Could someone just explain this to me? From the DCCC:
Breaking News: Because of your help, the House just passed legislation that will go to the White House that includes critical issues Democrats have been fighting for including: canceling the President's blank check in Iraq, raising the minimum wage, and increased funding for military health care and veterans' benefits, and help for victims of Hurricane Katrina.
THEN:
Two weeks ago, President Bush vetoed our legislation to demand accountability in Iraq and declared he would only sign a bill without any accountability for his management of the war.NOW:
Now, the President has agreed to accountability and reporting provisions. That means for the first time we can force the President to be held accountable for his endless war in Iraq. We canceled the President's blank check in Iraq.
If the legislation is so very wonderful, then how come the head of the DCCC, Chris Van Hollen, voted against it?

AAAARGHHH!!! TS!!! TRex!!!!
I’m hoping there are LOTS of sleepless congress critters tonight. And tomorrow nite. And every forking nite until our troops are home.
nuthin but love 4 ya baybee!
TS You know the routine…..
I let downstairs know CT
Sounds like Rahm Vader graduated from the Alberto Gonzales Academy of Candid Political Rhetoric.
I think Rahm is still pulling the strings at DCCC.
What an insult.
Good night, now. Really.
DCCC doesn’t want to lead America. Bush has broken government in so many areas, that I think, the DCCC is scared of being responsible for either fixing all of these areas, or being in charge when the after-affects really start hitting us (economy, terrorism, and anti-American sentiment worldwide, plus runaway gov’t organizations (DHS) which they have no freaking control over)
Can’t sleep – damn police helicopter has been hovering for the last half-hour…
Van Hollen is my rep. The other MD Dems (Hoyer, Mikulski and Cardin) aren’t getting a penny out of me this next cycle.
CTuttle @ 8
would have been the post right after Suz.
it’s the economy…. :}
Can’t sleep – damn police helicopter has been hovering for the last half-hour…
The search continues for the bird…
I just want to call their offices and say, “WHY?? Why are you STILL letting the Republicans tell you what to do?! WHY??!!”
Suzanne @ 6
They better need R*Quip for the rest of their lives… That was the sorriest display of courage in the Modern Era!!! Whew, a parliamentary style political aparatchik is so desperately needed in our country!!!
Thought police already here
If spineless turns one into an invertebrate, what do they call the cartilage or whatever that invertebrates have in the spine’s place? I never took biology, but if there’s a word for that tissue, then that’s what we should be telling these congresspeople they lack – the stuff that holds an ivertebrate together. Am I rambling yet?
Because it’s a fucking disgrace and all of the Dems know it, whether they voted for this betrayal or not.
TRex @ 16
T, I’mmmm sssoooo feeling Yaaaa!!!!!!
Attempted Piracy.. Hahahahahhaa!!
Permit more wiretaps for piracy investigations. Wiretaps would be authorized for investigations of Americans who are “attempting” to infringe copyrights.
There are lots of angry phone calls that will be hitting the local offices come first thing tomorrow.
People are pissed and tired of being lied to, over and over. By everyone, AGAG, Boosh, congress critters up for election.
I believe the tolerance level has been lowered and the forking Dems didn’t realize it today. Tomorrow morning, they are gonna get hit in the face with a hard case of reality. Angry voters on Memorial Day weekend.
Hi. Just wanted to stop by and register my disgust with the spine-deficient Democrats as well.
FEH! A pox on your families!
I’ll say this for the DCCC, their timing is as bad as their understanding of the electorate.
Goodnight all, and thanks for the chuckles, TRex. I think we needed them tonight.
(waving to jacqrat)
Well said cc – I don’t want them leading us in any event. Pelosi surprised me and if Boxer thinks she if off the hook by voting against the resolution I’d sooner forgive Pelosi…..at least she didn’t kiss up to HoJo.
Good night all – tanks for the good memories on this otherwise sad day in our history.
((((((((((firepupsforever!))))))))))
Suzanne @ 22
I had commented in an earlier thread, the critters knew they had to pass it now, before the Break, because they knew they were gonna hear but good from their constituents, rightfully so!!! But, now, doubly so!!!!
cancer_cures @ 21
wouldn’t they have already had to
tapped one’s wires to determine this?

