Well, well, well. Via Romenesko, we learn that one of our favorite fact-free Righty screechers has gotten herself permanently locked out in the yard over at The News Hour with Jim Lehrer. The clip in question is posted above, and frankly, for Morgan (whose rancor and biliousness are all the way off the charts on a good day), I think it's pretty mild. All she did was serially interrupt and talk over Iraq War veteran John Soltz to accuse him undermining the troops and call him a cheerleader for Al Qaeda. Is that such a crime?
Let's go to the transcript:
JON SOLTZ: Well, we are the troops. And there was nothing worse than when I was in combat in Iraq and a soldier that I sent on a convoy was killed, and I had to hear my president, the man who never had the courage to serve in Vietnam, entice my enemy with words like, "Bring it on."
MELANIE MORGAN: Oh, please!
The Bush Dead-Enders hate when you mention that, because it points out the central, incurable contradiction at the core of their movement. The only people left who support the war are the people who won't be called on to fight it, have never seen combat, and never will. That's why Morgana hisses like a vampire splashed with holy water there. Soltz just pressed her Big Red Button. And as we know from Meningitis Markdown's other talk show appearances, she's never met an opposing point too important for her to interrupt and talk over or a reputation too sterling to spit on.
JON SOLTZ: So this is a very important thing. This week, VoteVets.org is launching a major massive campaign component, or not campaign, but an education of sorts, where we're running commercials across the country. And we're not just using Iraq war veterans. We're having General Batiste, the commander of the First Infantry Division in Iraq.
Of course, President Bush says he listens to the commanders on the ground, but General Batiste, going in to four different states, where there's four different senators, and House districts across the entire country, saying, "Mr. President, you don't listen to the commanders in the field. You've put our Army and our Marine Corps in peril."
And it's up to these senators to protect America, and not George Bush. And that's what this is about. This is about victory against al-Qaida.
MELANIE MORGAN: No, this is exactly what it's about, Mr. Soltz.
JON SOLTZ: We are a pro-troop organization. We fought for this country…
MELANIE MORGAN: We are a pro-troop organization, as well.
Except of course, when it comes to bringing them home, providing them with adequate medical care and other support services, and really, anything other than marching them off to the twin meat-grinders that are the failed actions in Iraq and Afghanistan and ensuring that they'll be pinned down there indefinitely.
JON SOLTZ: … and we do not support — excuse me, ma'am. Excuse me.
MELANIE MORGAN: What it is about for you is political games.
Right, of course, the totally tired Bushie Talking Point about "political theater", which TBogg neatly dispensed with ages ago. None of this is out of the ordinary for Manichea Morass. The last few months have more than adequately demonstrated that there is no limit to how low she will stoop in her efforts to demonize any and all Americans who are advocating a rational, practical approach to Preznint Grabby Baby's Endless War. What's different this time, it appears, is the venue. The News Hour is widely regarded as a sort of higher ground than cesspools like Hannity, Meet the Press, and John Gibson's daily spew. Back to Romenesko:
Here are a few e-mails that PBS ombud Michael Getler received after Melanie Morgan (left) appeared on "The NewsHour with Jim Lehrer": "'The NewsHour' is where I go to get away from screaming heads. Melanie Morgan was a disgrace to the program." …"The yelling, interrupting and repeated rudeness by the talk show woman is exactly the kind of thing that keeps me from watching other news/talk shows." …"We finally pushed the mute button on our remote." The show's producer promises "you will never see that person on our program again." (Morgan once said that Times executive editor Bill Keller should be jailed for treason.)
Posted at 2:25:46 PM
To have included Melanie Morgan to discuss the Iraq mess was a distinct dilution of the integrity that I believe PBS generally represents. Her qualifications to speak are questionable and her interruptive manner not in keeping with your standards. Landisville, PAI'm disturbed by the NewsHour's new low; providing a television platform for an extreme right-wing attack demagogue, spewing abuse and jingoistic vitriol. Of course I'm referring to Melanie Morgan's demeaning and disparaging ad hominem attacks on your other guest, along with a slanderous impugning of the patriotism and motives of any and all non-like-minded folks. Jerry Swingle, Durango, COPlease let The NewsHour with Jim Lehrer know that some viewers were aghast at tonight's broadcast when Judy Woodruff let Melanie Morgan of Move Forward America repeatedly interrupt Judy and the other interviewee. Rudeness and a lack of civility are characteristic of some other so-called news programs, but not The NewsHour! We finally pushed the mute button on our remote. Carolyn Fox, Mount Angel, ORThis evening (May 8) The NewsHour carried a piece that purported to be an interview of two grassroots organizations on the course of the Iraq war. On the Bush side was "Move America Forward." The spokesperson sounded much more like a Republican front organization than a genuine grassroots one. There is nobody with an impressive resume on their web page. I would hope that PBS would check the funding and principles before putting someone like that on the air. Ben Ansbacher, Burlington, NC
Since the program is produced live, we can't do much to eliminate rude guests from your television screen once the segment has begun; what we can do is guarantee you will never see that person on our program again.

