I feel for his family as I would any family. I think however he became part of the problem on issues between church and state in this county. I won’t miss him.
Gays, prolifers and feminists caused September 11
After the September 11, 2001, attacks Falwell said on the 700 Club, “I really believe that the pagans, and the abortionists, and the feminists, and the gays and the lesbians who are actively trying to make that an alternative lifestyle, the ACLU, People For the American Way, all of them who have tried to secularize America. I point the finger in their face and say ‘you helped this happen.’” (a sentiment with which Robertson concurred).
May he be judged by the standard that he judged others is about all I can say.

I really am sorry to see him die before he was able to observe the final destruction of the once great republican party he was so successful in bastardizing. Now, if we can keep Robertson and Rove and the others of that ilk around, it would be great — give ‘em front row tickets to the 2009 Inauguration and make ‘em wear a scarlet letter on their foreheads…maybe a big red F.
Well there goes his grand plan for an America based on the Bible. I imagine that God or Jesus just called him to a better place before he could do any more damage here on Earth.
What better way to distract all those pliant Evangelicals from the many political revelations coming out these days…
Just to foment some spiritual contemplation among those among us given to such mental meanderings, here’s a thought…not all pernicious conspiracies exist only on the mortal plane…
Let’s all stop pussy footing around, this guy was piece of shit. He was a hate mongering bigot. He extolled the virtues of…? There are heroes who die for a just cause and then there are the Jerry Fakewells who act like they should recieve the same accolades, not on my watch. Good riddance shithead.
There were many things I disagreed on with Falwell and many things he said that I detested, but still I hope he rests in peace.
And that is all I have to say on this subject…
Now I wish I could go back to hanging out with Comey for a few hours with Marcy asking questions, listening to Jane’s snarky color-commentary…sipping a glass of Chadonnay — now that would be the perfect afternoon! ;)
I hope this leads to a significant shift in the cultural discourse in this country, Falwell was a poisonous voice with far too much influence over the past twenty years. Does anyone know if there’s any succession in place, or will Falwell’s enterprises crumble the way most televangelist empires do when the leader goes away?

Thanks for that. RevDeb. Let’s all have a Campari & soda!
He’s being put up for sainthood by the Christopaths on cable. They are ready for this.
Sorry. On my screen, LC’s reference to 911 was #23. Would never imagine anyone would kid about more deaths in Iraq. MSM not reporting it is no surprise either.
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/18679412/
…Ron Godwin, Liberty’s executive vice president, said Falwell, 73, had been found unresponsive around 10:45 a.m. and was taken to Lynchburg General Hospital.
Godwin said he was not sure what caused the collapse, but noted that Falwell had “a history of heart challenges.”
“I had breakfast with him, and he was fine at breakfast,” Godwin said. “He went to his office, I went to mine and they found him unresponsive.” …

Don’t forget his words about MLK Jr. I hope the MSM can refrain from lionizing Falwell. He doesn’t deserve it.

I did not refer to 911 in any comment. My comment was that 5 US troops were also killed today.
The man was full of hateful things, but thought they came from God. It is hard to feel for that smug man, but his life, so misdirected, is a pitiful thing.
My condolences to his family. As for the rest of us–the truth is he hadn’t been a big factor in national politics for a long time now, so his passing will make little difference. But it is a reminder that the Reagan era is receding ever more quickly.
Was Falwell the minister who was friendly with Pres Carter, or was there another?
Not sure who you mean; Falwell as all about Ray-guns. Maybe Billy Graham was on speaking terms with Carter and Carter’s home preacher. After all the man did teach adult Sunday School, even though teh Falwells and Robertsons kept trying to deny him as a Christian.)
Thank the lord…for taking this misguided soul from our midst. I hope he gets a big soft chair to sit in while he polishes the pearly gates for all eternity.
May he finally learn true love and acceptance.. and that you don’t always have to wear clothes or even underwear under those robes..)
He seemed troubled and discontent in this life. Lettuce pray that he attains the seventy-two virgins he yearned for, whatever gender those virgins may be.
Ms. ET laughed when I told her. “The devil’s gonna have his hands full!”
I like to think that these guys have BIG surprises in store for them on the other side. It’s like that silly joke about Islamic Martyrdom – 70 Virginians meet them in heaven, not 70 Virgins like they had been taught.
I’m sorry for Falwell’s family and loved ones. Because Falwell was a member of our species -and a sentient being – I hope he did not suffer.
I wish the good Reverend had been capable of showing such Christian charity during his life time.
I am not delighted by his death.
I am delighted that – as a consequence of his death – his hate speech has now been silenced, forever. I am also delighted that his active efforts to overthrow our Constitution and Republic in favor of a Christofascist state are ended.
I am delighted by the prospect that the Dominionist training camps known as Liberty U will fail without his malign presence.
Bad news for the Falwells,; good news for the Republic.
Thank fuck for this. The world just got a little saner what with this nutbag now taken up to snuggle with his beloved Jebus.
Neither Falwell, nor American evangelical Protestantism, generally, have much to do with Jesus, and the only part of the New Testament they seem to enjoy is Revelations. Were there an afterlife, Falwell wouldn’t be spending it with Christ.
That said, Jerry is as close as you are going to get to pure evil in a human being. No child trauma caused him to take money from the elderly. No mental disorder has caused him to spew hatred from his mouth every chance he got. No one was forcing him to claim that he spoke for God.
No, he’s a special kind of evil. A man who would claim holiness and enlightenment simply to further his wealth and power. Even Dante didn’t have a place for this level of scum. No, Satan is opening up a whole new wing today.
I feel for his family and as a human being I fear for what he is about to face. If there is anything after this life, he will meet the doom reserved for only the most wicked.
The hard part for those left behind will be watching as the MSM and the right try to make him out to be a saint.
I hope we’re not going to get an executive order or whatever calling for “Rapture Day” and a flag at half-mast.
When I saw Chimpy visited Jamestown and declared “it” the founding part of this country, I had another Orwellian creepy feeling.
He got lucky. He didn’t die with arms and legs blown off. He didn’t die with his head burned to a crisp and lay in a burn ward for months. He has died an easy death.
I do send condolences to his family, because no matter who you are, your family suffers the loss.
“The true Negro does not want integration. He realizes his potential is far better among his own race. Who then is propagating this terrible thing? First of all, we see the hand of Moscow in the background . . .” – Falwell, 1958
Fuck him. Fuck Falwell, fuck his corpse, and fuck his immortal soul. Falwell was a pernicious, vicious, and just plain evil influence in the world. I’d sooner wish the Manson rested in peace.
If there IS such a thing as an afterlife, I hope Falwell’s is one of torment. “Peace”? I wish NO peace to Falwell. He was a rotten bastard when he was alive, and I don’t have one ounce of good will toward the sack of guts.
I’m glad he’s dead and only wish it had come for him 20 years earlier.
i’m going to go out on a limb here and parphrase thomas jefferson – i tremble when i reflect that god is just… and wish only enlightenment, truth and mercy on the dead.
on the other hand… i hope (but don’t expect) that he will be remembered among the living accurately for the hatefilled life he led and the harm he has done.
My personal view of the afterlife is that it’s one of insight, with clear understanding of how we did here on earth. So for those who lived a basically decent life, not so bad. But for those who lived a life of hate and inflicted cruelty on others? Now that’s hell.
Lord have mercy on Brother Falwell. I think he’ll need it. And so will we, thanks to his hate-filled life’s work.
Well, I’m sure Mr. Falwell always thought he was operating in God’s great plan; and, who knows, maybe he was. He has left a legacy of sorts which will mark his place in time. There are those who will say he was great and those who will say he was a blight; but it cannot be argued that he held strong opinions and influenced people. I find most religious opinion oppressive and I cannot see the worth in what he offered, but I am a blind sinner in that regard. That he lived and loved, cannot be denied, and for that he should be honored.

We’ve got a flag in front of our church. Over my dead body would it be lowered for Falwell. That’s not going to happen.
Reverend Falwell did many great things for our nation, and our people, during his decades of service.
He will be missed.
Jerry Falwell was a greedy bigot who got rich abusing God’s word, God’s name, and the trust of his followers. He served only himself and an extreme right-wing agenda, and my regret is reserved for his wasted life and talents.
I hope God treats him the way he deserves to be treated, although the shock of discovering that God is a black woman will probably give him another heart attack.

not meaning to be a wet blanket, but I just finished reading the comments over at TPM on the comey testimony, specifically the Ashcroft stuff. it specifically indicates Bush orders the visit to ashcroft, breaking any number of rules about secrecy doing so, and then continued the illegal wiretap program for some time KNOWING it was illegal.
in ANY other time in america, there would be a bill of impeachment in the house tonight with 434 co-sponsors. now it’s just part of the background noise.
You know all of a sudden I do have a craving for ACDC/LedZeppelin. It’s a strange and funny thing. I mean I should be in properly pious mourning mood for another fellow huma . . . Oh gosh, I can’t say it.
I can say without pause that Falwell was a despicable ass. His passing should bring a small measure of hope to those who wish to see all forms of vitriolic and bellicose religious fundamentalism abolished via the courts of public scorn.
I can’t tiptoe around the incalculable damage people like Falwell have caused to humanity out of sheer egotism and a lust for power. In my mind, respect for the dead applies no more here than it would if news came out about the death of any Al-Quaeda leader.
Alfred, did you see where Congress now has lower approval ratings than POTUS? I wonder if it is because the new congress is appearing as spineless as the old one, save for SJC.
I hope God treats him the way he deserves to be treated, although the shock of discovering that God is a black woman will probably give him another heart attack.
no no LESBIAN Black Woman. Ever see the Ellen Degeneres special about meeting god. in the living room, picture after picture of jesus, jesus at disneyland, jesus on a pony….

