In the May 29th issue of the Washington Post, there was a chilling article by Manuel Roig-Franzia concerning the fact that drug cartels and corruption and violence — a violence that has increased sharply in the year since the controversial and bitterly contested election wherein Felipe Calderon wound up running the country — has made Mexico second only to Iraq as a death trap for serious journalists.
But as frightening as that article was, it paled next to the contents of the comments section.
Here's a representative sample of the commentary left by Nice Polite White People (all taken without editing from me):

To all these charming wingnuts and more, I address the following comments:
If you smoke dope, shop at Wal-Mart for food and other goods, and hate unions, then shut the hell up. You have no right to blame Mexicans for anything.
Worried about losing American jobs and family farms? Then why do you shop at Wal-Mart? Whether it's food or furniture, they pride themselves on getting it from places outside the US for near-slave wages.
Want better wages for all? Then back unions — and the right for all employees, Caucasians or not, to report employers who exploit people for crummy wages and in rotten working conditions. The old saying "An injury to one is an injury to all" is especially true when greedy corporations seek to play workers around the world against each other.
Wish Mexico's drug lords would go away? Don't buy their wares. (Or work to legalize drugs — then you can grow the stuff here and eliminate the middle man, and we could empty out and shut down half of our prisons.)
Ah, but it's much more fun ragging on those evil brown people, isn't it?
Sigh.

Me, I’m enammelled to spelling, but that’s just me.
A point of disagreement with an otherwise excellent piece:
“If you smoke dope, shop at Wal-Mart for food and other goods, and hate unions, then shut the hell up. You have no right to blame Mexicans for anything. “
My dope doesn’t have a damn thing to do with Mexico, but is a product of the USA. :)
Yeah zed.
Rats!
As with everything else the wingnut mind touches, there is a complete disconnect between reality and their fantasies.
Those dirty steenking whatevers pick their avacados, clean their hotel rooms, landscape their lawns, and wash their dishes. They also have a tendency to work very hard and keep close family ties.
This is the issue that brings into clear relief the chasm between the values republicans and the money republicans. The money republicans very much want to keep Mexican workers here, because of the economic value they provide. The values republicans just hate brown (or black, or yellow, or any other) people.
As with the abortion issue, as Molly Ivins once said, the two groups loathe each other. Let the battle begin!
OT, but another Sign of the Times. The joke of the day from Comedy Central’s website…
Q: How many US Attorney Generals does it take to screw in a light bulb?
A: I cannot recall that particular answer at this time.
The Internet is like one of those colored filters that you use to read a secret message on a magazine page. The picture seems normal and reasonable till you read the blogs, and suddenly you realize what fear and violence lurks just below the surface…
Terrifyingly, these are the people whose philosophies and leaders are already in power: what will they do to retain that power I wonder?
Phoenix Woman!
I try to avoid shopping at Wal-Mart if I can. It’s only a last resort/emergency situation when I have checked Target, K-Mart, Sears, Dollar General and everyone else and I need the product TODAY and can’t wait for an on-line order to be shipped.
Thankfully those times are extremely rare.
And I love how the righties whine when their patriotism is impugned by the President! Walk a mile in Nancy Pelosi’s shoes, or Cindy Sheehan’s, or Russ Feingold’s — or Jim Webb’s son’s combat boots.
This is how it feels, suckers, when you disagree with your President — he calls you unpatriotic, claims you haven’t read the bill, and charges you with political theatrics. Doesn’t feel so good, does it?
John Stewart Mill has a most interesting essay inwhich he discusses the value and assesment of opinion. It should be revisited.
Ok, I’m trying to parse “enammelled to cocaine and Meth.”
I haven’t a clue what this person was trying to say.

I read it as “enamoured of”

“Nuke the Liberal Fascist MSM too!” from the comments…
A lot of construction workers, both structures and pipelines, are ‘brown’ (and probably legal). Also: the people emptying their trash bins, the people sweeping their streets, and quite possibly the people installing the cable TV connection so they can watch Faux News.
Brisingamen @ 11
Must have meant enamoured of “cocaine and meth”
You know, maybe what we need is a Federal Living Wage — say employers can’t pay workers less than $15 dollars an hour?

and that’s the unvarnished truth.
Some of the Right Wing/Conservative/Republican websites I look at commonly have much worse, completely blatantly openly hateful, (sickening) comments about Mexicans.
I recently did some work on a luxury housing development made up of 52 $1.2 – $2 million homes. I estimated that if all the work was done “properly” paying legal workers a living wage, paying all taxes, retirement, and HEALTH CARE and some vacation pay, each house would have cost 2-3 times as much.
(I think I’ve heard that very little pot comes from Mexico nowadays.)
Peterr @ 20
Good one!
The blatant racism is very disturbing but the giant wage disparity in the country is a big part of the problem. I am one of the really lucky ones with a good satisfying job and partnered with someone in a good satisfying job. I can’t disregard the real fear this issue creates for those less lucky.
oh dear – that old bat Phyllis Schafly is on CNBC prattling on about the Atlanta lawyer with a viral strain of TB – is there no end to this dreadful homophobics know it all-ness?

