The G8 summit wrapped up today in Germany, where President Bush was likely offering back rubs and the Germans were, no doubt, reciprocating with offers of their famous pretzels. (Essen Sie die Brezel!) While most of the world was stunned to hear Bush even mentioning climate change this week, residents of Greenland were hearing something unusual, too: A sound of thunder. (Don’t worry, Ray Bradbury, this isn’t another “screwed a-hole” stealing the title of one of your stories.)
ILULISSAT, Greenland (Reuters) — Atop Greenland’s Suicide Cliff, from where old Inuit women used to hurl themselves when they felt they had become a burden to their community, a crack and a thud like thunder pierce the air. “We don’t have thunder here. But I know it from movies,” says Ilulissat nurse Vilhelmina Nathanielsen, who hiked with us through the melting snow. “It’s the ice cracking inside the icebergs. If we’re lucky we might see one break apart.”
Oh, Vilhelmina, if only we were all that lucky. I suppose luck is a relative thing when you dwell near a place called Suicide Cliff.
A new island in East Greenland is a clear sign of how the place is changing. It was dubbed Warming Island by American explorer Dennis Schmitt when he discovered in 2005 that it had emerged from under the retreating ice. If the ice cap melted entirely, oceans would rise by 23 feet, flooding New York and London, and drowning island nations like the Maldives. A total meltdown would take centuries but global warming, which climate experts blame mainly on human use of fossil fuels, is heating the Arctic faster than anywhere else on Earth. “When I was a child, I remember hunters dog-sledding 50 miles on ice across the bay to Disko Island in the winter,” said Judithe Therkildsen, a retiree from Aasiaat, a town south of Ilulissat on Disko Bay. “That hasn’t happened in a long time.”
Disko’s been dead for decades in America, too, Judithe. But at least we can start dancing on Warming Island now, right? And there’s plenty of time before anybody who visited New York for the 2004 Republican Convention will have to pretend they really care about the place again. Bush will be 104 years old in 2050, when the big deal he brokered in Germany yesterday cuts emissions in half. That is, if anybody comes up with any plans to actually limit emissions at all. Bush’s “enormous step forward” contains no mandates whatsoever.
The more the surface melts, the faster the ice sheet moves towards the ocean. The glacier Swiss Camp rests on has doubled its speed to about 9 miles a year in the last 12 years, just as its tongue retreated 10 km into the fjord. “It is scary,” said Steffen. “This is only Greenland. But Antarctica and glaciers around the world are responding as well.”
I’m glad I’m not the only one who is frightened by a tongue retreating six miles into a fjord, if you know what I mean. But is this really that scary? Isn’t there a good side to the accelerated destruction of the processes that have made our planet the only habitable sphere in the known universe?
If you’re a fisherman in Greenland, however, global warming is doing wonders for your business. Warmer waters entice seawolf and cod to swim farther north in the Atlantic into Greenlandic nets. In this Disko Bay town, the world’s iceberg capital, the harbor is now open year-round because winter is no longer cold enough to freeze it solid.
Disko dances!
Warmer weather also boosts tourism, a source of big development hopes for the 56,000 mostly Inuit inhabitants of Greenland, which is a self- governing territory of Denmark. Hoping to lure American visitors, Air Greenland launched a direct flight from Baltimore last month, and there is even talk of “global warming tourism” to see Warming Island. One commentator, noting the carbon dioxide emissions such travel would create, has called that “eco-suicide tourism.”
Eco-suicide tourism. That’s what I call upside. NASA Administrator Michael Griffin just might be right after all. Maybe global warming isn’t “a problem we must wrestle with.” Maybe it really is “arrogant” for New Yorkers and Maldivians to be whining about their respirational goals instead of embracing Bush’s “aspirational goal.”
“Will the new framework consist of binding commitments or voluntary commitments?” asked CBS News’s Jim Axelrod. “In this instance, you have a long-term, aspirational goal,” [Bush environmental advisor Jim] Connaughton answered. Aspirational goal? Like having the body you want without diet or exercise? Or getting rich without working? “I’m confused,” Axelrod said. “Does that mean there will be targets for greenhouse gas emission reductions, and that everybody will be making binding commitments?” “The commitment at the international level will be to a long-term, aspirational goal,” the Bush aide repeated.
What more do you want, New York? We have a long-term goal. Bush isn’t ignoring the problem, Steve Benen. He just doesn’t want to be arrogant. He’s keeping the promise he made to us when he debated Al Gore:
GOV. GEORGE W. BUSH: If we’re an arrogant nation, they’ll resent us; if we’re a humble nation, but strong, they’ll welcome us. And our nation stands alone right now in the world in terms of power, and that’s why we’ve got to be humble, and yet project strength in a way that promotes freedom.
They’re gonna love us. This bit of snark is dedicated to TRex, who should be enjoying a “cold one” right now.

