…no, I’m not running for President, but thanks for asking.
But I am going to Take Back America 2007 in Washington DC next week and speaking on a panel with Bowers, Stoller, Jim Dean, Oliver Willis and Isaiah Poole. It should be an interesting experience, especially the gala dinner on the 19th where progressive bloggers will receive the Paul Wellstone Citizen Leadership Award. I don’t want to let the cat out the bag or anything but those in attendance are in for quite a delightful surprise as one of the great mysteries of the blogosphere is…um, maybe I should just shut up now.
Feed the poodles. That’s it. Feed the poodles.

jane!
run jane run :D
Jane,
It would be nice if you did run for office. But I assume you’re like many of us who survived life in the 60s/70s/80s. As my sister has put it, “I don’t have any skeletons in my closet; I have a damned graveyard…”
Big kudos. You make us all proud Jane.
Too early to go OT? Sheldon Whitehouse is on fire. Vote soon. (vote often)
Good on ‘ya Jane. Now we’re all in suspense
Why is The Politico taking the straw poll? They are a right-wing outfit.
Feed me?
Shorter Whitehouse:
Madness. Madness. Madness!
Dare I entertain my wildest hope? Oh my, oh my!
Run!
urban pirate @ 4
Ain’t that the Truth!!!
GO Jane! Please run, can’t wait. I miss Wellstone.
Nice touch, Sheldon, why should you not be judged by the same standard that you judged these USAs.
Sheldon quoting “Colonize my womb” Coburn to nice effect.
Kobe would make a quite a statement at the state dinners.
I hope Amato posts Whitehouse’s screed at C&L. It is a work of art.
I bet I can guess! The Fabu Digby will at long last be revealed!!
I’m not in suspense, I know precisely what she’s talking about.
I suppose I could give it away, but I’m on thin ice around here as it is.
Have a great time in our nation’s capital.
When is Whitehouse gonna form a Presidential Exploratory Committee? I want to be the first to donate. Send Whitehouse to the White House!
Harry Reid following Whitehouse?
Ill- advised, Harry !!!
I LOVE watching real life courage in motion.
Petrocelli @ 18
Already, Harry looks like a bumbling fool. I can’t believe he doesn’t even know if Schumer is the senior Senator from NY. :-(
Remind me never to get on Sheldon Whitehouse’s bad side. Sorry about not blogging this for you pups, I had to see their faces and only listen just this once.
Leahy is up!!!
Run, Jane!
Give ‘em Zell Harry!
Reid and now Leahy standing up for Schumer against McConnell’s, Lott’s, and Hutchison’s calumny’s…
Petrocelli @ 18
Thank you Senator Leahy … Harry was putting me to sleep.
Oh snap, Harry’s back !!!
Why are the Dems so surprised that the Repubs object to this vote? The Repubs have never been interested in oversight or good government — do the Dems expect them to start now?
Wow. How inspiring…zzzzz…..
No wonder we’re in such dire straights! What the hell is he talking about?!?! God save the Vegas Strip!
Run, Jane, Run! :)
My first thought was Digby being revealed, and then I thought maybe it was an ancient blogosphere mystery and we’ll find out who the MWO aka The Horse was. I’m also sort of expecting Billmon to reappear at some point, but not at this thing.
[sigh] Harry’s not very effective today. Nice touch, discussing DOJ’s past efforts to protect civil rights, but he needs to make it all about Gonzales.
Joe Klein’s conscience @ 20
He makes Daschle seem like a firecracker, by comparison.
Harry, please
firerecuse yourself and let Durbin or Feingold take your chair … for the sake of your party.Harry should STFU. Diluting Whitehorse (and Schumer).
Itch McCornhole is right up there with Joe Lieberman in the pantheon of political snakes.
-GSD
Yup, Harry, sit down, you’re ruining Whitehouse’s effect. And frankly, McCaskill was pretty damn good too.
