So, I’m not quite settled into my new Facebook digs, but people around here say they’re all decorating their places:
June 9th, 2007 at 8:37 pm
Seems everyone’s quiet. Maybe this is too heavy. I’ll see if I can do something more fun and put it up.
we’re all tweaking our Facebook pages ;-)
Mine is pretty raw so far, but it’s not so drafty as some of my earlier haunts (photo of Machu Picchu courtesy of these folks.)

wow, I’m quoted in the main post — thank you Pach!
LOL Loudon, you should always be quoted and Hi Albert… I told folks on other page this was here, didn’t link though. My Bad.
Alfred Kelgarries @ 1
Alfred!!!
Evenin’ AK, how goes it tonight?
Hey Pach – nice decor you got
I let downstairs know (and linked it)
Just joined facebook, what a fun idea. Probably won’t decorate until winter. Its summer in Minnesota so time to be outside gardening!
Afred E. Chimpy wallpaper, of course.
Pach – I’ve got clients who are putting up a health clinic in or near Machu Picchu – the pictures and vids were simply breathtaking.
Suzanne @ 7
See Suzanne is so much nicer than I.
Ok, in self-defense, everytime I tried tonight to link and post to something else, I booted myself from the lake. And had to re-start my emails when I returned, and as a hunter and pecker, that actually required effort :-P
Y’know, in real life I’m a shy and reserved person…but dang, this Facebook stuff is fun.
I’m skeptical of giving info to facebook. Why?
looks like FDL FB is making gains on MyDD FB.
That is a great picture you selected, LL.
Good evening pups, EPU’d when registering for facebook do we use our real names or our nicknames that we use here? Late to the party!

cause of murdock buying myspace?

We must crush them. I expect to talk to Matt Stoller later tomorrow, and it would be nice if I could talk some smack to him about it.
Invite your friends and family!
(blushes) thank you, Suzanne :-)
What is that picture? Machu Pichu? Or is it the Pueblo indian ruins?
Pachacutec @ 17
heh, good! And i will.
LoudounLib @ 11
Is Loudon in Maryland? Near DC? Or Virginia? My geography sucks, but I used to know the coolest woman from Loudon. IRL knew, not online….
Its just near Machu Picchu, around Cusco, according to the source site, linked.
Y’all realize those of us who aren’t members of facebook don’t get to see any of your nice decor, don’t you?
Hi, Pach! Had some Peruvian-style empanadas this week from the ‘Hungry Inka’ people at the farmer’s market. (If you ever have to be in the San Fernando valley on a Wednesday evening during the warm season, it comes with a recommendation. You may have to stand in line to order, though.)
Alfred, wha’ happen’? You got the non-zed and then you disappeared!
lolo @ 15
Lolo, there is a mix.. facebook wants a first and last name – but there are ways of not giving a real name – I used Suzanne TwoTon since twoton is part of the name of my blog
Dee, Loudoun Co. is in northern VA — we’re about 35 miles or so west of DC.
Hey Pups -
So I signed up at Facebook, but they wouldn’t let me use my blog identity, which pissed me off right off the bat.
I have to say, that place makes me feel old. But I am trying to figure out what to put in the profile. It’s all so very formal
Carol Leonnig’s 5 Myths about Scooter and the Slammer is finally on the frontpage at WaPoO, if you’ve not seen it. It’s pretty good.
Suzanne, if the tech folks are about — each time I’m posting a comment tonight I’m getting the spinning “your comment will appear momentarily” that won’t go away, but if I do a hard refresh I see new comments.
LoudounLib @ 29
same here
Hi Pups — I lurk therefore I join. My new facebook page is http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=553923831. Hope the thought police aren’t lurking to get our IRL bios. But then, they’ve been reading our mail for almost 7 years and we gotta figure they know who we good guys are by now. There’s too many of us for them to get us all.
LL – that is happening to me too when I post – I’ve let tech crew know about it.
LoudounLib @ 29
Oh, thanks – me too.
I now have three facebook friends (and you know who you are!). Rome wasn’t built in a day.
AlexandriaCynic @ 31
Alex VA, by chance?
tw3k @ 16
I just don’t like entering unnecessary information into internet data bases. I still have a problem with it, although, I guess since I post on blogs they could land a helicopter anytime at my place and haul me off into the wild blue yonder (except that I am so unimportant and boring to them, thank goodness) nevertheless, I don’t like answering questions that is none of their business. If I decide to divulge something about myself, that is my business, but I don’t like handing out things like email addresses or anything else like that for some reason. I don’t know why, but I feel that way.
LoudounLib @ 34
Yep — not far from you and PAch and others in the National Capital area.
AlexCynic — nice to meet you, neighbor!
Howdy!
What’s up with the facebook stuff? Building a FDL community there?
I just got home from work, and I’ve poured myself a glass of wine. I turned on a recording of a hilarious movie from 1942: “Orchestra Wives”. I taped it last week, just based on the name. It is about a bunch of catty women who are married to men who are members of a big band. A chick fight just broke out. So funny! I can’t beleive this movie is 65 years old.
LoudounLib @ 29
I’m having the same problem – safari on mac 10.4.9
LoudounLib @ 29
Same here.
For those with posting comments wheel hanging – the tech crew was able to replicate the error and are working on fixing it now.
NewDealFarmGrrrlll @ 39
Me too, I feel that I am in constant Disney Land…:)
Hey NoVA locals, I’ve been known to frequent the Arlington Drinking Liberally, which meets at Cap City Brewing Company at Shirlington on Thursday nights, 7-9PM.
Stop by some week. I was out of town this past week, and may miss next week after I cover the Libby decision on bond, if I’m writing late, but then again, you never know. But who needs a mummy? There’s plenty of good folks there.
thank you Suzanne!
just woke up, had to take out the trash, feed and water and potty the dad, and heat my supper. did i miss anything? (oh and now i have to finish tiredfed’s pdf link and send it to him.)

