Now this, I like (via the LATimes):
Both efforts seek to ensure that anxious Republican lawmakers — many of whom have said they want to wait until September to assess President Bush's Iraq strategy — get no break from the war over the summer.
"The debate on Iraq will continue," House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-San Francisco) said last week. Pelosi, who in March helped push Democrats to embrace a withdrawal of American combat forces, has pledged that the House will vote on numerous measures aimed at ending the war.
Tom Matzzie, campaign manager for Americans Against Escalation in Iraq, the leading coalition against the war, promised an equally unpleasant summer for Republicans whenever they return home.
"Our job is to go into the congressional districts of members and create a political environment that is toxic," he said. "The public is there already. It is really about focusing their anger."…
"But it is incredibly important that the debate continue in June and July. It keeps the pressure on the White House, and it keeps the pressure on Republicans to break with the president," he said. "At a minimum, we need to be building … for a showdown in September."
While antiwar lawmakers push ahead, so too will the antiwar groups that have played an influential role in the national debate over Iraq.
Americans Against Escalation in Iraq, a coalition of organizations including MoveOn.org, VoteVets.org and the Service Employees International Union, plans to hire 80 people this summer to organize rallies and other protest activities aimed primarily at Republican lawmakers, Matzzie said.
The coalition also plans an aggressive television advertising campaign, particularly against Republicans who are up for reelection next year and seen as vulnerable, such as Sens. Susan Collins of Maine, John E. Sununu of New Hampshire and Norm Coleman of Minnesota.
"Our goal," Matzzie said, "is political extinction for war supporters."
We talked a bit over the weekend about the need for a step back and some consideration of the political roadblocks as put up by the Bush Administration over more than six years of unfettered control over the executive and legislative process versus the six months that Democrats have had to make any headway on clean-up. And how frustrating it can be to not have things happen as quickly as you might like them to, let alone as quickly as the nation might need them to come to fruition. Sometimes it can be a perception issue, but more often what is needed is more of a nudge from people outside the Beltway to get things rolling in the right direction.
That is where you come in…
Time to remind your elected representatives how you feel — whatever their position on escalation in Iraq, for or against, your voice is important. Why? because you are a voter. They work for us, not the other way around. When we had Tom Matzzie on for a chat earlier this year, we promised to update on campaigns with this — and so here is the next step forward: let your voice be heard. Today.
Here is an effective way to channel all of that pent up frustration and anger into something proactive, and more likely to get results than just being peeved. Call the offices of your elected representatives and voice your opinion. Send them a fax. Call their local office and schedule a sit-down discussion with your elected official next time they are in town or, in the alternative, with a staffer who can then take your concerns to the elected official. Show up at a townhall meeting in your area and talk about it face to face. Write letters to the editor of your local newspapers.
Whatever it takes. But do something to move this forward. This is a marathon, not a sprint — but you can only win if you get in the race at all. Let's get to work!

More postcards (flag-draped coffins) are on the way to my Republican representative and Senator.
Haven’t decided whether I should include the Democratic Senator as he did vote against the supplemental.
Maybe I’ll do a couple more to send to Pelosi and Reid…
i’d like to see pro-war dems being held accountable too… i hate to see the war being used for partisan advantage.
I am curious about something. While I call Snarlin’ Arlen’s office all the time, I don’t think he’s ever hosted anything resembling a town hall meeting for constituents. If he has, it’s been for campaign donors or “very important people”. I’m up for more ideas on how to put more pressure on a Bush rubber stamper like Arlen.
Christy!
Jane!
Pelosi?
Christy,
I am fortunate: my senators (Menendez and Lautenberg) and my representative (Pallone, NJ-06) all support ending Bush’s War, and bringing the troops home. What can I do to help convince other elected officials?
There’s $25.07 for the cause tomorrow.
selise at 4 — Who says they won’t be held to account? Call all of them. Voice your opinion to all of them. But when you have limited resources, you target those resources first toward where they do the msot good. A scattershot approach isn’t the most effective means at the moment according to Matzzie’s calculation for the resources that Matzzie is helping to marshall. But that does not mean that other groups aren’t free to use their resources in other ways.

