The Republican noise machine has taken a beating on one of their favorite talking points: “There was no real crime, because Valerie Plame wasn’t a real spy.” (See Glenn Greenwald’s entry for 5/30.)

Now they want to go ’round on another of their favorites: “Valerie sent Joe on a junket to Niger.” This 5/29 USA Today article quotes Senator Kit Bond (R-MO):

Here are Plame’s three versions of how Wilson was sent to Niger, Bond said:

•She told the CIA’s inspector general in 2003 or 2004 that she had suggested Wilson.

•Plame told Senate Intelligence Committee staffers in 2004 that she couldn’t remember whether she had suggested Wilson.

•She told the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee in March that an unidentified person in Vice President Cheney’s office asked a CIA colleague about the African uranium report in February 2002. A third officer, overhearing Plame and the colleague discussing this, suggested, “Well, why don’t we send Joe?” Plame told the committee.

CIA officials have been unable to verify Plame’s March version, Bond said. Paul Gimigliano, a CIA spokesman, said the “public record on the matter is extensive, and, at this point, I can’t add anything to it.”

Hopefully, this will develop into an equally entertaining melee

Hey, here’s an idea…since Morning Joe talks out of both sides of his mouth, lamenting the divisiveness while taking shots at “leftwing bloggers”…

In the spirit of open conversation, how about inviting, oh, say, Christy or Jane to appear on your program???????????

Afraid to expose your own “bread and circus,” Joe?

Waccamaw @ 156

On a lighter note………

There’s a tall ship docked an hour’s drive away that’s setting sail again tomorrow. I’ve wanted to see one of these for more than 30 years, ever since they sailed into NY harbor in 1976. Has anyone else ever seen one and is it worth the gas to go have a looksee?

I saw them in Grand Haven, Michigan about 10 years ago. I’d easily drive an hour especially if you get to see it under sail.

I must go down to the seas again, to the lonely sea and the sky,
And all I ask is a tall ship and a star to steer her by;
And the wheel’s kick and the wind’s song and the white sail’s shaking,
And a gray mist on the sea’s face, and a gray dawn breaking.

I must go down to the seas again, for the call of the running tide
Is a wild call and a clear call that may not be denied;
And all I ask is a windy day with the white clouds flying,
And the flung spray and the blown spume, and the sea-gulls crying.

I must go down to the seas again, to the vagrant gypsy life,
To the gull’s way and the whale’s way, where the wind’s like
a whetted knife;
And all I ask is a merry yarn from a laughing fellow-rover,
And quiet sleep and a sweet dream when the long trick’s over.

Give Joe Klein an over-all plus on Scarborough this morning. A reality check about the politicization by Bush of Iraq.

Scarborough defending Bush–every body supported going to war. Hey, Joe. WE WERE LIED TO. Oh, and I didn’t support attacking Iraq. A lot of Americans didn’t support attacking Iraq.

And don’t attack Clinton for epitomizing “moral relativism.” Not when your crowd’s got Newtie and the choirgirl. Or Hot Tub Delay.

And another false choice by Scarborough: John Wayne vs. Jane Fonda epitomizes the era.

Nope, Joe. John Wayne [sunsets in the East] vs. Gregory Peck [Mockingbird].

Do what is right because it is right. And don’t lie to us. You’re entitled to your own opinion, Joe. Not your own “reality.”
