Ha! It’s mine!
You and your zed are looking kinda lonely there Tex
… she says, just as the crowd bursts in the door …
TRex!!!
ha ha.
scooter belongs in prison and we dont need to give bush immigration reform as part of his legacy. we should look at it again in 6 months and see if the current program is working.
Welcome to Late Late Nite everybody.
I’ll never get caught up on the previous thread. Anything important that I should know?
Again, close but no cigar.
Interesting song, Trex. I’d never heard it, but it does seem appropriate. :)
That’s rather an odd video, but very appropriate. Nicely done TRex!
EPU’d
You gotta love Freddy Boy!
Ha ha ha ha ha ha…. I’m sorry, I know it is impolite to laugh at another’s misfortune but all I can think of is Irv hearing the clanking of the cell door behind him. Ha ha ha ha ha ha
Irv’s gonna change his tune and start singing the Fitzgerald shuffle.
TRex @ 8
You missed dinner. But feel free to join us for dessert.
TRex @ 8
Yeah. RJHillhouse has a new book coming. OUTSOURCED. It’s about the outsourcing of our CIA. Looks really good.
Libby was really Cheney’s boy, and the entire idea of fighting back against Joe Wilson’s op-ed was a Cheney plan, or so it seems.
What if Bush thought it was a stupid plan all along? What if he has no intention of issuing a pardon? Bush would pardon Rove in a heartbeat, if it ever came to that. But not for someone who isn’t in his circle of friends.
Maybe that’s why the pundits have been spinning themselves into a frenzy over a pardon, because they’re trying to pressure Bush for Cheney. It seems like a dumb way to do it, but they’ve never asked for my advice anyway.
TexB @ 10
It’s a brand new band, I think. I can’t even remember where I saw the video, now, but it cracked me up. There just something about punk rock Irish music. The two genres go so well together, like whiskey and coke.
It’s great for about four or five songs. Then I start to feel like I’m stuck in a drunken St. Patrick’s Day melee in a tiny bar and I’m just…trying…to get out…the door…
Lemon squares i love lemon squares.. thanks tex
I know what you mean, TRex. I don’t have any desire to go back and listen again. But it was appropriate for the day!

Hi dad, I’m calling you from jail
Hi dad, happy birthday, I’m in jail
Jail, jail, hi dad
All those years, I’m in jail now
I’m in jail, I like it here
It’s nice, I like it
Hello dad, I’m in jail
Hello, hello dad, hi, I’m in jail

I know the idea is out there, I’ve said it a few times, other also: if Libby is pardoned then it is like a grant of immunity to Libby so that either Fitz or Congress can continue the investigation.
If the main charge is obstruction, then obstruction is something which will continue after any pardon. And a pardon cannot excuse future acts, you still are a citizen with duties to tell the truth, etc. So a pardon could be a temporary thing for Libby if anyone gets an itch to continue looking for answers.
But this time, the investigators will be armed with judicial findings that Libby lied and obstructed. So he can’t use the same story he gave last time. He either has to come clean or come up with another story which is somehow consistent with all the other evidence.
I’m betting that Bush doesn’t pardon Libby, and when he doesn’t his friends will hold him out as a brave soul who took one for the cause.
I also think that the main reason for all the fuss over Libby is simply because this crowd simply cannot bring themselves (collectively) to give in on this central point: being that the (imagined) ends justify the means. The exact opposite of the rule of law.
Why does Libby keep getting time before going to jail? (sorry if this is a silly question, Am really ignorant of the law) Would have been so much nicer to see him taken directly from the court room.
People are still downstairs talking about how this contracting of spies is an impeachable offence.
Suzanne @ 12
Well he is reputed to be married to a democrat with young children – would he throw the wife and kids aside to protect the most criminal administration in our history? Wotta sap!
Conyers Judiciary committee up on CSPAN2 right now with a replay of testimony on confidentiality of the press– apparently about the kinda thing that Judy Miller went to jail for not revealing her source. “Reporter Shield” law.

I’d like to know the answer to that one myself. Mere mortals go directly.

Debbie(aussie) @ 24
They booked him but the bureau of prisons (or some such) has to process him. Mid-August is what I heard for him to actually be imprisoned.
TexB, was trying to send a message with my “confirm friend” over at facebook, some kind of glitchy said I couldn’t send, then I found out I had sent 3 messages. Sorry! Ain’t technology great ;~)
It seems non violent, white collar criminal types often go several weeks between sentencing and entering prison. As long as they aren’t a flight risk, they’re given time to get their affairs in order.
Jack Abramoff got several months, but then, he was cooperating with the feds.
thanks for the replies. It just doesn’t seem fair. A couple of weeks, maybe, but eight, ridiculous!!!
NewDealFarmGrrrlll @ 31
Imagine how pleased I was to get three messages the same night! :) Glad to see you over there.
Part of the delay is, iirc, in the federal system, they like to determine WHERE they are going imprison ya before you are in their custody, if at all possible.
Gosh, it’s good to “see” you guys.
Good to be back on the job.
TheOtherWA @ 32
And common addict/dealers like my sis-in-law don’t even get 10 minutes to arrange for the care of their children! (State court, but even so.)

