Oh, this is silly.
Does everyone else know something I don’t?
SteveAudio is like John Malkovich in Being John Malkovich
Go tell the others we’re here.
TREX!!! So, were you at the movies with kissing guy?
TREX!!! So, were you at the movies with kissing guy?
i just got here :P
No, Mr. Shoulders and I ordered Chinese and watched “Impromptu”. There was some smooching involved, yes.
Is this thing on?Dover Bitch @ 6
Cute!
Actually, Suzanne, as officialrepresentative of the site, it’s been acting pretty strange…sometimes when I write a comment, the “Submit” button stays grayed out?
Suzanne, are you standing in a bucket?
There seems to be an echo at your end.
And now I tried to edit that last one, and it wouldn;t let me.
Lawrence Tribe, famous Constitutional Law authority, speaking on CSPAN today about Alberto Gonzales. And he isn’t pulling any punches, either.
Bob in HI
Feist played a show while I was in NYC this week, but I couldn’t go. :(
Bob Schacht @ 15
Tribe joined Bruce Fein and Glenn Greenwald recently on a radio show to talk about the Comey/Ashcroft hospital visit. It was a great radio segment.
Dover Bitch @ 16
I didn’t know Doug was in a band! Oh, wait…you said Feist!
Nevermind.
Bob Schacht @ 15
Quotes please … I’ve been dying to hear a Constitutional Lawyer speak about Abu.
Dover Bitch @ 17
If you could link to that show, I would be deeply grateful.
Wish the hell someone in the “Justice” department would shed some light.
Dover Bitch @ 17
Here’s the link to that radio show if you want to hear it.
Loo Hoo. @ 21
I wish the hell someone in the justice department would act like they were in the justice department.
Dover Bitch @ 22
Much obliged, Ma’am!
Just got back from Cyndi Lauper and her True Colors show in Atlantic City. I was 15 ft from Debbie Harry tonight, I can die a happy man.
Great show, Marget Cho took on the Paris, the Pope, Christians, and The Passion of Christ.
The Dresden Dolls kicked ass.
SteveAudio @ 23
Just asking – did you hear Arlen Specter’s opening statement in the Comey hearing? You agree with him more than you think.

Here’s a tour I might go see: http://www.truecolorstour.com/

Thanks for the heads up.

I love Deborah Harry’s character. She left her career when Blondie was at their peak, to tend to her husband,
who was afflicted with a serious ailment.
newtonusr @ 26
Thing is, with Spector it’s 1 step forward, 2 steps back, usually. He talks tough, then votes with his side.
Millineryman @ 25
I just noticed we were talking aobut the same tour.
SteveAudio @ 30
Clearly. However, he won’t suggest Bush fire Abu, he leaves absolutely no wiggle room. Not an inch.
Petrocelli @ 29
I know, she’s personal icon for me. When Trex asked one night if you could be someone of the opposite sex, I choose her.
Petrocelli @ 19
Well, at the beginning he said that Gonzales should never have been confirmed as AG in the first place. So far, however, he’s on a long detour through his new book on the Invisible Constitution. He’s setting something up, like maybe Gonzo’s stupid talk about Habeas Corpus not being explicitly affirmed in the Constitution.

Cool, it was a great show. Andy Bell was DJing the after party, which would be been loads of fun, however I have to work tomorrow.

Why can’t we have someone like Tribe on the Supreme Court?
I know, bad question. It invites a lot of spewing…

Justice Department “Typo” Costs US $100 Million
WASHINGTON — It was a $100 million mistake, and a federal judge said Friday he doesn’t have the power to fix it.
The Justice Department goofed last year and cited the wrong law in a binding plea agreement with telecommunication entrepreneur Walter Anderson, the largest tax scofflaw in U.S. history. That mistake made it impossible for the government to recover between $100 million and $175 million, U.S. District Judge Paul L. Friedman said in March.
Prosecutors urged him to reconsider but Friedman reluctantly said Friday that his hands were tied.
“The court is not free to read something into a contract that is not there or to interpret uncertain language in the government’s favor,” Friedman said.

