Well, I know we've all felt pretty discouraged today. It appears that The Commander Guy will get his blank check, but hey, chances are nobody's dosed you with Polonium-210. See? There's something to be grateful for.
Other Reasons to Be Cheerful:
1. Rush Limbaugh is not your landlord.
2. You're not the poor soul who's fielding Ann Althouse's frantic 3:00am phone-calls.
3. You probably don't have Ebola.
4. Those pants make your ass look fantastic. (Unless, of course, you aren't wearing any pants, which brings us to...)
5. You're not wearing any pants.
So, whistle a happy tune. After all tomorrow is another day. And it's the day the world gets a Brand New Monica.

Nicely done!
hey TRex - rough day, eh?
Ohhhhh, Graham Chapman in a loincloth.
Why didn’t he live long enough to be my boyfriend?
hi
“always look on the blight side of life”
Gosh, where is everyone? What am I, chopped liver, here?
punaise, did you see all the genie jokes in the last thread?
TRex @ 7
well, now that you ask, yes. but we try not to mention it. :>
If I whistle a happy tune the whippoorwills will be in the yard all night…)
TRex @ 6
“it’s my pate*, you can come”
*accent grave
I had a bad dream last night where I was pulling slugs out of my gums. I woke up and almost vomitted!
Alfred Kelgarries @ 7
quickly scanned, will drop back to check
cancer_cures @ 12
whatever you had before going to bed, don’t have it tonight.
Et tu, pate*?
5. You’re not wearing any pants.
NTodd showed up? He never wears his pants…
TRex @ 15
chopped liver?
TRex @ 7
No, but dino burgers grill up nicely.
Negotiation is the art of getting parties from A to Z, or wherever you want to define the end, but lets take z for now. If you try to go directly from, say A to K, in hopes of going directly from K to Z, you are likely to fail. Its a process that requires a lot of patience–getting from A to A prime, and them A double prime is more progress. You get the idea.
One has to give the congressional process, similarly, time to work, because it is a slow dance.
On the other hand, its clear that the public is going to have to drag the pols along here. Mass action, in my view, is the key. Gotta call in the infantry here, and get some boots on the ground in NY, Chi, SFO and DC, DC, DC.
Don’t forget the spirit of seattle
One other thing to console myself with — good results in today’s Kentucky primary. Looks like the most decent of the Dems running for governor (Steve Beshear) won’t have to do a run-off election, and he’ll be up against our very own Ernie “excuse me while I pardon myself” Fletcher, who doesn’t even have the (full) support of our favorite Senator, Mitch “I look like your grandma on a bad hair day” McConnell. Heh.
Very good, TRex. I’m really looking to try to find some lemonade to make out of these lemons.
cancer_cures @ 20
absinthe? or midori?
Yes. I suppose I should be whistling a happy tune.
The FDA and USDA decided that instead of having longer and more press conferences on tainted food they just won’t hold any! The regular press conferences were tightly controlled and they STILL are afraid of information leaking out!
(Wait, aren’t they supposed to want information to get out?)
I’m sure that Chinese trade talks this week have NOTHING to do with this…
I read the Harper’s special issue on how to clean up after the Bush administration.
What really made me angry was the way the enablers ask like they had nothing to do with this.
SteveAudio @ 18
Yup, tastes just like chicken.
(I’m sorry, but I wasn’t here that night.)
why not both??Alfred Kelgarries @ 23
cancer_cures @ 26
IIRC absinthe is illegal…
TRex - how’s the headache - deep breathing often works for me followed by a handful of aspirin.
punaise @ 1
Not the Pungitive Punster!!!
Helpless Dancer @ 25
You just have to make sure all the scales are off first, they burn, get super crunchy, and don’t really taste good.
Nah not illegal. Illegal to sell or purchase but to consume it’s O.K.
I just popped over to Harpers front page and found a story on a familiar topic.