I think it is like the gap between hotel check-out and check-in: they have to get clean sheets and towels, restock the mini-bar, put a chocolate on the bed, etc.
TomJ @ 46
order the proper tennis balls and get the right golf clubs, find out if he gets early seating for dinner or does the late seating. sux when one has to be one’s own caddie but that is hard time in the federal country club system.
Terre @ 29
That is fun, Terre!
Awhile back, Wonkette had a contest for Libby’s prison nickname. My fave was “Fugitive from a Cheney Gang”.
TomJ, Who would have thought it would take sooo looong to change the sheets etc.
Debbie(aussie) @ 24
From what Christy said earlier, this is the usual procedure for people tried in federal court who are not a danger to society (meaning not an immediate danger; being likely to start unnecessary wars in the long term doesn’t count.) Rather than having to find somewhere temporary to stash him immediately, they let him wait until they’ve determined where he’s going to go permanently.
Since the sentence is the amount of prison time, not exactly when he serves it, that’s the way it works. It’s annoying in this case because it probably contributes to his sense of entitlement, but that’s the way it is.
stibbert @ 49
I vote for “Scooter”.
I wanna see Scooter and Shooter in side by side cells. Why, they could even be cellmates.
TRex, I gotta question for ya.

And don’t get me started on Gary Oldman as a Texas shit-kicker…
Walton and Fitz may have sent a subtle warning about the jeopardy that Libby may face if the Appeals Process results in a retrial.
Walton: Exlpaining again his reasoning for 30 months sentence. Citing the guidelines and the concurrent service of sentences for different counts.Fitz: Says concurrent 30 month sentences are okay.Walton: I’m told I don’t have to do concurrent sentences according to the guidelines but it seems this current ruling is appropriate.Fitz: Agrees.
It seems to me that Libby, if he receives a retrial that subsequently fails yet again…would be making himself subject to even greater penalties. Walton said that he had issued concurrent service but could have stretched things out, quite legitimately, by issuing consecutive sentences.
I’m such appellants lack of remorse, absence of cooperration with the AUSA on the issues that were obstructed by his perjuries, and continued misuse of the legal system would weigh heavily on an increased sentence if he lost a retrial on some remanded point.
Loo Hoo. @ 90

Hope not, Kirk. He may have to disguise himself. I see trench coats and fake mustaches.
Loo Hoo. @ 30
If Bush is intent on pardoning him before he goes to the slammer THAT would be just about the worst time for him to do so…in the midst of the new debate regarding the extended Iraq Supplemental.
On the other hand, if Bush declares “We Won in Iraq…we’re bringin’ the boys home” that would provide cover for the pardon :- )
Maybe THATS what he’s going to do!
[I actually think that instead he’ll tie the pardon in with an air attack on Iran…if you are gonna make bad news its best to release it all in one fell swoop and a lot of it will be hidden].
Patrick 4/4 @ 101
ok, leave him out & leave you with this:

Priest Vito Cornelius: Evil begets evil, Mr. President.

TribeScribe @ 115
I liked the Cockroach-Cam.
But, if a pardon is issued, then he has to testify in any investigation (civil, criminal or congressional), which is not a good thing for boosh. A pardon prohibits Libby from taking the 5th amendment on the subject he was pardoned regarding. He would have to tell the truth and the “I don’t recall” shit won’t fly any better than his lies did.
I posted a little longer version of the as-usual bizarre slobbering from Chris Matthews about Fred Thompson where the pipsqueak from The Weakly Standard makes about the only valid point of that segment when he refers to a speech at Hoover.org where Thompson puts Roe V. I could see the latter happening, but, I believe fervently that a pardon would only exacerbate Shrub’s legal problems, I believe there would be Obstruction of Justice charges that could be forthcoming with said pardon!!! :-)
Suzanne @ 118
Which likely means that barring some “Gerald Ford” type Republican being elected the situation could be rather grim for the Bush cabal. They are actually better off with Libby sitting in jail than compelled to testify without his 5th Amendment protections.
Maybe Fitz knew this all along ;-)
Suzanne @ 118
Damn, great minds…, could a Book Salon be feasible, Suzanne??? Jez wunderin!!!
Maybe Fitz knew this all along ;-)
Fitz strikes me as the kinda guy who would know.
I hope so, CT.
I would not want to play pok*r with Fitz. That man keeps his cards very close to his chest. He knows this case even better than Marcy and Jane and we know the wealth of knowledge they have.
Suzanne @ 123
I’ll ‘poke’ ya, if I get a thumbs up from from Doc RJ, we could work from there! *g*
CT watch where you poke. You could put your eye out with that thing (said in best Ralphie’s mom voice)

