Digby, as usual, is right:
The shrieking harpies are about to go berserk. Scooter was denied his request to stay out of jail on appeal.
I hear there is going to be a candlelight vigil at the Lincoln memorial led by David Broder and Mary Matalin tonight. . . .
The rest of the DC insiders are planning to fan out onto TV later today to emit primal screams and flagellate themselves, after which they will gather in various secret locations to drink martinis and pray.
They shall overcome.
What are we to do as the Wurlitzer cranks up its sad song of poor, suffering Scooter? Well, here’s a few talking points (hopefully concise enough for use with friends and family) that may be helpful in responding to the most common canards of the wingnut chorus, either direct or as laundered through concerned wankers centrists like David Broder:
Bogus Spin #1: Special prosecutor Patrick Fitzgerald went after Libby even after learning that Richard Armitage had been Bob Novak’s “primary source” for his column outing Valerie Plame Wilson as a CIA employee.
Wrong. Armitage made his admission in early October 2003, nearly three months before Fitzgerald was appointed. So it should be clear that Fitzgerald wasn’t appointed just to find out who leaked to Novak. In fact, this means that — even with Armitage’s confession in hand — there was so much evidence of wrongdoing that a longtime GOP loyalist like John Ashcroft felt he had no choice but to recuse himself and allow the appointment of a special counsel.
Bogus Spin #2: Even so, Libby wasn’t the only one who leaked about Plame.
Maybe not, but it turns out that every other Bush administration who leaked did so as a result of information they got as a result of Libby’s actions. Ari Fleischer testified during Scooter’s trial that Libby told him over lunch about Plame working for the CIA, and Karl Rove reportedly told a similar story to the grand jury that indicted Libby. Meanwhile, Armitage and Bushite press flack Dan Bartlett both found out through a State Department memo that was produced in response to questions that Libby had asked a top department official about Wilson’s trip to Niger. If Libby (and his boss, Dick Cheney) had been content to reply to Wilson’s criticisms on their merits rather than by rattling cages in search of fodder for personal attacks, none of the other officials would ever have been able to leak about Plame.
Bogus Spin #3: The trial was just Libby’s word against that of a bunch of reporters.
Although three reporters did testify, they were preceded on the stand by six different government officials who each testified to having conversations with Libby about Joe Wilson’s wife before the date when Libby first claimed to have heard it from a reporter. It was these officials’ testimony, more than that of the reporters, that convicted Libby.
Bogus Spin #4: Libby was convicted for having a faulty memory.
It’s never mentioned in the mainstream media, but Scooter didn’t just “forget” telling reporters about Joe Wilson’s wife working for the CIA, and deny it when he really had told them.
No, Libby’s “faulty memory” caused him not only to deny where he had learned about Plame — a note produced in the trial showed Vice President Cheney had told him she worked in the Counterproliferation Department of the CIA (where the majority of employees are covert) — but to invent stories saying he HAD leaked to reporters when he hadn’t. He claimed to have been the first to tell Matt Cooper about Wilson’s wife, thereby covering up the fact that Karl Rove had done so. And he shielded Fleischer by falsely claiming to have told the Post’s Glenn Kessler as well, apparently trying to cover for the Post’s October 12, 2003 report that a journalist for the Post (who turned out to be Walter Pincus) had been leaked to — a news story that was found, with key passages underlined, in Libby’s files.
Thus Libby was convicted not just of perjury but of intentionally lying in order to obstruct the investigation, and rightly so.
Please add your own preferred spin repellants in the comments. And for more Plamemaniac trial fodder, here for your auditory enjoyment is Pachacutec’s report from the courthouse.

