for some reason I had assumed Digby to be a guy. I’m very surprised (but in a good way) by this turn of events.
Standing O
Yaya Yaya Yaya!
Scarecrow @ 112
I’ll agree on this: those folks on the stage have passion that is three standard deviations away or more than what the corporate media musters.
Sure, there are blowhards, but they blow hard, hence the name. They do not have the zeal to dig for the facts, double-check and refute anything that does not jibe with what they have uncovered. And those people on the stage are everything they aren’t in that regard.
Now if only we could find a way to undo the horror of excessive consolidation in media ownership, these folks could remake the world.
demi, i was a blonde as a child, and it occasionally will tag me, even into adulthood :)
Rayne @ 82: Here’s your pendulum for you:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oqPPdj6WqyQ
Welcome (back) Newtonuser,
Gosh, now that I’m here… I’m pooped.
Loo Hoo – You’ve got (personal Email)
LoudounLib @ 87
Amen to that !!!
Thank you, Virginia (123), that’s absolutely the ticket!!
whispers good night to all as she exits the Lake
Blonde can be fun sometimes to use towards those who think it means something. :) okay, I read what I wrote, and it sounds twisted. Sorry, but still…
Late Nite should be up shortly, but I may be in transit for a bit. You kids play nicely.
LoudounLib @ 127
Shhh! Sleep well.
TRex
Well, c’mon. That’s easy for you to say. But, Do We Hafta?
g’nite LL
If they don’t play nicely, can I have fun with ‘em, TRex?
Unmask911 @ 114
Gosh, I SO want to hear this and I can’t get the video to play. I’ve been “buffering” for an hour… I even went to Google Video and can’t find it. So sad! Can anyone help?
Respect ya, Jo6pak!
Trex says, A mind is a terrible thing to taste. New thread.
Digby is the true meaning of:
Grrrl!
She has made me so proud to be a Progressive.
Christine Edmonson @ 133
Christine – Mac or PC?
lh @ 103
lh,
Wouldn’t that be great? I’m so glad to see her. It was very fine of her to mention one of the finest bloggers, the late Steve Gilliard.
jane hamsher @ 95
‘Git a rope.
Jane you look so beautiful and Digby made me cry with chills what a speech!
Digby was spectacular!
Petrocelli @ 112
No. It’s really about….
“Always let your conscience be your guide…”
You have to be of a certain age to connect with tthat, however…
But, it was great of you to ask!!! Thanks!!!:)
demi, got it and emailed back. Big thanks!
I thought this was interesting….
‘Time’ Shoving Its Reluctant Writers Online
To: TIME Edit Staff
From: Rick Stengel
It’s been a little more than four months since TIME.com re-launched with a new look and purpose. By any metric the re-launch has been a success. Page-views are up about 70% over last year, time spent on the site is up 50% and I think we can all agree that TIME.com not only looks better but reads smarter. We’re doing well.
But not well enough. As good as TIME.com is, it still needs to be better. And it still needs more content, much more. A number of our best journalists are writing stories and covering their beats for TIME.com and the magazine simultaneously, and it gives me pleasure to single some of them out by name: Joe Klein, Jim Poniewozik, Karen Tumulty, Simon Elegant, Richard Corliss, Alex Perry, Bryan Walsh, Sean Gregory, Bobby Ghosh, Massimo Calabresi, Tim McGirk and Bruce Crumley.SNIP
from the gawker….
*sigh*
Clearly I’m the only one not happy about this? Not that I think my opinion should matter to Digby or have influenced this decision, but I was a lot happier with Digby being ungendered, and therefore unassailable by the majority of people (including some in this thread who are thunderstruck that a girl can be that eloquent, apparently) who cannot/will not separate their critiques of the world from the issues of gender.
I’d lay $10 that it’ll take less than 48 hours before someone uses the word “shrill” about Hullabaloo, but I don’t want to steal anyone’s money.
newtonusr @ 138
pc, and I’m not so smart about all of this…
Driving by, very cool, Digby’s awesome. Way to go. I love it.
floored and delighted. brilliant speech, of course. but digby’s a she! i’m embarrassed at the many poor pronoun choices i’ve made in praising her.
Margot @ 139:
And isn’t that how the cons/righties do it?
That’s just wonderful! Thanks Jane!
Excellent speech, Digby!!!

