And it looks an awful lot like this scene from Charles Dickens's Little Dorrit.
In the scene, our hero, Arthur Clennam is having a rather awkward conversation with Flora, his teenage sweetheart who married another man and became a widow, and somewhere along the way became very, very, deeply silly. She is accompanied by Mr. F's Aunt (Mr. F being the dead husband), her "legacy" from her brief marriage.
The old lady has sat through this interview in a glowering silence, until…
A diversion was occasioned here, by Mr F.’s Aunt making the following inexorable and awful statement:
‘There’s mile-stones on the Dover road!’
With such mortal hostility towards the human race did she discharge this missile, that Clennam was quite at a loss how to defend himself; the rather as he had been already perplexed in his mind by the honour of a visit from this venerable lady, when it was plain she held him in the utmost abhorrence. He could not but look at her with disconcertment, as she sat breathing bitterness and scorn, and staring leagues away. Flora, however, received the remark as if it had been of a most apposite and agreeable nature; approvingly observing aloud that Mr F.’s Aunt had a great deal of spirit. Stimulated either by this compliment, or by her burning indignation, that illustrious woman then added, ‘Let him meet it if he can!’ And, with a rigid movement of her stony reticule (an appendage of great size and of a fossil appearance), indicated that Clennam was the unfortunate person at whom the challenge was hurled.
Errrrr, uhhhh, charmed, I'm sure.
I suspect that this is rather how the other guests on Friday's Hardball felt when Manichea Morass started twisting her head all the way around and telling the other guests that their mothers suck cocks in hell.
More from Mr. F's Aunt:
A momentary silence that ensued was broken by Mr F.’s Aunt, who had been sitting upright in a cataleptic state since her last public remark. She now underwent a violent twitch, calculated to produce a startling effect on the nerves of the uninitiated, and with the deadliest animosity observed:
‘You can’t make a head and brains out of a brass knob with nothing in it. You couldn’t do it when your Uncle George was living; much less when he’s dead.’
Mr Pancks was not slow to reply, with his usual calmness, ‘Indeed, ma’am! Bless my soul! I’m surprised to hear it.’ Despite his presence of mind, however, the speech of Mr F.’s Aunt produced a depressing effect on the little assembly; firstly, because it was impossible to disguise that Clennam’s unoffending head was the particular temple of reason depreciated; and secondly, because nobody ever knew on these occasions whose Uncle George was referred to, or what spectral presence might be invoked under that appellation.
Therefore Flora said, though still not without a certain boastfulness and triumph in her legacy, that Mr F.’s Aunt was ‘very lively to-day, and she thought they had better go.’ But Mr F.’s Aunt proved so lively as to take the suggestion in unexpected dudgeon and declare that she would not go; adding, with several injurious expressions, that if ‘He’—too evidently meaning Clennam—wanted to get rid of her, ‘let him chuck her out of winder;’ and urgently expressing her desire to see ‘Him’ perform that ceremony.
Amazing how prescient Mr. Dickens could be.

I don’t feel so good
If I were planning a coup, I’d issue a directive granting myself dictatorial power in event of a national emergency. And then I’d issue another directive granting myself authority to declare such national emergencies. For details, see: http://www.chattanoogan.com/ar…..107907.asp
I don’t feel so good
Melanie Morgon has that effect
It’s amazing how one little bonk from Spocko can send MM whizzing out of control.
Oh please, I beg you, just throw the wretched old hag out the winder and be done with her apoplectic behavior and her unwise but wizened visage. Be merciful and put an end to her apparent sufferings and ours.

I really think that would require a stake through the heart, some garlic, and salt. Where’s Buffy when you really need her?
And now, it is time to retire for the evening. Good night and good luck.
TRex missed our twins birthday party up here in Athens today because I don’t get a day off from work tomorrow.
Pity we were in different cities. It wasn’t bad.
how’s with you guys?
I can remember when Melanie did the news on a REAL station and was very good. Must have slipped a cog somewhere along the way.

Or that there is a bus coming.
Night Mp. Pleasant dreams.
He. Nice post. Well, unfortunately, Melanie’s the future of rethugism in ‘merica. There was an interesting article linked in Huffingtonpost on the grassroots role of Coultergeist-like political operatives, in organizing college students to hate… sort of the inside story of the ilk of Commissar Goodling:
http://www.phoenixnewtimes.com…..ulter/full
..a Morganlike political op started 57 right wing clubs at various college in AZ and NM, presumably acting for the rethug party.
I hope to goodness there is a similar blue movement, or the Melanie’s of the world are going to become a lot more popular….

