Via Matt Yglasias & Sullivan, we get a look at uber lobbyist Fred Thompson’s pro-choice past. It wouldn’t really be note worthy — the entire GOP 08 lineup is such a pallet of inveterate flip floppers they put Big Joe Turner to shame — but Thompson’s edge with the lizard brains seems to be based on the notion that he is a “true social values conservative” whereas Rudy’s just an authoritarian bastard whose kids really hate him.
As Yglesias notes, Thompson was running for office in Tennesee where a pro-choice stance (such as it is) couldn’t be expected to help him so he quite probably believes what he is saying.

Hi Jane!!!
That’ll be the day when Thompson stands for women’s rights.
Jane!!!
And speaking of Jane — in today’s Tom Paine daily email, there is an ad for Take Back America 2007. The ad has photos of Barak Obama, John Edwards, Bill Richardson, and . . . Jane Hamsher!!!
As pro-choice stances go, that one’s not very choicey, to be honest.
Quatro!
None of the slimeball GOP candidates know how to tell the truth, they just revise history to suit their latest reincarnation.
I hope the Democrats don’t underestimate Fred Thompson in terms of his ability to win. I remember Reagan and Arnie. My party sold them short. The rest is history.
-ck- @ 2
Any link for that ad?
Steve @ 3
Nah, but neither is Rudy’s and the false envidious comparison still gets made.
George Will’s take on Fred: tulipomania, 2007
I would say Thompson’s IQ may be closer to
the other actor Reagan at 106?
It’ll be interesting to watch ol’ Fred wiggle out of this one.
Hi Jane!
I was going to try to corner “tres” for Hillary, but missed the boat. Here’s what you get when you cross an inveterate flip-flopper with an incurable triangulator.
At least Hillary is solidly pro-choice…
gosh he’s always been a good-looking sumbitch, hasn’t he? *g*
You know, I’ve been cogitating a bit about the ridiculousness and intrusiveness of the pro-life crazies into medical practice. And I’m starting to wonder if the “problem” won’t be self-limiting.
The OB-gyn physicians and certified nurse midwives are facing steep malpractice premiums. On top of the already intrusiveness of third party reimbursement entities, these docs and advanced practice nurses are beginning to find it more stop-loss to close their practices and move to other specialties. Hospitals are also closing maternity services at a fast clip. Pretty soon, there won’t be enough basic providers to serve any woman for any reproductive health problem.
That’s when the organic material will interface with the oscillating rotator and the repellent pro-life legislation will get rolled back.
People will vote for their self-interests. When the congress critters can’t find anyone to deliver their own little bundles of joy or their children’s bundles, that’s when it will get some attention and the – shock – of learning that the providers resent non-professionals telling them how to practice and making treatment decisions for them
Just my .02
Jane!!
I called Reid’d office today on HoJo. I invoked your name too in regards to your weekend posting. It sounds like Reid’s office is getting swamped with calls on various matters. I wonder he if knows what he was getting into by being Senate Majority Leader.
Why did the clip stop while he was still giving his answer?
Joe Klein’s conscience @ 15
If it’s overwhelming to him and his staff, he can always return to serving only Nevada in the Senate. I’d be happy to see Dick Durbin promoted into the Leader slot…
If he chooses to run, Fred Thompson will be no pushover.
Not necessarily OT but admittedly my personal opinion and taste — an older man that cannot find fulfillment with a mature woman his own age always creeps me out. Personally, again, I’ve learned to much to buy into the myth of all things youthful. Just sayin……..
Teddy,
What about Russ Feingold? ;-)
How long has the old geezer been single in his lifetime? 18 years or so – 1984 divorce to 2002 remarriage, yes?
Perhaps enough time to have learned how valuable the right to choice could be?
Wonder if Larry Flynt will chase down any leads like he did with Bush pre-2000 election…
TeddySanFran @ 17
To be fair, Reid probably didn’t think either the war or the HoJo mess would come back to bite him. It makes me wonder how he got invited to YearlyKos last year. Does he realize the unrest out there? Sometimes I don’t think he does.
