If you can watch this and still be in a bad mood, I don't know what else I can do for you.
This collage of someone's home movie clips made me go all sniffly and I don't even know who these people are.
Lyrics below the fold.
This Will Be Our Year
The warmth of your love
is like the warmth of the sun
and this will be our year
took a long time to come
don't let go of my hand
now darkness has gone
and this will be our year
took a long time to come
and I won't forget
the way you held me up when I was down
and I won't forget the way you said,
"Darling I love you"
You gave me faith to go on
Now we're there and we've only just begun
This will be our year
took a long time to come
The warmth of your smile
smile for me, little one
and this will be our year
took a long time to come
You don't have to worry
all your worried days are gone
this will be our year
took a long time to come
and I won't forget
the way you held me up when I was down
and I won't forget the way you said,
"Darling I love you"
You gave me faith to go on
Now we're there and we've only just begun
and this will be our year
took a long time to come
Yeah we only just begun
yeah this will be our year
took a long time to come

EPU’d :
Took you guys long enough to notice.
Gawd.
I have no idea how that happened…I’m usually an hour behind all of you. Whoa.
thanks trex. i love you!!!!! anne
TRex @ 6
You got us! ;-)
TRex @ 6
I was busy with my news hunt. MANY links at the end of the last thread.
The best part of the whole video is when the Dad turns up the radio and starts dancing, then the Mom does an awkward kind of spazzy dance and cracks up laughing.
Actually, these people look an awful lot like my parents did.
Sorry, TRex. We were up to our hip waders in Blues downstairs.
TRex @ 6
Busted. Got too much into the music.
TRex @ 6
‘66 waz my Year!!! Some of that video looked suspiciously like my old family ‘Super 8′ shorts!!! ;)
TRex @ 11
Nostalgia for sure. My Mom had that whole 60’s Jackie Kennedy thing going on, too!
Suzanne @ 12
True, M’dear, I’m still crying in my beer!!!
My mom really did look like Jackie Kennedy. In 1964 she wore her hair in a french twist and the resemblance was startling.
Very sweet. Although those guns make me a little nervous…..
Sure makes me feel my age—I remember all that stuff.
CTuttle @ 16
aw man
*sniffle**honk**g*
Blue Dido, I know what you mean (as I approach 47!)
No politics, no video? Back down.
TRex @ 6
sorry, we were in Chi-town for a moment there.
thanks for the post :)
TribeScribe @ 19
Touche, TS!!! :P
For those of you who caught my last post downstairs, that was like father, here is like son.

FOO FIGHTERS!! FOO FIGHTERS!! FOO FIGHTERS!!
*starts to pogo furiously*
Why did the Senate Intelligence committee release its report on Friday before a three-day weekend? These newly majoritized Democrats have a thing or two to learn about media messaging — why treat this report like it’s trash being taken out?
DrDick, did you ever see Stevie Ray Vaughan play live? I saw him in ‘89, the year before he left us, and Voodoo Chile was definitely one of the highlights.
TeddySanFran @ 28

No. Unfortunately I never did, though I love his music.

And now, back to the classics.

Dave Grohl is the man. And he grew up around here. Props to the local boy!
LoudounLib @ 20
LL, I’m a few months into 47, and when I see old movies like this, I think both (a) how old-fashioned they all look and (b) how modern, groovy, and completely fabulous they looked at the time.
CTuttle @ 33
No shit. That is Bernard Allison, Luther’s boy. Some mighty strong genes in that family.
I am exhausted. Turning in. See you all tomorrow night.
g’nite TB
Good night Betsy, rest well and sweet dreams!
Blue Dido @ 36
Mere youngsters! I hit the double nickle this year. I graduated high school in 1970 and vicariously participated in the summer of love (or at least in the biochemical enhancements thereof) in 1968.
TexBetsy @ 38
Night Betsy. Sleep well.
TSF, was that the Friday Nite News Dump, Holiday Weekend Version?
g’nite TB. pain free sleep wishes
nite TB sleep well!
Thanks y’all
DrDick, I am firmly convinced that I was born too late. If I’d been born just a few years earlier, I’d have been doing the same things right along with you!
DrDick @ 24
Bernard played at a freind’s son’s wedding dance in St. Paul 5-6 years ago. The bride was/is his manager. Sadly, I missed it. But did hear his father at hot joint in EDP’s town in ‘73. And Sam Lay, Elvin B. and many others I was too stoned to remember.
If i was capable of pogoing around to the Foos i would. Love them boys soooo much.
Just deciding on how much longer i want to stay upright and what i want to watch in the meantime.

