Yes, we’re all familiar with the Know-Nothing Twins, Gonzalez and McNulty; and the Political Purity Pod People, Sampson and Goodling, and now it looks like tomorrow we’ll get to meet Brad Schlozman’s partner in the Super Suppressors Action Team, Hans von Spakovsky. And he sounds every bit as charming and fair-minded as his helium-breathing former boss:
…[V]on Spakovsky was “the point person for undermining the Civil Rights Division’s mandate to protect voting rights.” Von Spakovsky reported to Schlozman, and the two worked together to purge voters from the rolls, ensure that voter ID laws were approved with no fuss, and punish lawyers who did not toe the line.
But while Schlozman was the enforcer, von Spakovsky seems to have been the brains of the operation. Von Spakovsky, unlike Schlozman, had a background in election law and had been pushing the voter fraud canard for years — to great effect.
Baron von Spakovsky would pretty much have to be the brains of that operation, considering Schlozman can barely remember his own name…
…[V]on Spakovsky attempted to force widespread purging of voter rolls based on a very restrictive reading of election law (which von Spakovsky knew inside and out, since he helped draft the Help America Vote Act). “For example,” the lawyers write, “in one letter, he advocated for a policy keeping eligible citizens off the voter rolls for typos and other mistakes by election officials.” And as McClatchy detailed last month, he extended his activities to making sure the Election Assistance Commission, a tiny agency that serves as the government’s election information clearinghouse, published research that conformed to the voter-fraud orthodoxy.
I guess he would have been helping out with the voter ID requirements part of HAVA, which the Republicans wouldn’t pass it without.
Oh gee, I almost forgot why his name has come up: Clever Hans is currently an FEC commissioner, installed via (what else?) recess appointment 18 months ago, and he has a confirmation hearing before the Senate Rules and Administration Committee tomorrow in hopes of becoming a “real” commissioner. Good luck with that, Hans. If you couldn’t get confirmed by the Rubber Stamp Congress, you’re sure as hell not getting confirmed by the Intermittent Backbone Congress. Fortunately, he was only a commissioner for 18 short months, otherwise he could have done some real damage.
Meanwhile, the other half of the Super Suppressors Action Team has backtracked on his rather remarkable claim that Craig Donsanto, author of the DoJ election policy manual (the one that tells you not to pursue voter fraud investigations right before an election) gave him the go-ahead to pursue a voter fraud investigation right before the 2006 election. Strange, because he had seemed so very sure about it when he testified, but hey, memory’s a funny thing, I’m sure it was an honest mistake and totally not perjury at all. Maybe hypnosis would help?

dakine01, no fair you distracted me with the Bosox score!!! :P
“Clever Hans” — hee hee, Eli, I caught that. :-)
Is von Spakovsky a dark horse? A stalking horse? On previous form, he’s a horse of a sinister color indeed.
I wanna know when all these hearings will result in some real life indictments for perjury, obstruction of justice, and Hatch Act violations. Can Congress insist on an independent special prosecutor, because no one in the current DOJ can be trusted to be independent?
Bob in HI
Swordswoman @ 5
Heh, I was hoping someone would pick up on that one. But he’s more of a horse’s ass, really…
CTuttle @ 4
Ya gotta move quick with this crowd. When the comment was slow to post, I rushed right up here…
Is Hans von’s testimony gonna be on CSPan tomorrow? I just checked the TV schedules on their site and they don’t show anything on CSpan 3. I’m sure I’ve seen that Lurita is in front of Wax da MAN and televised but Hans von might be fun as well.
Hi Eli!
This looks like a mighty healthy crowd to hang out with! Hi.
Gee Eli, I don’t usually think of the word fuckery before dark, but, this post is filled with fuckery.
I hope you showered after you wrote it..)
Joe Scarborough is talking about O’Reilly right now. O’Reilly said that CNN and MSNBC “delight” in reporting the bad news in Iraq.
Can you libel a network??
Bob Schacht @ 6
Yeah, I’ve wondering that myself – it seems like some of these people, Gonzo in particular, have been caught lying a whole bunch of times, and it doesn’t seem to be leading to any kind of consequences.
If you can lie under oath with impunity, then what good are subpoenas?
Oh My! DiFi chairs and Byrd, Durbin, Dodd, and Schumer (amongst other dems) are all on the committee as well…
dakine01 @ 14
Will this be on cspan?
Hi, Elliott!
Sandman @ 12
He also said that the explosions that kill US troops are meaningless, or maybe it was “useless”. Yet another BillO statement that should have provoked cries of outrage and didn’t.
Eli @ 13
Intermittent Backbone Congress.