I think he was trying to be kind.
However, he also takes a long historical perspective. His take on the courts is that every time Bush’s unitary executive theory has been tested in the courts, Bush has lost. So I think he is confident that in time, things will be put right. IIRC, of course.

ok thanks, vg.
CTuttle @ 180

our theme music for today
The Pentagon is removing questions about an servicemembers mental health from their regular evaluations of fitness.
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/200…..GSOBrMWM0F
Now they make it sound as if this is being done to encourage the individuals to seek treatment…If this was the REAL REASON behind this I’d be pleased…but one does have to note that they are not doing anything about disciplining those that use a soldiers mental state to withhold them from advancement and assignments.
So perhaps they are simply using this to conceal the impact of the Iraq War on the mental state of those serving these insanely long and repeated tours there! Hide the numbers!
In addition, it will allow the continued assignment to Iraq of individuals who are suffering from PTSD and other mental illnesses. And the commender who does so will be shielded from responsibility if something goes “wrong” by the fact that he didn’t have any hint in his records.
Instead of non-reporting, there needs to be a system where there are no sanctions for seeking help…while at the same time allowing military people the ability to have treatment without putting them in positions that could harm themselves, others, and the national security. That would require some level of anonymity of reporting and “cover” for those that were pulled from their regimental duties that would not make them targets.
This policy simply doesn’t do that. It’s simply a way to jimmy the statistics about the wars psychological damage on the troops.
hey punaise

Bad you you for such a cryptic comment. I trust that you think that Whitehouse is leading the way.
Pretty much, Petrocelli. Didn’t you catch it Thursday (I think it was Thursday) when he totally crashed any momentum Whitehouse built up with his speech on the floor.
Valley Girl @ 199
Bad me. Sorry. He’s a prolific former USA, and AG of Rhode Island who had the Obstruction of Justice bit in his teeth immediately after DiFi started looking at the USA firings.
hmmm, Suz. had another edit problem. But, a little thing, all in all.

