Soul is a constant. It's cultural. It's always going to be there, in different flavors and degrees. — Aretha Franklin.
I grew up with the quote above on a plaque on a little stand in the bathroom. The word "SOUL" was big and orange, outlined in blue. (It was the 70's after all.)
That was all my mom, an opera singer who loved soul, jazz, blues, and R&B. She was the proverbial firebrand liberal, an agitator and instigator in our claustrophobic little Georgia town. There was a time when the Nice White Christian Ladies in our neighborhood sat down with my mother to have a "little talk" about how people were unnerved and freaked out about how many of our family friends were black people and how often we had them over.
My mom raised her two red-nailed middle fingers and told those women exactly where they could stick it.
And that weekend, she had the biggest, loudest, funkiest party that Columbus, Georgia had probably ever seen on "our" side of the tracks.
That was the night I met Gladys Knight. I was five years old. She was playing in town that weekend and just had to stop by my mom's big "Fuck You!" party with a bottle of wine. My dad came and got my brother and I out of bed so we could meet Gladys. I remember standing there in my pajamas, feeling terribly shy as I shook hands with this tiny, tiny lady in an African dress and a really tall afro.
So, this is my big thank you to my mom on Mothers' Day. She taught me so much, not the least of which was to fight for what I believe in and not take anybody's bullshit lying down. Yay, Mom!
She also taught me to be good to the people I love, to keep my head when everyone around me is losing theirs, and how to really observe people and know the difference between what they say and what they really think. This is a skill that has saved my neck more times than I care to recall.
So, thanks, Mom. I love you.
Happy Mothers' Day.

Hi TRex!
lolo, you are simply uncanny.
Now run and tell the others we’re here.
Mama TRex rocks. Thanks for sharing this wonderful memory with us.
Okay, gang. Time to hit the sack. Jane has to be at the hospital bright and early in the morning for some tests. Mustn’t muck things up by being a slow-moving, sleepy Theropod tomorrow.
Good night!
TRex!
and TRex’s mom!
…and is anyone else having trouble reaching phone numbers near Pasadena, CA today? I can’t get my Mom :{
Sleep well, TRex.
Asking Hygeia and Brigid that Jane’s test results all be negative.
(In the good medical sense, natch)
Good nite, T Rex. You are the ‘POD!
Speaking of people who have lost their heads, Pope Benny is spouting nonsense again.
http://www.nytimes.com/2007/05…..pe.html?hp
Dang. I want so much to be a good Catholic, and the turkeys who run the institution make it so stinkin’ hard.
What a wonderful story TRex!
Sleep well, TRex.
TRex @ 5
Sleep well and best to Jane.
There are some who would tell you that “good Catholic” is an oxymoron.
Me, I prefer to reserve the term “oxymoron” for Rush “Hellmouth” Limbaugh.
Okay, really, good night!
You definitely have a special mom, TRex. Night and sweet dreams of your wonderful family.
Mama TRex’ recipe for Mac and Cheese. Almost better than sex.
Suzanne @ 14
Just saved it. Will print tomorrow. :) Looks great.
OT, but in an attempt to be an honest analyst and as a fan of the Daily Show, i just tried to watch FOX’s rip-off, the 1/2 hour News Hour. I believe, rather than watch unfunny tripe of that sort again, I would prefer a tooth or two yanked out, informally. I have not the adjectives in my vocabulary to properly describe smarmy, cutesy, schlock of that sort, and even if I did, I would prefer to not wade in the thought-pool required. I should have known better-how T-Rex can watch the amount of Malkin he does, I cannot imagine.
kirk murphy @ 6
That is so sad. Why can’t you get through?
RonD @ 16
As I said in the previous thread, the Thunder Lizard is absolutely impervious to pain. I do not know how he and others manage to wade through the dreck that permeates wingnut discourse.
Tastes even better than it looks, TB. Makes my eyes flutter just thinking about how it melts in the mouth with just the right amount of crunch.
RonD @ 16
Ron I heard part of it earlier tonight, OMG it sucks.
