for the week ending 6/2/07:
AP (Washington, D.C.): The White House is reporting that Barney, the Scottish Terrier and confidante to President Bush, is resigning his post today. Citing family and financial reasons for his departure, Barney is looking to the private sector for a more financially rewarding career.
While Bush was unavailable for comment, White House spokeswoman Dana Perino read a statement from the President. "Laura and I are very sad to see Barney go; he's been a tremendous asset to this administration. We wish him the best of luck in his future endeavors."
Perino added: "Barney had been planning on spending more time with his family for some time."
NBC's David Gregory questioned whether the move was politically motivated by the latest revelations in the investigations into the U.S. Attorney firings or whether Barney had spent enough time hitting the tarmac in Waco. Ms. Perino dismissed such allegations.
"While I understand how much you'd love this to be a scandal, it shouldn't be construed as anything other than a personal choice by Barney to enter the next phase of his life at this juncture," she stated.
Others weren't so sanguine about the news. When asked a response to the imminent departure, Senator Patrick Leahy (D-VT) simply asked: "So, I guess that just leaves Laura, then?"

watertiger @ 4
Hell, one of the reasons I have a lot of clothes in my closet and dresser and a lot of extra towels and such is so I DON’T have to do laundry more than once every two or three weeks…
Bush is saying to Barney, “Look, I said ‘come’. I’m the fuc*ing presnit, and you do what I say.”
Get the subpoenas ready.
Can hardly wait for Toosday!!
Whuzzup wid dat?
Thanks Watertiger.
I checked out my own blog on the link you gave me.
What the fuck is going on in the comments?
Goddamn shame about Gilliard, what a terrific loss to all of us as his loyal readers — to say nothing of his friends and family.
Clusterfuck can’t threaten Barney- he knows too much!
Attaturk @ 13
*sigh* it’s just too sad.
that Barney!?! what a lil teaser he is.
i’ll miss his steady stream of enlightening pix.
live long & prosper in the private sector fella.
heaven knows you’ve earned it.
Bush promised to rebuild Lebanon does anyone know if even a dime has been spent there?
Barney know’s where all the poop is buried.
-GSD
What do you mean, leaves Laura? According to the Enquirer or Post or something like that, she has already moved out to a hotel!
Bush is really alone now. Laura’s staying at the Mayflower Hotel (so say the tabloids) and now you tell us Barney’s leaving??@?#?$?!! OMG, like Dubya has no one to play with.
Fabulous snark, as always, Watertiger!
Sandman @ 17
Well the US did just ship the Lebanese government several shiploads of weapons. Maybe they can make some sauce to go with the shells and serve them at a refugee camp.
-GSD
Listen, I’m calling for legislation mandating Americans watch a to be determined amount of CNN, Fox, and GE cable news each day in an effort to ensure successful conditioning for the proper interpretation of the next false flag terror event.
watertiger—
I’ll be happy to do your laundry for you. We live to serve.
Been thinkin more about Bush’s threat to fix it so that the next prez can’t back out of Iraq.
OK- here’s what he’s gonna do.
1) Agree to continue the surge for another year- and support the Iraqi army in fighting “Insurgents”.
2) Agree to provide training, armaments, and assistance in national defense for 20 years and sign a treaty to that effect.
3) Announce a change in US policy- after the final year- the US will retreat to it’s permanent bases and provide security against Iraq’s neghbors rather than support in the civil war. He will announce a gradual drawdown of troops to the 50,000 or so that will stay permanently.
4) Force the Iraqi govt to sign leases of oil fields with US firms- that way the US has somethin to protect in Iraq.
He announces this whole thing as “victory” and a withdrawal from a combat role for US forces.
The crowd goes WILD.
Clusterfuck gets what he wants- oil and bases. IF the Iraqi govt doesn’t go along- Clusterfuck will arrange for a new one that WILL go along- and without the complication of democracy…
Pretty sure that’s where this is headin. Clusterfuck figures it will take the wind out of the sails of the anti war movement and make 08 safe for gooper candidates.
He’s gotta be able that we got somethin out of this whole mess-
Attaturk @ 13
IsOught ought not.
Laura’s living at the Mayflower an bonin a dem who talks books and smokes grass with her. She’s never been happier.
Senator Patrick Leahy (D-VT) simply asked: “So, I guess that just leaves Laura, then?”
I think Barney’s departure just leaves Karl and Jeff Gannon.
Twins show up at the Mayflower with their dem boyfriends and everybody looks at pictures of JFK and weeps.
Barney got a job fighting global warming.
Barney will be peddling low flatulance cow chow.
After Clusterfuck announces his amazing victory in Iraq, gasoline prices will magically decline—for a short period- to underscore the significance of the victory……..Ticker tape victory parades- presidential speeches– why shoot- it’ll be one big ol party!
Barney’s lucky to exit such a dog-eats-dog world with his fur intact.