May 22, 1:44 AM
Russian Secret Service Agents to be Indicted in Litvinenko Murder
The headache is finally loosening its grip. I’m hoping that the plate of pasta I’m about to eat puts the final kibosh on it.
cancer_cures @ 31
ah, so if asked “it was a gift!”. got it.
Hey TRex. Loved Emily Loizeau - Je Suis Jalouse the French video you put up the other night.
My video Thank you is The Pipettes- We are the Pipettes.
They other animated video, ABC is also really fun. They remind me of The Go Gos, B52s and a bit of Bananrama. Oh and a bit of Fountains of Wayne too.
TRex @ 33
Advil is your friend.
That, and caffeine, are my drugs of choice.
oops…finaly got a good compile. off to the land of nod, see everyone manana for either the monica celebration or the monica commiseration.
sleep tight and no headaches and no polonium.
TRex @ 33
I’m trying ice cream therapy.
Alfred Kelgarries @ 37
g’night & sleep tight…
Suzanne @ 22
See Dr. Bonzo at #21. A real Democrat beat a DINO (no offense, TRex!) in Kentucky!
Dr. Bonzo @ 21
Most Excellent Dude!!! Did the Dem’s pull higher #’s, than the Repug’s, just asking, it is typically a Red(neck) State!!! ;)
Suzanne @ 38
Now, now, my dear, must watch that girlish figure, of yours!!! ;)
Well, the majority of the people wants an end to the Iraq crime. So does the majority in both elected chambers. And there is nothing they can do against this slaughter?
If thats what you call “democracy”- why not try a serious system? Any system.
Girlish? CT, gravity is no longer my friend. Thanks - most people nag me to eat more.
PW - how is the press covering McCain along the Arizone highways? My wingnut neighbor removed his bumpersticker - he lives here part time and hails from Chloride. I stopped neighborly chats when he went on a vicious rant about Harry Reid.
I’m always late posting a comment; I must have been the last one on “A Modest Proposal”, but wanted some feedback, so I am reposting it here:
What to Do????
1. All true Dems (and any other votes we can get) should vote NO on the revised Iraq
You caught up with us, Marilyn In Texas :) How are you doing tonight? Any good news to share?
Suzanne @ 44
Only looking out for your well-being M’lady!!! (sheepishly, slinks under table!) *g*
spocko @ 35
http://www.emilyloizeau.net/index2.html
Emily is lotsa fun! Musically speaking, she’s got swing, an alluring voice, exquisite phrasing, and really does channel the spirit of Brassens with her playful attitude and honesty. Kind of a throwback… I could see her standing up on the Night of Song at La Fourmi Rouge (last Sunday night of every month, when we sing the old folk songs and the revolutionary songs of the Canuts).
Of course, the rest of us posers would be spellbound…
Dr. Bonzo @ 21
Just imagine — on this terrible, horrible, very bad day, there’s good news for Democrats in KENTUCKY. Whodathunkit? Really, can you believe it? Because I can’t.
cancer_cures @ 20
What IS the spirit of Seattle? I could never figure that one out in the old days, and even now I don’t know what it means when I hear or read it.
Looks like everyone went to bed early so they can watch the new Monica on Cspan tomorrow. That’s what I’m about to do anyway. ;)
CTuttle @ 41
In the Gov races, 348,000 Dem votes vs. 202,000 Repug votes. However that’s mostly a reflection of how embarrassed most of the state is by Fletcher, not a likely predictor of November numbers.
On a more local note, we Louisvillians were pleased to see our erstwhile Representative, Anne “I love my Preznit and his Social Security Destruction plan” Northup get trounced by Fletcher, in spite of having been endorsed by much of the Repug establishment (notably McConnell). We canned Anne in ‘06 — here’s hoping we put Ernie out of his misery in ‘07 and ditch Mitch in ‘08.
TheOtherWA @ 52
Is it scheduled for 10:00 a.m. EST?