uno!
I can’t be first!
Dos? or tres?
Wow, if I knew I was going to have to follow Lew Koch (and an unbelievable post by Dave Neiwert) I might’ve told TRex to scrap his plans and get back to the Lake, stat!
Dover Good to see ya!
Evening, doggies!!
I wonder if anyone besides W calls Putin “Vlad.”
What is with how W walks? Is it how he feels when his member is hitting his leg or what? It gives me the creeps.
hmmph, “uno” lacks the snap of a zed.
Zed plus one?
Nah.
ccmask @ 5
What a week this was, huh? Libby, Schlozman, Dem Debates, GOP Debates, a shuttle launch…
What else?
Evening, DB. Tis a pleasure to have you here at the Lake.
“Aspirational Goal” my ass. Just more *Hot Air*.
What else?
There once was a lady named Paris….
Markinsanfran @ 11
Straight out of the international department of rhetoric. Not only did they say that in a pre-summit press conference, but Hadley repeated it after the deal was struck.
AND, the same language was used by the Australian right-wing government.
Disko Bitch!
Who knew?
Welcome to the Late Nite frontpage, and watch out for Peterr’s spitballs and rubberbands….

Parisite Hilton.
The total dollar value of all of the FTE consumed just today covering this beyond-banal saga would probably suffice to feed every starving Somali child for ten years.
Evening all. How’s life in the Lake? I may have to reconsider my skepticism concerning the existence god(s) now that Paris Hilton is having her over privileged, skanky ass hauled back to jail. Does a heart good. My souls is now completely at peace after a 10 hour hike in the Bitterroots (my body, however is a shuddering wreck).
Their plan is to enrage Walton to the point of apoplectic disqualification.
-
Global warming is also affecting the Antarctic too:
OT from an NYT’s article tonight:
Ms. Hilton was not the only high-profile defendant whose celebrity prompted a raised eyebrow from a judge this week. Also on Friday, the judge who sentenced I. Lewis Libby Jr. to prison this week issued an order dripping with sarcasm after receiving a supporting brief from a dozen prominent legal scholars, including Alan M. Dershowitz of Harvard and Robert H. Bork, the former Supreme Court nominee.
The judge, Reggie B. Walton of Federal District Court in Washington, said he would be pleased to see similar efforts for defendants less famous than Mr. Libby, the former chief of staff to Vice President Dick Cheney.
“The court trusts,” Judge Walton wrote, in a footnote longer than the order itself, that the brief for Mr. Libby “is a reflection of these eminent academics’ willingness in the future to step up to the plate and provide like assistance in cases involving any of the numerous litigants, both in this court and throughout the courts of our nation, who lack the financial means to fully and properly articulate the merits of their legal positions.”
“The court,” he added, “will certainly not hesitate to call for such assistance from these luminaries.”
jayt @ 12
To be put in handcuffs in this situation is pure abuse in my mind, and I just shake my head at how criteria of being human and sensible go out the window. For whoever she is, this is a young person of 26 years of age. Who would not freak out if being played ping pong with by authorities like we could not avoid but seeing today. Today I thought she got between the wheels.
if we’re a humble nation, but strong, they’ll welcome us.
Well, he’s certainly done his part to humble us. Is 50% a passing grade?
The hut is wooden but for decades was permanently frozen. With the ice melting, the timbers have become waterlogged and are rotting.
Anyone seen the Viking ships in Oslo? I say, send the Norwegians to fix this.
I mean, the hut can be fixed, I suppose. But the pole? Maybe not.
Did Bush fall off the wagon at the G8 meeting?
Saw him imbibing some beer on one of those clips.
Then he was apparently sick and couldn’t attend some meetings?
Isn’t he an acknowledged alcoholic?
QuentinCompson @ 18
Methinks Judge Reggie just bitch slapped those suckers back to kindergarten. I love love a judge who does such eloquent snark.
OT, but this update from Conservative-land…Robert Bork, a leading foe of “frivolous lawsuits” and advocate of tort reform (for little people, apparently), is suing the Yale Club for $1 million PLUS punitive damages because he tripped on their dais while preparing to give a speech to them…
Liberal Heart @ 20
I’m proud to share a planet with Judge Walton. Hey, why not have him sub for TRex next time? He seems to know his way around snark.
Well, I guess it’s clear that our next vacation will be in Greenland. Thanks, DB. I’ve always wanted to see Baltimore too.
The sight of those reporters today chasing that police car for several blocks was unreal. They were sprinting down the middle of the street, trying to keep up with a cop car. Insane.
Evenin’ all — I got nothin’! Except for maybe a tad bit of Schadenfreude about the Paris-capades today.
Loo Hoo. @ 28
Bring your suntan lotion. I hear that the beaches in Greenland will be excellent next year.
jayt @ 12
She’s no lady.
Loo Hoo. @ 28
I hope any residents of Baltimore here know how hard I resisted making a comment about that town.
But what’s up with the Baltimore-Ilulissat connection?
Maybe the good Judge reads teh blogs. Snarkalicious!
mulligatawny @ 21
Appropriate sentencing outcomes for this offense (twice violating probationary terms of a DUI conviction) would seem to me a relatively easy-to-determine empirical matter.
And, I suspect they would be rather severe in most cases.
The sky may not be falling but the water is rising.
Dover Bitch @ 4
Lew’s tough and that post by Mr. Neiwert was a breath of fresh air and long overdue; but, what’s the deal with that. Tell me true, was it primarily a sounding line, dragging the bottom to see what shit eating, Paul junkies could be dredged up? I get busy with business for a few weeks and all of a sudden there’s nutbags commenting with alacrity on FDL. Is there still sanity in this world?
Dover Bitch @ 33
Maybe the residents of Ilulissat call each other “hon” like they do in Bawlmer?
yellowdogD @ 32
Limerick license.
Dover Bitch @ 29
AC360 had an irresistible factoid tonite: the photographer who took the “iconic” photo today of Paris sobbing in the back of the black-and-white is the same photographer who took the picture of the naked Vietnamese girl running screaming down the road.
Exactly 35 years ago today.
Pretty weird, huh?
Good news for Cindy Sheehan – via Raw Story/Brad Blog: Link
TeddySanFran @ 40
How the mighty have fallen.
Dover Bitch @ 9
I can’t believe I missed the launch!! How is that possible? damn.
Exactly 35 years ago today.
Oh low how the mighty have fallen.
As Scooter pops Rolaids and awaits the judge’s decision re jail versus freedom during the appeal, do you think he followed all the fuss over Paris and her special treatment? Do you think he wonders if the timing could have possibly been worse?
Liberal Heart @ 45
He’s goin’ to jail, soon. Count on it.
David Robinson @ 36
Isn’t Opposite Day coming up pretty soon?
Scooter better have his gladstones packed.
TeddySanFran @ 40
Are you serious?? Guess his chances of a career as a wedding photographer are right out.
Apparently Paris’s indescribable display in court included wailing that was audible through the closed security door leading to the jail after the hearing was done. Lawd, what a wuss! People go away for 45 years with more dignity.
Appropriate sentencing outcomes for this offense (twice violating probationary terms of a DUI conviction) would seem to me a relatively easy-to-determine empirical matter.
And, I suspect they would be rather severe in most cases.
Prisoner are released early on a daily basis in Indianapolis, due to overcrowding, and a federal judge who is pissed about same.
Exceptions to possible early release? Violent crimes – and DWI.
Paris is a sad case whose facade of glitz, media, and fast living came crashing down when she was hauled back to jail…
I just saw some pics of her crying in a car, no makeup, hair all crazy, at Huffpo’s…
I understand why some folks dislike her so much and I don’t blame you…
But I prefer just to let that pathetic case be…
LoudounLib @ 38
Well BWI airport is as close to Our Nations Capital as some smaller carriers can get. And speaking of “hon”, this weekend is Honfest in our fair city.
OT, and forgive me if this has already been discussed, but LooHoo, how did your meeting go today?
Paris was sentenced for violating her probation by (twice) driving on a suspended license – not for her original DUI.
Hi Dover, thanks for the post.
Brownandserve, no disrespect meant from here wrt to Baltimore — I love your town! And I’ve heard about Honfest too, I bet it’s a blast.