Hey!
Swopa!
Hey Swopa! I wonder if that candlelight vigil will endup like that prayerday they had where nobody showed up. I know if I was a photo-journo I’d be at the Lincoln memorial.
Swopa! Great day for justice!
Buchanan is rockin’ at Hardball
Hey Ron Christie must read FDL, Swopa. He’s on Tweety right now practically reading directly from your post. Fancy that!!
EPU’ing myself from previous thread:
Hardball -
Ron Christy: Fitz knew Armitage was the leaker. Hey Ron, did Armitage tell Cheney about Plame? Did he tell Cheney to tell Libby to tell the others? Huh???
There were several “leakers” because it was a conspiracy Ron. The fact that Armitage told someone doesn’t even mean he was THE leaker, it means he knew stuff was going down and he gossiped about it. The Cheney group seemed to plan to methodically get it out to the press. Libby lied to protect the conspiracy – plain and simple. Stop the lies.
Boston,
Notice though, 2 Republiscum arguing about Libby?
Go Buchanan!!!
Helen @ 6
Ron Christie oughta join Libby in jail. What a joke!!
Wow!! Pat is on fire!!
Joe Klein’s conscience @ 8
go figure
Buchanan: Neocons are on fire over this, because Scooter is one of their guys. Neocons means never having to say you’re sorry….wow…then he slams Wolfowitz…
Ron Christy needs to take that garbage over to Faux Noise where the sheeple hang out
Cristie with same ole’ “What about Sandy Berger”?
Pat did slip and say Nixon…
Thanks Pach! for the report and the reporting!
I thought Pachacutec would have a Gravelly voice, or maybe even sound Stoned. ;)
AnnieW @ 15
Oy vey. I have to say. The Clinton administration dealt with shady stuff too. I know from personal experience. Don’t ask me how. Thanks.
EPU’D from down under….
You have to watch Pat Buchannan smack down Ron the queen Christy on Hardball….very funny….Buchannan really hates him some Neo-CONS….BWAAAHAHAHAHAHA……..Ron was using the Sandy Burger meme to try and counter Buchannan about justice being served…..on another funny note…Ron Christy was here in Ft lauderdale 2 weeks ago cruising the leather bars and I hear he got smacked down in the bars tooo…AHhhh poor loser!
Elliott @ 17
Nahhh, he covers it up pretty well…
Can I just blend all today’s post into one comment?
Let’s just make our country too scary for other people. Immigration problem solved.
Hey Scooter fans: have fun at your collective Not My Boy! temper tantrum. I wonder if the gestapo will come to ask for your names & addresses and tell you to vacate the premises. But it’s our right to express ourselves, so go for it.
At least Libby could pay for legal counsel, receive legal counsel, know what charges he was accused of, got a fair trial by a jury of his peers (yeah, I said peers!) and enjoyed basically the full benefits of US citizenship as we’d like to continue to know it.
Rule. Of. Law!
Rule. Of. Law!
But, but, there is no underlying lie, I mean obstruction, I mean crime. Oh, never mind..
I don’t know Ron Christy, but the image of Ron Burgundy comes to mind…
Swopa/Jane/Christy/Et. Al., have you seen this?
If true, and one assumes Fox has good sources for Cheney, if nothing else (Fox being Cheney’s very favoritest news network), then doesn’t this put Cheney directly in line for impeachment charges over obstruction and rewarding obstruction, as John Dean discussed in his column at Findlaw? ( http://writ.news.findlaw.com/dean/ )
ps mods the David Broder link is busted.
Franco @ 19
Kind of sad. He’s just a guy trying to make it anyway he can.
Boston1775 @ 16
That’s funny. I just recently saw a bumper sticker:
Nixon Now.
lol.
I keep saying it and none of the democrats are getting it
we HAVE to frame the discussion correctly, we HAVE to challenge the patriotism of ANYONE that wants to protect the man that covered up treason.
it’s SIMPLE to do, we CANNOT be defensive about this we MUST take the offense
More cheers for Pach’s effort today.
No one knows what the next chapter of the story will be, but I know I can depend on FDL to get the information out.
Yes, she was COVERT!
Fox NOISE is floating a trial baloon for Darth Cheney about a pardon for his little scooter….LMAO!
LS @ 18
I don’t doubt you.
But if I get a DUI, it’s not an excuse that Paris was able to get out of hers and get it reduced to reckless driving.
If I kill someone, the fact that OJ got off doesn’t change my guilt.
Clinton getting a BJ does not mean my husband can find a 23 year old named Monica, either.
Boston1775 @ 16
Well .. he was on track ;-) Bush is headed there .. approval rating wise
Hey Swopa! How does it feel to have followed this case for so long, and to see justice done at last?
democrats really need to say things like;
“it would be mind boggling anyone wants to consider pardoning the man that covered up this exposure to our national assets…the cost in lives and data that was lost due to this willing treason is yet untold and here we have some fools that say the man should be pardoned…what kind of people think this man should be pardoned…certainly not patriots”
this is the way this discussion NEEDS to be directed
WE must orchestrate the dialogue, NOT them
the vile corrupt liar got what he deserved. i don’t care how many self-important federalist society thugs, neocon or a*p*c war pimps, and other the-law-doesn’t-apply-to-us scum came out of the woodwork.
3,500 innncocent american soldiers? cannon fodder. dead. 655,000 innocent iraqis? dead. hundreds of thousands maimed or mentally fucked. millions displaced. homeless. a fucking bloodbath. for what? to line dick cheney’s blood-soaked pockets? for another grotesque payday at bonus time at goldman sachs so some gerbil out of cornell can get a 2M bonus his first year out and whose dyed blonde wife hasn’t blown him since she procured the 5 carat engagement ring? for exxon to systematically rape the planet and sodomize us at the gas pump without benefit of soap? fuck these monsters. fuck these vicious, murderous rapacious pigs and the pushy little 30-something republicunts who run you over at whole foods with their baby carriages.
the honorable judge walton had the honor, courage, respect for the rule of law and stainless steel balls to do the right thing. thank god for you, judge walton. you have given america renewed hope in a time of great desperation today. america is in your debt.

Calling Conyers and Leahy!!!!!
Jon Capehart from the COMPost really hit it right on about Giuliani….when Giuliani was Mayor race-lations were the WORST ever when he was Mayor and he said it is time for Rudi to debate about healthcare and other issues…enough 9-11…..AMEN!
And did you ever get your leather jacket back?
Cheney has ZERO pull with Bush on this.
Bank on it
Sorry OT something to view when you have time, it is about mortars in Green Zone and violence during curfew:

Which point? #2?
Swopa, I hope that very famous right hand of yours can cover Mary Matilin holding that candle tonight. Any chance it could blog the vigil?
egregious @ 40
Yes, just in time for summer. ;)
Swopa @ Top:
Thank you, Swopa. I’ve been trying to get this point out for a week or two in comments at TNH, Swampland, and here. It’s good to finally see it on the front page.
OMG!
When I first started hearing Pach I thought I was listening to myself!
We have a very similar timbre and pitch.
Swopa @ 43
Yes #2, that comment got screwed up somehow.
I reposted it @ 45.
AnnieW @ 32
I totally agree with you – especially about your husband!!! (or my ex, who did! ;} )…I was just saying that we need to keep a balanced view of anyone who is in power (power corrupts absolutely). Bringing up Berger is wrong, because Berger has nothing whatsoever to do with this case.

