The study by the state of Texas that concluded immigrants add to the economy, rather than detract from it. The Texas legislature tried to bury the study when they found it told them the opposite of what they wanted to find and trumpet.

I misquoted the study due to poor memory. The study did not address jobs per se, but net effect on the state economy, which, if you extrapolate on it, suggests the immigrant community widens the pie for everyone.

By the way, if you’re not a right wing racist, you can feel free to conclude that I never said you were a right wing racist. I have argued that the anti-immigration movement in America is a racist movement. If that clarifies things for people, I’m glad. It’s actually what I wrote all along.

The talking point that immigration drives down wages costs US jobs is a fantasy made up by people who want others to believe it. Ask yourself: why do they sell this tale, and why is the public willing to believe it, without any resort to actual data? ”

Well Pach, my good man, you’re just flat wrong. Earlier in these comments I referred to the writings of a Mr. “Barbaro”. Oops. I butchered his name. The correct name is Jordan Barab. You remember him, right?

In his FDL article of June 6, 2006 he cites WITH APPROVAL the findings of the U.S. Department of Agriculture Economic Research Service as well as the AFL-CIO. Both entities conclude that the influx of illegals has injured the wages of the AMERICAN worker. As we say down here in Texas at the poker table: read ‘em and weep.

Please attend to the correction already made above to the comment you cite, which was a typo.

By the way, I thought I had corrected an error in my above comment, but it apparently did not save. It should read:

That correction is consistent with the point made in the first short paragraph.

Gotta link? ; ) Since you mentioned Texas, I can tell you that construction jobs in this state are almost all had by illegal immigrants now. Those were, good paying (Union, some) trades jobs. Now that construction jobs have taken a severe hit here, it hasn’t changed the ‘official’ unemployment rate. Why is that? ; )

I’ll try to find the link in time for the discussion on immigration likely to come on Monday.

If this country was serious about getting after “illegals,” Bush and all his claque would be in jail. Brown people are the moment’s convenient scapegoats.

A pox on the liberal house, including Kennedy and the bill’s supporters. Latinos are tired of the patronizing, “it’s the best we can do” attitude. There’s no will to fight the knuckle draggers, who are the people bringing “exreme” pressure on the politicians to end the immigrant “crisis”. Kennedy didn’t learn his lesson when Bush blindsided him on the education bill. How the hell he can agree with Bush and give Bush some positive press on this monstrosity is beyond me,

There’s a war on immigrants at the moment. It won’t stop until decent politicians get elected, and I don’t see that happening even in the coming year. Obama supports the wall. Emmanuel and those who think like him will likely survive. This “reform”, with its path to legalization some years down the line, is a cover for the continued militarization of the border.

At 73, myself and more of the older members of my extended family across five states are seriously considering leaving the Democratic party, or simpy not voting. One does finally get tired of the lesser of two evils routine.

Gah…I agree with “what part of ‘illegal’ ” don’t y’all understand? Here’s me, slaving my nuts off to get a degree, then my employer spends the best part of two grand to get me a visa, followed by a couple of thousand out of my own pocket to get a Greencard, and a couple of years later I have what amounts to provisional permanent residency. Or I could have hopped the border with my wife in contravention of law and had her pop out a rugrat, as a consequence of which I’d have the bleeding hearts behind me saying “Don’t deport him and split up his family”. In most things I am, to say the least, liberal, but this subject makes my blood boil. I cannot think of a single good argument for defending someone who crosses the border illegally, when the rest of the world has to work its bollocks off to get here. Immigration reform is undoubtedly needed, but this bill ain’t it.

There is no data that immigration is costing US jobs. None, nada, zip. In fact, states like Texas that have studied the matter in a comprehensive way have found that there is no effect.

The talking point that immigration drives down wages is a fantasy made up by people who want others to believe it. Ask yourself: why do they sell this tale, and why is the public willing to believe it, without any resort to actual data?

As I pointed out earlier, Caesar Chavez was one of the people who sold this tale. What do you think his motive was?

In the summer of 1970 I picked grapes for one day just to see what it was like near Fresno. I worked my ass off in the hot sun for 10 hours and made six bucks! The guy that “hired” me was a bi lingual ‘contractor’ for the grower. The contractor hired us ‘Mexicans’ (I’m not, not that that matters) was his ‘funnel’. Here we are, 37 years later and it’s the same deal all over again. The employers for the most part hire illegals via a ‘contractor’. Plausible deniability, ha. Same game, different decade, and now, century.

Mr. StormRyder says:
“f the point is to keep illegal aliens out, then why would you have a system to “funnels” them into waiting border guards? Doesn’t it make more sense to stop them from crossing the border in the first place.

Or is it you’d rather see lots of arrests and people in concentration camps than actually stem illegal immigration?

Honestly, think before you type.”

I have no interest in seeing mass arrests and concentration camps. If you’d study the geography of the southern border (which you haven’t) you’d understand that there are some open spaces not-so-ameniable to walls. The UAV solution is designed to cover gaps in a barrier…gaps of some 20-30 (or more) miles in length.

Human nature will dictate that the illegals will flock to the open gaps and attempt to penetrate. The UAV’s will effectively counter the gaps. The gaps will also save in construction expense and upkeep. This is also “military defense 101″ which you also don’t have knowledge of.

You, and everyone, are of course always free to dispute my policy ideas. But you should dispute with logic, instead of name-calling. In summary, please in the future, THINK, before you respond.

    Pach says:
” There is no data that immigration is costing US jobs. None, nada, zip. In fact, states like Texas that have studied the matter in a comprehensive way have found that there is no effect.

The talking point that immigration drives down wages costs US jobs is a fantasy made up by people who want others to believe it. Ask yourself: why do they sell this tale, and why is the public willing to believe it, without any resort to actual data? “

Pach, I usually agree with you on various and sundry issues you bring forth. I enjoy your intellect. But on this immigration issue, alas, I think we’re about as far apart as the Mississippi River is long! Oh well, it happens.

Oh! Before I go. Pach already knows the following, but in case anyone wanders along and asks “who is/was this Barab character that Ghostman talks of?

Well, he had to leave FDL a few months after the 11/06 election. Mr. Barab took a job with the DEMOCRATICALLY controlled US House Education and Labor Committee. He serves as a staffer there…and serves them well. They don’t hire dummies for that committee! Best to all, and certainly to you Pach.

Why is that? ; )

By the way, I thought I had corrected an error in my above comment, but it apparently did not save. It should read:

There is no data that immigration is costing US jobs. None, nada, zip. In fact, states like Texas that have studied the matter in a comprehensive way have found that there is no effect.

The talking point that immigration <strike>drives down wages</strike> costs US jobs is a fantasy made up by people who want others to believe it. Ask yourself: why do they sell this tale, and why is the public willing to believe it, without any resort to actual data?