John Casper @ 56
Hey John, how have you been?
Ken Lay got so scared of prison he faked his death.
Dover Bitch @ 49
I don’t know. If this trend continues, it could happen next week. (It would actually be a step up from photographing Paris).
he tripped on their dais while preparing to give a speech to them…
Poor Borkie. Maybe Paris can give him some lessons on keeping a stiff upper lip.
goddamm, that was some serious Reggie-snark.
Now, sir, if I might have a word with you about the Sibel Edmonds case…
LoudounLib @ 57
No offense taken. My wife and her girlfriends spent this evening watching a DVD of “Hairspray” to get primed for their visit tomorrow to “the avenue”.
My 18 year old brother would have been 43 today had he not been killed by a drunk driver. Paris Hiton gets me sick.
TeddySanFran @ 40
Whoa. wtf does this mean? It’s too weird. It’s a very odd coincedence.
Now, I’m going to ask everyone for indulgence with my spelling and continuity. I drove 3 hours down to Loo Hoo and 3 1/2 hours back. I’m a bit fried. ‘Course there was also the weird hour with l’il Issa. Maybe that’s part of my friedness.
ccmask @ 43
I still get goosebumps when the NASA person at Cape Kennedy say “Go for throttle-up.”
Brownandserve @ 65
Perfect! ;-)
Suzanne @ 55
I don’t know haow they handle that kind of thing in California, but here in Montana in in Oklahoma where I grew up, they tend to take a rather harsh view of such behavior.
I used to go to Baltimore fairly often. Caught the O’s at Memorial when I could. Even went to some Baltimore Blast games.
RonD, I comment about what a sweetheart you are after you say goodnight. You really are. Shall we wait a bit on that? Don’t want to get OT too early, plus want to wait for demi. It was great, though!!! In a twisted kind of way.
ccmask @ 66
ccmask, I am so sorry.
Peterr @ 68
I was going to take the day off and drive there but we have had so much rain that I thought it was going to be canceed. I’ve lived in Florida for a long time and I’ve never witnessed a liftoff.
ccmask @ 66
I’m sorry, ccmask.
Suzanne @ 73
Ditto that.
Glaciers retreating into fjords . . .
Think of it as highway on-ramps, disappearing into the mud.
Think of it as mall parking lots sinking into the dirt.
Think of it as your driveway, disappearing into the ground.
Disappearing fjords are no laughing matter, especially for the folks that live nearby.
Thanks, Dover Bitch!
Suzanne @ 73
That’s okay. It’s just watching her whole escapade gets me sick. Just like Scooter. Everyone feels so bad that the Architect/Engineer of the War on Error has to go sleep in a cell with a roof over his head and three squares and some light at the end of the tunnel.
LooHoo #72,
Thank you! You are very kind. Sure, whenever appropriate, I’d love to hear how it went. Thanks again.
Oh, and let me say, DB, great post, and you followed Lou with style and grace.
dmoore @ 67
See! Sweetie, I’m here.
Demi’s back in ta-oun. Look out, ol’ Demi’s back!
TeddySanFran @ 14
Careful, TSF . . . I’m right across the bay.
anyone else just lose their “refresh comments” button?
Dover Bitch @ 71
I was probably that idiot behind you in the stands screaming bon mots at the officials. I never swore back then. ;)
and “preview” is gone as well.
That new guy replacing Pace on cspan1 from 05.
Has Dr.Evil been around at all?
ccmask, my sympathies-I had planned on driving over as well to see the launch, then had to work at the last minute. I’ve watched them go up since…well, forever, but until you see it close up-there’s nothing like it. Simply awesome, in the purest sense.
Hi LoundounLib – my refresh button is working (to the exclusion of about everything else tonight.)
LoudounLib @ 82
Yep. On again, off again. I believe they’re still working in the system.
LL- try reloading your browser or clearing the cache.
Hi Pete, well I’m going through the intermittent browser crashes again tonight — might have to go over to Firefox!
ccmask @ 86
I’m about. Just haven’t had much to say tonight; I find Paris Hilton more pathetic than snarkworthy at this point.
Yeah, Ron, next time I’ll meet you there.
thanks dmoore and Pete, have done the reload and clearing the cache — oh well, over to Firefox
LL- Firefox is really better than IE for most things. There are some web sites that need ActiveX but other than those FF is far better.
EvilDrPuma @ 92
There you are. Quiet night for all.
LoudounLib @ 84
I think it’s just you, LL. Everything’s fine for me.
[Note to techies: when you think everything is ironed out, let us know at Late Nite. We’ll run a crash test for you, when we don’t have to worry about blowing things up just as Scooter’s lawyers file something in court. We aim to please . . . and we’re grateful for your work!]
ccmask @ 66