Might I offer a profound thought as my gift ?!!
Someone asked me once, “How do I find my soulmate?”
I had never thought of that question or heard it before, but I was in supremely high consciousness, and from somewhere within came the answer, “First find your soul, then you will find your soulmate!” And when I told her, a light went on in her eyes.

Bush Makes Power Grab – And Response
posted May 24, 2007
President Bush, without so much as issuing a press statement, on May 9 signed a directive that granted near dictatorial powers to the office of the president in the event of a national emergency declared by the president.
The “National Security and Homeland Security Presidential Directive,” with the dual designation of NSPD-51, as a National Security Presidential Directive, and HSPD-20, as a Homeland Security Presidential Directive, establishes under the office of president a new National Continuity Coordinator.
That job, as the document describes, is to make plans for “National Essential Functions” of all federal, state, local, territorial, and tribal governments, as well as private sector organizations to continue functioning under the president’s directives in the event of a national emergency.
The directive loosely defines “catastrophic emergency” as “any incident, regardless of location, that results in extraordinary levels of mass casualties, damage, or disruption severely affecting the U.S. population, infrastructure, environment, economy, or government functions.”

That capitulation has be totally bummed out. It shows that even the good guys don’t have a clue about framing a fight.
Objectively, to get funds to the troops:
* Congress has to authorize the funds
* The President signs the authorization.
If either party fails to do their job, important functions of government don’t get funded. Here is how I’d frame the current situation.

Hi Suzanne, can y’all handle a comment of 160 lines?
Three (3) contractors are bidding to fix a broken fence at the
White House in D.C…
One from New Jersey , another from Tennessee and the third,
Florida. They go with a White House official to examine the fence.
The Florida contractor takes out a tape measure and does some
measuring, then works some figures with a pencil.
“Well”, he says, “I figure the job will the job will run
about $900: $400 for material, $400 for my crew and $100 profit for me.”
The Tennessee contractor also does some measuring and figuring,
then says, “I can do this job for $700: $300 for materials, $300 for my
crew and $100 profit for me.”
The New Jersey contractor doesn’t measure or figure, but leans
over to the White House official and whispers, “$2,700.”
The official, incredulous, says, “You didn’t even measure like
the other guys!” “How did you come up with such a high figure?”
The New Jersey contractor whispers back, “$1000 for me, $1000
for you, and we hire the guy from Tennessee to fix the fence.”
“Done!”, replies the government official.
Wigwam, better to break it up like Hugh does into Part One, Part Two, etc.
Wigwam@173, Your cite of the Posse Comitatus Act is dead on, in regards to Federal Troops, however, the Federalizing of the National Guard, is not the problem you’re painting!!! Essentially, it was done to override Governor’s objections to the deployment of their militia to Iraq/Afghanistan, oftentimes depleting their respective states of vital First-Responder Assets!!! For instance, Hawai’i needs Medevac services for interisland service, as there are no trauma centers on the outer Isles!!!
just passing through to say happy “b-day, rex bros.”

I wondered why Disney kept them around and supported them until I heard about the Imus’ contract. I’ll bet they all have those kind of contracts. Disney figures their brand is so strong that it an withstand association with them and still not lose as much money as they would in a wrongful dismissal lawsuit.
I’m not that clever in human ways. Melanie Morgan is really smart. Her contract lawyer (and the others) must be brilliant. This is how the right supports their own.
Think about the millions they spend on think tanks too. “We’ll pay you 175,000 a year to just sell our nonsense and make it sound good or throw sand into real science.”

