The 05/14/07 print copy of The Nation has on the back page an ad by an anti-immigration group calling itself "The Coalition for the Future American Worker" (CFAW). The spokesperson in the ad, T. Willard Fair (who until recently worked for Jeb Bush and now works for Charlie Crist as the Florida State Board of Education chair, where he is a strong proponent of charter schools) , claims to be a noted civil rights leader and says that we must fight illegal immigration. (This is all hard on the heels of The Nation's running lots of letters by people who purport to be very liberal yet want to string up illegal immigrants.)
This set off all sorts of alarm bells in my head, so I decided to do some Googling. Follow me past the jump to see what I found.
Here is the Wikipedia entry for CFAW: "The Coalition for the Future American Worker is an umbrella coalition of organizations in America seeking to convince President Bush to change his immigration policy. It includes professional trade groups and grassroots citizens organizations, and has run advertisements in several states, including Pennsylvania. Their spokesman is Roy Beck."
Hmmmm. Roy Beck. Why does his name sound familiar?
Here's the Wikipedia entry for Roy Beck:
The Camp of the Saints puts the white man's dilemma in the most difficult terms: slaughter hundreds of thousands of women and children or face oblivion. Of course, a nation that had the confidence to shed blood in the name of its own survival would never be put to such a test; no mob of beggars would threaten it.[1]
Dark-skinned immigrants loitering on street corners. A dark-skinned immigrant running from a pursuing police car. Those are just two of the racially charged images flashing across TV screens this election season in a big-money campaign by anti-immigration groups.
The objective: steer voters away from Republicans and Democrats who support guest-worker programs and other immigration reforms, including those proposed by President George W. Bush.
One of the prime targets, Rep. Martin Frost (D-Texas), condemned the ads as racist; his Republican challenger, Pete Sessions, found them so repugnant he joined Frost in calling for them to be yanked off the air in their district. That opinion has been seconded by the campaign's two most powerful targets, Republican Sen. Chuck Hagel of Nebraska and Senate Minority Leader Tom Daschle (D-S.D.).
The ads were placed on the air by the Coalition for the Future of the American Worker, a front group for radical anti-immigration groups including the nation's largest and wealthiest, the Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR).
(These groups' ties run deep. The head of FAIR, Dan Stein, is president of the Coalition. The Coalition's spokesperson is Roy Beck, head of another anti-immigration group created by the founder of FAIR.)
Oh, yes: The Nation isn't the only mag to be running ads from Roy Beck's CFAW. The New Republic has been, too. I strongly suspect that this is all being done because some immigration-reform legislation is coming up before Congress soon, and the racist anti-immigration folks want to play off blacks against Hispanics in the hopes of weakening our side. [UPDATE: And they're doing so using bogus 'statistics' that have been repeatedly refuted.]
Now, The Nation has a long tradition of running ads from anyone who wishes to pay for them, in keeping with their philosophy of encouraging dialogue. That's well and good — in fact, most reputable news and opinion sources (including this one) have similar policies. But even as we let them advertise on our sites, we have a right to point out things about these groups that they don't want you to know.

Good Morning Pups and Happy Mothers Day!
Hi Phoenix Woman!
I am not awake enough for this. back in a bit to really read it and comment.
Absolutely. I like to think that Atrios gives Glenn Beck extra shit just because MSNBC advertises his show on Eschaton.
Morning Phoenix Woman and pups: Happy Mothers Day to all, and just ignore me now as I’m attempting my first ever Rudy Link. Thanks in advance Lou Costello.
Phoenix Woman, great catch on some true nasties…
Happy Mothers’ Day!
Jane Hamsher @ 5
Sorry to nit pick, but Beck’s show is on CNN Headline News not MSNBC. MSNBC gets to give us Tweety and *ucker and Joe Scar, so not much better but…
Jane Hamsher @ 5
You got it. We’re not letting them confuse buying ads with indentured servitude.