*loverly*
I’m going to be headed to bed soon myself. TRex, thanks for the extra, extra duty in putting up 3 posts tonight. The humor was sorely needed after a totally crappy day.
How many days until your birthday, big fella?
Well, I am delighted to say that my Rep voted NO on the war funding bill. Our Senators may have split, but I haven’t seen the roll call yet.
In any case, I’m gonna send my Rep, Neil Abercrombie, a thank you.
Too bad there were so many other spineless ones. Maybe we should call them “Noodle-backs”.

Cujo359 @ 24
They had to know what would be coming. When I got mine, I first thought that the gall the ReThugParty has might have rubbed off. Then I realized they are taking our temperture.
Of course, I unsubscribed and left them a little gift, as did many, I imagine.
Yes, Lord, it’s all their fault! I found the same stupid e-mail in my box a little while ago. Normally I just prune my gaze, looking for the actual business, but this little bundle of packets got sent back as an unsubscribe. Maybe I’ll check ‘em out later, if they learn to behave.
(waving)
HI, Suz!
A big, fat letter to the editor-writing party is what this place needs.
And refreshments. I’m hungry.

Hi Suzanne. On behalf of all decent Californians, may I say how ashamed we should be for treating Law Enforcement professionals as if they were returning Iraq vets… wait… sorry.
Every single congress critter, even those who voted no, need to hear our individual anger, with letters to the editors, letters to the critters, phone calls to the critter’s local offices.
Each one of us. I want their forking switchboards overwhelmed with people calling in to voice their rage.
How forking dare they cave!
(trying to not cuss so much)
Good night, guys. I’m off to bed. Juan Carlos has commenced to grumble and claw the furniture.
How come a creature with a brain smaller than a plum has complete control of my heart and soul?
I am an entirely different kind of pussy-whipped.
Night!
I have pretty much put everything I have into the anti-war effort. Sold my house and moved to Lyon and quit speaking with about half my family. I went to every peace rally I could find, wrote my “representatives”, made countless phone calls, broken up family gatherings and parties with my angry harangues against the warmongering boobs that apparently run this planet.
Now my adopted country is turning to the right and racism is rampant – every hope and illusion I have so carfully cultivated is dashed – ground into the grime by a totally irresponsible elite class and there is nothing more to be done but take to the streets.
In the ’60s and early ’70s, we had leaders with a spine – alot of them. there are no more giants – just a bunch of lonely voices crying in the wilderness.
I will be dust before we end this war, I am now convinced. It’s just too good a deal for the corporatist jackals.
Jacqrat @ 33
amen to that! i feel a need to do something productive with all the anger.

Like wiretapping my phone is going to reveal what wwwDOTfreemp3sDOTcom or however I am pirating music and videos. honestly, not only is this new crime CLUELESS and INFRINGING, but completely WORTHLESS in preventing piracy. I mean, unless if I discussed with best friend Jeb over a phone, ‘Hey buddy, go to wwwDOTbootlegsDOTcom’ and they consider this an attempt at piracy. But is this effective? Is this a valid use of state resources?
thanks, newtonusr.

Sleepless in New England, trolling for audio?
TREX **** Rahm always spins spinelessly. Why did they fold so damn fast? Suzanne’s right. Lots of disgusted phone calls and email ahead.
Ed*ard Teller @ 18
Not at all (she said after 10 minutes wrestling with network-gator). It’s called the notochord. The parties or Party in question ain’t got none.
looks like we are back up. servers hiccuped there for a bit.
I can’t remember what it is that invertebrates have in lieu of a spine that connects all their nerves, but I know that the invertebrates include slugs, cockroaches, leeches, and parasitic worms. Sounds like the right group.
Thanksfor the info. Not a notochord in the bunch.
cancer_cures @ 43
think of wiret*pping as beyond ‘phone calls

and piracy is a mostly a pretext.
Suzanne @ 49
Something happened! It took awhile for my evenin greet to T to register!!!
mutzali @ 50
yeah, what a family.
The only way these arseholes are gonna grow a set is if we force them to. Overwhelming pressure brought at the local level. By individual constituents. Overwhelm their phone systems. Have the mailman groaning from the weight of the hand-written letters delivered to their locals offices.
Local means votes to these fools. Hit them where it hurts – locally. Find out where your congress critter is going to be speechifying this weekend – you know they will have already committed to attending various Memorial Day services.
Show up. Let them know you are pissed about this and that you vote. Dangle that carrot – your vote.
Isn’t it nice, just when the Democratic noodle-backs have given Pres. Bush everything he wanted, a new poll comes out showing
Oddly enough, Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton may be the main winners. They get to have their cake (Funding for the war) and eat it too (casting a useless vote against the war, thereby redeeming themselves slightly).
Bob in HI
CT, fingers and toes crossed the tech guys backstage fixed it with more than bailing wire and duct tape.
The servers were down for a second time but are supposed to be fixed now.
slugs, cockroaches, leeches, and parasitic worms
These poor creatures do not deserve the comparison with the congresscritters. They did not choose to be spineless.