Suzanne @ 19
OK, now you are making me hungry and I need to lose at least twenty pounds. It is not fair . :(
Doc, I just couldn’t believe it could be that BAD. I expected it to be rude, dishonest, and offensive-and it could be all three and still be funny. Instead it was all three, plus just plain stupid and unfunny-the cardinal sin of a comedy show. Jokes at about the level of “Laugh-In”-minus the innocence.
TB is your pain any better tonight?
Sorry, Dr. (pause) Dick, MaryAnn made me do it *g*
Hot diggity: new Richard Thompson CD coming out two weeks from Tuesday. Happy happy joy joy.
lolo @ 23
Much better than during the day yesterday. Hoping the injections tomorrow help further.
Suzanne @ 19
Good thing I have none of the right cheese at home, and that I already brushed my teeth.
RonD @ 22
Well, that pretty well corresponds to what I have seen of the Rightard mentality. I have made a few efforts at reading some of the stuff in the right blogosphere or watching Faux News, but quickly become torn between throwing up or throwing something at the screen.
Suzanne @ 14
Oh Suzanne! Thanks so much for the link to that recipe. There was a huge amount of discussion, back and forth, especially between TRex and twin Patrick, before TRex finally got permission to post it. And then, I lost the link! And, I didn’t know how to find it again! One of those memorable FDL episodes. Thank you Thank you!
TexBetsy @ 26
I hope it helps and you get some relief.
VG, I bookmarked that one as soon as he shared it. I don’t care how many grams of carbs nor fats. That is comfort food.
Suzanne @ 31
Yeah. Despite my protests, I saved it for a “rainy day”.
DrDick @ 32
I copied it into WORD and saved it on the hard drive.
TexBetsy @ 33
Ditto.
So, when I stepped out to the local CVS to buy some aspirin and Alka-Selzer, late late night hadn’t come up. But, the comments I read when I got back (late nite thread, not late late night) were so great. Critical thinking, and all that. (same before I went out)
So, my CVS experience would have been deeply EPU’d had I posted a comment there. So, here, instead.
I happened to glance at the current issue of US News & World Report, on the way out the door. (current print, not latest blog time).
Cover had a photo of Bush. Caption/ sidebar was:
—Bush’s Last Stand
He’s plagued by a hostile CONGRESS, sinking POLLS, and an unending WAR. Yet he won’t budge.
IS HE RESOLUTE—OR DELUSIONAL?—
Almost laughed out loud. Wow! MSM is finally prodding people to do some critical thinking!
Any of you MAC folks have a good utility for optimizing? Also, how much memory is minimum for Tiger?
In Monday’s WaPo, Dan Eggen and Amy Goldstein belabor the obvious.
TRex @ 3
I didn’t see any new thread post, lolo!!! I’m telling ya, ESP!!! No one has a mortal chance!!! *g*
From burnspbesq’s WaPoo link:
my bold. We are up to 12 now?
RonD @ 22
It is against all the laws of the Universe for literalists to grasp parody, satire, nuance or the offbeat.
Their idea of humor (and problem solving for that matter) is strictly *first order*.
“Clever” = anything crass, pedantic, churlish, petulant and critical of the obvious.
Exaggeration (yawn) is (predictably) their go-to when pressed *g*
I occasionally check back just to make sure.
Yep, still chasin their tails.
NEXT
burnspbesq @ 37
Nice to see the WaHo actually grasping the obvious for a change. Their OpEd page seems mired in delusion.
CTuttle @ 38
I have said it before and I will say it again. lolo is the Internet Sprite. She actually lives in the net and is one with it. Sort of like Ghost in the Shell or The Matrix, only much nicer.
CT, Lolo did post a new thread notice downstairs. Right before I put one up. You not wearing your bi-focals again? (/snark)
Suzanne @ 43
That’s just harsh. Discrimination against us geezers it is.
CTuttle @ 38
Go back and check again I left it and even said shhhhhhh don’t tell Cassie.
(peering over the top of my own lenses as I type) downstairs, I totally misread a comment directed to Moderation with amen, amen as Moderator ahem ahem – my eyes must be getting older again – and that the term my eyeguy started using when I was only 40.
Suzanne @ 39
Yes but 2 were let go by Comey.