Rayne @ 21
I hope not. This whole line of attack is a very bad idea, IMO. Who cares what the candidates private lives are like, as long as they are not really over the edge. This kind of thinking is what gave us the Clinton impeachment–a completely disgusting spectacle, and in the end, with no real interest or significance for anyone except his family. Please don’t fall into this holier than thou trap…
OT, but funny. Apparently the Albanians love Bush so much, they stole his watch.
Hee, hee. According to my Albanian coworker. I don’t see it on our news.
To be fair to the YK organizers, we were on Harry’s home turf last year, and it was quite a coup to get him. Barbara Boxer was another speaker, but the Speaker-to-be had to stay back in DeeCee for a vote.
Oklahoma kiddo @ 18
Yea but once he is pushed over he will never be able to get up.
Fred will probably be their nominee & I don’t doubt most republicans will fall into line as they usually do. They don’t even bother to hold their noses because they have the ability to believe a skunk is really a rose down pat.
Fred’s trophy wife is young enough to care, personally, about the right to control her own body. Fred may have to face the reality of no longer gettin’ any if he tries to take his trophy wife’s personhood away from her.
LOL – Jane you’re the greatest! Just ONE of the reasons I love this site is where else are ya gonna get astute political analysis combined with Flip, Flop, and Fly? Of course, the Gooper 08 candidates can’t hold Big Joe Turner’s shoes, coat or hat
PeterK @ 23
The holier-than-thou trap was stepped in by Bush, who has claimed he is anti-abortion and pro-life, but has pointedly been otherwise throughout his life, from the debacle that is the Iraq War to the signed affidavit Flynt has about his girlfriend’s abortion for which he paid.
If Fred Thompson flip-flops on his position, he is open to scrutiny just as any other elected official is; if they want to be on our payroll and are going to inflict their policies on us, we are entitled to know whether they walk the walk or merely talk the talk. We do not need another moralistic hypocrite in the highest office of the land.
Slightly OT: I’m watching Pete Domenici on C-SPAN 2 right now, and I swear he is drunk.
Rayne @ 30
Unfortunately, Ol’ Fred will just invoke standard Gooper action, “I were a sinner but now I see the light praise Jeebus!” Absolves them of any and all positions previously held that conflict with Xtianist dogma.
Ed*ard Teller @ 12
Yeah, even when it comes to war.
SeamusD @ 4
FLIP-FLOP! Wait till things get really dirty as the campaign closes in and somebody like Brownback runs that clip in an ad for “the base.”
It’s gonna happen to Rudy and McCain, too.
I dunno, the evangelical base must be really huge or sumpin. What’s the percentage, I wonder?
OT Chalk up another small victory for Habeus Corpus today!!!

LindaR @ 31
That’s what he’s like normally. I dare not think how he would talk if he were under the influence.
LindaR @ 31
Mebbe he’s a little bit stressed? :)
Rayne @ 21
This is gonna sound silly, but I know someone who “dated” ol’ Fred during that time. Apparently, he’s much better at handling a subpoena rather than his pe…..well, you get the picture. I believe “Yawn” was the exact word she used. Other than that, no real dirt, but he did like the night life, so you may be right.
CTuttle @ 35
Yeah, that’s really gonna piss off President Cheney.
LindaR @ 31
Remember that ol’ Pete was the one caught roaming the halls of congress in his jammies. He’s not all there.
RevDeb @ 40
That’s unfortunate. (click)
RevDeb @ 40
oh, my. This explains a few things!!
bonkers @ 38
Ha, ha! So besides being old and ugly, he has no, erhm, skills.
RevDeb @ 36
He’s rambling about dishwashers and ironing boards . . .
Mary McCurnin @ 26
Needed a spew alert for that!
Thanks for this. I feel like it’s a daily (could be hourly) feature at any librul blog: this
week’sday’shour’s sign that a Republican is a flip-flopping panderer. And great call on Big Joe Turner.
Mandrake @ 44
WASHBOARDS – not ironing boards – and he’s proud to talk about ‘em on the Senate floor *g*
kdh22 @ 39
Yeah, one less arrow in his Unitary Executive quiver!!! ;-)
Mandrake @ 43
After eighteen years, it might be common knowledge in the Beltway (jeepers, at least more so than Plame was CIA), and therefore ’splains Joe Scarborough’s ill-advised “pole-working” comment…
FOlks,
TIme to tune into CSPAN2, I think. Domenici (appropriately enough) is trying to hold the floor on his energy debate stuff, but Schumer is ready to start on the no confidence resolution.