you said a lot there…..read it twice. and then thought about each sentence, packed a lot in each one, wow, especially the’notmyboy’, thanks.
and want to add what i posted earlier-yeah, i know, i hate it when people do that too, until you feel the urge to do it, that is. here it is-
wow
can’t believe it finally came to pass.
My Favorite Part:
“Libby exited the court room escorted by marshalls through the door the judge uses to enter from chambers.”
pretty soon officers will be a part of his daily life, reminding him that he gave his freedom away for a bunch of schmucks.
thanks ((((fdl))))
you guys are money well spent, wish i could give you more.
1. I think, overall, this article is very good. It refutes everything, as it/we should.
2. Only as to Spin 1 and 2: I always throw up my shoulders when I hear those excuses. So what?, I ask myself. I don’t care who else disclosed the matter, or how many others disclosed the matter, that has nothing to do with Libby’s guilt. These arguments remind me of “little Johnny” who gets caught by Mom doing something wrong, and Little Johnny can only defend himself by pointing at his brother and saying “he did it too!” Just childish.
3. I always encourage folks to emphasize that Libby IS A TRAITOR. There. Say it everytime like that. Say it early, and often. Let the R team fumble around in defense. But put THEM on the back of their heels. Libby Is A Traitor.

Ay! Ay!
Damn that Monica and her feminine wiles!
JGabriel @ 45
Thanks — I think I saw one of those comments! And I’m glad you appreciate it, because I nearly forgot to include it in this post… I remembered at the last minute and took some extra time writing it up, risking the emailed wrath of the FDL powers that be. :)
Sandy Berger = Red Herringberger
Apparently Tucker Carlson didn’t hear the Libby news today.
AnnieW @ 53
LOL

ps Bustedknuckles, congratulations on your new gig, or digs, or whatever I should call it!
Scoots gets boots.
Harriett gets summoned (and Sara too).
And now, TMP reports:

Dang, heck of a day for the progressives! *G*
and forgot to say-
thanks popa swopa -
earmarked this post and already sent it out to an embattled friend of mine who runs out of talking points for the side of ‘right’.
ccmask @ 3
Maybe they could get Jeff Gannon to organize this one, too! *g*
Nice, Swopa; I think I should get this post printed on 3×5 cards to hand out to each Repug that tells me Libby was innocent or Plame wasn’t covert.
What scares me: all the little Repug children hearing the “Libby not guilty” refrain during their formative years…will we have a rash of criminals in 2 to 3 decades to show for it?
If you have a case, plead the facts.
If you don’t have a case, plead the law.
If you have either, blame Clinton and/or Berger.
BTW, if Berger is so bad, why doesn’t Bush’s hardly liberal leaning Justice Dept. going after him or is he better as a “Red Herringberger” (Thanks Boston1775!).
“If Libby (and his boss, Dick Cheney) had been content to reply to Wilson’s criticisms on their merits rather than by rattling cages in search of fodder for personal attacks, none of the other officials would ever have been able to leak about Plame.”
Ding!
If you can’t dazzle them with brilliance, baffle them with bullsh*t ; )
Newshour is on Libby now,
coming up is one of the 1st-year-law-student brief “scholars”
I guess all those emails to Dan Abrahms about lil’Tuckers daddy being on Scooter boys money brigade worked…Tucker hasn’t mentione Scooter…LMAO
and i know this is OT but has to do with last thread, so is timely, so am passing it on-
i get an email/news thing from lou dobbs/cnn show…….this part is amusing:
Disregard for immigration laws is becoming increasingly
official in local communities. The Mayor of New Haven, John
DeStefano, exposed plans for an ICE raid in his city to protect
the illegal aliens living there from deportation. In addition,
the Mayor is issuing ID cards to illegal aliens. Tune in
tonight for more on official disregard for federal policy.
Heavens Swopa, do I have the wrong hand???
Great post, Swopa.
This is the type of coordinated messaging our opponents do daily.
How can I help spread this far and wide do I dont have to throw stuff at the tv everytime one of these bogus assertions goes unchallenged?
BTW are the idiots on Tucker realizing that it is Pace, NOT PATREAUS that they are discussing!
Boston1775 @ 5
I hate myself when I agree with Buchanan but he did give Ron Christie a thrashing. Go Pat!