Oh, dear, ccmask. So sorry. My sister would have been 47 now, had her girlfriend not hit a telephone pole in a VW bug. I know how you feel every birthday and deathday.
Peterr @ 77
I know this is true. I must admit I felt conflicted about writing snark on such a serious topic. There was just too much to mock in that article.
Even though Bush didn’t accomplish squat this week (or the past seven years) at least we can take a tiny bit of comfort in the fact that the reality-based community is clearly winning on this issue.
We’ve got a long way to go, and a short time to get there… in the immortal words of Jerry “Snowman” Reed.
thanks all, back with you via Firefox, and sorry for the momentary disruption :-)
Peterr – are we the Crash Test Dummies of Late Night? Is that a good name for a rock band?
WRT Paris, I guess her lawyer and her star power had really led her to believe that she would never do time and the shock of it all really got to her. Or, she has the shakes.
petedownunder @ 101
Too long, I’d say. But I think “Snark” would be a great name for a band.
TSF 40,
“AC360 had an irresistible factoid tonite: the photographer who took the “iconic” photo today of Paris sobbing in the back of the black-and-white is the same photographer who took the picture of the naked Vietnamese girl running screaming down the road.
Exactly 35 years ago today.
Pretty weird, huh?
Interesting to say the least. Do we chalk that up as a coincidence? Or, do we chalk that up to “there are no coincidences”. The irony is what is so remarkable.
Loo Hoo. @ 98
Oh I’m so sorry too! What to say? No words. But (heart).
((( ccmask )))
CC-it’s a deal. I’m in the Tampa Bay area, so it’s only about 2.5-3 hours for me. I have a friend at Patrick AFB, so I can get really close(although he’s TDY in Europe right now).
Dover Bitch @ 4
Here’s a news flash for you Dover Bitch – you are a born writer – and there can be no doubt Lew and Dave are as well. Thanks for your great late nite post!
LH and ccmask, my brother at 16 and my nephew at 18, Halloween and Thanksgiving. Goes back generations in my family too. My grandmother’s brother at 18 on Thanksgiving 100 years before my nephew. Speaking of teh weird Coinkydink.
Loo Hoo. @ 98
Oh, sorry for you. The worst part is that my sister’s birthday was yesterday and she died of breast cancer a couple of years ago. And it has been raining for 2 nights which is so depressing, although we do need the rain. Their birthdays are the 8th & 9th. Sorry about your sister too. I urge anyone with a sister to appreciate it and make the most of it.
Mark Fiore cartoon – Amnesty…Say No
If you haven’t watched this it is something else(and funny too!)
Meeting with Issa’s director was interesting. At first he thought we we nutcases who didn’t believe 9/11 happened. Then he settled down and we actually had a conversation. I can honestly say he knew about half what demi and I did on any given issue. Plus we usually disagreed. He gave us bid kudos for being involved and called us “exceptional.”
I have to say I don’t get the cult of celebrity, where people are famous for being famous. Ms Hilton showed up two years ago at a fancy resort in the Gold Coast (Australia) where we were having an insurance law conference (can you say “boring”) and all the young (male) attendees had to have their pictures taken with her. She finally fled in horror, and I can’t say I blame her. But who TF cares?
ccmask @ 102
Well, yeah. And I heard on NPR that now she’s being held in a Treatment Facility. I’m sure she’s not the only person to get clean in jail.
RonD @ 107
I love Tampa. Going for Juy 4th weekend to the Seminole Cas*no. Mom’s 80th birthday. Sarasota is my favorite though. My job sometimes brings me through that way. Nice place. Great shopping in Tampa.
(MOD NOTE: *edited to allow through spam filter)
Loo Hoo and dmoore, congrats to both of you for taking action and having that meeting with Issa’s director. Good show!
I wasn’t given the brief window of time to edit my post.
Dover Bitch @ 99
Amen.
Wasn’t complaining about your snark, but trying to make the ice and snow a bit more relevant to folks in temperate climates.
I lived in Wyoming for a year, in a basement level apartment. It was great, except for that fact that the back door in my laundry room was unusable for 8 months of that year. The blowing snow filled the outside stairwell, and I didn’t even try shovelling it out. I’d lived in Chicago for 7 years before that, thinking I understood winter, but Wyoming disabused me of that notion rather quickly.
I can dimly imagine what the folks in Greenland are dealing with.
Great post, Dover Bitch -
reminds me of:
The article as a whole describes powerful social results – hope Firepups will give it a read.