Schumer too. But Harry? nut uh.
spurious @ 33
It’s so extreme, it’s really making me wonder. Now where did I leave that tinfoil hat?
bonkers @ 28
I always wonder how he got to be Majority Leader. How does he raise money? What chits has he been able to cash in? Do people give him money just so they don’t have to listen to him?
Rayne @ 31
We do not need a review, we’re present and all Harry is doing is dousing the flames that Schumer & Whitehouse set in the Senate today.
Jeez. Harry Reid is killing me here. He’s appealing to the pugs sense of decency by illustrating DOJ involvement in civil rights. LIke they havent been fighting to reverse that for 40 years.
emptywheel @ 35
Remember the blindfold.
emptywheel @ 35
Sorry, forgot to compliment Senator McCaskill on her pinch hit home run.
urban pirate @ 39
That’s it, Harry … bend over a little more !!!
spurious @ 33
Pretty Please!!! Give your time to someone else, anyone else, a Rethug if necessary!!!
Harry Reid and Tom Daschle are symptoms of the problem of Senate leaders on the Democratic side. You need someone who’s measured and can navigate all of the egos and byzantine rules of the place, but as leadership material for stirring the troops you get nothing. It’s like having Radar O’Reilly running things without having Colonel Potter there to provide forceful leadership.
for once Specter calls it like it is: “outright political chicanery which is involved in this resolution offered by the Democrats”.
The whole thing is as meaningless as the supplemental vote, the blank check that isn’t a blank check even though it is. Theatre to make the Democrats look like they’re doing something, when they aren’t.
Yawn. Wake me when it ends.
Dammit, Harry, would you remind them that you guys are right now, on the floor of the Senate, defending REPUBLICAN political appointees that were wrongfully dismissed??
ARGHHHHHHH
Stop! Harry Stop!!
Bring back Schumer.
brendancalling @ 45
So who is responsible? Reid?
CTuttle @ 43
The hell with Leffe, I’m getting out the Tequila !!!
Sorry, Harry needs to go!!
He can’t even express outrage without reading it from a sheet of friggin paper??!!!
Can’t he speak extemporaneously???
I want someone with fire in his or her belly representing my anger, not some oatmeal-mouthed dishrag.
Reid: embarrassing. Yes we know you’re sore about Bogden. But you’re stepping all over Whitehouse and McCaskill and Schumer.
Whitehouse had everybody ready to grab the torches and pitchforks. Now everybody is just ready for a nap.
Jeezus…it’s not that hard! Did he watch Whitehouse?!? Less is more Harry…less is more.
Harry’s throwing out his own shiny objects. He’s just doing his job I’m starting to think. He was supposed to dampen Whitehouse, McCaskill, Schumer.
Hamsher/Fitzgerald in ‘08…sounds good to me.
Cloture vote now. Mandatory yays and nays.
Tiresome. A suggestion to the Dems:
1. Yield the balance of your time to anyone in the chamber with an iota of confidence in the Attorney General.
2. Vote for cloture.
3. Repeat. If the Republicans threaten to filibuster, MAKE THEM FILIBUSTER. Make them stand up there and repeat, over and over and over, that not one person is willing to say that they have any confidence in the Attorney General. They can go all month with this, as far as I’m concerned.
Aw c’mon, Jane Hamsher, you can tell us; we shan’t split.
If that is a recent picture you are bearing up amazingly well, so please keep it up.
Thank you for your dig at Stench-laden Joe.
Oh, and was the letter to H Reid sent to him, because I do hope so?
Petrocelli @ 49
Needs to be Mezcal, you need the worm to truly honor Reid…!!! *g*
Here’s the cloture vote!
Anyone following the cloture vote? I need to go to the grocery store.
Note to Harry’s helpers:-
Be more like Tony Soprano or Schumer or Whitehouse and less like molasses !!!
egregious @ 21
I can’t see this anywhere right now! I hope it shows up on youtube.
But I want to nominate Sheldon for AG in the next democratic Admin!
puppethead @ 44
Hear Hear !!!
So far party line vote–no word from Collins or Craig, who would be two fo the first GOPers to flip, if anyone was goign to.