I’m not totally getting what the rule vote fuckery was about but it bears repeating that you have to check that also because these arseholes are trying to pull that Alito crap again where they voted badly on the rule vote and then were able to vote “no” when it didn’t matter.
newtonusr @ 46
haha, i wish.
i’m so pissed off i can’t sleep.

that’s what has me so over-the-top-pissed-off.
we had just seven house dems vote to block the bill for funding.
seven.
and they want us to think there were 140.
bullshit.
Thanks, newtonusr. I was also modding this afternoon and didn’t get to check out the links and such.
That is exactly what I am talking about.

BTW, my sleep habits have changed yet again (after you introduced me to the Internet Archive); you pointed me to the full audio of Coumo’s Keynote. Thanks much!
rule vote fuckery explained by scarecrow earlier today.
we had just seven house dems vote to block the bill for funding.
seven.
and they want us to think there were 140.
not only do they lie to us, but they think we are too stupid to figure out they lied.
newtonusr @ 66

newtonusr @ 70
yup.
tomorrow is letter-to-the-editor writing day…. for every dem who voted for the rule and against the bill. we’ve got to explain the fuckery to our communities.
make ‘em think twice before they do that again.
newtonusr @ 72
you’re gonna need another hard drive! (speaking from personal experience).
edit – when you get the chance would love some recommedation on some shows to download…
Not only is the vote morally bankrupt, it’s stupid and even dangerous in a psychological way. What d’ya suppose a character like Brush is likely to do with articles like this:
Congress Bows To Bush, Oks Iraq Funds (Guardian/AP)
I mean, we correctly deride those who refuse to do the correct thing out of macho pride, but this is not only giving him the one thing he still cares about, but on the terms that matter to him as much as the thing itself.
This blunder is as bad for the Democrats as the war itself was for the country. I’m really left breathless by this one.
newtonusr @ 62
This really is confusing. Sirota identifies the key vote as
Almost all Democrats voted FOR this bill, almost all Republicans voted AGAINST it.
I’m not sure that Sirota is right on this. What he writes about the vote on H RES 438 is
If Sirota’s analysis is correct, why did the Republicans vote against it?
Curiouser and curiouser.
Bob in HI
On a better (?) note for today, Schumer, Feinstein & the unstoppable Sheldon Whitehouse had a presser today on AbuG and the “No Confidence vote”. It was very good as an update on where they think we are on the USA’s.
Interesting: Schumer and Feinstein seem to hang on Senator Whitehouse’s every word. They clearly feel that he makes them look good, and they stick him out front and let him just roll. He is clearly the best legal mind on SJC, and they will probably keep him out front, punching away at DOJ. His passionate disgust at the politization of Main Justice and beyond may be their best weapon.

selise @ 67
Thanks for that, but he hasn’t attached bill numbers to his A, B & C, so we can’t tell who did what.
Bob in HI
If Sirota’s analysis is correct, why did the Republicans vote against it?
Because that was the deal that was negotiated. Both sides could claim they “tried” to do what was right to their base but were defeated. The Rethugs could claim they tried to stop the pork by voting against the rule that tied it to the funding bill.
hey SteveA.
Bob Schacht @ 82
Bob, I have seen it on that House rollcall register that no one can find. Will pass it along when I dig it back up, but mw the vote numbers were 418 (rule), 424 (supplemental), and 425 (pork).
Can’t sleep either, sleep cycle out of whack. Not that this disgusting vote helped at all…
newtonusr (80) — the SJC may be the one thing that saves our asses, with aircover from HJC and Oversight Committees.
They have Bush teed up right now, they’ve actually cracked the White House firewall with the Comey testimony. There are only a couple of chess moves between them and asking for criminal prosecution of the White House.
But will it happen before September? Will we have a new DAG and a new USAG by then? Will the Republicans be forced to concur that reauthorization of the Office of Independent Counsel is necessary?
I can only hope so — but we can improve our odds if we make it extremely painful for Republicans and moderate Democrats between now and then.
Bob Schacht @ 82

The GOP voted against the rule because they wanted this to go up for debate. They knew they had the votes to get this war bill passed and they were happy to debate openly. They relish a chance to wax poetic about heroism and patriotism, all in advance of an assured victory. Then they could still vote against the pork.
The Dems voted for the rule because it allowed them to vote against the Iraq bill without actually stopping Bush from getting his money.