ot, but illustrative of the many creative ways that one can serve one’s country:
http://northernvirginia.cox.ne…..atearticle
Oh yes, exactly. We’ve been beating quite hard on Democratic members of Congress about their positions on the war — but those of us with Republican Representatives and Senators need to “spread the love.” It must be absolutely clear that a substantive majority of the voting public do not support this war and occupation, and demand the troops be pulled out; every day that the Republicans own this continued occupation results directly in more troops dying or injured, more monies spent on the wrong priorities.
Make it crystal clear that if they are running for office in 2008, this issue is going to hurt them at the polls if they don’t bust a move to get out of Iraq NOW.
I was away over the weekend, but am still worrying about that presidential directive. Has there been any reaction from congress? What does the constitution say about countering this sort of abuse?
By the way.

why are they just now telling us that we will be having permanent bases and will stay for a very long time?
Arnie @ 7
I’ve added my mite as well.
Mornin Redd,
The war ain’t goin so well. Commanders in Baghdad are sayin that they are way behind in meeting their goals. They now say that it will take until fall to achieve what they had planned to do by July—(means that the September come to Jesus meeting will be inoperative I guess).
Deaths are increasing not decreasing as the last of the “surge” hits the streets in Iraq.
What’s gonna happen? Well Clusterfuck told his good buddies from Texas that he was gonna fix it so that the next prez can’t withdraw from Iraq (and ruin his excellent little war).
My guess- he’s gonna sign a couple of agreements with the Iraqi govt.
1) A defense agreement- whereby the US promises to provide active combat troops for one more year, followed by a very long term treaty to provide a reduced level of troops for training of the Iraqis and protection of the borders against incursion.
2) An oil agreement which will give 50 year leases to the Iraqi oil fields to Exxon-Mobil and a couple of other US oil companies. The brits will get cut out of the action cause they are gonna leave the coalition of the willing.
This will be announced as a great victory and troops will start “coming home” in the springtime- a part of a general slow reduction down to 50,000 or so -more like Korea as Clusterfuck mentioned.
He’ll say that he’s doin what Baker-Hamilton said to do and reducing troops like the dems want. Dems will have to approve the defense treaty- but it will be very difficult to resist as the White House will say that prez is doin about what dems say they want.
Should be interesting- and it will be designed to take Iraq off the backs of gooper candidates in the fall. It will also insure that there are still troops in Iraq when Clusterfuck leaves office- as he desires.

Yo CHS, I just heard U on the podcast of “Seder on Sunday.” Kudos for the compact summary and backgrounder on the upcoming Libby sentencing. My only complaint was with Sam — though I haven’t measured the airtime he gave to the other two guests, it seemed to me that you got the least. Me no like-a that. Your commentary was far less fluffy than theirs, and Sam should have given that more respect, imho.

This is a very important point, in my opinion. In that Bush and Rove have started the PR campaign to make this an “acceptable” reality – publicly – for the first time. It is vital that Democrats challenge, repeatedly and passionately, the Republican policy of permanent occupation.
The more I think about it, the more I have to believe that Members of Congress understood very well how linked to the immense oil wealth of Iraq our invasion was (the multi-trillion-dollar size of Iraq’s oil fields passed me right by at the time, until recent developments related to the hydrocarbon bill unfolded; but I doubt, somehow, that Congress was as clueless).
But whether Congress knew then, or not, they have no excuse for not knowing now – and it is imperative that Democrats (and all Americans) speak up loudly and clearly on this issue, as Praedor A. did so well in the Sestak thread: we are not an Empire, we will not act like an Empire, Iraq belongs to the Iraqis. Mikael Gorbachev recognizes what we are doing in Iraq right now, and said so in Britian over the weekend: colonizing Iraq for our empire.
We not only have to call it what it is: an occupation – we also have to realize just how ominous, destructive and infuriating our unwelcome military occupation of Iraq really is to Iraqis, and fight back hard against this depraved and despicable corruption of our Constitutional republic for such naked, brazen grabs at the riches of other people and other lands.