CT, I’m more of a nibbler and grazer - I eat small amounts of stuff all day long. no need to slink under your table :)
Dr. Bonzo @ 53
Awesome, Even with the caveat!!!
I’m always posting late; I think I was the last commenter on the Modest Proposal article. I wanted feeback, so I’m reposting here.
What Democrats in the House and Senate must do:
1. All true Dems (and any other votes we can get) should vote NO on the revised Iraq funding bill compromise (give away).
2. Alternatively, Dems in conference committee should reinstate the withdrawal of troops timelines or some provision that would ban continued surges etc. This would provoke a veto but it will continue to erode Bush’s plaint that Democrats are not supporting the troops.
3. Also, Democrats should repeat and repeat and repeat that the earlier Defense Appropriation legislation has amply money from which Bush can draw (he threatened to take the money from other pots, remember?) Therefore, the Democrats are not NOT SUPPORTING the TROOPS!
4. Continue, vith vigor, hearings and investigations into Republican scandals and worng doings all the way into 2008.
5. Since it is obvious that we do not have a veto proof majority and could probably not sustain a conviction under impeachment, we should continue to emphasize that any future death of our troops are laid at the feet of Bush et al.
6. Democratics in Congress (I’m sure they know) may not have the votes, but they do have the power to allow legislation to be voted on. USE THAT POWER!!!
ET, yes. That’s 7am, west coast. Gotta get the coffeemaker set up.
ET, what time is that for you? 6am or 5?
TheOtherWA @ 58
Or 6:00 am wester coast. Thanks. So do you know what the spirit of Seattle is, OWA?
Suzanne @ 55
A Bird, that’s what my wife calls me, meanwhile, she just had a steak and lobster meal on the Spirit of Aloha, as its sailing to view the volcano, on the Big Isle, bound for Maui and ports beyond!
No, hahaha. It sounds like a ship, but that’s a guess.
ET - it is 10 a.m. EST and this ole brat better get to bed in hope of catching the start of what I hope and trust proves a happier day than this one.
Sweet dreams all you fine firepups and thanks for another memorable late and late late nite on this wondrous lake.
Nite everyone. See you in the morning!
newspaperbrat @ 63
Amen, NPB, one gotcha, after another, would be mighty sweet!!! Nite!!!
I’m gonna be headed off to bed soon myself. This firepup is tired.
Suzanne @ 66
I’ll bid you a fond adieu, ma cheri!!! ;)
TheOtherWA @ 64
Nite, nite!!!
g’nite all.
Thought I recognized the name Ann Althouse, and then found her on a “Berkman Center for Internet & Society, Harvard Law School” thing I receive periodically. Who is this twit, and why would people think that what she calls a blog is worth reading? See http://althouse.blogspot.com/2.....rence.html
Marilyn In Texas @ 57
Feedback:
I thought people freaked out a bit much over this today. The Dems’ control over the Senate is tenuous. The House is showing a lot more feistiness, but this war is long from over and the war over the war is just beginning. Kids still in Junior High School when I got out of the Army during the Vietnam War died in Vietnam five or six years later. If Clinton, Richardson or Obama are elected, that will be the case with this war too - a generational war against an ideology which we fuel more than we eradicate.
This is the most senseless war in our country’s history, but our political system is under attack more from within than from without. But by expanding influence in the US House in 2008, progressives can win back control of this country.
Yup, me too. Good night, everybody. Big day tomorrow. Everybody get your favorite blue dress and stay away from UV lights.
See you at the hearings!
Marilyn In Texas @ 57
I had mentioned upthread, the Dems need to keep ramming the same bill down his throat!!! If he vetoes it, its his political loss, period!!! The masses rejected Shrub’s maladministration, resoundingly, both Houses!!! The only loss the Dems face is their resolve!!!
TRex @ 72
Roger that, T!!! Good Night!!!
Ed*ard Teller @ 71
ET, agreed.
