Ever since Tommy Franks called Doug Feith "The stupidest fucking guy on the planet," an endless stream of Republican challengers have been vying to claim that mantle for themselves. Attorney General Alberto Gonzales, if not the clear-cut winner, should at least be considered a very strong finalist for the honor. Bad enough that he didn't even try to make the politicization of the DOJ look good; bad enough that he didn't even try to lie to Congress convincingly, managing to piss off all but the most loyal Bushies on the Senate Judiciary Committee. But he doesn't even learn from his mistakes:
Attorney General Alberto Gonzales said Tuesday he relied heavily on his deputy to oversee the firings of U.S. attorneys, appearing to distance himself from his departing second-in-command.
Gonzales' comments came the day after Deputy Attorney General Paul McNulty said he would step down by the end of summer, a decision that people familiar with his plans said was hastened by the controversy over last year's firings of eight prosecutors.
"At the end of the day, the recommendations reflected the views of the deputy attorney general. He signed off on the names," Gonzales told reporters….
"The one person I would care about would be the views of the deputy attorney general, because the deputy attorney general is the direct supervisor of the United States attorneys," Gonzales said.
See, the problem with trashing someone on their way out the door is that you make it a lot harder for them to be a good soldier and keep their mouth shut. Not only does it amplify the bad blood, but it practically forces the trashee to speak out just to defend their own reputation. Gonzo's DOJ disparaged and threatened the fired US Attorneys, and as a result, some of them felt compelled to defend themselves, making an ugly situation even uglier. And now Gonzo has just repeated that mistake with McNulty, who is far more knowledgeable about how the firings went down than any of the USAs were. Indeed, I suspect that this might stimulate McNulty to dig a little deeper into his memories of where the names on the firing list came from, since he'll be wanting to prove his own non-responsibility a little more definitively. Brilliant.
Look, I know that being a Bush Republican means that you can't admit error in any meaningful way; I get that. But to give someone an incentive to talk at the same time their primary constraint goes away? Twice??? Why not just thank them for their service and mouth some sweet nothings about how much you'll miss them? How hard can that be?
Of course, McNulty's not actually out the door yet, and there's no guarantee that he'll talk – I'm just saying that Gonzo has given him every reason to.
Completely Unrelated Programming Note: Frontline is airing a report on the Bush Administration's domestic spying activities, right about… now.