Considering Falwell probably considered every denomination but his own unChristian, I think that’s an appropriate course of action.
Thinking back to 1981-82, when I decided to leave the Republican Party:
Even more than Ronald Reagan’s insane deficit spending, Falwell’s not-very-well-disguised race baiting, as he sought to get Southern Whites into the GOP fold through his Moral Majority hate organization, saved me from continuing to be a young Republican.
So I guess I can say that Rev. Falwell saved me. Praise the Lord!

Loved what?
Money, money, money, Baby! Loved him some money. Loved him some food! Loved to be the center of attention. Loved to tell people what to do. Sure, it was all negative from my perspective but isn’t that the greatest lesson he has taught the world?
Its times like these, that truely rotten people like some of these who have comment on a human being’s death come out. It is a tragedy for so many people to be hateful to one man when they would never wish it upon themselves. As for the comment he said about gays, lesbians and femenists….I guess you forgot that he also retracted what he said and appologized for how it came out; sorry to disappoint you all, but he was human too…you never made a mistake before? Bottom line, all of you who had negative things to say about Fallwell at the news of his death should really reevaluate what it means to be a decent person.

tell me about it. bloomberg is considering a third party run. we may end up having to back him just to get something to change…
5 more troops dead today too. May they rest in peace.
bless those fallen souls for giving this maniac a right to spew his racial, gender, and religious intolerance for so many years (and allowing people to listen to him).. i do hope the family is at peace, but justification of “fighting for freedom” just got a little easier for me today, knowing there is one less bigot out there
sorry for the intolerance on my part, however it needed to be said
Jerry Falwell attended high school at Brookville High School in Lynchburg, Virginia, where he was a student athlete (a “multi-letterman” as described in the terms of the time), playing on both the football and the basketball teams as a starter.[citation needed] Jerry Falwell converted to Christianity as a young man in college and quickly felt a great desire to convert his home city, Lynchburg, to Christianity, even though his father was a bootlegger and that was a good way to receive his finances. After attending Baptist Bible College in Springfield, Missouri, he returned to Lynchburg to begin a new church, and claimed the title of God’s right hand
In my opinion, Jerry Falwell sold his soul to the Republican Party and the Moonies a long time ago. Sun Myung Moon bailed Liberty University our of bankruptcy…at what price? See The Moon-Bush Cash Conduit.
As a gay man, I can honestly say that he will not be missed by my community. The world is a better place now that Falwell’s dead. His God apparently had enough of his bombast for injustice.
No, he’s a special kind of evil. A man who would claim holiness and enlightenment simply to further his wealth and power. Even Dante didn’t have a place for this level of scum.

I disagree. Someone who has caused as much damage as he has deserves all that he gets. While I will not put my true thoughts in writing (that ol’ NYT headline thingy my mother taught me) I will think them. Those that write them I thank for expressing truth. All the other is just pablum, like the kind passed out everyday in most churches.

Oh right, right. *lower the dial on ACDC/LedZepplin, and reassume properly pious mourning mask*
Well, what I really meant is since when is being unresponsive a cause for alarm? We’ve witnessed a truckload of “unresponsive” and no one’s run for a doctor before…
In the 1980s Jerry Falwell was an outspoken supporter of the Apartheid regime in South Africa. When president PW Botha was elected President by the White South African minority, Reverend Falwell went to South Africa and made statements supporting the government there and urging American Christians to buy Krugerrands, a coin issued by the South African Government. He drew the ire of many when he called Nobel Peace Prize winner and Anglican Archbishop Desmond Tutu a phony.
I am sad when anyone dies.
It is my work to save lives.
No matter how much we hate a person’s work or politics, I still think it is right to honor life.
It is right to honor life, Eg. But there are some things i wonder about. When one such as he was, would prefer interracial children like me to never have been born. I feel for his loved ones which are left behind, but i can’t grieve for him. Not in that way.
Alfred, did you see where Congress now has lower approval ratings than POTUS? I wonder if it is because the new congress is appearing as spineless as the old one, save for SJC.
I wonder if that is for Congress as a whole or if there are differing approval levels for Dems and Repubs.

I think that’s right. Although I share almost all of the sentiments expressed above, FWIW I think it’s better to remain silent for a time. The man hasn’t even been buried yet. How would we react if our political opponents treated one of our own this way?
Thanks for Stairway to Heaven. I remember back in the day when the wingnuts said this was a devil song. Perfect! ‘and he’s buying the stairway to heaven’

Bigots like Falwell say the things they do because they think everyone will agree with them. When they are disproved, they retract not out of remorse, but because they think that leaving their bigoted comments out there will diminish them in the eyes of the wider world. As for their followers, with them it’s a wink and a nod. The followers know the apology is just a tactic.
I assume his heart finally burst and the bile poured out. The lowest form of human in this world is the one who uses God to preach hate and to enrich himself at the same time. This Jerry won’t be missed.

Falwell hurt a lot of people for his own gain. Would you rather everybody put on a fake happy face and lie about that?
I regret that Falwell wasted his life and his potential on greed, bigotry, and deceiving the gullible. If you want nicer, you’ll have to find a different guy to remember.
Alfred, did you see where Congress now has lower approval ratings than POTUS? I wonder if it is because the new congress is appearing as spineless as the old one, save for SJC.
I wonder if that is for Congress as a whole or if there are differing approval levels for Dems and Repubs.
Yeah, perhaps this dip in approval ratings is due to the Gang of 11 that still voted with the president?
Dunno but I’m gonna spin it the way I want it for once!!
Not hating Falwell is more about me than him. I’m gay and felt the sting every time he took the opportunity to disparage all the people he felt responsible for the world’s ills.
Hating him never made me feel better. We all have to live and die with our actions and words. Today I choose not to hate.
He blesses the boys as they stand in line
The smell of gun grease and the bayonets they shine
He’s there to help them all that he can
To make them feel wanted he’s a good holy man
Sky pilot…..sky pilot
How high can you fly
You’ll never, never, never reach the sky
He smiles at the young soldiers
Tells them its all right
He knows of their fear in the forthcoming fight
Soon there’ll be blood and many will die
Mothers and fathers back home they will cry
Sky pilot…..sky pilot
How high can you fly
You’ll never, never, never reach the sky
He mumbles a prayer and it ends with a smile
The order is given
They move down the line
But he’s still behind and he’ll meditate
But it won’t stop the bleeding or ease the hate
As the young men move out into the battle zone
He feels good, with God you’re never alone
He feels tired and he lays on his bed
Hopes the men will find courage in the words that he said
Sky pilot…..sky Pilot
How high can you fly
You’ll never, never, never reach the sky
You’re soldiers of God you must understand
The fate of your country is in your young hands
May God give you strength
Do your job real well
If it all was worth it
Only time it will tell
In the morning they return
With tears in their eyes
The stench of death drifts up to the skies
A soldier so ill looks at the sky pilot
Remembers the words
“Thou shalt not kill”
Sky pilot…..sky pilot
How high can you fly
You never, never, never reach the sky
Just wanted my FirePup peeps to know that I am now meditating on the adage, “If you can’t say something nice, say nothing at all.”
Um, is that the dryer I hear? I think I better go fold some laundry and put in another load…
Chicken!
Egregious has the right of it, honor life. Even if that life proves to be antithesis to everything you hold near and dear; at least your own values are better defined. Now, that said, having to learn such a lesson by witnessing the acts of Falwell puts me in mind of this quote:
“I am proud to be paying taxes in the United States. The only thing is – I could be just as proud for half the money.” — Arthur Godfrey, entertainer
So, too, do I think I could have learned just as much from half the narrow minded bigotry. Still…honor life!
I don’t feel strongly one way or the other about saying, uh, negative things about Falwell at this precise time.
I am, however, very appreciative of both points of view as they have been expressed here by you wise and witty folks. FDL ROCKS….(and thus, I shall soon be unemployed).
I wonder how many Evangelicals are expecting Falwell to rise again in a couple days?
Not many — they’re too busy wondering why they weren’t raptured up with him. And looking for the other 143,999 who were.
Rapture?
I always thought that meant “turning into a mellow hippy”.. which means Falwell and a lot of self-righteous pretenders “fell behind” long ago…
Not where he eats, but where he is eaten: a certain convocation of politic worms are e’en at him. Your worm is your only emperor for diet: we fat all creatures else to fat us, and we fat ourselves for maggots: your fat king and your lean beggar is but variable service, two dishes, but to one table: that’s the end.
Oh dear. I can’t see how anyone can think of Falwell as a decent person and want young people to look up to him.
I guess you didn’t listen to him very much. Here’s some more. He said:
“[I hope before I die] we won’t have any public schools…”
He supported apartheid in South Africa and was a blatant racist all his life. Advocated intolerance. Paid for the “documentary” about Clinton involved in ‘coke’ trafficking (an investigation which, by the way, implicated the Bush family more than Clinton, but they never mention that).
He advocated the apocalyps and issued talking points for all churches.
Well, I could go on and on but I guess you had to be there to know some of this.
Now, who among the Republican contenders are going to show up at his funeral?
This is a very interesting question. I gotta think there will be a slew of Republican candidates at the service. The more interesting question is, which of the dems are gonna show?
I wonder how he felt about going out with no one near him? As a man who lived for public adoration, it must have been astonishing to him to find out that he could end without fanfare (let alone an encore).
You don’t know much about Xtianity. When authentic Xtians repent for a sin, they make restitution. I never heard of Jerry making restitution to anyone. If you know otherwise, please provide a link.
If there were divine justice, he would have been left in a semi-vegetative state, able to hear and understand, but not communicate in any way, for as long as poor Terri Shiavo.