Here is an update on Corporal Kokesh with a video link.
I have a question:
I am wondering if the whole war thing is a giant shiny object to keep Congress from taking up impeachment.
Many Congress critters are saying the same thing when asked about impeachment: they have “more important” things to do, such as stopping the war. The way I read this, then, it is in the administration’s (but not Republican’s) interest to string out the war to the bitter end.
The war WILL end. That is certain. But will the BushCo trashing of the Constitution endure, thus transforming our Democracy, and turning us into a giant banana republic, where might makes right, and the Congress fades to irrelevance in the face of increasing presidential power?
Can we rely on Democrats, once one of them becomes president, to roll back unconstitutional presidential powers once they have them?
Well, I guess that’s a bunch of questions.

Is there a “standard form” somewhere that provides a model to submit anti-war resolutions, such as no-conficendce and local impeachment intitiatives?
We need a simple, universal “Declaration of Peace” document, one that outlines demands from “We, the People”, signed like a petition by everyone who is willing to show the courage to support this simple plan. A universal petition demanding local referendums on one issue; removing our troops from Iraq.
The intent of producing this document is to get it added to local, county and state ballots, as initiatives and measures, to make an effort to portray the REAL public will.
Is there a mutually agreeable document “out there” somewhere already?
The more of these identical documents we manage to promote and propose at our local meetings, the more publicity it would create, first locally and, eventually, on a national level.
It could serve both as a general petition to send to our Congresspeople, and as a ballot initiative petition to require a ballot referendum on troops in Iraq.
It would certainly help get the issue into the mainstream.
Just a thought…

if you don’t already know, i do call dems (alot, since i am lucky enough to have them representing me)… and that hasn’t done anything to get me less frustrated (on the contrary)… so, i was just thinking that i might, in addition to calling, donate a bit (i can’t afford to donate alot, so maybe it doesn’t matter), and checked out the webpage – only Rs are being targeted. my comment was based on my reaction to that. i’d prefer to wait until 2008 to put my partisan hat on… but, i understand that is not the case for everyone.
so, i wonder (not expecting you to have all the answers) why does tom think it is more effective for us Ds to target only R congress critters? (was not advocating scattershot) i’d think we’d have more leverage with D congress critters and therefore it might make sense to include a few of both… but, perhaps i’m missing something? unless this is primarily a partisan effort and secondarily an anti-war effort?
not that there’s anything wrong with that… just trying to understand…

there are anti-war people on the right (see antiwar.com)… might try a nonpartisan approach to the anti-war/occupation position. i find that works much better with non-dems, than trying to get them open to dems (or dem organizations) first and anti-war/occupation second.

General idiocy is the usual explanation. Mr. NJP and I think he was trying to triangulate. He voted for AUMF–which is why when Corzine left the Senate to run for Governor, Menendez, Pallone, and Holt were the contenders to replace him, and in a bow to the growing latino vote in NJ, Menendez got the official backing for the 2006 race. Andrews, even tho’ he’s been in Congress a while and wanted to run for Senate, had too many votes for the war to be considered by the Dem hierarchy in NJ, which is pretty thoroughly antiwar.

Citizen Hardin Smith and the Firepup Patriots:
Again citizen Hardin Smith, you and FDL come through in the breach just when it looks like the political corporatists and the oligarchy behind them have co-opted the political moment. After last night, when Mrs. Clinton appeared to “win” the debate over cosmetics and appearances, you come up with a post that puts the debate in context and reassures progressives that the battle to restore democracy is not over. And then, in this post, you use your not inconsiderable skills and hard earned credibility to sound the clarion call to mobilize for the summer offensive to keep the “war” and continuing occupation of Iraq in the laps of the war-makers.
You are right…we have the opportunity to do what we didn’t do in 1968; that is, we have the opportunity to end the war AND the occupation without losing the Democratic Party. Indeed, massive direct action this summer not only cranks up the heat in Republican-held states and districts but it keeps the war and occupation out in front in the Democratic debates. Mrs. Clinton her A*P*C-Murdock coalition handlers are gunna be forced to continue to address the war and occupation not only in strategic votes but in the nomination conversation that will define our politics for the immediate post-war period of restoration of democracy in our country.
The one issue that will stop Mrs. Clinton’s reach for the presidency is the occupation of Iraq. That’s why, A*P*C and the DLC tried relentlessly to scare Democrats from makin’ the war the central issue in 2006…and that’s why Rahm and Steny and the A*P*C-DLCers in the senate have been working’ so hard ta torpedo Pelosi and Feingold.
I am convinced that Al Gore will announce on Labor Day if we can make life miserable for the fascists (and I include Clinton and the Clintonistas) this summer.
FDLers, join your local Democratic Party organization, join up with Move on and any other group organizin direct action in your area and write letters to the editor of your local paper linkin’ the continuing occupation with the economic hardship folks are experiencin right now.