whoo-hoo!! I love an AG-in-the-terlet-day. I’ll do my best to notify downstairs of this upstairs.
oh man, missed it by that much…
Hiya Eli!
Hiya, LL! Hiya, Pat!
And I didn’t even say anything about his bizarre and grossly inappropriate visit to Ashcroft’s hospital room…
That hospital visit alone makes him at least the crassest guy on the planet.
Evening, Eli
“being a Bush Republican means” never having to say your sorry
Eli in the lake house!
LoudounLib @ 6
Only Gonzo and the rest of the Bush crew could turn Ashcroft into a sympathetic, almost heroic character.
Hiya, Elliott!
OT-Anyone watching the debate?
Eli @ 5
I can just see him turning the crank on the leg traction device, like in the cartoons. “Will you sign it now, or do we need another notch of encouragement?”
Even though Franks was right about Feith, Franks is no brainiac himself. Our AG learned well a long time ago. Do whatever Rove wants him to do, and just make sure you cover your ass while doing it. That way guys like McNulty and Sampson take the hit instead.
With my history of labored linking, I’ll just refer you (then I’ll try a link) to today’s press briefing. I have completely lost respect for Tony Snow, who downplayed John Aschcroft’s illness as a simple appendix issue. He’s unbelievable.
Gonzales is unbelievable.
Rove is evil.
Cheny is certifiable.
Thank goodness for Comey and Company. Can’t wait to hear more.
In typical fashion, the White House refuses to comment except to take jabs.
AGAG really is the slowest learner I’ve ever seen in public life. Did he not get it that the USAs went public because their performance was criticized? Did he not get it that McNulty, on his way out, might not want his own performance criticized, seeing how he’s given up his own ambition to be a Federal judge because of AGAG’s mess?
The smirk during AGAG’s National Press Club Q&A was uncontrollable. Surely Leahy will want to wipe it off.
Won’t you please, Chairman Conyers, impeach this embarassing AG?
punaise @ 10
Abu Torture…
solai @ 10
I’ll let the C & L crew post the highlights(or in the Repubs case .. lowlights).
punaise @ 11
they called Newt G on his cell and got pointers. newt has major experience in coercing sick peoople in hospitals in re legal matters…
I can hear Gonzales’ testimony about the hospital visit:
I don’t recall that meeting, Senator.
solai @ 10
Not a chance of a snowball in hell in the summertime, if that answers your question.
Joe Klein’s conscience @ 12
Yeah, but I don’t think suddenly blaming everything on McNulty was a very smart (or believable) thing to do.
TeddySanFran @ 14
Don’t you understand why AGAG has that smirk? He got it from King Smirk himself. The Decider. The Commander Guy. He’s just doing what he is told.
solai @ 10
I’m doin’ the NSA here
Joe Klein’s conscience @ 12
Please pardon the correction…
Other Pat @ 18
I now understand that I was in AG Ashcroft’s hospital room…
Hey Eli -
a little housekeeping
For Whomever was looking for the Comey testimony tape downthread -
Selise is a technical goddess !!!!
it is audio only – worth it! worth it! worth it!
Thanks a million Selise!
Joe Klein’s conscience @ 21
Dubya likes to surround himself with Mini-Mes.
Joe Klein’s conscience @ 21
Bush planted it on him
Eli @ 20
McNulty signed off on the firings though. So AGAG has an out. In his eyes anyway. Lets see if Conyers and Leahy have the guts to impeach AGAG now.
Eli @ 20
on, we must all remember a point not being emphasized. mcnulty WONT LEAVE (Resig not effective) until Congress confirms a candidate. he’s deliberately blocking a femtosecond recess appointment (femtoseconds are very small units of time, very very small. Chimpy is planning on using the next femtosecond recess to appoint wolfowitz ambassator to somewhere…)
TeddySanFran @ 14
I know I’ve said this before here:
Some folks have many years of experience.
Other have one year of experience repeated many time.
Abu is of the latter group.
Getting on board with tinpot is like joining a cult. Just leave your brain at the door.
solai @ 10
where?
Eli @ 20
. brazen . shameless . are two words that come to mind
dakine01 @ 23
Nice one. ;-)
Alfred Kelgarries @ 29
Which reminds me of a question I had…
One of the reasons that’s been floated for Bush not firing Gonzo is that he doesn’t want to have all this dirty laundry aired in a confirmation hearing – wouldn’t it get aired in a DAG confirmation hearing as well?
Snowjob
Talking of slow learners. Gonzales, Harriet Miers and Scooter make the Three Stooges look absolutely brilliant.

Eli @ 20
And didn’t he say in both testimonies that he did not know. Perjury, much? He cannot possibly say now that he suddenly remembered that it was McNulty.
cbl @ 25 –
thanks for the kinds words… but not really – audio hijack pro is my friend.
I’m confused (yeah so w
hat else is new). Wasn’t the memo giving Sampson and Goodling the hiring and firing authority specifically designed to avoid the attention of McNulty?
And McNulty supposedly signed off on the firings of people who he was kept out of the loop on, as far as selecting them?
What the heck am I missing?
Eli @ 35
yes. thus the instant recess appointment trick, which mcnulty has blocked. look for plenty of foot dragging by the white house on picking a name. unless they decide to offer the AG to specter and DAG to kyl, then it might happen…
If Karl is such a smarty pants, how come he spent all that time in college without graduating?
Oklahoma kiddo @ 37
When I was growing up in Kentucky we had a saying about folks like them:
“They may be dumb but they sure are slow.”
When and where will Gonzales be asked about that late-night visit to Ashcroft’s hospital room? We ought to have cameras rolling for that.
Helen @ 41
Sudden Recall
thank you, dakine and solai!
jayt @ 43
I think that’s a separate issue, pertaining to lower-level career employees. Sampson and Goodling did not have hiring-and-firing power over the USAs. Not formally, at least.
solai @ 40
Fox News
I can honestly say that I have no idea whatsoever what channel Fox News is on in my cable plan.
hwmnbn @ 47
AGAG missed his docs turnover deadline today. the next step is to subpoena his little behind. if he refuses that, impeachment can then be considered (him not BC)….
Oklahoma kiddo @ 45
Cause his professors had math; he had his own math. (He lacked a math class, possibly also foreign language . . . say, like, honesty?
TeddySanFran @ 49