Actually, that’s irony. Justice is blind, though, if it’s any consolation.
As RevDeb@15 said. Let’s hope the unlamented (ir)Rev. Falwell likes warm weather. If ever anyone embodied the antithesis of the teachings of Yeshua al Nazarat, it was Falwell.
“He blesses the boys as they stand in line
The smell of gun grease and the bayonets they shine…In the morning they return
With tears in their eyes
The stench of death drifts up to the skies
A soldier so ill looks at the sky pilot
Remembers the words
“Thou shalt not kill”
Sky pilot…..sky pilot
How high can you fly
You never, never, never reach the sky”
Thank you very much for that memory. So appropriate.
“You don’t prevent anything by war except peace.” – Harry S. Truman
Said this several times during live blogging of Comey’s testimony- Thank you, James Comey. Truth is the engine etc….
As for Falwell, I only hope neither the media nor world leaders lionize him in any way because he has passed from this earth. A recitation of the facts of his life (repeated over & over on telly) should be enough.

Unfortunately, my entire perspective on organized religion is rooted in my contact with Chaplains in Korea and Vietnam. The bad taste will never go away.

To summarize…
Tenet has agreed to cooperate with the House Oversight Cmte’s investigation into the Niger claim & its inclusion in the SOTU address. He’ll give a deposition on what he knew, and what the administration knew when. Interesting Waxman point, imo, is that they’re using this deposition technique, not always requiring everyone to show up in open hearing. Specifically, he referenced that they’ll have people asking the questions — my take is that they’ll use skilled interviewers / examiners. Waxman’s big point here is that they’re trying to get the information.
Waxman also said they’re waiting to hear from Condi. He emphasized that she has refused to cooperate and that’s why they’re issuing a subpoena. It’s not optional. The cmte is trying to get the info and it’s her duty to help them do their job.
Ed asked if they were going to find out that there was a deliberate effort to mislead wrt intelligence & the justification for going to war. Waxman was nice & political, saying that’s what they’re trying to understand. And maybe it was just my wishful thinking, but I thought I heard his delightful snark when he answered.
What is really pathetic is that in Ashcroft’s hospital room, Andy Card was leading the charge. How f*cked up is that? Gonzales was just window dressing. Card is an engineer. He never even attended law school, but he was the one trying to pressure Comey to sign the Presidential Order.
MSNBC’s Contessa Brewer is very matter of fact about it, just another news item. CNN, not so much, Kyra Phillips has put on the fake somber voice routine complete with gloomy music
Ahhh, great moments in real-time cable news. MSNBC cites White House praise of Falwell. Only it’s from whitehouse.org, well-known anti-Bush White House spoof site. D’oh …
Every time he opened his mouth and hate came out he apologized but that never stopped him from saying more hateful things and encouraging others to spew their vitriol. I am a decent, caring person but I will feel no guilt in the joy I felt when I heard this sack of s**t was dead. I hope he rots in HELL.
He birthed an organization that targetted me and other gays to advance a vile hate-filled agenda. Not to mention that little thing about claiming that America desrved 9/11.
God will take care of it now. I have better things to worry about today.
No, he’s a special kind of evil. A man who would claim holiness and enlightenment simply to further his wealth and power. Even Dante didn’t have a place for this level of scum.
Third Circle. Cerberus guards the gluttons, forced to lie in the mud under continual cold rain and hail whilst being forced to consume their own excrement. (Canto VI)
don’t forget this work is called “The Divine Comedy”. It had all the notoriously pious folk in hell, all the notorious sinners in heaven. In short, it was simply a clever work of political satire disguised as religious commentary. Many of the torments it describes were cribbed from Zoroastrian, Hindu, and Chinese/Tibetan afterlife mythologies (especially the Tibetans who have the worst afterlife punishments ever conceived!) only after Dante and the others were safely dead did some religious figures start to suggest it was “an accurate vision of hell…”

HTH.
thank you thank you for that. what a comprehensive report, too. Wow, Waxman’s moving. I’m comfortable with him chosing how to get the information.
And Condi, well at least he gets her out of the country and out diplomacy-ing. but maybe that’s a bad thing
J.Falwell chose to mix his religion and his politics and by doing so inflicted upon many a form of “christianity” that often seemed more about vindictiveness and intolerance and much less about compassion and mercy. Being gay I early on concluded J.Falwell was a hate-talker and hate merchant and he plainly relished earthly matters in ways that undermined and sidelined his supposed great reverence for all things christian. It has become the bane of American politics to allow/permit toxic, virulent doses of religious false piety and fraudulent morality to be mixed in/with public policy and governance. I don’t recall J.Falwell ever much going after obscene wealth disparities in society or being ever very forceful about the consequences of allowing hatred, intolerance or bigotry to overtake the better instincts of compassion, mercy and forgiveness. Of course this seems to be the case with Dobson and Robertson as well. J.Falwell and his “moral majority” points of view early on seemed to me to be much more about exclusion, narrowmindedness and a under-formed,under-informed view of life and this worlds many social, ethical and moral short falls. Falwell wanted/liked a big pulpit but his message was sadly small on christian aspects of mercy, compassion and forgiveness.
But then isn’t that the crux of much American shortfall and resultant woe at home and throughout the world these days?
One Pharisee gone. One fewer advocate of apartheid. One fewer advocate of hating gay people. One fewer proponent of all-out war in the Middle East. One fewer anti-Semite in Jew-loving clothing. One fewer self-righteous creep to worship money and power.
Of all the current Clusterfuck scandals- I like the Gonzo one the best. It just keeps goin an goin- and whatever the clusterfuckers try ta do ta put it ta rest just makes if flame up more. Could easily go on until the end.

This disgusting individual spewed hatred and sent his disciples out to undermine the very structure of government of this great country.
Falwell flunked out of Junior College and then went away to a fully non-accredited bible school for a week or two and came back a pastor!!! HALLYLUYA!!
He called himself doctor- but of course he had no degree whatsoever- which didn’t keep him from tellin people how ta live their lives..
He was spreadin SHIT his whole life- His daddy was a moonshiner- Jerry was a Godshiner- born in ignorance- died in ignorance.
Ashes ta ashes- dust ta dust. Wow- that’s a lotta dust!
Elliot @ 255, you’re welcome! Hank makes me sleep better, too. I wish Conyers & others would pay close attention to how Waxman & Leahy (incl Whitehouse, Schumer, etc) make it work!
Some will say that God had decided it was his time to go, but I really believe that the pagans, and the abortionists, and the feminists, and the gays and the lesbians who are actively trying to make that an alternative lifestyle, the ACLU, People For the American Way, all of them who have tried to secularize America. I point the finger in their face and say you helped this happen.
May he be judged by the standard that he judged others is about all I can say.
a sentiment most of us wholeheartedly agree, judging from his early demise and his own statement concerning early demise, we would assume he’s a pagan and every single thing he CLAIMS is depraved

Blow them all away, in the name of the Lord. I suspect Mr. Falwell is having to do a bit of explaining re: Commandment #3. Perhaps people like Falwell are given to us to remind us of the dangers of conceit. It’s difficult for us mortals to identify any other meaning for his life.
It’s only wrong to speak ill of the dead if you believe that their spirit might rise and cause you grief. Well, guess what? I don’t have that sort of belief, which is part of the reason I always thought Falwell was an asshole all along. Not, mind you, because of his faith. Rather, because of his faith that the likes of me were satan’s spawn, damned to saute in hell for ever. His kind can’t shed their mortal coils fast enough for me. Because the sooner this world gets past religion, the sooner this will be a more peaceful world.
Just wanted my FirePup peeps to know that I am now meditating on the adage, “If you can’t say something nice, say nothing at all.”
Um, is that the dryer I hear? I think I better go fold some laundry and put in another load…
heh.
tried that also.
2 loads worth.
how’d yours come out?
i keep finding myself experimenting with origami towels.
must be some sorta healing ritual.
one zap. DANG!
pretty good aim for a gurrrl…
i’m still trying to decipher our post leader:

2. directly under that, the “Share & Enjoy” linkies.