Well, there’s ESP, and then there’s RSS….
hi suzanne.
hey vg
Valley Girl @ 29
Oooh, I’m gonna try that one!!! It sounds simply delectable, I think the secrets are half the reason!!! I am a Master Chef, no bragging intended, but well versed in the culinary arts!!! A passion can not be quelled!!! My wife consistently blames me for her subsequent weight gain!!! I beg to differ!!! But I won’t quibble, I know which side my toast is buttered!!! *g*
Hey Jacqrat!
hey jacqrat, long time no see – where you been gallivanting?
DrDick @ 42
So sweet, Dr. Dick.
He calls himself “The Decider”, “The Commander”, “The Uniter”…
now he’s so board with his war in Iraq…that he decides to go all Nero on us and play “Maestro” while Baghdad burns and our soldiers are kidnapped.
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/200…..DF1pbMWM0F
He doesn’t go to funerals, or Veterans hospitals, and he can’t be bothered with interrupting his odd little fantasies.
Meanwhile he raged about the Brits who were captured by the Iranians…but that played into his sabre-rattling against Iran. This simply demonstrates that his “surge policy” is increasing both US and Iraqi civilian casualties rather than providing greater security. So he doesn’t let it interrupt his diversions.
ive been resting my back
And tonight’s Sopranos upset me. I came for company
TRex, you lucky therapod! Gladys Knight is my favorite female singer. Her voice just warms my heart. I hope someday I have a chance to tell her so.
And, might I just repeat this? Story above, but since it was such a long comment, people probably didn’t read… the boring details
Lucky TRex. My family is funk-deficient, but they’re sweet all the same.
Valley Girl @ 48
I don’t use a feed. I use ESP.
Could someone tell me whar ZED stands for…lolo are you out there???
Great catch, Valley Girl!
and….pasta water’s boiling….
lolo @ 53
Actually it goes back to what I was saying earlier. I had no idea of your gender until tonight and did not really care (except when I was trying to decide the proper pronoun). I had an image of you as a fey and delightful creature of the net, independent of any corporeal reality.
Suzanne @ 39
Yes’m, however, what seems to not appear on the radar is the death of the AUSA’s, IIRC; two in Wash. St and two in Dallas, plus the Dallas lead USA on Medicare Fraud!!! I know some FDL’ers can give me an Amen on this!!!
loosetooth (love that name) ZED comes from the zero that the software gives the first comment, instead of a one.
of course, that is from memory and mine has been known to be age-impaired.
loosetooth @ 60
I am here. It means zero.
loosetooth @ 60
Apparently, when Lolo gets to a new thread, she sees the number 0, zero, or zed. When anyone else gets to a new thread, they just see Lolo.
TexBetsy @ 66
She is one with the net. None may get the zed save by her mercy.
lolo @ 59
Thank you for calming my suspicious mind ;). Couldn’t help doing the “critical thinking” bit, after all the discussion about that on previous thread. Someone who previously got mucho Fitz’s (back then) confessed to RSS, so that is why I even thought of it. ESP! I’m convinced that mother’s have that too!
And now for something completely different:
Aretha Franklin
(I had to do some digging to find the history on this, it was apparently in 1998.
The Rest of the Story)
CTuttle @ 63
Amen and Kirk says one related to soldiers and PTSD,
TexBetsy @ 66
Ain’t that the Truth!!! LOL!!
lolo @ 70
Oooh, no linky???
TB #66,-what you said.
CTuttle @ 71
SnarKassandra seems to think Lolo is guided by the devil.
I had been at FDL for over 2 years before I actually saw a #0 comment! And, it wasn’t mine.
Hey Kirk! Were you referring to the Bush- is he resolute or delusional?
Valley Girl @ 68
I just get a feeling. I check if it’s there I snatch it, if not I wait and try again.
lolo, that’s how I knew you weren’t watching the Gonzales liveblogging last Thursday-cause I got the zed twice! Clearly, you were otherwise engaged.
Time for me to get some sleep. See all of you tomorrow. I’ll be on a lot daytime after I get back from the surgery center.
hurm.
awwwww, TRex you’re such a good dino boy. How could a mother not be proud to have raised such a toothy son with a heart of gold.
CTuttle @ 72
KIRK!!! YOU STILL HERE?