VG, have you rebooted your browswer? I had to reboot my browswer after the tech crew fixed the earlier problem in order to make it all better.
just a drive-by. be seein’ y’all…
Petrocelli @ 197
My bad again. Should have said WRT Harry…
newtonusr @ 201
Oh, yes! I have followed his smackdowns, via FDL. He is a bright light in all this mess.
VG, I know the tech crew was prioritizing the fixes, with the bells and whistle stuff (like quote this comment and edit this comment) being fairly low on the priority list. They will eventually have it all fixed – I figure that is when WordPress will do another upgrade.
(waving as the punaisemobile drives off)
Suzanne @ 200
I was here during the ‘no confidence vote’ blog, giving my $ .02 , but I didn’t hear him disparage the SJC.
I did see and hear him pour cold water over the fiery remarks of Schumer and Whitehouse.
Even McCaskill’s brief but amazing speech was rent asunder by Vanilla Ice Harry …
Further Mac and FDL – Been unable to duplicate on PPC and Intel – number of browsers, OS’s, etc. Sorry Steve. Still working.
Suz- it is more complicated. I will give you details if it continues to happen. But, I tried to edit my comment, before any other comments were posted. And, then I got an error message (something like I needed to save my prev. comment) Once there are new comments after mine, that isn’t a problem.
newtonusr @ 206
I thought he was clearly trying to diminish Schumer by asking if Chuck was the senior Senator from New York … as if it’s not important enough for Reid to remember that.
In (partial) defense of Reid and Congresses ratings…
they are measured differently than Bush’s Approval Ratings.
Apparently they ask if one “Strongly Approves-Somewhat Approve- Somewhat Disapprove-Strongly Disapprove” of Bush’s job. Theyb then take the first two as a measure of his “Approval Level”
But for Congress and Reid They ask if you think they are doing a Great , Good, Fair or Poor job. And they take only the first two as the measure of Approval…leaving off those that say they are doing a Fair job.
When you do this you get about 30% higher measures of approval than those generally cited (e.g. 19%)
Petrocelli @ 210
He didn’t disparage, but he makes Harry and Schumer look like they have nothing but politics to offer. He’s got the goods. His interview with Todd Graves gave him 35 or so minutes to flesh out an issue that Schumer would have wasted with drama.
Petrocelli @ 210
You and Suz are on the same page. I remember those comments.
Valley Girl @ 207
I think all Dems on SJC are amazing. They are also well organized and well coordinated, like a finely tuned engine.
Valley Girl @ 212
send em to rick, VG, please.
Petrocelli @ 217
They sure are better than most of HJC.
Another rat deserts the sinking ship that is DOJ:
this time it’s Elston, who was McNulty’s chief of staff.
newtonusr @ 215
Leahy deserves a lot of credit for coordinating the Dems. I think he made Whitehouse have that one- on- one with Graves to contrast the earlier battering they all gave to Alvin and it was very effective. Then Leahy showed up in the end and told his famous RFK story.
It was a poignant moment, which the MSM ignored, IIRC.
Petrocelli @ 221
The RFK story gets a little better every time, though.
newtonusr @ 219
I will be the first to call Conyers and apologise, if he does what he writes at dkos.
Watching his hearings is torture for me, and I thought I was an Ocean of patience !!! *g*
Soon, only the secretaries and clerical support staff will be all that is left at DOJ.
Petrocelli @ 223
I thank Dog for Davis & Schiff. That bit of questioning of Goodling was terrific.
newtonusr @ 222
Given the current subversion of the Constitution, I think Leahy appreciates that story even more …
… it showed in his eyes when he told it at the Todd Graves’ hearing.
Suzanne @ 224
Abu enters DOJ one morning in near future, and sees… no one. “Hello? Hello?”
newtonusr @ 225
She was very clever or devious, depending on which side you’re on. She only answered what she wanted to, and delayed answering the other questions until their time ran out. I wished Schiff had conceded all his time in the end to Davis.
newtonusr @ 227
and wonders “where did everyone go”
Suzanne @ 229
Are we three the only ones here? *g*
Petrocelli @ 228
When Davis got yielded all that additional time from the Texan, and from Debbie, Lundgren the asshole tried to save her. Davis got the bit about the “uncomfortable” chat with Abu anyway. Right.
Are we three the only ones here? *g*
Question Abu askes daily in boosh/rove meeings.
Cinnamonape@191, You’ve hit the nail on the head! What problem? Soldiers don’t report their mental status, now the Pentagon isn’t even going to ask! How convenient! One teensy little problem, the 800lb gorilla in the room, PTSD is a reality! I had commented yesterday, a comrade who just got back, stabbed his estranged wife, who was 9 months into her pregnancy, killing the fetus, slashed his 13 yr old son across the jugular, as he attempted to save his mother, killing him! I’ve known him for awhile, and never would have suspected it!!! Only one explanation, his Iraq Service! I’m sorry to disturb anyone, but, facts are facts, period!!!

A recent injury? Due perhaps to the useless answers provided by Von Spakovsky causing intense head banging on the desk?
Oh, Foo. In the hearing on the 4 nominations to the FEC, Sen. Bob Bennett (R-UT) reciting the Repug talking points about voting fraud, and talking up the voter ID, carrying Karl Rove’s water. Spakovsky citing HAVA (Help America Vote Act) to the effect that “Gee, we had to clean up the voter rolls” (even if a few 100,000 voters were denied the vote in the process.)