Hi TRex!
To constitute depraved indifference, the defendant’s conduct must be ’so wanton, so deficient in a moral sense of concern, so lacking in regard for the life or lives of others, and so blameworthy as to warrant the same criminal liability as that which the law imposes upon a person who intentionally causes a crime. Depraved indifference focuses on the risk created by the defendant’s conduct, not the injuries actually resulting.
Evening, gang!
How is everyone?
(silent, yet elegant in its simplicity and no splash swan dive into the lake)
evening everyone. TRex,dayam fine send off for that skanky potty mouth.
Evening All. A glorious spring day here in the northern Rockies.
Evenin’ TRex!
TRex @ 6
in severe pain, therapod. i just made the mistake of watching the first ten minutes of TDS. it will undoubtedly be on C L and all i can do is tell the rest of the lakers, if you never watch any other daily show clips in your life, watch that one.
hint: it involves juju bees and latino male soap stars in drag. Rudy is already jealous…
Sigh.
I miss cooking for Jane and throwing the squeaky toy for the poodles.
Too bad I need my day job as badly as I do, or I’d already be packing up to head to Jane’s for another week until Marcy arrives.
TRex @ 11
as i’m new to the lake, can i ask what your day job is?
another show i have never watched. :(
Aw, TRex, tell you what — we’ll run your show for you so you can go back up and stay with Jane.
Amy Winehouse will be in heavy rotation ;-)
TRex @ 6
Hiya TRex!!!!
SnarKassandra @ 13
if you can get steaming video, the previous night’s high points are usually at crooks and liars the next day.
btw, excellent post on DOD censorship!
I am a public radio announcer.
You can listen here right now. I’m playing Max Bruch’s First Symphony.
But you’ll need a non-Mozilla browser to hear it.
Great Post Giant Lizard Boy!!
Melanie would have loved the Third Reich. I am very happy watching her conservofacist world crumble. A toast to Spocko who helped her on her way!
Alfred Kelgarries @ 16
OK. I usually skip over those and just watch Olbermann or Jon Stewart.
TRex!
love your write up on Morgana, I witnessed that shocking display myself. lord amighty! What was Woodruff thinking? (guess nothing, eh?)
Oh Suzanne I’ve been waiting for a swan dive!
TRex @ 17
i shall contribute to your station’s next pledge drive. the therapod must have job security!
SnarKassandra @ 13
Actually they stream the show (or at least clips from it)the next day on their website.
LoudounLib @ 14
I got the new Tori CD on the way home from CT and I must confess that I’ve gotten behind in my Amy Winehouse listening. Tori has kind of eclipsed all other muses for a few days.
Maybe I’ll put on some Amy when I get home tonight.
DrDick @ 22
is it something i SHOULD be watching?
Well, well, well. Someone’s finally realizing there’s a difference between screaming wingnuts and actual commentators. Atrios commented a few weeks ago that at some point the real journalistic organizations would have to figure out how to deal with the likes of FOX Noise (sorry, can’t find link).
AZ Matt @ 18
TO SPOCKO!!
Hear, hear!
My goodness, an actual ombudsman. I wonder if WaPo saw/heard that story.
TRex @ 17
oh, and how is the battle to save internet radio going? is it time to go back in the trenches?
I have wondered for years why Bush was not called out on his “bring it on” comment. Is it not treason to incite the enemy durring a time of war? And this is comming from the Commander in Chief of the armed forces in America. That and the hysterical skit looking for WMD for the Correspondents Dinner a few years ago. So very funny. If a democrat had done either of these things they would have been literally tarred and feathered by a bunch of frothing GOP goons. Yet Bush can say and do such things and there’s nary a peep. Go figure.
Listening to the Texas Tornados at the moment! Clearly a great swinging group! A toast to Freddy!! I sure he won’t have to worry about running into Falwell.
Hey TRex,
I understand Kelly O’Donnell asked Bush point blank about Gonzo’s late nite visit to Ashcroft’s hospital room. He just blew her off.
How long do you think he and Gonzo can ignore the question?
SnarKassandra @ 24
Everyone should watch The Daily Show (best news reporting on TV), but I think you are already catching many of the best bits at C & L.
TRex @ 6
Doing much better, now that my computer is out of the shop. I’ve spent the last 8 days checking email at the library, because my phone lines were static-y at the same time my modem decided to die. The computer people pointed fingers at the phone company (”Fix the lines!”), and the phone company pointed right back and said “They’re fine – fix the damn computer.”
More than a couple $$$ later, along with a pile of aggravation, I’m back at the ‘Lake.
Aaaaaahhhhhh . . .
Lynn @ 29
When the Revolution comes, the whole modern press apparatus is going straight into the dumpster. Not that they’ll notice. They’re shockingly oblivious to anything beyond the narrow confines of their tiny little world.
Welcome back Peterr.
AZ Matt @ 30
Yeah, I have several of their CDs. Actually cover quite a range of music including Tejano.
Suzanne @ 35
Seconded! We’ve missed you.
DrDick says