IANAL but IIRC a doc subpoena that is blown off is usually followed by a person subpoena for the guy who blew off the first subpoena. any more knowledgeable commenter should immediately correct me if I am worng here…
Helen @ 58
The doc request was a subpoena. I think Alfred is saying the next step is to subpoena Abu back before committee to explain his lack of compliance with the document subpoena.
There’s a rich white guy speaking unconvincingly about the lowest rung on the economic ladder.

Same thing in those days.

They took a break in the middle of the debate?
Can you believe it? there are COMMERCIALS during the Fox debate — yet another confirmation of the Dems spurning Fox. Can you imagine the commercials Fox would run during a Dem debate?
check out this graphic from faux news about the debate. wonder if they did one of these for every candidate. look what got billing ABOVE family…

Good to see you on the front page again Eli. I may be headed your way next week. On topic, the neocons severly punked our spooks, and the only pushback has been the milquetoast whiney mea culpa by Tenet. Whoa. Spooks are supposed to know stuff. When will that dam really break, and an even better question is what is holding back the flood?

C’mon, you know it doesn’t work that way, spooks are totally expert at psy-ops. A low level spook meets with a low level staffer and shows them some photos or docs and off-handedly remarks how unfortunate it would be if they somehow ended up in the wrong hands. The message sent is if you want to f*ck a porcupine you must be very careful.
I see no pushback of self preservation and do not understand it.

This Frontline special is chilling. Recommend that anyone who can, watch it — it’s no wonder the DOJ is falling apart (thousands of “National Security Letters” improperly issued). 199 data mining projects in more than 50 government agencies
I can now imagine why companies like SAS do not want to go public. Their practices would then be open to the public’s interest.
My guess is that Rove has the power to control anyone he wants if they have something to hide in their personal life. It’s clear he can get the information for those purposes.
martha @ 135
IIRC, didn’t he run as a Dem and campaign against Tommy?
Jane (nyc) @ 138
and they had plenty of time to get the info before we knew about it.
Someone needs to review the tape of this debate and see which candidates got their names onscreen and which didn’t. I’m detecting a pattern (”who’s this guy,” I’m thinking) but I’m unwilling to review the replay.
Jane (nyc) @ 138
If so, it would be interesting to see what would happen if just *one* blackmailee spoke up, took the hit, and announced that he was being blackmailed? That would be pretty devastating, if reported.
dakine01@139
Ed ran as a Libertarian after Tommy became HHS secty. He ran against Tommy’s milquetoast Lt. Gov, who lost, thank heavens. He’s quite a character, and not so nutso.
Elliott @ 140
Does this explain why the Dems have been so passive until recently?
I haven’t had time to read all of the upthread comments but hasn’t McNulty already been interviewed? My recollection is that he has already told inspectors that he was present when Rove coached Moschella.
If so, I think that this is the Slime Machine getting geared up to discredit McNulty when more of his testimony to the house investigators becomes available to the general public. In other words, they may be aware that very damaging statements have already been made but not released yet.
Romney speaks with too many double negatives — perhaps intentionally.
Loo Hoo @ 118
jayt, what’s up with the recruiter business?
turns out he was in the National Guard, but not an official recruiter. He was also doing an independent contractor-recruiting gig for some firm out of Birmingham Alabama. Got paid $2,000 for every guy he signed up.
As of this afternoon, he is now no longer a member of the Indiana National Guard nor an employee of the Alabama firm – they fired him too.
My son is supposed to meet with an Indianapolis Police Detective tomorrow, and then we’ll decide whether to follow up with criminal charges.
I got Senators Lugar and Bayh involved, congresswoman Julia Carson (who was the one who came through for me) the Governor’s office, and the commanding officer of the Indiana National Guard.
He’s toast.
Lighting round — immigration!
TeddySanFran @ 141
you are wearing safety goggles, aren’t you?
Jane (nyc) @ 138
Well, there is that. Perhaps Rove has our spooks spooked? You know, this whole sordid administration reminds me of my childhood where I would threaten to tell on my brother, who would remind me of my own malfeasance, and my sister would threaten us both with her own mental notes and we would turn on her and remind her of her waywardness.
Eventually an overwhelmed Mom would get inundated with all the atrocities committed by each of us as the apple cart got turned over.

