Wake Up Little Suzie and Dream were my favorite Everly Bros tunes. They were pioneers no doubt about it. That harmony - listen to old Bill Monroe and Ralph Stanley tunes and you will hear where the harmony came from - referred to as that “high lonesome sound”. I listened to the Everly Brothers when they were popular (I was born in 1952) and then again with my daughter born in 1982. We had Gene Pitney, Everly Brothers, Hank Williams, Patsy Cline tapes interspersed with radio pop music from the 1980s, 90s and 2000s as our eclectic mix riding in the car together for many miles over the years.

Underrated for sure.

They had it all. Harmony, muscianship, clever lyrics. They were the first, that I’m aware of, to introduce different tempi in one song.

Sorry, it’s “Wake Up, Little Susie” that was their iconic song, and yet another in the long history of a song starting where you thought the kids had done something bad — like, you know, sex — and it turns out they had just fallen asleep, so they’re good kids but they have to explain it to their parents. And kids are so misunderstood!!!

That was the big hit at the parties in people’s basements about 120 years ago, when you’d sneak a little rum in that coke and get that hand a little closer to where it wasn’t supposed to be. And then, for the last, close dance, there would be “Dream,” also by the Everlys.

And kids, don’t judge them on this reedy little sound over GooTube.

Absolutely “vastly underrated rock-and roll-pioneers”!

Memories of harmonizng with Joe Graves in high school chem lab back in the late ’50s. The Everly Brothers dominate the sound track of my adolescence

Thanks, Marion. I’m feeling well enough that some solid food — maybe one of those chewy bagels — sounds pretty good. Good luck on your next surgery.

Retirin’, congratulations on being suture-free. My guy says I’m healing nicely and we’ve got the bottom half planned for July, on Friday the 13th. At least his name isn’t Freddy! It would seem that your surgery was more involved than mine, because my stitches were out in 10 days. Glad you’re doing well.

Good morning, pups. It’s raining! It’s raining!! It’s finally raining!!! Everly Brothers? Vastly underrated. The NYT today has guest columnist Timothy Egan on the Gates Foundation and what it needs to learn about making American politicians pay attention, and Bob Herbert has more horror stories about the NYC cops in the classroom. They’ll curl your hair…

http://mgpaquin.wordpress.com/

Coffee and tea are ready, and so is a selection of bagels with cream cheese and lox. They’re already split, and the toaster is waiting. Have a wonderful day — I know my garden will!

Good morning everyone…it is a dark and stormy one here in the upper Midwest. We could use the rain, so I won’t whine too much.