What does it mean to “poke” someone in Facebook? Is it grounds for divorce?
Suzanne @ 41
[ tapping foot ]
LoudounLib @ 26
Do you have a very cool old building there, two slave homes, or something that was turned in to an herb shop? The woman, a friend of my ex-in-laws, used to own it… She and I had so much fun talking herbs and cookery.. I was sorry to lose custody of her in our divorce, but since they had known her for 40 years, I had no re-course. But I was still a favorite of hers, ever after….

The pleasure is all mine. We should think about arranging a Lakeside party some time. All FirePups in the DC area converging on a backyard or public park or something. Kind of a FirePupMeetUp. Not to replace the blog experience (and every single day learning) but maybe to create some actionable synergy. Just sayin…
Pach, thanks for the info on Arlington Drinking Liberally. I may make my way down there sometime!

Hi blessed mods -
Likely clean-up at aisle 184 on primate conflicts.
(fingers and toes crossed the tech crew fixed it) this is a test message and if it work, i take back all the comments i made last night about the smells coming from the tech room
Suzanne, I know that there are some glitches going on but ‘leave a reply’ isn’t remembering my name and email so every time I post a comment I have to retype the info. Anyone else having this problem? I am using IE7.

LS @ 60
will do, and BTW i am also getting the comments not posting bug…:(:(

Ok, something’s slow, and not right and I doubled up posts AND added a link to another post I was gonna reply to.

Pach: Putting it on my calendar now. Schedule’s whack right now with new investors and all but I’ll seriously try to get over there. We only have a little over a year to get ready for the election that will certainly turn the SCotUS for the rest of my lifetime and I’d like to leave no stones unturned. Oh, and a little conviviality…

I can’t say I don’t disagree with you. And on many levels, including marketing, registering so many personal details bothers me. Skepticism aside, FB, does allow you to remain fairly anonymous registering only the details you wish publish.

Yes, it is good. Thanks. I suspect it will have little effect on the public debate on this issue. No sensible discussion of this issue has for quite some time.

Hello everyone.
I’ve been feeling kind of depressed today. Trying to write about the Issa Deputy meeting with Yoo Hoo. Being humored and condescended to is my favorite friday adventure.
How’s everyone else feeling tonight.

I’ve certainly FUppedUp before and certainly will FUpUp again. Nice to do it in good company.
Hey Mods, seems like on my MAC Intel Dual Core in Safari, I have to refresh page to actually see my most recent post, and if I don’t, and post again, it sometimes, not always, attaches my NEWEST attempt to my older reply . . . hope that helps.
OS X 10.4.9 if it matters.

