no methodist i know-and i was raised methodist, would ever condone anti-gay anything. i would like to point out that he was overruled by the church in his views…………

You know, I live in Ohio. Sort of a semi-rural area. Big fundie area. BUT:
My 16-year-old son got invited to the prom by an older girl, and while we were getting his tux rented (last minute, of course) he told me about his friend who was also getting a tux. His friend Kathy. Her girlfriend, her date for the prom, was going and they both didn’t want to wear gowns. So this is very out in the open, they go and are announced as they enter the prom, they have photos taken and everything. I was really happy about this.
Boy have things changed since I was in high school circa 1970.
I must say though, that if this were at a high school only a few miles from here, it would be very different, from what I’ve heard. Class, race and income levels are low in this town, this is the town high school, and the ones a bit further out are more upscale. And more fundie, racist, classist, etc.

First is defunding the occupation of Iraq. I think getting Senators to co-sponsor Chris Dodd’s Defense Authorization Amendment is a great start, and we need to press Democratic and GOP Senators on that.

#2 is investigating ALL the damage BushCo has done to the Federal government: DoJ, Interior, Agriculture, etc, all the departments. Locate and identify all the little Monica Goodlings and root them out.

#3 is identifying and supporting progressive, people-powered candidates for Congress in 2008. We’ve learned from our disenchantments this year that OUR party needs rescuing from corporatist, occupationist Beltway Dems.

What are your priorities, dmac?

FWIW, I say the #1 issue is insuring that our elections are honest.

It seems ridiculous to need to say it, but: Senators, we don’t want a Surgeon General who says gays can pray it away. We’d like a 21st century doctor, if BushCo could find us one who doesn’t kill cats and misdiagnose comatose women from a distance. Please.

Gosh, that’s such a huge question.

Many chemicals are associated with increased incidence of learning disorder.

Autism and “learning disorder” are – formally – dissimilar diagnostic groups.

In practice, (oh dear) “autistic spectrum disorder” is a diagnostic concept that includes some “learning disorders”.

[All these diagnoses come from DSM-IV TR. Non-psychiatrists and/or non-physicians sometimes confuse the verbal pictures constructed by DSM committees with biological reality.

As the DSM-IV diagnoses rely on phenomenological criteria (stuff ya can see) whenever possible, the DSM diagnostic categories don’t translate into specific etiologies (disease causes) for most of the diagnoses.

UCLA has a really great scientifically based Child and Adolescent Psych service (if you’re in the region – or can travel there – and need help, they are superb for diagnoses and current effective treatment.)

Some clinicians I knew from there described their sense that some milder forms of “autism” seem to blend into “learning disorder” without clear biological demarcation.

As the role of synthetic chemicals in learning disorder is incontrovertible (some – especially organophosphate pesticides – clearly cause it), and the incidence of synthetic chemical use, learning disorders, and autism have risen together, the precautionary principle would suggest treating chemicals known to cause learning disorders as potential causes of other neurobehavioral diagnoses.

That said, I’m not able to find specific info re autism and glyphosate.

Your question is most reasonable: neural development (embryonic/fetal) is governed by interactions and signals among a whole range of hormones. To make matters more complicated, everything is on a timeline – if a signal is missed or goes awry, that step in the plans can simply be left “missed” or “mis-wired”.

In fancy medical lingo, the “hormone sytem” is the “endocrine sytems”.

The fancy medical term for chemicals that screw up our bodies’ own hormones is “endocrine disruptor.”

The new study I mentioned shows Round-up is an endocrine disruptor.

The new info about Round-up’s toxic effect on cellular estrogen levels during the baby’s earliest development suggest a very real mechanism by which Round-up could cause learning disorders. The possiblity, however, would require very extensive testing in the US system.

The EU has just adopted the precautionary principle; the precautionary principle leads us to regard all “endocrine disruptors” as potential causes of abnormal brain development – they share the same basic biological mechanism.

In the US, we do body counts (or diploma counts, for learning disorders).

First the chemical is released and harms us. Then we spend decades figuring this out and getting it banned.

Chemicals have rights, you know.

Unlike humans.

