Hey gang … we think the house will start on the vote shortly … the maneuvers are maneuvering and we’re watching.
not zed
Hilarious montage… that’s perfect.
On treo and train for CT, anyone watching and keeping us up to date much apreciated.
Siun @ 3
i’ve had c-span on all day waiting for iraq funding – and wasted way too much time listening to bogus lobbying and ethics floor speeches… but, i don’t want to miss the iraq votes.
I don’t get it! Ohhh…now I see from Siun’s comment it is in honor of the vote.
I’m thinking to myself, why am I sitting here watching these morons on a youtube? LOL.
love the sports analogies – just hilarious!!
Hi Siun!
bitingly apt
Excellent Vid – Perfect!
Selise … me too, R’s spouting about Abramoff, everyone playing games
I don’t even have YouTube at work, the square is blank, so for me it’s a very vague posting…
Purge the Vichy Corporatist Democrats.
Organize locally to elect those who will represent you.
Vote.
That’s how it is done, there is no other way.
Albatross @ 13
It’s a very vague youtube!
Sorry for this OT, but, I just can’t help myself, from ABC news:
As President Bush took a question Thursday in the White House Rose Garden about scandals involving his Attorney General, he remarked, “I’ve got confidence in Al Gonzales doin’ the job.”
Simultaneously, a sparrow flew overhead and left a splash on the President’s sleeve, which Bush tried several times to wipe off.
Mother nature sure has one hell of a funny bone.
Just tuned in from PA. Hotel doesn’t have CSpan but they do have wireless.
Well, Denny Green’s tirade makes much more sense in our context…

No flash? Or are they blocking YouTube completely?
Another sports analogy:

Are you serious!! I want to see that clip. I’m sure it will make it to Youtube.
watching and waiting for vote on c-span……
AZ Matt @ 22
Yes. For non-political civil service jobs.
And in the middle of all this- a new poll from CBS:
How’s the war going? Well- 23% Piss Poor 66%
Was it a mistake? No 35% Yes 61% (new record)
Clusterfuck JAR 30% approve
i propose…. that for the upcoming votes….
we’ll pay attention to the rules game-playing and take names on the critical votes.
we’ll bring sunlight to a process some politicians are trying to obscure.
and then, together, we’ll plan a response.

Yes, we did, it takes time to re-build. It doesn’t happen over one election cycle. It took the GOP 30 years to retake the house and senate. But joining a 3rd party is a recipe for failure. Our system is set up for two parties. That’s the things are.
Organize, Organize, Organize.
TRex @ 30
lol!
Don’t know if this was in the previous thread, but FWIW, Kerry says he’s voting no.
Love the bird shit story
Clusterfuck: “Did anyone get a license number?”

agreed. but the actions the dems are contemplating are asking for another “nader” moment. can’t blame third parties when the dems don’t act responsibly.

I thought it would be” “where the hell is Cheney when you need him?”
rwcole @ 38
Dick Cheney has a shotgun and he is good at shooting birds!
bird poop…now THAT’S political theater.
Donna Brazille just let Blitzer say that if Dems vote ‘no’ on the Iraq bill, they could be accused of not supporting the troops – without pointing out that that is a ludicrous argument.
IIRC, her response was “Absolutely”.
I’m saying here and now, she’s working for the other side. There is no other explanation.
I don’t know much about her personally – deep in the pockets of the MIC I’d wager.
Yes, this is a rant. I wanted to jump through the screen.

LS @ 1:44 pm -
ThinkProgress has the video clip you’re looking for: Mother Nature’s signing statement?
Gawd, Mutant, that is too scary!!!
rwcole @ 38
don’t worry, Cheney’s on the case
TRex @ 30
i want a video of that!
see, if these macho coaches can admit they screwed up bigtime, why can’t Bush?
Is the vote going on right now the vote on the Iraq supplemental funding? Does “yes” on “motion to recommit” mean “yes” on “funding the war”?
From Steve Clemons, some potentially deadly behind-the-scenes manipulations by Darth Cheney. Scary stuff.