Thanks, EW — running to the TV right now…
N=1 @78: Oh, I see, “Back in the day . . .” sorta stuff. I’m gettin’ the picture. No wonder he was the one who called Iglesias. Slightly, not all there.
Hi-
OT. On Tucker a few minutes ago:
A clip of gwb talking about the proposed no confidence vote on Gonzales:
“It won’t determine who serves in my government”
He did not say our government. He said my government”
Schumer’s up now.
Debate on No Confidence up now!
Bob in HI
Rayne @ 30
Yes, if they flip-flop on a policy position they have taken, or do the opposite of what they say, that’s different. Doesn’t apply to BC in this case, tho.
OT somewhat:
As long as lies are accepted, what you are seeing is the result.
As long as lies are not resisted, what you are seeing is the result.
As long as lies are not exposed, what you are seeing is the result.
Lies are basic to all crime.
Lies are the basis of most politics.
Lies are the foundation of crimes against humanity.
Lies are fundamental to religeous beliefs.
Lies are what evil is.
(h/t OK K who is known and respected, one and two lines at a time)
Go Schumer!
Here we go. . . may we have our Dept. of Justice back? Please?
emptywheel @ 54
But he’s being so…so…mean to that nice hispanic man.
Rayne @ 30
As Bush has shown, with the lizard brains, if you say you found the Jeebus (or is it a pony), it’s like pushing a reset button on your past. So Fred can flip-flop and he is covered.
What’s all this “conflict of interest” crap the GOP keeps spewing about Schumer leading this investigation of Gonzales and being head of the DSCC? Somebody needs to call their bluff on that — “you guys aren’t working to elect Republican Senators?”
It’s a shiny object that needs smashing.
Any chance the evangelicals will figure out they have been had by all this bullshit?
Mutant Poodle @ 60
Is he being ’so mean’ as to be mistaken for a blogger?
Mandrake @ 43
If I had to guess, I’d bet he’s all thumbs :))
TeddySanFran @ 62
From the land of one-word answers…crap!
from a commenter on the yglasias’ article-
“Get real. Fred Thompson is a “Federalist.” He believes states should individually address their stance on abortion NOT have it mandated by the federal government. He has stated more than once that Roe vs. Wade was bad law and bad medicine. Nothing in the video states his personal position. Other videos make it very clear he is pro life. His authenticity is in NOT allowing his personal opinions to conflict with LAW.”
this is what i thought of his ’stance’ too…..what she said…..thompson believes in states’ rights over federal……..with all the pro-life groups takin’ rights away in states right and left, listen up people out there, he may as well say he’s pro-life, cuz the pro-lifers are taking care of it for him……state by state……they’re even closing the only clinics in areas that don’t offer any other care for women……planned parenthood……
i wish i had the links to things i’ve read about him, i have had a bad taste in my mouth about him for a while now……man, was i disappointed when i finally learned about his politics……thought he was a moderate, he isn’t.
Mutant Poodle @ 60
Schumer just brought up the Ashcroft hospital visit. Snap!!!
TeddySanFran @ 62
They’re just working the pole.
It has been noted that Fred Thompson’s most successful career is that of Lobbyist. A Thompson Presidency would be the first Lobbyist President. In fact as late as 2006, Thompson was being paid to lobby against asbestos victims.
Thompson is connected to neocons and Scooter Libby.

Marcy must be on Dan’s Must Read list.
cfeddy @ 24
Nobody told him to watch out for those sneaky Gypsies? Too. Funny!
emptywheel @ 54
Hi Marcy. Saw your rerun on CSpan the other day. Great stuff! You’re my hero!
Considering Schumer’s bill of particulars, “no confidence” is not enough. Attorney General Alberto Gonzales should be impeached — not to punish Gonzales, but to restore the integrity of the office itself.
McConnel up now for 15 minutes. Then Schumer again. Lott and Hatch for the red team. And Whitehouse batting clean-up for the blues.
emptywheel @ 54
McConnell is being a dick right now. What an ass!!
kdh22 @ 64
Why, that’s a horrible thing to say about anyone!