I posted 2 threads ago about an item no one
else mentioned today — the massive base construction. Massive.
We are in this for the long haul.
We have to see the big pic.
We have to conceptualize the equation so that it includes the *concrete* establishment we are creating over there.
No one has talked about this so far.
This ain’t no straw piggy house that’s gonna get blown over by “tough talk.”
It’s brick. And built to last.
TribeScribe @ 75
web sites like antiwar.com, whatreallyhappened.com and counterpunch.org have been reporting about the long-term base RFPs and designs for almost four years. Our addiction to oil is probably at the heart of our continuing denial and enabling, but it didn’t help traction that most of the sites who saw this from the beginning were also highly critical of the links between the PNAC guys to Netenyahu’s 1990s study groups.
ET@71, There are far more variables than you atribute! I believe there is a maelstrom headed for the White House, it may be sooner, rather than later!!! The populace is pissed, the national polls are showing increased intensity in the responses to the questions, i.e. “Do you strongly agree…?” It’s pitchfork time!!!
Best article from Beirut I’ve read this week. It is almost three days old now, but Fisk is a great observer. Whenever I’m about to call him Tom Friedman Lite, he writes something quite penetrating, restoring my faith in him.
Thank you TRex for making my day slightly more palatable………….
After my elected representatives decided to fold in lieu of holding the Neo supporters in Congress to some sort of accountability , my
psyche was at the same level as whale dung .
Here’s hoping that Wednesday , May 23rd , will
mark a day in history whereas no one will ever
name their daughter Monica from thereon ……
Nevada Bob
CTuttle,
I drive from Palmer to Anchorage several times a week. A year ago it seemed like every third car or truck had a W sticker somewhere. It has been about 700 miles of commuting since I’ve seen one, or any other sign supporting a GOP shill here, in the reddest of areas in a very red state.
OTOH - lots of people still sporting their Sarah Palin stickers…
I thought the Kalakala was the Spirit of Seattle. What has happened to that ship since her return to Washington in 1998 has reinforced my view that Seattle has no idea what its spirit might be.
Ed*ard Teller @ 80
It’s interesting here, we elected one of the first ‘Green’ Mayors, Keiko Bonk, then a DINO, Steve Yamashiro, and then an Independent, Harry Kim!!! It’s like we can’t make up our minds, we’re split between the Greens and the big Developement DINO’s, the R designation is the kiss of death!!! But, those DINOS wreck havoc!!!
CTuttle @ 82
The Green Party needs to support the progressive elements attempting to reshape the Democratic Party. I was a Green Party member for 17 years. I’ve left and joined the Dems because through local elections and issues up to the level of US House, the outrage in America can most effectively express itself soon through an existing major party structure. Greens need to re-think any US House campaigns they are planning for 2008, unless they have a sure WIN.
Might I suggest that you just shut this blog down?
There is no further point in long, heavy discussions re Dems vs Reps. The are identically the same. Both scared witless that if any kind of stand is made they lose their job.
I mean you get the same response regardless of the party so whats the point?
Great job Trex.
This is a tougher slog than I imagined.
This clip is a fabulous reminder of what we need to do, and the need to stay focused.
Thanks.
JustWondering @ 84
What do you suggest we now do?
Ed*ard Teller @ 83
Similarly, Nader shouldn’t have ran in ‘00 and ‘04, not so much with Gore, but, it impacted Kerry’s #s and base!!!
CTuttle @ 87
The two-party system sucks. Alaska provides many examples of maverick candidates and parties throwing the two parties off the dance floor and plopping ‘em on their butts. Up here Greens, Libertarians, Alaska Independance Party and just made this name up today parties have an important voice. Most radio and TV debates and almost all public debates feature the candidates from all the parties.
What do you mean? There is nothing else to do?
Don’t like the economy? Discuss, discuss, discuss. The results won’t change. Same with health care. And with immigration.