dakine01 @ 14
I don’t much care for Schumer as a politician, but I sure do like him as a prosecutor.
What’s an FEC commissioner? Federal Elections ________?
Are we going to have paper ballots for ‘08?
Intermittent Backbone Congress
HA!
Just when you think you’ve run out of pathetic, constitutionally-challenged losers to fill the department of “Justice”, they come up with yet another…
This is the first paragraph of a front page story in the Savannah Daily Disappointment today:
Sweet, no? If you want to read the rest of it you’ll find it at http://www.savannahnow.com.
Some of us are taking this VERY seriously down here. I make it a point to bring some non-government-issued ID when I vote, and I’ve had a few go-arounds with poll watchers who’ve tried to tell me I have to show them a driver’s license. After we get rid of von Spakovsky the next thing we need to do is DEMAND verifiable voting. Diebold has got to go.
Eureka Springs @ 15
I don’t know. Like I said earlier, I went and looked but the CSPan TV schedules page isn’t showing any of the hearings for tomorrow. I’m pretty sure someone posted earlier today that Lurita’s hearing was on the schedule but don’t know where they saw it…
Eli @ 13
Really!
It’s not like it was inadvertent.
Loo Hoo. @ 20
Federal Elections Commission commissioner?
I’m guessing partially (or at least paper trails), but not nearly as universally as we should. As far as I can tell, the Democrats have shown no sense of urgency on this, and they’ve had since at least 2004 to get something done.
FEC = Federal Election Commission
Recently it’s been an agency of the Republican Party which overlooks or even assists in Dem voter suppression via voter ID, roll purging (to excess) and various other things.
The committee makes the video available on their website but I’m not sure if Cspan will carry it.
Eli @ 19
I was checking him out yesterday and wiki reminded me. He was elected to NY state house the same year he graduated Harvard Law. He has been a politician his entire adult life and has never lost an election. He’s a camera hog and prima donna but for all that, he usually has a damn good reason to be in front of the camera and justifies it.
dakine01 @ 24
selise will probably have it up tomorrow. I sure appreciate her work.
dakine01 @ 29
Well, it’s not really his ability to win elections that I have a problem with…
I’m sorry, but everytime I see the name Spakovsky, I read Spankovsky.
Swordswoman @ 5
Good catch!
Clever Hans was a horse who looked as though he could think for himself (i.e., by “counting”), but was actually responding to subtle cues by his trainer. Sounds like the perfect description of Kyle Sampson, Monica, etc. etc. The DOJ has a stable full of them. In fact, by Sen. Whitehouse’s count, about 417 of them.
Bob in HI
dakine01 @ 8
I did the same thing, and dakine beat me by THISMUCH!

Marion,
I love the name of your city, Savannah. I think it is the prettiest name of a city I have ever heard. Hope to visit Savannah someday.

Eli @ 31
In many ways he is the stereotypical Brooklyn/Queens guy with a heavy dose of obnoxious. Kinda like a lot of Yankees fans as I recall. But as a legislator he is top shelf.
dmac @ 35
I didn’t link to it, but I’m pretty sure the TPM Muck post I linked to did.
Elliott @ 32
You’ve said that before. Are you feeling naughty? Or is it too early to ask that kind of question?
dakine01 @ 38
No, Obnoxious Brooklyn Queens Guy is a plus. I’m thinking more about the DSCC’s lukewarm support for Lamont, plus an overall impression that he’s a member of the “money party” rather than the “people party”.
dmac @ 35
dmac, thanks for posting this link, which speaks directly to our problem down here in Georgia. It won’t do a lick of good, but I’m going to send it to my congresscritter, DINO John Barrow and my 2 wretched excuses for Senators. Thanks again.
Loo Hoo. @ 36
Loo Hoo, please do come. Not only is it a pretty name, it’s just about the most beautiful city you’ll ever hope to see. Just make sure you don’t come in the summer, which is brutal.
NPR had a piece earlier up on Spakovsky. They related some of the controversies surrounding him and then ended with the thought that Democrats might want to approve him because with the commission balanced between Dems and Republicans another Republican would have to be nominated in his place. This seemed wildly stupid even for NPR. Nothing and nowhere does it say that Democrats must approve a Republican no matter how wingnutty.
BTW this is what I had to say about him from my scandals list:
BBTW Spakovsky started out in the Fulton County (Atlanta) elections office.