Joe Klein’s conscience @ 76
and you were suspecting something else from him?
RevDeb @ 75
Did you see what an ass Mitch was being?
RevDeb @ 78
You got me there ;-)
Mutant Poodle @ 77
Eeewww, I know, the dreaded ‘B’ word.
is it just me or is the refresh comments button swimming in a pool of molasses?
Looks like Mitch McConnell has his own little Sampson/Scholzman assistant sitting next to him. Back onto the “conflict of interest” boogaloo about Schumer….
TeddySanFran @ 83
Can you see the assitant’s hands?
Steve @61: That sums up the entire allure of the Baptist faith and it’s various offspring. The beauty of it, too, is you can be an asshole everyday of the week, and then get saved on Sunday and all your nastiness is washed away. You don’t even have to feel guilt or apologize to all the people you insulted and tramped on the week before. Waving your hands in the air and dry sobbing makes your salvation even more effective.
Repeat shitty behavior Monday through Saturday. Sunday, get saved again. Wash, rinse, repeat.
Notice that old Mitch hasn’t said one word about Gonzo yet
As First Lady, Mrs. Fred Thompson’s cause will be to promote the Leave No Lonely-Old-Man’s-Wallet Behind program.
TeddySanFran @ 83

What does the Sleazebucket have to do with AGAG? Whitehouse should be awesome!!!
Joe Klein’s conscience @ 76
When is he not?
Trent Lott – I know the wingnuts in my party trashed immigration reform, but it’s the Dems fault for sponsoring this resolution.
TeddySanFran @ 83
Hey TSF, can you please advise when the Reps are finished their diatribe?
Thanks much.
After Schumer’s fact- filled whuppin’ of AGAG, you’d think these guys would rise to the intellectual debate … oh who am I kidding? *g*
Whitehouse is going to let loose all barrels on McConnell and his band of idjits.
Eureka Springs @ 6
linky
Lott:
Oh, can we please?
Jebus. McConnell must have gotten these talking points from Rove, pure political pap.
Ditto for Lott, now arguing that this is piece of fluff waste of time. I’ll bet that’s what he thinks pushed him out of Repug leadership role, too.
Idiots, cannot understand at all that justice is supposed to be blind to politics — deliberately obtuse, since they are the chief beneficiaries of this lack of blindness.
“It’s not our job” argues Lott — yeah, oversight is not their job, the Senate Repugs think. “Partisan politics”, he argues — yeah, the same ones you used to get and keep a majority for 12 ugly years.
Gah. I want to barf.
Danziger cartoon on Cheney to replace Sorpranos
I just love YouTube :D
I’m sorry, did Trent Lott just say we haven’t done shit for three years? And hte Dems have been in the majority for … 6 months of those 3 years?
Somebody post when Lott is gone. Listening to him is dangerous to my health.
WHY IS HE BABBLING ABOUT THE IMMIGRATION BILL?
RevDeb @ 82
Happening to me too.
AZ Matt @ 98
That’s sooooo gooood!
Repubs: BRIGHT, SHINY OBJECTS – silver-coated organic material Lookee! Over there! No – over there! Look up! Look down! Oops – didn’t say Simon says….
Thanks, -ck-.
Lott’s New Rule: Chairman of DSCC can’t attack Republicans.
Racist Trent Lott just said this bill is beneath the dignity of the Senate.
* guffaw *
Mandrake @ 85
I thought that was the Catholic gig, shows what I know!
Petrocelli @ 94
Are you watching it, right now? The Repugs are throwing all kinds of Bright, Shiny Objects out there!!! Ooh, look how pretty they are!!! :-O
Bush increased the budget from 1.9 trillion when he took office to 2.9 trillion, except for Medicare, Part D does anyone know what he is spending the new dollars on?
PS The war is off budget.
Shorter KBH: I haven’t had an original thought since Karl Rove gave me one.
Mutant Poodle @ 96
Oh, can we please?
I’ve always wanted to see that happen. Just sort of a wacky fantasy I have. I want to see Bush down on the floor of the Senate with that big book, babbling like an second-grader and being booed by Dems sitting up there in the higher seats.