CTuttle @ 209
:)
Suzanne @ 200
Good Nite, Ma Cheri, belatedly!!!
CTuttle @ 193
I hope that my governor has made arrangements with privately owned companies.
tw3k @ 202
When you combine this with the infiltration of the military and the DoJ with right-wing operatives. And the building of a massive system of detentions centers. And the suspension of habeas corpus. And the use of federal prosecutors to suppress voting rights. And the rigging of voting machines. And the establishment of a privatized Praetorian Guard led by “true believers.” And the total surveillance of all activities of all citizens. And the declaration of a perpetual state of war. Now I begin to suspect that I’m seeing the outline of a plot to suspend the Constitution.
In the words of Aristotle:
tw3k @ 211
Fortunately, I have that opportunity!!! However, Pugwash Nova Scotia in the winter is lightyears from my accustomed balmy weather here on the Big Isle of Hawai’i!!! ;)
tbsa @ 50
late to the party, as usual. the NSPD-51 reeks of Addington and Yoo, so, in a sense, “nothing new here” but we do want to raise hell about it.
the NYT article is about something that has been mentioned before, something people were suspecting might be going on. this time we have the facts, and you can bet that it’s widespread. it’s just more proof that we need to get out. if we’re not going to kill 80% of the Iraqi people we need to leave. every single soldier, marine, civilian contractor, everybody. every senator and member of the house of representatives needs to read that article.
the American army is training Iraqis to kill American soldiers. we now have even more proof of just how insane this whole misadventure truly is. an army can kill people. an army can destroy buildings. an army can occupy land. an army cannot change a culture.
CTuttle @ 216
heh, yeah that’d put a crimp in the life style fo sho.
Thanks, fahrender.
CTuttle @ 203
I defer to your superior knowledge on this stuff. As I said, I’m no expert on it.
tw3k @ 202
Apologies and thanks for the correction. I’m using a Mac PowerBook that has a lot of bounce in its click button.
fahrender @ 217
Wayne White paints a pretty bleak future.
fahrender, I usually have to read your comments the next day, on the late, late nite thread!!! The Army is not trained to change society, Period! You’re certainly right about the specific Unitarians of the ‘Unitary Executive’!!!
Hey LooHoo, I thought you were planning a trip downunder, or is senility setting in? Actually those are not exclusive options.
tw3k @ 221
Ooh, bookmarked it for future perusal, thanx!!!
Wigwam @ 215
great quote Wigwam! I wish i had the eloquence to speak of optimistic redirection.
petedownunder @ 223
Hey Pete! I finally catch up with you! How’s things in Brisvegas?
CTuttle @ 224
np, he sure is insightful. I’m going to listen to it again as he speaks in great detail about many the factors involved.
Aristotle’s wisdom reverberates through the centuries, as wise and profound today as when first uttered!!! Sigh… Those who fail to understand history, are doomed to live it…
petedownunder @ 223
Not until December of ‘08. I sure hope all is well with you. When will/did you get married? You know we have a baby Balrog, right?
Wigwam, what was the 160 lines you have?
tw3k @ 230
You Dare??? Bwhahaha ;)
CTuttle @ 231
lmao.
well maybe linky :)
tw3k @ 230
I have a whole bunch of links to and quote from articles that indicate that Bush and company may have some kind of a coup in mind. I’ve alluded to that stuff at 215. I think that I really need to clean it up a bit before posting it.
tw3k @ 232
Ooh, sounds like a ‘go’! Wigwam, are ya game??? (rubbing hands in anticipation!)
Got this in an email from the former mrs. serenade, ConSec’s mom.
Wigwam @ 233
Sounds like it would make a good article on dKos or here.
Subway Serenade @ 235
Sheer Coincidence? Hmmmm…. Bwhahahahaha!!!
CTuttle @ 234
lol, and your dare response gave me the sudden urge to go play quake!
Persiflage – Hi. Things are good but busy. Heading to the US next week for 10 days. Still on for Perth 29 June
LooHoo – I was aware of the WeeRog, but missed it that you and Balrog are conected, or am I drawing the wrong inference here. I’m always the last to know
Still not married, The Future Mrs Downunder is still a bit coy, but I’m nothing if not persistent.
Leaving work for home so I’ll be off line for a bit
Subway Serenade @ 235
OMG!!!111 it all makes sense now :)
Que Sera, Sera, I’ll see y’all on the flip side, Aloha Oe!!!
I’m home. Anybody still awake at the Lake?
Okay, Lurking Moderator, I have a 160 line file that I’d like to post. It contains a lot of links to stuff. The HTML looks good when I pop it up in firfox, and it looks good when I preview it here. However, I’ll wait for your instruction.
Wigwam, break it into parts like Suzanne said.
howz the weather downunder peter?
As Aristotle writes in the Politics: “It is of the intrinsic character of the tyrant that he works to insure that his subjects everywhere are spied upon so that nothing of their dealings is a secret from him; … and he conspires always to set men against their own friends, the common people against the privileged and the wealthy, and so forth. And he will ruin the treasury to pay the military … levying great fiscal burdens upon his people; and finally, constantly does he foment war, to provide the matrix in which his power expandsand every challenge of his misdeeds may be called treason. … But no virtuous man will find success in such a reign.”
… Some fear that The Decider may decide not to leave office on 1/20/09, e.g. Naomi Wolf and Justin Raimondo. IMHO, this is a very real possibility that needs to be dicussed.