I noticed a alternative, (assuming the URL is not excessively lengthy). Just list the URL itself like so http://www.talkingpointsmemo.com/ and it becomes a link magically!.
Frank33 @ 10
But don’t try that at Late Night or Suzanne will put her hands on her hips and glare at you!
Frank33 @ 10
Was aiming for the Ghouliani story a bit down the page. Thanks Frank33, I’ll try again later.
In re: Roy Beck and CFAW: It is really the standard reich wing use of code words to disguise the true meaning. One truly does need a new-speak dicitonary in order to fully decipher the gibberish they print and/or say. I find it rather disgusting as the English language can be a truly magnificent tool for conveying information when properly used.
Blame the imigrants for stealing your job. GOP code words for Dark People but how PW could you forget to mention Lou Dobbs I mean he OWNS this issue. If anything T Willard Flair the Jeb bush connected spokesman is just stealing Lou’s issue because the Bush economy sucks for nonmillionaires and the Bushies need to blame someone. I wonder how many other Bushies are joining racist groups to help mobilse them politicaly.
Don’t EVEN get me started on False-Flag Ops. We just watched a FAILED one on international TV. British soldiers captured.
Remember how all the ‘nuke-Iran’ chickenhawk neo-cons couldn’t believe they didn’t fight back? A little wrinkle in their plan.
Conservatives’ insistance that immigrants not be ‘rewarded for breaking the law’ is infuriating. When their (white) ancestors entered this country, they faced for the most part only the inconveniences of Ellis Island. Most of the people who cut their lawns and care for their children have effectively no way to enter this country to work ‘legally’, but would face waiting lists decades long.
Happy Mother’s Day to all the fabulous FDL moms (and lurking moms).
I’ve talked to both Republicans and Democrats about the ‘immigrants’. And in reality those who aren’t part of the ‘base’ would agree that the problem with the immigrants isn’t the immigrants, it’s the CEO’s who want to short change their employees and pay slave wages.
We need to hammer it home. It’s not the immigrants, it’s the rich Dinos who just want to be richer off anyone’s back.
Back before the 2006 elections, it was written that Rove’s future tactic to continue his Republican government forever dream, was to use immigration. We can see it happening right now. Divide and conquer. He’s not going away, and we have to keep a constant light on it, so people don’t fall for his manipulation. It is already happening, they will use “immigration” the same way they used “9/11″ to create fear and anger in order to control the masses.
Univision has started a massive campaign nationwide to get immigrants eligible for citizenship to apply. Their aim is to get them eligible to vote in 2008.
I can’t wait to see how Lou Dobbs reports this.
I’m sure he’ll have a cow.
By the way: Did the lilac pic show up for everyone? And the false-flag image in this thread? They both do for me, even in Internet Explorer.
The guano pic in the Talking Heads thread still isn’t showing up as anything other than a bar in IE, and I’ve tried uploading a different version of it. I don’t know what to do, other than to tell folks to use Firefox instead.
bluejeansntshirt @ 6
This is starting to be picked up by the local papers in other parts of Iowa. I read a story on pg 5A of Burlington’s Sunday paper. Olin is about 3 hours away.
OFF topic and I’m sorry. I’m not sure how else to involve people here at FDL. But a friend of mine was sitting at a coffee place for mother’s day in DC when loe and behold, Jim McGovern saw her (it was the color pink that drew his attention).
At any rate, this is the important ‘intell’ she relayed to me.
Her news via Rep. McGovern was that Russ Feingold called him personally to thank him for his efforts that placed the bill to end the Iraq Occupation in the House last week. This bill did so much better than anyone expected with 171 votes in favor of Peace. Furthermore, Russ Feingold told him that it helped the cause quite a bit! But he also told Rep. McGovern that “Carl Levin is close to folding” on ending the occupation.
My friend and I think that Carl Levin needs our input before he makes the wrong decision to stick with Bush and the wrong policies in Iraq. So we need to make lots of calls and send thousands of faxes to Levin’s office. Heck… if you want to camp out on his doorstep and really bring it home to him, or camp out in front of the media, then do this too. We can not allow Levin to fold!
According to McGovern, “The tide is turning.”
Let’s make sure that we are pushing the tide the direction we want it to continue to go.