One of the great joys of living in Chicago (and two blocks from a blues club) is that I got to see most of the current Chicago blues acts up close and personal.
Graduated in ‘72 with lots of trips to SF – I was banned from Berkeley by my wise father. He, however, thought SF was ok.
I was lucky I had my juvenile record sealed several years before I applied at the PD.
CTuttle @ 52
Junior remains one of the all time greats!
DrDick @ 34
Now, that gives me a cold feeling.
;>)
Suzanne @ 50
No Beer??? Is there any in the other place??? ;)
Suzanne @ 56
aren’t we all!!

Suzanne @ 56
I was lucky that I never got caught. For what I was doing in the late 60s and early 70s, you could do serious time in Okie land.
TribeScribe @ 51
My poor Mom spent the Summer of Love standing by her premature twin babies’ isolets praying we wouldn’t die as my Dad tried to struggle through the bureaucratic nightmare that was coming home from Viet Nam for a family emergency. Not much acid dropping and hanging at Haight Ashbury in my family.
But hey, look! We all lived happily ever after.
DrDick,
well, I had a bird’s-eye-view of all the fun: my parents were grad students at Berkeley in the 60s, and so as a child I observed all kinds of things going on in Oakland & Berkeley. They say if you can remember the 60s, you weren’t there—not so true for kids. We had many very interesting people coming & going through our house. From my perspective—and remember, I was a little girl—they were all so much more interesting when they weren’t stoned. But it was a very lively town. We moved to Santa Cruz when I was about 10; it was a sleepy Republican retirement village at the time. I thought I had died & gone to Eternal Boredom. (In time, it caught up, so to speak.)
Mere child at 47! Tell it to my arthritic joints. (And I won’t even speak of how my students—among whom I include grad students—consider me to be virtually prehistoric.) But you give me hope of something to look forward to in another 8 years.
Another Chicago classic.

TRex, 4 days to your birthday?
Speaking of the sixties, Tucker Carlson was born in EssEff in May 1969 — I wonder if he was a summer of love, acid in the womb baby?
TribeScribe @ 66
Since I am no longer bound by the “you see it you have to write it rule” regarding collisions, I’m opting for the one of the bike crashing. Just because I don’t have to write the paper on it :)
DrDick, I see your Magic Slim and I’ll raise you a Little Milton
Dr. Dick, since you’re a Chicago kinda guy, you’ll have to make recommendations as to hot spots for YearlyKos.
Here is another of my favorites (though not from Chicago).
DD@41, I just caught that ‘biochemical enhancements’, you certainly dropped by, didn’t ya?!! 707!!!
TeddySanFran @ 68
It would explain a great deal.

Uh, why, yes, it is just four days, now.
Every year around this time, I start to get jumpy and anxious. Dunno why.
Actually, I do know why. My ex was a NIGHTMARE on any kind of holiday or special occasion. He always seemed to find new and diabolical ways to hurt my feelings, then get defensive, and then we’d have a giant fight.
It was like, oh, I’m crying, it must be Christmas. Wheeee. Fucking Christmas.
And people wonder why I’m not just leaping into a new relationship.
Loo Hoo. @ 71
Yes, Yes, please do.
Am pondering another visit to the windy city.