IF I WERE PLANNING A COUP …

PRECEDENTS and PARADIGMS
As Aristotle writes in the Politics: “It is of the intrinsic character of the tyrant that he works to insure that his subjects everywhere are spied upon so that nothing of their dealings is a secret from him; … and he conspires always to set men against their own friends, the common people against the privileged and the wealthy, and so forth. INFILTRATION
– GENERAL
… I’d install a political commisar in every agency of the federal government, just like President Bush did recently: http://www.nytimes.com/2007/01…..ref=slogin
– MILITARY
… I’d shift assets and responsibilities from the uniformed military, who might be loyal to the people and their republic, to private mercinaries reporting to commisars loyal only to me: http://www.gnn.tv/articles/294…..Petersburg
… I’d install commisars sympathetic to my cause in each unit of the military and police:
“America’s Holy Warriors” by Chris Hedges, Truthdig.com, 12/31/06 http://www.truthout.org/docs_2006/010207H.shtml
“For God’s Sake” by Paul Krugman, The New York Times, 4/13/07 http://www.truthout.org/docs_2006/041307D.shtml
… I’d establish a private Praetorian Guard reporting not through uniformed-military channels but through my loyal wealthy campaign contributors, just like a recent LA Times says Bush has done. “Our mercenaries in Iraq”
http://www.latimes.com/news/op…..t-opinions
– INTELLIGENCE
– LEGAL SYSTEM
… I’d plan on consolidating my grasp on power by using the nation’s judicial and penal systems to harass, intimidate, and ultimately crush all opposition. “The Department of Injustice” by Paul Krugman.
… Under what circumstance would you attempt to fill all federal prosecutor position with political hacks? Read Krugman as to what has happened, with Arlen Specter’s assistance: “Surging and Purging” by Paul Krugman, The New York Times, Friday 19 January 2007: http://www.truthout.org/docs_2006/011907A.shtml
… A parallel legal system that I controlled and where defendants had no rights would be a good thing to have. Robert Parry explains how Bush has been accomplished this: http://www.truthout.org/docs_2006/011907D.shtml
MEDIA and PRESS
… I’d consolidate the media under the control of powerful oligarch allies.

My friends from the eastern block and from the intelligence community insist that current U.S. media is every bit as compliant as were Pravda and Tass, and much more dangerous because Soviet citizens knew that Pravda and Tass were compliant.
DETENTION

