Under the Taliban, she returned to her homeland from a refugee camp and ran a secret school for women. She did not back down.

Can she also come to the states to counteract this embarrassment?

I feel badly for the kids who will visit this place and think they’re learning valuable historic facts and information.

What a wonderful Democracy we helped create in Afghanistan. Iraq is working to catch up. It may cost us another 1000 soldiers but we’ll get it done. It will be just as stupid as the one in Afghanistan. Too many factions in Iraq and too many tribes, war lords and poppys in Afghanistan. We don’t understand that kind of culture that has been that way for a mellenium or longer and think we can change it with guns. Our government is not going to broker peace with blood lusting lunatics. We are in the middle of a blood feud in Iraq and trying to liberate people who do not want to be liberated in Afghanistan. In Iraq the killing will end when the Sunni and Shia’ are tired of killing each other. Either will climb over bodies of Americans and Al Qaeda to get at each other. Maybe a method is to re-locate those willing and leave the country until the thugs kill each other off then re-claim the land for the expatriates. It may sound goofy but is it worse than what we are doing now? And we won’t lose any more soldiers that way. I think we owe it to the people whose country we screwed up to take them out of harms way because they are needlessly dying just because they are there. The only people stupider than those ‘leading’ Iraq and Afghanistan are those leading our country.

The Brits are in Bara by the skin of their teeth. They don’t patrol within the governorate as a whole. They can no longer use helicopters except an night. They now rely on satellite surveillance to tell when a major barrage is goin through.
The Joint Coordination Centre (Basrah city centre) came under 4 hour siege.

It is very dangerous for foreigners to get around in vast swathes of Irak but that’s not te same as getting no info.

There’ve been a lot of farmers and bakers strikes in the southern governorates recently. That’s not good news. Couple that with lots of convoy attacks and its very bad news indeed.

PS: They mostly have to use helicopters to get from base to base. -

The article you read in the Belfast Telegraph was probably a reprint of this from the UK Independent.

Opium: Iraq’s deadly new export

I don’t always agree with Patric Cockburn but he’s a good journalist who doesn’t spend his time being fed BS in the green zone - and it matches with what Im hearing from Irakis.

Added: Yup it’s the same report. Tip - sometimes the Telegraph edit his pieces down always worth checking The Indy just in case if it’s an article you’re going to save.

Okay, thanks. I hit all the ‘foreign’ presses periodically during the week. Thank someone for the Internets! Al Gore? And thanks to George, I now know there are more than one. ;)

In the piece there’s a bit of a paragraph that reads: “It is too dangerous for foreign journalists to visit Diwaniya but the start of opium poppy cultivation is attested by two students from there and a source in Basra familiar with the Iraqi drugs trade.”

The Brits are in Basra…