Maybe I’ll post my grandmother’s empanada recipe sometime, though it’s more Puerto Rican than Peruvian, I think. It’s hard to say, since my Peruvian grandad married a PR woman, and they cooked together.
I’m having this notion of posting somehow connected to a worthy fundraiser sometime. . . or is that too cheesy an idea?
AlexCynic, I couldn’t get to your FB page from the link you posted earlier — matter of fact, it jumped right to my page when I clicked on the link :-(
Weird thing just happened. I got locked out of the comments. Had to switch from Firefox to IE 7 to get back in.
dmoore — The most important thing you did was get in the door and in front of the Deputy. Now, the next step is to maintain the relationship (Massachusetts ‘pups can give you good advice on that).
How the meeting went isn’t nearly as important as that it went at all. Believe me, you’re on your way now. Congratulations.
Strange occurrences in the toobz tonight!
At least the Techs don’t throw us all outta da house, like what happens over at The Orangerie (kos).
LoudounLib @ 71
No sorry, I was never there, but she showed me her pamphlets and stuff prolly 20 years ago. She was a very cool lady, her first hubby was killed during WW11 and she re-married another career soldier… She got very liberal and in to alternate therapies and herbs as an older lady…. I had many hours of pleasure discussing medicinal and culinary herbs with her… She had a degenerative disease and one of her children started the herb farm with her, but I wasn’t sure the daughter was gonna stick with it, once she was gone.. I can’t beleive I am blanking on her name…. Anyway, I need sleep…. night all…….
FDL crack tech crew is working on the problem with posting comments and the wheel getting stuck.
Patience please while they curse and yell and grab the duct tape (I don’t even want to know about that one)

When I was a little kid (6-9 years old), my neighbors in D.C., were from Caracas. The Grandmother used to sit out on the back steps of their home and make these corn “patties” about 1/2″ thick everyday. I was one of those kids that liked to eat at everybody elses house, except mine, and those corn things were to this day one of the most incredible things I ever ate!!! They were like a tortilla, except they were much thicker and had a much more distictive corn flavor. They tasted sort of like a “Frito” without so much salt. What was that??????? I want a recipe!!!

Well, it was TRUE!

No!! Screw Issa. He’s no angel. You spoke truth to power and there is tons of muscle behind you. You will never convince Issa personally to agree with your position, if that is your goal – that is futile. Oppose what he stands for, that will reap progress.
I’ve tried three time to post a comment. I keep getting that rolling wheel.
And, what I was trying to say is I am depressed. The meeting with Issa’s deputy left me feeling yucky.

Don’t make me turn on the tv, please.

We’re all beta-testers for just a little while longer. This is smooth compared to “other” transitions.
Good evening dear friends. Hope some of you are still awake.
For the newcomers to the thread, the FDL tech crew is working on the problem with the wheel spinning and hanging up with trying to post comments.
In the mean time, I’ve been working around it by submitting my comment, and after the wheel has spun for about a minute or 2, then I do a hard refresh.
Yes it is a pain in the ass but it will work. Just be aware, the comment you submitted will show up in the typing box after the hard refresh so delete it before typing another comment in the box.
Hey there TexB :-)
Hi Tex!
TexB @ 121
Evening Aunt Betsy. How’s things in Texas these days?
Okay, I ‘ve had trouble getting a comment posted for about a half-hour. If this doesn’t work, I’m going to have to turn on the tv. Please, please don’t make me.
And, what I was trying to say is that yesterday’s meeting with Issa’s deputy left me feeling tres bummed.
TexB @ 121
Hi TexB, Hope you got snail mail today?
okay, back from previous thread.
First, as a serious student of non-linear relationships, I must warn that in most cases, 999 out of 1000, coinkydink is just coinkydink. If there is indeed a higher order of connection, our feeble minds and dedicated but still embryonic sciences cannot detect it. Yet.
So, with that caveat, allow me to analyze the unusual win today.
1) Horse was a filly. Fillies rarely win.
2) Horse ran at Belmont, where another famous
filly died and was buried.
3) Horse racing as a sport has been a great
source of national renewal of spirit before.
Consider Sea Biscuit.
4) We are all on edge about horse racing because
of the unfortunate death of Barbaro.
5) So, taking the above list into account, how
many points of correlation do we have?
answer: 2. They are that a filly won, and
she won at a track where another famous
filly was buried. Everything else is not
unusual.
6) How could this become unusual enough to
start my “slan tendrils” (scifi in joke)
to twitching? By adding another unlikelihood.
For example, what if the filly had won the
triple crown with this race? Or the jockey
was directly related to the previous famous
filly’s jockey? If this filly was born on
the exact same date (day and month) as the
famous filly. If some truly strange natural
phenomenon had contributed to the win? And
so on. Regrettably, at this point, no
tendril twitching.
7) However, I also have been sensing “something
in the air” lately. I think that this event
is serving as a catalyst to help some of us
perceive the coming change or rearrangement.
Okay. Hope This Helps. Your Mileage May Vary.
tw3k @ 94
Yes, there was a list of about 10 systems, mine was not on there, so I clicked other. No luck, but it’s okay. I’m not wild about the idea anyway.