The TBA Interview: Digby
Here are excerpts…
digby interview
Christine Edmonson @ 150
Hi Christine! OK. I’m Mac, but let’s try some stuff. Have you been able to watch YouTube or Google-type videos before? Are you using a dialup modem or a high speed connection like DSL or Cable Internet? Lets start with that.
Have you rebooted? If not, do so now.
What fun it was to introduce Joe Wilson to Digby. Good thing Jane and I stopped at Best Buy yesterday for that little camera!
Pachacutec @ 157
God this night rules. Congrats Pach.
And these women!
newtonusr @ 158
You said it … this is the moment when the MSM wags got a visual that they are heading to extinction.
Watching Keith Olbermann re-run:
Who is coaching him to pronounce Ghraib as “He-ray-b”??? That’s neither Arabic or English. Anyway, a great segment!
…and Karpinski to follow tomorrow!

Pachacutec @ 157
Great job Pachacutec, what a gift you made possible. Thanks so much.
Petrocelli @ 159
And they’ll never see’em coming. Guaranteed.
Elliott @ 61
You forgot Part III: People read them (ideas)!
People who have ideas and write them down aren’t pundits if no one reads them –one of the reasons I don’t qualify as a pundit :-)

Bob Schacht @ 160
I can’t wait for Janis to testify before Congress.
TexBetsy @ 70
Well now I’ve listened several times, and it just gets better

Thank you for the beacon of light you cast across this electric world of the Inet.
Your talent is of the utmost genuine in being.
Salutation and again Thank You.
Her speech brought tears to my eyes. Jane, it was great to see you standing there looking well, and well, spectacular!
Here’s to women’s voices being heard! It’s changing the world.
Love you all.
A fantastic piece. Thanks for posting it!
It’s not all that interesting but it might have some entertainment value.
cheers — digby
quoted from the interview here
Q ~~And you created this anonymous personality.~~
Bernard from another galaxy:
http://imdb.com/title/tt0069974/
i finally figured out how to get Digby’s speech embeded at my blog.
http://video.google.com/videop…..pr=goog-sl
now i can rest.
thank you, Digby!
that was soooo eloquent, so beautiful. it was perfect ……
thank you, jane, and thank you, digby.
You know, knowing what she looks like, but still not having her real name, makes it even more painful somehow. I could tolerate the total anonymity, but now that I know what she looks like, not having her name drives me INSANE.
Ann Althouse must be apoplexic over this latest snub.
“They have WOMEN on the dais! Women who are blonde and NOT ME! Wearing slinky black over their progressive boobies!
And they mentioned BILL CLINTON!!
*keels over in dead faint, after carefully putting down full glass of chardonnay first*
Will you folks be doing a transcript of digby’s speech? I can’t get it on Google video, having only w98.
Rayne @ 71
We need more women up on that stage. We really, really do!!!
Not all of us.

Jane:
I’m sorry we lost track of each other as the dinner broke up tonight, but I really wanted to thank you from the bottom of my heart for welcoming me to the gala tonight, stinky clothes and underdressed and all (may I add how elegant you and Echidne both looked?) and bringing me in to the circle. It was a special end for a special week for me. Hope to see you all at YKos.
And yeah, Digby rocks. Totally.
P.S. Thanks, Digby, for the “stay at home blogger dad” note.
David Neiwert @ 186
hear, hear!
LOL
Thank You all.
We’re so lucky to have you, Digby!
aquifinafauxpas @ 181
That “guy” is a stylized version of a scene from the movie “Network”, for which Peter Finch won an Oscar for his portrayal of fictional TV anchorman Howard Beale. You may not recognize the movie, but you probably have heard of the scene where he tells people to go to their windows, open them, stick their heads out and yell

‘Zat you, Dwight?
Molly? Molly Ivins? You can rest in peace. We’re is safe hands.

