Here's an opportunity to help shine a bit of much needed sunshine on a bunch of big, fat lies:
My favorite election suppressor Hans von Spakovsky caught the attention of McClatchy this week-end:
Von Spakovsky, who had been a longtime voting rights activist and elections official in Georgia before serving at Justice, accepted a presidential recess appointment to a Republican slot on the Federal Election Commission in December 2005. He is scheduled to appear at a June 13 confirmation hearing before the Senate Rules and Administration Committee.Calling Orville Reddenbacher.
Here's the committee:
Dianne Feinstein, CA
ChairmanRobert Bennett, UT
Ranking MemberRobert C. Byrd
Ted Stevens
Daniel K. Inouye
Mitch McConnell
Christopher J. Dodd
Thad Cochran
Charles E. Schumer
Trent Lott
Richard J. Durbin
Kay Bailey Hutchison
E. Benjamin Nelson
C. Saxby Chambliss
Harry Reid
Patty Murray
Lamar Alexander
Chuck Hagel
Mark L. PryorI think I'll send along a little note to my senator Dianne Feinstein. And I think it would also be a great opportunity for presidential candidate Chris Dodd to step up and take on this very important issue of vote suppression. I think I'll send him a note too. Chuck Shumer and Harry Reid will obviously want to have a good chat with Hans, as will Dick Durbin, so I'll send along a note to them too. I might even give their offices a jingle before the committee meets just to let them know how much I appreciate that a right wing hit man like Von Spakovsky is thoroughly questioned and hopefully removed from the FEC.
Von Spakovsky has been at the very center of everything the Republicans have been doing to rig the vote for the past decade. He was with VIP when they launched the drive to "purge " the voter rolls in advance of the stolen 2000 election. He was the main hack the Bushies installed in the civil rights division at the Justice Department to set them up for 2004 and beyond. He is now on the FEC, where Bush put him in a recess appointment. He's been busy there too…
If the Democrats want to get to the bottom of the GOP voter suppression program, they might want to prepare for a very intensive hearing. He's one of the top go-to vote rigging guys in the Republican party.
Please take some time to contact members of the committee and express your concerns about Mr. Von Spakovsky and his tendency to see opportunities for voter suppression of Democrats in every public cry of wolf regarding alleged voter fraud just before an election that later turns up as an unsubstantiated, unprosecuted investigative taint on the process.
In other words, no reward for cheaters. Period.
And that includes cheaters that want to worm their way onto the Federal Election Commission where they can do some serious long-term damage long after the Bush regime has headed back to the brush. Maha has even more. Please make a call or two today — this is important.
Think about the relationship between the issue of voter suppression, the pushing of false claims of voter fraud and the firing of USAttys, and add in a dash of Karl Rove cronyism, and you'll see why making a call today is the right thing to do. Do as Digby says…if you think this isn't about the math, you haven't been paying attention.

The dems better not confirm this bastard.
I won’t hold my breath on it doing any good, but I will contact Kay Bailey Hutchinson.
A member of Difi’s staff says the Senator is aware of Hans von Spakovsky not so excellent election adventures.
Hi Christy, you’re on a roll today!
did you get all the laundry done yesterday? Mine’s flapping in the breeze right now. (aren’t I a good citizen?) and who doesn’t love fresh air sheets.
Lordy, what next? It doesn’t seem to matter how many investigatory hearings the dems hold; the Bush administration just shifts its feverish activity to another front. Congress–and public opinion–are irrelevant to them; their obsession is to consolidate power to the point that the next election will make no difference.

Oh, and there is more. DOJ sued the State of NY to try to force NYS into buying new voting machines, wait for it……………..

I wouldn’t be surprised in my neighborhood association had a thing about them. but since you can only see my clothesline if (a) you’re my very cool neighbor or (b) you’re doing helicopter inspections, I am choosing to remain ignorant.
I wonder how many emails and phone calls this guy gets from MC Rove?
I’ve begun calling the Repubs to tell them my thoughts and just one call to the Ranking Chairman to tell him/her that we’ve got their backs. I think contacting the republicans is as important, if not more important, than calling our own.
In this case, June 13 is a long way away, and I will do hand written short notes, which just might be more effective with the republican members than my usual phone call, which I use allatime for the quick turn-around problems that come up.
Shorter post: speak reason to any republican who can hear in the nicest way possible.