Those that speak ill of the dead cannot have have good come upon them.
One were the average life expectancy of Americans is 77 years and where wealthy men with access to high quality healthcare (like Falwell) routinely live into their 90s.

Let’s all reject the Word of God and put our trust in the hateful opinions displayed on this blog and elswhere in the leftist blogosphere today, shall we?
May he be judged by the standard that he judged others is about all I can say.
Amen to that.
Breath…I may catch some flack for this, but, it’s my understanding that we should Bless, not Curse.
His passing may be seen as a blessing to us trying to live a Christian life with one less voice that makes it easy for non-christians to point the finger, but…I also think it’s up to God, or Goddess, or Creator to do the judging. Leaders of faith have an even higher calling to be, at least, more responsible to lifting people UP. That said, I’m not shedding tears for Rev. Falwell, ( I almost typed FALWALL).
Let’s also remember his little org. “The Moral Majority” That in and of itself sums up this prick. Sorry alozarka, but I still live in the USA and reserve the right to despise and hate someone. Although I don’t really hate anyone, but I did despise the hell out of this guy.
I’m sorry he’s dead. I’m not sorry for the judgement he’s brought on himself. He never seemed to understand that God doesn’t judge based on externals (color, sex, any of that) but on internals (hearts and minds).
Elliot @ 255, you’re welcome! Hank makes me sleep better, too. I wish Conyers & others would pay close attention to how Waxman & Leahy (incl Whitehouse, Schumer, etc) make it work!
boy that was a lousy house hearing with Comey.
I’m listening to selise’s rip and Leahy’s outrage is just now
Roarrr
to paraphrase mark twain…
‘another scumbag has gone down and i swim in oceans of satisfaction.’
Heck, then! Clebrate! Invite Al Sharpton over for dinner!
the difference between sharpton and faldwell is that although both are called “reverend”, sharpton has operated in the secular world, and not acted like he was the voice of his god… so whatever questionable acts he did, he did as a man..
faldwell marinated himself with his hateful hypocricy casting judgement and aspersions as an agent of his god. and that puts him in a different category…
but thanks for the invite al ozarka, for being a concern troll.
Surprising that the “don’t speak ill of the dead” dictum is alive and well here.
It does seem like a bit of superstition.
I mean- if you were cursing some SOB five minutes before he passed into eternity- what would keep ya from continuing?
My sentiments exactly. I will not engage in the hypocrisy of lamenting the demise of one of the most evil and destructive men in America. Perhaps I should not celebrate and rejoice, but I do feel a sense of vindication. I do almost nurture a perverse hope that the teachings of Yeshua al Nazarat are true and he finds his just reward (which is certainly not the one he was expecting). The man was the antithesis of everything his prophet taught.
I’m sorry he’s dead. I’m not sorry for the judgement he’s brought on himself. He never seemed to understand that God doesn’t judge based on externals (color, sex, any of that) but on internals (hearts and minds).
‘As ye do to the least of these ….’
LOL!
I think it is YOU who does not understand that the condition of the heart and the spirit is displayed outwardly.

May I quote from the Yeshua al Nazarat, whom you revere so much? “Judge not lest ye be judged.” “Let him who is without sin cast the first stone.” “Those who have enjoyed their rewards in this life, shall not enjoy them in the next.” All of these apply to the unlamented (ir)Rev. Falwell.
i concur about not letting hate eat one up. Action is better.
…but his statements mean that to this day i worry that some christianist is going to whack my baby sister and her partner cause of the encouragement provided by Falwell and his posse.
…and his advocacy of the ‘prosperity bible’ view helped many many folks swallow hook line & sinker the notion that we need not help those in need.

Al-Ozarka at Daddio’s Dark Side:
When Dr. Falwell gets over the joy at finally being able to weep at Jesus’ feet, he’ll have a ring-side seat in the arena of history.
Too bad when Jesus attempts to take Jerry into his arms to forgive him for all the bigoted hatred he has spewed over the years… “Rev.” Falwell will push Him away, shouting: “Get away from me you liberal Homo!” (Capital ‘H’)
As a former fundamentalist, I’m familiar with Mr. Falwell. I don’t rejoice in the death of any human being. I do hope that he stands before his Maker and feels shame for the hateful, destructive and divisive things he said and did while on the earth.
I also hope he has a much better understanding of the New Testament and the teachings of Christ now as well.
Al-Ozarka, if you have a point I wish you would get around to making it.
There is a lot of anger toward Falwell here that his death can not mitigate or assuage.
In life, he attacked others viciously and often hypocritically. His faith seemed like nothing more than a way to enrich himself and a convenient envelope in which to wrap his prejudice.
If the tone of this site upsets you, choose another. No one is keeping you here.

He already rejected the teachings of Yeshua al Nazarat. His ministry was the antithesis of everything his “savior” taught.

“Rev.” Falwell will push Him away, shouting: “Get away from me you liberal Homo!” (Capital ‘H’)
No, it’s ‘you liberal Jewish homo!’
(On the basis of his public speeches, I think he hated everyone who didn’t agree with his views on everything. Sorry, trolls: he was a narrow-minded bigot.)
The ‘Moral Majority’ is NEITHER! The ‘Moral Majority’ is NEEEIIIITHEERRR!!! The ‘Moral Majority is NEEEEIIIIIIIIIITHEEEERRRRR!!!!!!!!!
like “no child left behind” underfunds education, like “the patriot act” is the same thing as “the enabling act authored by hitler, like “the clean air act” dumps crap in our childrens air, like “tax breaks” gives middle class money to the wealthiest people on the planet, like this president’s notion of protecting this country means attacking one that poses no threat while abandoning the battle against terrorists and facilitating their numbers
Falwell was to Christianity what bin Laden is to Islam.
Not
faldwell didn’t walk around with an AK, and bin laden never hit the mainstream like faldwell, but in their narrow minded bigotry and intolerance for anyone not of their beliefs, they were IDENTICAL
I am sad when anyone dies.
It is my work to save lives.
No matter how much we hate a person’s work or politics, I still think it is right to honor life.
I think that’s right. Although I share almost all of the sentiments expressed above, FWIW I think it’s better to remain silent for a time. The man hasn’t even been buried yet. How would we react if our political opponents treated one of our own this way?
I can only say this much. If it were one of ours, the right would be making lots of sick jokes, lots of ‘em. A lot more than I’ve seen on here, I must say.
I think it is YOU who does not understand that the condition of the heart and the spirit is displayed outwardly.

I’m just here basking in liberal hatred. It’s very entertaining.
When attempting to converse with Al-Osarka, remember who you’re talking to…just a guess.
Just like a liberal to give an idiotic opinion on something he/she has absolutely no knowledge of.
Shouldn’t you be out oppressing someone? I’m sure there are little animals somewhere around your house that you haven’t tortured yet. And I think ‘24′ is on A&E right now. Hurry, you’re missing all the good parts.
Unlike you and the late (ir)Reverend, I am not a Christian and thus not bound by the teachings of its prophet. However, also unlike you and Falwell, I actually have read and have a great respect for many of the teachings of the historic Yeshua al Nazarat.
“I can only say this much. If it were one of ours, the right would be making lots of sick jokes, lots of ‘em. A lot more than I’ve seen on here, I must say.”
Of course they would. I’m just saying that the inhumanity of the right should not be a guide to or pretext for our own conduct.
So the troll has no point. Time to stop feeding. Any mods around to clean up the mess or shut it down?
Wow…I thought this was an intelligent, progressive site. Who would imagine (do I sound like Condi) that just ’cause some (insert your own adjectives here) body (on the OTHER side) dies, that suddently so many people here are acting out their anger at Each Other?
Breathe, folks. Breathe.

I have a little theory about the afterlife that, at the moment you leave this earth, you will experience all the pain and suffering you have inflicted upon others that you were oblivious to in your earthly life. Only then can you be redeemed. I don’t know exactly how this squares with public figures, since their actions affect a lot more people than regular Joes and Janes like us, but I think God can handle it.
I imagine the more pain you inflicted and the more people you hurt, the longer you will suffer. Not for eternity, but only until you see through their eyes and experience through their hearts the affect you had on their lives. You actually become each person you hurt and experience their pain. It would have to be excrutiating, the equivalent of a temporary hell, the length of which is determined by the magnitude of your trangressions against man and creature.

a man is judged by his deeds. someone who walks around the field shitting on everyone else his whole life shouldn’t be surprised to find himself buried with that same shitpile.
Bottom line, all of you who had negative things to say about Fallwell at the news of his death should really reevaluate what it means to be a decent person.
Remind me, did all the neocons say nice things about Saddam when he died?
“Segregationist politicians like Lester Maddox and George Wallace [11]. He often spoke out in favor of the racist position in those days, for example, in 1958:
“
If Chief Justice Warren and his associates had known God’s word and had desired to do the Lord’s will, I am quite confident that the 1954 decision would never have been made…. The facilities should be separate. When God has drawn a line of distinction, we should not attempt to cross that line.”

