Last month, before the Iraq emergency supplemental spending bill authorized by Congress, Joe Lieberman delivered a speech to the Republican Jewish Coalition, called “Now is the time for choosing.”
If you can stomach reading another pro-war keynote for the pep squad, the text of the speech is on Lieberman’s site, disguised as the longest paragraph, ever. Lieberman borrowed the title of his speech from Ronald Reagan, who supported Barry Goldwater in an address he called “A Time for Choosing” in 1964.
Reagan was complaining that America was heading down the road to Socialism. Lieberman, of course, was offering the false choice between victory in Iraq and “surrendering to barbarism.”
But Lieberman himself made an interesting choice, himself, by picking that speech and not some of the other lines from Reagan’s oration. For example:
How many of us realize that today federal agents can invade a man’s property without a warrant? They can impose a fine without a formal hearing, let alone a trial by jury?
Hmmmmm. Why do you suppose Lieberman didn’t quote that part? Could it be because he voted for the torture bill that ended habeas corpus? Or was it because Joe was a proponent of warrantless wiretaps as early as 1995?
Why didn’t he quote this part?
Yet anytime you and I question the schemes of the do-gooders, we’re denounced as being against their humanitarian goals. They say we’re always “against” things — we’re never “for” anything.
Hmmmmm. Maybe it’s because he stands with a president who once said this about the surge they both supported:
But those who refuse to give this plan a chance to work have an obligation to offer an alternative that has a better chance for success. To oppose everything while proposing nothing is irresponsible.
Hmmmmm. What about this part? Why didn’t he quote this?
There can be no real peace while one American is dying some place in the world for the rest of us. We’re at war with the most dangerous enemy that has ever faced mankind in his long climb from the swamp to the stars, and it’s been said if we lose that war, and in so doing lose this way of freedom of ours, history will record with the greatest astonishment that those who had the most to lose did the least to prevent its happening. Well I think it’s time we ask ourselves if we still know the freedoms that were intended for us by the Founding Fathers.
Hmmmmm. Maybe it’s because Reagan was talking about a soldier being killed in Vietnam and the freedoms we would lose if we didn’t win there. I suppose history didn’t record the loss of all our freedoms in 1975 with enough astonishment to support Lieberman’s claim that if we leave Iraq, we won’t be a “free nation.”
As the news breaks today that our government has been sending children to secret prisons, I guess it’s no shock that the biggest cheerleader for the war on terror only took the title of that speech and not the choice Reagan was offering in it:
You and I are told increasingly we have to choose between a left or right. Well I’d like to suggest there is no such thing as a left or right. There’s only an up or down — [up] man’s old — old-aged dream, the ultimate in individual freedom consistent with law and order, or down to the ant heap of totalitarianism. And regardless of their sincerity, their humanitarian motives, those who would trade our freedom for security have embarked on this downward course.

Uhh LoudounLib – I think our esteemed punaise writes:, My contempt for Joe Lieberman will never subside.

Two excellent essays, Dover Bitch.
The first one is meaningful in a special way because I’ve seen so much change in glacier size in Alaska over the past 34 years. The diminution of glaciers has been almost a constant for the past 25,000 years, but the recent change in pace is accelerating and accelerating and…

In looking at his reasoning, it would be the Governor’s sole authority to appoint the US Senator, however, the state Legislature, still would play a role, if anything ‘advise and consent’!!! Is the Wyoming Senate in the Repugs grasp???
larue @ 32
From my read of the local papers, these are training facilities only, and they have a jungle training facility set up using unused stuff at Subic Bay in the Phillipines. This company is a training service provider to swat teams and various federal agencies IIRC. Their decision to “move up” into providing full-on mercenary serives is a relatively new thing for them, and as there is almost no public awareness of their role in the process, they seem paranoid about keeping it that way.
To me, this is just standard rethug business practice. Not a sign of upcoming martial law…not yet.
Alfred Kelgarries @ 19
Vic Amar is a local to Bay Area folks, and generally well accepted in his descriptions of legal arguments. The one thing his post misses, however, is the sh*tstorm that would ensue, should the WY governor not pick one of the candidates proposed to him.
Could he win the legal battle? Perhaps. Would he choose to fight it, given the WY propensity for not liking being told what to do by anyone, let alone DC? Doubtful. Very doubtful.
Bob Schacht @ 38

Gotta run for a few minutes, everybody. Back soon.

That was looked at up here back in 2002, when US Sen. Frank Murkowski was elected governor, requiring him to vacate his senate seat. As some here know, he then appointed his own daughter, Lisa Murkowski, who has since been elected in a very close contest from which the state GOP machine continues to withhold computer discrepencies held secret and proprietary by Diebold. Most precincts show numbers of voters which can’t possibly be accurate, some off by as much as 250% of the real vote recorded at the polling place.
Since then, we’ve changed the process by initiative, so that the vacancy is filled by special election as soon as possible.
larue @ 32
This is one issue I am extremely concerned about. I spoke yesterday with an attorney affiliated with the attorney general’s office of my state, who expressed that she/he thought that Blackwater is definitely a concern for the future or our democracy. Helloooooo…..please consider asking Jeremy Scahill to liveblog on FDL — Pretty please with a cherry on top. This is really serious and insidious.
tw3k @ 28
As much as some would like this to be the case, especially right now, I don’t think they will rock the boat. Besides, who would be a worthy Dem replacement? I only know one. Gary Trauner(sp?).
BTW, isn’t it rather appropriate for a liberal blog to have a “left hand” orientation?

Suzanne, I am hoping you can send me Petrocelli’s e-mail addy. I have been given the thumbs-up for you to do so… you can check it out at Post No. 308 on Late, Late Nite last night. I need guidance on some pretty serious issues.

This is an act of genius! The Democratic primaries haven’t even started yet! Is this the first Republicans for {Democandidate} this year? If Hillary doesn’t have a “Republicans for Hillary” already on the books, credit Obama with a finesse! And credit him as well with an extra dose of chutzpah!