Something rotten in Denmark methinks!
dakine01 @ 4
Half the fun in this kabuki theater will be seeing how the GOP defends voter suppression.
John Fund was on Real Time last week, and he’s such a smarmy liar about this stuff – of course, he’s hawking his book, so whaddaya expect.
Hans von Sparkovsky? Good grief! You can’t make this stuff up. If you did, a good editor would blue line it as being over the top.
I will say it once again, these bastards are going to put the ‘Onion’ out of business.
spurious @ 7
Public opinion, and even the opinions of most rank and file democrats, is also irrelevant to washington Democratic leadership, who have taken impeachment ‘off the table’ while pre-emptive nuclear strike on Iran is “on the table”.

Hey Christy,
Thanks for all the great posts and awareness raising today. Isn’t that what journalism and democracy are all about?!
I was finally able to catch up and read the Habeas Corpus post which was so life-affirming to read. As was your make-a-difference post on disadvantaged women and children.
Thank you.

tbsa @ 8
Check your state law. State of Florida, for example, has a law that overrides any community CC&R’s that restrict line drying. I need to do the same thing in MI, since my neighborhood has CC&R against it, too. (Have a work-around, but the solutions is not to need one.)
Perhaps that’s something we ought to consider trying across the country at state level, learn how to cut our teeth on submitting and passing legislation that helps our pocketbooks as well as our environment.

whenever I see his name, my mind sees Spankovsky and I laugh.
I just tried to post a comment to the new article above. Error 404 is all I get.
Guess we’ll no pretty soon what the dems want to send Clusterfuck next on the troop funding issue.
The rumor is that they have taken out the unrelated spending stuff and the timelines- but retain the benchmarks for the Iraqi govt- and will only approve spending through September.
That’s fine in my opinion. They tried to get a “withdraw now” vote and it failed- the votes aren’t there- so if yer gonna approve more war funding- four months is a reasonable time frame to fund- and if yer only funding four months anyway- a TIMELINE is totally irrelevant. In effect, the timeline is built in- “you show results in four months or we cut ya off”.
We’ll see what they really come up with. It’s better to get measures that will draw the most gooper votes possible- otherwise they are only proving their own powerlessness.

that’s a good question.
Faster than a blackbox, how voters are being disenfranchised is actually happening in the Civil Rights Division, Voting Section. It is systematic… using the meme of Fighting the Bogey-man of Voter Fraud (a problem thoroughly debunked, with the Department of Justice’s own numbers). Take a look at the cases the Special Litigation Counsel Robert Popper for the Voting Section of the DOJ has been involved in the past year and half or so: Missouri, Alabama, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Indiana… etc.
Adam Lambert (clammyc) has the lastest in these investigations up Voter Rights: Is Robert Popper the Fox Guarding the Henhouse?Previous stories about the dismantling of Voting Rights are:

“This suit is the culmination of an extensive effort by the Civil Rights Division to ensure timely and full implementation of HAVA. The Division met with representatives from states around the country to appraise and assist with their implementation efforts. As part of this process, the Division closely reviewed New York officials’ steps to comply with HAVA. The Division repeatedly urged to New York to come into compliance on a voluntary basis. As of the January 1, 2006 deadline, however, New York was not close to compliance with either provision.
HAVA was the first federal statute to provide federal funds to states to support reform of federal elections. As the government’s complaint alleges, New York received approximately $221 million to assist its implementation of HAVA’s requirements. This included more than $49 million specifically designated to assist the state replace its lever voting machines. Under HAVA, New York stands to lose these earmarked funds if it fails to replace these machines by the September 2006 primary election. Today’s lawsuit seeks a determination that the State of New York is not in compliance with HAVA’s voting systems and database requirements, and an order requiring the state to submit promptly a plan demonstrating how it will come into full compliance.”