TexB – is that TexasBetsy? I’m gettin’ confused with LooHoo, SnarkKassandra and several others changing their names. Heck, I’m not sure who I am anymore! :)
I’m gonna hit the hay. “Orchestra Wives” ended with a big rendition of “I’ve Got a Gal from Kalamazoo” – I didn’t realize (until I googled it) that this movie not only featured this new song (which became #1 on the billboard charts for 8 weeks), but the movie actually starred the members of the Glen Miller band. What a hoot it was. Those meddling orchestra wives really messed stuff up, but one sweet “gal” fixed everything.
One hazard of watching that film: I fear I may have “kalamazoo-zoo-zoo” in my head when I go to bed.
Thanks Tw3k for info on the possible Facebook selloff. Rupert decided a few years ago that he wanted to own the internet and he’s been madly buying online assets. Because, letting other people do all the hard work and then swooping in and dropping a huge wad of cash on them, is much much easier than actually creating something.
TSF one would think (yeah, what a concept) that if the Pentagon thinks they can turn on teh gay with a bomb, they must think they can turn off teh gay which means they no longer need DADT
Loo Hoo, my email domain wasn’t listed either (verizon.net) but I was able to join up. C’mon and join the fray with us ;-)

That does not happen, but I have to refresh the page every time I post or I get the endlessly spinnig wheel. I also cannot access the comments all from Firefox.

Yes, they’re yere. Some leave tomorrow night and some on Monday. After a full 24 hrs they finally started treating my niece & nephew like family and not ex-family, and things are going well. Night LL.
Rupert Murdoch’s dad [later knighted Sir] Keith was an Australian journalist who exposed the hubris of the failed Gallipoli campaign to the western world held captive by military censorship. Speaking truth to power was the key to breaking the iceberg of ignorance that kept the public quiescent.
Why doesn’t Rupert take after his dad? It seems ironic that Fox is about using power to hide the truth. Passion without truth is pretty useless if you ask me. Come to think of it, so is Fox News. And is Iraq unlike Gallipoli?
Night LoF. Sleep well.

Night night neighbor. Hope to meet you FTF soon in the DC FupUps.
dmoore – you there?
href=”#comment-751478″>Eureka Springs @ 127
Will check tomorrow or Monday. Right now I think I am going to crash. Been a long couple of days and I still have two more before I can relax and get my life and my house back. Night all.
Glad to hear that things are going well with the visiting relatives. Cause I know what it’s like when these things don’t go well. The worst thing is that you can’t make an excuse to leave early because it’s YOUR home.
Night Aunt Betsy. Sleep well and enjoy your family.
here is my face book profile
What’s been happening is that after a comment has been submitted, it doesn’t go away. Have to delete comments before posting anything new. It’s an adventure!
demi, do not turn on that teevee!
Evening everyone.
twk3, Looks like you’re having a great time in your FB pic!!
Night sleepers.
Eveniong RonD. Welcome to the wonderful world of FDL beta testing.
Hi Ron
ThatSinger @ 48
The best way I can put it is its like flirting with someone.
dmoore
re issa
don’t let the bastards grind you down.
this reminds my of what i did recently and though the parallel is tenuous it is never the less real.
BLACKBERRY CLEARING!
not an overlarge patch, but at the stage of really taking over.
Soh
equipment-
secateurs,those really,really big secateurs,
leather gloves,(my friends)thick as, heavy, woolly, large long sleeved pullover and
gumboots.
and weirdly it was kind of fun in a gawd i’ll be glad when iv’e finished kind of way.
the best bits were pulling the rooted canes clean out of the ground.
the other bits not forked out will be watched and when evident will be jumped on,trampled and generally forbidden to thrive out of bounds.
blackberries are quite tasty, especially in a jam
scratches were inevitable but they have all healed now
it was worth it.
So-Facebook, is it? I must confess, I have avoided such sites as FB and NySpace like the plague, figuring that it’s difficult enough to protect one’s privacy online as it is.
persiflage @ 170
Persiflage is right but you CAN say it’s night night time and let your guests fend for themselves.
Check out the mass Facebook joinage tonight and ask Cassie if she wants to see the links. She’s become my model young, up and coming civic citizen. My kids turned-out OK (one liberal republican and one liberal Democrat) but their kids are as liberal as I am and wouldn’t vote for a republican for anything just in case someone might think there was some justification that allowed an intelligent being to support any republican until all approporiate karma is resolved (in we don’t know how many decades.)
Loo Hoo. @ 175
heh, thanks. Yeah I was messing around with one of those keychain cameras in cam mode with realtime gauss sharpening et.al
AlexandriaCynic @ 181
what’s your facebook name?
AlexandriaCynic @ 181
Cassie’s FaceBook tutorials begin when?
DrD.-Beta testing? Is that why the timer wheel never stops until i reload and I have to enter my info every comment? I thought it was my machine-I just found out my hard drive is 95% full.
LooHoo , which one are you on facebook?
RonD @ 185
Yep. All kinds of strange and wonderous things are happening. The poor techs are certainly earning their mooney tonight.
Here’s my facebook photo. Even combed my hair special for this photo. Enjoy!
RonD @ 180
Check out my profile… I think one can give as much or little info as they want.
Here I am.
Kinda got lost in the crazynet.
So, Loo Hoo, I had The Look?
I never was one to keep a straight face.
I’ve seen that friggin spinning wheel so many times tonight that when I close my eyes, I still see that friggin spinning wheel.