I got yer bad choice right here.
Did Turkey invade Northern Iraq or not?
Is genocide gonna be allowed by USA?
Will the Kurds be wiped out?
Will Iran Interfere?
Is it all an Isreali plot to stir up angst and anger against Iran somehow? And encourage USA nukes to fly?
Is DEBKA File a shill of a site for propoganda? THEY ran with the Turk INVASION, which has been debunked by all the usual suspects. Who to believe??
Whose FANNING what FLAMES, in the mideast, and WHY?
My take? Everyone is fanning the flames, and they all want USA to nuke mecca. Sand to glass!

Funny, that this evening someone accused me of being anti-Semitic because I was harsh on Scooter Libby.
For the record, I am proud to be a Jew.
Judge Walton sounded rather pissed off about the tidal wave of good old boys stepping up cup Scooter Libby’s nutsac.

Really, good night.
Joe Klein’s conscience @ 55
So did Alan Dershowitz. I’ve got a hard time putting Amar in the same boat as Bork, though they may agree with each other from time to time.
Amar’s piece may be good (or bad) legal scholarship, but either way he doesn’t get into the political pitfalls the governor would face, should he choose to stand up to that law. Under the present circumstances, I just can’t see the governor pushing the issue.
Joe@55, Amicus Curiae, basically, ‘Friend of the Court’!!! That is interesting!!!
Oddmommy@34
That’s a good post to have come up, though! We should all re-read that one periodically.

tw3k @ 58
We have more voter initiatives in our elections than just about any state. But in 2006 the voters passed an initiative demanding that the cruise ship industry open their logs and engine rooms to inspection to assure they aren’t dumping toxic wastes all over our pristine waters, and that they begin to pay fees for all the free services we provide them. The GOP-dominated legislature, which just finished their session, couldn’t void the initiative itself, but zeroed the funding for the policing and fee collecting processes, even though the funds would come from the cruise ships themselves!.
Leave it to the GOP to find ways to defeat democracy.
Got to go — see y’all later.

Blackwater is a private contractor, like Halliburton. It’s particularly scary, imho, because they are bleeding off our experienced military folks. After 8 or – years of training at taxpayer expense, they can get about 4 times the salary going to Blackwater.
I don’t know how many of you were best in your professions/occupations during the first 6-8 years on the job, but I wasn’t.
This scares the bejeebus out of me, frankly.

I posted downstairs a link to Dr. Hillhouse’s The Spy Who Billed Me. She has been doing an excellent job keeping track of the Blackwater and other secret squirrel types out there on our dime.
Hey, anybody catch Judge Walton’s brutally effective dismissal of the effort to question Fitz’s authority?
“It is an impressive show of public service when twelve prominent and distinguished current and former law professors of well-respected schools are able to amass their collective wisdom in the course of only several days to provide their legal expertise to the Court on behalf of a criminal defendant. The Court trusts that this is a reflection of these eminent academics’ willingness in the future to step to the plate and provide like assistance in cases involving any of the numerous litigants, both in this Court and throughout the courts of our nation, who lack the financial means to fully and properly articulate the merits of their legal positions even in instances where failure to do so could result in monetary penalties, incarceration, or worse. The Court will certainly not hesitate to call for such assistance from these luminaries, as necessary in the interests of justice and equity, whenever similar questions arise in the cases that come before it.”
Ya gotta luv it!
Suzanne @ 88
Thanks to all the vigilant people with sunshine lamps.
LaFourmiRouge @ 90
Speaking of seeing clearly :)
LFR, did you see Marcy’s take on Walton’s response?
tw3k @ 81
Maybe Big Mitch can pitch in on this too, but you write a petition, have some friends look it over to see if it is legal, pass it around or stand at shopping centers and other high-traffic public places, get legal signatures, submit it to the Lieutenant Governor, and – if it passes legal muster – vote on it at the next statewide election.
Tomorrow morning in Wasilla and at the Colony Days Parade in Palmer, people will be handing out petitions to recall my friend the crook Vic Kohring, who has been indicted by the FBI for taking bribes, from his Alaska House seat. I can’t sign because I don’t live in his district, but I’m thinking of taking a copy of the petition to Sarah Palin’s dad’s house for him to sign. He will. But Vic is going to resign on the 17th of June, if not earlier, so the recall initiative is just bush kabuki.
CTuttle @ 59
White House involvement in Justice Dept. Guess he didn’t know there was any…I stated that there was at least an appearance of involvement in Carol Lam’s firing by the letters Issa wrote.
Big Mitch @ 68
You have much to be proud of !!!
When we have heated discussions in Toronto, no one accuses another of being prejudice, since we’re so well integrated, multi- culturally.
I find this only on American blogs, which makes me think that it is only a Rep. talking point designed to shut up people who’re making sense.
newspaperbrat @ 65
sorry I’m so slow. I can’t resist the links..
Big Mitch,
Pete Zamarello told me about the story you related back at the Ron Paul thread. He said Mike hated Barney G from way, way back and that the feeling was very mutual. But I’d never heard the comment you relate in that way. Interesting, and it underscores your earlier point. Thanks again.
larue @ 64
Naw, it was just an “incursion.”
Yes, depending on what the Genocider has that the Decider wants.
No. There are Kurds in mountainous areas of Turkey, Iraq, and Iran. It would be impossible to wipe them all out.
Prolly not.
That’s a different plot. Its got nothing to do with the Turks, or the Kurds.
Depends on what an “invasion” is.
Ain’t gonna happen. Not even Georgie Bush is that stupid.
Chomp away!

It puzzled me a child about that idiocy and it still annoys me when people accuse each other of that stuff on a general basis. Not just anti-semitism either. Spending whole summers in canada as a child inevitably changed my attitude towards racism, besides being mixed myself.

Alaska isn’t a scene, it is an epic. Former lieutenant governor Fran Ulmer said it quite well today on NPR’s SciFri, as she described how climate change has such different impacts on various parts of a state this immense. But Alaska politics is as corrupt as you’ll find in the USA.
Fortunately, the maverick aspect of Alaskans – often more imagined than actual – is leading to the overthrow of the most corrupt political machine in the history of Alaska, a machine that would make Soapy Smith wince – Randy Reudrich’s Republican Party. Its overthrow isn’t the result of efforts by Democrats though, it is the result of the efforts of Republicans and ex-Republicans like Sarah Palin and Ray Metcalfe.
When are we gonna get our tags back, Suzanne!?