(scuffs toe in embarassment) should have trusted my skepticism when there were no comments yet in Jane’s post that appeared so quickly after this one by Christy.
I’m about to call Sen. Stevens’s office in DC on the June 13 von Spakovsky hearing. Did the latter’s postings under the pseudonym “Publius” violate any protocols or regs for a member of the FEC? Has he made any overt racist comments? I’m not quite sure what would be the most potent argument to make to Stevens’s staff…
Among Republicans (32% of adults registered to vote in the survey), 58% approve of the way Bush is handling his job and 33% disapprove. Among Democrats (35% of adults registered to vote in the survey), 17% approve and 82% disapprove of the way Bush is handling his job. Among Independents (33% of adults registered to vote in the survey), 21% approve and 75% disapprove of the way Bush is handling his job as president.
Overall, 31% of Americans say that they approve of the way George W. Bush is handling the economy, 62% disapprove, and 7% are undecided. Among registered voters, 32% approve and 62% disapprove of the way Bush is handling the economy.
Wow, Bush’s recess appointments are always colorful fellows, aren’t they?
Can anyone confirm if Bush has the authority to recess appoint a cabinet level official, say to the Attorney General position on a long holiday weekend?

That’s how Bush got Fox in as his Ambassador to Belgium — over the long Easter weekend.
Go Jimmy, go!
LITTLE ROCK — Republican presidential candidate and southern Baptist minister Mike Huckabee said Tuesday he will skip a Baptist conference organized by Jimmy Carter after the former president called the Bush administration the “worst in history” in international relations.
TiredFed @ 57
Thanks rwcole and TiredFed. Anyone taking bets whether he does it or not? Can he actually find someone so ethically void, someone who will continue to stonewall and will not protect the constitution in the manner Gonzo has?
He might just keep Gonzo. After all, I don’t think he can be unconfirmed or otherwise thrown out by anyone but the President – am I right on that?
rwcole @ 52
What poll was this? Even the reliably Republican outfit of Rasmussen is now down to 33%. It’s a new low for the Decider there.
Ok, this is totally off topic and somewhat whorish… but I heard a story on my local radio and was astonished to learn about how medical testing has been conducted without consent on trauma victims at many urban hospitals – and many patients have died of heart attacks. I did some research on this, and was surprised at the ethical and possibly legal questions this raises. If you find this interesting, check this out:

Gonzales CAN be impeached…and I’m hoping the House of Representatives does so, real soon now.
landofthefree @ 66
He can be impeached, but that would require 17(because HoJo wouldn’t vote for impeachment) Republiscum Senators to vote against the Decider. I just don’t see that many Republiscums breaking ranks.
The Rev. Joel Hunter of Orlando urges evangelicals to see climate change as a serious religious issue, because “our first order in the Garden was to take care of the Earth.”
Redeem the Vote, a group formed in 2004 to register young evangelicals to vote, is campaigning with black churches in Alabama for capping the interest charges on short-term “payday” loans, which can hit 400 percent a year. The group’s founder, physician Randy Brinson, said he finds that young evangelicals are intensely interested in practical ways to help their communities and are little swayed by issues such as same-sex marriage.

What are the rules for impeaching an AG? Are they the same as for a President? Is it simple majority in the House, followed by 2/3 in the Senate?
OT,
Apparently Monica Goodling is refusing to turn over documents in her possession.
http://rawstory.com/news/2007/….._0522.html
I want to see some disciplinary action from the Congress. Can you imagine having the nuts to tell Conyers “sorry, not gonna do it” ?
From his Thomas Road Baptist Church in Lynchburg, Va., where his funeral will be held Tuesday, Falwell gave evangelicals a strong political voice. But it was often the voice of a sure and angry prophet, as when he blamed the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, in part on “the pagans, and the abortionists, and the feminists, and the gays and the lesbians,” or described warnings about global warming as “Satan’s attempt” to turn the church’s attention from evangelism to environmentalism.
landofthefree @ 66
Sometimes I think Bush is keeping Gonzo on until this weekend so he can make a recess appointment.
Sometimes I think Bush just can.not.allow him to go anywhere.
And as for Georgie Porgie, a one day recess is a recess.

