You know, I’ve been cogitating a bit about the ridiculousness and intrusiveness of the pro-life crazies into medical practice. And I’m starting to wonder if the “problem” won’t be self-limiting.

The OB-gyn physicians and certified nurse midwives are facing steep malpractice premiums. On top of the already intrusiveness of third party reimbursement entities, these docs and advanced practice nurses are beginning to find it more stop-loss to close their practices and move to other specialties. Hospitals are also closing maternity services at a fast clip. Pretty soon, there won’t be enough basic providers to serve any woman for any reproductive health problem.

That’s when the organic material will interface with the oscillating rotator and the repellent pro-life legislation will get rolled back.

People will vote for their self-interests. When the congress critters can’t find anyone to deliver their own little bundles of joy or their children’s bundles, that’s when it will get some attention and the – shock – of learning that the providers resent non-professionals telling them how to practice and making treatment decisions for them

It has been noted that Fred Thompson’s most successful career is that of Lobbyist. A Thompson Presidency would be the first Lobbyist President. In fact as late as 2006, Thompson was being paid to lobby against asbestos victims.

Before he was elected to the Senate, Thompson spent nearly two decades in Washington as a lawyer-lobbyist, representing such entities as Westinghouse, the deposed leader of Haiti, the Teamsters Union pension fund and the Tennessee Savings and Loan Association, according to Senate records and published accounts.

After he left the Senate in 2003, Thompson resumed his acting career with a role as the district attorney on TV’s Law & Order. Less visibly, he registered in 2004 as a lobbyist for Equitas, a company created to manage the asbestos liability for Lloyd’s of London.

Equitas hired a bevy of lobbyists to protect its interests in the proposal to set up a federal trust fund, paid for by insurers, asbestos-makers and others, to compensate asbestos victims. The bill failed to pass, but before that happened, Equitas got what it wanted: a change in a provision the company said singled out foreign insurers for unfavorable treatment. Jon Nash, a firm spokesman, on Wednesday credited Thompson as having “contributed to the successful outcome.”

The company paid Thompson $760,000 from 2004 to 2006, according to Senate records.

Thompson is connected to neocons and Scooter Libby.

So despite Thompson’s “folksy” appeal, perhaps it’s not surprising that his campaign team is a who’s who of Washington insiders and corporate execs. Until recently his campaign manager-to-be, Tom Collamore, was a top tobacco industry exec at Altria (formerly Philip Morris). His division, according to the Center for Media and Democracy, has “been responsible for implementing countermeasures to combat public health efforts to control tobacco…and PM programs to enact tort reform, head off increased cigarette taxes and thwart legislated smoking restrictions.”

Another rumored top Thompson staffer is Tim Griffin, the RNC operative who Karl Rove recently installed as US Attorney for Eastern Arkansas as part of Attorneygate.

His spokesman is Mark Corallo, the former press flack for Karl Rove during the Scooter Libby trial.