This whole little discussion, with your grassroots activity, things like TPM thrown into the mix, and why I’d ever be interested in AK politics. Makes me think of the old saying all politics are local. I’m not really sure why sort of point I’m trying to make. maybe more of an observation, with this whole netroots thing, that local politics are just different now and I can pay attention to things I wouldn’t before.

ET, I have forgotten my navy heritage lingo – what is the position in landlubber please?
Petro, Race, pure and simple!!! I was white, they were ‘brown’, for instance, my sister and I were the only two whites in our High School at the time! We didn’t get hassled much, because we already had been accepted for who we were!!! Some later individuals weren’t so successful, something about ‘White is right’ nonsense!!! My friends will diss Ha’oles in front of me, and then wink at me!!! :-)

Can a Dem governor of Wyoming appoint whomever he wants, rather than having to pick one of three from a list prepared by the Repub state committee?
It’s an interesting question, but I suspect the state’s law would be upheld.
On the issue of Giuliani v. Edwards: it’s interesting RG is attacking across party lines at this point. It makes the entire primary ’season’ seem like one big open primary. I suppose the Repubs see Edwards coming to the fore in Iowa and N.Hampshire, so they want to get on with the fight and not wait until it’s officially in the books. Waiting might be disaster for Repubs. Edwards, as is true with all candidates, must see the big picture and not get in the gutter with the elbower and dirty fighter Giuliani. The issue of how to fight terrorists and the issue of Liberal mindset are somewhat phony. We don’t know the whole story of 9/11 and Liberalism isn’t so important in foreign policy as that’s generally done in a very bi-partisan way (tell Bush please).
Instead, I’d suggest Edwards outclass Giuliani by talking about winning the hearts and minds of the entire Islamic world. He needs to stick to the Carter/Brzezinski policy of turning enemies into friends and placing the militant jihadists off to the side where they are minimized and can be dealt with by a larger coalition which includes Europe and many allies in the Islamic world. Yes, there are many who would sympathize with anti-American anti-Israeli terrorists. But, somewhere there are statistics, probably from the State dept., which show the number of violent jihadists is very small. How many attacked us? How many were in Al Qaeda camps in Afghanistan? How many have been estimated to be in Iraq after our 4 year presence? Is that number nearly as scary as the Soviet Union was?
America’s policy has to be more global than Giuliani can imagine! America’s policy has to be based on American values and our bi-partisan foreign policy process.
America’s policy isn’t about Liberalism, poverty or fighting street crime.

I can spin these fantasies as a professional, because i was the “red team” leader and programmer for such simulations through the 1970 to 1990 period. we simulated everything including an impeached pres nuking a city and declaring martial law. (this was in mid 1970’s, guess why) the bad guys always lost, because there are just too many people devoted to the current political process who have the power to deal with armed threats to it that won’t switch sides.
I’m not saying it won’t happen, not at all. just “not yet”. more pieces of the puzzle have to be in place first, and they aren’t.

Tis true, I have personally given a standing ovation to Brian Lara at the WACA when he scored 132 on a still, horrible, muggy day when the tempoerature was over 100F.
Another difference is that you don’t often see rival supporters fighting. If you find yourself sitting near opposition supporters there’s usually quite a bit of good-natured back and forth but, very rarely, any violence.
oh crap, it worked and then it did not work wordsmith – you doubled again
Petrocelli@164 –
I was working for a big Japanese outfit back in the ’90s, and fell hard for a young Japanese girl who served as my translator (I was doing platform-to-platform CAD conversions). We really hit it off – every day was a treat, looking over each other’s shoulders at the work and flirting madly. I asked her out on a date. (Keep in mind that Tomomi was from a very wealthy, extremely traditional family, and new to the USA). The plan was, to meet for dinner, and a trip to the theatre.
When I picked her up, she met me at the door in a stunning “single girl” kimono, dark blue with a white flower print, and a scarlet obe wrapped around her waist. Her hair was done in the old style – a couple of “chopsticks” holding her luxurious, silken locks in place. She was wearing a pair of black-laquered clogs that forced her to walk in mincing little steps, holding her garb just off the ground.
We had a great time, laughing and intimate and full of passion. I can smell her scent today, 13 years later.
3 days later, her father, having caught wind of our romance, summoned her back to the family home in Fujisawa, there to introduce her to the man he had chosen to be her husband.
I begged, pleaded, tore my hair out, to convince her that she would be destined for second-class citizenship and a narrow life, if she aquiesced to the family’s demands.
She invited me to the wedding. One of the most difficult days of my life.
Are the Japanese racist? Absolutely!

I came within two weeks of marrying a very beautiful Japanese girl (her mother was Miss Kyoto of 1954) back in 1974. She got into fights with the Filipinas at the cannery where she worked. Not to piss you off sweet Suzanne, but I’m getting dizzy again! *G*.
Loo Hoo – I missed it: how’d it go at Issa’s today?
Suzanne @ 222
I hear you, Suzanne – I try to paint with not too broad a brush, as you can see with my last post… but it seems to me to be an arguable premise. I have pondered the question for years, and perhaps I arrived at my conclusion because I worked with the upper strata of Japanese culture – the extremely conservative, traditional class who run the industrial machine. But I am left with a distinct impression.
I will understand if you sanction my comments – no hard feelings, but I feel my wisdom is hard-won and hard to leave behind.
Tenet can’t claim privilege now, review the 9-11 commission and ask him what he tried to tell dubya on August 6th.