Whitehouse has been amazing. He was amazing during the Gonzales hearings and he was outstanding during the recent FISA hearings. He was excellent yesterday, both voting against this shitty bill and talking about Gonzales’ improprieties.
You could tell that Schumer and DiFi knew he was a rockstar and stepped back. When you get Schumer handing off the mic to you, you know you are kicking ass.

Part of the fuckery here is that 424 and 425 have the same title, and are in reference to the same bill, and they differ only in the “Question,” which has the (un)enlightening “Concur in Senate Amendment with House Amendment No. 1″ (424) and “Concur in Senate Amendment with House Amendment No. 2″ (425)
So, um, which amendment is which?
Bob in HI
newtonusr, I was among those who thought “sure, whatever” when people were talking about running somebody against Chaffee. I wasn’t that sure it would work, but it was worth a shot. When it did happen, I was thrilled because it helped flip the Senate.
I had no idea that it would be such an amazing gift. I figured that on this day — especially today — I’d be thinking how awesome it is that Jim Webb is in the Senate.
Nope, Whitehouse is the rock star of the class of 2006.
Alfred Kelgarries @ 104
That’s what Cheney said, that is, if Chirac can profiteer, why can’t I? Unfortunately for Cheney, he doesn’t have the French knack for discretion, had to do it the American way — in florid excess.
What would be very interesting is whether there are any deposits to Chirac from what are ultimately American sources. Are you thinking what I’m thinking?
Dover Bitch @ 111
Admittedly, he’s probably pretty safe in RI, so he can be straight.
But his continued drilling-down on the issue of DOJ criminality – his very close exam of Sampson, Gonzales, and the USA’s on the lowering of standards @ DOJ are very forward thinking.
He’s taking a broad look at the shadow that’s been cast over the department by the suggestion that, “It’s not improper unless it is designed to interfere with a specific case” meme of AbuG. And pointing out that that very standard is used to describe obstruction of justice, and having Comey concur was just priceless. His approach has been brilliant.
I still believe Webb’s time will come, though.

Hey, Tom, Van Hollen is my rep too. I was glad to see he’d voted against the atrocity (and was also glad to learn the stupid letter wasn’t from him).
I sent back a scathing “you can’t put lipstick on THIS pig” reply — although I had to change the address, since the one that popped up when one hit “respond” was “no-reply@dccc.” Called ‘em on that piece of crap too.
I mentioned that they might want to visit the internet and see the reactions of those of us who’d worked our butts off last fall and given beyond what we could afford monetarily.
I’m not about to go Green (I still hate Naderites), but I’ll continue to give my $$$ directly, rather than to the DCCC & DSCC weasels.
Good morning, pups. It’s Bobo and Krugman in the NYT today, Bobo babbling about “quasi-religious Catholics” and Krugman writing on immigration.

I’m sorry to have to leave you on your own for breakfast this morning, but I’ve got some sort of horrible stomach thing and all I can face right now is ice water. I’m tottering back to bed… I hope you all have a MUCH better day!
I actually got a fundraising call from the DCCC yesterday and received basically the same script, and told the operator that I appreciated his efforts, but that there was no point in helping to broaden the Rahm Emmanuel Democratic majority if the current one couldn’t get us out of Iraq.
Just FYI on the DCCC fundraising letter. I was able to get a reply through to brianwolff at dccc.org without the dreaded Daemon mailer thingie bouncing me back. I told him that 6 more Americans had been killed in Iraq this morning and that I thought it was a really bad time to ask me for money seeing as how I have family over there.
I’ve been on an emotional roller coaster for more than 24 hours now. I sent Steny Hoyer a nastygram because he’s mentoring my congressman and I really think he’s the stinky shit in this deal.
SIGH. Sorry to come in here to unload and then leave for work but my heart is so heavy right now that I can’t even think straight.