Naturally. My point was that, by comparison, people on here are being pretty nice overall.
if there is a heaven and if there is a hell … well, i hope mr. falwell has enough marshmallows where he’s going
CNN, Billy Graham said Jerry leaves a ‘giant vacuum’ in this world. This from the great advisor to despots, would-be-dictators, and pervaders of violence the earth has ever witnessed. Jerry did resemble a marshmallow in his last days.
Dang, I don’t hate anybody. I think we can all hate what someone has done, what they stand for. Hate the sin, not the sinner, kinda thing.
I feel like all this hatred talk is just a bit overboard. We can expect that some people will make jokes as Falwell was not a popular guy with libs and so forth.
I personally don’t like to laugh at anyone’s death. I used to work for a probate attorney and she joked about old people dying all the time. I guess that was her way of handling the whole thing, but I wasn’t much into it. I always felt I should be respectful about such things.
I don’t even hate George Bush. I hate what he’s done to our country and I hate everything he stands for. I loathe the man, but I don’t hate him. ;-)

hate would be the wrong word but i certainly found Falwell contemptible ……

I don’t have that sort of belief, which is part of the reason I always thought Falwell was an asshole all along. Not, mind you, because of his faith. Rather, because of his faith that the likes of me were satan’s spawn, damned to saute in hell for ever. His kind can’t shed their mortal coils fast enough for me. Because the sooner this world gets past religion, the sooner this will be a more peaceful world.
Let’s all reject the Word of God and put our trust in the hateful opinions displayed on this blog and elswhere in the leftist blogosphere today, shall we?
the troll is now claiming that we are all rejoicing about falwell’s death (at his website). i guess he doesn’t know how to read. he certainly doesn’t care to comprehend what he reads. typical ……..
I have no idea what Falwell was like to the people who actually knew him. Did he help the poor and helpless- did he minister to the sick and dying- did he give strength to the weak and helpless? Beats me.
He WAS however a symbol of a great reactionary movement that is still with us.
The sixties were too much for america. We had black people ridin in the front of the bus- black people getting jobs that only white people had filled before- black kids bein bused to white schools- and vice versa..
Then we people protesting a war and sayin bad things about the president
We had people swearin and showin their private parts in movies
All hell was breakin loose- and Falwell and his buds were among those who first basked in the horror of it all.
I find it deeply ironic that his pappy was a moonshiner. Moonshiners made a living off of fulfilling a need that people couldn’t get legally…Jerry made a living off of the fear and hatred following another period of rapid social change.
As Jerry goes to his reward- perhaps a small part of the reactionary fear and hatred of an era goes with him.
Thanks for Stairway to Heaven. I remember back in the day when the wingnuts said this was a devil song. Perfect! ‘and he’s buying the stairway to heaven’
While I appreciate the song titles as metaphors for Mr. Falwells possible destinations, as an avid AC/DC fan i have to object to the use of Reverend Bon Scott’s homage to hedonism and the hard partying rock and roll lifestyle that is “Highway To Hell” as a possible anthem for Mr. Falwell. When Bon sings “goin’ down! party time! my friends are gonna be there too”, I don’t think the friends he had in mind were of a closed minded bigot like Falwell. RIParty-mode Bon!
Maybe “War Pigs” by Black Sabbath would be more apropos.
Let’s all stop pussy footing around, this guy was piece of shit. He was a hate mongering bigot. He extolled the virtues of…? There are heroes who die for a just cause and then there are the Jerry Fakewells who act like they should recieve the same accolades, not on my watch. Good riddance shithead.
kirk murphy @365: Indeed, Falwell’s teachings, and all those of his ilk who have been trying to run the political process for years, have absolutely nothing, nothing to do with Christianity.
Suggested reading for Al_Ozarka: The Politics of Christianity, by Obery Hendricks.

Gonna be interesting to see if Bush issues some sorta statement.
Of course, more protracted, pointless discussions on religion to come on the networks and cable news. Brace yourselves.
I’m really sick of it. I just want to yell into the teevee set: “FUNDIES AIN’T GONNA VOTE FOR NO MORMON, YA DOPES! HE’S TOAST! END OF STORY! HANG IT UP AND MOVE ON ALREADY!”
Reverend Falwell did many great things for our nation, and our people, during his decades of service.
He will be missed.
Well, you must not give a shit about the dead guy since you just used it as an excuse to link to your bullshit site.
A friend of mine pointed out that now jerry will really find out what a sinner he was in this lifetime……me, i just think he’s got a looooog way to go before he’s becomes a truly enlightened soul.
You know, I’ve been noticing so far (I’ve reached post #200) that most of the people pitching hissies because others aren’t crying about Falwell’s return to Satan’s embrace are people who have never posted in the Lake before. In this, I especailly include Al-Ozarka, who has posted on right-wingnut blogs supporting the righty tighties.

I think when something like this happens, they troll the progressive blogs exactly for the purpose of reporting on what nasty things we are saying and how evil we are so Michelle Malkin can write about it on her site.
hey! jerry falwell: heads up bud.
the day you eventually show up in heaven, all those folks you disrespected for their personal lifestyle choices, because you were holier than they, all those who you demeaned and ridiculed…. well, I hope you’re ready for them, because they’ll be there in full force, just waiting for the chance to give you your due.
And this particular troll is a variant which actually jumps in and tries to goad people into saying such things. And when (not if) they get banned, then they have another thing to whine (brag?) about.

Excellent observations; I noted the names were unfamiliar, as you pointed out. But not unexpected, it’s happened here and elsewhere before under similar circumstances. You’ll note the brevity of content with this post, which is both shrewd and laudable considering the attention this thread has received from trolls, thus avoiding nasty sidetracks.

You’re welcome, I have NO pity on this man. We have had to endure this down turning of our great republic as a result of this mans’ bullshit, hang tough- Tap
My condolences to his family. As for the rest of us–the truth is he hadn’t been a big factor in national politics for a long time now, so his passing will make little difference. But it is a reminder that the Reagan era is receding ever more quickly.
Have you looked at a roster of the dickheads who led us into Iraq??
The Reagan era is fading????
The people who helped make Reaganism a virtual religion and who started tearing down the structures of our republic during Reagan’s reign currently occupy five seats on the Supreme Court, untold number of federal judgeships, numerous positions within the Department of Justice, not to mention a sprinkling throughout the Executive Branch: Elliot Abrams specifically stands out along with Michael Ledeen.
We are going to be hobbled with these fucking neanderthals for many many moons and our kids and grandkids are going to suffer through more nonsense as they go through life wondering what the fuck happened to this country?
Haven’t read every comment, but, it’s time for some blunt truth.
GOOD RIDDANCE!
This man did grievous damage to the American experiment. If we’re very, very lucky we might be able to undue some of the damage. But, the damage is so deep that the outlook isn’t bright.
There should be a special place in hell for that bastard.
Haven’t read every comment, but, it’s time for some blunt truth.