TribeScribe @ 76
Y’all are positively evil!!!
Take a deep breath, TRex. It will fade, eventually. My oldest girl (the engaged to the coastie one) still has a hard time with August. She was with a guy for 4 years that every year, in August, around HIS birthday, would decide he wanted to be single and would break up with her. The 4th year in a row that it happened she told him to keep walking. She still is twitchy around that month but no longer is cranky. I figure by the time the wedding rolls around next May, that will be gone too.
Loo Hoo. @ 71
Weel, it has been 9 years since I lived there, but hopefully it hasn’t changed too much. For blues, the Kingston Mines and Blues on north Halsted St, Buddy Guy’s place downtown, & Koko Taylor’s place. The Double Door (the Stones opened the Steel Wheels tour there) or anything else in Wicker Park for rock. More good food (of every kind you can imagine) than you can shake a stick at. Really depends on what you are into.
Some people have a difficult time with days organized around someone else’s pleasure. They are programmed to sabotage it. For example, the fiance got food poisoning last year. He licked the bowl he made my cake in, and the raw egg made him sick.
This year (this weekend!) I get my revenge by contracting the cold/fever from hell.
Somehow I think we need to call a truce….
Suzanne @ 77
Oh, no, Mum and Dad are quite well set up, thank you. They’re quite the little smug Rethuglican pod family. If Tucker rebelled, it was, like, brown loafers with a black belt or drinking red wine with fish or something.
He was born with a silver foot in his mouth.
Did someone say Koko Taylor?
TRex @ 84
Bad acid strikes again.
TRex @ 84
But he had a tough time graduating from college. When you have that kinda money and can’t buy a degree, there’s a coupla marbles missing upstairs. No offense to any on the board, but Trinity (where Tucker couldn’t graduate) is a pretty safe school, too.
LoudounLib @ 85
Oh, YEAH!

Any chance that the Intelligence committee did it today so that it could be amplified for the Sunday papers?

Amen, Brother TSF!

Damn, our ’soul’ brothers and sistahs can belt em out!!!
Oh, being a Republican is all about being a C student, aggressively mediocre. Think about when you were in college, how if you just went to class and did none of the reading and crammed for tests, you could coast by with a C. That’s exactly how our President is running the country. He’s just going through the motions, learning nothing, incurious, skipping the research and the paperwork.
The August 6th PDB. He skimmed it, really thinking about riding his bike or clearing brush or whatever. BIN LADIN DETERMINED TO STRIKE IN THE U.S. it said.
“Heh, well, I know his cousins and they’re good people. Hey, Harriet, tell somebody in there to bring me another bowl of Cocoa Puffs! I love them things!”
Katrina, looked at it from a plane, snoozed through all the warnings, blamed his frat brothers for keeping him out all night before the final. “Hey, man, it was Drink or Drown Night at Mickey’s!”
C Student.
The problem with a C Student President is you end up with a failing country.
And now a man who combines both of my passions, anthropology and the blues.
TSF, I believe that DOJ is going to have to be recused from the DOJ Civil Service investigation.
DrDick @ 41
I graduated in 1970 too! Got Bob Dylan and related activities in 1968 as well. We’re total blood sister/brothers!
Suzanne @ 100
I think the DOJ is going to have to be recused period. These people have irreparably damaged one of the finest law enforcement agencies in the world.
What’d I miss?

Corey Harris is a renaissance man.
You missed some fine blues, GSD. And the secret to whirled peas.
LOL Suzanne, reminds me of a favorite bumper sticker from back in the day — visualize whirled peas.

I take my cranky stuffy fevered head back to bed now.
See you pups on the morrow; sleep well!!

Night TSF get well soon.
I’m listenin’ to Watermelon Slim as I write.
Sounds good.
Get to do some backreading and blues bopping.
Oh yeah, also apparently the Surrender Monkies have invaded the Whitehouse and they have decided to tell Al Qaeda that they are reducing troop levels in 2008.

Don’t forget they stole the elections.
They didn’t pick Jebby cause he’s too smart.