I’m a longtime fan of The Nation. The rag started off before the US Civil War as an abolitionist magazine. Over the next 165 years, the magazine has veered between left and far left. One of J Edgar Hoover’s first acts when he took over the brand new FBI was to make the US Postal Service stop mailing the magazine.
The Nation is better on some subjects than on immigration and race relations. It is one of the few magazines, though, to ask sensitive questions on how Americans perceive differences in racial stereotypes between Jews and Arabs, and what that might mean.
I’m pretty sure somebody at The Nation was already writing something about the racist ad on their back cover before we spurred them on with some help. Thanks, Phoenix Woman.
Things Come Undone @ 14
The deal is that Lou Dobbs is pretty upfront about being a conservative. The false-flag ops I’m talking about are those that push racism and other nasties under the pretense of being “progressive”.

I’m so bummed I missed that pic of the hot mitt *g*
Interesting post PW. Doncha just love it when the google produces such juicy tidbits. They can run but they cannot hide. Nice catch. What’s with wolf in sheeps clothing crap. Are they trying to trick dems into voting for another 10 inch bill that no one reads before passage?
SnarKassandra @ 4
Ditto. I’d like to come back and study this later but it’s past my bedtime, (recovering from minor surgery).
This looks like the kind of post that causes me to dent my credit card on this site.
The United States bears a huge responsibility for the so called immigration problem. Through our greedy efforts and our support for corrupt regimes in other countries we help make life miserable for most people living (if you can call it that) in awful conditions. “Anti-immigration” some say is just another name for bigotry and race hatred. I’d like to see these anti-immigration hotheads spend just one week employed in the service industry here. And perhaps just one day in the sweatshops of say Central America. And can someone point out just how NAFTA, CAFTA and the Third Way has lifted people in third world countries and banana republics, out of those grinding and squalid conditions and the never ending poverty? I’d be immigrating too.
Do the Republicans allow us to place ads on their Media and Blogs that go against their postions? The Nation just got used every GOP talking head is now going to go on TV and quote this ADVERTISEMENT as a recent ARTICLE in the Nation if they are really serious they will do it in Spanish Language Media they are trying to divide the left from the immigrant/ Hispanic comunity before the election.

Industries that depend on undocumented workers (e.g., Central Valley vegetable growers) do not want them to go home but also do not want them to acquire any rights, since that would make them much more resistant to exploitation (and more expensive). So there are families who have been in this country long enough to have children who speak unaccented English and have effectively become Americans, but live under the constant threat of deportation.
If you don’t have a mom to buy a gift for, you can make a donation and help someone else’s mom.
I have to wonder how many of these immigration baiters had parents, grandparents, or great-grandparents who emigrated from another country to America.

Oh, exactly. This isn’t meant to pick on The Nation for running the ad — as Jane notes, Glenn Beck advertises on Eschaton, which doesn’t stop Atrios from beating up on Beck every chance he gets.
But I have noticed recently that whenever The Nation does any sort of immigration-related pieces, they’ve been getting slammed with floods of letters from people who are either agents provocateur or who genuinely buy into the “we must stop the evil brown horde” rhetoric.
The right wing wants to use immigration as a wedge against us, by playing to fear and racism. We have to be vigilant against these efforts and use facts to debunk them again and again.
While I agree with your outrage at conservative hypocrisy, Ellis Island was no prize. One of my mother’s aunts almost died from a disease she caught from the unsanitary conditions on Ellis Island, and those who were sick or without means were often sent back.
Oklahoma kiddo @ 37
We know that our great grandparents bought their papers and didn’t get them the legal way.
More Republican scumbags. They must sit around constantly thinking up new ways to be scumbags. Or is that what thinktanks are for?