Okay, but remember I’m well trained and I know how to use it!!! If it’s all systems go on this end, would ya’ll be game?
John Tully, good stuff! I saw that tonight on Hardball, and couldn’t believe my ears. Pat Buchanan has been sounding reasonable these days.
CT, I’m not the one who makes those decisions. I would suggest making your recommendation to the Lakes Book Salon Editor, James Trumm via his email: jftrumm AT gmail DOT com.
CT, direct James Trumm to the last thread, and ask him to read the links. If it works out, would we all have to drink a Hawaiian blend of one sort or another during the Salan?
Isn’t a Mai Tai a Hawaiian blend?
Two more songs for Scooter to practice.
Humble Pie “30 days in the Hole”
Grand Funk Railroad “Inside Lookin’ Out”
Maybe he can learn “Mean Mistreater” while he’s there
This is not good. According to Americablog, Abbas has declared a state of emergency and dissolved their government.
True, Scooter could be not only an author, but a singer!
Stratocuiser, may i add Folsom Prison Blues to the Scooter soundtrack?
Loo Hoo. @ 130
So they say, I wouldn’t know definitively, however, it is a kick-ass drink, expensive too!!! Suzanne, I shall utilize my chain of command, Ma’am(snappy salute rendered)!!! *g*
Hadn’t thought about that one, but it’s perfect. Any others?
Isn’t a Mai Tai a rum drink? Slight recollection from my younger days…
I think a Dr Hillhouse Book Salon would be a very sobering eyeopener to the destruction of our intelligence community by those sworn to protect it.

thanks for the link, wigwam. i can’t wait until my book arrives, should be here by monday.
Suzanne @ 132
You are quite right.
A lot can be traced to Israeli intervention over the years. In the early days, Israel funneled money and guns to Hamas as a counterbalance to Fatah. Now they’re supplying money and guns to Fatah because they don’t like Hamas. And of course, Israel sends in its tanks and demolishes homes and shops whenever and wherever they want to. And the Palestinians are acting like two Sicilian mobs competing for territory in Chicago, because Palestinian leadership is too compromised and weak to knock heads together and develop a unified leadership.
I wish Israel would just release Mahmoud Bargoutti from his jail cell. He’s about the only one left who could unify Fatah and Hamas enough to form a government of Palestinian unity.
A sad day for all.
Bob in HI
CTuttle @ 139
It already has. Hamas now controls Gaza, and Fatah now controls the West Bank. Which just about scuttles any idea of a unified single Palestinian government.

Link help:
Hit the link button over the window where you type your comment. Delete the http:// that is there.
Go over to the link you are interested in bringing here. Highlight it with your mouse, then click Control-C to copy.
Come back to the fdl comment window, click on the window, and then do Control-V to paste. Presto chango!
If you have trouble picking up the link from the other place, you might be able to find it at the top of your screen in the address bar. Again Control-C to copy, then bring it back to fdl.
Here’s the old fashioned way to do links:
You type
[a href=”
http://www.reallylonglinkthatyouarebringingtofdl
“]
Short title
[/a]
For example here’s the link to fdl:
[a href=”http://www.firedoglake.com”]FDL[/a]
and when you replace [ and ] with the carats over comma and period, looks like:
FDL
Try it!
Suzanne @ 150
Let’s hope it’s this and not, I. Fought The Law (and I. won)
I was reading about the internal investigation in Gonzo by the Justice Dept. just now, and started to think about a few things about Ford’s pardon on Nixon.
It is now “generally accepted” that Ford did the right thing so that the country could move on. (I don’t know who decided that, but that’s what MSM seems to think.) But all these people, Cheney and Rummy in particular, got their start under Nixon. If Nixon has been properly prosecuted, along with his chronies, and there had been actually penalties doled out, don’t you think Cheney would have learned a different lesson than the one he did; ie. that the Oval Office was largely above the law? So, in order to let the country “move on” – Rove’s favorite term to cover up past crimes – Ford actually laid the foundation for the country to repeat the exact crimes he was pardoning.
Anyway, that’s my morning thought. I’m sure it’s been discussed here before. And nobody’s awake to read it anyway.

JPL you’re almost there!
You need to have only one http:// at the beginning. I take care of this by deleting the one that’s in the link box.
And replace these [ ]

The [ turns into the lesser than sign.
< </code>The ] turns into the greater than sign.