Crap, I have to fix dinner and attend a political meeting…hope I don’t miss anything more exciting than this cloture vote.
egregious @ 51
… or poke their eyes out !!!
Silence for Hagel, too. We’re not going to know what the vote looks like till this is done.
emptywheel @ 63
So much for the rule of law. Or the sense of shame.
Since Digby’s gender will finally be revealed at the TBA conference (Perlstein hyperventilated over the news last week), I’ll say Digby is a woman.
I do remember discussions and posts on blogspot in which she was quoted. Then I guess there was an anonymity kerfuffle in the blogoverse and Digby withdrew behind the Pat curtain.
I wants to know who Driftglass is… I have a clue, but I also don’t want to out him. He wants his privacy, clearly, and who the fuck am I to say tant pis?
What happens if they dont show up to vote?(the repugs)
you look good with all them candidates, Jane!
If I heard it right, Roberts said no–the first person who had called on AGAG to resign who voted against vocally (aside from colonize my womb Coburn, who has already said he’ll vote against).
Jane, Run.. I say Digby’s a girl only because her insights are so strong.
Sununu only REpublican voting Yes, as far as I could tell.
Wow, Sununu voted for cloture!
emptywheel @ 71
gah, did he really say that? Same “brainwaves and heartbeats” Coburn or was that another one?
Lindsey Graham, no. So much for that lawyer’s rule of law.
Mommybrain @ 68
I would guess Digby is a female too. That’s because my own personal biases say that with as much insightfulness as Digby possesses in so many areas, that could only come from a woman. But I could be wrong.
So what’s the count? How come they don’t post a running tally like they do for the House Votes??? Arrgh!!!
tw3k @ 75
No, I did. Caught him looking at me in that way and ran away before he could get his OB/GYN forceps out.
Gosh, day’s like this I hate living in GA. Isacson is such a disappointment.
Mommybrain @ 68
somewhere I got the distinct impression Digby was female but I’m embarrassed that I can’t remember where or why.
I’m waiting to find out how Voinovich and Brown of Ohio voted.
while we’re waiting for the vote….
completely OT –
i’ve updated my pick of congressional hearings for the week to add the house science and technology oversight hearing tomorrow on the duPont Aerospace DP-2 Aircraft.
from laura rozen:
p.s. at RevDeb’s suggestion, i’m keeping the link to the list of this week’s hearings as my “website”, so clicking my name gets you to the list. hope this is helpful to firepups.
emptywheel @ 76
No surprise, right? Wasn’t he the author of the detainees act?
Susan Collins – Yes
Collins: Aye
emptywheel @ 76
I’d like to pop him with a dodge ball
emptywheel @ 76
As if he ever cared about the rule of law.
He’s a snake. Always has been always will be.
Collins – aye
Collins voted for Closure! must be feelin’ the heat…
emptywheel @ 79
707, I’d run too!
emptywheel @ 63
We were counting on that Bush stooge Craig to do the right thing? We were f**ked.
Trust me. He’s my worthless Senator, and he ALWAYS gets it wrong. Got his number on speed dial, though, so it’s time to abuse his interns again.
Collins Aye, Our second GOP.
Joe Klein’s conscience @ 37
Majority leaders are not chosen on their ability to speak in public.
Bob in HI
Collins was a yes
Collins voted in the affirmative!! Wow!!
Woodhall Hollow @ 61
Sheldon was wearing his dark suit … had ominous words for the Reps.
As we get closer to frog marching BushCo, Senator Whitehouse should be put more in the front and Harry Reid should vote in absentia, if that’s possible.
Voinovich (sic) = no
Collins aye
Voinovich choked and voted No on cloture
Mutant Poodle @ 90
Guess it was my call and email!!!! :-)
Voinovich, No.
So much for his claims to moderation and rule of law.
cathy @ 77
Particularly the way in which she writes about abortion. She breathes fire on this issue, as well she should.
Margot @ 82
Voinovich voted no.
Bob in HI
leinie @ 92
Sorry, I fucked up, I was thinking of Smith, not Craig. I got lost in the beautiful Northwest.
