Once our leaders bought into the GOP frame, it was only a matter of time until we capitulated.
This ‘abandoning the troops’ and ’surrender’ rhetorical frame has to be smacked down and smacked down hard. It is utter nonsense. Yet, at the begining of the debate our leaders ‘pledged not to abandon the troops.’ As Casey Stengel once inquired, “Can’t anyone here play this game?”

I am as disgusted as you are, Jane, but the truth is, we’ve been screaming at the tops of our lungs for a long time now. Pelosi and Reid don’t have the votes. Don’t have ‘em.

We’ve written our congresscritters, we’ve called, we’ve faxed, we’ve protested, we voted, and the polls are quite clear that a plurality of Americans want the hell out. Still, the votes just aren’t there.

I don’t know what the answer is.

I think what is happening (whether it was planned or not) is that the vote puts the Senators on the record and that has to play out in the next election. I know it stinks, but that’s our slow-moving-political system in a faster-moving world.

Halliburton chairman defends move to Dubai

Referring to the Iraqi market, Lesar said that, for the time being, Halliburton was going to steer clear of it for security reasons.

“I am not going to put our people at risk,” he said.

Lesar also referred to the company’s announcement last month that it had wrapped up its commitments in Iran and was no longer conducting any projects there.

Or maybe they’re better occupied setting up a refuge from which neocon war criminals could not be extradited to the Hague.

100 billion of pork (how much do you think really goes to “support” the troops?) is a hard thing to vote down.

The President is wearing out our combat troops so quickly that the military is re-training US Air Force troops as ground combat troops. That’s shocking!

According to an awful lot of what I have been hearing and reading, Bush cannot keep this war going at this level for all that much longer–funding or not, timelines or not, benchmarks or not. There just aren’t enough troops (and won’t be w/out a draft) or equipment.

Bush is just being stubborn and willful. He is not going to let the dems ‘tell’ him what to do. And if he wants to break the military, then by golly he will, simply because it is his perogative.

I am very nervous that no one ever ever talks about how we are going to pay for all this. Grover Norquist’s prayer’s may have been answered by 9-11. The govt will be so broke, and the economy so wreaked that there will be no money for govt programs. Unless someone has the guts to stand up to this “no new taxes” bs and starts to tax the extremely wealthy.