It is the PBS one I don’t watch.
TRex @ 23
I can’t speak for the new Tori, but I can recommend the new Feist :-)
DrDick @ 36
Una mas cerveza! una mas cerveza, that is all i could say! Please let me go away!
SnarKassandra @ 38
Ah, the Newshour. I do watch it most nights, but they have been increasingly been infected by the rightwing poison. They are not as bad as most news reports.
Ohhhhhh, the new Tori is awesome, sprawling, all-encompassing. She’s really outdone herself this time.
Peterr @ 33
I missed you!
DrDick @ 41
I get my news on the blogs, Air America & Head On radio.
Hello all. Stopping by on my way to catching up on the day’s news. I had asked for no bombshells until I returned. I’ll see if anybody obliged me.
Had an incredibly annoying day that kept me away from FDL completely. The only thing that brought me a smile is Comey’s testimony on The Daily Show. Ironic that this is the only way to insure the message is spread beyond those who already care.
TRex @ 37
The feeling is definitely mutual.
Of all the times for this to happen, this was NOT a good time. Among other things, I had agreed to do a couple of posts to cover Christy’s vacation, and then had to cancel out when everything hit the fan.
That Newshour segment was my first (and now, happily my last) exposure to Melanie Morgan.
and this tidbit:
HELLO? It sounded like like a spokesperson for a Republican front organization because IT WAS a spokesperson for a Republican front organization. [somewhere about google hit #3 for ‘Move America Forward’ will get you the SourceWatch lowdown on that GOP shill operation.]
Hi Peterr. Welcome back.
DrDick @ 41
Still, there’s been a distinct change.
or is me who’s changed? I sure am seeing the MSM soo differently these days.
Hi Peterr, sorry about your computer problems — what a pain…but welcome back!
Don’t forget The Daily Show and Colbert, Cassie. You can watch the show over at Comedy Central dot com if it is on too late for you to watch (thinking about school nites)
Suzanne @ 52
yep! i do.
Expect the screeching wingnut W-enabling GOP media whores rhetoric and mannerisms become more unhinged by the day
And of course, the only proper response is as much public mockery and withering ridicule as possible, because if there’s anything Taliban-sympathizing jerkoffs like Morgan hate even more than physical pain, it’s being laughed at by those they consider inferior
Everyone’s entitled to be stupid from time to time, but Morgan clearly abuses the privilege-Don’t know who said that first, but love using it wherever possible
Look at This Crazy STory!
Guy pops out of river looking like commando to make boaters wet pants
SnarKassandra @ 44
A good mix there. The Newshour generally does long format (about 15-20 minutes each) stories about the news of the day/week. Gives more in depth information on some important stories. Unfortunately, the conservatives are rather over represented on the program most of the time.
Why do women do that to their lips? I’m talkin’ about the words that come out as well as the cosmetic aspect.
I posted this on the last thread about the good Rev. Phelps. Eeesh…what a bunch-o losers.
SnarKassandra @ 55
from the story:
“Benjamin says this is no way to pick up chicks, however. He says two gals he popped up to startle were not impressed. “There were two girls in a canoe and they were hot, so I figured I’d introduce myself,” he said. “They raised up their paddle and they were about to hit me over the head. I had to get back in the water before they hit me.”
YA THINK?????!!!!
Evening Suzanne and TRex.
OMG- Colbert said his guest will be Tom Delay. Is that true or a joke?
SnarKassandra @ 55
Wingnut/gun nut ideas of fun. In desperate need of therapy, I would say.
I’ve actually been turning off Thom Hartmann (the only AAR show left I listen to) in disgust because he has wignuts on who start screaming stupidity. I don’t need to waste my beautiful mind on unreasonable and unreasoning people.
solai @ 61
the graphic says “FAKE INTERVIEW”. i think its a splice job.
“Benjamin says this is no way to pick up chicks, however. Before he came to the PBS position, Getler WAS the ombudsman at the WaPo. They know him quite well, and the serious journalists there probably miss him.
Deb Howell, OTOH . . .
Good evening dear friends.
Hi LooHoo
TexBetsy @ 68
Good evening, dear.
And you too, Cassie!
Hey Betsy, how are ya?
TexBetsy @ 68
Evening, Betsy. How’s things in Texas?
Loo Hoo @ 57: Women go to plastic surgeons to get the bee-stung puffed up lips because they think it makes men go wild with passion upon seeing their lips.