We have to die (usually lots of us) before some synthetic molecule loses its freedom and is pensioned off in a flask somewhere.

You know, I live in Ohio. Sort of a semi-rural area. Big fundie area. BUT:
My 16-year-old son got invited to the prom by an older girl, and while we were getting his tux rented (last minute, of course) he told me about his friend who was also getting a tux. His friend Kathy. Her girlfriend, her date for the prom, was going and they both didn’t want to wear gowns. So this is very out in the open, they go and are announced as they enter the prom, they have photos taken and everything. I was really happy about this.
Boy have things changed since I was in high school circa 1970.
I must say though, that if this were at a high school only a few miles from here, it would be very different, from what I’ve heard. Class, race and income levels are low in this town, this is the town high school, and the ones a bit further out are more upscale. And more fundie, racist, classist, etc.

Nashville actually has an ALTERNATIVE prom. Every year they attract more kids, and some come from as far away as Knoxville to attend! It’s open to GLBT kids and their friends who want to show support.

Oh no, not another cartoon character! I suggest the proper tone to take at his confirmation hearing is one of mockery and total contempt, expressed with smirks and laughter. The only way to deal with these guys is mockery.

Should congress descend to that?. The nomination itself is mockery so fight fire with fire.

And stop using the words ‘the president’ Use commander guy or decider or dear leader. If the last one is too subtle perhaps little puke would do.

At the confirmation hearing dems should ask not one question. Just get the vote over with.

i would like to defend the methodist church

no methodist i know-and i was raised methodist, would ever condone anti-gay anything. i would like to point out that he was overruled by the church in his views…………

and teddy- no amount of prayin’ on his part will ever bring support to his way of thinking……….life still goes on, and more people every day are looking at gays as fulfilled human beings, as we speak it is happening, and that is the powerful thing that will continue to create change, not the backward thinking, gay stifling thinking that the bush administration tries to teach to it’s ‘peepholes’ (peoples-but they like peepholes, perverts)……..

i wish to remind people how it was in the 70’s-my dad had gay friends, we went to dinner at their house regularly, was normal to me…but out in public then?????? no way……they never went out…….my step-brother and sister are both gay, with the same partners since the early 80’s and two of my best friends in high school were gay and lesbian, BEFORE it was ok….times were VERY HARD FOR THEM back then……..times have changed in a large way since then, and are still changing, don’t let this surgeon general thing make you think anything else…….people are evolving toward the good in a person by person movement, let that make you feel comforted. once you know someone who is gay it is the same as having a relative, and you defend them……that is happening all over america…….defending gay rights…….i remember the marches where noone showed up………now you can say you are gay at a party……never would have happened back then………women’s rights took a long time, too………rambling, sorry, just don’t want you to discount how equal you finally are, thanks to people that i have known who stood up way before it was popular. continue their efforts by being happy and meeting people and letting them see what a wonderful thinking compassionate human being you are, that’s what makes people change.

I was raised Methodist and I know some Methodists who would (including my dear father), but they’re mostly older people, and their numbers are few.
You will note that the Methodists asked them to leave. That should tell you a lot.

dmac, I appreciate your defense of the methodist church, but my post requires no one to defend the church. In fact, I point out that Dr. Holsinger and his wife were asked to leave their UMC congregation in order to launch their new church, with its odd views.

You know, I live in Ohio. Sort of a semi-rural area. Big fundie area. BUT:
My 16-year-old son got invited to the prom by an older girl, and while we were getting his tux rented (last minute, of course) he told me about his friend who was also getting a tux. His friend Kathy. Her girlfriend, her date for the prom, was going and they both didn’t want to wear gowns. So this is very out in the open, they go and are announced as they enter the prom, they have photos taken and everything. I was really happy about this.
Boy have things changed since I was in high school circa 1970.
I must say though, that if this were at a high school only a few miles from here, it would be very different, from what I’ve heard. Class, race and income levels are low in this town, this is the town high school, and the ones a bit further out are more upscale. And more fundie, racist, classist, etc.

Nashville actually has an ALTERNATIVE prom. Every year they attract more kids, and some come from as far away as Knoxville to attend! It’s open to GLBT kids and their friends who want to show support.