A-men!!
I wouldn’t even waste a good shit taking a dump on his body. He has caused so much pain and suffering throughout his life, I cannot even fathom how people can hold back their disgust for such a vile person.
I’ll save my sympathies for those soldiers who died on the attacks on 9/11, the 3,300 soldiers who have died in this tragedy of a war, the half-million Iraqis who have died, all the AIDS victims who he mocked, and many more I can’t even think about right now.
I can only hope that right about now, Jesus is sitting down with dear Jerry, having a heart-to-heart about the fact that He Himself is gay: “C’mon Jerry, I ran around with 12 other men, and all my friends were named Mary!”
Reverend Jerry Falwell was found struck down by God in his office today. Jesus Christ in a rare interview stated “I turned the other cheek for the last time on a man who purported to serve me while violating everything I every taught. My second commandment was “To love thy neighbor as thyself” which Falwell twisted into a message of hate and intolerance. You should have seen his (Falwell’s) face when he saw where he was spending Eternity.”
Jesus spent time with prostitutes, tax collectors, and other outcasts.
He reserved His most serious condemnation for people in religious power who would “not allow others to go into [the Kingdom of Heaven] who want to” … and who “pay your tithe but neglect the weightier matters of the Law – justice, mercy, and good faith” [Matthew 23: 13, 23]
The chorus from the song in “Lilies of the Field” keeps running through my mind…
A-A-A-men, A-A-A-men, A-A-men A-men A-men
Maybe we’re a step closer to healing this country. Yes, a human died (one among many today), and that’s sad, but a powerful voice of bigotry and intolerance is also silenced, and that’s good.
I feel bad finding happiness in anyone’s death, but Falwell was the sort of slug that made the world a much worse place by his being in it. The only good thing Falwell ever did for anyone is what he did in his office this morning.
Try as I may (actually I’m NOT) I can’t muster an iota of regret or sympathy for him or his flock. They’d piss and dance on our graves in a NY minute, hell they do it while we’re alive.
What I regret is feeling that this “man of Gawd” was so hate-filled, hateful, smug, partisan and it evokes my feeling of good riddance kracker.
There are hordes of specimens just like him waiting to step up and step on whoever they can. Falwell has at least 50 years of false witness to answer for – good luck with that Rev!
ZeD☼
I just saw that too.
RIP Reverend Falwell.
Holy Shnikey!
gone, americablog has a fond farewell
Praise the Lord!
Jesus wept.
Hi Jane!
Jane!
RIP indeed. Now, back to the ramifications of the Comey testimony.
I feel for his family as I would any family. I think however he became part of the problem on issues between church and state in this county. I won’t miss him.
Jerry Farewell.
An event that makes an atheist like me actually hope there IS divine judgment…
Nothing is certain in this world but death and taxes…but as far as Falwell has proven…taxes not so much!
Hard to know what to say about a man who said:
May he be judged by the standard that he judged others is about all I can say.
He’s reached his judgement day. My sympathies to his family.
CNN has it too. RIP
I don’t know how you do it yet lolo, I still have ‘No Comments Posted’ on my screen like the Zed was there.
lolo @ 6
That was that, erm, Baker fellow.
Reverend Falwell did many great things for our nation, and our people, during his decades of service.
He will be missed.
Now, who among the Republican contenders are going to show up at his funeral?
Bill Clinton musta been near…
RevDeb @ 15
Wait till he finds out 9ll was an inside job executed by his neocon heroes!
5 more troops dead today too. May they rest in peace.
RevDeb @ 15
amen
My local news channel just reported it a few minutes ago. I think it’s NBC, i so rarely watch anymore.
It is part of the plan to take the focus off the DOJ.
LC @ 23: You’re kidding, right?
LS @ 24
And the civilians in Iraq.
RevDeb @ 15
Amen to that.
Too bad he can’t come back to apologize.
GabrielOak @ 28
No, I’m not kidding, but MSM isn’t reporting it.
Now it will come out that Liberty University is a financial house of cards.
Just wait for it.
“Share and Enjoy”
revdeb@14
well said………..!
Hopefully Mr. Falwell is right about one thing. We will all be judged on the merits of our actions in life.
Well there goes his grand plan for an America based on the Bible. I imagine that God or Jesus just called him to a better place before he could do any more damage here on Earth.
EPU’d from the last thread…
raven @ 395
“can I get a Falwell died zed?”
a “Falwell’s dead” zed?!?!?
that’s cold…
But, then, so’s Jerry…
Is this some strange, cosmic “shiny object?”
What better way to distract all those pliant Evangelicals from the many political revelations coming out these days…
Just to foment some spiritual contemplation among those among us given to such mental meanderings, here’s a thought…not all pernicious conspiracies exist only on the mortal plane…
Will he lie in state?

At least he doesn’t have to live thru the hate he has wrought.
I particularly like this.
It would reflect the distinguished achademic careers of our ‘leadership’
“AWOL” for their military careers
rwcole – caught that as well
JeffreyW – was just headed over to Americablog – was then gonna see if Larry Flynt had a statement
There were many things I disagreed on with Falwell and many things he said that I detested, but still I hope he rests in peace.
And that is all I have to say on this subject…
Now I wish I could go back to hanging out with Comey for a few hours with Marcy asking questions, listening to Jane’s snarky color-commentary…sipping a glass of Chadonnay — now that would be the perfect afternoon! ;)
no love lost for Falwell, but I can’t summon any glee from his passing.
Was Falwell the minister who was friendly with Pres Carter, or was there another?
I hope this leads to a significant shift in the cultural discourse in this country, Falwell was a poisonous voice with far too much influence over the past twenty years. Does anyone know if there’s any succession in place, or will Falwell’s enterprises crumble the way most televangelist empires do when the leader goes away?
cheney_usa @ 33
Does anyone know if it is true that Sun Myung Moonem’ bailed out Falwell’s cchurh recently? Is that a fact or just another insidious internet rumor?
RevDeb @ 15
Thanks for that. RevDeb.
Let’s all have a Campari & soda!
He’s being put up for sainthood by the Christopaths on cable. They are ready for this.
He was one of the nastiest SOBs evolution ever placed on this earth. If there is one I’m sure he’ll rot in hell.
Rock Lobster…. Down! Down! Down!
Name me one thing this guy did to make benefit our glorious nation.
LS @ 32
Sorry. On my screen, LC’s reference to 911 was #23. Would never imagine anyone would kid about more deaths in Iraq. MSM not reporting it is no surprise either.
punaise @ 46
Do you think Fred Phelps and company will attend his funeral?
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/18679412/
…Ron Godwin, Liberty’s executive vice president, said Falwell, 73, had been found unresponsive around 10:45 a.m. and was taken to Lynchburg General Hospital.
Godwin said he was not sure what caused the collapse, but noted that Falwell had “a history of heart challenges.”
“I had breakfast with him, and he was fine at breakfast,” Godwin said. “He went to his office, I went to mine and they found him unresponsive.” …
Lou Costello @ 42
Depends.
Thank fuck for this. The world just got a little saner what with this nutbag now taken up to snuggle with his beloved Jebus.
RevDeb @ 15
Don’t forget his words about MLK Jr. I hope the MSM can refrain from lionizing Falwell. He doesn’t deserve it.
Sandia Blanca @ 7
Ms. ET laughed when I told her. “The devil’s gonna have his hands full!”
here’s a link to a site about the Moonie/Falwell bailout…
Let’s jest talk bout the GOOD things the Reverand did—mmmmm. Hey–someone- help!
Talk about an understatemnt
Will you be attending the funeral Mr. President? Good photo op for the base.
GabrielOak @ 53
I did not refer to 911 in any comment. My comment was that 5 US troops were also killed today.
that was Billy Graham – and remember, Jimmy had him a sister who was a real christian so I doubt he had much to do with Rev Wrong
Tap@40
The man was full of hateful things, but thought they came from God. It is hard to feel for that smug man, but his life, so misdirected, is a pitiful thing.
Sbombo @ 57
You made me laugh so hard I just spit my margarita out of pagan left wing mouth!!! Thank fuck for you!!!
Jerry Falwell, is a true example of an evil man who wrapped himself in a cloak of goodness. He was a hateful man, and a bigot. My favorite quote?
“The Jews are returning to their land of unbelief. They are spiritually blind and desperately in need of their Messiah and Savior.”
Go back to hell Jerry. The sheep will miss you, but the decent will not.
My condolences to his family. As for the rest of us–the truth is he hadn’t been a big factor in national politics for a long time now, so his passing will make little difference. But it is a reminder that the Reagan era is receding ever more quickly.
TexBetsy @ 47
Not sure who you mean; Falwell as all about Ray-guns. Maybe Billy Graham was on speaking terms with Carter and Carter’s home preacher. After all the man did teach adult Sunday School, even though teh Falwells and Robertsons kept trying to deny him as a Christian.)
Boy, was I wrong. There’s no heaven, no hell. I’m just gone.”
his “sermons” caused a lot of pain for those not of his ideology…..he surely was no man who followed christ’s message imho
Here we were all snarky about this on the prev thread and ya’ll just let us dangle!

OMG. “I’m still here, but they can’t hear or see me”.

I like to think that these guys have BIG surprises in store for them on the other side. It’s like that silly joke about Islamic Martyrdom – 70 Virginians meet them in heaven, not 70 Virgins like they had been taught.
try THIS LINK for the Moonie/Falwell story…
He obviously ignored “gluttony” as being against his religion.
I just hope Mr. Falwell receives the ‘just rewards’ he so richly deserves. Nothing more; nothing less.
Bustednuckles @ 17
Refresh and it will go away. I checked and the post was there. No majik trik honest. *g*
An evil, hate-filled voice is forever silent.
Rejoice!
I would hope he had a last Campari before breakfast.
ccmask @ 40
grrrrr…
raven @ 73
Hey bro, I believe Mr. Fakwell was against public dangling!!! So we must be right :)
Sbombo @ 57
Neither Falwell, nor American evangelical Protestantism, generally, have much to do with Jesus, and the only part of the New Testament they seem to enjoy is Revelations. Were there an afterlife, Falwell wouldn’t be spending it with Christ.
I will never wish death upon another human being.
Will he lie in state?
Not one of grace, certainly.
itwasntme @ 77
Thank you. I was trying to figure out how to phrase the same observation.
“Wyatt….Remember what I said about people seein’ a bright light before they die? It ain’t true. I can’t see a damn thing. “
I hope we’re not going to get an executive order or whatever calling for “Rapture Day” and a flag at half-mast.
When I saw Chimpy visited Jamestown and declared “it” the founding part of this country, I had another Orwellian creepy feeling.
Covering both bases…Good luck, Mr. Falwell.