Here’s how thoughtless the Pelosi-posse on here is:
The Iraqi Parliament (remember them: The source for all the GOP’s purple-fingered ecstasy?) is very close to demanding a fixed timetable for withdrawal.
Dear Firehounds:
Which “demand” do you think will have more weight?
The one at which the dems failed, yesterday, or the one that’s coming, from the Iraqis, themselves?
(If you can’t figure this one out, you ought to take a few days off from lynchmob duty.)
Hoosierville — sending good thoughts to you and yours this morning. My stepson served in Iraq, can imagine how you are feeling. It is not easy, wish there was something we could do for you and yours. But we will continue to fight to change this situation. We’ve simply too much at stake to give up the fight.
Hang in there. If you see my brothers in Kokomo or Indy, you can give ‘em a smack for me.
Trex: I think we should call them and thank them for NOT doing what the republicans WANT them to do, which is, bailing the assholes out for all the shit that will be coming down, when the troops DO start withdrawing.
Jane complained that the repubs are taunting us with “Why don’t YOU force a withdrawal?”
Any idea why they’re doing that? (wicked smileface here…)
Hint; a matter of months from now, the republicans, themselves, will HAVE to be introducing these bills, if they don’t, they will go the way of the Dodo. And, at the same time, they will be telling junior that the brush in Crawford needs cutting.
Shameless. That email was absolutely shameless. The DCCC clearly thinks we’re a bunch of fucking idiots, easily influenced by their propaganda.
We haven’t been suckered by 7 years of republican propaganda, yet they think we’re going to swallow their bullshit? Are they crazy?
I read the first few paragraphs of that email, and then immediately unsubscribed from their email list.
Good morning pups.

(I’m sure her corporate sponsors give her enough, anyway — hey, good idea, make our Congresscritters wear patches on their fancy clothes, like the NASCAR drivers do, so we know who owns them. I won’t hold my breath.)

So far as I can tell, this rule-vote protocol gives Republican congress-critters a chance to say they voted against the pork and Bush a chance to say that he had to pass the pork so that the troops wouldn’t go hungry. I can’t see that it did anything for the Democrats, one way or the other.

Now that’s a GREAT IDEA: Make the fuukin, sold-out, corrupted, conniving, lying sons-of-bitches wear patches of every corporation they’e accepted campaign funds from…
I LIKE THAT!

Yes!
And regarding the 7th comment…hmmm. I keep reading about this China & Russia emgerging thing. I just finished reading Tom Clancy’s The Bear And the Dragon (really LONG book) about the connections between economics, polictics and WAR. Although I’m an old hippie chick, I wanted to get a better view of how It All Works together. Know your enemy and all that. Scarey and strange days indeed.
So it’s true what folks have been saying. The DCCC really is full of s—.
Ironically, I received the fundraising letter in the mail yesterday from the DCCC – “No blank check”, etc…Needless to say it found its way to the bottom of the recycling bin.
I think a lot of us are channeling exactly the same reaction. The DCCC puff piece arrived in my mail box yesterday and I wrote a post almost the same as this one. DCCC gets no more money from me, but Democrats who voted against the appropriation will.
You asked, so here goes:
Last year, Van Hollen the new up and coming Congressman, tried to speak out and push for an immediate cease fire to the Israeli/Lebanon war. All he did was to send a modest letter to Rice, but did not take any side.
Shortly after the end of the war the new Congressman was taken on a trip he couldn’t refuse to Israel. Immediately upon his return he retracted everything he said in the letter, and apologized to Israel.
The brand new Congressman was then heartily rewarded for such obedience, and was named head of the DCCC.
So the answer to your question is:
He doesn’t work for us.
Yes, I got this e-mail at home last night, too, and thought, WTF?!?! I immediately unsubscribed. I hope they were flooded with unsubscribe messages.
I got that email too, and was incredulous.
Can you say, “out of touch?”
As David Sirota pointed out, don’t be too quick to praise those who voted no, because they approved the process that brought this bill, and only this bill, to a vote, with rules preventing amendments, knowing that it would pass (I’m talking to you, Nancy Pelosi).
For example, Sens. Clinton and Obama waited until the very last minute and voted no, because they figured out that a yes vote means no presidential nomination. But they didn’t lift a finger to fight the cave-in earlier in the week when it could have mattered.
