Here are some stories that on the surface may not seem to be linked at all.
Story #1: John Andrews, Colorado media pundit, former president of the Colorado State Senate, and general frothing-at-the-mouth Republican nutbar, went before Congress and in an apparent effort to fight the proposed immigration reform bill, told a weird-ass cock-and-bull story about a mythical radical Islamist paramilitary training camp staffed by (gasp!) illegal aliens (oooh, scary!) that was currently operating in his fair state. (Ironically enough, there was a radical Sufi sect involved in racketeering in Colorado nearly twenty years ago, but they didn't last very long, didn't have an "anti-American terrorist agenda" but instead went after Hindus and other Muslims they didn't like, and were dealt with most satisfactorally by the law enforcement personnel of the time, without resorting to waterboarding or any other neocon Abu Ghraib fantasies.)
Story #2: The San Francisco Chronicle, which considering their location should friggin' know better, ran without comment an anti-gay story that used as evidence the bogus statements of known liar and bigot Paul Cameron.
Story #3: A group calling itself "The Coalition for the Future of the American Worker", hiding behind the "blackwash" provided by T. Willard Fair, an African-American member of Jeb Bush's and now Charlie Crist's state Cabinets in Florida, pretends to be standing up for black Americans by attacking undocumented Hispanic immigrants. The group turns out to be run by Roy Beck, who far from being a civil rights hero is connected to various racist groups.
Figured out the linkages yet? Here's the ones I've noticed:
– The protagonists in these stories are all conservative Republicans or strongly allied with them.
– They all don't much care for people who are Not Like Them, be these people gay, brown, or both.
– The mainstream media, far from consistently calling them on their bigotry, generally allows their statements to pass without comment or challenge.
Far from being the "big tent" party they claim to be, the electoral success of the former Party of Lincoln is built on the bedrock of bigotry, and has been for decades, ever since the modern form of what Kevin Phillips would come to call "The Southern Strategy" was first used by none other than George Herbert Walker Bush in his attempt to unseat Democratic Senator Ralph Yarborough in 1964.
It governs all their key policy stances. Take taxes and social programs, for instance: They favor low or no taxes and minimal social programs, in finest white-supremacist "bleed the beast" fashion, because they don't like contributing to the common good, don't like seeing their money go to folks with darker skins than theirs (and their skins, especially those of their leading politicians, are pretty darned light), and know that by nurturing and inflaming these bigotries in others, they can convince those others to vote against their own best interests. They use these same bigotries to attack Latino immigrants, documented or not, as allegedly taking away jobs from American workers — but along with their leader George W. Bush have over the years cut back on enforcing penalties against those companies that exploit immigrant labor. This allows crooked sweatshop owners to hire immigrant workers at near-slave wages (thus undermining the wages of other workers), put them to work in despicable conditions, and turn them in to the ICE if they dare to speak up about it. The basic conflict between the business wing, which wants illegals as a cheap and disposable source of labor, and the base, which wants to expel (or execute, as did Michael Wayne Bobo's Alabama militia) all Meskins and put a moat around the US, is starting to tear at the party's foundations.
And, as Bob Somerby noted back in 2002, their good friends in the mainstream media know not to talk about any of this. Shhh! It's their dirty little secret.

Bush Authorizes New Covert Action Against Iran
http://blogs.abcnews.com/thebl…..rizes.html
Denied! despair no wait 2nd Zed!
AP – President Bush portrayed the Iraq war as a battle between the U.S. and al-Qaida on Wednesday and shared nuggets of intelligence to contend Osama bin Laden was setting up a terrorist cell in Iraq to strike targets in America.
You seriously would have to be walking around without a brain to believe these people.
I don’t think you missed much, because after all was said and done, there wasn’t much there. Even the potential bombshells were tempered by “but I don’t remember everything that was said.”
She was a good witness for Gonzo. She left more questions than answers. She left her smoking gun at home.
Wasn’t there some kind of proffer before the immunity grant?
Oops, wrong thread.