Shucks. But I seriously wasn’t fishing there… Lew and Dave are amazing.
Dave’s blog, Ornicus is one of my favorites. If you guys aren’t familiar with it, you should check it out.
I’ve been gone for 2 days, working (roasting) out in the TX heat (with a cold, miserable, ugh)…
What happened with the Loo Hoo Issa meeting?
tw3k @ 85
Is he the Admiral that Bushit replaced the General with today?
The tech crew (who are still quite sweaty and very cranky) say they are working on the important stuff, like sluggishness and the like before they get to tweaking the bells and whistles features.
Oh, boy. Suzanne’s seeing doubles again!
LooHoo #112, that’s great. It sounds like you handled it wonderfully-any basis for an ongoing dialogue with him?
Dover Bitch @ 119
Definitely. Orcinus is a regular stop for me and I have directed students there for a primer on white power groups and eliminationism in America.
TeddySF can I ask an OT question? I have Aussie visitors in town next week from Sydney (I’m in Marin this week) and they’ll be staying in SF. We’re taking them to Tadich’s for lunch, any other iconic places that a tourist might miss on their own?
LoudounLib @ 115
Outreach to the wingnuts is never easy, but very essential. Even if they don’t change, it forces us to figure out exactly what we believe and why.
Woo Hoo to Loo Hoo, and more to dmoore!
what is going on?
I THINK I saw another Late FDL Post……which said that its comments were closed….and then vanished in a puff of smoke…..?
He repeated told us that You guys are really the exception. And explained to US how most people don’t pay attention to what’s going on. Apparently his boss doesn’t either. He didn’t have answers for most of what Loo Hoo asked him in terms of how The Representative felt about specific issues.
(I think he wanted to ask Loo Hoo out! well, how could blame him…intelligent, passionate, pays attention and cute) I also think he was wondering if she is considering running for office! Really.
Who is Issa? I just looked it up on Wiki but I know you’re not talking about Jesus of Nazareth….