Brit Hume is on commercial break—and coming up “How much does sex appeal mean to a campaign?” lol
don’t forget that novak was the one who PUBLISHED the leak… multiple people were recipients of leaks who DIDN’T publish, and they were all subject to the same law, so the fact that right wingers focus on novak is irrelevant since libby leaked to other people, but even then, it’s still irrelevant because libby was prosecuted for perjury and obstruction in obscuring that fact, so all that other stuff is just a smokescreen to divert away from a legitimate crime.
If they went after Berger, then the issues surrounding him might be concluded in a way contrary to their desires. Republics prefer unresolved issues because they can be used repeatedly and spun creatively.
When my teen son heard about the vigil, he decide to have one for the Rule of Law. He’s having it tonight and getting his friends to walk around with blinfolds around their necks and t-shirts saying:
(on front)
Justice = The People Unblindfolded
(on back)
Thanks Judge Walton
He would not mind if more around the country joined in…
He is working on a website called The People Unblindfolded (Clue: and we’re not in the 29%).
Got to love 14 year olds!
Talk about your civic pride!
Boston1775 @ 69
Don’t give me your excuses; save it for the arresting officer. ;)
Annier @ 15
Yes what about Berger – let’s see Berger admitted his guilty and accepted responsibility. Libby did what . . .
I hate agreeing with Pat, too, but lately he’s been making sense.
He also shows that he’s not a hypocrite.
Though like Ron Paul, there’s way too much to disagre with before I embrace the guy.
Why didn’t Judith Miller publish?
PS: I love my new laptop!!
Badwater @ 76
but isn’t Berger’s case resolved? It just wasn’t a trial, it was plea. right?
dmac @ 68
So, as the immigration bill is being “debated” ICE is furiously rounding up people and putting them in detention centers around the country? Yesterday, the rounded up a bunch in Oregon, and those are the one’s we know about. Is it a trick by Homeland (spit) Security?
Don’t kid yourselves, the last thing Cheney or Rove wants right now is a Scooter pardon.
They’ll float it through the press though to try to keep Scooter quiet for now.
KLynn @76, that is excellent. Props to your son!
AnnieW @ 71
What did they say? Or are they going after Petraeus too?
Elliott @ 82
You are correct. My mistake.
Kmeic just gives the same old wobbly spin.
Why doesn’t Judy ask if ALLL of them including(who wrote the brief) Kmeic are part of the Federalist Society TROLL brigade.
Elliott @ 87
I don’t suppose anyone is asking him about Walton’s comment that the brief Kmeic co-signed wouldn’t be acceptable from a first-year law student.
Badwater @ 87
but the foxers and ditto heads just can’t grasp that concept.
Yeah, I know the workers rounded up are screwed, but I’m really curious as to what will happen to Del Monte, the employer.
Only something like 50 out of 650 workers were documented, which makes this look pretty darned intentional on the employers side, doesn’t it.
Did anyone just see Lou Dobbs? He just said Massachusetts is going to hell because of the vote today. Just because over 3/4 of the legislature voted not to allow an anti-gay marriage question on the ballot. Any good Lou have before just left the station. He can’t help stepping in it, can he?
Swopa @ 90
it was Judy Woodruff, and she did bring it up but he sputtered his spin around that.
Swopa @ 54
You definitely did, I can tell from the wording and line of argument. Although I’d forgotten about the Scooter/Karl lunch — nice to see that detail added. Anyway, like I said, Thanks!
(Hmm, this is like the fifth or sixth time I’ve been quoted or had my arguments cited in blogs in the past couple of months. Maybe I should think about starting a blog myself…)
AnnieW @ 91
Definitely. The workers, who get recruited, get stuck in limbo (with the neocon laws in place), while the companies that employ them get tax breaks and are freely able to lobby OUR Congress. It stinks. None of it makes any sense.
Dobbs proves on a daily basis he is a racist bigot…….but CNN loves its bigots….can anyone say Glenn Beck
Yes, there was an underlying crime.
hendricks at 36 “the vile corrupt liar got what he deserved. i don’t care how many self-important federalist society thugs, neocon or a*p*c war pimps, and other the-law-doesn’t-apply-to-us scum came out of the woodwork.