I don’t know, when ‘Jaws’ was popular everyone thought it was a hoot to swim with fake shark fins at fresh water lake beaches.
I have a new post up called Restoring Freedom of the Press in the Military. It is about YouTube and stuff being banned on military servers.
Hi everybody. I sometimes watch The Newshour, here in Aus. Must have missed that one (thank gawd!).
Of a similar vain,

I am doing well. Started a new PT today and my injections are still giving some relief. One more week of school and then I will be mostly off for the summer.
Alfred Kelgarries @ 77
Were you the one who was talking to me about that yesterday?
Betsy and Cassie! Glad to see you both have your own computers now!
SnarKassandra @ 75
I left a comment but it’s in moderation.
SnarKassandra @ 38
Try it, you might like it!
Good deal Betsy, glad to hear that :-)
SnarKassandra @ 75
Good post, Cassie. I think the Bushies are afraid that more of the truth about Iraq and Afghanistan will get out.
SnarKassandra @ 75
exilente poste, Cassie!
SnarKassandra @ 75
It is very good Cassie.
SnarKassandra @ 79
yes i was and you have summed it up beautifully! you even caught the bit about the iraqi ban which i missed! you, maam, have a future in this biz if it catches your fancy. i work for a publishing biz (tech books) and one of my jobs is copy editing. i know good writing when i see it and yours is good copy. please keep it up!
Good stuff there, Cassie.
Is Cassie the Emptywheel of the future? Discuss!

Hey!
TexBetsy @ 89
Oh dear, in the de Plume family we have four computers and two people.
Thank you. Did you see my other site also? Political, but also cartoons and other things that I don’t but on YouthInkLeft.
Sunday night, I made Jane and myself fresh pesto and sauteed some chicken with it. I’m starving right now and would just about put somebody’s eye out for some of that chicken.
I know, totally OT, but this theropod’s tummy is rumblin’!
Hey TRex, isn’t your birthday coming up soon? In the next couple of weeks if my memory is correct?
The NewsHour is a purveyor of Conventional Beltway Wisdom. It has many conservative voices and few liberal ones. You only have to look at the Mark Shields and David Brooks end of the week roundups. It’s the NewsHour’s idea of balance: a wishy washy moderate conservative up against a goofy conservative. Every once in a while someone will break through with a liberal point of view and my reaction is always: how did that one get on?
karen allen @ 73
Apparently. :>))))) etc.
TexBetsy @ 89
Huh-oh. Sounds like we need to check into thin clients and virtualization for you. I’ll put that on my list…that way 4 people could use 2 computers.
Please, y’all, remember to close your tags.Makes me dizzy to look at so many Italiacs
Peterr, thanks. I couldn’t remember her name–Deb Howell. I just erase memories of her.
breaking on think progress:
gonzales/card discussion of nsa activities without proper security protections is “the one you worry about” in terms of violating the law involving disclosure of classified information.
While normally the DOJ investigates SENATORS over this sort of problem, now THE SENATE COMMITTEE IS CONSIDERING INVESTIGATING THE BREACH, A CLASS A FELONY PUNISHABLE BY TEN YEARS IN FEDERAL PRISON.

Yes, May 30th. I will be 39.
I may have to put together an Amazon Wish List in honor of the occasion.
(stuffing leftover roasted garlic chicken into the modem for TRex)
Early birthday cake for TRex.
Hey TRex, thought of you this afternoon. Colorado Pen catalog came in the mail. ;-)
Horrible evening. Just had one of those moments with the right-leaning spouse where I question my sanity for living with him while I question his sanity for being so patently uneducated about current affairs.
Who’s Karl Rove, indeed.
My throat hurts from yelling.
That John Soltz is one hot human specimen.
SnarKassandra @ 93
i have it now. regrettably i am about to return to the spirit realm for regeneration in my borg bod until tomorrow. hopefully i’ll see you here then…(poof noise as spook disappers)
Alfred Kelgarries @ 101
It is PAST time!
from the article: “The penalty for “knowingly and willfully” disclosing information “concerning the communication intelligence activities of the United States” carries a penalty up to 10 years in prison under U.S. law. “It’s the one you worry about, says the government official familiar with the program.”
Ohmygosh, TRex…I’m old enough to be, uh, your older sister…
TRex @ 102
39 billion?
LoudounLib @ 108
Uh, he’s only five years older than my son. ;-(
Good news. Karl’s beloved voter id law seems to have died even in the Texas lege. Link here

TRex @ 102
Please, not as large as the Amazon.
OMG Dr Dick, I’m older than I thought! ;-)
Alfred Kelgarries @ 101
I’m crossing my fingers right now
Chinese Chicken in Garlic Sauce for tonight’s midnight snack.
This being the first and last time(I hope) of seeing and hearing Ms. Morgan and before reading Trex’s post my first thought was: did she have to re-learn enunciation after having all that goop injected into her lips?
AZ Matt @ 30
“Hey, Baby, Que Paso?