You hang out with all the famous folk huh? As Helen Razer said :
Paris, quite simply, is no longer a question worth answering.
In a moment of intellectual stasis, I once compared Paris to a late model mobile telephone … her pure emptiness and ability to simply convey rather than produce information made her the culture’s most glorious Sidekick. I apologise.
After today’s predictable ending to the Paris narrative, there is nothing more to be said or understood. This Teflon girl represents nothing more than the emptiness of the culture by which she is devoured.
Today, Paris is dead. Long live Lindsay.
Peterr @ 127
You said it, brother. Loo and I were talking about that very thing this morning as we were nailing down the questions. AND, tryig to find a way to ask a question that wouldn’t throw him into a defensive fit. Not only what who we are, what we believe, but what our goals are and how to best achieve them. It was a good day…in a lot of ways.
I left Pauly (Issa’s director) with four questions for Issa that he could not answer:
1. Habeas Corpus-how strongly does Issa feel about the “Great Writ?”
2. How does Issa feel about permanent bases in Iraq? (He mentioned that “wars come and go, and this war has lasted longer than WW11.” Duh.
3. How does Issa feel about borrowing from China $2 billion a week to finance the war? To which he basically blamed consumers for being so damned greedy.
4. How does Issa feel about Blackwater, which is bleeding our military of trained soldiers. This was the only question all day that I felt like he came our way.
He said he will get with Issa and answer my questions. (Questions that he didn’t have canned answers for.)

Did you bring the computer??? :) What post?
Is the dog still under the bed with you?
ccmask @ 130
Darrell Issa’s wiki entry is pretty good. One nugget that might sum it all up in a nutshell is this: he entered ROTC at Kent State in the fall of 1971.
I’m reminded of a quote attributed to Alan Sheppard – the first US astronaut launched for you kids – who when asked how he felt just before the launch replied, “How would you feel sitting on top of a million pounds of high explosives, all of which was made by the lowest bidder?”

Dover Bitch @ 149
I agree. Can you imagine what goes through their minds while they have to sit there for hours before launch??? If the launch gets aborted, they just take it in stride..if they are “go”, they GO. They are so amazing!!! I love to watch the NASA channel.
Oddmommy – I thought someone warned you about THOSE mushrooms….
LS @ 135
Beats me but we’ll figure it out with all this talent handing at da lake.
petedownunder @ 154
lol
He told us that the district has been gerrymandered and that no dem will ever take it. I saw that as a real CHALLENGE!
LooHoo, I think that was a double dog dare that you run as a candidate.
Suzanne @ 148
Seriously.
Christy and Jane would no doubt be particularly curious, and grateful.
oddmommy @ 140
I didn’t see it oddmommy…
They reported this evening that, get this, Paris Hilton’s lawyer is going to file a Writ of Habeas Corpus. Now, tell me, how timely is that?