Bob Schacht @ 94
I know that, but I want to know what exactly they are chosen on. And in this day and age of TV, if he is gonna be the face of the party he needs to be more TV savy, for better or worse.
emptywheel @ 93
Surely Lieberman will vote the other way to cancel her out. Maybe they “traded” votes.
Kyl: No
What a disgrace.
The rule of law only applies in civil cases where there is no pressing need to protect the very essence of the system of justice in the United States.
Blow me, every Republican hypocrite in that chamber and twice from the Republicans who are attorneys and voted no.
Bob in HI @ 94
That wouldn’t be a problem if he were able to actually lead. (Haven’t seen much evidence of that yet, either.)
Smith Aye.
EW @ 105 – Smith I could see doing good. ANd he did!
Craig registered his no, as expected. His interns hate it when I call.
Haven’t heard Crapo yet, but he’ll do as he’s told by Craig.
RevDeb @ 88
Ding! Had been trying to think of what he reminded me of.
Grassley -no
Bond – no
Webb – yes
P J Evans @ 110
P.J.,
Thanks. That was the other point.
Hagel Aye
Grassley No
Bond No

Hagel Yes
Hagel aye
Graham’s a “loyalist” – he’s for the rule of Bushlaw.
Has Spector actually voted yet?
Smith aye! hip, hip, horray!
Hagel – Aye
Still waiting on Snowe, Specter, Coleman, Hagel, Murkowski,
Smith, Aye–our third Republican.
Grassley and Bond no, even though they called for AGAG’s resignation.
Joe Klein’s conscience @ 107
I know that, but I want to know what exactly they are chosen on. And in this day and age of TV, if he is gonna be the face of the party he needs to be more TV savy, for better or worse.
This reminds me of the old line from Benny Hill about the “Best Man” at the nudist’s wedding.
Hagel=Aye with a thumbs up!!
Sessions No
Hagel is aye
Hagel – aye!
Hagel Aye.
We’ll be about 5 votes short, I think, with Johnson absent.
Sessions – no
hypocrit to the end

Noonan @ 123
Which is?
Snowe aye
Snow – aye!
emptywheel @ 123
Didn’t Murkowski already vote Aye?
Snowe aye too. Double whammy for Maine!!!
You Nevadans should go after Ensign hard–he was REALLY pissed about Bogden’s firing, but won’t fire AGAG in return. (He voted no).
Corker, no, My own little sleazeball
emptywheel @ 128
The point of this is to hang the lawlessness of the Bush government around the necks of the GOP senators (as I’m sure everyone knows). So passing isn’t as important as taking the vote.
Nelson from nebraska dem or rethug?
He is aye.
Martinez No
Pryor Yes
Sessions is a loyalist.
lincoln aye
Arlen Aye
Woodhall Hollow @ 147
Both Nelon’s are blue dog dems

1,544 DAYZ AND THE KILLIN’ GOEZ ON AND ON AND..
Citizen Hamsher and the Firedog Patriots:
Yes fellow spear-carriers, it is crystal clear, the battle lines are drawn and they cut thru some Democrats in ‘08. Harry Reid must be retired from leadership and Mrs. Clinton and her A*P*C cadre in both the House and Senate must be quaranteened, isolated and taken out of all leadership or positions of influence.
This whole excercise is pathetic… get Al Gore out front and sweep at least 6 more Senators into the room. To hell with cloture and 60 votes impeach every single one of the bastards and let the chips fall all over ‘em!!!
KEEP THE FAITH AND PASS THE FUCKIN’ AMMUNITION, DON’T BE AFRAID ANYMORE!!
Where’s my heart medicine???
Arlen-Aye!
Gawd– what a noisy vote! One gets the impression that there is some last minute decisions being made!
Spector-Aye Yeah!!!
Coleman Aye
Coleman Aye
Spector Aye
radiofreewill @ 149
that’s not the word I would use to describe him ;)
Coleman – aye!!