The same sentiments are shared by the Koreans for all things Japanese!!! My Katusa Roommate while I was stationed in Korea, had made that abundantly clear to me!!! He showed me some wonderful parts of Korea, that most GI’s never experience!!!
Also, the INTEL Committee should perhaps Mitt Romney where he heard a different version of reality regarding his comments on IAEA inspectors.
Who is briefing the GOP POTUS candidates with incorrect information?
Perhaps some of the Senators running for POTUS would confirm if this material was briefed, since it is a crime to lie to Congress in official capacities…
I’m not moderating the discussion because it was based on personal experience. I am just advising caution in the way things are said. I believe there are racists in every race – it is not limited to just whites to be bigots and/or racists.
ET @ 218
>>She got into fights with the Filipinas at the cannery where she worked. Knock -down, hair-pulling fights.
One of our problems here at the lake is that we are self-selected for a non-gaussian distribution of impressions of other peoples, races, and cultures.
a simple example: would any of US like to be characterized by the thoughts and opinions of an unemployed american living in a rent-controlled apartment in an impoverished rural area, whose parents and grandparents had endured similar condition? my wife was from new england, and there the anit-canadian and anti-catholic bias was immense prior to world war II. in almost every case, these reactions were excuses used by the profoundly impoverished to explain their circumstances. In different sections of the country the targets may change but projection remains just as strong.
We would reject such a characterization because we are NOT profoundly impoverished. we may not have vast financial resources, we may only have a moderate personal education, but we have the one thing the profoundly impoverished do not: self esteem. once you esteem yourself you can then esteem others, and the stereotypes of racist thought fade, quickly or slowly depending on the individual.
Similarly, other cultures than america display the same behaviors. I am an anime addict, having been hooked by my pusher (youngest son) when he was in college. Through anime I meet many japanese folk and to a person they are as unracist a group as one could imagine. But, as they will themselves quickly tell you, they are exceptions rather than indicators. much of japan is very insular, and the problems of their past still cling to the national mindset no matter how hard the educated and enlightened classes try to dispell them. It is not an accident that the japanese leaders are unwilling to rewrite their constituion to allow military operations; the japanese people even yet are too easily let to folly by a poloticial who knows how to tap the national wedge points (and they have them just like we do.)
Bottom line, EVERY nation and culture has racist elements, including our own. We here at the Lake have been fortunate enough to rise above this at least personally. Let us then not point excessive fingers at those less enlightened than we are privileged to be.
(Ghod, getting loquacious in my old age…)
Ed*ard Teller @ 218
there is strong ethnic tension between the koreans and the japanese. on the fiftieth anniversary of the atomic bomb drop on hiroshima (1995) CBS did a segment on the nightly news. japanese and americans were interviewed. there were reflective, thoughtful comments by both groups with no bitterness or jingoism expressed. then the CBS guy brought a korean woman before the camera. she was very emotional, saying
“i wish they had dropped ten atomic bombs on japan!!!”
Petrocelli – Not tonight – it’s too deep a subject to take on right now – I will craft a note to you tomorrow that will give us a firm basis for further discussion. Suzanne,
You’re right. I often find more similarities with people of other races and cultural backgrounds than I do with people very much like me in those backgrounds. Racism is individual more than it is collective or whatever. Kids have to be taught this sort of evil. The more a group is insular, either through choice or by geography, the more deep-seated racism can become in the group’s culture and every day actions.

Whew! Sorta caught up.
First – MacPro, 10.4.9, Comcast cable:
Left Camino, Firefox & Netscape 9 beta (no Opera) alone upthread here (each with many tabs open, including some fairly active flash pages), while I used Safari to read most of today.
No reload issues! You guys seem to have gotten it, or low traffic eases the issue. But the traffic, even this late is pretty heavy. Wow.
Second – One display issue in Netscape (of course) where rectangular blocks of page go gray – refresh doesn’t solve it, but reload does.
Third – what the fuck was TRex doing back here tonight? Boy has a date, and finishes here? Seriously, nice to hear him spending a little “quality time” on the outs.
And DB – strong to the hoop tonight. Sorry she snoozed before I got in.
Funny, though – I admire punaise’ stand on RGJoe, but I occasionally forget he’s actively applying maximum fuckery. Thanks for the reminder, DB.

Oh, punaise, it was great! Issa’s district director knew about half of what demi and I did. He tried to knock us off as whachos at first, then started to listen. Then he was nice. Petrocelli at 261:
Yes, this is the problem. I esteem myself based on meeting personal standards of various sorts. But this type of esteem is *utterly* unconnected from other people, except that i hope they esteem themselves too.
My interactions with others are based on the ancient greek concept of “reverence”, updated somewhat to the modern landscape. I *revere* others by being unwilling to cause them harm in any way, either by projection or by direct assault, EXCEPT in self defense. I cannot revere chimpy or darth cheney because they have shown, by their actions and attitudes, that they are unable to revere me back and instead with to harm me in greater or lesser ways to meet their own needs. since i cannot reverse them, i abhorr them instead. works for me.

Well, I’ve given the punchline away now. She was the wife of a guy I worked with, a strange and slightly scary woman. I always got on well with her but, then again, I went out of my way not to piss her off. One morning he looked particularly worn-out so I asked if he’d had a big night out. No, he’d spent the night trying to get his wife out of jail. I had to drag the story out of him in dribs and drabs.
What was she arrested for? – she hit a guy
She got arrested just because she slapped him?
No, she got arrested because she put him in hospital. She’s 5ft tall and slightly-built, how could she do that? What did she hit him with? A fish. ???? A big fish ???? A big frozen fish. Ahhh, that explained it. I’ve never been able to get the image of that tiny, fierce woman, swinging a salmon round and round her head and thwacking some poor guy with it.
Petrocelli, I double dog dare you to find a link where i favored leather and rope whips.

OK – I can’t leave without tellng this one, since frozen fish came up:
The late winter of early 1975, I was working at Main Fish Co. at Pier 66 in Seattle. The company had been moved from Pier 60 so that the Seattle Aquarium project could happen. They shared space at 66 with another company. Main Fish was almost all Japanese, including the owners. The other company was all white.
One of their guys was outspoken in his hatred toaward the Japanese. One day, while I was shoveling ice on a load of Yellow-eyed Rockfish I’d just unloaded from a boat, the guy came up to me and very loudly yelled at a couple of the Japanese filleters, calling them “Tojos.” He sidled over toward me, the only white guy working for Main, sort of asking me to make a commitment.
I told him we could talk about it in a huge walk-in freezer next to the work area. We went in. I came back out a long time before he did.
The guys I worked with at Main Fish taught me mah-jhong that afternoon and took me out to dinner. My next paycheck showed a raise I didn’t expect.