My brother lives on Nantucket, which has gloomy wet weather in the winter and a zillion tourists in the summer. I told him its only redeeming feature was that it was the setting for half the world’s limericks.

My favorite shot in the film Apollo 13 is when they are first walking into the capsule and the camera is above them, looking down.
You really get to see how insignificant they are in relation to the entire rocket. Those guys were nuts, but I love ‘em.

Thanks KM – but they won’t be able to take food stuff back with them, Oz has very strict quarantine rules now. Better late than never.

What, the stupid woman still hasn’t figured out why she’s in trouble? And just where did she dig up a lawyer who’d charge so much to miss the point?

Wouldn’t it just be like the U.S.A, to reinstate Habeas Corpus, because of Paris Hilton!!!! If that happens….well.. I don’t know…I just might get religious.

I really have about had it with Ms Hilton. As persiflage pointed out, she is nothing but a hollow shell, who happens to be rich. I generally try to ignore her, but this whole jail thing got my soc*alist back up. I get so pissed off at the way the privileged (like Paris, Dubya, Scooter, and the rest) are generally able to skate through life without any accountability for their actions. I really am happy to see that she is having to do jail time, just like real people.
Petrocelli @ 155

Good of C-Span to pull this old archived stuff out now though.
DrDick, I’m with you on that. She is NO different than any other person who ever screwed up and violated probation, and she should have to face the same consequences.

Try the DeYoung Museum, and be sure to go up the tower and look out over the city. The tower visit is free, and does not require museum admission if you don’t want to do that.
Another thought is to take the ferry from SF over to Alameda, walk across the parking lot to Rosenblum Cellars for a free wine tasting, and then go back on the ferry — it gives you a great sense of the Bay.
Here’s one:
We could have told him, well, oh I dunno, take someone. Anyone. Say, for example, your boss. Well, say he was falsely arrested for, let’s say, Car Theft. If not for Habeus Corpus, he’d not be the Rep for Vista, he’d be the Rep for Cell Block C.
(ya never think of these things at the time.)

ANYWAY. One interesting thing that I uh, THINK is real……learned earlier this evening that Steve Gilliard and I attended the same high school! Hunter College High School in NYC.
No really — it says so here http://www.thenewsblog.net/

He asked what my interest in all of this was. I said that I’m just a political junkie. demi thought he might think we were press because we were taking notes, or that I was managing someone’s campaign. He also was curious about my thoughts on why Jeeni Cricenzo lost. I said that she didn’t get any press, and he admitted that she did a lot with very little money. But it was a very smug, it’s Issa’s as long as he wants it attitude. Pissed me right off.

Well, I think I will follow RonD’s example and head for bed. I need to keep reminding myself that overweight 55 year old men who not exactly “in shape” should not do ten hour hikes in the mountains. Hee, hee! Me, too! Ms. Redshift and I have seen four shuttle launches, including one where we got to be on base. (Not as close as my sister, whose friend was dating an astronaut and got all of us the passes, but still way cool!)
LS @ 164
Huh??? I didn’t follow this story. Are they claiming she didn’t get rights?
petedownunder @ 205
Rosenblum is most famous for its Zinfandel. It owns very few vineyards, but has great relationships with the growers who sell them their grapes. Kent Rosenblum, the owner/founder, is a vet who started making wine in his basement in the 70s, and his hobby became much more than that over the years.
But he still keeps up his vet practice!
As for farms in Berkeley, you need to check out the middle schools, where the founder of Chez Pannise has gotten folks interested in where their food comes from. Alice Waters has led an incredible educational revolution in getting kids to connect the earth with the classroom with the lunchroom.
DrDick @ 214
Thanks, Dr you just reminded me of another brilliant thing said at today’s meetig. The reason the Immigration Bill didn’t pass yesterday is because (I swear, he said this) there are too many 55 year old men with beer bellies who drive fork lifts who are afraid the people who cross the border will take his job.
Like we say, ya can’t make this shit up.
Beautiful pictures there. It looks so inviting at that creek DrDick. I need to go do something naturesque like that.
petedownunder @ 176
Took a friend to Twin Peaks, by public bus that stops very close. Ferry to Sausalito, enjoyed by all. St. Mary’s, I am not a church person, but the architecture is amazing. The energy or “chi” gets pulled up when entering that space.