Thank you for contacting my office to share your concerns about Attorney General Gonzales. Your input is important to me, and I appreciate the time you took to share your thoughts.
I feel that the decision to fire several U. S. Attorneys was mishandled by Attorney General Gonzales. In an effort to procure the whole story regarding the attorney’s removal, Congress heard testimony from the Attorney General on April 18, 2007. The members of the Senate Committee on the Judiciary are considering the hearing’s testimony, and will likely make oversight recommendations in the near future. I look forward to hearing their recommendations, and hope to get to the bottom of this situation as quickly as possible.
In order to clarify the process by which interim U.S. Attorneys are appointed, S.214, Preserving United States Attorney Independence Act of 2007 was introduced and passed in the Senate. I voted for this measure with the hope that a new clarification process would hinder this controversial situation from occurring again.
Letter from Corker on the subject.
Woodhall Hollow @ 148
Isn’t it sad that we have to ask that question?
RevDeb @ 151
Hahahahahahaha!
Hey, Old Scottish Law voted Aye. That’s how you know we lose–if it had been a meaningful vote, he would have voted present. Or Haggis.
Warner No
Inhofe No
Warner, the bastion of legal propriety, NO
The mannequin from MN votes with us? Unreal.
Coleman, it’s about time you did the right thing.
murkowski no
Merkowski – no
Murkowski No
PeterK @ 143
Oh, those lawnorder Mainers!
Coleman knew when he voted that his vote was moot on cloture, but will play well back in MN.
Fuck Mr Warner.
And Ms Murkowski too.
Anyone know the count? Are we close to 60? Is a putz like Specter voting Aye because he knows we can’t reach 60?
Murkowski is a no.
That means we’ll end up with Specter, Snow, Coleman, Collins, Sununu, and Smith. We’ll be short one of ours because of Johnson. And who knows what Lieberman will do.
snowbird42 @ 166
Snowbird, how did you get my letter from Craig?
leinie @ 172
They did a whip count and gave him a pass on this ’cause he’s up for re-election. They know they have the votes to stop it.
emptywheel @ 169
Ah yes, he knows “the math.” The human calculator.
LindaR @ 176
Bull! It was my calls and emails today, clearly.
Joe Klein’s conscience @ 179
Of course, you dont get to be the chief coverup artist for 40 yrs running by being a dummy.

Puke Lieberman
Lieberman sooo wants to hang out with the Republicans!
He’s rationalizing the whole thing with Schumer now along with DIFI.
And he goes with the criminal administration
Joementum NO
Kick the sonofabitch OUT of the caucus!!!!!
Woodhall Hollow @ 178
All the more reason why Mark Warner has to get in the race. Force John Warner to run or retire. Don’t baby the bastard, he doesn’t deserve it.
Coleman had to vote aye, regardless of how much he likes being a party lapdog. Minnesotans understand what’s going on, and having our USA Heffelfinger forced out over his protection of Indian voting rights is bad news in this state. It doesn’t help that Heffelfinger’s replacement is a Gonzales minion who’s hated by everyone on top of being incompetent.
There is no reason this vote shouldn’t be hung around the necks of the offending Senators, the way the Iraq vote has been.
leinie @ 181
urban pirate @ 185

Did McCain vote?
Until Reid cans Lieberman, he should consider himself punked.
Schumer and Feinstein were both working RGJoe really hard, then he voted NO. Schmuck. I hope they are happy.
53-38, WTF!!!
RevDeb @ 191
Yeah, that should about do it.
I hope Harry is happy now!! F–k Lieberman!!
RevDeb @ 191
at least just kick him
energy cloture vote now
yays and nays mandatory
Can the Dems turf LIEberman now?
BushCo will never take the Dems seriously while HoJo gets to caucus with them.
TeddySanFran @ 205
They get what they deserve for not supporting Ned.
So it was all a kabuki dance for nothing. Thanks a lot Harry!!
That’s fine with me – no cloture today is an open invitation for more Gonzo-damning evidence to hit the headlines tomorrow.
The Goopers are going to make the Dems show an ‘ace’ before cloture.