ya know, i don’t normally like ‘trash talk’ language, as a matter of fact, i hate it, esp. the c-word, but i like what you said……a lot.
Valerie Plame was COVERT.
Poor little Timmy Griffin is cryin’
public service not worth it
Wasn’t there some flak between Del Monte & Nancy Pelosi & Fox News not too long ago?
Elliott @ 66
Oh man, I hope they ask how he feels about Walton’s “1st year law school” description. *That* would be hilarious.
The Sandy Berger gambit is idiotic. He got caught and is being punished.
How does it benefit a Republican to bring it up?
What you’re telling me is: the punishment of Scooter is therefore, well, appropriate.
Elliott @ 100
Better coverage here.
expect crying from the right’s tear ducts on the order of Terry Schiavo.
Elliott @ 99
Uncanny. They all look like Rove mini-me’s. What is up with that?? There is something really strange about this. I had never seen a picture of him. Jeeeesh!

wonder if he is that emotional when he helps Unka Karl ruin peoples lives….I DOUBT IT!

Aw. Wibble Timmy doesn’t realize, it’s that Public Service is too good for him.
Tucker: Libby was not convicted of ANYTHING that had to Valerie Plame’s case. Shoot me NOW!!
LS @ 107
It is uncanny..most are round faced, flabby white boys.
Eureka Springs @ 105
yes, Eureka Springs, that a much better link, I’m waiting for the video to load. Thanks!
If they had to make use a template for political operatives clones, why on earth did they use Rove as a model….I just don’t get it…Sampson, Alvin, Tim Griffin…there must be more…tons more…
Arca @ 84
I can understand why rove doesn’t want a scooter pardon. But why would vice-president-for-life cheney not want one? Seems like he’s got more to lose …
Gawd…maybe they’ve been breeding baby Roves for years…Ewwwww
Good post, Swopa, and great counter-arguments.
Hate to nitpick, but following sentence was clumsy; Thus Libby was convicted not just of perjury but of intentionally lying in order to obstruct the investigation, and rightly so.
Seems to mean he was right to obstruct.
Thus Libby was convicted, and rightly so, not just of perjury but of intentionally lying in order to obstruct the investigation.
lee5 @ 114
Because as I understand it, Scooter can no longer claim the 5th if called to testify.
Besides…..
There was no Underlying Blow Job!
And Monica’s too. What does this bring to mind???
LS @ 114
nah, breeding’s too good for them. all purely artificial, revenge of the rove-clones …
This is a very sad day for lying sacks of sh*t.
LS @ 100
but LS that is using facts . . . these Friends of Libby just hope if they repeat it over and over they can make it true. Didn’t they get us into a war that way?
Gotta go. later. Thanks Swopa!
Charles Gibson is an ass. He just said that Judge Walton was receiving death threats from both Scooter supporters and detractors..
LS @ 115
Kinda like The Boys From Brazil, eh?
pwrlght @ 120
Yup. So I counter attack:
Valerie Plame was COVERT!! Repeat, repeat, repeat!
the thing I’ve been wondering about is the impact on the other loyal bushies. scooter’s a big deal and if Dear Leader is willing to let him go to the big house, then the other folks whose hands are definitely dirty have got to be worried. Someone has to break at some point and come clean about all this …
Bill @ 118
it was an Underling Blow Job
Elliott @ 123
Crossed my mind.
My favorite is from the Jet Set and Jet Set Wannabes. Who’s Scooter and what kinda name is that? They vote.
Pseeew! It’s 107 degrees.
lee5 @ 114
If Scooter got off he become open game for questioning again and he can’t lie or he goes back to the slammer.
He could show Cheney and Rove’s direct involvement in outing Plame.
After the 11th circuit let Gore v Bush go to the Supreme Court, I have no faith in our circuit courts. Bush probably already knows that they will keep him out of jail while waiting an appeal.
Elliott @ 123
Having bred horses for years, very easy to do. Seriously, I would like to see a “collage” of all of these guys. The resemblance is quite a coinkidink.

Cozumel @ 134
And that proves.. what, exactly?
Quick! Need some help here. Minutes ago, Charlie Gibson on ABC news reported that Walton had received “so much hate mail from Libby supporters and critics…” If he’s implying that the left sent hate mail to Walton I want to see a direct quote. Do we have one anywhere????
Thanks in advance.
JGabriel @ 94
That probably is a sign!
Just so I don’t get sued for plagiarism :), I actually made a version of point #2 on a wrong-wing blog back in February. Your similar comment at TNH popped it back into my head as an important argument, though.
LS @ 112
More proof that: Love is blind.

I love your son’s idea of a vigil for the Rule of Law — but, honestly, I think what Digby wrote was just brilliant snark. So good, I fell for it at first, too, posted a comment taking it seriously. Read it again…I’m pretty sure it’s snark.
But, tell your son we do need all the support for Rule of Law we can get. Especially from young people.

Ahhh…the old 2 degrees of separation. :)

Huh. Never heard a gay conection, but it was somewhat in the news in the ’70’s – Nixon was a member or a guest there. It’s definitely all male, Skull-and-Bones-mysterious — you know, that white guy fraternity thing of I’m-a-member-and-you’re-not= I’m-cool-and-you’re-not.
Have I mentioned that Valerie Plame was COVERT???
As long as one nutjob sent a letter threatening Walton if he doesn’t send Libby to jail it will be reported that way. 100 to 1 ratio will not matter.
Kind of like everything being bipartisan because Joe Lieberman signed on.
Highly unlikely that Judge Walton received hate mail from Libby critics. That doesn’t make sense. More likely: the Disney/ABC News operation is being extra careful to be bi-partisan. It’s all the rage, you know.
tejanarusa @ 151
————————–
Isikoff told Maddow that Nixon stopped going there because it was”too gay”…just reporting what he said!
Boston1775 @ 149
Kinda…That’s the way I read it, too. But I want to write good ol’ Charlie with a real quote from Walton and tell him to take that back. ;)
Didn’t Pach say he’d have audio?
Just a little p’o’d
I’ve been using this response on the dittoheads at work who try those arguments with me:
“From the moment Cheney, Libby, or anyone else at the White House discovered that Valerie Plame worked for the Directorate of Operations at CIA, it was their sworn duty as an officer of the United States government to DIE rather than allow that information to be reach anyone without a clear need to know it, much less to pass it along to reporters, hoping it would be published. The fact that they repeated it to anyone at all should have them tried and executed for treason.
My authority for that statement is President George H W Bush. Take your whining about ‘no underlying offense’ to him. I’m busy.”
So far, none of them have come back, and the water cooler discussions have become decidedly muted on the subject. It seems particularly effective with military veterans.
LS @ 152