Von Spakovsky? Von Spakovsky!
He owes me money!

A few years ago, I tracked down a high school classmate on Tybee Island and went over and visited during St Paddy’s week. I had never realized how much of a big deal St Paddy’s Day is in Savannah.
Schlozman lied before the Senate judiciary committee about Donsanto’s alleged sign off of the voter fraud indictments in Missouri.
Charges need to be brought.
Did anyone else think Schlozman sounded like a munchkin?
What is it with these wimpy guys trying to spew GOP testosterone? I guess it must be the brand.
dmac @ 35

Wow, that’s quite an undorsement
Eli @ 41
Has any reporter checked back with the DSCC to see if they regret not having supported Lamont with everything they had? They need to eat some crow before they get another dime from me.
Eli @ 13
Marion in Savannah @ 23
Agreed. And no more electronic voting with “black box” software. The software doesn’t necessarily need to be public, as long as it is certified by an independent review board responsible to the public.

After his testimony, people here were calling him Alvin, after the Chipmunk.
Ever heard Ramesh Ponnuru?
Kevster @ 50
I think most of us who watched and live blogged felt chipmunk voice was the term. I said that first then someone else (jgabriel?) said Alvin so he has been AL-VINNN ever since…
Kevster @ 50
I think we started out with munchkins during the hearings but quickly settled on Alvin the Chipmunk.

Looks like most folks are over reading them some e-mails. I read about a third of the way down and may I say that these people are total idiots!
These are e-mails and actions taken from THIS YEAR and they’re carrying on like it’s all business as usual and there was no change of control on the Congress!
And wasn’t sweet lil Monica trying to downplay her friendship with Rachel Paulose? And so nice that Harriet was worried that the Congress might get upset and take the AG’s appointment rights away from him.

No, that’s where I got it. I was one haole GI stationed there for four years and loved the idea of the all purpose descriptor dakine. Loved it so much, I adopted it as my screen name although it has lots of uses. Right Bob and CTuttle?
PrevTopic: To anyone who wondered whether Mudhen Saunders was working on the campaign, he had this comment at his SwampBlog just a few moments ago (emph.added):
Spakovsky was also involved in the Heffelfinger US Attorney case in Minnesota. Scholzman nixed the initial recommendation for an investigation into the Secretary of State Kiffmeyer’s attempt to prevent Native Americans from using tribal IDs to vote. Some of the lawyers at Civil Rights tried to gather more information to back their case for an investigation. Spakovsky said they could do so only through Kiffmeyer who was the original source of the problem. This was the reverse of the Missouri case where Schlozman decided to prosecute “voter fraud” cases on his own.
The odd thing about Bill O’s attack on CNN is that the coverage of Iraq has fallen from a few minutes a day to almost nothing at all. I never see live interviews with their correspondents, even with just a wall of the green zone behind them. Really since the week before the final vote on the Iraqi supplemental, coverage has just about disappeared, imo.
Yet BO screams the oppposite. (how can anyone watch him?)
TexB @ 87
Do any of you get BBC radio news (”World Update”)? WAY better than anything in our MSM, IMHO. Here it comes on (unfortunately) at 5:00am, but I know in the NJ area it’s on for about 4 hrs every morning. Much more complete, incisive, informed, and cut-through-the-crap than anything I know of in the US. Seems better than the TV version too.
Why is suppressing the vote any different than using cough syrup? Sheesh. Picky picky picky!
TeddySanFran @ 90
I thought his nickname was Stinkweed.
TeddySanFran @ 90
that does answer the question!
dakine01 @ 89
All I remember is that you would call something “da kine” if you couldn’t remember its name. What are some other uses?
TexB @ 87
So do I. I used to watch CNN every day after 9/11. I felt like it was good coverage at that time. But the further Bushco got into corrupting every single institution in our country, they just fell further and further behind in covering the important issues. They copied FOX. I hope one of the networks can get back to reputable news coverage. If not, too bad for them.
PeterK @ 93
They don’t have a podcast? Either through itunes or on their own site?
TexB @ 99
Don’t know. Could well be, I never checked.
I’m hoping the “work on the campaign” Mudhen has to do tonight involves a STFU from John and Elizabeth. Or maybe a pink slip.
Actually, my other half, who is British, tells me that they don’t even have journalism schools over there. Maybe we need to get rid of them here!
Another thing about Brit journalists is that they are MUCH more aggressive about questioning people, but in a good way, they really go after the facts and are much less likely to accept hype. Course, I guess I’m predjudiced!
Bob Schacht @ 6
This speaks for me. I am so sick of the lies and perjury and obstruction without accountability that I have no words to describe it. If the Congress isn’t going to do anything about any of this, they should just call a recess, go home, and stop wasting our time.