OMG: my wife has been pointing out for months that the original LA immigrant marches were organized and put on by these websites that had done all this stuff for Republicans.
She was like, what the hell? Obviously, the Repubs are stirring up the Hispanics so that, what? to stir up a backlash against them?
Elliott @ 34

The thing I’d like to know is why don’t they bust the employers instead of the immigrants?

They’re Republicans.
False-Flag Ops are when state sponsored or free lance terrorists stage an attack that looks like the work of their enemies.
If the USA or Britain or Israel or Al Qaeda wanted to provoke an attack on Iran, they would stage a terrorist attack that looked like the work of Iranian agents.
Operation Northwoods is a good example –

ReDubyacan hypocrisy. The employers have money, the inmmigrants do not. Kinda like how it’s usually the pr*st*tute who gets popped and not the John.
cbl @ 31
In 1994, then governor of CA Pete Wilson supported Prop 187, a measure that would deny health care and other social services to undocumented workers–even if they paid for it themselves. He probably thought that he could get away with this, since undocumented workers can’t vote. But it turns out that thousands of Hispanics were actually eligible for citizenship, and they rose up in fury: on one day, the oath of citizenship was administered to 11,000 people in a San Jose arena. Voter registration tables were positioned outside, and that was the end of Pete Wilson’s political career.

I know, and I didn’t mean to belittle those who entered the country that way. The conditions were atrocious, and I believe suffered only by those with few economic resources. But once they were through, at least their right to stay in the US wasn’t challenged.
kirk murphy @ 67
Didn’t the major food packers let workers off for those rallies?

For a smart a** answer, back in the day, a lot of us earned our very first working dollar by doing farm labor. I spent many a summer day puttin’ up hay or weedin’ tobacco or workin’ in the garden. In HS, a lot of kids got out of school to put up the tobacco (in Kentucky we didn’t have large volume food crops).

no, even they were immigrants. the only people in the world not immigrants are those few who remained in the Olduvai area, or if you want to assume they croaked in the last ice age, those who stayed close to where they managed to survive it.
To misquote The Chronicles Of Riddick, “We All Came From Somewhere Else!”
With regard to accepting advertising: if a website or publication filters the advertising they accept for political alignment or acceptability, all ads are presumed acceptable to the proprietor(ess). A filter means the owner agrees with the accepted ads. No filter means the owner has no opinion, neither endorsing nor condemning any ads on his/her real estate.
Thus, taking everybody’s money is the best policy, with caveats for abuse and obscenity. If you’re not subjecting your advertisers to a filter, you’re not approving or endorsing any product or service; you’re just cashing checks.
PS Thanks Mom for teaching me to read! And thanks to her Mom for requiring that I write a letter to her every week, and for returning it to me with corrections when needed.

So they can be locked up in all those groovy prisons that Blackwater has been building. More PROFITEERING.
Phoenix Woman @ 40
I’ve noticed the same thing, but my take is that it goes deeper than that. Probably because of the articles I tend to read there. Philip Weiss and Naomi Klein both attracted this sort of attention after articles which concentrated on the underpinnings of racial unrest. Klein drew LTEs for her work on the economic reasons for migration (our situation); Weiss for articles on the migrations of dispossessed people (the Palestinian and Iraqi refugee situations).
The far right – not just in the US, but globally – does not want racial animosity and global emigration patterns looked at from economic perspectives. Whenever possible, one racial group has to be pitted against another, or non-racial conflicts, like those between Israelis and Palestinians need to be mythologized into conflicts the public perceives to be racial.
kirk and I are awaiting whamo’s wife’s links.
sofistic @ 56
Exactly.
Sigh. I know the threads are moving on, but this one came home to me all the way to the bone, so I am decloaking to add a comment. First, Happy Mother’s Day to Everyone. This is a day to nurture your inner mother as well as honor your mother.
But, I have had happier days. I have spent the past few days doing some genealogy research – many relatives from Kentucky and Tennessee. Sadly, through family stories, I’m learning there is more than one KKK member attached to my tree and not so distantly either. I agree with many of the posters here – the roots of bigotry lie in fear and greed. It is to the advantage of those in power to foment hatred and false fears among “the masses”, to keep people divided and attacking each other, especially those who are different in some clearly definable way. (Remember the Kris Christophren song “Jesus Was a Capricorn”? – I’ll post a link if I can find one). “Everybody’s got to have somebody to look down on….”
I am beyond appalled and saddened at (what seems to me to be)the willful ignorance, meanness and hatred of people of color that has rotted many of the branches of my family tree. I don’t know if it is possible to pry open a closed, bigotted mind, but racist campaigns and ads certainly feed the fear and hatred, and feed the selective attention process of those eaten up with bigotry. Is it possible to innoculate people against bigotry? The problem of bigotry is both extremely personal and completely communal. We human beings have a long way to go. Corporations and dirty politics are part of the problem; families like mine are part of the problem. Where and how does it end? Thank you Phoenix Woman for exposing these people. Exposure is a good place to start.