Japanese cell-based animation. they have taken it to an art form beyond belief! Remember the jetsons, the original space ghost, the herculoids, jonny quest? thst’s about it for american cell animation except disney.
Japan has litterally tens of THOUSANDS of such shows, many sci-fi and many for adults. When a lead yesterday or today mentioned “Totoro”, I knew I was with good people. here is the web site for Hiyao Miazaki, created of “My Neighbor Totoro” and many many more fine animated features. after you peruse it, if you have kids or grandkids, you might STRONGLY consider getting the dubbed version (or subtitled if you prefer) of My Neighbor Totoro. I will instantly become a family favorite, I guarantee!
If you would like guidance to other anime resources, let me know. my aching bank account is all to familiar with them…

alfred (#239):
japan’s peoples have one of the most homogeneous cultures of any nation. that fact, coupled with it’s island geography almost insure that it is destined to resist acceptance and tolerance of ethnic diversity and the kind of social change that entails. japan is certainly the most culturally insular country of any of the industrially/technologically developed nations in the world. that said, it is hard to quantify it’s propensity for racism. i wouldn’t say that japan is any more racist than that of american wingnuttery’s attitudes about arabian, latin american and african peoples.
Speaking of frozen fish – my brother was a big union organizer on the Pipeline, back in the ’70s. Near the end of his tenure as union steward, after a particularly contentious run-in with the site manager, he was evicted from the camp. Just before they caught the heli for Fairbanks, he and his culinary union buddy stole a case of frozen fish from the kitchen, and proceeded to toss fish into the heating ducts which led to every hut in the camp.
He claims that Alyeska eventually had to replace every living unit on-site, to eradicate the smell of dessicated fish.

I like to think the computer liked so it much it kept it to show its friends. That woman was the source of much amusement in our office. She had a tendency to violence, as you can see from the fish-assault. One night he went drinking after work and crashed on the floor of another workmate’s house. The wife was out partying with her friends so he didn’t think she’d care, or even know, that he hadn’t come home. He was wrong. When he went home in the morning he jumped in the shower not knowing that his wife was home and she was steaming mad. You or I might scream, yell, accuse and rant. Not his wife, nope, she went Psycho and I mean really Psycho, as in the movie. He was just washing the shampoo out of his hair when the blade of a carving knife plunged through the shower curtain. Instinctively, he put his hand out and she cut him between the thumb and forefinger, quite deeply. She refused to call an ambulance or drive him to a hospital. He had to try and dress, call a taxi, wrap his hand in a towel and stop her from eviscerating him, all at the same time and with a throbbing hangover.
Eventually, she went away to visit with her parents. While she was gone, he moved house.

Agreed. Educated and travelled japanese persons seem completely unprejudiced. Back in Japan, tho, they say that there is still much work to be done to be ready for world leadership outside of high tech. For example, they have an indigenous aboriginal people, the Ainu, and they treat them no better than we treated the native north american indian tribes, sad to say…
the korea issue with japan is intriguing and says much about their underlying issues. It is thought (and someone please correct me if I am wrong on this, been a while since i researched it) that japan was settled by Koreans who in turn came down from manchuria. The chinese civilizations provided many inventions and cultural elements to early japanese civiliation. but in modern japan, both china and south korea are regarded as “lesser” nations needing japanese help (given the economic realities of the current world, this illusion is especially hard to maintain right now). And note that in WWII japan tried to conquer BOTH Korea and China, again ostensibly to “help them”. China, and much more so Korea, still want payback for the atrocities the japanese inflicted on them in that era. The japanese know these atrocities happened, just as germans remember the nazi horrors. The japanese denial process, IMHO, is much more subtle but in the long run more dangerous.
Persiflage@296 – That is a totally awesome story! And I always thought that evisceration was reserved for critiques of “Gigli”.

If life hands you lemons make lemonade not Cool Aid before the Scooter sentencing I made a comment about how hard it would be for Scooter, Monica and Gonzo to complain about appeals, imunity etc when Paris a little girl was going to do her Time. Now that she has resorted to some INTERESTING tricks to get out of jail only to be put back in again for now the Republicans THINK they can breathe easy. Hah! if anything Paris has to go to jail now because all sorts of people are now wondering if there REALLY is a two tired system of justice. Paris getting press on this issue is bringing in a whole new unpolitical audience to this question. An audience that we poltical junkies could never have WOKE UP with questions of Scooter’s attempt at special treatment.
Alfred Kelgarries @ 334
I know the feeling. I got into anime all over again back about 1997. It took Ghost in the Shell, and i started renting VHS stuff at Blockbuster when it was still rather obscure. Anything i could get. Then i started buying to top it off. So seeing the boom over the last oh..5 years? Has been amusing. My bank account cries for mercy at Mid-May ever year, because of Anime Central in Chicago. Between money for the trip itself and teh dealer’s room? oh gods, it is SO worth every penny.
They know how to write tv shows(and movies with a punch), the only difference is they use an animated medium. Drives me nuts when it gets called ‘just cartoons’. Then i want to shove GITS at ‘em or Gankustuou:Count of Monte Cristo, or Serial Experiments:Lain, Mushishi, Pefect Blue, Paranoia Agent..;and don’t ask me how many other titles..it’ll be MY turn to go on. Then ask them to say ‘just cartoons’ to me again.

