Disjointed observations from a disordered mind on current events, passing on stuff (most of it good) you're not likely to see on the evening news:
– Criminy! First Lou Dobbs comes out in favor of a higher minimum wage. Now the Wall Street Journal (though not its editorial staff) have run an article (subscription only, natch) on – wait for it – the rise in income inequality worldwide, including here in the US of A. (Here's a nifty chart depicting all of this.) Who do they think they are, John Maynard Keynes? Next thing you know they'll be admitting that Bush's massive 2003 tax cuts were a bad idea.
– TPM's Steve Benen points out that there have been amazing about-faces in certain aspects of Bush foreign policy recently:
… Dems said Bush should talk directly to Syria; Bush said Dems were weak to even suggest it; and Bush eventually came around. Dems said Bush should talk to North Korea and use Clinton's Agreed Framework as a model for negotiations; Bush said this was out of the question; and Bush eventually came around. Dems said Bush should increase the size of the U.S. military; Bush said this was unnecessary; and Bush eventually came around.
And Dems said Bush should engage Iran in direct talks, particularly on Iraq. It took a while, but the president came around on this, too.
For years, all we've heard from the right is that Bush is a bold visionary when it comes to foreign policy, and Dems are weak and clueless. And yet, here we are, watching the White House embrace the Dems' approach on most of the nation's major foreign policy challenges.
Now, if Bush could just bring himself to accept the Democratic line on Iraq, too, we'd really see some progress.
– Dean Baker over at TAP's Beat the Press column demonstrates that at least one member of the editorial staff of the New York Times is a very silly person:
In an editorial calling for companies to voluntarily allow non-binding shareholder votes on CEO compensation packages, the NYT warns that if companies don't allow such votes Congress may force them. It then adds that Congress "is not the place to set corporate salaries."
Of course no one is proposing that Congress would set CEO salaries. Congress is debating a change in the rules under which CEO salaries are set, and in fact Congress is the place that such rules are set. (Sorry NYT editorial writers, they weren't handed down by God.)

Hi there Phoenix Woman!
Happy Memorial Day!
Here’s another interesting tidbit:
Sad Memorial Day too.
TexBetsy @ 4
I have that video TB, and I was so happy that Robert Greenwald joined Jane’s Book Salon yesterday. It was smokin’!
That’s consistent for Lou. He is a populist through and through.
Your point on rising inequality is well taken but I do think it’s important to clarify that linked chart a little. It may be somewhat deceptive, because as per capita income increases quickly in fast-developing countries (eg., China), inequality inevitably increases as well. The typical development path (predicted by Keynes and so many others) sees everybody’s income going up, but the richest getting richer faster than the poorest. This continues, in theory, until an inflexion point, after which, with increased state welfare and infrastructure spending which a wealthier country can support, the cap slowly begins to close. I’m not saying this theory is necessarily correct or this inflexion point necessarily occurs, but, in the fast-developing economy case (China, Singapore, Botswana, India, etc), one has to bear in mind that everybody’s real income is going up despite the increasing gini coefficient.
Problems only emerge when structural issues prevent the inflection point from occuring after growth begins to slow.. and eventually stagnates (possibly the Mexican problem for several points in their history).
Of course, this latter may in fact come to the scenario in the US, and, as a developed country, the gini coefficient should not still be increasing, but the same argument and conclusion vis-a-vis globalization cannot be (mathematically speaking) correctly applied to the NIE (say, Chinese) situation).
…sorry to play the math guy here, but I think it’s important to put these stats in context.
TexBetsy @ 4
Ah, Brasscheck — they must be fans of my old friend Upton Sinclair, as he wrote a book called The Brass Check which is a stinging indictment of early 20th century American journalism. It’s heavy going in spots, as Sinclair’s writing style is an acquired taste and he tends to do what Jane calls “spending too much time in the weeds”, but it’s interesting to see him provide a less-than-admiring view of some figures we’ve been schooled to admire.
Darth will put a stop to this.