Kirk Murphy,

The Repugs and their enablers created this atmosphere of hate and then are surprised when it turns on them….

Ya and Old JD Hayworth now has his own avenue to spread his version of hate and lies….. KFYI from 4-7pm… wow, drive time slot! Now isn’t he coming up in the world!

I don’t know how you can stand it.
I swear the mentality of a ten year old is afflicted to these idiots.
Bad grammar, worse spelling, you can just see the spittle flying out of their mouths.
Gruesome.
In the end it’s unfettered fre market capitalism’s greed which is the cause of almost all misery for the people… that is the one’s who don’t earn shares and make money from them.
Greed for profits and the bottom line to feed shareholders and pay top management makes corporations act with no concern for anything but profit.
The repugs have (with many dems support) freeed corporations to “do their thing” because they think “what’s good for corporations… is good for america.” But how how wrong they are. This love of profits has destroyed us… taken us to a war (many of them actually) and addicted us to consumerism.
Money and corporations and their lobbyists run this country for THEIR benefit… not for the poeple. It’s time for a real regime change and a revolution. This system is so broke it can’t be tweaked any more. But it is headed for a self destruct and it will take all the people into a very painful place.
You’ve been warned.
Way OT, but my enammmelled brain can’t figure this out:
Update: Josh Marshall says Thompson was not being paid to defend Scooter. He’s evidently trying to ride in on a white horse and tie himself to as many BushCo. scandals as possible. Shrewd.
How is this a smart strategy? I’m not getting it…
Great post PW, thanks.
Minus the drugs, it sounds very reminiscent of US History wrt Lincoln County War (Billy the Kid) and the Johnson County War. These were post Civil War conflicts that showed the wisdom of the Posse Comitatus Act.
actually, this reminds me of one of my virtual zoo of pet peeves…..which is how the f**k do the repubs manage to con poor and hard working people into consistently voting against their economic interest??
SanderO, we can’t get traction on legitimate campaign finance reform. I don’t think socialism is a winning platform.
The laws of supply and demand are like gravity. They apply whether you believe in them or not.
BushCo has put government up for sale, that’s not a topic about which reasonable people disagree. Socialism works very well with volunteers, religious communities for example. I haven’t seen it work, however, in a nation state. I think we would agree that if we don’t reclaim the government’s autonomy from the control of certain oligopolies, we have very serious problems.
randiego @ 47
I read that, too. I think Josh was being snarkastic.

I thought it highly amusing that the contestants at the Scripps Spelling Bee were given the grand opportunity to visit the White House prior to the Bee. But did they meet with the Spelre in Cheef? No, it was Librarian Laura instead…such a disappointment. Would have loved to see him make an arse of himself in front of those talented and intelligent young people, just for kicks.
Albatross @ 14
Yes, its easy to pick the low-hanging fruit and paint all righty blogs as intemperate, bile-filled brainless nattering– But couldn’t they do the same about lefty blogs? After all, there are some folks here who feel quite justified to heave potty-mouthed diatribes at the wingnuts, as if to say, its OK if *we* do it.
Of course, there is a lot more here than potty-mouthed diatribes: FDL, TPMuckracker and others have established themselves as sources of news and penetrating insight.
For a better comparison, we should be looking at Powerline, with main writers John Hinderaker, Scott Johnson, and Paul Mirengoff. These are the dudes who, with help from their readers, smoked Dan Rather’s bogus records of Bush’s military “service” with the Texas National Guard within 24 hours after the report was aired on Sixty Minutes, in their famous “Sixty-First Minute” blog on Sept. 9, 2004.
What always got my goat was that the substance of Rather’s allegations was never questioned. They were able, however, to show that the documents Rather was relying on must have been forgeries. Their format was a little different back then: readers could write to the author of the thread, but only the author could see the comments. If he thought there was something of substance, he could add it in an “update” to the original diary– something like what Glenn Greenwald does now. The original article on the Sixty-First Minute went through 13 updates before closing the thread, which was then continued in a series of separate articles throughout the month on Powerline. And as a result, Dan Rather lost his job. Later that same month, Sept. 30, 2004, they live-blogged the Kerry-Bush televised debate, providing some instant analysis– anticipating FDL’s more important live-blog of the Libby trial.
The Sixty-First Minute blog alone should have been a wake-up call to the MSM, but alas, no one woke up– at least, not in the MSM editorial offices.
If we really want to establish ourselves, we need to be comparing what we do to the best conservative blogs, not the worst ones.