Might try rebooting holding Command-s then use fsck at the promt.
newtonusr @ 259
Cocktail?
There are other behaviors I’m noticing different, too. Previously, when quoting comments, the cursor was placed after the /blockquote tag.
Now, I have to click in the box to get a cursor.
And then there’s still the color thing on my own comments, doesn;t work on either browser, either machine (I’m on Pam’s iBook G4 now).
tw3k @ 256
This advancement is almost bad news to those of us w/ poor hearing. So many things on the net are now video (WITHOUT CAPTIONS) that we are being left behind. Can’t a way be figured out to include captions with the videos?
OnyX is like Cocktail.
solai @ 263
Wow, good point! I would think that contemporary video, even flash, would be capable of embedding a text transcript for a reader.
solai check this info about quicktime.
SteveAudio @ 262
Color for owned comments is gone on all my machines and browsers, too – it’s an artifact of the new WordPress I believe – I asked a couple of days ago.
The cursor – I only started using Firefox as my primary browser in the last 10 days – Safari acts as it has in the past for me.
Cocktail is a utility that’s free for the first 5 or 6 runs. Launch it, enter admin password, dismiss readme and click “Pilot”, then “Run”. It cleans Vmem, cache, reprebinds system, repairs permissions, etc. Reboot when it’s done (it may reboot a little slowly the first time) and retry.
Loved the clip, cept for when they went into lala land without solo or instrumentation and were BORING up into the end . . at first, it and the lyrics were compelling, though . . .
Who fucked up THIS song and video with crap production values? I mean, it coulda been Laura Bush and X*N*X GROOVE NATION after the first verse . .
And SO much promise, too . . sigh.
Is this ALL that our Rebublic has to offer as a meaningful social and public commentary?
Harumph.
(MOD NOTE: *Edited to allow through spam filter)
The color banner that highlighted our respective comments was lost in the upgrade. Not sure if the tech crew is going to be able to replace it :(
Is that the color you are talking about, SteveA?
For those who missed it: John Dean stands up for FDL at FindLaw on the 14th!
tw3k @ 266
Thank you, Suzanne. I’m so glad I couldn’t sleep. How did you find that?
solai, it was tw3k who found that – not me. nice find, tw3k, i did not know quicktime did that

newtonusr @ 269
That was cool, Dean linked FDL into his FindLaw article!!! Goes to show how far and wide the Lake’s outstanding posters are reaching out and influencing the public discourse!!!
CTuttle @ 279
I wonder what his handle is?
newtonusr @ 279
Hmmm…Newtonusr??? Will the real Dean stand up, err, delurk? ;-)
I bonked night y’all
tw3k @ 282
Nite!
tw3k, Hope you’re still here so that I can thank you properly. Thank You
Once again, I bid a fond adieu to the lake! Aloha O’e!!!

This is an important question. First of all, every website that wants to be sensitive to people with disabilities should be “Bobby Approved“. No, that’s not my Mother talking. It refers to “a Web-based tool that analyzes Web pages for their accessibility to people with disabilities.”
If you see a web page that you cannot properly understand, look for the contact webmaster link that is usually found at the bottom of the page and let them know what you need. Even if you don’t get what you need, it will help put them on notice. Also, start googling for web hearing assistance services until you find something that works for you. Have you tried headphones with volume assistance?
Thank you for asking, and be persistent with your requests! I have been working in disability research for about 20 years, so, as they say, “I hear you!”

tw3k @ 266
Thanks for the quick tip! You answered the question before I could get to it.

newtonusr @ 270
Wow! That’s two serious props from a nationally famous figure! Congratulations FDL! (and h/t to newtonusr!)