I’m sure Secret Service caught the bird so the sadistic Shrub can waterboard it, then slowly dismember it, all the while cursing out his mother.
I called my Cong-peeps yesterday, and they all said they would vote against the supplemental. That’s Ed Markey, Ted Kennedy, and John Kerry. I actually believe them, and feel lucky that I am one of the few Americans to be accurately represented today.

hi rev!
ok mutant poodle – that laugh did me good ;>} lol sparrow is now on MW list
A portion of a letter I sent to my representative, Lynn Woolsey, who is one of the good guys.
======
An open letter to Sen. Harry Reid, Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Rep. Rahm Emanuel, Howard Dean, and other leaders of the so-called “Democratic” party:
The so-called “Democratic” party is anything but. It’s a party that doesn’t listen to its own members. Consider that for a moment. They don’t listen to the very people who put them into office. Where’s the “democracy” in that?
“Stop it,” we say.
“Patience,” you reply.
“Stop it now!” we say.
“We’ll fight another day,” you respond.
“PLEASE, PLEASE STOP IT NOW!” we say.
“This is the beginning of the end,” you answer.
“The beginning of the end,” you say? What you, our dear leaders, fail to see is that the beginning of the end started a long time ago. Make no mistake. There’s the end there, right down the road, just ahead. It doesn’t take much vision, at all, to see it. It’s not the end you speak of, namely the Iraq war. Rather, it’s the end of such quaint notions as democracy, freedom, justice, and national integrity and respect. Not to mention economic disaster.
We’re spiraling downward toward total catastrophe, ever faster, and rendering ourselves less and less able to recover. We’re doing dumb things in spades, deliberately, again and again. We don’t listen to the brave few who stand up for what’s right. We seek counsel from the creators of the fetid mess.
And, stunningly, you supposed keepers of the democratic flame keep accepting this as OK. OK enough to put off standing up to the repugnant bully for another day. Or week. Or month.
Here’s a tip, ladies and gentlemen. When you’re in a fight, words are not enough. Actions are the real indicators of heart. Actions shine light on words and expose them as either hypocrisy or conviction. You have to take some bold stands, like now. You might even consider throwing some punches of your own. It’s not easy, I know. But, one thing is clear. This is what it will take.
But, no. “Now’s not the time,” you say. Far be it for you to be the ones to take a defining stand now. Well, you might not think that we aren’t noticing that you keep running from the fights, but you would be wrong. “Not wise, you say.” “Keep your powder dry,” you say. “Live to fight another day,” you say.
“Fuck you,” I say.
It’s not the beginning of the end that we want. It’s the end of the end that we want. A horrible, grotesque end is well on its way. And, all the while, you’re on the sidelines, alternately cheering on the perpetrators, then shaking your heads and saying “Tsk, tsk.”
I invite you to listen to or read the transcript of Keith Olbermann’s stately Special Comment expressed on his Countdown show today (5/23/2007) on MSNBC. He expresses my outrage most articulately. Wake up, Congresspersons and Senators!!! Wake up, goddammit. Enough is enough. Don’t you think?
Sincerely, and with dimming hopes, …
p.s. I will stop putting quotes around “Democratic” party, and will stop using “so-called” as a necessary adjective, when you, EN MASSE, earn that humble title and honor with your actions. I’ve heard enough of your words. Shut up and do something good. Something right. For a change.
It’s hard to keep up on what they’re voting on, since they seem so willing to bury the supplemental vote under some other guise.
Seems like we’re still on lobbying and ethics amendments.

I think this is a “Give a Moose a Muffin” moment, pre-school for Democrats. If you give some people an inch, they’ll take a mile. If you concede that de-funding the war is the same as not supporting the troops, then a vote against funding the war is the same as not supporting the troops. Pretty soon, being a Democrat is not supporting the troops. In other words, don’t concede the meme in the first place, Donna and all clueless Democrats.