Two thoughts, one nice, one not so nice.
First of all, a big reason that every day, law abiding Mexicans are coming here in droves is the very reason that the bigots are using in their hateful diatribes – the Mexican government is hopelessly corrupt and the society is sinking further into violence. Do you think the violent ones want to come here where they have to behave and we actually have cops who do their jobs? NO!
My second impulse is to ship all these wingnuts off to Mexico. There are fewer of them out there than undocumented workers so it would be easier, and they’d be left to cower in some stank hotel somewhere because when faced with the object of their hatred they inevitably are cowards. Those true lunatics who like to have street fights after a night out drinking can just fight it out with the cartels and wife beaters that our newly undocumented workers are escaping. Let them all sink into one big hellhole.
Ed*ard Teller @ 28
Hi ET – I’m back!
SanderO @ 46
You are right-on about that. I’ve asked before, “What is the premise of capitalism?” The second question is, “How do capitalists make money?” Any good capitalist will tell you, “On other people’s labor.” If you have a good job you still work for the man and he decides when you are expendable.

Bob in HI, have you checked what ‘the best in conservative blogs’ has been up to, lately?
P.S. Late edit, just wanted to credit Leonard Pierce with the “Over at Butt Propulsion Laboratories” phrase. :-)
yeah, everybody knows that your average Mexican is so flush with cash that they buy immense amounts of cocaine.
It’s probably why so many get caught crossing the border: too engrossed in deep conversations, makin’ a little too much noise.
Capitalism can work if it is regulated and measures are in place to prevent all the capital to end up in the bank accounts of a very few who in capitalism now personally have more wealth than nations.
The tax system can be used to prevent this, but the repukes are for no taxes because they want to keep it all and they don’t need government… it only interferes in their making and keeping their wealth.
If you don’t regulate capitalism it runs away, makes a few wealth, the many miserable and will collapse because it is built on many lies… like the fractional lending of banks.
Sorry for the OT. But evidently there have been several requests for an explaination of how the sentencing hearing before Walton might go.
I left a description at the bottom of the last thread.