There are fair minded republican politicians that feel betrayed by the loss of their prestige, both in congress and around the world. They are revolting.
Loo Hoo @ 97
Imagine her reaction if you had tried to make the appointment in person.
Anyone know if Team Libby filed their paperwork on time this morning? I’m dying to know why I shouldn’t be able to find out who’s trying to get him off the hook.
Oilfieldguy and Mandrake -
The only ‘hook’ I can think of that might work a little (or at least make the effort feel worthwhile) on the type of corrupt representatives you have [aside from making clear that you know what their game is - colonizing Iraq, for their corporate benefactors and their own Exceptional American Egos], is to mock them for having no minds of their own.
So maybe asking them to fulfill their oaths of offices as our legislators – instead of acting as mindless puppets of a wannabe king in the Executive Branch – would get some traction. You could compare them unfavorably to those who fought the Revolutionary War, while these guys (and gals) don’t even dare to criticize their master with a harsh word here or there, never mind casting an opposing, independent vote. Won’t make them change their minds, I suppose, but might at least sting their consciences (if any) and pride a little.
Loo Hoo @ 97
Wo good for you! That is inspiring.
dakine01 @ 98
Good heavens, and I thought I couldn’t possibly be surprised anymore by the depths to which these people will sink.
Hit rock bottom and started to dig, as they say.

My mom lives in the Piedmont, and every time I visit her, I wonder “where are the progressives?” Mr. NJP and I have friends who live in red states, but they always manage to find other progressives, or live in the little blue islands like Austin, TX, or Raleigh, NC. Have you been able to hook up with anyone through DFA? It really helps to have some allies, whether online like here at the ‘Lake, or in the flesh in your community. Where are you in SC? Pam in SC is from the Greenville area [haven’t seen any comments from her recently, but she’s got good progressive values].
Anyone interested in visiting Rep. Don Young with me if I can arrange an appointment?
GSD #95,
I appreciate your continued attention to the Turkey/Kurdistan dynamic-it’s one I’m watching as well. In my mind, the Kurds are going to go for it-they’ll never have a better chance, and Barzani has no desire to be remembered as the leader who didn’t found the nation when he had the chance. The Kurds also have the tactical advantage of being able to use the US as a shield.
A similar campaign is being waged to get the budget passed and to override any vetoes that come down. Since the budget battle is really the domestic version of the Iraq fight, I’d suggest that people get to any town halls, rallies and protests on that theme as well.

Exactly what I thought last night! I think I may have even written a comment to that effect.

Oilfieldguy @ 90,
I’m thinking of saying much the same thing to my Democratic congressman, for whom I DID vote. I’ll give money to anyone but him. Once burned, twice shy.
AZ Matt @ 115
I don’t know why it’s been so difficult to beat these guys, perhaps my yogi mind is over- simplifying but Bush & Co. are acting like an abusive husband while the Dems and rest of America act like the abused family, living under an oppressive God.
Maybe I’ll toss this at Pach and hear his response.
Catch you all after the Hockey game, on Late Nite with TRex !!! Hugs & Kisses !!!
Frank P. @ 110 – Marcy has linked to the various Libby pleadings at TNH, over the last week or so (see Libby’s 5/25 and 5/30 responses in particular). As far as I know, there were no further pleadings due today. Judge Walton has already ruled that all sentencing letters will be released to the public, starting tomorrow, after minor redactions.
It’s not clear that the letters will be available via PACER when they are released, which is why Jane and Marcy I believe plan to get copies of them while they are at the courthouse tomorrow, if possible.