LOVE Doug And Augie and Flaco and Freddy.,
They did SO much good stuff.
She’s About A Mover, indeed . . ;-)
Rayne @ 105
You see why I love being single?
Rayne @ 105
I just noticed the “get FDL via email” button up on the right margin bar. Might it help your throat to put his email in, and let TRex & Jane do the yelling for you?
OMG. Did anyone see Colbert/Delay. Do these guys not know what they’re getting themselves into when they go on his show? DeLay just had a frozen smile on while Colbert embarrassed him. Put up his mug shot. Then split screen w/ Jesus on the other side. Introduced him as a former bug exterminator.
Delay should have listened to Rahm.
Loo Hoo, I concur ;-)
Loo Hoo. @ 119
Rule one for progressive relationships: Never date Repugs and do not even think about marrying them.
larue @ 118
AZMatt, tell me it ain’t so!
Thanks, Suzanne. I think I’m going to slip a little vanilla liqueur in that tea, too. Too wound up after that exchange to go to bed.
Hey, reminder for you folks, on calendar for tomorrow 18-MAY-07:
– Deadline for 20 agencies to turn over information related to political presentations using government resources
– Deadline for the WH and Pentagon to turn over any documents relating to Pat Tillman’s death
You can check next week’s key Senate and House Judiciary meetings by going to Google Calendar and looking for entries on raising.blinds -at- gmail.com. I’m trying to keep that one updated with those committees’ meetings as well as Waxman’s Oversight Committee.
Silly me. I already made an Amazon Wish List and forgot about it.
Here it is.
This old-ish progressive has got to scoot — working all weekend :-(
Good night all, and have fun!
Rayne @ 105
it’s funny. i recently discovered that my brother and his son arethe reality-denying bush-supporting neocon types who leave you stunned with the ideas they have no shame or hesitation articulating. staggering stuff. these folks are well-educated, and should know better.
then i have also found that, in dating, the one absolute deal-killer for me is if the date is a bushie, or gop-leaner. i have found intellectual honesty to be absolutely essential in a relationship, and it seems so damn obvious that you have to be willfully drinking the kool-aid to buy all the lies that are pumped out.
in the end, it comes down to politics. who knew?
Rayne @ 125
I bet THEY don’t lose 20 pts for every day late!
LoudounLib @ 127
Night LL. Your boss must be a Repug.
Botox OD on aisle 7…. blech.
Ha! Dr Dick, you are correct!
Happy Birthday, TRex!
Hey TRex, have you seen/heard the new Rufus Wainwright video?
Peterr @ 120
Ooh, tempting, but no, I wouldn’t do that to him, too many emails already that he doesn’t read. Although the idea of Jane and TRex beating a tattoo on his consciousness is appealing…
DrDick @ 123
Swing voter, tho’, and one that makes damn fine babies. Even ‘fessed up to voting for Kerry, and has been asking too many questions about HRC for my taste.
It seems we repeat ourselves often.
Rayne, Waxman sent off another letter about Tillman, this one about “The panel’s chairman, Rep. Henry Waxman, D-Calif., and ranking GOP member, Rep. Tom Davis, R-Va., asked Gen. Carter F. Ham about remarks by Lt. Col. Ralph Kauzlarich questioning the religious faith of Tillman’s parents.”
Rayne @ 135
Well, there is no accounting for love, I suppose. As to the HRC situation, just confirms my longstanding assertion that she is really a moderate Republican (an otherwise extinct species).
marshen @ 106
I concur.
Heading home, gang.
See you in a bit.
Night y’all. Back tomorrow and I can stay later.
And don’t forget to visit http://www.votevets.org/, donate, and see the new Wesley Clark ad: “The Helicopters Never Came.”
SnarKassandra @ 140
Night Cassie. Keep up the good work at your blog (and at school).
Rayne @ 135
Maybe you’ll just have to send him selected rants on your own, like a “TRex’s Greatest Hits” collection.
Peterr @ 143
That would be a rather extensive collection, don’t you think?
When I heard about this, my immediate thought was “what they hell were they thinking?” I mean, it’s not like it would take more than a google on MM’s name to find out that she’s a Rush clone and not a grassroots leader.
But as we’ve discussed the conservative slant on the NewsHour (like all current network and cable news political shows), it occurs to me that it’s probably a direct result of that. In fact, few of the conservative guests they have on would qualify if they were judged on the record of their predictions or the factual basis for most of their statements. Once you’ve had to give that up, trying to filter out the beyond-the-pale from the merely self-deluded becomes more difficult.
SnarKassandra @ 141
Good night, Cassie. And good evening, briefly, to everyone else…
Suzanne @ 137
Oh. No. He. Dint.
Some asswipe actually questioned their faith???
I don’t care if the asswipe is in a uniform, that’s beyond the pale. Hell, doing it in a uniform makes it even worse.
DrDick @ 138
Look at it this way: in this family, there is one right-leaner and a progressive, yielding one voting left-leaner (stepson) and two solid hardcore progressives (voting in 5 and 8 years respectively).
Nice memetic drift.
If Melanie were wearing a pink tutu, you’d swear she was competing to be Paris’ Poodle, and with the same result she had with the News Hour.