The ENERTAINMENT PRESS of all people are Scooter’s biggest obstacle for a pardon now those people could keep a White Woman Missing story going on for months. As they get bored with the Paris in jail week two or Paris gets out of Jail AGAIN they will look for filler. Comparisions to the Scooter case are obvious Good Moring America, Nancy Grace, Larry King etc 24/7 for weeks I wonder if at the next Republican Debate the Candidates will be asked if they support a pardon for Scooter an expected all hands yes and then the follow up question do you support a pardon for Paris? Somehow I don’t think either question will poll well and listening to the tortured “cough” logic of their explanations should be hilarious if only these Jokers were not running for President.
Actually, i just got an email from one of my physician friends about Paris. Seems she was, in fact, either a heroin or an oxycontin addict. how we know this: she was sweet as pie for about 24 hours, till the jolt she took wore off. She expected a ‘care package’ from her family, which would have contained the next dose. it was delayed and later found to have a controlled substance in it. Poor Paris went into physical withdrawal symptoms. Scared he was gonna get blamed for killing the poor girl, the sheriff cobbled toghether a home-release program for her and ditched her. she thought all was fine. then reality landed, WHILE SHE WAS STILL IN PHYSICAL WITHDRAWAL. The judge took one look, sent her back to jail, but as soon as she was out of the limelite, quietly had her shipped to the celeb detox unit they use.
In point of cold fact, the judicial system has in all liklihood saved little Paris’ life. How ironic.
The moderate Republicans will try a yes Scooter made mistakes but he did nothing to be treated that bad defense. With Paris crying in the background the suckers will open up America to a long put off discusion about just how bad jail is. As millions of minority and poor white voters get angry and tell their family and friends about their time being locked up and what they seen/experienced there. The moral outrage argument will then shift away from the Republicans favored ground protecting the good “ingroup” from the criminal “outgroup”. Ussing fear to create a herd instinct panicked rush for more protection from the “leader”. Instead law and order Republicans now have to defend Scooter’s Rights and case for Special Treatment/a Pardon the very opposite of the fear pushing buttons they have been pushing for years. Hypocrisy from the self appointed High Priests of Morality and Values on an issue that thanks to Paris everyone is now paying attention to. Is like leaning into a 360% turn which at the high speed of all this press interest is just asking to fall over and wipe out.
Alfred Kelgarries @ 350
Are they giving her anything for the shakes or are they making her go cold turkey? What is Californa’s regular procedure for dealing with junkies going through withdrawl is she still getting special treatment or is this normal?
actually, the rethug lawyers have figured out they MUST NOT PARDON LIBBY! reason, he can then be forced to spill his guts on cheney and dubya to congress. commuting his sentence frees him from jail time but doesn’t take away his right to the 5th ammendment protections.
unfortunately for this scenario, leahy and co can grant scoot “limited immunity” and haul him before the comittee. if he tries the “i don’t remember” defense, he can be confronted with mounds of legal documents from fitz’s work, then fully usable.
I’m beginning to think this is checkmate and we didn’t even see it coming…
things come undone @ 352
my MD friend is a neurologist at Berkely who practices there at one of the big hospitals. He says the celeb detox unit does a full workup, top flight stuff same as a high-end non-judicial rehab center does. Betcherbottomdollar they have all her med lists from her MD’s by now and have been able to winkle blood and urine out of her. they’ll keep her in the ICU until they know what they’re dealing with and then run her through the same protocols as a commercial, 40K rehab center like Rush Limburger went through. unless she is into some really deadly stuff, she should be fine. However, the sheriff may put out stern statements to CYA. we’ll have to see (and the MSM won’t let us do anything else, will they? :()
oh, a note about celeb detox. it is indeed special treatment, but based not on celebrity but cold hard cash. Paris is a tv property worth many millions of dollars to the entertainment industry, a significant amount of which goes to support the infrastructure of lahlahland. so from the early 50’s when such thing were totally hush-hush today, the judicial system there has a celebrity track. Fair? no. Fiscally sound? Oh yeah!
Comuting a sentence is as bad as a pardon in the Public’s eyes and the comparision to Paris will still stand plus nothing Bush can do can cut off the publicty Paris brings to Scooter nor the obvious linkage in the Public mind to special treatment for the Haves. I agree about limited immunity its a danger we need all those Republican National Committe E mails before we start talking immunity. I wonder what Fitz is doing?
oh ghod, it hurts to laugh, it just hurts…

