During the New Hampshire debate Joe Biden scored one of the best moments of the evening by calling for public financing of elections (above). He didn’t get nearly enough credit for it in the blogosphere because, well, he’s been on the wrong side of some very unpopular issues. But during the previous debate, Biden also gave one of the best answers when asked about the recent SCOTUS decision on abortion, rightly pointing out that this did not portend well for Roe v. Wade:
The truth of the matter is that this decision was intellectually dishonest. I think it is a rare procedure that should only be available when the woman’s life and health is at stake.
But, what this court did is it took that decision, and it said — put a Trojan horse in — through dishonest reasoning, laid the groundwork for undoing Roe v. Wade.
That’s the danger of this decision. Not the specific procedure, but the rationale offered to justify, I think, the next step they’re going to try to take.
It showed more guts and forthrightness on the subject than anybody else managed to come up with, especially in the wake of Brian Williams’ truly horrific question. (Biden cocked it all up on Meet Tim Russert shortly thereafter by going all wobbly kneed over the right-wing “third trimester” frame so I didn’t make a big deal of it, but he does deserve credit for what he said in South Carolina.)
Anyway, booyah for Biden. He done good. It would be nice to hear the other ’08s follow his lead particularly on the public financing of elections, and I hope Joe continues to speak out about this and take the lead because nobody else is doing it. His positions seem heartfelt and it makes him look capable of leadership when he steps out like this.
And isn’t that what Presidentin’ is all about?
(Thanks to ctblogger for the clip, who now has the keys to the place over at MLN.)
Update: Dick Durbin is sponsoring the Fair Elections Now Act. We like.

Hi Jane.
Hi Jane!
Thats 3.
Biden done real good. No more “retail politics”. Run with it Senator Biden. You showed real guts the other night!
It would be so nice to get special interest money out of our electoral process.
Money is the root of all evil.
Lookin’ at you,Deadeye.
Wow, Ezra on Hardball.
Hi Jane!
At least Biden is giving a pointed reminder of why THIS election really matters. Whatever any of us feel about any of our candidates, they are centuries ahead of the alternatives.
I make it a policy to only use the term “cellclump” when referring to the fetus.
(the flow here from thread to thread is somewhat more indolent than that to which i have hitherto been accustomed.)
Biden’s a smart guy. Right-on on many occasions…I don’t know what it is in his persona that repels me, exactly. But repel me it does.

Bustednuckles @ 5
Thugocracy is an ugly word.
In the MSM I’ve been seeing quotes about the US keeping a military presence in Iraq for the next 50 years.
This is insane — do they really think we’ll sit still for it?
I could watch that vid over and over and over again. ;0)!

scooter libby’s team just filed their

free on bond during his appeals. . .
and i will show you — in images and
in text — why scooter ought to buckle
up for the bus to camp-fed!
he is not likely to be free on appeal.
their best argument, isn’t much of
an argument, at all. . .
no — it seems his best argument is that
judge walton himself made reference to “a
tension” between two cases on the issue of
patrick fitzgerald’s authority under the
special counsel statute — but it is not
a particularly momentous one.
if an appellate court were to rule there
was no authority to bring the case, mr.
libby would be home free, true enough — but
to say so, would be, as a policy matter, to
say that there is effectively no law that
the president, the vice president, or their
respective staffs, could break, that could
result in any proper criminal investigation,
indictment and/or conviction — at least, and
most-importantly, where (as here) the normal
channel — the DoJ — is “conflicted” out.
and — note to EW — not even
silberman is going to be willing to
rule in favor of that proposition. . .
do take a look!
Did anybody mention lately that Chris Dodd’s got more spine on a daily basis than the whole blue-dawg wing of the Party? The following was on The Nation blog today:
Senator Chris Dodd, the most aggressive defender of the Constitution in the presidential race, is pushing legislation that would not only restore habeas, but also ban the use of evidence obtained through torture and recommit the U.S. to the Geneva Conventions. “We must recognize that our security is enhanced by upholding our nation’s historic legal principles as we vigorously pursue terrorists,” he said in a statement today. Dodd is giving a major address about his proposal at the Cardozo School of Law Commencement exercises in New York on Thursday, part of a larger effort to prioritize Constitutional rights on the national agenda – and in the presidential campaign. The Dodd Campaign has gathered over 10,000 “citizen cosponsors” for his bill, the Restoring the Constitution Act, while using YouTube, blog and netroots outreach to rally more support.
Brisingamen @ 11
Since the administration, such as it is, insists on engraving that policy in stone, maybe it can be used as a headstone for the republican/fascist party.