VG, iirc, it started to appear when the lake switched over to wordpress from the old blogger. The elusive zero that we all heard about but I did not believe it until I got my first.
TexBetsy @ 74
Gasp! Cassie wouldn’t think that, would she, supernatural yes, but, devilish, hmmm…!
fingers and toes crossed that all goes well for ya, TB.
TexBetsy @ 78
Night Betsy. Hope you sleep long and well.
Sleep well and sending you every good thoughts tomorrow dear Betsy.
RonD @ 77
My friends mom died and she wanted a haircut so I HAD to do it. I couldn’t say no I have to watch the hearing and snag the zed.
Good nite, TexBetsy! Best of all possibles.
~~~balloon deflating~~~…
My sympathies to your friend. I did wonder where you were.
Oh no she doesn’t think I am evil does she???
TexBetsy @ 78
God Bless, Ma’am!!! Praying for your well-being!!! Sleep well!!! (((TexBetsy, formerly TexasBetsy))) ;)!!!
just back from the outskirts of newspaperbrat’s territory – in this case, a small town north of Monterey where madame punaise (gotta find a better name than that) realized a long-time dream of skydiving…she was accompanied by punaise jr., and they both loved it. I watched from the ground!
lolo!
There def. is a pattern, or general drift to conversation in the threads. I have reason to know! So, apart from ESP, you might just be acutely tuned to how the conversation is going. Nice gift.
The previous person who used RSS was xy. Techie solution. You use ESP. Will I stir up controversy if I say, well, that figures?
VG, ygm
lolo @ 90
In the same way that her cousin is evil for finishing the cinnamon cereal or her brother is evil for not letting her have a MySpace.
lolo @ 90
I doubt anyone could believe you are evil. Uncanny, supernatural, and ethereal are another story.
RonD @ 89
I know I felt so bad for her.
what a mother’s day madame punaise had!
punaise @ 92
A wise man. I find the idea of voluntarily jumping out of a perfectly functioning aircraft incomprehensible.
Suzanne @ 98
she was beaming
punaise @ 92
Why would one want to depart a perfectly good aircraft in MidFlight???
punaise @ 92
Oh wow! I have thought about doing that! Congrats to both of them. And, why, might I ask, were you on the ground? To celebrate their return, I suspect, knowing you…
A day where a dream come true is one that is to be cherished for a long time.
What a wonderful gift that was to her.
maybe lolo should take the challenge and type in something more substantial like,” impeach george bush ” or perhaps a longer message.A true internet pixie should be able to do this and then end with a ZED.What do you say lolo???.
TexBetsy @ 95
OK, I feel better now. She was so angry. She called me a cheater so I called her a cry baby. *g*
DrDick #99, I agree with you-so you can imagine my horror last summer, when, while my son was home from school(FSU-PoliSci), a dear friend of mine talked him into skydiving with him.
Valley Girl @ 102
hah! I wasn’t terribly inclined to do it, and besides – someone had to assure that punaisette had a surviving parent! actually, having seen the thrill, I’m game to give it a try – someday.
by the way, these were tandem jumps, attached to an experienced skydiver. very low risk.
DrDick @ 96
Thanks Dr. Dick!
RonD @ 106
Alsa, corrupting the youth of America. You just never know who you can trust. ;-)
I’m toast. Good night, everyone. Pleasant dreams to all. When we wake tomorrow, we will be one day closer to January 20, 2009.
When Baby Girl was still in her residential program, I would go up to Placerville (4 and a half hours each way) for visits. Would drive by the Lodi Skydiving School which is located right next to the 99 freeway. I always worried about some poor skydiver with double irish luck landing on the freeway.
Of course, I am a worrier from a long line of worriers.
RonD @ 106
Uncle Sam told me I had better jump, didn’t appreciate it then, still not my cup of tea!!!
Jacqrat- got YM. Go DWT. Less traffic.
Good nite to you,Burnspbesq, and thank you for the ray of hope!
Hey, Punaise
punaise @ 100
And so are we oh so proud firepups – what an achievement and unforgettable Mother’s Day for one and all. Wow!
And what a perfect day weather wise = ya all come back down to our beautiful central coast sometime soon family punaise!
burnspbesq @ 110
Not soon enough, not soon… Nite!!!