Cover Your Ass. The mantra by which all public officials live, and most bureaucrats as well (I was one for 30 years or so, then gave it up for a life.)
Here is to hoping Rupert turns the Wallstreet Journal’s creditabilty into that of the other tabloid rags he runs! I dream of a day when college english teachers tell their students that the Wallstreet Journal is not a creditable source for a research paper!
actually, uncle rupert will discover that, despite lip service to “the free market”, he will NOT be pleased when market forces promptly cause a replacement to the WSJ to appear. And it will, because financial managers and mid level excutives LIVE by that paper’s information, for good or ill. They will not tolerate Uncle Rupe’s faux news approach and will actively search for a valid replacment. Heh. In the long run, Rupe the Dupe will be paying billions for a masthead and little else.
Good morning everyone,
Alfred, Thanks for the link lesson yesterday.
Boston1775 @ 362
my pleasure. unfortunately, looks like next weekend before i can put up the Flickr photo tutorial.
I can wait. Did you get the accounts straightened out?
Boston1775 @ 364
oh yes. it was a minor foulup at the point I caught it. the major mess would have happened when many, many payments to various people suddenly bounced because our line of credit was tied up by making payments that should have come out of normal cash flow. in our business in particular (tech security) trust is everything. it would have been “not good” like being at ground zero for a nuke is “not good”. fortunately it didn’t happen.
(now because i’ve said this, will something else happen instead? only murphy knows for sure…:))
BTW, did you check out my link above for a morning guffaw. it’s worth the trip…
Hmm the Investors Business Daily is better organized for investors and their op ed pages are as nut filled as the WSJ’s but the pages are small not much meat for Right Winger political junkies. The Financial Times has less bias more international news but really isn’t geared for day traders. I’m thinking a new national paper would have to fill the slot unless either paper were willing to make major changes. A Financial Paper geared to lefties looking for investments that don’t kill people (military or tobacco) don’t oppress third world people (wallmart) and promote green tech (solar, wind and hybrid cars) would be great but I think that is to much to hope for. To many Wallstreeters think being unethical is the way to make money Mammon is their God. Unethical is by nature a risky investment because it implies a lack of trust/good faith on at least one parties part. People hate being cheated and by nature will try and fix that situation
mornin’ all
Do you mean of the WSJ announcing that Brittany is back on stage? You know, your understanding that Rupert will only force another paper into existence is heartening.
Hi jayt, coffee?
jayt @ 367
morning! Did you ever get that thing with the whack job recruiter fixed? Nosy (inquiring) minds want to know…
coffee? yes, please.
Recruiter – toast.
took the advice of some commenters right here – went over his head to my Congresswoman, Senators, Governor, and the head of the Indiana Natl Guard.
He was in the IN Guard, but recruiting for a firm out of Alabama at $2,000 a head. Now he’s neither.
Boston1775 @ 368
that’s the one. i have friends who literally live by that rag, and do quite well doing so. They usually supplement it with industry-specific trade mags and subscription newsletters (like lundburg’s oil report), but they still depend on WSJ for context and trends.
Since Rupe the Dupe understands only one context (wingnut “truth”) the WSJ will go down the swirly real fast. Therefore, market forces (which are as real as gravity, just harder to see if you aren’t directly involved) will produce an “ecological niche” and the darwinian “survival of the fittest” which applies to ALL systems not just biological ones, will do the rest.
I’ve got a better thesis than that, tho. PREDICTION: The Blogosphere will become the main source of news for all professionals and informed citizens by 2020 and probably 2015. MSM will die completely and be replaced by specialized niche providers by 2030.
Comments invited.
jayt @ 372
any danger of blowback (ie he coming after you or your family physically)?
jayt – can you remind me what happened?
Informed citizens and many professional already get their news from blogs, including some of the same media people who later regurgitate it at their (higher?) level.
But the MSM has a nice little game going, whereby they mock bloggers and insult the intelligence both of bloggers, and more importantly, people who read them.
As I’m fresh out of Luddite land myself, (rural Indiana), I can point to one town in particular where the whole town gets their news from a little daily rag called – “The Republican”.
It’s gonna take longer in some places.
My concept is based on another “survival of the fittest” analogy. It used to be that for most people, bad information made little difference in their lives. Now, bad information can literally kill you, your pet, your bank account, your marriage, your job, etc.
Blogs are rapidly becoming more accurate that msm by a factor of at least 10 and maybe 100. within a few years, this advantage will begin to shift ad revenue. as ads shift to the blogosphere, msm starts to wither. the rest is just details.
Well, a recruiter signed up my son’s step-brother. They both got it in their head that Nick was going to sabotage the recruitment. The recruiter called Nick and threatened to blow his head off (which *I* heard because by that time I had taken the phone). Nick was then told that the step-brother had put out a contract on him. He’s been staying up all night, every night, watching his door with a shotgun.
Yesterday, he left Indianapolis, going out to stay with my folks in the country, where he’ll be safe.
He also told me last night that *he’s* going to join the army, which naturally has kept me up most of the night (I’ve been just lurkin’ here, and kinda not here), if you know what I mean.
I guess it makes sense to go directly to the CDC; why read about what someone thinks of their trip to it?
No need for editors, journalists pulling a story together? Or do you think blogging does it just enough? Links are key.
Good morning anyone..
It’s a work day for me in Fabulous Blue Ridge GA..
mornin’ Mr. Bill – please excuse the mess. Coffee?

Good morning pups!
Coffee please, IV drip if u got it…
My son turned 16 yesterday and I’m really glad I know the guy.
Boston1775 @ 379
sorry, my brain has been trying to do a few too many things at once.
The blogosphere right now is an amateur effort, and nothing wrong with that. but, as has been the case with Josh Marshall at TPM, if you are good enough you can actually make a living at blogging. More and more committed bloggers will do the same. Then, one or them will get to the point that they need service like editing and fact checking and so on beyond what the blogosphere’s invisible hordes can offer. the pros will then come in as a “filter tier” above the primary blog feeds. They will help catch bogus stories (like the “Turkey Invades Kurdish Iraq” one yesterday), and help polish contributors writings, add pictures, links, and so on.
what will make them different from the msm is that the “top tier” will NOT determine content to any major degree. The continuous feedback and input cycles that characterize the current blog system will become the bedrock of the new Blogmedia. Any blog which tries to change this will stultify and fall by the wayside.
And yes, journos do visit places others cannot. but, for example, i doubt any journos have been allowed to see paris hilton in the detox icu, but my MD friend’s brother did. THAT is the sort of six-degrees-of-separation effect that will allow the Blogmedia to triumph over MSM.
And again, i’m only proposing this. i may be totally worng. that’s why comments are good (and the msm doesn’t have or want any, btw)…
Hi egregious, Hi MR Bill,
MR Bill, there’s nothing like fifteen minutes after curfew, he has your car, and he’s telling you to leave a message in his cellphone mailbox.
The only thing which brings me any hope about Nick joining the army is that, when they give him an intelligence test, he should wipe it out.
The little bugger matched my SAT scores when he was in the 8th grade. His last SAT put him in the 98th percentile – so maybe he wouldn’t be boots on the ground in Iraq. He did go to a very good school, which supposedly had a scholarship all lined up for him through Eli fucking Lilly, which was a done deal. everybody said it was a done deal – and then it wasn’t.
He’s always wanted to be in the Army – said last night that he’s been talking to them since he was 14. He should pass as bi-lingual – they’re, naturally, promising him a non-combat MOS. Psy-Ops.
Me – I’m just scared.
Boston1775 @ 387
in my household (which fortunately had no such technological escape hatches), that would equal no cell phone and no car for at least a month, maybe longer. OTOH, it really is of course none of my business.

He doesn’t dare. first of all, he’d lose ALL his cushy comittee positions and lots of other perks. but more importantly, it has been widely rumored in DC that several moderate repubs who are going to go down in 08 would then jump ship to the dems, and thus LIEberman would be left with a rock in his goodie bag. a brown, very smelly and not very hard rock.
Is an alternative scholarship possible?
Don’t know; just got all of this last night. Pretty much maps out my activities for next week though.
Webmaster: The videos recently have a problem. Too large? Something. They take so long to load, I give up.