Haven’t been looking at that thing called a debate.
Same old mean spirited stuff. Tax cuts for the well off and spending cuts for services.
AP – Republican presidential contenders agreed on the need for lower taxes and vowed to crack down on federal spending Tuesday night in campaign debate. They pledged to reduce the massive federal bureaucracy.

didn’t you see the NO RECURSION sign when you came in the door. my head is starting to hurt again…
Which was my intent. Micro to meta in humanistic terms.
OFG — you are right. Our spooks have been spooked since Rove told Tweety that Mrs. Wilson was “fair game.” Since then, it’s been tough for active and retired spooks to speak their mind about this Admin’s illegalities.
We may yet reach a tipping point.
A little OT, but…
Does anybody know when Monica Goodling testifies? Something made me think it was this week, but now I’m doubtful. Any light anyone can shed is appreciated.

BUT…who’s the mom in this scenario?
do not relax your guard. this sort of takedown may push the bozo over the edge into stalking or even worse….
Believe me – I know that. And it scares me. But it seemed to me that it was either go full bore or do nothing at all – for better or worse, I went after him – and pray that I did the right thing.
Welcome back to the Front Page Eli,
had the same initial thought about Abu as yourself – do they not learn anything ?!!? blah, blah, blah, but I reached a point where I’m thinking he poured gasoline on the McNulty fire intentionally as a means to further muddy the waters and continue to run out the clock
ITMFA!
Indidentally, are there any non-whites to be seen in this South Carolina crowd? Smart move by the Dems to get to SC first, at an historically black college.
jayt @ 168
do not doubt yourself, you did. i daresay there are thousands of persons right now lurking who either have already or will soon experience similar indicidents and the military gets more and more desperate for “volunteers”. your actions will serve as a shining example and may help save dozens or even hundreds of lives.
Rudy sez we have to be sensible about immigration.

Who cares what Gonzo says anymore. He doesn’t remember anything.
Let’s get some papers. Documents. Emails. Or put Gonzo in jail for witholding evidence. It’s killing me.
This blows my mind!!
Apparently, the guy who saved us from being in an intentional or accidental war with Iran this past April is US Navy Admiral William Fallon:
At a mid-February meeting of top civilian officials over which Secretary of Defence Gates presided, there was an extensive discussion of a strategy of intimidating Tehran’s leaders, according to an account by a Pentagon official who attended the meeting given to a source outside the Pentagon. The plan involved a series of steps that would appear to Tehran to be preparations for war, in a manner similar to the run-up to the 2003 invasion of Iraq.
But Fallon, who was scheduled to become the CENTCOM chief Mar. 16, responded to the proposed plan by sending a strongly-worded message to the Defence Department in mid-February opposing any further U.S. naval buildup in the Persian Gulf as unwarranted.
“He asked why another aircraft carrier was needed in the Gulf and insisted there was no military requirement for it,” says the source, who obtained the gist of Fallon’s message from a Pentagon official who had read it.
Fallon’s refusal to support a further naval buildup in the Gulf reflected his firm opposition to an attack on Iran and an apparent readiness to put his career on the line to prevent it. A source who met privately with Fallon around the time of his confirmation hearing and who insists on anonymity quoted Fallon as saying that an attack on Iran “will not happen on my watch”.
Asked how he could be sure, the source says, Fallon replied, “You know what choices I have. I’m a professional.” Fallon said that he was not alone, according to the source, adding, “There are several of us trying to put the crazies back in the box.”
Several of us? God, I hope so!
TeddySanFran @ 170
I don’t think it would have made any difference. In fact, the only surprise is that the Redubyacans didn’t hold it at Bob Jones.
TeddySanFran @ 172
he also made peace with that iowa farm family his staff whacked, supposedly went and did a personal apology and talked them into being local chairs of his campaign. maybe he’s decided he might as well be hung for a sheep instead of a lamb and say what he actually thinks…???
Duncan Hunter sez the “back door is closed.”
Has he asked Lindsay Graham, Mitch McConnell, and David Dreier about that?
jayt @ 147

