I do think we need a third party. I suggest we call it the Democratic Party. It would be nice if we had one.

I joined the Democratic Party for the first time in my life a few weeks ago. I had been a paying member of the Green Party of Alaska for 17 years. Before that, I was a Republican, but I was saved in 1982 by Jerry Falwell. Saved me from staying with the GOP, because I despised Falwell’s GodSquad the minute they began spewing their studied hatred.

The reason I left the Greens for the Democrats is because, even with abominable senior leadership, the flow of young and progressive people toward the Democrats is telling. It is beginning to show in the US House. If we can take two or three more Senate seats, the character of that closely divided body will shift markedly. I have no confidence in the Democrats’ ability to field a true progressive in the presidential race, but that is another matter.

The key reasons for staying with the progressive wing of the Democratic Party right now are that we are taking over the House – not just the Dems but the progressive, liberal Dems – and because a third party just won’t work. Not in this decade, at least.

No, that’s not right. The ability to overide is not relevant to this issue. Let Bush keep vetoing, and let the Dems say “Bush is denying funds to our troops.” because that would be the truth.

And, really, the Dems could have probably gotten away with this despicable display if they hadn’t tried to tell us (and keep trying to tell us) that this was anything but a defeat. Beginning of the end? End of a blank check? Please. Do they really think we’re that stupid?

This is a moral issue for me, and it’s why it’s a litmus test. We are over there murdering innocent people for no valid reason every single day. The Dems have, at best, said that they’re perfectly willing to let the murder continue because they’re afraid that they might suffer political consequences if they stand up for good. That, in my book, is evil. I cannot support that.

I haven’t written off the Dems entirely yet. We’ll see what the end result of this is. But then, I’m one of those independents that left the party in disgust in the ’90s. I came back to help face down the threat of BushCo, not because I have some devotion to the Democratic party. If the Democratic party cannot face BushCo down, if I cannot trust them to at least try and fight the good fight (I don’t need them to always win) then they are useless to me.

If they are trying to fight the good fight now, using some ultra-subtle tactics that are opaque to me, then I need them to at least explain what they’re doing. The explanations I’ve heard from them so far have been nothing but BS.
