“This Congress cannot impeach Bush for the same reasons it cannot force timetables for withdrawal - not enough votes. An abortive attempt at impeachment would cripple the Dems going into ‘08.”

I disagree. There is so much dirt in this administration that once a congressional investigation is started Bush/Cheney/Rove will all be caught in their lies and deceit. GOP members will have to go on record supporting all the corruption. There is no way the Dems will come out looking bad in ‘08 unless they let this Administration get out without accountability. Every time the Dems shine a light roaches start scurrying about. Even if they don’t get a conviction Impeachment cannot fail because the lies and corruption are overwhelming and this will send support for the occupation to an all time low. It’s a matter of timing. I just hope it can be done before Bush figures a way to implement his new Presidential Continuity Directive which essentially makes him dictator.

“If you strike the king, you must kill the king.”
The risk of failure implied in that quote is death. In this case the result of failure would be the death of democracy in America.

Nixon forced out Agnew in large part because he felt that an impeachment of Agnew would make the next step, impeachment of Nixon, much easier.

Impeachment of Clinton has, conversely, made impeaching Bush harder. If our benchmarks were Andrew Johnson and Nixon, impeachment would be on the table or at least much more openly discussed. The Republicans failed to “kill the king” but they knew the consequences from the lap-dog press and Lieberman clones would be mild.

So we must steel ourselves and accept that the end of removing Bush must be done carefully and deliberately. The first step is under way: impeachment of Gonzalez should soon follow the no confidence vote. Bush can not afford to lose Ganzo; any other AG that Congress will accept will start indicting most of the administration.

The Congress may have to take the time to remove Gonzo’s assistants first, to insure that an interim AG is a Civil Service employee.

Then Cheney must be impeached. You can not remove Czar Ridiculous to replace him with Rasputin.

Either Rove must be removed or Bush forced to defend him to the point that even the casual MSM viewed knows Bush is desperate to save himself by suborning a felon.

Only after all this ground work can the final articles on Bush begin to debated.

How long will this take? The rest of this year into early next year, at least. The final trial [and unless the stress drives Bush to drinking heavily in public, BushCo will go to a trial] may well be by a lame duck Senate. However, even that is important, because it will preempt the pardon fest that will attempt to immunize everyone in this administration.

People who vote for this “just a little longer”
will have opposition in their Primary..
Not a cent to these folks..until (maybe general election
Don’t have enough vote to over ride a veto.
Ok..If Bush does not bring the troops back when they are not funded it is his head…

Called Degette’s office..pleasantly informed them that if Ms. Degette votes yes..
She better start raising money for next year’s primary from outside of Denver..we commie/traitors-stop the funding-folks will be heard next time around..

I just hope enough Dems vote No to put this sucker down…

Scarecrow; good nuts ‘n’ bolts stuff.

You’re working up a common-sense “to do” list.

We need that…badly.

You’re right about the country not being ready for impeachment. That 51% who voted for bush in the last election will not want to see how wrong they were, being rubbed in their faces.

But I don’t think it will have to come to impeachment. And a lot of the impetus for serving the eviction notice will come from the republicans who WANT the voters to see them stringing bush up, politically speaking.

Hurried along by the events in Iraq (assuming that the democrats are not really willing or able to commit ritual seppuku by forcing a withdrawal by themselves) they will quietly…maybe LOUDLY :o); tell the dems: “We’re ready. Let’s do it.” and the 2nd white house visit by the Goldwater Firing Squad will tell bush that he can preside over the utter long-term trashing of the Republican Party, or he can take one for the team. (And still have access to some corporate boardroom sinecure of a “job”)

Whatever, you can bet money that it will start with Cheyney, and that it will start within the next twelvemonth.

I’ve known all along that the war will continue as long as W. and the Dick are in power. What I also know is that we can’t remove them. (Impeach yes-remove, no.) The GOP base isn’t going to abandon them no matter what, and unhappy though they my be about being stuck between the general public and the base in 2008, Congressional Republicans won’t dare ignore the majority of their own party.

Our part in the Iraqi civil war (which will continue after we leave) won’t end until and unless we get a Democratic President in 2009, and hopes to end the war before then have always been wishful thinking. With that in mind, everything we demand of the Dems in Congress should be with an eye on its effects in November 2008.

I understand a lot of people don’t want to hear this. Two more years of the status quo in Iraq is not a happy prospect. But it’s the reality, and we are supposed to be the reality-based community.

Done deal. . . funding is OVAH and so is the war.

A veto-proof congress is IRRELEVANT here

Scarecrow @ 129
Thanks for having more confidence in me than I have. Being trained in science, I assess evidence. The evidence of the last 30 years (or longer) is that the Rs have almost continuously ourmanouvered the Ds, and it took an amazingly bad policy & execution to get a bare D majority in Congress, and a D majority who barely knows how to wipe its behind.

You might have made a stronger point if you’d asked me: What’s the alternative? It’s worse, of course. That’s what keeps me going, not hope.

Well, then you have both logic and an unacknowledged hope. “Why didn’t you list that with our assets in the first place?” — Princess Bride

I’ve got a neighbor in the country just like you. He promises to include me in his defense if/when it comes to that. In the meantime, he hunts on my property & gives my venison in exchange.
