I’m a little wary of Brzezinski and always have been, but his concept for American foreign policy in the Middle East is probably about 10 steps ahead of things the Repubs haven’t yet thought of.

i did, thank you. my complete ignorance was balanced by the strong motivation of having only a 30GB HD and not wanting to pay the extra $200 to have someone do it under warranty. the first time was a real nail biter, though (thank goodness for ifixit instructions). now that i’ve done it a few times it’s only a minor anxiety attack. and i do love my 160GB HD.

Kernel panics are extremely rare in X, and usually points to a hardware issue or significant UNIX (the OS that underlies OS 10) corruption. In my case, I do some pretty unconventional thinks on my main system, including a variety of peculiar external devices. I was not able to duplicate the panic on another machine under the exact same conditions, so I think it was me.

well, i had run of kernel panics a few weeks ago… your comment brought back bad memories – i was in way over my head. tech tools pro showed no hardware failures and i could boot in safe mode, but not otherwise (even after deleting the startup apps). so i re-installed the OS – three times. no good. spent hours on the phone with various apple tech support people. as a last resort, one suggested pulling the ram, even though it tested ok. i did that, and it worked fine! so, i spent $150 for a new 1GB from crucial. put that in, and the kernel panics came back. more time on the phone with apple tech support. they had no ideas. i couldn’t send them my ibook ‘cuz i’d invalidated the warranty by upgrading my hard drive (more than once). in fit of desperation i went to remove the ram again… and noticed a tiny, itsy bitsy piece of dust on the leads to the ram. gently blew it off (while holding my ibook upside down)….. and everything’s been fine since.

know anyone who wants a perfectly good 1GB of ram for a g4 ibook?

As for the browser crashes, well, like I said, I am happy to beta for FDL!