Well, I think that I too will turn in. Must begin to plan my assault on the summer tomorrow. So many possibilities, so little time. The trout definitely need to get their affairs in order.
CTuttle @ 72
oops…I think there was a transmission glitch…
I know of two separate cases from USA Biskulpic with egregious and apparently false prosecutions (State employee immediately released by Federal Appellate panel and Vietnam Vet imprisoned for “Fraud” as a result of complaining to VA about their fraudulent deial of benefits).
In the vet’s case, the bogus complaint was plucked out of VA admin procedure before their completion and elevated into Federal criminal court – just as the VA Sec geared up to deny PTSD claims.
A commenter on an earlier thread told us about a Federal Court hearing (in Denver?) this week about FEC administrative investigations (commonly settled by civil fine) magically elevated into criminal status.
Where they just happened to require National Security Letters. Allowing for criminal FBI investigation in secrecy.
Whole lot of elevating goin’
downup….(Is that a fundie thing?)
But no deaths I’m aware of.
Hi VG!
That was a reference to the cover, but I liked the meaning you found :)
Words at the Lake…..
Jrt- check out DWT. I will not last much longer this eve…
DrDick, sleep thee well-always a sublime pleasure to avail myself of your wisdom and company.
DrDick @ 118
Fly Fishing is true fishing, Hip Waders on and Deft flicks of the wrist, Nirvana!!!
loosetooth @ 104
Sure, I did elaborate zeds in the beginning. Punaise named me lolopol☺☺zed. But some commenters got annoyed so I simplified.
Valley Girl @ 120
I am there but do not see you
Sleep well, Dr. Dick.
Off to spoon out the penne….
(and lolo I loved your elaborate zeds – hope they return soon….and often)
Valley Girl @ 35
No, I don’t think so. What you’re seeing on the cover is a “hook;” MSM knows that what they’ll do is look inside to find the “answer.” (Sigh.)
BTW, since we were talking so much on the previous thread about reading and writing skills, in my freshman English class, we were assigned to get a current copy of Time or Newsweek, and highlight all the adjectives. Then in class we deconstructed the sentences to show how the adjectives slanted the point of view. Do English teachers do that any more?
I am not an English teacher, so I don’t know.
However, way back when, in Sr. High, the only intro I had to critical thinking was some class or other where we had to compare articles on similar subjects from Time and Newsweek, to see how they were slanted differently.
Bob Schacht @ 130
I’m telling ya, Bob, we pale against the Zed Master, OT, I finally got your E-mail, I will participate in, any and all shenanigans, but FDL takes precedence!!! *g*
Any one still here?
Skippin all the comments tonite, as I enjoy hearing Retha.
I was one of about 4 white folks in 1972, at Stanford Auditorium, to see Retha backed by what was left of The Kingpins. I was 19 I think. I lit up a joint, got hit on for a toke, passed it along, and VIOLA, next thing I know, cat next to me lites up, hands it to me and smiles and says “I figger if a white boy can light up in this house, them I’m kewl, you’ll LIKE this weed.” And I DID! And he liked mine and Retha killed me, a thousand times, over and over, note for note spot on perfect, rocking and rolling with full choral backup, full horns, some strings.
Blew my ass away. Not the first time I’d seen that kinda stuff, only the only time I ever saw Retha. She killed me.
I saw in ‘73 or so, over two years at Oakland Coliseum, Bay Area All Stars Of Jazz, or something like that.
Nina Simone.
Airto, Flora, Chick, Al The Git Dimeola, forget the others.
Les McCann, Eddie Harris!! Huh, “Make It Real Compared To What!”
Rashann Roland Kirk (two saxes, no stinky little clarinet)
Basie Orchestra
Ella, Live. Oh my.
Freddie Hubbard.
Chuck M. Pop or not, you get Esther Satterfield out front of Land Of Make Believe with Chuck and his band it’s gonna KILL ya!!!
Many, many others. I got took to school these ways and it was cuz this person or that one said I gotta check it out.
All that time, and weekends in The City from ‘68 (underage) to ‘72 or more for Winterland, Fillmore West, Avalon Ballroom (Beau Brummerls!), Family Dog At Ocean Beach . . . more schoolin.