But he was in the perfect place to aid&abet.

g’night Teddy, feel better!
TSF, I hope you feel better soon.
persiflage @ 113
Yeah, I definitely like him as well and have several CDs (I’m a sucker for slide guitar).
time to say good night from here, too, as it’s after 2 AM (yikes!)
Thanks for the blues fest!
TribeScribe @ 115
The real problem is that is the “Gentleman’s C”. Which means, “We can’t flunk the dumb ass fucker, because his daddy’s richer than Croesus and it’s worth our jobs.”
Dr. Dick, since you are a slide sucker, have you ever seen the Robert Randolph Family Band. That man can slide like Jimi. Awesome. Saw them open for Clapton a couple years ago. Fine fine blues band and awesome musicians – they are family, brothers and cousins iirc.
Blues? I used to watch this guy play his guitar with his teeth while laying down in the middle of a full tilt boogie dance floor, at the Saloon, the oldest bar in San Francisco, North Beach…oh yea
Great links Dr Dick! (you wouldn’t happen to know the name of Jr Wells very first album would you?
Happy Blogoversary TRex..(isn’t it close, anyway?)
TSF, Feel better soon, amigo.
LoudounLib @ 119
Night LL. Rock on!

DrDick, you know it!

It was May 15th.

I definitely know what they went through. My youngest grandson was born 2 months premature and spent two years in and out of emergency rooms. He is 9 and fine now, but it was real scary for a while.
DrDick @ 120
He coulda had a GED, for all they care, imo.
He was ripe for propping up and
41 and his buddies we’re anywhere near
being finished. They still aren’t.
Here’s to hoping we can ‘cage’ them.
Sent a letter to the DoJ and it came back
“undeliverable” *groan*
And a little more from the source.
Alright, gang, I’m turning in.
See you, uh, Sunday, I guess.
Good night!
TRex, I was commenting earlier (last thread i think) about how it has only been a year since Jane left you the keys to the blog when Jane and Redd (CHS) went to YKos 1.
Time certainly passes fast when one hangs out with a therapod.

Jr Wells first album where even the name of it is one great mystery And yet, I am still determined to listen to it someday.
Suz – I really like Robert Randolf and the Family Band, seen them many times. I think they just put out a new album for the first time in years.
DrDick @ 136
DrD,
I like the spin you’re in :)
great stuff!

Ahhh, the party’s breaking up!!! Nite, TRex!!!

Eureka Springs @ 144
They are definitely good, as well. Have you ever listened to Robert Bradley’s Blackwater Surprise or Eric Gale?
Fantastic! Beautiful balmy weather the river covered with a green canopy and crystal clear waters..) Since we hit the rapids before the weekend we had the river all to ourselves.
Sweet, ES. Sounds like a great trip.
Eureka Springs @ 151
You must not have had any Deep River Blues. (youtube link)
Eureka Springs @ 151
I know the feeling. hthis is what I did last spring. This is the Lochsa River in northern Idaho, just over the border, with mostly class 3-4 rapids and a few 5s, just to make your hair stand on end.
DrDick @ 82
Thanks! Took notes. Will you and the (?) be going?
DrDick @ 150
Sweet stuff DD.
and with a little wing, I’m out.
nite all.
Loo Hoo. @ 155
Nope.
TeddySanFran @ 83
Oh, Teddy. I don’t want you to be sick. Take care.
Here is a little better Eric Gales.
Back when I was young, I used to whitewater raft. I have done the Stanislaus (pre dam), the American, The Merced (out of Yosemite)and one I can’t remember right now. Once I started working at the PD, I got my adrenaline fixes at work instead of on the river.
I really wanted to do the middle fork of the Snake and, of course, the Colorado.
g’nite, TS

Nite, TS! I appreciate the concern!!!
PS, if YKos too pricey, there’s always
Second Life (virtual attendance)
YKSL
CTuttle @ 162
anytime :}
Both are new names to me.. Eric has a sweet touch, thanks.
Suzanne @ 160
There are stretches of the Clearwater and Salmon Rivers in northern Idaho which are a white water rafter’s dream. Wild, rough, unspoiled, and limited access. They actually have a lottery every year and only allow a handfull of rafters to go down.
DrDick @ 166
Some nice ones north of the border, from ya, the Peace and Fraser rivers provide some nice rides!!!
I live on the Kings River in NW Arkansas, which happens to be the longest north-bound running river in North America. It’s just a few miles to the Buffalo National river and half a dozen other choice waterways for floaters of all makes and models.. Fortunately it’s not overrun with people most of the time so everything is pretty clean and peaceful and a whole lot of fun.
DrDick @ 92
Excellent!
Ok, I’m going to have to wrap my evening up early. I have one confirmed showing tomorrow that I have to get ready for. Friggin Holiday Weekend don’t stop real estate weekends.