Wolfowitz blames media for exit
Wolfowitz interview
The outgoing president of the World Bank, Paul Wolfowitz, has told the BBC an “overheated” atmosphere at the bank and in the media forced him to resign.
Hmmm…
Hi –
Loo Hoo suggested I brng up this comment I posted at the end of the previous thread, so here it is!
I was actually at this (UMass) event on Friday – my husband received his (real) doctorate.
UMass made the blunder of blunders on this one, but it was so great to see everyone protesting. You literally could not hear a word the speaker said from the time they said Card’s name until he sat down.
So awesome!
Then, on Saturday, I went across town to Amherst College to see Patrick Fitzgerald give a talk, as a recipient of an honorary degree from that great school. The contrast was stark. Fitz – the epitome of honesty. Card – the face of all that is wrong with our current leadership.
Quite a weekend here!
TexBetsy @ 4
Wow. Powerful stuff.
Anyway, to clarify my last point.. rising inequality in the US means something uterly and completely different than rising inequality in China, which means something slightly different than rising inequality in Mexico. They may feel like the same thing, but the math and the causes are different, to try to make a very complex and academicky issue simple. Lou may (or may not) have a point with respect to increasing structural inequality under free trade in the US (due in large measure, IMO, the insanity of fiscal policy under idiots like shrubco), but this is not, and cannot be, the same point with respect to the other two countries in the WSJ graup.
raven @ 12
yeah.. figures, Wolfie gives off alot of hot air.
raven @ 12
Oh, and I thought he and Shaha were the source of all the heat. Silly me.
raven @ 12
Hey, that personal responsibility meme of the Redubyacans is just SO passe doncha know…
noen @ 7
Unfortunately, he tends towards the racist side of the slate (note his obsession with the myth of “reconquista”, the belief of right-wing nutbars that the Evil Meskins are going to take over all of North America unless they’re stopped). That, and he’s still reflexively pro-business and anti-labor (hence his longtime reluctance to back the minimum wage). But if even someone like him can be made to see that hiking the minimum wage is a good thing, then there’s hope for this country after all.
OT — If any of the bloggers are in the room, I am trying to help Cassie embed that video (from aisle 4), using wordpress, and not having any luck. We pasted the “embed” code into the code section but don’t have a video screen. Just blank. Any suggestions?
dakine01 @ 19
No, no, it still applies. To you and me anyway.
I’ve never seen a gizmo like your photo, PW!
raven @ 12
Awwwww! Poooor widdddllle warmongering jerrrrk. Can you see this, Wolfie? It’s the world’s smallest violin, playing the world’s saddest song, especially for you.
I’m ticked that the jerk didn’t follow through on his threat to “f*ck” the World Bankers that went after him and his (now ex) girlfriend. The World Bank deserves to be shut down — they’re all about making the world safe for capitalist ideology, and if that means that a few billion people get screwed, well so be it.
TexBetsy @ 21
Try here and here.
On a more substantive note, I have to laugh at the phrase “voluntarily allow non-binding”.
Wow, them’s fightin words. Scary indeed.
Actually, I guess, the fighting word is “rule”.
Hope @ 14
Wow! It is great to hear a 1st hand account. I was struck by the dicotomy between the awarding of an honorary doctorate on Card and the presentation by Fitz (I listened to the audio of Fitz’s speech, and was struck by how true-blue and consistent he was, as well as the fact that he “subtly” mentioned that Comey was once his partner in NYC and then his boss).
The worm is definitely turning!!!
You certainly will not hear or see anything about the A*P*C Rosen Weismann espionage trial during the MSM evening news. For that matter not the morning or afternoon news either. The Israeli lobby has been completely successful at keeping this trial and investigation under the radar.
How many times will the A*P*C Rosen Weismann espionage trial be delayed?
I am still not clear as to how McNulty’s resignation effects this trial?
Anyone hear or read anything about this upcoming trial in the MSM? Still going to JTA (Jewish Telegraphic Agency) and the wrong wing website Forward to get updates.
AT JTA
Prosecutors drop secret trial demand in A*P*C case
Prosecutors dropped their demands for a secret trial in the classified information case against two former A*P*C staffers.
Judge T.S. Ellis III, the federal judge trying the case in Alexandria, Va., last month rejected as unconstitutional the prosecution’s request for a trial before a jury sworn to secrecy. Instead, he ordered the prosecution to submit a proposal for declassifying evidence in the case against Steve Rosen, the American Israel Public Affairs Committee’s former foreign policy chief, and Keith Weissman, its former Iran analyst.
The prosecution had the option of appealing his decision or agreeing to go to trial, but without declassifying any more evidence. Instead, on Thursday, it acceded to Ellis’ order and submitted a new plan for declassifiying evidence. Ellis, prosecutors and defense lawyers will consider the plan next month.
Ellis is likely to set a new trial date before the end of June. So far, at least five trial dates have been set and have lapsed for Weissman and Rosen, who were indicted in August 2005. The two men are charged under never-used 1917 statute with receiving and relaying to colleagues, Israeli diplomats and journalists classified information about Iran.