I was a Peninsula Boy, from ‘63 to ‘88.
High School grad ‘71, Aragon. San Mateo.
We lived on the east side of 101, looked down upon by some, but we didnt care. Retha was legend. So were all the true soul stars from late 50’s thru early 70’s.
The Hispanics, The Black’s, Us Honkies. We all danced, drank red wine, smoked pot and grooved to the soul sounds when we weren’t grooved, drunk or stoned to the Bay Area sounds of the times, the English Invasion, blues, jazz (Jazzbeau Al Collins, From The Grotto).
That was an incredible time of music, the early 60’s to the middle 70’s. Only musicians and students of music who knew music history, the classical history, the jazz history, the folk history . . . only them folks knew what led up to that glorioius period of music us boomers drank, smoked and grooved our way thru like we inheretid it, like we owned it, like it was ours. Hell, we were it’s, all along, and never knew.
Not until I heard Grisman and Tony Rice doing Django and Stephan.
I LEARNT about Django, Stephan, from The Dawg in ‘84 I think it was. I was doing half hour viginette’s for KCSM-TV as a student, covering The Arts, Bay Area Wise, from ‘80-’84, and learnt about Benny Goodman and this kat Charlie Christian . . . from a dance troupe in The City. Oberlin Dance Collective. Brenda Way and her band of merry leapers. They USED Benny’s Compilation to make dance and used his music as the soundtrack to their choreography. It was SO bitchen.
Dionne Warwick, Say A Little Prayer.
I always LOVED Dionne Warwick. Hated San Jose Song, HATED it.
So WTF am I trying to say here? Besides rambling like an old man thru wild nights of my youth . .
My mom was NOWHERE as kewl at TRex’s. My folks were ’square’ like Maynard G. Krebbs skecthed it out on Dobie G.
But, soul then, was a constant.
Now, it’s just there, not what I like cuz of drum machines.
But I walk into a bar here in Sacto sometimes, here n there, n there’s someone honoring the late and Great Johnny Heartsman, and there’s a Hammond B-3, couple of horns, a git doin the Stax Soul Sounds, a bass player who KNOWS it, and growly sanger tearing up some soul tune I actually know the words to and used to dance to.
And I hit a shot of Ole #7, hit the dance floor area, and shake my big old booty on The Good Foot. Cuz man, soul is the constant.
I play dobro, and a little mando, and I’m in love with acoustic, americana and bluegrass and newgrass.
But soul is constant. I bet MY mother, were she alive, would approve of that.
Somehow, her and her husband my father, who passed away in the last 5 years of my life, somehow I think, they woulda approved of my love of soul. They always wathched Ed Sullivan on Sunday Nights for the music (they liked the comedy too), and I swear, I saw them tap their toes back then to the likes of Marvin Gaye, Tammy Terill, and any other soul acts that were on.
They liked the Brit Invasion sounds, too, but I know, they LOVED the soulful ballads. Otherwise, they wouldn’t have let me outta the house pre 13 . . . to GO to places like GARAGE PARTIES!
Thanks Smokey, and all the rest I haven’t mentioned. You were a part of the soundtrack of my life growing up, but, you were also THE heart of my soul and dancing feets and the bridge tween our cultures, streets, blocks, communities, and freeways, east and West sides. Even the rich kids on the hill danced and got boogie’d to soul.
They always had more wine and weed than we did, too. They were welcome to ANY party we had . . :grin:
N thanks, Mom. I always knew you were kinda kewl, behind that Indiana Farmgirl Facade. I mean, that woman bore me, and my sister and brother. And she followed my pops to SE Asia, in ‘53. For 10 years, she gave up a white picket fence for Saigon, Vientienne, Bangkok.
Yeah, my mom had some fuckin soul, she did.
Anyone still here?
I’m still here, lolo.
Mom taught me to be smart and logical. But she also taught me to be spiritual and metaphysical. So now I try to be always on the lookout for ‘God winks’, little coincidences that point you in the right direction. As some here may know from a thread this morning, this is my first Mom’s day since she passed. Well, I wound up talking with two close friends of her’s today, from two totally different parts of the country, and they both told me I should look into “THE SECRET” book or DVD. So I found it complete on Google video (1h30m) and now I must pass it on. I’m touched by it already and I feel Ma’s spirit filling my heart.