Anti-union organizers used to claim it was pointless to pay workers more money, they would just waste it on drink, gambling, and visiting dens of ill repute. After the unions happened anyway, the workers spent the money on houses and college educations for their kids. the economy grew enormously.
one of the major areas where employers tend to go with illegals is workmen’s compensation insurance. this cost is often astounding, and if an honest businessman who pays it has to compete against a crooked one who has one or two “Show” employees for whom he pays it but in reality does most of his work with uninsured illegals, the honest guy will never survive because he can’t possibly match the crook’s prices. Then when a worker gets injured, the crook has them carted back to mexico as “charity” but in reality to avoid having their scheme blown. All the other illegal employers are following similar logic.
The only way I can see to level the playing field is to a) have all insurance paid via the gov and withheld automatically from the individual or business tax accounts and b) get rid of cash, have everything done via cards and computers. the EU is seriously working on this; they say the VAT recovered in two years from getting at the Underground Economy would pay for the setup.
But agreed, we HAVE to do something…
TeddySanFran @ 78
I just wish I could count on a SINGLE TV news host to point that out when a Republican starts quoting that ad in the Nation and misrepresentes it as an article in the Nation. Yesterday, I posted this but did not get an answer. Hopefully today it will catch someone’s attention.

A Mexican I know came here because his family was squeezed out of a lucrative rock mason business by Fox in the 90’s. Obrador was defeated by the same shenanigans that got Bush 2 terms here. CIA backed elections . Obrador wanted good jobs, wages and benefits. He won fairly but could not take office like Gore and Kerry. Mexicans want to stay home and work. Wouldn’t you? Anybody now who thinks good wages and benefits are part of our work ethic is branded a leftie and fought. Chavez is next after Iraq for wanting his people to have decent living conditions. Aristide was kidnapped by our CIA. Then the new medical schools were demolished …poor people were gunned down and the Red cross was not allowed to help. WE are like the Germans while Hitler was in power. That’s our legacy for future generations.

Welcome to the lake and thanks for de-lurking. Most everyone was a newcomer at some point, many of us have only been commenting here for two or three months ourselves.
I’m a native of Kentucky myself. My great-granddaddy fought in the war and spent 1 1/2 years in a Yankee prisoner of war camp. But we can’t be held accountable for the idiocies of our ancestors, I don’t think the biblical admonitions punishing even unto the fourth(?) generation is allowed anymore. As my father used to say, he didn’t give a damn if he had an ancestor hung as a horse thief, he just didn’t want any descendants hung as a horse thief.
And now that you’ve de-lurked, you’ll find it much harder t refrain from commenting going forward.