For that exact reason.
TexB @ 129
These things feed on themselves. For ex, 53 votes vs. Abu in the Senate, and only one Senator defending him. The various investigations. The house of cards is getting ready to come down. Can’t tell just when, but I sense it. Compare the attitudes now with a year or two ago, for ex.

klevenstein @ 135
This is precisely why the Amicus(sp?) brief people filed the brief in the Libby case. If PatFitz was appointed illegally, then the DOJ is above the law. Frightening.
dakine01 — pssst…
da kine = that kind, or the kind, depending on usage.
Generally used in reference to something preferred, as in “the (best) kind”.
Not the same as no ka oi (the best), but can convey similar connotation depending on usage; da kine refers to the subject itself, where no ka oi describes the subject.
edit: forgot to point out that da kine is pidgin, where no ka oi is Hawaiian.
dakine01 @ 89
It kinda means “down home folks” or more literally, “the people”. Its more pidgin than Hawaiian. I think there’s a local TV show called Da Kine.
But that’s not my final answer *g*
Bob in HI
PeterK @ 93
You can also get it on the web. There are actually several “channels”. One of our local public radio stations carries it in the evenings.

Hi Suzanne.

Somebody’s versed in Hawaiian! It’s multipurpose, as is all Hawaiian words, only 13 letters in the Language!!! ;-)
hey Suzanne :-)
Thanks, Helen. I saw it and detoured completely around the entire diving area – that bellyflop yesterday is still haunting me.
Bob Schacht @ 140
Referring to the local people as da kine is the island pidgin equivalent of La Raza or “homey”.
Down home folks might also be described as ka’ama aina, meaning native, or born in Hawaii, or long-time resident. One might be eligible for a ka’ama aina discount if they can show residency, but the connotation is not the same among Hawaiians who would use the term to label native-born who are at least hapa.
Hey Suzanne. Good to see you.

I wouldn’t think it as a cannonball, you go into the water touching your toes and quick open up, as compared to a regular jackknife where you touch your toes and straighten up before you, in particular, slide into the water with nary a ripple.

BWA HA HA. My alma mater wrote me a letter once that said that they needed $20,000,000 to build a blah blah blah. I wrote then a check for $20,000,000. And then I said “leave me alone” Haven’t heard from them since.

Is that how much our Ambassador to Belgium paid out? I’ve been to Belgium, it barely beats out Liechtenstien, Andorra, and, Luxembourg, in relevance!!! 707

kanaka maoli is a broader reference to the race that includes native Hawaiians (little n). It can also imply male gender since kanaka by itself means “man”.
ka’ama aina refers to persons born in Hawaii and of Hawaiian heritage, but not necessarily of full-blood (Native Hawaiians – capital N). Appropriated by non-native culture to connote residency status. (And it may be kama versus ka’ama, but the folks in my family say it with the pause.)
Agh. I should have also said that ka’ama aina means person or child of the land (aina); using this phrase to indicate residency status is not supported by the Hawaiian community.
And use of the word kanaka should also be careful and judicious as it was misused by whites referring to male field hands much as “boy” was misused in reference to African-American males.

Whew, I’m well aware of what you’re saying, and, I’m well versed in Hawaiian, everything you’ve stated is accurate, need we prolong this? *g*

So of the dynamic duo, who is Robin? I say the one closest to the floor slithering around must be…Gonzo.
Another dynamic duo can be found in the ongoing “Hookergate”: Joe Clark and Maria Cuvillon, the postal investigators who obtained a warrant to enter Palfrey’s Vallejo home back on October 3rd of 2006 fit a similar mould. According to Deborah Jeane Palfrey and her retired mother (visited by IRS agent Tony Burrows and Cuvillon earlier this month), Clark and Cuvillon are in their late-twenties in appearance and demeanour. Do they have any evangelical-background like Monica Goodling? It’s a worthy question. These could all be appointments by the Bush administration, but it’s unclear at this time. And why was Cuvillon in Florida and Vallejo, California at such disparate-times with an IRS agent? Is it simply to firm-up the federalization of the case? And does anyone want Joe Clark’s home number? ;0)