Digby made me cry… bless her.
No words….unbelievable!
I remember Kevin Drum lamenting that there were no female bloggers. Hee hee. How wrong can you be (excluding the present administration, of course)?
Digby is pure poetry.
Perfectly apropos, that pic, then…
wow.
holy shit, that was pure – righteous!
thanks for this gift jane, and so happy to see you looking healthy, and well – beautiful and effulgent.
digby, jane, marcy, christy!!!
We’re so used to listening to Jane and watching what she’s doing that we overlook how stunningly beautiful she is.
What an amazing video of Digby, Jane, Marcy, and so many other wise folks.
aquifinafauxpas @ 4:21, I’m not very good at cultural references, so I’m glad that TPhillip was able to confirm it. When I first saw that image, I knew I had come to the right place. :)
digby is PEOPLE!!!
Hail Digby! Queen of the lefty blogosphere!
This ends another edition of what digby said.
I gotta send atrios a royalty check now….
just getting here, but i am soooooooo proud of us.
take back america indeed.
TPhilip @ 190
What’s interesting is that in its 70s leisure suit look just how prescient it is. It’s fascinating to watch it today. So even if you have seen it, years ago, I urge you to watch it again.
Take Back America!
That’s what it’s all about…
Sorry, Mr. Broder, no pernicious conspiracy here, just a universal, virtual agreement between clear-minded citizen/voters, the likes of which you can see on this video stage and read here every day.
I knew Digby was a woman–by the thank you cards she would send out.
Digby is the best!
But so are Jane and Christie and TRex and all of the rest of the left blogosphere. Every night, I thank God (even though I’m an atheist) that these people exist and speak to us and for us.
We (and all of America) are truly blessed that we have such wonderful people speaking up for the best that our country can be.
We can and will make a diffference.
Can’t believe your words are even better live!
(Transcript, please?)
EX-cellent! So nice to finally see the woman behind the voice we’ve been appreciating for so long. Go Digby!
Thanks Jane!
Digby is white?
Great speech by Digby. I feel rallied. Standing ovation from me.
I was initially thrown by the Howard Beale picture on her blog, but I started to figure out Digby was a woman some time ago. I remember thinking that it was smart to “disembody” her voice so that her writing couldnt be attacked with side issues. Something that is fairly common on the left blogosphere as well as the right – think how many times you’ve heard Jonah Goldberg called “doughy” even though his writing gives you a ton of ammo to make of him with.
heh, good one, ricky.
Thank you Digby.
The Great Digby!
But I will forever think of Jane as my first love…in the blogger world, ;o). Can’t take my eyes off of your smile, Jane.
Congrats to Digby. She has been one of the prime movers of the beginning of saving this nation from the nutjobs and warmongers.
What an impressive group.
Mi complimenti.
Bay/Paris
WOW! What a great speech and an impressive lineup! For the first time in YEARS I went to bed feeling hopeful again.
Taking Back America indeed!!! Let’s Make It Happen!!!!
To the “Digby is woman” suprises, I’ll offer this: after reading all of the incredible writing on Hullabaloo, does it really matter? ;)
Of course I applaud Digby. Such a voice is always welcome, whatever the gender.
-GFO
TPhilip @ 190
I think Digby’s hot. Now, her editorial’s will be even more sizzling!!
Is there something wrong with me?
egregious @ 199
There’s an inner glow that comes with a clean conscience. That twinkle in the eye is the most beautiful of attributes.
Congratulations Digby, Jane, Marcy and all the other bloggers! I can just see the Richard Cohens, Broders and Joe Kleins becoming increasingly irrelevant.
Wonderful, wonderful speech.
I swear I never had a clue. Great cover, Digby, and thanks for all you do.
Hey – not sure if anyone else beat me to it, but I went ahead and transcribed Digby’s speech for anyone interested.
I think Ricki Lee Jones would call that speech the “El Supremo”!
Evan @ 32
I too am embarrassed that it never crossed my mind that Digby was a woman – I’ve been a reader and financial supporter for years and am SO happy that she’s come forward! Congratulations!
I’m feeling very Forrest Whittaker in Crying Game right now.
ccmask @ 58
I TOTALLY AGREE
What digby said.