By the way, who know we did not have a war czar or a drug czar? It is like thay make it up as they go along?
Anyone think US Attorney Rachel Paulose will get fired? And is it legal to quote the bible in a government office building?
question for the group:
one of my posts suddenly says “awaiting moderation”. obviously i triggered a filter of some sort. It was probably a rather raw quotation of a recent indian chief at a hearing about indian casinos; is their a list of no-no’s not to put in posts I could read?
mod: not sure what triggered the filter but it was unclear that it was a quote and so did not get released – care to rephrase it?
Well done, PW.
Sandman @ 107
You are welcome; these may not be the specific ones you referred to, as I had not seen your ten-day limit when I posted them.
Paulose must certainly be having trouble operating her office, since all her direct reports took downgrades so they wouldn’t have to work directly for her. Main Justice sent her a minder/helper in April; I wonder if that person is still in place?

Spot on. “Illegal immigrants” from Mexico and Central America aren’t doing anything meaningfully different from what my ancestors did when they got on a coffin ship in Liverpool in 1848 to flee the famine in Ireland. They’re just trying to make a better life for themselves and a better future for their children and grandchildren. What’s so bloody wrong about that?
Ed*ard Teller @ 107
I hope so.
It all boils down to FEAR!

I dunno if this’ll be EPU..
But, I was reminded of that early AM so-called rant (so-called by you..I called it a ‘musing’ iirc) about the fulcrum of history …your mind was reflecting back 10k years and imagining the pivot point of people coming across the ‘land-bridge.
You did it about a year ago? Already that long…maybe.

Probably! Thanks, should have looked it up. :~)

I don’t think your wife has her facts straight. I don’t clearly remember who organized last year’s marches, but two men put a half million people in the street: the DJs “Piolin” and “El Cucuy.” The political power of Spanish-language radio remains largely untapped. Whoever figures it out first has a huge advantage going forward.

My Great times nine grandfather lied to get transport from Portsmouth, England to New Haven, CT. He said he was a Puritan, but was a Calvinist non-conformist. He successfully hid this awful fact until he could come out of the closet later in life. Maybe all his ancestors, including me, should be deported for falsifying his entry?
I liked this article in the Washington Post a week or so ago:
Skilled Masses
It’s my view that the American discussion on immigration seems to assume that all immigrants are low-skilled and only able to take low-pay, low-skill jobs. In fact there are many highly skilled immigrants out there and there is international competition for those in high-deman occupations.

I wouldn’t discount Whamo’s wife yet. I remember that initially there was a big drive to take to the streets by anti-immigrant hispanics. I can’t remember the lead guy’s name, but I remember something about that. He was in support of the Repubs, then when the people came out in the streets, there were more pro-comprehensive immigration people and they were at each other’s throats. I’m going to try to find out who the hell I’m referring to…:)

Thank you for the nice welcome from dakine01@100, kirkmurphy@101 and neokneme@104. Dakine01 your comments about antecedant and decedant horse thieves made me laugh. I needed that perspective after digging into the family dirt over the past few days. And neokneme, guess what? I don’t know about the Mullins Golden Delicious, but I did find some Mullins people connected to some of my family members way back. Hmmm. Ultimately, I’m sure we are all related through some ancient ancester from the African continent. And yes, we all came from somewhere. Thanks, folks, for the welcome. It is a little intimidating to comment here – there are so many really bright and witty people; and usually someone else has already made a comment that sums up my thoughts. Of course, it doesn’t account for the un/under-employed US citizens who work in IT who’ve had their jobs sent to Bangalore. But we mustn’t pay the higher wages that a US native would require when we can get the cheaper Indian workers and then claim there are no US workers available. Or how about the US worker given lay-off notices who has to train the replacements from Bangalore in order to receive a reasonable severance package.
I do not want to bash workers of any stripe but in the tech world, there are large pieces missing from the corporate meme, just as there is in the food industries and others. I do not believe that H1B workers are on a citizenship track. They are only taking jobs from US workers as they’ll accept lower wages and can be trained and then return with their job to their home country.

It’s sick how fast this immigration hatred has spread. It was on the fringes for awhile, but all of sudden it went viral. It got so popular.
Wow, I just watched a program about the Duggar family and a 7,000 square foot home they built. They have 16 children. They have been politically involved. Interesting background considering things of late:

Dakine01 –
Oviously you know the US situation better than I, but I can tell you that here in Canada there are jobs going vacant because there is nobody qualified to take them. And that rather than seeking out foreign-trained workers, employers are hesitant to hire them – thus effectively shooting themselves in the foot.