CONCLUSION
Per Helen Keller:
I tried breaking it into chunks of about 60 lines each, and that didn’t work. I’ll work on it a bit more and post it as a diary over at DailyKos, which seems to be a bit less sensitive on some things.
tw3k @ 245
Weather is typical Oz winter – 75 during the day, 50’s at night. We had a little rain today but generally very dry. The dams are at 19% and we are at Stage 5 water restrictions – forget the garden and 4 minute showers.
Al the Spook here with a drive-by posting:
I’ve spent some time while i’ve been unable to post doing research on all the TFH (Tin Foil Hat) triggers, like federalizing the NG, Blackwater, Overriding Pose Commitatus, and now the COOP document. Taken together, in a linear sequence, it does indeed look bad. In fact, it reads like one of Robert Ludlum’s conspiracy Thrillers (say The Matarese Circle). And in all fairness I cannot say that the current administration would not be able to mount a “false flag” operation and use these things to destroy the constitution and enslave everyone they don’t like. As denizens of this lovely lake know, when I’m down and depressed these very fantasies which I spent far too many years gaming out (actually writing the simulator code used to devise the liveware games) actually seem plausible to me. But once the endorphins are back to normal levels the angry ghosts fade and reason sets it.
Now for a dirty little secret: my son in law is a recovering fundie. Through studying him and his insights, I’m very comfortable that I have a working understanding of the fundie mindset. I’m not going into gory details here, but might later if i log on again and am this high on fatigue poisons again :). but the bottom line is this:
THE FANTASY OF BUSH’S FASCIST TAKEOVER IS A MIRROR IMAGE OF THE XTIANIST RAPTURE.
The Xtianists don’t worry about anything after Teh Rapture; they’re with Jeebus and everything’s ok. (The idiotic Left Behind series attempts to use this to indulge in what I call FBP (Fundie Bible Porn), namely fantasies of how the world will be delightfully humbled and destroyed by Jeebus while the Faithful (TM) look on from Kevin. (Why yes I DO watch Bill Maher, why do you ask?))
In the same way, the TFH crowd simply says, “we’re all in camps and we’re gonna die” and stops at that. They may make vague noises about being used as slave labor and such, but they don’t really stop to consider for even five minutes what such a thing would do to the country.
I don’t have time to go into all the details, but I’ll sum it up like this: If chimpy and darth were to actually invoke this idiotic power grab fantasized about by the TFH crowd,
….wait for it….
they’be be dead inside a month, killed by their own people to put a stop to the disaster. GHWB is both competent and effective (also amoral but that goes without saying); he will NOT let chimpy and darth ruin everything he and his family have bent over and taken in the tush for the last three generations be ripped away by his black sheep son. And it would be ripped away, the survivors of the chaos would see to that. GHWB will NOT let that happen, and his people are the ONLY ones in this abominable administration that can make anything work above the level of a street gang.
In my next post, i’ll outline why all the TFH signals aren’t actually worrisome, and why even if they were we wouldn’t need to worry about it. And finally I’ll explain why Bu$hCo is and always will be an enabler and a scavenger, doing the heavy lifting for peanuts while the big boys get the lion’s share (and that’s appropriate, because even at their finest the Bush Family are Jackals.)
petedownunder @ 247
Today we had one of the heaviest rains in months, yippee! As we get very little rain in summer I’m hoping for a very wet winter this year, though not on June 28/29.
Wow! temp-wise your winter is about like spring here in NW Pennsylvania.
Sorry to hear about the water shortage.
The promised post about why all the TFH (Tin Foil Hat) triggers aren’t really that worrisome. And why the democrats have reluctantly let them be done.
One Answer:
Terrorist Nuke.
I have a file on my hard drive which is a PDF of a white paper done to study the results of setting off a TEN KILOTON (that’s right folks, just a tiny 10K bomb) in a container at the san diego container port. Tomorrow I will find the link i got it from (the CBS Jericho TV series blog orignally, but they got it from somewhere else too) and post that.
To summarize, about 20 million people decide to have sleepovers in Las Vega, San Francisco, Flagstaff, Denver, etc. They have no gas, no money (EMP blow out the ATM network locally) and no food. But they do have guns, fear, and bad information coming over the MSM and the Internet.
The result is beyond horrible. And the guys who ran this simulation are mainstream guys who have no axes to grind except keeping our country alive.
Their solution: the national guard and the army have to commit FAST, no fooling around, under federal disaster management control. Personal travel has to be stopped until the infrastructure can be fixed. HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS of people will be contaminated by radioactive fallout and/or debris. They have to be contained, triaged, fed, and housed until better arrangements can be made. They WON’T WANT TO COOPERATE, they will be afraid like none of us who haven’t had the dubious privilege of enduring military strategic bombing can imagine. The only way to avoid our entire infrastructure coming down around our head for good is to federalize the mess, lock the necessary people up, and try to put humpty dumpty back together again.
Oh, and the reason chimpy did the COOP thing was because some major blogger started yelling that he hadn’t ever submitted one like he was supposed to. So chimpy gave it to Abu Gonz and say “fix it”. You can guess the result.
And if this sounds horrible, you should try to image doing it with 1960’s technology where EVERY MAJOR CITY had been nuked. And covered with ebola, anthrax and ghod knows what else. And VX’d where they didn’t throw a bio. I lived this crap for twenty years. I would say it’s a wonder I’m not crazy, but then maybe I am and don’t know it. (How does one really tell?)
And the horrible thing is, we figured out how to do it. I am not allowed to say what we would have had to do, but let’s just say it would have made iraq at present look like a tailgate party. But our nation would have survived and in about forty years been back to normal. Russia would have been a radioactive, biological hell for about a thousand years, but since we assumed they had started it, we didn’t mind.
chimpy and his pack of losers are wannabees.
is that a summary of the tv show or some sorta contingency?
I finally got all those references to articles about stuff that Bush has been doing that looks like preparaton for a coup into a DKos diary: http://www.dailykos.com/story/2007/5/28/54615/1194
And my apologies to the moderators for making a mess. Please dump that earlier stuff that is now in moderation.
tw3k @ 221
tw3k (#221): thanks for that. i just listened to the whole interview. a lot of stuff i didn’t know but the consequences of the pullout i had imagined. we’ve gotta do it, and the sooner the better. will it happen? not for an agonizingly long time …….
p.s. i definitely intend to go back to that website. it’s a winner.
Alfred Kelgarries @ 253
What are the good resources on personal preparation for such a scenario?
fahrender @ 253
Sure is. I picked it up from Ian’s blog when he posted the other day. I’m going to give it another listen .