Bob Schacht @ 288
I forgot to note this part, for those who haven’t read the piece yet: Marcy!
newtonusr @ 267
Thanks, makes sense, I’ll try it.
another test, pay no attention
Cool! It worked that time (the “Submit” button.)
SteveAudio @ 292
Great. How did you fix it?
Good morning pups!
Looks like big changes over at MyDD.
newtonusr @ 293
I just restarted Firefox.
But I was having this trouble last night as well, and I restarted the computer in between, so I’m wondering if there is some interaction with the new WordPress…?
newtonusr @ 293
And the reason I have stopped using Safari as my default browser is that it doesn’t support the xhtml needed for blogging using Blogger. When I log in, many of the “buttons” are missing. It’s do-able, but a real PITA.
Good Morning!
Hear! Hear! on the Tribe speech, must see Teevee. He kicks Bush*ss!
The Griffin speech was an hour long whine about how all he ever wanted was to go back to Arkansas, lo these many years, but Bush Life just kept getting in his way. Really really, he just wanted to go home.
Poor Pitiful Tim.
And as for Caging? well, he had to look that up in the dictionary.
‘Morning, FirePups. What’s shakin’ this morning?
Missed that bit by Lawrence Tribe at the CSPAN link provided upthread; clip won’t let me restart it, either, have had to sit through that entire string of utter nonsense and bullsh*t by that little Rovian Mini-Me while fighting the urge to vomit. What an effing liar; he most certainly does know that “caging” isn’t just a term recently invented in regards to voter disenfranchisement, and he also knows that “caging” isn’t just a direct mail term.
Hell, direct mail in the Republican world is all about politics. Rove owned and operated a direct mail firm, having worked for one very early in his work history. They used the database for direct mailings for ID’ing voters then, and they still do it now. There is no separation between direct mail and how the Repugs contact voters; just ask direct mail king Richard Viguerie about it. I’d stake money on many direct mailers providing their databases as an unreported donation-in-kind to the Repugs, too; this is an area where Dems should be getting involved and doing a better job, both as a blue business and as a party function.
Agh. Now to reload that CSPAN clip again…
Nuts, now the link takes me to live CSPAN coverage.
Anybody got a static URL for that bit by Tribe?
Good morning Elliot, Rayne et al,
If you haven’t seen Sue Teller in Do Your Own Adventure back at Donita’s Spin, go back and see the videotape.
There’s a moment where she anticipates a new camera angle, well, you be the judge of funny.
I’d love to see the Tribe thing too.
Dover Bitch @ 22
I haven’t listened to this, yet
Good morning, pups. It’s Timothy Egan and Bob Herbert in the NYT today. Mr. Egan writes about baking in Phoenix and Mr. Herbert says we should have more jobs for young people, but the reverse is happening.

Coffee and tea are waiting for you, and to celebrate the fact that it rained again last evening I made waffles. Enjoy!
Marion in Savannah @ 303
Thank you Marion, waffles for my maple syrup, ymmm!
I can’t find Tribe’s speech for replay on CSPAN — yet.
It was the Harvard Law School Conference Speech by Lawrence Tribe
I just turned on washington journal & question is where do you get your political news. Great question. A caller mentioned FDL & follows the links to other sites. Excellent!
G’morning poochies. Waffels and tea sounds wonderful. Storm came through Austin a couple hours ago and expecting more rain around 3 this afternoon.
Mornin’ all!
Mornin’ twolf!
Bill Moyers Journal last night: The Libby Pardon
Elliot at 302, Thanks for bringing down the link to the radio show from Dover Bitch. I’m enjoying it.
Boston1775 @ 311
just got it goin’ myself!
Radio show with Glenn amazing.
Any ice cream for the waffles? And coffee, please.
Merrily I say unto thee, there is a new thread.
Here’s a little Tribe, talking about the visit to Ashcroft’s bedside:
below the tip of this iceberg indicates there is probably purely domestic surveillance, clearly a violation, and, indeed, criminal vioation of federal law…
It looks like we have a White House involved in serious lawbreaking, criminal lawbreaking, abuse of power…
Ted Olson served the role as witness…
Alberto Gonzales, who clearly mislead Congress when he told them there was no dispute within the administration, played the role of a gangster in all of this. The person who is now heading the Department of Justice in the United States was willing to trash the law in order to do the President’s bidding. It’s a sad day