Haha! A bunch of spoiled little Mama’s boys, every one of them.
TexBetsy @ 21
Hmmmm. I have no clue, TB.

Is YouTube windows media?
TexBetsy @ 22
That’s cuz we’re not part of the Little Boots base (The Haves and The Have Mores) nor are we practicing Redubyacans.
Phoenix Woman @ 30
There is a way–if you go to the wordpress help page there are instructions for the code. I think it is something very simple like [youtube=] insert the name of the link to the youtube page after the “=” sign. If that doesn’t work, find the help page–it is not all that hard to find.
So wonder why A*P*C is willing to pay Weismanns legal bills but not Rosen’s?
http://www.jta.org/cgi-bin/iow…..wyers.html
Wonder if the “cakewalk in Iraq” zealots are hoping to get a strike in on Iran before this trial?
Markinsanfran @ 26
It’s just another reminder that the editorial staff of the NYT includes folk who either sit on various corporate boards or are married to persons who do. That, and the NYT wants to let those pesky upstart Democratic congressmembers and Senators know who’s boss! It’s not your town, dammit, it’s David Broder’s and our town!
Shaha was to blame.
By the way, I chose that image of the cellphone with the old-style handset because I liked the incongruity.

Uh, I went over and there were two video screens showing. I clicked the first (top screen was blank) and nothing happened. I clicked the lower one (which did have a YouTube picture showing) and got video without sound.
kathleen @ 37
Good questions! And ones I’ll bet Wolfy really, really, REALLY doesn’t want answered.
Paging Representative Conyers! Paging Representative Waxman!
dakine01 @ 44
got sound after I let it play long enough…But there are two screens showing one on top is smaller than the actual YouTube vid…
This person Shaha Riza is very secretive with little public information. She was called a “communications advisor” but she obviously has allowed no press interviews. She has worked with Chalabi and Liz Cheney, with work experience also secret. But one can imagine. Her employment record reeks of political and other patronage.
Another issue that you will not hear about in the morning, afternoon or evening news!
You can go to the A*P*C website and read A*P*C’s Executive Director Urging House Members to Support Aid to Israel
A*P*C Executive Director Howard Kohr recently urged Members of Congress to support critical U.S. financial assistance to Israel. Testifying before a House Appropriations Subcommittee, Kohr said U.S. security aid is vital in helping Israel with its defense modernization needs.
“The ongoing burden of thwarting Palestinian attacks, defending against the asymmetric threat posed by Iranian proxies such as Hizballah, deterring neighboring states from turning to regional conflict, and meeting the threats from unconventional weaponry further underlines the importance of U.S. aid to Israel,” Kohr said.
President Bush has requested $2.4 billion in aid for Israel this year, down from $3 billion per year from 1986-1998. The proposed aid for Israel represents the last year of a 10-year plan between Israel and the United States to phase out economic aid while gradually increasing the amount of military aid.

