Soul is a constant. It's cultural. It's always going to be there, in different flavors and degrees. — Aretha Franklin.

I grew up with the quote above on a plaque on a little stand in the bathroom.  The word "SOUL" was big and orange, outlined in blue.  (It was the 70's after all.)

That was all my mom, an opera singer who loved soul, jazz, blues, and R&B.  She was the proverbial firebrand liberal, an agitator and instigator in our claustrophobic little Georgia town.  There was a time when the Nice White Christian Ladies in our neighborhood sat down with my mother to have a "little talk" about how people were unnerved and freaked out about how many of our family friends were black people and how often we had them over.

My mom raised her two red-nailed middle fingers and told those women exactly where they could stick it.

And that weekend, she had the biggest, loudest, funkiest party that Columbus, Georgia had probably ever seen on "our" side of the tracks.

That was the night I met Gladys Knight.  I was five years old.  She was playing in town that weekend and just had to stop by my mom's big "Fuck You!" party with a bottle of wine.  My dad came and got my brother and I out of bed so we could meet Gladys.  I remember standing there in my pajamas, feeling terribly shy as I shook hands with this tiny, tiny lady in an African dress and a really tall afro.

So, this is my big thank you to my mom on Mothers' Day.  She taught me so much, not the least of which was to fight for what I believe in and not take anybody's bullshit lying down.  Yay, Mom!

She also taught me to be good to the people I love, to keep my head when everyone around me is losing theirs, and how to really observe people and know the difference between what they say and what they really think.  This is a skill that has saved my neck more times than I care to recall.

So, thanks, Mom.  I love you.

Happy Mothers' Day.