Impeachment is done by the House — we have enough Dems to pass it there. The Senate tries the case, and I think we’d need two-thirds to vote to convict.
If Albertross is impeached AND convicted, he is removed from the office of Attorney General, and may never again be a Federal official. (Not sure if this would kill his pension as well.)
Same here. I have absolute faith that the lever machines work properly.
This election-stealing is becoming a full time job for Rove and Company.

fascinating stuff regarding Gonzo’s impeachment. I have to wonder if this “vote of no-confidence” is a way to test the water, see how many potential impeachment votes are out there. Any news on when/if that will happen?
Back to von Spakovsky (who I never heard of before… it’s amazing what you learn at FDL!), I would think someone who has a bit of odor around them regarding voter fraud might have a tough time getting approved by this Senate. If he is not confirmed, does he serve in the position until a new person is confirmed, or must Bush appoint someone else as an interim replacement? Sorry, I don’t know much about these types of procedures. It used to be that our government worked well, but thanks to Bush, I get to learn all about the loopholes and procedural tricks they play on one another.

Bush could double force by Christmas
Stewart M. Powell, Hearst Newspapers
Tuesday, May 22, 2007
(05-22) 04:00 PDT Washington — The Bush administration is quietly on track to nearly double the number of combat troops in Iraq this year, an analysis of Pentagon deployment orders showed Monday.
The little-noticed second surge, designed to reinforce U.S. troops in Iraq, is being executed by sending more combat brigades and extending tours of duty for troops already there.
The actions could boost the number of combat soldiers from 52,500 in early January to as many as 98,000 by the end of this year if the Pentagon overlaps arriving and departing combat brigades.

didn’t we learn in 2002 that giving bush a blank check for war is a bad thing?

If you are still there: covenants, conditions and restrictions – ways to keep the undesirables out and values up.
Gnome de Plume @ 96
I’m here, and unfortunately, the CC&R didn’t keep THIS undesirable out. ;-)
You have a point, to a degree; half the neighborhood is condominiums, the other half single-family homes. The restrictions limit smallest single family home to 2000 sf; not everybody can afford to build a home that size. There’s also restrictions on landscaping — must have X number of trees of a certain trunk diameter — and again, some people can’t afford that. But I didn’t want to live in a “nude” neighborhood without trees or vegetation for the next 10 years, nor did I want to live with neighbors who would not have pride of ownership to care for the neighborhood’s appearance, even if the restrictions on landscaping make this a matter of worrying over one’s investment. Similar neighborhood a mile over with houses of the same size but no CC&R is naked of trees for nearly two years, and I find that ridiculously irresponsible.
And then there’s the matter of investment: this house is part of my portfolio, both in terms of finances and time. I am choosing to invest in a place where others also choose to carefully tend their investments, rather like choosing to buy into Berkshire Hathaway versus any old mutual fund. I expect my investment to retain value, unlike our previous home we still own that is within walking distance of a Walmart built in the last 10 years. We’ve lost about 20K on that one inside the last 3 years, a hard financial truth due to the changed neighborhood dynamics (lots of homes for sale in that price range glutting the market in this county and increased, excessive traffic due to the Walmart).
I emailed my senator, Patty Murray, re. Hans Von Sycophant. Wd phoning be more effective, you think?
Made the mistake of reading my HIPAA privacy disclosure at the drugstore. How safe I feel to know that my personal health information is fair game for intelligence, counterintelligence and other national security activities naturally including official FBI ratfucking as authorized by the Republican party. Makes me wonder what else Edwards and Hilary sold me out for when they signed the fucking PATRIOT Act without reading it, the shitbags. Fuck em, I’ll write in Lavrentiy Beria.

It’s beginning to look like the only vote-related fraud that has any “teeth” to it is what’s been promulgated by the GOP in an effort to deny others their rights to vote. In other words, yes there has been vote fraud, but it’s all been caused by the GOP. Let’s investigate that as thoroughly as the GOP sought to stop others from voting.