Moderate Republicans have, in Darwinian fashion, mutated into conservative (corporatist?) Democrats.
But Huchabee, Tancredo, and who the hell cares don’t believe in them.
Rayne @ 147
Would seem to be a left dominant gene pool. Perhaps there is hope for the human race after all. For the record my father was also a moderate Republican.
DrDick @ 144
In the general sense, most certainly. But for Rayne’s spouse, she could probably narrow it down by focusing on one or two issues, then combing the TRex archives for some classics.
Think of it as the political, web-based version of a mix tape. However, I would not recommend websurfing while driving.
SnarKassandra @ 24
Well, I suggest talking it over with Betsy, but my first impulse was a resounding YES!
From the NYT’s:
Another Bush Fool
Hey,
Just arrived.
Just watched the video.
Where’d they get “Hot Lips” O’Houlohan?
I know the promo for M*A*S*H was “Is Hot Lips better than self abuse?”
In this case I think not.
Oh. No. He. Dint.
Worm dirt is what he called Tillman.
Peterr @ 151
Oops, that is the downside. He’s a Crackberry addict, had to snatch the damned thing out of his hands this weekend because he was checking his mail while driving. Gah.
He couldn’t handle the TRexinator on the road.
AZ Matt @ 153
They are trying to break the whole damn govt!
Suzanne @ 155
I think that epithet applies much better to he who spoke it.
TexBetsy @ 157
I fear that they are damn close to succeeding in that.
Rayne @ 147
Read it and retch.
Rayne @ 105
I used to date a woman who is still, mind-bogglingly, a Republican. Believes in gay marriage, abortion rights, but virulently anti-immigrant and strangely thinks George Bush is a great guy. Also adores Diane Feinstein.
Talking politics with her made my head hurt, and while we didn’t break up over politics, I’m sure it didn’t help.
We are still friends, and we simply stay away from the subject.
It’s hard to have good political discussions when you can’t get a common set of facts to start with.

this is exactly why i smile sadly when i hear about how incompetent the bushies are. only in the things they WANT to be.
they hate government. so if they help make government look bad by poor performance, then that helps the overall goal of convincing others that government cannot be a force for good, or reliable, or trusted.
why on earth would anyone think they would do a good job?

I feel your pain! My spouse, whom I love despite his political deficiencies, is not only a rethug, but a Texas rethug at that. And the sour cherry on top of that cowpie is the fact that he is also gainfully employed by the brain-washing petro-chem industry, so a double-whammie. Thank goodness that my parents’ genes delivered red hair unto me – that red-headed spice usually helps to keep my husband in check on political issues!
Thank goodness for the lake where I always sit and enjoy the view while sipping my a.m. coffee. I am usually a lurker, but I thought I would let you know that I understand and sympathize wrt the unprogressive spouse.

Heh. Thanks, I appreciate the sentiment. But I figure after the first 24 years together, we’re a bit beyond that, have managed to work around this issue for that long with only a few arguments about politics every year. I think the issue for us is really about values — do we share the same ones, enough to be together?
Biggest obstacle is that he’s not a reader, but he never has been. It’s likely a genetic issue, can see my daughter being very much like him. Strong technical gifts, math and science, but simply struggles to sit and read. Hence the lack of current affairs knowledge and resulting weaker political choices.

Sounds like two worlds even though you’ve been together for 24 years.
Thinking Southerner (195) — too funny, you have an eight-year-old progressive? My nine-year-old son went with me last year to a Democratic Party meeting; they all made a big fuss over him, shaking his hand and thanking him for coming to the meeting. He told the chair that he was going to run for president, because he was sure he could already do a better job than Bush.