dam media.
tw3k @ 260
Individually the various revelations seem like business as usual for the Bush White House. But when you line them all up and the picture emerges, it gets rather frightening. About the only thing that will save us is Bush’s reputation for incompetence.
Oh, and by the way, Bush is reported to have bought land in Paraguay, just in case.
[Mod: If you include a period after your link, the link doesn’t work.]
Wigwam @ 259
I hope he goes there soon :D
Good morning pups!
Good morning egregious!
Good morning, pups. Today in the NYT Roger Cohen in Jerusalem writes on Israel and the price of blindness, Nicholas Kristof in China writes on how the Chinese invest much more in developing human capital than we do, and Paul Krugman says that future historians will be baffled by how easily we were misled into a disastrous war.
http://mgpaquin.wordpress.com/
I’ve got coffee and tea ready if anyone wants some, and because it’s a special day I have some chocolate croissants for a treat. Enjoy.
Morning all! Birds are singing, clouds are thick.
The Krugman column had me muttering about the millions that protested before the war. We are American and we did see the disaster unfolding.
Sigh. I feel like I’m trying to walk in molasses.
Hi all
It actually rained last night. Not much but maybe it will help with the fires here in Greene County Tennessee.
Both the Kristoff and Krugman columns are worth a read today.
While in NZ, I taught English to many Asian students and I’m stuck with the immense desire and sacrifice to learn on the part of many of them. Meanwhile, Bush smirks about getting the “big prize” and being a C student and the local university has doubled tuition in four years and the losing football team gets expanded, fancy facilities. My daughter just graduated from university (yeah!) so no more tuition hikes for her, but still have one more to get through tertiary education before I feel the parental responsibility lessens on that score.
Melanie Morgan is the Republican version of the human shield. But not really human. Pundits and those that seek to remain “above gutter politics” use her puppet show for cover. Plop her on a chair before the media, and their job is done, in abstencia. If her skull were visible, there would be a garbage collection for a brain.
Has everyone seen wigwams excellent diary on Kos?
http://www.dailykos.com/story/2007/5/28/54615/1194
And Scarecrow’s upstairs.
snowbird42 @ 273
I rec’d it, and hope others will do so, too. While you’re there, there’s a diary on some opera buffa (why put it all on the Japanese?) from Texas that you might want to check out:
Walkout shuts down Texas House
Craddick, and many of the members who walked out, seem all to be Republicans.
Check that: both Dems and Repubs walked out on the guy, and apparently those who stayed are not necessarily his allies either. Interesting.
Are the Iraqi people safer yet?
Iraqi children pay the price with their lives for our illegal invasion.

What an incredibly fucking bloody crime!
snowbird42 @ 270
Rained here too! Athens Ohio. Sure needed it!
Who does Blackwater answer to? No body..
Blackwater should change their name to BLOODY WATER!

I give. Who or what is a Manichea? I tried to find it on the Intratubes, but couldn’t come up with a definition that made sense.
Stan @ 280
Manichea is a play on Manichean, which means to view the world strictly in terms of black and white, right and wrong with no nuance or shades of gray.