Linkies? What books?
There is another reason Barney is leaving. Domestic abuse.

I’m not sure if rwcole is joking around or not….either way, I think this IS the plan. The problem, if implemented? Mortars. Mortars every-day, all-the-way. Our troops better keep low.
Ghostman
Frank- they’ve been discussing “Career Options for Senior Librarians” by Dewey Decimal
Ghostman- no I wasn’t jokin- I think this is the plan.
Clusterfuck will call his new plan “Baker/Hamilton.”
The region is going to blow-up before Chimpy gets to set his framework of supposed accomplishment.

Well then, I think rwcole is snooping this one out very well.

‘Meet The Press” aired a brief interview with former GOP senator and “Law & Order” star Fred Thompson Sunday on his possible ‘08 run. Host Tim Russert added after the interview that Thompson was asked what he would do as president, and Thompson replied, “Lots of things.” Russert said that Thompson was asked whether he was prepared to elaborate on any of those things, and Thompson replied, “No.”
Seems as if Al Sadr is the most dangerous man in Iraq currently for GW Clusterfuck. He is very strong politically- and we have made an enemy of him. If Sistani decides it’s time- he will force us out of the country- and become an american hero as well as an Iraqi one.
Oklahoma kiddo @ 51
Well, you know how it is with actors – he misplaced his script with the GOP talking points.

Dana Perrino(dogchow)was asked how Barney’s past 6 years as GWB’s consultant has been?
“Ruff,” Barney replied.
Has GWB learned any new tricks?
“As seen in the photo, I’ve trained him to been over and reach for his ankles,” replied Barney. “The VP and I had a bet on who could get George to grab his ankles first. Dick won.”

P.S. Turkey reportedly shells PKK(Kurdish rebels/terrorists/freedom fighters) positions in Iraq
Oops- our bestest friends in the middle east- the Turks- who have allowed us to have bases there for decades- are shellin out newest bestest friends- the Kurds? Whoops—intergalctic thermonuclear war comin up!
Mrs. Thompson getting ready for a little comb-sucking lesson from The Master.

Yes- I didn’t mention the size of the twins- but by the way- are they identical or fraternal?
GSD
Yikes- she looks good fer a gooper.
rw—LOL
Yes you didn’t mention their size, I was just jumping in with an observation from someone who grew up in Mean Jean territory.
Yeah, Turkey is taking it from all sides. They are dealing with their own religuous issues and they’r etrying to get into the EU but the newest guy in the EU block, Sarkozy doesn’t want any “non-Europeans” messing up his beautiful EU.
The Turkish press(the media, not the coffeemaker) made quite the issue out of the recent US incursions into Turkish airspace(F-18’s from Iraq). The press thinks the US is trying to intimidate the Turks from attacking the Kurds( who the Turks call terrorists) and who the Turks say “can’t have any refuge in another country)….That all sounds familiar eh?

Gorbachev criticises US ‘empire’
The former Soviet leader, Mikhail Gorbachev, has blamed the US for the current state of relations between Russia and the West.