Me too. Just call his damn bluffs. Isn’t there a p*ker player in the whole Democratic party?
And Harry Reid claims to be from Nevada.
Toe the line or get the f**k out. Buh-bye to the lowest ranking member of the Republican party.
Alfred, we’re using the same math.
MR Bill, sorry to hear about what you’ve both been through. I was just trying to be a little funny.

Dude, it’s ok. My life is ok (although I’m gonna try to find some work other than consturction) and the kids are doing great.
But I gotta go to work now. Ya’ll take it easy..

Isn”t an Alaska senator in trouble with corruption and a Texas Senator having Abrahamoff trouble if we can get rid of a few Republican Senators with corruption charges before the election we could pass laws without Holy Joe’s support. Or Harry Reid could grow a pair and force the Republicans to start paying for at least half of this war’s cost during Bush’s term. We might not be able to pass anything but we can stop funding either Bush comprimises on our terms or we ONLY allow funding for a withdrawl of troops up for a vote.
Alfred @ 393:
Yep. Ole Joe attaches himself to whoever has the power, so he can keep his own. Again, he infuriates me. He’s just like a republican.
Take care, Bill. Hope it’s not too hot today.

oops – I left a comment agreeing with you – which is currently in moderation, because (I assume) I mentioned the name of a game where the players can call another man’s bluff.
edit – oh, there it is – mods are up early today. thanks!
On the senators question, see this link for an interesting possibility.
Unfortunately, both texas and alaska have rethug govs who will simply appoint other rethugs. frozen in place is the ticket for now, but…
my little detectors are suddenly beeping in regards to darth cheney. for some reason, he suddenly seems, well, “expendable”. hmmmmm
morning all.
2d cuppa. good.
Things come undone, it would be beautiful if the republican party took another corruption hit. I think at this point though we have to work hard at cramming the Senate full of democrats in 2008 if we want to see real change in anything right now. Funding only for withdrawal is what our government should be doing right now, because we are technically funding an illegal occupation (every reason Bush gave for going in has been proven false or non-existent). Without the help of the republicans and George Bush with his veto-stamp, how can we?
I think this is the most infuriating time in our lives. Even passing a ‘no confidence’ vote against Gonzo is going to be tough. A commenter on AMERICAblog came up with a great solution on this: HAVE THE DEMOCRATS HOLD A “CONFIDENCE VOTE” ON GONZO, so the record will reflect the traitors of our country.
Ahh – karma shows its sense of humor:

Finally. this BBC Link gives the same story as my md friend was telling me, except they’re spinning it as “self-inflicted harm”, which indeed does happen in physical addiction withdrawal situations.
I love Karma. ;-) I’m still waiting for the big “W” in the Wal-Mart sign to fall on Bush’s head when he goes to one these stores to talk about how Unions are terrible.
jayt @ 406
he may be a sh*t, but he does have a wry sense of humor. maybe we could get him into rethug-rehab or something?
BTW, we are at plus 400 on comments. is a friendly mod cooking up a new thread soon?
Alfred Kelgarries @ 409
We’ve had worse – but he did work directly for GWB, so… probably not.
I especially like the re-telling of the story where a pig bit him in the butt.
jayt @ 411
And the fact that “it did no damage”. Of course, a pig biting a horse’s butt probably WOULDN’T do any damage…
you know, if you’re a good, Bible reading Christian, then the zed thing makes total sense…
Boston1775 @ 413
how? I’m afraid I’m missing something here…
This is just WRONG on so many levels…but so typically faux news:
Just don’t go there.

Here’s a very reasonable and more importantly, sensible analysis of the I-Kurd vs Turkey thing. As expected, the group who wants a war in the middle east (can you say Darth Cheney? Then go wash your mouth out with soap, young man! No one gets away with using THAT kind of language in MY house…) has been feeding the press totally wrong info. In fact, the US and the I-Kurds are doing a careful dance, obviously coordinated with Turkey, to PREVENT such warfare.
linky.
Boston1775 @ 416
my daddy wudda whupped me for missing that one. Fortunately, i’m younger than he is and can outrun him.
I somehow just managed to meld two comments into one. Caffeine, need caffeine…
*scraping tongue* after reading the words ‘darth cheney’ in above comment.
Good morning pups. Today the NYT has Timothy Egan on soem of the consequences of freedom, and Bob Herbert writes about the criminalization of what used to be called bad behavior or pranks.

The coffee and tea are ready, hold out your cup Alfred… Today I’ve got some croissants from a new bakery in town and they’re wonderful. Help yourselves, and have a great Saturday.
For all y’all yearning for the morning thread, here ya go, from Christy Hardin Smith.
Pull Up A Chair
And let’s not forget who was Joe’s biggest supporter of them all against Ned in the primaries…..OBAMA!
There should be zero positive posts about Barack simply based on this alone. I’m starting to think he’s a GOP plant.
If you have followed Lieberman’s career, you will find that he started out pretty liberal — he was a pro-consumer Attorney General of Connecticut, etc. He has slowly and steadily moved to the right, with the apparent goal of running for President from a position where he felt most of the country stood. In 2000, when he was in the VP slot on the Presidential ticket, he was arguably in agreement with most Americans on most issues, as evidenced by his victory in the popular vote (and, as we all know, the electoral vote) with Al Gore. But he has kept moving to the right since then, at the very time that most Americans have moved to the left or stayed in the center, especially on Iraq, individual liberties, and warrantless wiretapping. So now, Liberman, like Bush, is way out of touch with most of the country. I guess Lieberman has been unable to stop his “Joementum.”
Alfred, I think we have a problem.
Sacred oaths and profane laws bind physicians to keep silent.
Your account is remarkably specific; email records tie you to the author.
The private detox/psych hospitals in LA will fire staff who breach patients’ confidence. Public sector hospitals (includinng County-USC) do the same.
All licensed health providers (MD’s, RN’s etc) involved face loss of California professional license – and licenses in other states.
All at the original hospital/network who pass on the info face criminal charges.
Deservedly.