Gay, in a snooty, self hating gay, kind of way.
Franco @ 147
who knows what he believes … he might just do the bigot deal for pay … :-(
pwrlght @ 156
Did I hear you correctly? Sandy Berger pleaded guilty!!! Yes, and btw Valerie Plame was covert.
Audrey @ 156
Pach’s audio link is in up in the post
Boston1775 @ 149
Pach’s audio is at the end of the post up top. I know, I didn’t see it the first time, either.
Franco @ 155
LOL!
Naturally, in the ’70’s, reporters doubtless knew of the “gayness” but it was one of those things they wouldn’t write about.
Good to see you again Swopa!
I say that the more desperate (myopic) Cheney becomes, the better the opportunity that the truth will out. Because a lot has been made of Bush’s little brain, but I have to say, given Cheney’s fuck-ups, he is none too swift either. Just because he doesn’t habitually butcher the english language, it doesn’t mean he is all so swift.
He is in the cross-hairs, and he knows it. The best he can hope for is to play out the clock. He will go down in history as the most notorious dumb-fuck of a
presidentvice-president in history.Naturally, Plame was covert. I’m not even sure that this is in question any longer, outside of Western Wingnuttia.
OT, but this just pisses me off … results of the 2000 coup rolling out in SCOTUS … nytimes linky
WHOA!!! Schuster is suggesting Scooter FLIP to stay out of jail!!
Swopa @ 140
Oh, good lord, plagiarism never entered my mind, I’m sorry I gave you that impresssion.
It was more the line of argument that I recognized, with just a few similiar phrases. And that would be natural anyway, given that we were making the same argument. Which I can see, from the post you cite, that we were both coming to the same argument from only slightly different starting points. (It looks like you started your analysis with the meeting on the plane, where I started with Armitage/Woodward.)
Anyway, as I said earlier, I’m just glad to see it on the front page.
Slothrop @ 154
Tell me about it. Still never fails to chap my grits when they do it though. I’ve had regular correspondence with them over the years. Valrie Plame was COVERT and Sandy Berger PLEADED GUILTY.
Drive By Posting (unfortnately)
First Fox News Indicates Cheney WILL LOBBY HEAVILY FOR A LIBBY PARDON!
(never mind that this may actually put him in an impeachable situation if things go wrong)
It hit me while I was out shopping. Why all the very loud, very obnoxious Pardon Libby chanting, particularly from high level folks who ought to know better? Answer:
Libby is CHENEY’s guy, NOT BUSH’S!
And Bush and Cheney don’t get along so well these days. Bush just might allow Libby to be thrown to the wolves as a WARNING TO CHENEY. There has been some indication of a power struggle between Cheney and his people and Bush and his people over attacking Iran. Given how lockstepped Bush’s admin has been up to now, the only way this is happening is because, to put it bluntly, Cheney is IGNORING BUSH’S ORDERS. And Bush cannot just dump Cheney for no reason, but he can, “with deep regret” allow Cheney to be impeached after a whole pile of offenses are piled up around him. By letting Libby get tossed under the bus, Bush lets Cheney know that if he goes too far, Bush won’t let hesitate to let the wolves circling the Administration have him.
So why the chorus?
To put pressure on Bush 41, that’s why!
Bush 43 is still a Bush. The Libby supporters are all outsiders from the Bush camp IFAIK but they are all leaders who by their outspokenness are inherently threatening BushCo itself. Because if the middle and highlevel water carriers stop doing that for BushCo, the family’s fortunes will go south big time.
So that’s what about to collide in the Libby pardon struggle: Bush wanting to control and warn Cheney, and BushCo wanting some kind of gesture to the water carriers so they won’t feel the need to retaliate against the family.
Popcorn is in the microwave….
LS @ 182
News to the right-wing smear machine as well, but yup – fact is: Valerie was covert and Sandy pleaded guilty.
Rinse, repeat….
pwrlght @ 174
I agree. As Marcy pointed out at TNH, Scooter’s only real profession now is going to be as a rightwing victim.
If he flips now, he’ll lose that income stream. Although, to be fair, it has happened. John Dean and David Brock have both made admirable post-rightwing turn-arounds by joining the land of the sane and fighting the good fight.
And Scooter’s wife is reportedly a Dem. If she has any influence on him, Scooter could – as unlikely as it seems – become one of the good guys.
I really, really doubt it, though.

I seem to recall hearing about these powerful movers and shakers walking around nekkid in the woods…but it was portrayed as a he-man bonding thing.
Okay, back from reading the link–Looks like Justice Souter will soon be called a liberal:
The federal judge in the case granted an exception to a rule that granted the petitioner 17 days to file, instead of the 14 allowed in the rule. Here’s Souter’s commentary – deadly, imho:
“As a member of the federal judiciary, I cannot help but think that reliance on our orders is reasonable,” Justice Souter wrote.
We are living in Alice’s Wonderland. I expect to get up tomorrow and see the sun is rising in the West. Sigh.
Alfred Kelgarries @ 188
I agree with everything you say, but you have the wrong Bush. This is a showdown between Bush the father and Cheney the wanna-be-father (who never had a son of his own, nevermind Mary, now that she has produced a grandson named “Cheney.”)