Why doesn’t Rupert take after his dad? It seems ironic that Fox is about using power to hide the truth. Passion without truth is pretty useless if you ask me. Come to think of it, so is Fox News. And is Iraq unlike Gallipoli?
———————————————-
Don’t let that fool you into believing that Sir Keith was a passionate servant of the truth. He wasn’t. He was a young reporter during WW1, he later became a publisher and his attachment to the truth loosened quite a lot. He never let the truth get in the way of raising circulation. He also used his power to influence politics. That is, he taught Rupert everything he knows. It’s just that Rupert plays it out on a much, much bigger stage.
Gallipoli has little in common with Iraq. The former was a series of battles where Turkish soldiers held the high ground while Commonwealth troops were expected to fight their way up sheer slopes, overcome Turkish machine-guns and advance. They never had a chance. In Iraq, on the other hand, taking the ground was no problem, the difficulty is with keeping it.
Good morning. I just opened a facebook account. Now what do I do?lol
TexB @ 186
I haven’t figured out how to get on yet. I’ll look it over again tomorrow.
Called dmoore, and she’ll try again.

ES #189,
I can’t see it without logging in-and as yet I have no account. Thanks-I will most certainly check it out tomorrow. I have avoided these sites, like I said, but I so enjoy being a part of this community that I can very easily see myself taking the plunge-tomorrow, after some sleep. MsD and I just got home from celebrating our anniversary-so FB will have to keep till then.
Suzanne, I did a semi-official report for Christy and Jane about the meeting with Issa’s dd. It’s a little over one page long. Can I post it here, or is that too long?
Bonkers, is that really you?
Eureka Springs, I always thought you were a female, and you turn out to be a gorgeous male!
Cross-Referencing: The Guidelines’ Approach to Offense Severity When the Crime Is Perjury
Patrick Fitzgerald, the Eliot Ness-like Special Prosecutor, did not invent this cross-referencing for this case. On the contrary, he was following the explicit instructions of the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines themselves.
Under the Guidelines, the offense severity for someone convicted of perjury or obstruction is the greater of either the severity rating for generic perjury/obstruction, or the severity rating of the offense being lied about or covered up. In essence, the Guidelines treat someone guilty of perjury or obstruction as an accessory after the fact to the offense underlying the lies and obstruction.