which is very scary, if true, given the dynamics of 2.5.08
Wait, what happened? Sounds like someone was *way* out of control.
Indiana Natl Guard recruiter signed up my son’s step-brother and then got it in his head that Nick was trying to sabotage the enlistment. He threatened, in a phone call I was listening in on, to blow my son’s “fucking head off”. Lots of threatening text messages. And had been at Nick’s apartment earlier in the day, but left because he’d forgotten to bring his gun.
The guy’s way whacked, and I’m hoping i did the right thing by bringing him down.
Oilfieldguy: apple cart is a great analogy, just substitute honey wagon for this mob.
cbl @ 169
Thanks, cbl!
Only in this administration could anyone possibly think pouring gasoline on the fire would be a *good* idea. But then, that’s pretty much their entire Middle East strategy…
Ed*ard Teller @ 175
I don’t recognize the IPNS outfit. are they legit or not? if legit, this is huge stuff, but could it be false flag or other bushprop?
jayt @ 168
well, for what it’s worth, we’re standing right beside you, in a cyber kind of way.
TeddySanFran @ 178
TSF,
Oh, how I admire your wit and wisdom!
And for all you FDLers who can bear to watch the debate, I bow down. The Frontline special was easier for to tolerate. I lived under Rudy’s reign and will skip any opportunity to have to hear him again.
Thanks for the reports though.
OMG-Congressman Paul(?) is really attacking the war.
jayt @ 181
You are absolutely doing the right thing, and backing up your correct action by engaging your Senators and Congresswoman in this effort. Please proceed and keep updated. Congratulations.
jayt @ 181
Jeez, jayt, that’s nuts – yet somehow unsurprising.
Stay safe, man.

He is a true Libertarian, for good and ill.
Did you hear him? Rudy slammed him.
Helen @ 167
Boy, is that ever a good point. David Broder? Bobo Brooks? Doughy Pantload? Timmeh? Tweety?
Who ya gonna tell? I am being facetious of course, and in the process, trying to ignite as many tin foil hats as possible.
Dear pups, democracy is not a spectator sport. Jane has graciously provided us a format, as yet unrecognized by many pundits. Follow the gentle urgings of Pach and Suin and CHS. Let’s throw this nation upon our shoulders and drag it to the top of the shining hill.
Read what Howie says and give five bucks once in awhile. Call someone who is supposed to represent you. Hell, go down to the local office and meet their staffers. Smile at them and shake their hand.
Tell them where you agree and disagree and agree. Build a sandwich with the disagreement in the middle and always let them know how much you appreciate them dedicating their lives to public service.
Be the good guy. Stand politics on its head by telling them to go to hell and make them look forward to the trip.
I’m watching on ‘mute’. Did he get booed?
Tancredo’s light in his loafers, and I say that as a light-loafer myself

The article’s author, Gareth Porter, is the person who first – and correctly – announced the Iranian peace overtures to the USA at the time of the Iraq invasion in 2003. He’s more of a Southeast Asia expert, but he’s been very accurate lately.

ANOTHER commercial break.
Well, at least Tweety and Brian Williams didn’t give them breaks.
AND, Brit (dead gay son having an affair with a Congressman) Hume announced the next topic before the break — dealing with the next terrorist attack on the Homeland!