Good job you two. Glad to hear it!
My .02 on the Paris thing…
My gripe all along is that the rich and influential are treated differently than the common folk. Witness Ken Lay awaiting sentencing in Aspen, as an example.
Paris got jail time, good! About time! But that spectacle today was a travesty. The judge was pissed at the sheriff for releasing her, but mistreated Paris instead. Paris didn’t let herself out, it was the sheriff who made the release. The kid was doing as she was told (for once). I really felt like on this occasion, Paris was being punished for being a rich celebrity, and that’s just as unfair as the reverse.
CTuttle @ 228
Oh, no offense was taken at all. I feel like I should be laughing; I just can’t find the joke, though, unless it’s a bitter one. What a waste of a mortal existence is Paris Hilton.
Loo Hoo. @ 229
Oh who didn’t (check tense). That’s nuttin’. So not a reason not to run. You’re a freakin’ teacher. A pillar of the community.
and Loo Hoo, we would even contribute to the campaign! ;-)
Someone mentioned auctions above…Ebay auctions has been very slow lately. Of course, the postal rates just went up so maybe that is what is causing the slowdown. I had about 30 auctions last week and only 12 sold.
I did inhale.
LooHoo, you know as well as I do that in California, those who did not inhale are in the minority.
I’m just saying…
Good post, BTW, Dover Bitch.
dmoore @ 237
Of course, if you’re a “party host mom,” then all bets are off.

EDP – if you missed my congrats yesterday, congratulations!
tw3k, that was not me saying I inhaled – remember I did that whole protect and serve bit for 24 years.
I’m just pointing out that the question is really out of date with today’s reality – medical marijuana etc.
{Splash}
Howdy, y’all! Dinner time here in Hawaii.
Olbermann replay on the tube. Very snarky about Paris Hilton, and asking what does our obsession with this piece of blond fluff say about US???
Also KO is incredulous about the Bush Administration’s Chutzpah at asking the two Guantanamo judges to reconsider their decision tossing out the two cases last week. I mean, is there a competent lawyer anywhere in the Whitehouse? What is it about “NO” that they don’t understand?
OK, now I’ll go back and start reading the comments.

There are now over 300 contractor’s killed in Iraq. From a dailykos diary:
Seeking information into the circumstances surrounding the deaths of four American contractors working for Blackwater USA in Fallujah, Iraq on March 31, 2004, the families of said victims were told their only recourse was to sue Blackwater USA in a U.S. court of law. Blackwater refused to share information. Now, Blackwater is suing those families for $10-million to keep them quiet.
Ed*ard Teller @ 253
Thanks!
Suzanne, I believe Obama has even admitted that he inhaled.
Me too. Night y’all. Pleasant notbeinginjail dreams.

I wonder if Bush will wink at the pope today?
ccmask, Dr. Hillhouse over at the Spy Who Billed Me has been asking lots of contractor questions about contractor deaths in Iraq.

ET, am I right in recalling that it was you who mentioned the attack on the Liberty yesterday? If so, I wanted to thank you, I never knew about it. I googled it and spent a few hours reading all sorts of reports. Whether the attack was intentional or not it was a tragic loss of life.
Well, night all. I have to paint the side of the house tomorrow. Pray for rain.

tw3k @ 168
Yeah, we’re all supposed to crack up at the very mention of the words “habeas” and “corpus” now. Habeas corpus will just be something that that silly wench Paris Hilton’s folks tried to get her so she wouldn’t … blah blah.
Transparent they are. And strictly at the Machiavelli of Mayberry level.
Dover Bitch @ 285
Go Girl!!! You scold that errant Theropod!!! ;-)
CTuttle @ 278
He thinks ’tis a “quickie” … *g*
He’s a sweet, smart guy with big broad shoulders and bright blue eyes. He’s kind of balding in a cute way. He has little wire rimmed glasses and he’s 42. We’ll see. I dunno if he’s looking to actually date or just make out, so…you know. We’ll see if I feel like calling him in a couple of days.
STILL NO DAMN PHONE!! The seller is under investigation by eBay now for numerous listing violations, but basically they have my money and I’ve got no phone.
Grumble.
So unfair. I’ve been practically licking the screen on my macbook staring at that phone for nearly a year now.
But as soon as I start to get spun up about it, I remember that I’m not stationed in Baghdad, my cats are healthy and happy, and blah, blah, blah. What’s a phone but a New Shiny Toy?
Especially when I kissed a really adorable guy tonight.
Suzanne @ 288