Night RonD. Sleep happy.
no space.. would you like me to email you so you can just reply?
Alfred Kelgarries @ 196
Could you sing us song? It’s goes something like this:
“Daisy, Daisy, give me your answer do. I’m half crazy all for the love of you. It won’t be a stylish marriage, I can’t afford a carriage. But you’ll look sweet upon the seat of a bicycle built for two. ” ;)
I sent it Suz.
demi, dinner was a lot of fun. Met the new boyfriend of one of my best girlfriends, Diane. She stayed here at Heartbreak Hotel for three months after her boyfriend broke up with her. I’m so happy to see her all sparkely again.
Loo I’m glad you had a good time.
I worked in my yard all afternoon and I’m kinda wacked. I think I’d better hit the hay.
Thanks everyone for your comments and advice on the innernetthingy. I guess I’m too tired to play with the refresh button and waiting Foreeeever for the new comments button to work.
Oy!
Night all. I’ll catch up tomorrow.
Ouch — 2:30 am. Must get sleep. Bye pups.
LooHoo, I’m waiting for the NSA truck (parked on my tubes) to clear it, copy it, and then deliver it to my inbox. /snark
Night dmoore. Sleep well without spinning wheels.
Night AC.
Looks like everyone went to bed anyway, Suz. I’m going to try Christy again at the address above. It was returned earlier.
Suzanne @ 217
Personally, I think they are parked on the Lake tonight. ;-/
dmoore – think C-Span if you have to hit that *other* tube. night
I think you are right, LooHoo, in that everyone has gone to bed. Let me email you the CHS email address to send it to.
Ed*ard Teller @ 99
Responding late – short story is trip was good – am too tired to find my Cliff’s Notes coverage.
Ultimately I will send linkys to photos, but I have about 1,000 to sort through.
And, um, not that I have anything against women, but I am a he…
Nite Dr. Dick. I doubt I’ll dream of spinning wheels. Got too many other things to worry about. Like lack of Habeus Corpus. :)
bonkers @ 213
Yeah, smarty pants, but he’s off in cloud cuckoo land pretending to be an embryo, but I’M RIGHT HERE!!! :)
Sent it, Suz. Second time it didn’t go through to Christy. ? Undeliverable, no such recipient.
Well, all this refreshing and refreshing and endlessly spinning is exhausting. I think I will head to bed and the kitties. Take care of yourselves and enjoy the snark.
Mutant Poodle, can’t wait to see your pics of Alaska…glad you had a wonderful time.
Hey Loo Hoo
Why not give the new discussion board a try on FDL FB a try?
g’nite all you ‘pups!
Loo
I had the look?
Maybe it was the way he opened the meeting with Go ahead, ask me anything. We’ve got nothing to hide. It was a Big Red Flag.
What was it about my demeanor that had him So Protesting Too much?
dmoore–I respect your effort and courage. But I expect you’re beating your head against a rock. Nothing good can be expected from the San Diego North Country Evil Trio: Darrell Issa, Duncan Hunter, and Brian Bilbray. They are nasty pieces of work and respresent everything we are working to nullify. The people on their staffs can’t be worth a thimblefull of spit.
My district got rid of Bilbray in 2000. But the roaches always find new digs and people who will support them. Issa’s got big bucks, some seniority, and a safe perch. Maybe you should look at supporting efforts to unseat Bilbray. That’s my own intention. He’s the only one of the Evil Trio who is vulnerable. Hunter’s Iraq-War Veteran son will surely replace him in ‘08.
Anyhow, thanks for trying with Issa. What a jerk he is. His staff is clearly modeling him.
Also, Loo, did you get on the Do Not Email list?
Kidding you.
But, it does kinda make me wonder.
dmoore @ 232
On defense by default, but their conduct is indefensible. But you did more than most, and I am glad you went, and reported to us. Brava!
persiflage @ 192
Thanks for the perspective. As the British went on to create Iraq in its present form post WWI, the ambitions of men to dominate the land and its people/resources haven’t changed. I guess my point about Gallipoli is that evacuation in that case proved successful in other ways. Would that be the case today? Perhaps in context with a larger war as in WWI — keeping some of our powder dry would seem prudent. Besides I believe the land is theirs not ours.
Hey Loo Hoo
Why not give the new discussion board a try on FDL FB a try?
Wow, that’s cool!
neokneme @ 236
The evacuation of Gallipoli was the only successful part of the story. As an Aussie I learned the Gallipoli legend before I could walk and it occurs to me that there is ONE big similarity between the Dardanelles campaign and Iraq. Poor intelligence. The British High Command had maps and drawings of the land that showed gentle hills when, in fact, the terrain could not have been worse for an invasion from the sea. Then, having acted on the poor intelligence, they refused to see the truth of the matter and maintained the pointless attack for about 8 months.
The proclivity of Western nations to presume their superiority to indigenous peoples hasn’t changed since the days of Empire.
So true!
Except now, months have become years…
… and the intelligence wasn’t just poor…but fradulent! (And what wasn’t bogus was actually good. What a calamity!)
neokneme @ 239
The only comfort I can draw is that the public these days would never accept the appalling casualty numbers that WW1 produced.
Joining late, here, due to server problems at FDL that Firefox couldn’t handle for several hours, so eventually I turned to my browser of last resor, and IE found a way.
Darn! No way I’m going to be able to read 200 comments before everyone falls asleep! Anyway, I was, as Pach says, over on Facebook setting up, and pondering what could be done with it all.
Now to read some comments!
Bob in HI
I don’t have any idea how people endure the situation in Iraq. Our casualties are bad enough, but the population is really at risk by our arrogance.
neokneme @ 242
In my gloomier moments, I wonder where and when the child will be, or has been, born who, fuelled by a rage that only invasion and occupation could create, will be the one to mount an attack so terrible that 9/11 will fade from our memories completely.
time for this tired firepup to head off to bed. i’m seeing that spinning wheel when i close my eyes – not a good sign.
see ya tomorrow night for late nite
g’nite all
For those who were wondering two stories down, at Jane’s Block Party II, the broken link for my “tribute” to looseheadprop in her lead article has been fixed, thanks to Suzanne, I think.