I think Jimmy Cater will do just fine on J-Day. Just an opinion of course.
RIP?
Presser re Falwell on MSNBC…
i’m going to go out on a limb here and parphrase thomas jefferson – i tremble when i reflect that god is just… and wish only enlightenment, truth and mercy on the dead.
on the other hand… i hope (but don’t expect) that he will be remembered among the living accurately for the hatefilled life he led and the harm he has done.

From wiki:
You can watch the video here.

Albatross @ 13
My sentiments exactly.

Money, money, money, Baby! Loved him some money. Loved him some food! Loved to be the center of attention. Loved to tell people what to do. Sure, it was all negative from my perspective but isn’t that the greatest lesson he has taught the world?
I’m a better person for having know him!
Wonder if Mr. Falwell was a millionaire when he passed.

bless those fallen souls for giving this maniac a right to spew his racial, gender, and religious intolerance for so many years (and allowing people to listen to him).. i do hope the family is at peace, but justification of “fighting for freedom” just got a little easier for me today, knowing there is one less bigot out there
sorry for the intolerance on my part, however it needed to be said
“Open the pod bay door, Hell.”
See The Moon-Bush Cash Conduit.

ooooh, maybe they’ll be next!
As a gay man, I can honestly say that he will not be missed by my community. The world is a better place now that Falwell’s dead. His God apparently had enough of his bombast for injustice.

While I will not put my true thoughts in writing (that ol’ NYT headline thingy my mother taught me) I will think them. Those that write them I thank for expressing truth. All the other is just pablum, like the kind passed out everyday in most churches.

Hi egregious. I haven’t had a chance to respond to your e-mail responding to mine yet. Like you, I am too busy tending to everything else around me.
He drew the ire of many when he called Nobel Peace Prize winner and Anglican Archbishop Desmond Tutu a phony.
egregious @ 144
It is right to honor life, Eg. But there are some things i wonder about. When one such as he was, would prefer interracial children like me to never have been born. I feel for his loved ones which are left behind, but i can’t grieve for him. Not in that way.
Ahh he missed seeing his beloved Armageddon.
egregious @ 147
So did he as long as it was the “life” he and his buddies designated. “Hate the scum not the scumbag”?

Bigots like Falwell say the things they do because they think everyone will agree with them. When they are disproved, they retract not out of remorse, but because they think that leaving their bigoted comments out there will diminish them in the eyes of the wider world. As for their followers, with them it’s a wink and a nod. The followers know the apology is just a tactic.
I’m with Thomas Jefferson on this one.
Candy Crowley just called Falwell “a lucifer to liberals…”

Falwell hurt a lot of people for his own gain. Would you rather everybody put on a fake happy face and lie about that?
I regret that Falwell wasted his life and his potential on greed, bigotry, and deceiving the gullible. If you want nicer, you’ll have to find a different guy to remember.

Yeah, perhaps this dip in approval ratings is due to the Gang of 11 that still voted with the president?
Dunno but I’m gonna spin it the way I want it for once!!
Condolences to his family.
Not hating Falwell is more about me than him. I’m gay and felt the sting every time he took the opportunity to disparage all the people he felt responsible for the world’s ills.
Hating him never made me feel better. We all have to live and die with our actions and words. Today I choose not to hate.

He blesses the boys as they stand in line
The smell of gun grease and the bayonets they shine
He’s there to help them all that he can
To make them feel wanted he’s a good holy man
Sky pilot…..sky pilot
How high can you fly
You’ll never, never, never reach the sky
He smiles at the young soldiers
Tells them its all right
He knows of their fear in the forthcoming fight
Soon there’ll be blood and many will die
Mothers and fathers back home they will cry
Sky pilot…..sky pilot
How high can you fly
You’ll never, never, never reach the sky
He mumbles a prayer and it ends with a smile
The order is given
They move down the line
But he’s still behind and he’ll meditate
But it won’t stop the bleeding or ease the hate
As the young men move out into the battle zone
He feels good, with God you’re never alone
He feels tired and he lays on his bed
Hopes the men will find courage in the words that he said
Sky pilot…..sky Pilot
How high can you fly
You’ll never, never, never reach the sky
You’re soldiers of God you must understand
The fate of your country is in your young hands
May God give you strength
Do your job real well
If it all was worth it
Only time it will tell
In the morning they return
With tears in their eyes
The stench of death drifts up to the skies
A soldier so ill looks at the sky pilot
Remembers the words
“Thou shalt not kill”
Sky pilot…..sky pilot
How high can you fly
You never, never, never reach the sky

MSNBC — Abu missed today’s 2 PM dealine for passing on the missing Abu-Rove emails to SJC>
Falwell believed in a vindictive, spiteful God. Falwell made his God in his own image it seems: a real nasty piece of work.
Now that he has moved on to his afterlife (let’s just assume such a thing exists), I can’t decide whether I hope he meets that God or not.
Gonzales has not turned the requested emails over to the Senate Committee – just reported on MSNBC.

HTH.
Maybe he found out he was on the D.C. Madam list ;O

don’t forget this work is called “The Divine Comedy”.

DrDick @ 254
ha, it probably would be a minion bending him over…
J.Falwell chose to mix his religion and his politics and by doing so inflicted upon many a form of “christianity” that often seemed more about vindictiveness and intolerance and much less about compassion and mercy.
That pretty much sums it up.
One Pharisee gone. One fewer advocate of apartheid. One fewer advocate of hating gay people. One fewer proponent of all-out war in the Middle East. One fewer anti-Semite in Jew-loving clothing. One fewer self-righteous creep to worship money and power.
I, too, hate his sins.

Righteous anger can change things. Hatred eats away from within. Let’s keep our focus.
Falwell flunked out of Junior College and then went away to a fully non-accredited bible school for a week or two and came back a pastor!!! HALLYLUYA!!
He called himself doctor- but of course he had no degree whatsoever- which didn’t keep him from tellin people how ta live their lives..

rwcole @ 273
First rational statement made all day on this blog.

George Carlin chimes in on Jerry Falwell…and Pat Robertson…and Ted Haggard…and…
I’ll try to be positive.
Jerry once said on national TV …”If you believe in the bible, you can’t possible be a Democrat.”
I was very hurt by that.

Jerry, I live near the Grand Canyon. And I believe that if there is a God, God is definately a Democrat.

the difference between sharpton and faldwell is that although both are called “reverend”, sharpton has operated in the secular world, and not acted like he was the voice of his god… so whatever questionable acts he did, he did as a man..

P J Evans @ 291
LOL!
I think it is YOU who does not understand that the condition of the heart and the spirit is displayed outwardly.

Al-Ozarka @ 301
Al-Ozarka @ 303
Prove it.
Be happy fer the Rev- he made the grade.
yeah, if that’s the case, i didn’t see any boils and outward pestilence on faldwell, robertson, bin laden, zarqawi, and all their ilk
Al-Ozarka @ 300
and you’re apparently lapping up every crumb…
go figure…

That is evil….

Al-Ozarka at Daddio’s Dark Side:
Too bad when Jesus attempts to take Jerry into his arms to forgive him for all the bigoted hatred he has spewed over the years…
“Rev.” Falwell will push Him away, shouting: “Get away from me you liberal Homo!” (Capital ‘H’)
Told my wife that Fallwell had croaked. She said “good” and went on about her business. Not a bit of hatred.
pardon as we lance a boil or 50 at the Lake today….
tomorrow we’ll start fresh…
where will you be?
As a former fundamentalist, I’m familiar with Mr. Falwell. I don’t rejoice in the death of any human being. I do hope that he stands before his Maker and feels shame for the hateful, destructive and divisive things he said and did while on the earth.
I also hope he has a much better understanding of the New Testament and the teachings of Christ now as well.

Falwell was to Christianity what bin Laden is to Islam.

The ‘Moral Majority’ is NEITHER! The ‘Moral Majority’ is NEEEIIIITHEERRR!!! The ‘Moral Majority is NEEEEIIIIIIIIIITHEEEERRRRR!!!!!!!!!
Lou Costello @ 310
He already rejected the teachings of Yeshua al Nazarat. His ministry was the antithesis of everything his “savior” taught.
Lou @ 312
No, it’s ‘you liberal Jewish homo!’
(On the basis of his public speeches, I think he hated everyone who didn’t agree with his views on everything. Sorry, trolls: he was a narrow-minded bigot.)
*ilbo @ 317
like “no child left behind” underfunds education, like “the patriot act” is the same thing as “the enabling act authored by hitler, like “the clean air act” dumps crap in our childrens air, like “tax breaks” gives middle class money to the wealthiest people on the planet, like this president’s notion of protecting this country means attacking one that poses no threat while abandoning the battle against terrorists and facilitating their numbers
and so too;
“the moral majority”
brendancalling, I’m down with punaise.
When attempting to converse with Al-Osarka, remember who you’re talking to…just a guess.
Cozumel @ 316
faldwell didn’t walk around with an AK, and bin laden never hit the mainstream like faldwell, but in their narrow minded bigotry and intolerance for anyone not of their beliefs, they were IDENTICAL
JEP @ 177
Figures. What a steaming pile. He’s the one who demonized us, not the other way around.
Candy Crowley a steamin pile?
That’s pretty apt.
if there is a heaven and if there is a hell … well, i hope mr. falwell has enough marshmallows where he’s going
GabrielOak @ 167
I can only say this much. If it were one of ours, the right would be making lots of sick jokes, lots of ‘em. A lot more than I’ve seen on here, I must say.
Lou Costello @ 324
Just like a liberal to give an idiotic opinion on something he/she has absolutely no knowledge of.
Al-Ozarka @ 329
You’re a Liberal?
falwell wasn’t a decent, concerned, clear thinking person that one could simply disagree with
falwell pretty much called down christian fatwas on everyone he didn’t like
good riddance
wtf @ 324
That really would be hell, to run out of marshmallows.