NYT reporting that cloture will fail, not enough repugs will cross over (sorry I can’t make the link work).
Lott has finally stopped speaking
emptywheel @ 100
EW, I bow to you a thousand times … that you have the mental fortitude to listen to this as much as you do !!!
There is no way Cheney could replace the Sopranos — the mobsters have a code of ethics!!!
Mutant Poodle @ 112
707!!!
Well, so much for calling my senators (Hutchison and Cornyn) and asking them to respect the constitution and rule of law…
Actually, Trent Lott is implicitly slapping Bill Frist as much as he is slapping Reid. He has basically said the SEnate hasn’t gotten anything done since he was majority leader.
And if anyone was wondering–Kaybee is dum. D-U-M dum. This ias close as they coudl come (outside of Hatch) to someone who supports Gonzales.
“Mah goodness…”
Put Kay Bailey-Hutchison down for “Senate’s job is not oversight”.
The Gooper “no effect” argument, works, imo.
CTuttle @ 110
I guess the border filters it, because all I see is a dung heap !!!
RevDeb @ 82

The irony is that the Baptists hate Catholics, although they come together on abortion. It’s so weird.
Elian!
KBH asks how the Senate can spend “a whole day” on a measure that will have no impact. And what impact did the BC impeachment have, pray tell?
“Wha are we not workin’ on immigration?” Kay-B whines.
Sounds like the Repug version of “Don’t throw me in tha’ briar patch!!”
Oh KBH, Brach Davidians and Elian? This is all just disagreements?
Why don’t they have a confidence vote and let the repubs stand up and be counted for supporting Gonzales. That would make for some great commercials.
Kay wants to “put it away” I have a suggestion where you can put it.
Chucks Back! And slaps down KBH from Jump Street!
Pardon me, Kaybe. THere ARE allegations that he has done criminal things. He lied under oath, probably obstructed justice, and appears to have presided over wholesale violations of the Hatch Act.
And, most chillingly, he tried to get a legally incompetent man to enact an illegal program.
WACO?
ELIA GONZALEZ?
What else is on the “whine memo” here?
I wish they’d just say no cloture, lets move on to impeachment.
JPL @ 132
Good point! Notice no one is saying anything good about Abu.
Petrocelli @ 123
No, that would be the US Senate!!! You just have to dig in… *g*
Schumer’s good.
Go Chuck! Points out that no one is defending Abu G.
Mandrake @ 136
Michael Vick?
Chuck: Minority Leader and Minority Whip made my case easier than I could.
Neither could say that they have faith in AGAG…
They know no one has faith in AG. They KNOW no one but the preznit supports him. They can’t defend him, they do what people do when they can’t win arguments, they bring up diversions.
I can’t wait for Whitehouse. As good as Schumer is being I think that Sheldon is gonna clean their clock.
w00t livebloggage!
Mutant Poodle @ 141
There is Hope in Dope… ;-)
Schumer: Nobody coming up here saying they have confidence in the AG, just diversion. Heh.

Schumer was elected to NY House same year he graduated Harvard Law. Has never had a job outside of legislative AND has never lost an election.
Per wiki…
Go Claire McCaskill! She’s my Senator and I hlped get her elected…

Why don’t the Dems just offer to yield their time to anyone with an iota of confidence in the Attorney General?
Whitehouse reading the prosecutor’s brief right now on the charges against DoJ under AGAG
PeterK @ 173
LHP or EW told me that Whitehouse was USA … righteous indignation is representing Rhode Island !!!
WH: You can say this is a partisan exercise, but it may take decades to repair the damage done.
There you go, Repubes. You show you have no shame and contempt for the law.
Is Whitehouse the Sen. who defeated Chafee? Just curious.
the toobz are really screwed up here.
PeterK @ 178
yes.
OK…Reid has to go.
He can’t get enough bile built up to call out the Repubs on their accusations against Schumer without reading it from a piece of paper?
Can this man not speak extemporaneously? Time for someone else to take the reins and show some vitriol when it is needed.
And Harry…if you fought in the ring like you speak in the Senate in the face of bogus charges with what passes for outrage, it’s no wonder you are not a fighter.
Please, Democrats, get someone else to represent our anger, our outrage.
So will Joementum vote for cloture?