We’ve all got these stories. We all have the history the stories COME from. Just let the memories flow, and the soul always reveals itself.
I miss my mom n pops. I’m phreakin 54. They died within the past 5 years, within two years of each other. I miss them, but, they did good, or I would’nt be WRITING this stuff.
Watch it with those hugs lolo. I KNOW you’re a girl and those ’spaghetti straps’ are what chased me outta here last thread. I needed some ‘alone time’. *wink ~ 707
lolo, we didn’t scare you off did we???
lolo @ 157
I’m still here, but just checking in now and then.
I gotta make my lunch for tomorrow.
I thought you were freed from the rigors of academia? ;)
Hi all, Back from reading downstairs and elsewhere. Glad you’re here LC. Thanks for the linky learning earlier. Can’t begin to tell y’all how much you and the lake mean to me. When I read I can hear your voices behind my tinnitus. Dang concerts never go away. Oh and Suzanne, Cassie told me to be careful with my new link talents around you. I’ll be careful.
Just goodnite and Happy Mothers Day again.
bluejeans, too many links in one comment will automatically land your comment in the spam filters. remember that preview is your friend when practicing links. you can preview and then click on the hyperlink in the preview to verify that you did it right.
on that note, i’ll bid you all g’nite for the evening.
Got up, made the rounds, honey tucked in, listened to that clip of Retha, and now . . . can’t sleep. Too much to say.
1) Retha, what a goddess of voice. What soul. Yadda yadda. Props. I SO forget to give her props anymore. Gladys, and all the others, too.
2) TRex, yer a hoss for reminding me about my lack of props.
3) TRex, incredible sharing of YOUR life, and YOUR mom, with us, so props to you for that too . . . . Bless yer mom for her heart and soul, and may we all take what we have and pay it forward every day.
4) IGBOBLAB. (I’m Gonna Bust Out Bawlin Like A Baby)
I just keep listening to that clip, and readin your post, T-over and over, and thinkin and thanking my moms n pops . . . thanks, hoss. Lesson well learnt and taken. Good whack up the head. :smile:
Now, to a new morrow, with heart, BODY and soul.
N THERE’S a phreakin classic song bluegrassed since the 50’s.
Body And Soul.
Wonder how many of you URBAN folks ever knew that old jazz standard was grassed up by MANY of the originals including Mr. MUNroe. ;-)
I’m back. Marcy has a new thread up and I went over there to read it.
I’m back, I tell ya, Waxman will be the one to produce the veritable ‘Smoking Gun’! His sheer doggedness and tenacity is already producing results!!! Shrub may be able to run, but he can’t hide!!! The noose is tightening!!!
CTuttle @ 177
I hope so. Ew sounds disgusted with the whole thing.
lolo @ 178
That would be an understatement, my dear!!!
CTuttle @ 167
Oh, no! I’m about 3 years away from retirement.
Hey, I’ve heard Mr. MUNroe’s version, but I prefer the Seldom Scene’s old version of it, with John Duffy signing lead. They do it up proud.
Bob, I had meant for the summer!!! Not en toto!!! You’re a Manoa Faculty member aren’t ya???
Hey, before I go over to see Marcy’s post and hit the sack, I’ve gotta turn y’all onto “News Trust” and its survey of almost 300 news sources, which includes FireDogLake! FDL rates only a 3.0, which is about a “C” in their system. No “A’s”, but there are a number of “B’s” that you might find interesting:
Common Dreams (4.0)
CSPAN (4.0)
Free Inquiry (4.0)
Greg Palast (4.0)
National Geographic (4.0)
National Public Radio (4.0)
Union of Concerned Scientists (4.0)
Science (4.1)
Scientific American (4.1)
Its interesting to see Greg Palast up in this rarified atmosphere.
If its any consolation, FDL shares a 3.0 rating with MyDD and DailyKos. TruthOut and McClatchy get a 3.8
Well, sorta. I’m an Associate in the anthropology department, but my paying gig is with the Pacific Basin Rehab Research & Training Center. We’re on duty all year around, rather than the academic schedule.
