The Web site identified different types of terrorists, and included a list of groups it believed could spawn terrorists. The list also included environmentalists, animal rights advocates and abortion opponents.

Hmmm.

As in three of the past four years, I work in an LGBT-focused clinic.

Since 1996, I’ve provided medical care and organized medical services (and fundamental logistics) for peaceful animal rights, environmental, and anti-war groups, their protests, and protesters.

All I ever wanted was to keep the forests vertical so the rivers would stay wet and the steelhead and salmon could return.

The point is that that paranoia has just now morphed into the terrorist bogeyman and everyone and everything is seen as a terrorist threat to America. National lunacy really gets tired.

The authoritarian/paranoid republicans have been interested in “tagging” what they perceive as “subversive” groups since the days of McCarthy and COINTELPRO under Nixxon. With the advent of Darth Cheney they got carte blanche to go forth and fill out their lists with everyone from Athiests to Zoroastrians with the largest part of their bell curve of paranoia filled with Islamic folks and card-carrying members of MoveOn.

It’s no surprise that the republicans want to spy on their fellow Americans who are not their “Fellow Travelers” (lol), it’s what they do and have always done. Cheney was pissed because Congress correctly legislated away the ability (so they thought) of an unchecked/uncheckable Legislative branch post Watergate. Now it’s time to piss him off again.

The authoritarian/paranoid republicans have been interested in “tagging” what they perceive as “subversive” groups since the days of McCarthy and COINTELPRO under Nixxon. I loved Greenwald’s article on this, except for one thing: he used the wrong word in calling this myth-making. Its much more sinister than that.

The Republicans got where they are by learning the techniques of disinformation, propaganda, and Big Lie. Per the Wikipedia:

Unlike propaganda and Big Lie techniques designed to engage emotional support, disinformation is designed to manipulate the audience at the rational level by either discrediting conflicting information or supporting false conclusions.

The Republicans “got smart” about these techniques through their think tanks that flourished under Newt Gingrich. Democrats need to get smart about these things not to use them, but to learn how to counter them quickly, and effectively. As it is, we let these lies fester in the public mind until they take root.

Howard Dean has professed a desire to sponsor Democratic think tanks. Perhaps a curriculum on de-fanging disinformation, propaganda, and Big Lies is in order?

For example, the Swift-boat thing should have been a one week story. But Kerry’s campaign was clueless about how to deal with it, and it contributed to his defeat. Democrats are in a “Ground Hog Day” situation where they are condemned to live the day over and over again until they get it right. THIS needs to be the year that we get it right.