It’s not viral, it’s being pushed by every MSM outlet for one reason: get out the rethuglican votes! With all the scandals and iraq war going against the rethugs, their consultants expect a dismal turnout in 2008. The usual “G*y M*rr**g*” and “R*ght T* L*f*” ballot initiatives won’t work because they are either already on the books or have failed previously. The only other major wedge issue left for the rethugs is immigration, and only because it is thinly veiled r*c*sm. The rethugs know they won’t get any of the ordinary hispanic vote anyway, and well-off members of any ethnic group vote rethug (or so the rethug strategists assume) regardless.
And don’t be taken in by Lou Dobbs. He is following karlosovitch rovski’s script to the letter, so much so he’s less credible than Glen Beck. Check out his ridiculous rants on illegals and leprosy as an example.
The winds of 2008 are blowing already, firepups, and the smell on them is that of rethuglican wedgies. Time to get out the air filters…

This is a hard one. Several of my friends in IT are here on H1B visas, and they are fantastic people, the kind of people that anybody in their right mind would want to to add to the American melting pot. But I think it is true that the availability of such people from lower-wage countries have allowed some employers to offer lower salaries.

Hey! Thanks for this. I’ll go back & read thru in a moment.
I get ‘The Nation’ and I saw that ad. In fact, I was talking to someone about it because it bothered me and I was going to do some checking myself. Welll, I got sidetracked, but I am glad you did some work on it for me. :)
I am hoping the Repub. candidates get asked tough questions about the immigration issue in S. Carolina debate. Also questions -about Trent Lott/ Strom Thurmond love for days of segregation and fathering children outside of marriage with under with underage domestics -seem fair to me. Good ole time family values. They must think it is ok since Lott is back to pretty much where he was before. Also the Republican – No Child err Student Left Unarmed Campaign theme -warrants questions since the Repubs are very concerned about education. And Separation of Church and State – Should all DOJ be graduates of “religious schools?” And what about that Confederate Flag issue, Senator McCain? Not holding my breath for any tough questions, though.

Your story very much touched me. But I’d like to point out that it seems within your family the hatred and the bigotry disappated and left. Or at any rate, someone raised you well enough that you are not steeped in it. So there does seem to be hope.