I was just just reading Tom Tomorrow’s post, in which he cites Nir Rosen’s New Yorker piece! In it Nir says 4 Million Iraqis have fled Iraq, the US equivalent would be 45 Mil!!! But, that wasn’t what I was concerned about, how many Iraqis have been allowed to emigrate to the USA??? I’ll post a number after some guesses??? Anyone Game???
Bob Schacht @ 184
Rehab with Tripler or with Aiona’s initiatives? Or, Neither!!!
Bob Schacht @ 183
Faux News; 2.2: Meet The Press; 2.8, Bwhahahaha…. FDL Rocks!!!
CTuttle @ 186
Neither. We’ve got state funding to work with Hawaii Voc Rehab services, and some other grants, including Federal.
OK, now I’m off to bed.
Aloha Oe, Bob, I’ll see ya online….
CTuttle @ 185
Alack no takers, 7K, in total!!! Have we no shame??? Let me repeat; 7,000 Iraqis have been allowed into the US!!! So many individuals had put their lives on the line, and only a meager handful have been allowed into the US!!! Disgusting!!!
They were living over OUR oil. As soon as we take it, they can go back.
Where’s the problem?
/s
Well, I might as well talk to myself in the mirror, Ta Ta, Y’all!!!
kirk murphy @ 191
I like that; ‘Our Oil’!!! Shrub and Deadeye seem to think so!!! The monkeywrench in the process is the Iraqi Parliament’s vote to ask us to leave!!! Bwhahaha!!!
Thanks CTuttle :)
Hope you have a good night and a lovely tropical day…I have to totter off to bed here…
Sleep well…
Good morning, pups. It’s Kristof and Krugman in the NYT today:
Coffee and tea are ready, and this morning it’s a variety of bagels, with cream cheese or whatever you prefer. Have a grand Monday.
Mornin’ all!
Once again, I’m here too early, but maybe there’s one or two people going through the papers. The WaPo has this about the AG firings. Pretty disgusting stuff, though it looks like they saved the front page for a Federal Loans for Coal Plants piece, which, while disgusting, is probably not as illegal as trying to suppress voters, press false charges on Democrats or intimidate prosecutors into sitting on investigations of Republicans…
I’ve said it before…it’s a miracle that we won. Rove wasn’t lying when he said that he had ‘the math’
I heard again this am that if the Dems don’t win in’08 they should get out of politics. Always make us look like we shoot ourselves in the foot. The reality is that they’ve destroyed the electoral process along with everything else.
Now, back to our regularly scheduled takedown of the Bush crime family.
Any word on when Goodling will testify?
That’s funny! Every time my 4 year old grandson wants me to leave him alone and get out of his business, he suggests I go get on the computer and get rid of george bush.
New thread…
Scarecrow talking about the generals upstairs
Morning, pups. Fresh brewed thread above.
My mom made me listen to soul music when we lived in Motown and I remember eating wheat bread with the Supremes on it.
I memorized Kipling’s “IF” for my mother when I was a lad and it has stood me in good stead, low these many years, too.
That we should all endeavor to, “Keep our heads when all about us are loosing there’s and blaming it on us [paraphrase],” will continue to be good advice in the coming years, I’m sure.
And Moms, everywhere, will be proud of us for doing so.
I Love Ya TRex! Sorry, I came to this thread so late…
TREX!! Your mom sounds SO COOL!! And meeting Gladys Knight – OMG, I am SOOOO jealous!!
I’ve been able to get my 15 yr old and his friends to listen to SOME of my “oldies music” (which to them means anything, especially metal, from the 70’s or 80’s)
I can NOT, however, get them interested in anything Motown. They absolutely CRINGE when Gladys or Aretha or Marvin come on, because they know there is only ONE WAY I can listen to those tunes – with the sound cranked up and singing at the top of my lungs!
(And for full embarrassment impact, if I’m stopped at a redlight, I do the choreography – “leavin on a midnight train – WHOO WHOO!”)
Hope all the moms out there had a wonderful Mother’s Day. I got to plant flowers and drink champagne and eat strawberries and cantaloupe – it was a very good day!