Here’s a tip for you “Democrats” – Bush is going to keep hitting you no matter what. You might as well hit back, especially as a vast majority of people in this country and and overwhelming majority around the world are on your side.
As I said a few threads ago, you’re proving that if you don’t stand for something, you’ll fall for anything.

What an ass-kicking we’re taking. And I hate that. I believe only in Victory.
I’ll give Madam Pelosi TEN days. 10 days to come up with a full battle plan, covering EVERY conceivable possibility of events in Iraq, the R team position, our counter, as well as our main thrust thru-out the Summer. For help, Pelosi should review EVERY comment by Mr. rwcole in the Disgusted thread. And I too am disgusted.
If Pelosi can’t get the job done, then I call for her Impeachment. Oh….I know she can’t really be impeached, but I like the sound of it. Pelosi, either get off your ass and come up with a SMART, GUTSY battle plan, or shag your ass back to SF on the Impeachment Plane.
Rep. Obey: the only “fight” I’ve seen out of you is when you yelled at some female out in the hallway of your office. Yelling at a woman….that’s it, Obey? Rep. Obey: either learn how to stand up like a Man, or you’ll need to start answering to the call of your name: Here, kitty, kitty, kitty.

This is it: supplemental up now.
Thanks Siun. Maybe just maybe vote will be put off…
iraq up NOW on c-span
While the troops remain in Iraq, the overwhelming majority of Americans support continuing to finance the war, though most want to do so with conditions. Thirteen percent want Congress to block all spending on the war. The majority, 69 percent, including 62 percent of Republicans, say Congress should appropriate money for the war, but on the condition that the United States sets benchmarks for progress and that the Iraqi government meets those goals. Fifteen percent of all respondents want Congress to approve war spending without conditions.
President Bush acknowledged the majority view at the news conference today when he spoke about the war spending bill now pending in Congress.
“As it provides vital funds for our troops, this bill also reflects a consensus that the Iraqi government needs to show real progress in return for America’s continued support and sacrifice,” he said in his opening remarks. “The Iraqi Study Group recommended that we hold the Iraqi government to the series of benchmarks for improved security, political reconciliation and governance that the Iraqis have set for themselves. I agree. So does the Congress. And the bill reflects that recommendation.”
Even so, the poll found that Americans now have more faith in the Democrats than in the Republicans on the issue of the Iraq war. For the first time, more than half of those polled — 51 percent — said the Democratic party is more likely than the Republican party to make the right decisions about the war.
In general, more Americans now have a favorable view of the Democratic party (53 percent) than of the Republican party (38 percent). The Republican party has not had a majority positive rating in a New York Times/CBS News poll since December 2003.
As for Mr. Bush, 23 percent approve of his handling of the situation in Iraq, while 72 percent disapprove; 25 percent approve of his handling of foreign policy, while 66 percent disapprove; and 27 percent approve of his handling of immigration issues, while 60 percent disapprove.

I joined the Democratic Party for the first time in my life a few weeks ago. I had been a paying member of the Green Party of Alaska for 17 years. Before that, I was a Republican, but I was saved in 1982 by Jerry Falwell. Saved me from staying with the GOP, because I despised Falwell’s GodSquad the minute they began spewing their studied hatred.
The reason I left the Greens for the Democrats is because, even with abominable senior leadership, the flow of young and progressive people toward the Democrats is telling. It is beginning to show in the US House. If we can take two or three more Senate seats, the character of that closely divided body will shift markedly. I have no confidence in the Democrats’ ability to field a true progressive in the presidential race, but that is another matter.
The key reasons for staying with the progressive wing of the Democratic Party right now are that we are taking over the House – not just the Dems but the progressive, liberal Dems – and because a third party just won’t work. Not in this decade, at least.
TeddySanFran @ 132
But isn’t that right? Politics is the art of the possible.
Brazille again!?!
I repeat a question epu’d earlier today:
Where have all the decent liberal/progressive spokespeople gone/been shelved???