I’ve decided to do this as well as pictures of protests that happen here with ‘Power To The People’ splashed at the top.
My reps are Repubs – my senators are ReThugs – talking about fiscal responsibility and then vote for an open-ended drawing out of monies for this focking war. That’s NOT fiscal responsibility; it’s fiscal irresponsibility.
What did I miss?

Honorable Darrell Issa
Representative for the 49th District of California
1800 Thibodo Road, #310
Vista, CA 92083
Dear Congressman Issa,
I would like to schedule an appointment to meet with you to discuss your thoughts about the occupation of Iraq and perhaps other issues as time permits. I will bring a friend and perhaps family members.
Please ask your staff to look at your calendar and schedule me at your earliest convenience.
Sincerely,
Terry Olson

I find most modern-day republicans to be revolting.

Looks good to go!
Mandrake and others: It might be good to just call the local Democratic party and drop by as a volunteer to answer phones or stuff envelopes or enter data. From my experience, the people who do any party work are mostly in our camp. The activist Democrats are really great, for the most part. They will know who else is in the fight. If you don’t have a local party organization, call the state party and find out how you can hook up with others.
There may also be peace organizations or other places to find like minded people. It is a total downer to feel so isolated in this business.
great pickup, AZ Matt!

Can the Dems please boot Rep Jefferson already?
pow wow @ 124
I thought this morning was the deadline for Libby to argue that some details should be withheld. No?
BTW, I heard Rep. Udall speak today about the Iraq summer. He basically said the the Republicans will lose a lot of votes by September if there is no “progress.” He said this is his clear feeling from the trenches, not in the media yet.
He seems to believe the funding and etc. will dry up in the fall and troops begin to “redeploy” during the fall and spring.

A Drinking Liberally group meets in Greenville.
Mandrake, if you’re here – have you contacted your congressman, Bob Inglis?
TeddySanFran’s got a new thread.

Yo pun!
New revolutionary mantra…
…”The internet will not be televised!”
Absolutely nothing will change in September. The Dems have shown that their weak stereotype is actually true. Bush knows now that all he has to do is push a little bit and the Dems will crumble. I was thinking that the Repugs didn’t have a chance in ‘08. I have changed that opinion. This country really needs a viable third party.
JR
Oh, I understand now, Frank. Yes – you’re right. Judge Walton told Libby to let him know what needed to be redacted in his letters of support beyond the addresses and phone numbers. But, as with the letters themselves, that Libby submission today won’t be available via PACER, I’m pretty confident (or even in person at the courthouse). I assume Judge Walton and his staff will simply use that submission to decide on their own redactions prior to releasing the letters, starting tomorrow.

nice Salvadore Dali mustache!
mandrake, I’m not certain where in the US you are, but your local US Indymedia collective can help you find like-minded souls!
PS – I love Indymedia (IMC)- was there when the first Independent Media Center started in Seattle – they are now global.
Indymedia lets us post the news – and some is a bit wing-nuttish (but they do have mods). Still, valuable as a resource – just bring your critical thinking skills.

Did that, thanks.
What an inspiring thread!
Remember Bush, er, Butch and Sundance looking at the English tracker who just wouldn’t quit and saying, “Who ARE those guys?!” They wuz you.
Good news on Congressman Jefferson. The House feels cleaner already.
FYI, Frank @ 137, per 143 -
Just checked PACER. Nothing’s been filed on the Libby docket thus far today.
egregious, selise, bg, and Stephen: Thank you for the words of encouragement, you’re very kind!
And Stephen, I am in Greenville and I have contacted Bob a few times! We used to work at the same firm, actually. He’s an extremely pleasant guy on a personal level. I have to say that I was extremely shocked to read and also hear him talk about being suspicious of neocons. I have never heard any Republican Congressman mention the word “neocon:
I have heard about the Drinking Liberally – I just didn’t have anyone to go with and I’m a little tired of going to these things alone.
I am disappointed that no one has responded to my questions @ 61, not even to tell me what an idiot I am. Doesn’t anyone care about the permanent transformation of what used to be a world class democracy into a banana republic?
The occupation of Iraq is a temporary situation, like WWII, the Korean War, the War in Vietnam, Gulf War I, etc., it will end. The Unitary Executive could permanently transform our government into a run-of the mill show-democracy of Orwellian proportions. Permanently!!! I know that Christy often waxes eloquently about these things. I want to see a resurgence of the Constitutionalism that threw President Nixon out of office and restored the balance of powers.
Bob in HI
Loretta Sanchez no direct answer on impeachment viabilty as of last week.
DiFi a yes if impeachment moves forward.
Nancy P. no comment if (it’s) back on the table.
Time for another round of calls. Iraq and impeachment questions all the rage this summer. Keep pushing firepups. Booyah!