And you…as you remember the life of this man.
Judge not that ye be not judged, now.
So the troll has no point. Time to stop feeding. Any mods around to clean up the mess or shut it down?
John Casper @ 323
Good for you.
Al-Ozarka @ 333
What are you? The energizer bunny of anger?
We should have a Jerry roast- remembering together his greatest hits.
I liked it when he tried to bet anyone on teevee with him a big steak dinner with all the trimmings that Clinton was lyin bout his blo*job.
Jerry’s mouth started visibly salivating as he made the challenge– and he was gettin a gastronomical hard on just thinkin bout the meal.

Shouldn’t you be out oppressing someone? I’m sure there are little animals somewhere around your house that you haven’t tortured yet. And I think ‘24′ is on A&E right now. Hurry, you’re missing all the good parts.
Al-Ozarka @ 331
Unlike you and the late (ir)Reverend, I am not a Christian and thus not bound by the teachings of its prophet. However, also unlike you and Falwell, I actually have read and have a great respect for many of the teachings of the historic Yeshua al Nazarat.
Mandrake @ 325:
“I can only say this much. If it were one of ours, the right would be making lots of sick jokes, lots of ‘em. A lot more than I’ve seen on here, I must say.”
Of course they would. I’m just saying that the inhumanity of the right should not be a guide to or pretext for our own conduct.
I wonder if she knows the original meaning of ‘Lucifer’. (There’s irony for you!)
Hugh @ 336
Wow…I thought this was an intelligent, progressive site. Who would imagine (do I sound like Condi) that just ’cause some (insert your own adjectives here) body (on the OTHER side) dies, that suddently so many people here are acting out their anger at Each Other?
Breathe, folks. Breathe.
Guess who: “AIDS is not just God’s punishment for homosexuals; it is God’s punishment for the society that tolerates homosexuals.”
Strategerie @ 315
GabrielOak @ 342
a man is judged by his deeds. someone who walks around the field shitting on everyone else his whole life shouldn’t be surprised to find himself buried with that same shitpile.
Bottom line, all of you who had negative things to say about Fallwell at the news of his death should really reevaluate what it means to be a decent person.
Remind me, did all the neocons say nice things about Saddam when he died?
Remember him in his own words:
“Segregationist politicians like Lester Maddox and George Wallace [11]. He often spoke out in favor of the racist position in those days, for example, in 1958:
“
If Chief Justice Warren and his associates had known God’s word and had desired to do the Lord’s will, I am quite confident that the 1954 decision would never have been made…. The facilities should be separate. When God has drawn a line of distinction, we should not attempt to cross that line.”
GabrielOak @ 342
Naturally. My point was that, by comparison, people on here are being pretty nice overall.
I am certain by now that Jerry Falwell has learned that God and Jesus are both Liberals.
I’m reminded of the munchkins — hi ho the merryo, the wicked witch is dead.
wtf @ 328
CNN, Billy Graham said Jerry leaves a ‘giant vacuum’ in this world. This from the great advisor to despots, would-be-dictators, and pervaders of violence the earth has ever witnessed. Jerry did resemble a marshmallow in his last days.
I have this overwhelming urge to put on my Tinky Winky costume.
I hear Fred Phelps is going to be at the funneral. He’s the guest speaker!
I loathe the man, but I don’t hate him. ;-)
Bon Voyage! Don’t pack a sweater!

hate would be the wrong word but i certainly found Falwell contemptible ……
I miss Molly Ivins, Kurt Vonnegut, and Kitty Carlisle. For them, I’m sad there’s no heaven.
Today, I wish there was a hell, and that Satan had habaero burritos last night and needs to squirt out a few.
All I can say is GOOD RIDDANCE to the mf.
Al_ozarka -
How sad for you that you confuse the word of God with any of Falwell’s unChristian hate works.
I fell sorry for those who call themselves Christians yet embrace the hate message Falwell and his like carried into our nation’s churches.
You follow a false prophet: repent!
Al-Ozarka @ 285
the troll is now claiming that we are all rejoicing about falwell’s death (at his website). i guess he doesn’t know how to read. he certainly doesn’t care to comprehend what he reads. typical ……..

“Against stupidity, the very gods themselves must contend in vain.” – Friedrich von Shille
I too feel bad for his family but the Nation is better off for his passing.
Can’t say I feel bad for his family. I don’t know his family. Are they sad about losin him? Do they share his views.
Pretending to “feel sorry” for em would be to presuppose too much- an inappropriate sentiment it seems to me.
lolo @ 173
Tap Duncan @ 41
Amen.
kirk murphy @365: Indeed, Falwell’s teachings, and all those of his ilk who have been trying to run the political process for years, have absolutely nothing, nothing to do with Christianity.
Suggested reading for Al_Ozarka: The Politics of Christianity, by Obery Hendricks.
Finally, a breath of fresh air! Kudos to the author!
Tap Duncan @ 41
Gonna be interesting to see if Bush issues some sorta statement.
Of course, more protracted, pointless discussions on religion to come on the networks and cable news. Brace yourselves.
I’m really sick of it. I just want to yell into the teevee set: “FUNDIES AIN’T GONNA VOTE FOR NO MORMON, YA DOPES! HE’S TOAST! END OF STORY! HANG IT UP AND MOVE ON ALREADY!”
OMG, I completely forgot the Pub debates in SC are tonight! What will the candidates say about Jerry’s passing???
Poor Tinkywink.
Aakash @ 20
Man in the Mists @ 379
I think when something like this happens, they troll the progressive blogs exactly for the purpose of reporting on what nasty things we are saying and how evil we are so Michelle Malkin can write about it on her site.
hey! jerry falwell: heads up bud.
the day you eventually show up in heaven, all those folks you disrespected for their personal lifestyle choices, because you were holier than they, all those who you demeaned and ridiculed…. well, I hope you’re ready for them, because they’ll be there in full force, just waiting for the chance to give you your due.
and oh yeah – good f**kin’ riddance.
Almost good enough news to make me belive in a god.
There is a sign:
“God save me from your believers”
God came throught.
Jerry and Pat after 911 made those statements about why they came after us.
I think several of his buddies made the anti-islamic statements about the Tsunami in the indian ocean back a few years ago.
I guess god finally woke up and did the right thing to jerry.
Jerry Falwell was a loyal servant of the butcher god jehovah
And this particular troll is a variant which actually jumps in and tries to goad people into saying such things. And when (not if) they get banned, then they have another thing to whine (brag?) about.
Man in the Mists @ 384
Excellent observations; I noted the names were unfamiliar, as you pointed out. But not unexpected, it’s happened here and elsewhere before under similar circumstances. You’ll note the brevity of content with this post, which is both shrewd and laudable considering the attention this thread has received from trolls, thus avoiding nasty sidetracks.
Burn in hell, you bigoted bastard.
I hope Hugo Chavez and Castro are toasting each other right now and enjoying a nice Montecristo.
All we need now is to complete the trifecta….where’s Cheney for starters?
Al Brito @ 374
You’re welcome, I have NO pity on this man. We have had to endure this down turning of our great republic as a result of this mans’ bullshit, hang tough- Tap
estiv @ 69
CHAMPAGNE FOR EVERYONE!!!!!!!
cal @ 389
Amen!
I can only hope that right about now, Jesus is sitting down with dear Jerry, having a heart-to-heart about the fact that He Himself is gay: “C’mon Jerry, I ran around with 12 other men, and all my friends were named Mary!”
Al-Ozarka @ 279
Ooohhh, do I sense a bit of dislike creeping through our pious little critic?
What does a Mark Twain quote and the death of Falwell have to do with Al Sharpton?
You got a bit of the bigot in ya, boy? That why you’se all fired pissed about folks ’round here talkin’ the truth bout old Jerry?

Still dancing…and will be for three days and three nights.
If you want to restrain your joy in the name of religion or some exemplary ‘kindness’, or just fear of hell, be my guest.
For me, flowers and fresh air for all!
Satan has called Jerry home.
Matthew 7:21-23
And?