All the best……
Bob in HI — Just left you a reply in the previous thread (around 150-something). No idea how to do that “EPU” thing…
For me it it is so simple. The reason we don’t have good government is because the lobbyists and other shady, sundered and many times unsavory financial interests own “our” government.
Biden done good with his call for public financing and the SCOTUS decision by the five MAMs.
Now if he could just pull himself out of the pocket of the credit card companies…
Jane, I’m not sure that I could vote for Biden even with a clothes pin on my nose. His foot in the mouth racist remarks are disconcerting to say the least, and his support of the Credit Card companies totally disqualify him for me. I wrote during the debate that I thought that even with his loud voice, he did a great job.

the smarmy-smirky thing, perhaps?
Teddy’s showing some serious emotion in the Well of the Senate!!! C-Span2!!! Pleading for Amnesty, and Sanity!!!
CTuttle @ 22
I like Teddy. He may not quite have measured up to his bro’s but he’s a good man. Too bad he’s too old to be president.
(chappaquiddick, I know. But that is one very old skeleton.)
Sometimes I think many don’t take the idea of public funding of elections seriously. It is… to say the least… frustrating.
I’d certainly take Biden over Senator Clinton for prez.
oddmommy @ 24
I love Teddy as a Senator. As a Pres, not so much. I will never forget what he did to Carter in 1979 by running against him in the primary…probably single-handedly handing the election to Reagan by splitting the Dem base down the middle, many of whom defected to Anderson or just stayed home. He has been paying penance ever since by continuing to stand up for what is right, but still, it was a bitter pill to swallow at the time. And we are still paying for it as a nation.
Biden also said, when confronted with Wolfie’s “is Peter Pace wrong?” question about gays serving in the military: Peter Pace is flat wrong.
Then he made a funny misstep about no one asking if you’re gay in the holes — um, foxholes. But still, calling the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff flat wrong: WOW!
Biden’s not my choice (and likely never will be) but it’s great to have these voices speaking for our party.
wgg: rogue scholar @ 9
Biden IS a smart guy. The problem is that although he represents Delaware, his ego is as big as all Montana.
If I were the next president, I’d include Biden as an ex-officio member of a lot of cabinet discussions. He’s good in that environment. He knows a lot about a lot of subjects, besides being smart.
But while he may know Delaware very well, national politics does not seem to be his forte. And his ego gets in the way of making good decisions sometimes.

i don’t think any president of the USofA would have the stones to withdraw from iraq…
geopolitically, the USofA NEEDS a land-base in the middle east. there’s really noplace else they/we can go. iran would be better, geographically, being already a couple of hours further east and north.
remember Brzezinski’s book, in the early 90s?
the usofa needs to be able to extend ‘influence’ into central asia…it’s really that simple…in order to counter the influence of chine, russia, and india…

oddmommy @ 24
Similarly, Camelot and Monroe, He’s an excellent Senator, and I had the good fortune to meet him, and voted for him, while I was stationed at Ft Devens, Ma.!!! I also met my Wife there!!!
Biden has foot in mouth disease. He could never be pres. But I like him (’cept for the credit card thing, which is why he knows how important it is to have public financing–since the entire industry is based in his tiny little state) as a Senator.
And he was great during the Iran-Contra hearings.
It’s great that Biden criticized the Supremes for their decision in Carhart, but let’s not give him too much credit.
After all, he’s one of the senators who voted for the Partial-Birth Abortion Ban in the first place.