I was a bit freaked a couple of years ago when I googled my ex-boyfriend (long since married) and found he’d put in at least some of the paperwork to run in the CA recall election – as a Libertarian. He was a Repug when I was going out with him, but not a wingnut. (Or at least not that I ever noticed. We didn’t talk politics, just computers. And science fiction.)

Hi gunga,
Yes this was my first and last exposure to fatlips. I was SHOCKED to hear this on NewsHour and promptly came to cry on the broad shoulders of FDL.
Strengthened, I then went directly to the cesspool called Move America Forward to see who was on the board of directors…all GOPheads. Contrast that with the board of VoteVets–actual military people!!
The one glimmer of truth was MFA said they represent “some” Gold Star and Blue Star families. Heck, everyone in America is a Blue Star family.
I thought Jon Soltz did a great job of standing his ground that night. And I love their ads. So di-rect.

A couple of weeks ago my F-in-L,who is a hard-core rethug and good ole southern baptist (I know, what fishing hole was I poking around in when I went looking for love), came to visit. My F-in-L, who loves to see my ears turn red, began discussing politics with me. I almost died laughing when my son told his grandpa “George Bush is full of crap.” No lie – damned that boy is ahead of the game.
Thinking S, so did your father-in-law’s ears turn red?
sporkovat @ 217
Maybe Dobson, before the 2008 election, will be met with the same “irrevocable decision” that has befallen poor Rev. Jerry.
Thinking Southerner I am glad you are here. Nice to hear tales from the dark side. I had uncles who used to love to rile me with their right wing views back in the ’70’s when all us college kids were DFH’s.
Thinking Southerner @ 217
From the mouths of babes, eh?
Mine has been asking why we can’t just fire the dorks — had to revisit the Constitution this past week to tell him how impeachment works.
I rather envy him; my folks never talked about politics, and they didn’t discuss Nixon’s impeachment or Watergate or the assassinations of MLK or RFK or the Vietnam War, even though all happened while I was in grade and middle school. My spouse really isn’t unlike them, in this respect.
Thinking Southerner @ 220
If there is a God, they will all “see the light” and feel the heat in the near future.
Miss Melanie is a bit of an adrenaline junkie.
I think that’s what disturbs me about her the most – her entire political world view is pretty much based on the fact that she can gin up a brawl pretty much any time she wants to by being a wingnut. I suppose it’s cheaper than being a degenerate gambler, if you measure it by her bank account and not by the lives lost.
And no, I wouldn’t go there if she wasn’t the woman who wrote the book about Cindy Sheehan’s sex life.
Loo Hoo@199
My wife and I have absolutly nothing in common. She never has any interest for the work I do, nor my politics. She wouldn’t understand any of it even if I could begin to explain it.
Her physical injuries have her nearly homebound, and psycologicly, she seems to be stuck somewhere in the early 1970’s.
Frankly, she thinks I’m nuts.
But the Love we share is eternal and knows no comprehension. It defies logic that it’s lasted these 23 years, but the universe knows it can lean on our Love.

If Morgan is so well known for this behavior, what NewsHour producer or researcher thought putting her on the air live was a good idea?
My deeper concern is that NewsHour, and it seems Woodruff in particular, is bending over to find people like Morgan to “balance out” their progressive take on the news. Rubbish. They should keep doing a good job; there are legions of other places for the Morgans to spread their manure.
In case they haven’t figured it out, people like Morgan add nothing to the debate except high-pitched screams. Flying monkeys, indeed. Hope she doesn’t burn her fingers trying to take off Judy Woodruff’s ruby slippers.
For the record, I think Soltz had facts and cogent arguments, and a demeanor respectful of the forum notwithstanding Morgan’s boorishness.
TRex @ 241
No, but social services did get involved (click on degenerate gambler).
Then her husband the station manager hired her to work on his hot new wingnut talk show, and that’s all she wrote.

true – it’s a good thing… Greenwald and others say the reich-wingers will vote for the most convincing Daddy who promises discipline with a big belt, and that therefore Benito Guliani may still get their support…
but my whole backstory is that the cracker willingness to sit-this-one-out has helped pull the (R) party to where it languishes today, in contrast to the (D) orthodoxy of vote-for-whom-you-despise-because-the-other-one-is-even-worse, which has brought the (D) party to the right of Nixon/Ford republicans, according to people like Noam Chomsky.