dakine01 @ 43
Think we fixed it. Can you check again? I assume your speakers are on. :)
Phoenix Woman @ 45
Yeah, I lost my clearances for being too honest. Dishonesty is rewarded. Who’da thunk it…
TexBetsy @ 41
Can’t play the video. I think you have to type the code in by hand–that is I mean that is the easiest way. the code is in brackets–so it looks like this: [google=whatever-the-link-is]. Or [youtube=whatever-the-link-is]
The person who can answer many of the questions surrounding Ms Riza’s State Department employment is her former direct supervisor at that detail, Elizabeth Cheney. Chairman Waxman should subpoena her.
That would really frost Darth, don’t ya think?
Frank33 @ 46
sounds more spyish to me
TexBetsy @ 48
Looks like you took out the good video. All that’s showing now is the blank that nothing happens from.
lolo @ 2
Hello!
dakine01 @ 42
I went over and there is one screen that will not play. It is a flash screen.
Frank33 @ 47
Many have said that she has long been a proponent of overthrowing secular Arab strongmen, seeking a benefit to subjugated women through that route. Some have said she is responsible for Wolfie’s deep thoughts on the “cakewalk” that was our Iraq occupation.
dakine01 @ 54
Looks like it’s good to go :})
Teddy or Frank33, any links?
TeddySanFran @ 55
Very interesting. Having lived in the Arab world, I have some sympathy for her position–and that of many women like her. Which is essentially comes from enormous desperation. But. And this is a big but! It is also a position which is only held by women who come from places of tremendous privilege…and with that privilege comes a huge blind spot, with regard to the fact of economic, educational and class priviledge. Also worth noting that (as in much of the Iranian exile community) that many of these people are mainly pissed off because said strong-men interfere with priviledge that is considered to be a birth-right. Hierarchy and the pride of hierarchy is all-important in the Arab world.
My guess is that this is a woman who grew up in a household staffed by an army of very low-paid servants. My instincts are usually right on target in these matters.
Phoenix Woman @ 20
Lou Dobb’s wife is hispanic, I’m serious. I think the racist bit is over the top in his case. He’s all about economics, always has been.
Decrease financial aid to the Israeli government, while increasing military aid. What do you want to bet it’s a bottom-line net increase in aid?
On this Iran meeting business? I think I’ll wait and see. Could this be pre-election year window dressing and PR?
Oklahoma kiddo @ 60
Ask Holy Joe!
I’m gonna put my Hollywood hat on and suggest a title for the Shaha/Wolfie story.
I smell boffo B.O.
I trust our government as much as I trust the Israeli government to be interested in peace in the Middle East. And the reverse.
Cozumel @ 61
I don’t think he’s racist…. he’s just a knee-jerk populist who comes off as being intolerant because he doesn’t know when to stop bloviating on the air… oh, and his eocnomics don’t work either. Just another perfect occasional candidate for KO’s worst person of the air award…
Israel has enough nuclear weapons to blow up the Middle East. I think Iran knows that.
Lou Dobbs and his wife on 60 Minutes.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a_N6P3zPbqE
Yet amidst these “about faces” some ideologues have become more ferocious than ever.
The media is to blame for the Iraq War. Obviously.
Cozumel @ 59
Interesting about his wife.
But from a “populist” (or just common sense) perspective, what is going to drive the capitalist engine if the american worker no longer has discretionary income to spend on “stuff”? I am figuring that Dobbs is taking a slightly longer-term perspective in this respect. If Americans can’t afford to buy it, then certainly the “new” lower-paid workers in other place won’t be able to. I am not an economist or a rocket scientist, and even I can see this.
But there seems to be no documentation or record of whatever her agenda is. What has she done or written? Why the repeated promotions to policy decision maker, for a noncitizen. What did she do at the World Bank? These have not been answered. Spy? Obviously. But for who?
Oklahoma kiddo @ 62
And were all those cluster bombs we gave them last year for bombing innocent civilians a present or just chipped off the endless debit card balance?
Jane Hamsher @ 63
The smart-bin. LOL!
As promised, meet WeeRog.

Perhaps Paul Reubens could be convinced to play both parts. Wolfie and Shaha are the prime exemplar of that rule about owners growing to look like their pets, or mates like one another — just not sure which!

Let me see if I can get this straight. It was okay for the Jewish people to be given a homeland in 1948. But it is not alright to do the same for the Palestinians now. And it is fine for Israel to be the only Middle Eastern country allowed to have nuclear weapons.

Your frustration is just making it worse is all. Think positive. You can do this. You’ve already DONE it once. just click the brain back to when you were “de-bugging” to get rid of the two screens. Speaking of Darth, if you get the chance this evening, either stay up or record when the History Channel repeats “Star Wars: The Legacy Revealed” at 1:00am est/12:00am cst.
I’ve been watching it and it’s amazing how many parallels the events of today have to past myths, history, and Star Wars itself. Believe it or not, Newt Gingrich is in it and comments about Star Wars (I imagine representing the Evil Empire’s perspective). It also shows a clip of Bush SOTU and compares it to the Sith.
Check it out if you can.

Just noting that some cable movie channel ran Apocalypse Now yesterday as part of the MemDay fest. I never miss n chance to see it. About halfway thru up the river Willard is absorbing Kurtz’s bio/dossier.
Kurtz says the first thing to do is eliminate the 1 year tours which allows the soldiers to be ‘dilletantes at war’.
Considering the unsane/insane conditions at work in both conflicts, like for instance deciding who is the ally vs enemy, this would seem a ripe comparison to what is evolving in Iraq. Per the extended/repeated tours.

Garrett asked about Nanny Hoo today. ;)
oh merde – forgot to sign out.
very busy mods, if there’s a way to change my handle above back to kirk murphy, i’d be grateful.
(if your nimble fingers are too busy editing and fending off wingnuts, I do understand. believe me.)
looks like you fixed it km – showing you without your backstage pass now :)
Holy Superbaby Batman! Little ‘rog sleeping through the night already?????
I. Am. Impressed.
And he IS a totally scrumptious cutie. Congrats Balrog, Mama Balrog, and Sibrogs.