The idea is public financing.
nolo @ 14, I’m sure that ew has her magnifying glass to the briefing as I type.
Dover Bitch @ 39
Best. Comment. Today.
more important than public financing of elections (even though that’s a worthy goal also) would be the banning of corporate contributions of any kind, any time – no lobbying, no perks, nadda from corporate entities to politicians – would be as well as ensconced like Biden. The nation is allegedly founded on the principle of government by, for, and of THE PEOPLE. No matter how you write the tax laws, they can’t confer peoplehood on a corporation.
.
I don’t mind talk. As long as one has something to say. Even if it is provocative and smart. So much the better.
We’re all looking for the perfect candidate. To match our perfection.
If the current US troop death rates continue the US is looking at around 40,000 US deaths in Iraq once that 50 years is up.

if you’re refering to “The Grand Chessboard”, i read it. and it continues to blow my mind that he is now calling for a withdrawal from iraq. i don’t think he’s changed his mind on the whole global domination thing… i think he just realizes what a clusterf**k iraq is for the usa.
Biden leaves me cold. I’ve a feeling he’d throw me and any women’s rights overboard in order to become president.
I want someone hungry enough to do the job, to jump through all the campaign hoops–but Biden seems way more than hungry in his desire for the position.
the proposed show name Meet Tim Russert still cracks me up.
Does anybody think the nation–this one, you know, ours–that would gas the pets of people they needed to evict from a vital strategic island would scruple to ignore the will of their own people?

DB — that’s a great idea. When is the next debate? Let’s get that question into the mix any and all ways possible.
Because, you know, 9/11 pretty much happened that way. Delays in transcribing the chatter had backed up all summer as the Pentagon ramped up DADT de-commissionings, which they always do in a time of peace.
Of course, public financing is the answer. Everyone knows that. So, what’s the holdup.
Anent John Pilger’s new book:

TSF,
Absolutely. And these jokers spent most of the debate wetting their podiums over the most “transcendent struggle between good and evil” evah!
Why don’t we all just list the 10 things that are a must for our vote. And then match these ten things against the candidates.
yeah that’s the one…
it surprises me, too that he has backed away from the occupation…mebbe he thinks afghanistan would be a better locale?
nah, he couldn’t be THAT stupid…
but the geopolitics of things do decree that the us have a permanent presence in the region…the ’stans’ are mosstly outta the question–mebbe kyrgyzstan?
I think that Biden’s comments on public financing were by far the best comments the other night. By far.

Is that the only choice available? continuation of present policy?
The parliament in Iraq has overwhelmingly voted for US departure.
Only a quisling pupet imposed administration attempts to leave the door open.
Nearly 1 million Iraqi deaths are already staining America’s “honor”.
America’s children in Iraq are not heros, they are war criminals for following your policy.
It is well past time to return to a clean slate to reconfigure both your policy as well as your priorities.
Repudiation of the present policy is the only remedy.
Carrying out present policy is not repudiation.
On this we shall just have to disagree.

i commented back (last autumn) then that all candidates should have to post what music they listen to, tells a lot about a person.if you can find it, go to last fall, that is when his was posted, was a wide variety of music. bobby darrin was in there, so was frankie goes to hollywood……was a unique list, really….his daughters were adding songs to it. now is open to the public.

Oh god… Mickey Kaus coming up on Lou Dobbs…
I know that this is the last thread’s topic, but having watched so many hearings lately (I had forgotten how interesting c-span could be, its been over 6 years!) I think I can articulate what makes me so damn nervous about Hillary.
She is not a transparent person. She fucked things up with the whole travel office / Rose Law firm brouhaha by not being forthcoming. The result was that things that were really nothing were dragged out for years, thus emboldening the rethug base and enabling the Newt take over. I don’t think she has changed.
We need a president who will not only be a strong leader but who will be transparent, open and honest with the American people. That is not Hillary. Not by a long shot.
If we don’t get that kind of leadership in the WH in ‘09, then there is a very grave risk that all the hard work that the Dems are doing in Congress to begin the process of fixing what has gone so wrong, not just in the last 6 years, but during the 90s when the Clintons were bogged down with scandal and the rethugs controlled congress for the most part.
For these reasons and more, I could never be comfortable with Hillary. Yes, I would vote for her over any of the rethugs on stage, but I would have to hold my nose to do so, which is not a good way to win an election. I would have a hard time getting out and really working for her in the way that I would want to work for a Dem candidate.
To those who complain about public financing of elections as being a good idea but a ‘dead idea’, then I ask… what’s your solution?