Oh, that must be why his adminstration disband the military unit searching for him, and why he said Ossama was not important and he doesn’t even think about him. Grow a fucking brain bush!
TULSA — Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney today criticized a national news organization for airing details of U.S. covert actions in Iran.
He questioned the decision by ABC News “to publish information about a covert action’s existence and publish that not only to America, but to the entire world.”
The one hope this country has to be rid of this disease is our young people.
I have seen a remarkable lack of racism and a great deal more tolerance out of our kids than I have ever seen before.
Now we just have to wait for the racist bastards out there to die off.

a half day. exam then go home.
Divide and conquer. If Charles Barkley understands it, so should we:
WASHINGTON (CNN) — U.S. officials said Wednesday that a “joint campaign plan redesign team” is preparing a new diplomatic and military strategy for Iraq, which is expected to be approved by the end of the month.
The team, led by Gen. David Petraeus and U.S. Ambassador to Iraq Ryan Crocker, is laying out a new course for how to proceed in the four-year-old war, the officials told CNN.
One element of the plan is to try to identify groups of people — including possibly Sunni extremists and militia groups — with whom U.S. officials feel they can do business, such as negotiating power-sharing and cease-fire agreements and granting economic aid, the sources said.
SnarKassandra @ 13
a proffer is what a defendant, or potential defendant, (usually, but not today) offers in return for a grant of immunity.
As in – “ok, if you’ll grant me immunity, here’s what I can provide for you, in return, by way of sworn testimony.”
The question then becomes an examination of whether what is being offered is worth the grant of immunity.
Gotta bring this up from the previous thread.
I listened to the whole hearing while observing this wonderful space. Now I’m listening to Randi Rhodes on 3 hour delay from San Diego.
Snark Attack! Have some fun.

Great post, PW — this is exactly why Lou Dobbs went off on our new friend Laura Flanders. The respectable, non-racist nationalists in the anti-immigrant coalition know that their underpinnings of support come from radical white supremacists, America-for-whites-only, Confederate flag waving types who they actually fear. Calling Dobbs on his “allies” and his language makes him uncomfortable, because he is not entirely sure he can ride the wave of xenophobia without it cresting over top of him.
JOY OH JOY!!There is a new Cheney in the world.

OT btw NAM’s statement about Baroody (who used to head NAM) withdrawing his nomination to head the Consumer Products Safety Commission. No sour grapes here, nosirree.
Hi PW, good post. I used to think Bob Somerby repeated himself too much. Having suffered through the shrub administration, I’m glad he keeps it up…at least some of us are finally getting it.
We’re not outta the woods yet on Baroody; this seems like pressure on Shrub to recess-appoint him.
What I got from the post is that repubs are slimy, but on issues we didn’t talk about yet this week.
Greg Palast coming up on Randi…

remember the swift boats guy? “boo hoo, i have to withdraw my nomination now. evil demmicrats!”
along comes a brief recess and…
RECESS APPOINTMENT!
look for the same process over the coming memorial day recess.
Yeah, it’s so nice to discover that Osama binForgotten wanted to use Iraq as an international operations base in 2005.
Notice the stated (by Shrub) intention and the year. He’s lying in his bleached teeth. Again. using Iraq as a recruiting area for Al Qaeda, now: that I’d believe. But as a base for operations, no. It’s more security theater.
Obviously the only way to stabilize the Middle East is to wipe out the Iraqis, the Iranians and the Palestinians.
Oklahoma kiddo @ 35
pleased to meet you, Mr. Netanyahu!
Rove needs to redo his “math ” the Iraq war is the biggest issue now only if the war ends will immigration rise to be biggest issue assuming gas prices and the economy don’t. However
1) the first southern strategy relied upon Democrats being blamed for losing Vietnam
2) Ford and Jimmy both a democrat and republican lost because of a bad economy and higher gas prices.
3)Racism/ the southern strategy increases in effectiveness as the economy goes south since people need someone to blame
Rove should factor in to his “math”
1) Bush owns this war
2) Iraq is such a mess that if our troops leave Iran, Saudia Arabia etc will all increase oil production to buy weapons and yes nukes. more oil means cheaper oil and a better economy
3) Those Al Queida jerks can reap what they have sown an Arabia Free of America PERFECT FOR IRAN TO INVADE
4)Al Queida will be very busy trying to stop Iran from taking over they won’t have too many men or much money left over for America
5) If Iran uses a nuke they know we can send hundreds of nuke bombs their way. In fact it would be good for Iranians to see for themselves with their own nuke test how dangerous nukes are, in 20 years I expect to see a anti nuke movment in Iran.