Woo Hoo, managed to overcome my tech phobia long enough to sign up on MF but cannot figure out how to do a linky or post a pic but did get away with the first name npb and dear sleeping mr brat will help me with navigation after we’re up and about tomorrow.
Sweet dreams to all you delightful late niters including our hard working moderators.
Thanks all for another memorable SNL at da lake!
Joe Klein’s conscience @ 178
Its really just a way of getting someone’s attention without, y’know, actually having to say something. And then, if you feel so inclined, you can poke’m back. Isn’t that just about what adolscents do anyway?

Is there any reason why we should not create a group for the state-based roots project google groups? Or, rather, why *I* should not create a NY State NetRoots entry, and then inform the Google Group?
kirk murphy @ 114
Indeed! Issa now has been given due warning~ but he’ll still likely claim that he didn’t see the chapparel fire coming backed by the Santa Anna winds.
Let this guy burn…work hard on his opponent’s campaign and whenever he tries to worm his way out of his crooked military lobbyist deals and past Bush-devotee statements make his actions well known.
He and Jerry Lewis are the Doolittle/Pombo pair of Southern California.

BTW Issa receives the greatest amount of political contributions from military contractors than any other Representative. His district is replete with contractors and military bases and he is the dispenser of war-related largesse. Hard to see where complaints by his constituents are ;ikely to sway him in the calculus.
morning…. anyone else up yet?
morning, selise. I sorta up, I think.
ixnay @ 254
i’ve already have my first cup of coffee… love summer mornings, i wake with the sun.
i’m all excited – ‘cuz hugh’s list of bush scandals made it to the front page of reddit, with lots of comments. major props to hugh!

5 Myths About Scooter and the Slammer
Good morning, pups. Today in the NYT we have Ms. Dowd’s column called “Outing the Out of Touch,” where she asks if you’d rather share a foxhole with a gay soldier or Mitt Romney; and Thomas Friedman is in Israel writing about their young high tech innovators. I guess Frank Rich is on vacation as there’s no sign of him.

Coffee and tea are ready, and because it’s going to be another horribly hot day here today (it was over 100 yesterday) I decided to a treat was in order so it’s eggs benedict for breakfast, or eggs florentine if you prefer. Have a wonderful day.

this morning i can’t post a comment without fdl hanging (i have to refresh the entire page).
not complaining… just thought you might want to know next you communicate with the techies who keep the site going… this is a new problem.
mac os 10.4.9, safari, g4 ibook.
selise @ 266
I’m having the same issue. Comments do seem to post but the ‘your comment will appear momentarily’ message and the spinning wheel seem to get stuck and the only way to get past that point is to do a full page refresh — upon which point, the comment appears as normal.
Same issue here, and it happened to me yesterday once too. A new glitch!
Christy’s got the Talking Heads thread upstairs
And I’m having the same problems as the rest of the mac os/safari crowd
twolf1 @ 260
It’s interesting to contrast Carol’s excellent article with David Broder’s commentary a few pages away, where he yet again insists that there was no underlying crime:
Pheonix Woman had some choice words about Broder’s article.