Putin, reacting to U.S., issues threat on Europe
He says U.S. defense plans will force Russia to target weapons on neighbors
“If the American nuclear potential grows in European territory, we have to give ourselves new targets in Europe,” Putin said, according to Corriere. “It is up to our military to define these targets, in addition to defining the choice between ballistic and cruise missiles.”
Russia has not overtly targeted Europe since agreeing after the fall of the Soviet Union not to direct missiles against specific countries, according to Pavel Felgenhauer, an independent military analyst based in Moscow.

Dang!
Everyone ready for Christy’s chat with Sam Seder? btw, from yesterday’s discussions with Rep. Admm Joe Sestak: let me get this straight, he says he wants a date certain of December for pullout of Iraq. We won’t know until September if we’re making “progress” (and we just know what that report is gonna say don’t we gang?), and they won’t get a chance to vote on a final Defense Authorization bill until mid-September at the earliest. That’s a 90 day window. Wasn’t the supplemental supposed to cover a 120-day window? So why wasn’t it enough time to get our troops out of harm’s way? And believe me, authorizations are optional — approps are must-pass. Remember the famous government shutdowns in 1995 and 1996? They were over approps, not authorization bills. Please. Just stop putzing around and get our troops out now!
Mrs. Giuliani and Mrs. Thompson. The escort twins.
Bush’s foreign policy treats everyone like children. Lots of tsking and scolding.
Russia and China are too grown-up for such crap and they are getting tired of it.
The US is grinding it’s military into the dirt while at the same time alienating most allies, aggravating and agitating sworn enemies and turning those who were once neutral about us whole-heartedly against us.
It seems to be working out quite well for the arms manufacturers.

Hi TiredFed!
Quite the steaming pile of non sequiturs the Admiral left us there.
Thanks for turning it over. Hope you had a long-handled rake.
That’s the irony of it. The child, George, treating everyone else like a child and so much chattel. You know what I mean, ‘turdblossom’?

ROFL – I’m in taking a coffee break from breaking up my driveway with a bobcat skid-steer and then smoothing it with one of those huge landscape rakes, and that metaphor struck me as more funny than it maybe is…
I think Mrs. Thompson needs a little more investigatin’. She seems to be a “K Street” groupie, and Fred worked as a lobbyist for 18 years. So this could be K Street’s chance to rule the country.
Jeri’s lobbying firm is one of the most powerful, and maybe it is the “good” guys of K Street?
kirk murphy @ 89
oops. sorry about that. hope the smell doesn’t offend. been covering AAU basketball and softball with my kids for a few days, so just going over past threads. that was a doozy! with Joe Wilson of all people. I’m still reading it, but I’m convinced that we are going to see endless reruns of “Dems arent supporting the troops.” They just have to buck up and do the right thing. too bad more will have to die before they can (I HOPE) muster the courage of their convictions and end this stupid occupation.
I think it’s time to bring back the ‘doctrine’ of mutually assured destruction. I believe it was George Bush Sr. who first advocated the idea that a nuclear war was ‘winnable’.

I continue to believe the Dems need to reframe the debate from “not supporting the troops” to “supporting the end of the occupation.” No funds should be appropriated for any other purpose. the language must be clear and unequivocal. It can be in authorization language or approps language, but it must be clear: no funds shall be used to continue the occupation of Iraq, e.g., “funds in this act shall be used only to redeploy troops out of Iraq,” with appropriate clauses to protect life and limb while departing. Purpose of approps is the strongest legal argument Congress can make, other than not giving the President the funding in the first place. Unfortunately, they have now given him a blank check for at least the next 8-9 months (the supplemental plus whatever he chooses to spend out of regular funds next year under a continuing resolution or regular approps bill). That was a huge tactical mistake and will land this debate squarely in the middle of a Presidential election (the original quagmire).

Do it!! Need volunteers!
I was able to, and VERY late, post a comment this morning to the discussion with Mr. Sestak. (I think I wound up being the last comment)
Anyways, for me, the critical question, absent all the politics and so forth, is: how long would it take to SAFELY redeploy some 140,000 US combat troops out of Iraq? I think this answer then defines the best type of legislative proposal….and illuminates what proposal is not so good.