You want to destroy the drug cartels?
It’s easy, LEAGALIZE DRUGS!!!
Well pot anyway.
Drugs are like terror, just a concept to demonize to support spending billions of taxpayers dollars on a war that will never end.
Well I skipped over all the other comments and this may be EPU’ed but I had to say it.
STOP the War on Drugs.
All these wars are about maintaining a large security state apparatus which intimidates people to fear the “state” and its power.
SanderO @ 65
I’ve said before deregulation is another word for lawlessness. Let’s deregulate driving. Each of us will regulate ourselves and drive to the nearest Highway Patrol to report that we exceeded the speed limit and we are there to collect our moving violation. The same people running deregulated companies are also on the highway so their ethics and honesty should translate. Human nature is what it is and it is no different for a capitalist.
I say it’d be a challenge. What cities are the “lefty blogs” suggesting we nuke?
Wow, so, wait, you’re telling me that the Right Wing has a powerful juggernaut of a propaganda machine, built up over thirty years through corporate donations and funds from Scaife, that makes the feeble efforts of the Left look like the little “Bang” flag that pops out of Wile E. Coyote’s pistol?
Why, I never noticed that. Huh. Amazing.
Call me crazy, but I’ve always assumed the reason the ‘brilliant’ Powerline guys were so quick to identify the Dan Rather documents as fake was because the fake documents had been provided to him by the Right Wing itself in order to discredit Rather. I’m sure they were delighted when he took their bait.
I’m sure the Left might have done as well had they the funds and resources behind them that the propanda marketing firms or “think tanks” provide the Right. Then there’s the matter of gaining access to media events at all…
Please. As if the mainstream media is neutral. The mainstream media is (with a dwindling few exceptions) PART of the Right, complicit with its propaganda goals. Until the Left either a) attracts equivalent $billions, or b) somehow excises corporate influence from our goverment through campaign finance reform, I don’t see the Left gaining an effective voice in American mainstream news and editorial media.
Maybe we could stop slapping each other down over petty differences of opinion, too. ‘Cause the Right does that lockstep thing so well, you know.
QuakerGirl @ 69
SanderO @ 65
Yes, I agree 100%.
Other thing is that very few industries exist in a state of capitalism. The blogs are an exception. Oligarchies rule and the law has to catch up.
PW, it’s all out of control, and it’s this way because OUR government sanctions illegal immigration to create lower wages.
Our government, long before our involvement in SE Asia, has ALWAYS enabled the infusion of drugs from foreign country’s, as a means of medicating and numbing our populous.
Iran/Contra alone set back the evolution of the Black Race when Ricky Freeway Flyer intro’d cheap crack to Watts, LA . . .
To this day, the stats I read suggest that the middle and lower class WHITE people are the reason drugs are so coveted to smuggle in and MAKE (meth comes from my Central Valley in CA and is made by both Hispanics and whites).
So WHITE’S are the reason BROWNS are profiteering.
History proves it. Wave, after wave. Drug after drug.
The fact of the matter is, OUR OWN SOCIETY AND ITS ELECTED LEADERS are destroying the middle class thru the importation of illegal immigrants and the drugs brought in with and without them.
You can’t get all sanctimonious about that shit, it’s real.
I’m not for white bred supremist insanity, but, you can’t ignore the fact that we DO have a HUGE problem, and until you wanna pick yer own fruit and veggies, this problem will continue as drugs and violence are easily enabled to enter our country under the umbrella of a cheap work force.
N that’s a matter of elected officials and legislated policies, and the turning of heads who PROFIT one way or another from cheap illegal labor, and get their hands greased to look the other way as drugs follow.
Time to seal the borders, and time to END our global interventionism, and rebuild from within.
OR die a painful death like Rome did.
Fact of the matter is, Mexico IS a huge threat to this country and if it’s not dealt with, it will drag us down further into the corruption and old class rich families that rule it, and have ruined it by destroying it.
Course, we’re doing that to ourselves pretty well, anyways, without Mexico’s help, so maybe they DON’T matter . . . .
Our country is broke, badly, and it’s a corrupt as a third world country and as fractured as the USSR was upon breakup.
Only will take a few little steps to set us on the road to fractured and splintered groups.
It’s time to acknowledge, we are broke top to bottom, and illegal immigration and drugs and violence are part and parcel of the problem that needs to be fixed.
America First. Infrastructure First. US CITIZENS FIRST! Time to take care of our own, be they black, white, brown, yellow or green . . . . and then think about how to help the rest of the world when we get our house in order.
Harumph.
Close the borders. Stop the interventionism. Bring the troops home. Rebuild internally.
No one’s invading us or coming after us, we got nukes. The little terrorist bullshits can’t hurt us in a large enuff scale . . . we get out of THEIR issues, and we won’t be as much of a target as we are, thanks to ShrubCo and the neocon fools who CREATED THIS SHITMIRE and made US a target for the whole world.
Let’s make sure we are putting the blame SMACK DAB SQUARE on the butts that created our lot in life.
N let’s start to reform our country and government from top to bottom for the masses, not the few.
Harumph.
Brisingamen @ 17
See now, THAT would get a lot of folks inspired to work. Do that, and INSIST that there’s NO money given for welfare or anything else without proven and gainful labor.
Couple that with educational opportunities for folks who DO participate in state sponsored support mechanisms (WORK PROJECTS!) and you’d have an INSTANT phreakin trending to the rebuilding of the country, and a sense of pride and a sense of YOU BETTER WORK FOR YER BREAD!
I guess I’m talkin about some mandatory community service for people who can’t afford education, health CARE (not COVERAGE) services, and such.
Still have to close the border, we got too many not working in this country, and until THAT fat is trimmed from our budgets, we got no room to absorb newbies.
SanderO @ 46

Is it ok to comment on illegal elections in Mexico? The same people who work so hard to make sure our 49-51 is always republican works to keep the cheap labor coming up from the south. The reason Mexico protested and protested over the last election was our intervention. The loser..Obrador wanted good wages, benefits and was pro business too. That would have done a lot to keep the Mexicans in Mexico. WE were against Obrador because he was a lefty. Kinda’ like Chavez. If you aren’t a cut throat fascist you can’t be US approved.

I’d like to ask Isang011 if he was paying attention at all? The story said it was the second deadliest country for journalists. Reporters in Mexico have had a miserable time for decades when it comes to being able to report the news freely. Don’tcha just love when people leave out vital words that give context to the story. Please, Isang. Go back to school. Learn how to read for content and write clearly. While you’re at it, why not take a look at the violence here in the US whether or not fueled by drugs. :::sniff:::