Problems with DOJ? Gonzo isn’t going to resign. We all kmow that. Why have meaningless hearings? Monica could implicate Rove nine ways to Sunday tomorrow. He’ll still be around next week, next month, next year.
Why bother to even think about the Dems any longer? They cave. Weaklins. Who’d want to vote for a Dem president? From a party filled with cowards? Hmmm?
JustWondering @ 89
just wondering, JustWondering,
If you don’t mind, how old are you?
Ed*ard Teller @ 88
It’s truly sickening that we are chained to the megalithic two party system, most of the G-7 is a parliamentary democracy, works great for them! Must, because we lag behind them in just about every category, for that matter, we lag behind most of the industrialized nations!!!
How old? Thats a strange question.
Why do you ask?
JustWondering @ 92
Just Wondering??? Bwhahahaha ;)
JustWondering @ 84
Very true. All that is left are “Monica” and “Libby” and their pretty crimes that are or will be pardoned. Who cares? But what the world handwringingly is looking and hoping for, an end to the occupation of Iraq, the wholesale killings of civilians- all committed by the troops from the “shining city on the hill”: no progress!
Your stand to loose whatever few supporters you may still have. Farewell.
JustWondering @ 92
Because I get an image of young - under 40 - and impatient. I’m 60.
Rainer, I agree that pressure must be applied to our elected reps, we need to provide that backbone to stiffen their spines! We must impose the Will of the People, For the People!!!
Interesting. I thought it might have been because of my word choice and/or useage.
Actually, I am retired. I was a mathematician until the powers that be decided I was no longer competent enough to understand my own papers and research.
So I was farmed out, fobed off with a nice pension. Now I spend my time reading blogs and working in my garden.
Many years ago (immediately after college) though I was a TC (tank commander) in the US Army and saw exactly what war is all about. Thus my impatience today with this vote.
JustWondering @ 97
M60, M113???
JW @ #97,
My hat is off. Maybe I’m too patient.
M60. I was in the Army from 1966-1970.
Ed*ard Teller @ 99
Aah, ET, with patience, comes all good things!!! With that I bid you a fond adieu!!! :-)
Happy Monicalia!
Morning smapdi. Hope folks will be live-blogging the hearing.
Good morning, pups. Today in the NYT it’s MoDo on Al Gore, and Thomas Friedman who thinks any foreign student who earns a PhD in an American university should be offered citizenship:
http://mgpaquin.wordpress.com/
Coffee and tea are all ready. Because so many of us are disappointed about Congress collapsing and giving Shrub his blank check I went over to Krispy Kreme for a selection of their best. I can’t decide between a jelly donut or a chocolate-covered cream-filled. Hmm… maybe I’ll just have both…
Loo Hoo. @ 103
Yep
CSPAN-3 too
Mack @ 105
Work. But I actually may have called in sick if I were to get CSPAN-3. I get 1 and 2…
Marion, I think I’ll have garlic Parmesan toast from the Costco.
Mornin’ all!
Iraqi police: Body found in U.S. uniform
The man had been shot in the head and chest, Babil police Capt. Muthana Khalid said. He said Iraqi police turned the body over the U.S. forces.
…
The U.S. military said in an e-mail that it was looking into the report, but could not confirm it.
Mornin’ twolf.
Mornin’, Firepups……..thought for a bit that everybody was sleepin’ in again.
ET mentioned earlier in the thread:
Ed*ard Teller @ 80
Made the same observation here in my state and wonder how much to chalk it up to some modicum of awakening or simply that most people don’t keep their cars (complete w/bumper stickers) as long as I.
Marion -
You’re a dear soul! Yes, plez………a KK might help quell the queasy feeling that Monica is gonna be just another dud…….like yesterday.
Nine U.S. warships enter Gulf for training
The assembly off Iran’s coast is largest since the 2003 Iraq war.
Hi Loo Hoo, how are you this fine morning?
Good morning pups!