I am very sorry to be on the “side” of hate-filled bigots, but I can’t support either immigration or a guest worker program. We the American people already use far more than our fair share of the world’s resources. There is a widening gap between the rich and the poor here as well as globally. In theory, I would like my USA to be more of a meting pot: to welcome anyone who loves the ideals of the Bill of Rights and wants to build a multicultural community where the best from a rainbow of traditions work together to achieve liberty and justice for all. But– NOT until there is some sort of rational plan for a sustainable economy that employs people at jobs that pay enough for a decent standard of living. NOT while we tolerate crumbling schools that push out a shameful % of students and nub the brains of countless graduates. NOT when we are at the mercy of a totally dysfunctional and insane health care system the cost of which per per citizen is half the earnings of a full time worker on minimum wage! NOT while we are fearful and at war. We are headed for a crisis as it is: one that may result in gated communities of the entitled and their servants and security guards with the desperate masses fighting each other for survival outside in slums of toxic waste. Until we hammer out a social contract that shames or taxes into diminishment the wasteful habits of our throw-away winner-take-all consumer culture and inculcates a sense of mutual respect and stewardship, we Must Not Grow! We must set our house in order, take care of all our children and the aging, before we invite others to join us.
I’ve been very surprised with the response I’ve heard from so called progressives regarding immigration. It appears that this is an issue that unites many Republicans and Democrats, some(Dems) of whom agree completely with Dobbs.
Yes indeed, but you should have pointed out as well that this has nothing to do with FAIR–Fairness and Accuracy in Reporting, which is a reputable media watchdog group.
Carry on…
I thought anytime one hears the word “false flag operation” the correct response is “conspiracy theory” and then censorship by the net nannies?
It’s as simple as “comment-allez-vous?”
“tres bien”
then
censor censor censor.
THE NATION has been running ads on Air America.
Last week, I heard one in which the guy representing THE NATION literally conducted a “swift boat” attack on John Edwards, repeating Republican talking points, until I wasn’t sure if I was tuned into Air America or Fox News or CNN radio.
Anyway, I’ve heard of Air America’s “open” policy in accepting ads from across the political spectrum, but to hear a spokesman for THE NATION slamming a Democratic Party presidential candidate over, of all things, his hair, made me wonder if THE NATION has been DLC’ed?
Has THE NATION, in an attempt to be as “fair and balanced” as, let’s say, Fox News, allowed Republican “moles” to infiltrate their staff, “moles,” like in the case of the DLC, whose purpose is to undercut and undermine the progressive, liberal Democratic Party by promoting a wingnut agenda from within?
Just curious.
Geralyn Horton @ 161
Geralyn, You state you cannot support immigration or a guest worker program, and are sorry to be on the ’side’ of bigots & state that we must put our house in order in order to survive. I hope I paraphrase you fairly. I’m not sure, though, that that is the question we face. In the top post, PW mentions a Nation article. I noticed and read a recent article about a raid on an industrial-size meatpacking plant in Greeley, CO in which agents swept a terrified workforce and bundled a sizable portion of it off to Mexico. Children were literally left stranded in daycare while this happened. The Feds promised followup on the social devastation, but did not deliver. Within weeks some of the same workers were trickling back. Why? The jobs were obviously not beeing scooped up by legals. The fact is that our workforce is largely immigrant and this has been a feature of it for some time. Are we going to accept the social consequences or are we going to just let a class of workers become the eternal scapegoats. The current immigration is the logical outcome of NAFTA. Fences and draconian enforcement will probably result in deeper divisions in the workforce and come no closer to a solution.
How about for a start, repeal NAFTA, repeal tax-breaks for US corporations fleeing overseas? Lets encourage protection, rather than the destruction of rural economies in Mexico and elsewhere by pro-globalization policies of our government. That should help to slow illegal immigration. Then how about universally available birth control here in the US. I would not say we should try to make this a top export, but please, let’s not continue to let the puritans from Reagan forward to continue to stigmatize and criminalize women and forbid them to control of their lives. I don’t think that we will ever come close to having a handle on immigration from the south until these two general questions are addressed. Should we enforce immigration laws? Yes, we must control our borders. But unless we take into account the social factors at play, I think we will either be simply bailing out a sinking boat or will be overtaken by a brutal regime of culling of our commnities by an ever expanding migra. I don’t think any progress can be made against the trends you mention while a purge of millions of our residents is going on.
Oregon is 98% lily white hipcoracy here. Demos and Neo cons sleep in the same bed. Loboyism is PAYOLA yo mama! In the name of Jesus as a cover for crimes against humanity. Mr jc_from OR… I am a duck and cheap labor in Oregon comes from Mexico.
I am so so sick of hypocricy. Let’s be fair to everyone. Let human kindness not faith based bigotry run our National Policy. Make the Drug czars pay for welfare for migrant laborers Make the farmers who use the labor build housing and health clinics for them. It is time for our latin allies tyo take responsibility for their own Corporate farmers should pay for welfare and we in our food stores will pick up the tab in higher cost for food.OK. Put the $30 Billion in food stamps back on the table (alcoholics and drug addicts) were not the group that was most hurt. It was American families 35% who cannot get food on the table for 3 squares a day. Hungery kids in America have to go to school to get fed! Halafuckinlueah. Yeah the Pastor of these large neocon churches get the pik of the congregation. Hers how it works find a babe and put here on a committee with access to the Pastor group. Then put any person of color in jail for life for a third drug bust. Justice for sale you got buck get good representation. Got political influece and walk.