The Oilfieldguy Manifesto!
UP the Revolution!
Next series of questions: Premised on a fictional, but we think plausible, attack.
In other words, if the next season of 24 comes true, what would you do?
McCain speaking about 999 of 1000 cases where torture isn’t needed.
TeddySanFran @ 210
Is this like the odious Brian Williams’ question to the Dems on what they’d do if TWO cities were attacked?
TeddySanFran @ 210
“Would you make fudge, or lemonade?”
Rudy: waterboarding YES!!

TeddySanFran @ 211

Applause for Rudy for supporting torture. Who the hell is in this audience?
Romney wants to DOUBLE Gitmo
TeddySanFran @ 214

Teh Base
Republicans on torture … argh!
Ron Paul before saying 9/11 was response to our overthrow of the democratic govt of Iran with the Shah and our treatment of Iraq in the 90s made their heads explode …. good for him!!!
Mitt would double the size of the gitmo jail.
TT: Trust but verify !!
[when in doubt, quote Mr Nancy]
for those of you who are mathmatically challenged, like Wofowitless, y’know, the head of the world bank who said Iraq would be able pay for their own occupation and reconstruction with oil revenues, a nanosecond is to a second what a second is to thirty six years.

Powerline, A$$rocket, Ann Coulter, Rush Limburger, LGF and Malkin.
Dakine – yep but this time it’s 3 cities and another one coming …
Oilfieldguy @ 225
okay, how about a femtosecond?
I think Jon Stewart should air Brit Hume’s questions, while bleeping Senator Brownback’s name as if it is a dirty word.
Which, if you think about it, it is.
So have they gotten to the “Who is the greatest American Ever: Ronald Reagan or Jerry Falwell?” question yet?
solai @ 223

Living in NYC when Rudy was mayor was torture.
I’m originally from the south….and I now understand more fully why we have so many southern tourists — self flagellation.

Bunch of Macho as***les. I HATE Macho as***les.
Torture them, imprison them, bomb them.
John McCain said no to torture/
McCain asks — “what happens to our military if we torture?”
Does not realize Teh Base does not care.
Gilmore was governor during the 911 attacks, clearly he resents Rudy’s trademark
Well, the base word being fem, which must have something to do with a chick getting ready for something or another, obviously means STFU I’ll be there when I’m good and ready and you shall be pleased when that occurs.
Oilfieldguys know how to relent to a greater force.

VictorLaszlo @ 255
Tancredo’s reply, “What do you mean “if”?”…

Tony doesn’t see the irony, does he?
TeddySanFran @ 277
Now this is where we catch them all in lies.
They all (each) would approve of cloning themselves…….given that egomania is the number one requisite quality for a Rethuglican presidential candidate.

412 — more information (411) than I needed, or TMI (too much information)
ironranger @ 283
Irony, compassion, satire, and humor are just a few of the things that escape the nutters.
One thing Paul said tonight (and he spoke very frankly) was that he didn’t want the vote to be to give the pres ‘auth to use force’ against Iraq. He wanted an up or down vote on WAR w/ Iraq. No hiding behind that misleading phrase. War with Iraq…yes or no.
Elliots throwing rock at me! Someone make him stop before I need a tissue.
Jayt,
An independent recruiter making $2000. per enlistment? I’ve never heard of an independent recruiter. Something new since W?
ironranger @ 283
Since Tony’s opened the discussion (as the defense bar might say) can somone ask Tony tomorrow if his BUTTHOLE works?
Jane (nyc) @ 284
Someone should ask, “Good answer Rep. Tancredo. Now, another hypothetical… The terrorists have destroyed every major city in America and you need to repopulate the country. In the name of saving ‘Western Civilization’ would you allow Ronald Reagan to be cloned?”

Hannity reminding viewers that McCain was a POW.
TeddySanFran: Someone should have asked Tony how his brain worked after his “appendectomy”.
TeddySanFran @ 314
sorry Rudy, ya gotta go with the oath you have, not the oath you want to have.
I saw a billboard for Santorum once while I was in PA. He was holding a rifle, but it loked like he was holding it upside down like he was ready to club a baby seal.