For the record, Public Financing is an issue on both sides of the aisle. Also, Feingold passed a bill along earlier this year for public financing, and Obama was Cosponsoring it. There are still people paying attention, even if it slips my mind every now and then.

i’m using safari on my g4 ibook, mac os 10.4.9
maybe the problem is compounded by me having the patience of a 5 year old today?
Oh well, time to search archives for something soothing. *s*
selise @ 178
Not so fast, girl – it ain’t just you.
Now that a few minutes have passed:
My Safari crashed, again, and this time rendered the OS (10.4.9) unusable with a kernel panic and requiring a reboot.
Netscape Navigator 9.0b1 beta crashed, but no kernel panic – just a common java overwrite.
Try on MacPro w/same OS specs – slow, but no crashes yet.
newtonusr @ 96
This is very helpful info. Please pass along any updates on this thread so I can direct the techies to one place.
Thanks.
I learned long ago not to use Safari for FDL. If the comment-refresh hangs up for any reason (including a lost connection), there’s no way out that doesn’t crash Safari. Haven’t had any similar problems with Firefox.
newtonusr @ 96
yikes! kernel panics make me panic.
so far, just slow refreshes and some hangs for me (and one safari crash). before today, no problems with safari and fdl.
selise-
i had problems, see my 66, i was no longer able to post here……couldn’t even say goodbye to everyone.
tech guru jamie fixed it.
selise @ 99
Kernel panics are extremely rare in X, and usually points to a hardware issue or significant UNIX (the OS that underlies OS 10) corruption. In my case, I do some pretty unconventional thinks on my main system, including a variety of peculiar external devices. I was not able to duplicate the panic on another machine under the exact same conditions, so I think it was me.
As for the browser crashes, well, like I said, I am happy to beta for FDL!
newtonusr @ 101
well, i had run of kernel panics a few weeks ago… your comment brought back bad memories – i was in way over my head. tech tools pro showed no hardware failures and i could boot in safe mode, but not otherwise (even after deleting the startup apps). so i re-installed the OS – three times. no good. spent hours on the phone with various apple tech support people. as a last resort, one suggested pulling the ram, even though it tested ok. i did that, and it worked fine! so, i spent $150 for a new 1GB from crucial. put that in, and the kernel panics came back. more time on the phone with apple tech support. they had no ideas. i couldn’t send them my ibook ‘cuz i’d invalidated the warranty by upgrading my hard drive (more than once). in fit of desperation i went to remove the ram again… and noticed a tiny, itsy bitsy piece of dust on the leads to the ram. gently blew it off (while holding my ibook upside down)….. and everything’s been fine since.
know anyone who wants a perfectly good 1GB of ram for a g4 ibook?
me too. anything to help the cause.
selise @ 102
Yeah – k/panics best solution is to disconnect all externals except power. No dice? Pull the RAM. Period.
Does it almost every time.
BTW, did you do your own iBook HD swap? That’s quite a job. Kudos, ma’am!
so, if Biden is really trying to run on the right track, the next step is for him to pull out of the CBC/Terrorist Network debate.
Ball’s still in your court, Joe.
newtonusr @ 103
oh. well… now i guess i know what to do before i start reinstalling the OS. hope i don’t have to use that lesson though…
i did, thank you. my complete ignorance was balanced by the strong motivation of having only a 30GB HD and not wanting to pay the extra $200 to have someone do it under warranty. the first time was a real nail biter, though (thank goodness for ifixit instructions). now that i’ve done it a few times it’s only a minor anxiety attack. and i do love my 160GB HD.
p.s. good luck and thank you to RGB and the FDL tech people.
selise @ 48
‘influence’ is different from ‘control’
I’m a little wary of Brzezinski and always have been, but his concept for American foreign policy in the Middle East is probably about 10 steps ahead of things the Repubs haven’t yet thought of.
I wonder how he sees our position in the Middle East today. Maybe the Lake should invite him to discuss it.

MarkH @ 106 –
did you watch/listen to brzezinski testify before the senate foreign relations committee in february? it blew my mind.

Hey, don’t usually frequent the comment pages ’round here, but I wanted to chime in on a fairly significant point that (based on a quick Ctrl F, anyway) doesn’t seem to have been raised.
That point being that you said that:
But I think it would be rather difficult for Edwards, at least, to “follow [Biden’s] lead” on this, given that he’s supported public financing at least since 2006. I’m pretty sure Obama’s for public finance, too, though I don’t have a link handy there.
morning update to the tech folks…. comment refreshes still seem slow and i’ve already had a couple of hangs (have to reload the whole page when the comment refresh hangs).
mac os 10.4.9, safari, g4 ibook
good luck!