AZ Matt @ 230
Kmiec trivializes Bush’s rejection of the legal judgement of Attorney General Aschcroft and his acting replacement Comey. He portray’s their subsequent resignations as petulance.
In fact, when a president proceeds with actions that his attorney general has judged to be illegal, that attorney general has an ethical and professional obligation to resign rather than be associated with and give tacit approval to that criminal activity.
And, when Congress becomes aware of such presidential behavior, it is time to investigate and call for the appointment of an independent counsel.
Late Late Nite is upstairs
Oh, lovely snark from the Pepperdine U. prof, working for an institution known for its unbiased, objective analyses. Aren’t they the ones giving Rummy his Coke and a Churchill Award for his statesmanlikerelated activities?
His snark ellided many issues. One I’d like to hear more about is that Gonzales’ behavior – had he been trying to get a will signed in Texas by a Hunt, a Bush, or a Pickens – was blatantly unethical, and would likely subject him to sanctions by his bar association.
Gonzales, acting in his capacity as a lawyer, tried to get a signature from a drugged and disoriented Ashcroft while he was in intensive care and had been for nearly a week. Gonzales knew that Ashcroft did not then have the authority to act as AG, having delegated his authority to Comey for the duration of his sudden acute illness. Under those circumstances, any signature by Ashcroft would not have been a valid signature by the “Attorney General”. Gonzales knew that Ashcroft had declined to give his authoritzation before his surgery, and that Comey had specifically refused to authorize “the program” after Ashcroft became ill.
Gonzales committed textbook unethical behavior. Have we any members fo the Texas bar who can file a complaint?
Lou Costello @ 301

current Harper’s Magazine (June issue) cover story:
“Undoing Bush: How to Repair Eight Years of Sabotage, Bungling, and Neglect”
(subscription firewall, sorry). brief excerpts:
Well, I’m way behind in reading the comments, but before I get EPU’d, wanted to give this a shout:
Al Gore has a new book out, “The Assault on Reason“. The link is to TruthOut, one of my favorite news sources that provides the best news stories from the conventional media, because in addition to Al Gore writing about his new book, if you scroll down you’ll also find
“The Last Temptation of Al Gore,” By Eric Pooley, a long piece looking at the whole “will Al run?” question.
This is a great introduction to his book because he explores some of the themes we’ve been exploring here, deploring the lack of meaningful national discourse about critical issues, and looking at where to find it.
I loves me some Al Gore, and would love some more!

TexBetsy @ 320
I’m actually building a new site supporting a run by Al Gore and I have a large ground team contingent but almost no help lined up on the site. Since they mentioned my fondest hope for the future of our country, I thought I’d ask them. Are you a fan? Otherwise, I wouldn’t want to ask for help on something you didn’t really feel strongly for.
Nate @ 323
Yes, I am a supporter, and I am more than happy to help AFTER next Friday. Need to finish out the school year.
TexBetsy @ 325
I never got your email. When I do, I’ll send you the link to the site I’m building. It’s a high-profile URL and I don’t want to make it public until kinks are worked out.
Wigwam, good points about the context that Kmiec ignores. His distinctions are snarky, and what he ignores borders on the unethical. As a professor of constitutional law, he is disingenuous, at best.
The President’s behavior in knowingly and intentionally attempting to get an invalid signature, supposedly authorizing program(s) he considered essential, and his decision to re-authorize his program(s) without formally dispensing with the need to obtain DOJ authorization – in the face of an express adverse determination by OLC/DOJ – sound sufficiently illegal that Comey could not continue to be associated with his behavior. He had to give up his representation or be deemed to be furthering that continuing illegal behavior.
And that argument can be made without knowing details about the underlying intelligence gathering, which might well make Comey’s decision even more necessary.
My worry is that the DOJ’s agreement to re-authorize the “program(s)” presumably depended on the President’s promises to modify them. Given his prior acts, it seems unreasonable to trust without verifying, and less reasonable to assume that the DOJ under Gonzales has made any attempt to verify that those promises have been kept.
I think you all are, perhaps, being just a tad too hard on the good Ms. Woodruff.
After all, rumour has it that there was a slight breeze blowing through the studio that evening.
As a result the even slighter mussing of her hair reportedly caused her to completely lose her train of thought.
OK?

DrDick @ 159
I have a sneaky feeling Jesus would have concurred.
Wingnut supporter of Deserter-in-Chief Bush mentions her group represents those “who still support the war and support the President”.
Already she has lost the argument with the word “still”. It implies that there are not so many.
Morgan wants an open-ended commitment in Iraq. How many family members does she have serving in Iraq? Why do these people support the chickenhawk wimp Bush? OK, a silly question.
“MELANIE MORGAN: We are a pro-troop organization, as well.”
NOPE. These non-combatants support THE POLICY –
not the troops.

unrelated to content — I like that at least part of the transcript is shown. I’d love to see more of this. I’m deaf so can’t appreciate the You Tube presentations unless there’s a transcript.
Thanks for the post, especially the link to the PBS Ombudsman. I didn’t know who Morgan was, but I was stunned and later disgusted that such a person was on the show. It wasn’t even the rudeness so much as the utter lack of substance.
Much later I thought, this is all that’s left of the Pro War movement. This is actually a good thing.