But wait Ron Christie said that Plame wasn’t covert and Berger is getting away with murder (or insert any convenient crime here).
I don’t know maybe I should listen to someone who use to work for Scooter Libby and wrote a letter to Walton telling him not to punish Libby.
Or maybe Christie is a hack with no soul.
I’m not sure if I mentioned that Irve Scooter Libby was sentenced for Obstruction of Justice of the investigation of CIA COVERT AGENT VALERIE PLAME AND BY DEFAULT THE COMPANY SHE WORKED THROUGH TO PROTECT THE UNITED STATES FROM THE PROLIFERATION OF WMD’S…and Sandy Berger pleaded guilty. hmmmm … was someone guilty? and was someone else covert?
Well the NewsHour just came on here so after you guys saw it above. It was my impression that they pretty much let Kmiec one of the 12 in the amicus brief run out the clock repeating the same old lies. Rather than shutting him up and getting a response/rebuttal, they did one of their famous “Well, we will have to leave it there,” with the lies unanswered. Way to go, NewsHour.
LS, are you telling me that: Valerie Plame was covert and Sandy Berger pleaded guilty?!?
pwrlght @ 217
Oh hell what kind of world do we live in when Buchanan has to point out that Libby lied his ass off?
Hugh @ 220
Hey Hugh – just tell them Plame was COVERT and Berger PLEADED GUILTY.
Speaking of Bohemian Grove, I grew up a few minutes away from there (my brother was close friends with a guy who’s father was a regular) and the rumor was always that prostitution was rampant. For what its worth.
Supreme Court Justices are subject to Articles of Impeachment.
The Federalist Society advocates and seeks to bring about overthrow of the Republic and the Constitution.
In the Congress and the Executive Branch, Federalist revolutionaries move to destroy the United States Government.
We gasp at how they are fail to carry out oversight and regulation..and…then find this was the deliberate plan.
Reagan took David Stockman “to the woodshed” for simply revelaing the real plan of his work in the Exeuctive Branch was to force implosion of the Federal Budget.
Scalia, Alito, and Rodgers trash Constitutional protections and Federal regulations for the same reason Stockman trashed the budget numbers – they have joined the institution (in their case, the Supreme Court) precisely to destroy it.
And to further the neocons’/Federalist coup.
How do we save the Republic without Impeaching the Federal Judges who replace the Constitution with the Federalists’ dictatorship?
tejanarusa @ 176
Fern @ 208
Which presents an interesting drama. As I understand it, Harriet herself is an attorney, which means that she well understood the legal jeapardy he placed himself into–and by extension–her family. My bet, is that on some level, when Libby enters the Fed Pen, and she has some time to reflect on her own, she will begin to find a way to articulate her rage at what has become of her “nice” little life. Or she will find that she has been completely frozen out–if is she already isn’t. My guess is that her court room tears are more complicated than they seem to the media. She has been very invested in keeping her
husbandchildren’s father out of the slammer, hence the reams of barbeque and football letters.Reid just announce the immigration bill will be revived and brought back to the Senate floor. I guess Bush’s little visit worked.

-GSD
Phoenix Woman is upstairs
pwrlght @ 227
as far as I can see, this bill is fundamentally evil. Intent is to create a permanent underclass w/o citizenship rights. Reid bringing it back to the floor is just one more betrayal… I’d love to be wrong, but it sure seems like a stinker
Seems that Wolf Blitzer doesn’t get that Valerie Plame was Covert and protecting the world from the proliferation of Weapons of Mass Destruction, and that this administration blew her cover endangering everyone she ever worked for!!! He also doesn’t get that Scooter Libby Obstructed Justice by lying, so that the Prosecutor couldn’t clearly see who conspired to make that outing happen. Oh, I also heard that Sandy Berger pleaded guilty.
FYI, new thread
Fern @ 208
True. Though one’s influence does tend to increase when one becomes the prisoner’s primary link to the outside world. If the wingers want to be *sure* that Scooter remains on their side, they’d better be prepared to visit – a lot – and be very, very accomodating.
Somehow, I don’t see Dick, et. al., making time in their busy schedules to visit Club Fed in Fuckin’ Boondocks, Pennsylvania, or wherever the hell Scooter ends up.
That said, I basically agree with you. I don’t really see Scooter doing a turnaround and flipping on his Bush admin buddies either.
But if Scooter actually does go to jail, the emotional, psychological, and physical incentives to flip will all be in place. *That’s* probably what has the right wing all worried and hysterical.

The Bohemian Grove is and has always been a place where the men who run this country, financially and politically, come to hang and network, without the presence of anyone who would blow the whistle on the subversive nature of their collaborations. A summer camp for the elite, with nubile camp followers for late-night extra curricular activities.

You’re right, impeachment of a couple of judges may be necessary. I hate to think of it, recalling all the nutjob efforts to “impeach Earl Warren” (billboards everywhere in my Hoosier youth). It may be the only way – of course, the problem will be proof.
And I say we start by making it really clear to those who enabled Alito’s confirmation. No more free pass to those who tell us they voted against his confirmation. NOT. GOOD. ENOUGH.

The bridges and buildings here in Saint-Petersburg still have bullet scars from the revolution 90 years ago and nothing at all in the world has changed.
Capitalism spans the globe; the thought of a truly international marriage of unions such as European with American is laughed at while an entity like the WTO presides over the rape and robbery of the resources of every country that cannot defend itself against the crimes.
International socialism is feared and ridiculed while global capitalism rampages on untouched.