SnarKassandra @ 31
So many issues, so little time.
It’s really a unified field theory combining governance, astroturf, media gaming, and illegal use of government to perpetuate their grip on power.
You look at how dumb some of the Bush/GOP actions seem in retrospect, but if you assume that everything is part of the grand plan for continued power, then a lot of stuff makes more sense.
They fire USA’s with no stated reason, because, of course, they can’t say the real reason; they purge voting lists to “prevent fraud”, when in fact their just trying to give themselves a margin. They redistrict mid-census, because it will give them a few more safe seats (not enough, alas!) in the house. They continue to lie about Iraq and al qaeda because fear is their only weapon left: reason, logic, policy all fall by the wayside. They use a media outlet that repeats falsehoods so much that their viewers are the worst-informed citizens in the country.
I’m missing stuff, so people feel free to chime in. But you get the idea.
This is today’s Republican Party. You can’t understand them in bits and pieces. Only when you step back.

Citizen Pheonix Woman and the Firepup Patriots:
(Hope you are weatherin’ the storm over on yer side of the St. Croix River…we are still gettin’ blasted here jest north and east a Hudson.)
As for the racism and coordinated attacks on “illegal aliens” and ,generally, folks of color…this is jest part of the dominant corporate ideology locked in after 1877. All the patterns of fear mongering’, race-bating, religious exclusion and scapegoating we have seen in the last 6 years are consistent with the mainstreamin’ of Nazi ideology in the last years of Wiemar. That the American oligarchy was closely connected to and actually deeply invested in the rise of Hitler, is no secret and the Walker-Bush crime family involvement goes back to war profiteering’ with the Krupps in WWI thru old Prescott and Henry Ford’s joint ventures with the Austrian paper-hanger.
What we have today is a fully mainstreamed fascist politics built around the blueprint of the Nazis in the early 1930’s…the corporate oligarchy in this country is now committed, it’s all er nuthin’. If we don’t develop an anti-fascist “big tent” movement that includes public committment to criminal trials, impeachment and war crimes investigations and identifies and isolates the corporatists in every race in every district in every state in the union in ‘08…well then, we’re toast and the rest of the world will isolate us and worse.
We don’t have time to play parliamentary parlor games with supplemental budget resolutions and congressional investigative hearings without subpoenas to the decision-makers. The fascists have the legal system (they have had it since the Civil War) and only an FDR-like landslide and implementation of Democratic reconstruction can save us.
We hafta use the new media and the non-governmental political associations like Move-On and People for the American Way to form a mass movement to get millions in the streets all over this country and shut down business as usual.
Only direct action can force the Democratic Party to separate itself from the corporate fascist money.
KEEP THE FAITH AND PASS THE GOD DAMNED AMMUNITION – GOD DOESN’T LIKE WHIMPS!!

…and now, this from MSNBC:
Wolfowitz, who has no experience running an international terror organization, struck many Washington insiders as an unlikely choice for the Al Qaeda job.
But in a White House ceremony introducing his nominee for the top terror post, President Bush indicated that Wolfowitz’s role in planning the war in Iraq and bringing scandal to the World Bank showed that he was “just the man” to bring chaos and disorder to Al Qaeda.
“I’ve seen Paul Wolfowitz in action,” said Bush, a beaming Wolfowitz at his side. “If anyone can mess up Al Qaeda, it’s this guy.”
Sadly, it’s probably the best chance they’ve got.

remember how we were worried about 2006? were people paying attention? well, they were. don’t think average people don’t know what’s happening here. true, msm tries to bury it. but every person i know (@100) who is my age or a bit younger has a son, daughter, grandson or granddaughter who is on the net and keeping up (like our own cassie!) and they make sure their parents and grandparents know about it.
bush is almost certainly going to start a war in iraq and then say “elect repubs or they’ll follow us home!” the repubs will say “democrats are traitors!”. but in the end, despite all the screaming, the dems will take the presidency and expand their control in the house by 10-20 votes and the senate by 2-5 votes. and by then cleaning up the mess and firewalling against wedge issues, we can keep the ball rolling all the way into the 2020’s.
remember, my job is to be as evil as the enemy if not more so, but only to defeat them. and the rethugs smell disaster in 2008 and they know we know it.