And, I’m sure there are dozens of ‘aces’ out there just waiting to fall, too…
They were both working him hard, too, walked all over the chamber with him, then walked him up to the well. Then he voted thumbs down.
I really hope they are happy with their little RGJoe.
Where can we get the roll call. I want to see who didn’t vote.
“One of the great mysteries of the blogosphere,” huh? Like where the fuck is Billmon?
Oh yeah, and fuck Joe Lieberman.
Sanctimonious Joe has no moral authority for anything. He wants lawlessness and murder to run rampant in the world. I’m starting to think he really has become verifiably insane, like a Napoleon.
egregious @ 198
Well, at least we got a MAJORITY in favor of no confidence (indirectly).
Bob in HI
Harry Reid on March 27, 2007: “In this chamber is Joe Lieberman and there isn’t a senator I have more respect for than Joe Lieberman.”
New Jane upstairs
Helen @ 187
And fuck Lieberman.
(sorry for the profanity.)
New Thread about the vote
The “noes” have confidence in Abu Gonezales. They have confidence in this lawbreaker. They have no respect for our Constitution or our laws.
Anyone who ever runs against any of the “noes” needs to say this over and over again. It is true and not hyperbole.
Those are our talking points.
Is it just me, or are about 9 votes missing? Who didn’t show? They had better be in the hospital!
the corruption of the Albertoe and his DoJ is
Blatant!
BLATANT!
How could anyone have voted nay?
Woodhall Hollow @ 222
I think it’s appropriate in this case.
1,544 DAYZ AND THE KILLIN’ GOEZ ON AND ON AND..
Citizen Hamsher and the Firepup Patriots:
Now ken we have some order please? The Democrats in the Senate have got to get their act together and Harry Reid has gotta start snappin’ the troops into formation…no more major legislation put forth from the Whitehouse, no more compromisin’ under threat of fillibuster, jest keep loadin’ the shit on the fascists plates and let ‘em carry it into November of ‘08.
No more requests for us good troops to call on Republifascists beggin’ ‘em ta vote the right way…JEEzus folks, we got all we ken do ta keep the DEMOCRATS swingin’ the bats. Fer Christ’s sake, this is politics and if our system is to survive, we gotta hang the actions and positions of the incumbants right around their crooked necks. But in order ta have sumpthin’ ta hang ‘em with we gotta have the cajones ta bring the issues to the floor. Let the bastards fillibuster…the only way we get 9 more Democratic senators is to hang George Bush and the rest of his merry band of fascists right around their necks. Norm Coleman knows this and his vote in favor of cloture is a sign that he gets it…but it’s too late for the weasely little Nazi.
KEEP THE FAITH AND DON’T BACK DOWN!!
Digby should remain an enigma. The power of the analysis at Hullabaloo is electric, and somehow, the revelation that such philosophy is rendered by mere flesh and blood would be like removing the mystery of magic that holds the audience agape by showing them the device. This is my opinion.
And Digby is way too smart to be a chick, so shaddup wid dat goofy talk.
(I deadpanned this very opinion, in person, to Lady Hamsher, and without hesitation she laughed long and hard. She gets my absurd humor and I hope the readers of this comment too.)
Considering the circumstances of our meeting, her laughter was like raindrops on a parched earth.
Barbara Boxer is being honored? The one who supported Lieberman?
And you’re GOING?
[sigh]
emptywheel @ 122
How can they call for Gonzo’s resignation and say they won’t vote for “no confidence”?
Are they still “confident” yet think he should quit?
And if they don’t believe that a vote of no confidence will “have meaning” what about their statements that Gonzo resign…how much impact did THAT have? At least a COLLECTIVE statement carries some weight by demonstrating Congressional consensus!
And I wonder if they would actually take the step of doing something that actually has INFLUENCE and IS PERFECTLY WITHIN THE DUTIES OF CONGRESS? They could call for Gonzo’s impeachment and request that the House draw up articles of impeachment! And then vote to IMPEACH THE FOOL!
Wanna bet they won’t do that?