I’ll guess those were some generous C’s.

For a white man, he’s got soul!!!
Rest well Suzanne… Don’t let those four pesky words (you missed a spot) get to ya…
Eureka Springs @ 168
I know that area. I used to live in Tahlequah, OK (my son was born there). Fortunately, most of the rivers here are in pretty good shape. The Lochsa gets a fair bit of traffic, but is still clean and not overly congested. The Blackfoot River near Missoula (featured, though not actually shown in the film A River Runs through It), however, is overwhelmed with rafters and kayakers, not to mention every tourist fisherman in the area. I try to avoid it as much as possible. Fortunately, there are many other possibilities.
Again, no Utube, but I leave ya with Will Ray singing Santa Cruzin
Suzanne @ 170

And here is a little of Robert Randolph.

Hi pups -
anyone else hear the crickets tonight?
is this thing on?
Hmmm…seeing as only the crickets and I are up, this is an ideal moment to announce my candidacy as for President of the World Bank.
Ahem
Crickets and slumbering Lakefolk:
I’m inspired by the protean career of my colleague Dr. Frist; he’s helped me realize I’ve been a vocational stick in the mud.
As Dr. Frist is my new career avatar, I’ll emulate his people skills by declaring for the postion he may be seeking.
I formally declare my candidacy for World Bank President.
crickets
Why should Shrub nominate me as World Bank Prez?
The World has a fever, and needs a doctor. Even Shrub knows this – that’s why he nominated a doc to take care of the World. Like Dr. Frist, I’m a physician.
Like Dr. Frist, my family has a long history in health care – my mom’s uncle was a country doc, and both my parents go to doctors. (Unlike Dr. Frist, my family did not have a huge HMO that had to pay 1.7 billion in fines and charges for defrauding Medicare.)
Like Dr. Frist, I’m interested in medicine at a distance. I’m curious about how telemedicine could increase access to psychiatric assessments in rural areas. Dr. Frist is interested in increasing access to neurologic assessments via Senatorial declaration.
I’m interested in the World Bank. Along with many others, I helped to organize and prepare for the 2000 IMF/ World bank protests (I co-coordinated the medical collective). Dr Frist is interested in the World as a bank. After the Bushies took power, his family’s massively criminal enterprise was allowed to keep billing Medicare (and keep operating) even with conduct requiring $1.7 billion in fines. If you stiff Uncle Sam like that and still get to play, the World is your bank.
Like Dr. Frist, I brought home kitties in medical school – a kitten for my then-partner, and a kitten for me. Unlike Dr. Frist, we loved our kitties – they lived with us until they died of natural causes.
Since it’s dark right now, I won’t think any more about Dr. Frist and his cats. I will go to love and cherish the ones who have shared my home for many years.
Thanks for being there at the start of my campaign for World Bank President. Now matter how it turns out, you can say you there at the beginning.
Assuming that crickets give interviews.
(And can remain up out of the cats’ reach.)
Dr. Kirk,
You seem eminently qualified. What position would your lover/partner fill at the World Bank?
Aloha TRex–Nice to see; made me remember my two nephews who died at 19. Miss those tall boys. Made me realize how hard it is for anyone who loses someone in Iraq or Afghanistan. Peace Out,
Good morning to anyone who’s up and about. (I’m astonished that I am.)

Mornin’ all!
Morning Firepups!!

U.S. Rejects G-8 Climate Proposal
Representatives from the world’s leading industrial nations met the past two days in Heiligendamm, Germany, to negotiate over German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s proposed statement, which calls for limiting the worldwide temperature rise this century to 3.6 degrees Fahrenheit and cutting global greenhouse gas emissions to 50 percent below 1990 levels by 2050.
New thread, pull up a chair…
The video is bittersweet for me. It reminds me of how much America has changed for the worse.
Wonderful video. Looks exactly like my old neighborhood.
OK GO does a remarkable remake of that song off the Future Soundtrack of America. This album also helps out progressive candidates so check it out.