You know, next time a congressman like Obey yells at a good progressive constituent, maybe we shouldn’t give him a pass.

I didn’t think he was quite “given a pass.” The video of his tantrum has been played and commented upon thousands and thousands of times. He’s a safe seat who might come into line in a House containing about 25 more progressives in 2009. Then again, is there a real liberal getting ready to challenge him in the primary?
If you are watching CSPAN, please note: the man on your teevee has spent almost a million dollars in the past year staying one step ahead of Mr. Law.
njr @ 166
Absolutely. This is a long haul, and instead of getting discouraged at time like this, we gotta double our efforts and get Democrats back into the DemocratIC Party.
noen @ 167
Nothing requires them to pass the supplemental — they could, and should, tell Bush, “If you wanted the funds you should have put them in the Defense Appropriation Bill for FY 2007.”
Congress, just say “NO” to supplementals.

You are of course totally correct-but these(#126) and others are still things that should be pushed. Keep them in the public mind. Keep pointing them out. Eventually, at least some of it would gain traction. No matter how long it takes; the alternative is to embrace the status quo, or at least make peace with it.
I’m not nearly ready for that.

True but the media is corporate controlled and won’t allow our message to get any real traction. How do we fight that?
BTW, I am just trying to flesh out what our real alternative are. I am as upset as everyone about this. But what I am looking for are practical real world strategy’s. That’s why I am pushing for alternatives. Just so you know.

seven dems voted against the rule. 7. that’s it. here they are:
Kucinich
Harman
McNerney
Stark
Moore (WI)
Waters
Clay
dems not voting:
Shea-Porter
Oberstar
Gutierrez
Jones (OH)
Lewis (GA)
Cardoza
DeGette
Engel
my rep, mcgovern, voted yes on rule.
damn.
p.s. here’s where scarecrow explains why the rules vote was the one that mattered for blocking this bill.
I called my representative. I called my two senators. I called Reid. I called Pelosi. My rep is already voting against it. Yeah. I told the senators it was not compromise, it was capitulation. That Rove was simply laughing at how the Dems had once more been manipulated because they operate out of fear. The Dems have enough power right now, maybe not to override a veto but certainly to NOT just rollover.

yeah i missed it… guess all we have left is the kabuki.

No, that’s not right. The ability to overide is not relevant to this issue. Let Bush keep vetoing, and let the Dems say “Bush is denying funds to our troops.” because that would be the truth.
And, really, the Dems could have probably gotten away with this despicable display if they hadn’t tried to tell us (and keep trying to tell us) that this was anything but a defeat. Beginning of the end? End of a blank check? Please. Do they really think we’re that stupid?
This is a moral issue for me, and it’s why it’s a litmus test. We are over there murdering innocent people for no valid reason every single day. The Dems have, at best, said that they’re perfectly willing to let the murder continue because they’re afraid that they might suffer political consequences if they stand up for good. That, in my book, is evil. I cannot support that.
I haven’t written off the Dems entirely yet. We’ll see what the end result of this is. But then, I’m one of those independents that left the party in disgust in the ’90s. I came back to help face down the threat of BushCo, not because I have some devotion to the Democratic party. If the Democratic party cannot face BushCo down, if I cannot trust them to at least try and fight the good fight (I don’t need them to always win) then they are useless to me.
If they are trying to fight the good fight now, using some ultra-subtle tactics that are opaque to me, then I need them to at least explain what they’re doing. The explanations I’ve heard from them so far have been nothing but BS.

Isn’t using National Security information in order to create a war without the President’s blessings grounds for impeachment or something? How can he do that?…Why am I even asking that?…(picks jaw off the floor)…

I’ve been a Democrat for 35 years, and I’m with you. But I am unhappy.