Teddy, I’ve actually heard our pro-war military folk on the teevee say in a matter-of-fact manner that some areas of Iraq are more stable because “the ethnic cleansing has already been done there”. I assume what they meant by using that term was that any minorities in those cities/towns had left, leaving them pure and therefore not violent. Of course, the notion that ethnic cleansing is a victory made me sick to my stomach. Is this our objective – to ethnically cleanse Iraq?
Sickening.
Rayne @ 53
Yeah, but white males drive and are pissed about gas prices, too…so he might pay attention.
Rayne – don’t bring up Engler. I just ate dinner and my stomach isn’t settled yet!
(Actually, gotta do a little work – see you all a bit later).
We need to hit Lou Dobbs, Glen Beck where they live! A smart democrat who wants the hispanic vote should push to free cable TV Hispanics should not have to pay Lou Dobbs who insults them just because they want to see the Daily Show! Muslims should not have to watch Glenn Beck say a muslim can’t swear his congresional oath of office on a Koran. How long will CNN keep these white hoodies employed if Hispanics and Muslims had the choice of dropping any cable channel that pissed them off! Does CNN want their stock to drop as they get stuck playing second fiddle to fox for a 30% audience share? If we give people a choice about what channels to pay for we can take out a lot of racists MainStreamMedia types.
Hugh @ 43
We’re still below $3.00 in Alaska at some stations, but the legislative session is over and any possibility of influencing votes on oil tax and gasline buiilding is over until next winter, so I expect prices to go up about 25 cents in the next ten days.

The Southern Strategy can’t work you can’t look at all the poor Whites killed for cheap oil as Bush gives tax cuts to the rich while humvees and troops wait and (are still waiting?) to get bullet proof vests and armour. The Southern Strategy depends on
1)poor and stupid/raised to think Racist thoughts plus poor whites going through a tough time
2) Higher gas prices, bad economy them needing someone OBVIOUS to blame
So who looks easier to blame today Rove? Rich whites who don’t serve in the army but are getting tax cuts or blacks who do serve?
All the Democrats need is a higher minium wage and healthcare for everyone. Rove spreads hate he blames everyone else for the problems Republicans cause he divides the nation by race and religon and laughs at us all fighting over the crumbs of a pie the rich have already eaten. Hey, Snarkassandra – I just read your post, and I’m afraid I can answer your question about the boy from Mississippi didn’t get an ad litem, etc. Oddly enough, Texas’s system is pretty good that way, better, obviously, than that in Mississippi. Marvelous, awesome, and SOOOOO spot on t o the core.
Toss in the hateful and malicious onslaught of Fundie Christians, and the combined attempted massacre of gays and blacks, and you’ve got the group seeking to turn this country into a their own little dictatorshit.
And they do it, by calling the rest of us not with them, as soiled, evil and reviled and unfit for life as they pray to it.
May them rot in the hell of their worst fears as I sip and sup and pick and grin in the unfettered wilds of Camp Mather, and the Strawberry Music Festival with 5,000 FDL like pups.
At last, with my own kind, in person. For a few precious days.
Thank you, Phoenix Woman, Thank you, for such a great send off. (BIGSMILE)
Noted Vicente Fox making the rounds up to Utah to meet Senator Hatch last year before he got out of office. Was that to check on how many Meskins were needed in the new world order for all the ranch and farm owners in the Intermountain West?
The original post mentioned racist activities in Colorado:
On Monday at 5:20 a.m., federal agends from ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) swept up “fugitive aliens” in Southern Colorado. In Pueblo, they arrested a man who was in the process of becoming a legal alien. The only “splotch” on his record was drunk driving charges that were were dropped –9 yrs. ago.
A construction worker without any criminal record, he was torn from his 4-yr. old daughter and wife, who said “I don’t think I can be without him. He’s the main provider of our house.” This man was carted off to Denver, 100 miles north, without being allowed to get dressed.
He is only one of many such. See story at http://chieftain.com/metro/1179810000/2
This is clearly a racist (or ethnic) vendetta that has nothing to do with anything but hatred of the brown skinned.

God bless you, what a FINE send off, along with PW’s lead, to keep me grinnin in the pines as I put this all behind for a few days.

It IS do or die time in our republic. By September, if there’s been no appreciable halt to the Big Bro Corporatist Machine Of War, it’s as you say. It’s over. May Bhudda help those who will come after us in 20 years as we die out, and they have to live with it at its worst.
Peace where possible, n pass the whiskey.
We’re gonna need fortificaction to clean out THIS shitswamp of evil from the planet’s life.
And with that, I’m outta here FLD puppers. Thanks for the love and inspiration. I’ll holler witcha next week sometime.
Heh! I EPU’d myself!
Off to TRex’s thread!
“The respectable, non-racist nationalists in the anti-immigrant coalition…”
With all respect, Teddy- which ones are those? I read your comment twice to see if you meant that sarcastically. As a black man, I don’t believe there are any non-racist nationalists in the anti-immigration coalition.
As for this T. Willard Fair person, he either feels the same way about Hispanics (and even blacks) as the others do, or he’s a willing tool, in it for personal gain. I don’t know which is more despicable.