TSF, I was late to the party but sure like the way you handled the “Dr” detractor.
Cindy Sheehan Throws in the Towel
Apparently it’s against the law to criticize Democrats for being the cowardly backsliding scumbags that they are.
Kirk… If I had an FDL t-shirt I would send it to you. You earned one today…)
Enough about that…pull up a lilly pad and chill.
Hi Suzanne! – hanks for the news – yay!
Hi Teddy”Frisco” *g* [ducks]
For or sun for y’al today?
Bedtime for Balrog. Night all.
I’ve heard TRex say ATTACH before, but Kirk was blindsided on that one. That hurt!
Night Balrog!
kirk murphy @ 148
Kirk, I want to say that your posts are a wonderfully valuable contribution to FDL and to the progressive blogosphere in general. I am particularly impressed that a MD is speaking out about the issues that you highlight. High time!
Goodnight Balrog. Kisses to the little ones.
Good nite, Kirk.
Sorry-crossed up the list of people I’m a fan of. Good nite, Balrog. Good to see you again, Kirk.
Suzanne @ 155
Which thread was that, Ma’am? Missed a bunch today, but still snagged a Zed!!! *g*
Loo Hoo: OT, but I was really interested in what you said t’other evening about Janis Joplin when you saw her in concert…..sitting on the stage and saying she was lonely.
I was still a kid in the ’60’s, but I became a Janis fan when I “grew up”……something so raw, passionate and vulnerable about her……seemed like she was tragically destined to die young. But then there were so many others who did, back then.

Thanks, Eureka!
And thank you Teddy!
I hope my Frisco joke (?) doesn’t seem dismissive – I really appreciate what you said to oour dlightful visitor.
Some people have such strong projections about those two little letters. Sheesh.
I couldn’t be bothered about the ad hominen content, but i really didn’t like the tone – that sort of abusive stuff shuts other commenters down.
Teddy, I’m so glad you (and others) called the weenie on their rudeness.
I hope that helped other commenters feel safer about contributing – especially those who are yet to make their first comment!
Balrog @ 159
Nite, Pappy!!! I’m sick with envy, it took at least a month for each of my brood to sleep thru the Nite!!! :P
CTuttle @ 170
Mine took over a year! (But he was sick for much of that time, and is completely healthy now, so I guess it is OK.)
RonD, it’s good to see you here. Thanks to you and Woodhall Hollow – I am blushing.
CTuttle, here it is. Check #35 (Wyld Pyrate). Teddy’s smackdown is 10 or 15 down from that.
Sorry

I agree with ya, by the time the third rolled around I thought I had it all figured out!!! However, my boy, had other plans….
Loo Hoo. @ 173
Thanx, Loo Hoo and Suz!!!
Loo Hoo. @ 174
He had a comment at 60 that Teddy responded to quite crisply.

oddmommy, that was such a great concert and we waited around to leave because getting out is always such a traffic nightmare anyway. Janis went backstage for a while, then came back out. She had been drinking her Southern Comfort during the concert, and just wanted to be with her fans. It was really cool. Wish my date had been willing to stay and see if she wanted to party.
That inspired me to drink Southern Comfort-one time only!
kirk — thanks for your great posts, and i’ve always gotcher back when the rudies slip in. i’m sure like any front-pager, you’d welcome a vigorous debate about the actualities; i wanted to be sure folks understood that we simply don’t permit the kind of rudeness your attacker exhibited.
for anyone hoping for a real engagement on the issues, the rudie’s approach was entirely counterproductive, i thought.
TeddySanFran @ 182
Thank you, Teddy.
You have really moved me.
(Not enough to dislodge the current lap kitty, fortunately)
Discussions of food safety and GMOs really bring out the rudies – I’m grateful you are here.
I’m expecting to see alot of the “B-Z” spin as we discuss food safety and GMOs.
We’ll discuss “A”
{Today’s A: GMO soy kills 55% of baby rats in three weeks.]
Apologies to the mods and all at the Lake for the extra bother from writing about Big Ag, Big Food, and GMOs.
Whenever we’re discussing an “A” really threatening to Big Mutant Food, we’ll get deluged with “b-Z”.
B to Z.
Reminds me of B-M
Burston-Marsteller.
If not their account, their playbook.
B to Z. THey’ll sing, they’ll dance, they’ll pie fight.
Whatever it takes to drown out A.
Kirk—on behalf of all the mods, let me just say:
Bring It On
RBG @ 184
Ditto.
Thanks RBG. Thanks Suzanne.