So, what do you think? Did they poison Ashcroft thinking that it would be easier to get Comey to sign off?
Elliott @ 315
hee-hee. thanks for treating my allusional state to a giggle…
Loo Hoo @ 290
Yep. $1,000 on enlistment, another $1,000 when recruit goes for Basic Training. Company’s name is Docupak (short for Document & Packaging Brokers, Inc.) Nothwithstanding the strange name, they advertise themselves as a marketing company. The program (which I was told is used in every state) is called G-RAP (Guard Recruiting Asssistance Program).
Contract was awarded in 2002.
Not that I got all anal in researching or anything.

This is easy! We can all live through a Newt candidacy. It’s a dream for Democrats — the ultimate convergence of hubris and hypocriscy.
We could sell tickets to this.
Michael Bloomberg is scheduled to have one-on-one TV debate on station to be bought later.
Helen @ 344
no the correctly punctuated remark is:
“I’m trying to EAT, people.” (as in addressing the people posting wrestling videos which I foolishly click on…while eating…)
and for those who might take it sexually, kindly get your minds out of the gutter. you are crowding those of us already here.

So what is the angle for someone profiting by supplying cannon fodder for Dubyas Best Plan Evah! Are they usng tricksy marketing like Doonsebury highlighted in the tobacco campaign, where a particular brand branded itself as the hippest, chillest, downest, baddest brand available?
Think high gloss ultra hip ads depicting Camels playing pool and shit.

Nothing would surprize me on the day I learned FBI Chief Mueller had to personally order the acting AG’s FBI detail to physically resist White House securty goons.
But – IIRC – Ashcroft’s pancreatitis was secondary to (teh result of, in human speak) obstruction by gallstones.
Both obesity and the tradtional Rethug diet of fat dead animals and live animals’ fat tend to predispose us to gallbladder/gallstones disease (what with gall being the stuff our body uses to phsyically break up the fat we chow down.)
Hope my doubts aren’t too galling.

Alfred, thanks for your kindness – but with the Mockingbird project and NTK, even you may not know who among your spook contacts has a friend who has a friend…
Looking at this from an organizer’s perpsective, I see two strategic goals:
Protect jayt and family.
Destroy private recruiting.
that whole duality thing
Making private recruiting public knowledge is one of our objectives.
Our tactics for attaining that objective can be diverse. We’re decentralized and autonomous at the Lake, so a diversity of tactics is likely to be the best fit for participants with heterogenous skils and backgrounds.
This makes a “parallel processing” form of media outreach really easy – and also establishes a nice parity among the folks casting their lines in the media pool…
jayt @ 362
thanks, jayt.
coming from you, that means a lot.

“There’s so much water in the air that I’m coming into the kitchen to finish,”
This snark (from Bob Johnson at Daily Kos) is too good not to share:
(ANS, The Afterlife) Echoing his comments made after 9-11 that the terrorist attack was caused by a litany of “evil forces,” the late Jerry Falwell said today from the afterlife that “pagans, abortionists, gays, feminists, lesbians, the ACLU, People for the American Way, Al Gore, Daily Kos and other immoral, liberal groups and individuals bear full responsibility for the heart attack that has claimed my earthly life.”
Falwell went to add that, unlike his apology following his post-9-11 comments, he will “not be apologizing this time because there are no liberals where I’m going. So they can kiss my fat, dead ass.”
There’s more, and it’s worth it.
Alfred Kelgarries @ 247
I think it’s 31.7 million years, not a hundred million years. It’s late, but that still looks wrong.
. . . . uhhhhh, it was McNulty. Yeh, Yeh, that’s it. McNulty fired them.
Alfred Kelgarries @ 363
McClatchy, HQ’d here in Sacto, has bought so many papers and groups in the last 3-5 years.
They’ve sold off some really bad performers, streamlined the papers and cut back on news and added ad space.
But, they are still at the stage in their acquisitions where I think they WILL pursue news, look for big stories, anything that will help sell papers.
McClatchy is a GREAT call. Good work AK!