Judy Woodruff just let Kmiek run on and on and on. It was disgusting. Since they had an attorney that signed the amicus brief for Libby they could have at least had an attorney fimilar with the case, such as Christy.
Wow go watch Romeny be an asshat at a Chicago fundraiser.
http://cbs2chicago.com/politic…..95525.html
short explanation: Libby should be pardoned – Fitzgerald abused his power but he is not calling for Fitz to be disciplined (smart thing in Chicago).
Note to Romney: If you believe Fitz abused his power why aren’t you calling for disciplinary action. Huh??
Pachacutec,
Well spoken.
AnnieW @ 15
What about Sandy Berger? What did he do?
While on their way to the bank, I.M. “Weasel” Little and his pals rape a girl scout and club her to death. Weasel isn’t the gang’s leader, wasn’t the first to penetrate the victim and his bat didn’t strike the fatal blow. Too bad for Weasel, he’s slow, and is the only gang member arrested.
Although slow, Weasel thinks he’s swift and tries to befuddle detectives by sending them off on a wild goose chase in the wrong direction. He succeeds in helping the other gangsters escape, but the plan backfires and Weasel receives additional charges.
Weasel’s defenders insist he committed no crime because the girl scout was no longer a virgin when his turn came, his DNA wasn’t found inside her corpse and she actually killed herself. At trial, all Weasel’s stories and alibis are proved false and he is convicted of multiple crimes based on overwhelming evidence, including testimony by fellow gang members incriminating him.
High-ranking gangsters put aside turf battles, align together and write the court letters vouching for Weasel’s integrity. They become upset when the judge questions their street cred and laughs at them. Everyone memorizes the script. While competing on the “Gang War Survivor” television reality show, Ruly “lawn-order” Giuly raps out, “I know law so cut the Weasel loose cause there is no crime, the prosecutor is crazy, the jury is stupid and the judge is a fool.” Following up with another familiar rap, Ruly chants, “I know evil so make me boss cause you are scared lazy stupid fools and I will make you think you safe.”
Since Weasel didn’t rat, the judge orders him caged until he develops a taste for cheese doodles. All eyes now look for the reigning supreme gang lord to be decider.
[Mod Note; that’s an interesting analogy, perhaps next time a less crude one would be more appropriate.]
MarkH @ 248
He took copies of classified documents from the National Archive hid them in a constructin site and then later destroyed them. He was caught by an employee at the archive. Berger pleaded guilty and showed remorse and was given probation. He also voluntarily gave up his law license.
Many REP are using the GOP talking point that what is happening to Libby is unfair because Berger isn’t going to jail and that somehow what Berger did was worse than Libby. But that talking point ignores the fact that Berger confessed, pleaded guilty and showed remorse for his actions – something Libby has NOT done.
Okay, call me a voice groupie..but I really like listening to Pachacutec.
Then again, maybe it’s just what he’s saying that’s got me smiling :-)
Thanks to all of y’all for covering this…it’s been a good day.
pwrlght @ 250
That’s weird. He took documents and destroyed them? What was in the documents he, a former National Security Adviser, would want destroyed?
That certainly doesn’t sound as serious as disclosing a NOC CIA agent and rolling up their WMD surveillance network.
“Armitage made his admission…” Should read, “Armitage made his claim…” that he had been Novak’s primary source.

Klynn at 76:
I love your son’s idea of a vigil for the Rule of Law — but, honestly, I think what Digby wrote was just brilliant snark. So good, I fell for it at first, too, posted a comment taking it seriously. Read it again…I’m pretty sure it’s snark.
But, tell your son we do need all the support for Rule of Law we can get. Especially from young people.
I told him. His response, ” Hey are you listening to the news — of course they are holding vigils – all over the news for crying out lound!
He was correct. I said, “Go for it kiddo, it’s your own kind of snark!”
“Libby doesn’t deserve to be jailed.”
Fact: Libby let Judith Miller sit in jail for two months. He had the power to free her, and he didn’t. (Apparently her attorney ginned up a “release” from him finally– not clear that he actually released her, and anyway, why wait so long?). He thought it was fine to have her jailed. (Yeah, I know, she isn’t a heroine, but still– he was to blame, being the leaker, and he let her do the time.)
He actually was convicted of crimes. (She wasn’t.) All he had to do was say the word and she would have been free– but he didn’t say that word. Why we should feel sorry for him, I don’t know. He didn’t feel sorry for his friend and leakee.
So, Libby is going to jail and has been given some time to put his affairs in order before going to the Big House.
In the meantime, he might prepare himself for life on the inside, which is why I suggest he think about getting some TATTOOS…so he’ll fit in.
Suggestions for a Libby jail-house tattoo?
How about one honoring the person most responsible for his getting sent up, the person Libby has been protecting by perjuring himself and lying to federal prosecutors?
A tattoo on Libby’s chest, maybe, of a heart with the words “I LOVE DICK_cheney” or just a basic tattoo stating “I”D DO ANYTHING FOR DICK_cheney,” including going to jail with these tattoos on oneself.
Aw, c’mon, Scooter. You’ll need tattoos where you’re going, just to identify to which gang you belong. In your case, the DICK_cheney gang.
JGabriel @ 190
Does DeGenova remind you of a “lounge lizard” or is it just me?
Another bogus talking point:
“This is criminalization of politics.”
Of course just the opposite is true, Libby (and maybe Goodling, and Doan, and Rove, etc…)was criminalizing politics by actively outing Plame.
Ok bear with me here: 9 different people testified that they found out about Plame via Scooter, so that means that he spoke to 9 people about it right? The man doesn’t recall?? So sorry you ridiculous wingnuts spouting that crap off, but no matter how busy you are thinking about “REALLY IMPORTANT STUFF” like monkeying up the Iraq war, outing a covert CIA agent etc. you are going to recall talking to 9 FREAKING PEOPLE about a topic!!! So now, I’m thinking, perhaps I should be concerned for his health? This man obviously needs to go to a doctor, he may have early onset Alzheimer’s…., or perhaps serious head trauma like an anvil fell on him and gave his noggin a boo boo…. or a brain tumor is eating away at his memory banks…? Nah, he’s just a liar that got caught!
But Fauxnews had reported that the Libby jury returned a not guilty verdict. I saw it on the TeeVee. Oh well, I guess we’ll never know for sure.
Foobar @ 262
Exactly – often when not-so-well-known Repub members of Congress are indicted or accused of an impropriety, Fox will “mistakenly” label them a Dem in the streaming news ribbon running beneath video. The last time I recall seeing it done was when Florida Repub Mark Foley resigned after his email messages exposed him to be a pedophile preying on congressional pages. Fox continued to identify Foley as a Dem on the ribbon for 24 hours after the “mistake” was pointed out on the Daily Show.