no.
it’s up to us.
Bob Schacht @ 153
i don’t think the occupation of iraq is a temporary thing.
unless we make it so.
war is used as a justification for the imperial presidency. the imperial presidency is used to start more wars.
the two are linked. imo, working on either is working on both.
Bob @ 61
They’d like having those powers, ‘just in case’.
Once any politician gets a little power, they don’t think it should be given up, for any reason.
And having power attracts more power.
(we are so scr*wed)
njprogressive @ 155
egregious directed me back to this comment – I am making a note of your e-mail address – thank you so much for your kindness and support!
Anyone in 47th district, Loretta Sanchez, for meeting schedule contact fhane.moore@mail.house.gov
For DiFi email scheduling request to elexis_wilson@feinstein.senate.gov
For Barbara Boxer FAX request to 415-956-6701.
For Nancy Pelosi leave schedule request on comment line at 202-225-0100.
sorry, for Loretta Sanchez it’s shane.moore@mail.house.gov

I was working in a Dr’s office in Kansas City, Mo. during this time and we had many patients affected by Courtney. It was a real creepy mess.
Petrocelli @ 59
thanks. for anyone who is interested, I put additional questions up at my place on the USA Scandal. To be delivered tomorrow.
I agree with JR, above. Urging support for Democratic candidates only BLEEDS OFF potential energy for change. I know you mean well, Christy, but things are different now.
Abandon the Democrats, and something new will emerge. There are tens of millions of us ready to support real progressive leadership.
I have to agree with JR and John H. We just had a Democratic debate in which none of the “front runners” were willing to come right out and say they would get us out of Iraq. 80% of the Democrats in the Senate just voted to give Bush everything he wants. The Democrats today are by any definition a pro-war party.
If we keep on with the “Democrats good, Republicans bad” approach, it will just continue to be a cover for Democrats to keep supporting the war. A strong third party challenge is the way to go.
If Clinton winds up being the Democratic nominee, the Democrats might very well finish third! I can’t see many people voting for her over good candidates from the Republicans and a truly progressive third party.
punaise @ 129
Huh, if they were truly revolting they’d be in the streets with the rest of us who aren’t in the streets. ;-)
“Get in touch with your representative and keep the pressure on.”
“I don’t have Congressional representation. I’m from DC.“
Just reminding folks, we do have a disenfranchised half million US citizens in this country.
I understand this is serious stuff discussed here, but come on. Is no one interested in where to find the cute little tortoise and hare? I’ve mended many a frazzled nerve by the fountain in Copley Square, Boston watching tourists take pictures of their kids on one or the other of them while waiting for a free organ concert to begin in Trinity Church.
One suggestion for Speaker Pelosi:
Offer a bill that will fully-fund the projected expense of redeploying our troops out of Iraq, but with no deadlines mentioned.
A rainy day redeployment fund. An “escrow” account in which money has been set aside for when the order is finally given to pull all of our troops out of Iraq.
Not tied to any day-to-day operational funding. To show our troops over in Iraq that Democrats have their backs covered. That more than enough funds stand ready to be tapped into to cover the cost of their hopefully safe and expedient departure from Iraq.
And after this troop “escrow” redeployment funding bill is offered for consideration and passage, then let’s see how Bush and the “rubber-stamp” Republicans respond.
It would be interesting to see how they’ll react to a bill that “supports the troops” by making certain that funds are available at some future unspecified date to pay for our troops’ extraction from the middle of a civil war waging in Iraq.
No strings attached. Just funding for this specific purpose only.
For Democrats: a win-win situation. While for the Republicans (and turncoats like Lieberman), anyone against such a simple “support the troops” measure will have to face an even more angry electorate.
